from a magic folding phone to a flying car some surprising announcements coming out of Berlin this week as the world's largest consumer electronic show kicks off all right Tech expert Mike Yanni traveled to Berlin to get a closer look at all the Innovation that is making headlines and he joins us this morning from epha in Berlin Mike good morning well good morning or maybe I should say good afternoon here in Berlin you know Eva is very similar to the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas there's about 2,000 companies here showing off the latest and greatest in technology and giving us a sneak peek at things that haven't even come out yet but this show is actually a little bit bigger than the Consumer Electronic Show that's for a main reason the public is actually invited in to see things firsthand you can actually buy a ticket and get in here and I got to tell you the energy level here is pretty amazing so Mike what's creating the biggest buzz on the show floor so far well you can't go anywhere on the show floor without seeing AI artificial intell it seems like it's baked into pretty much everything here and we've heard all the negativity around Ai and you know it's being used for scams and things like that but we're seeing some positive things on the show floor and ways it's going to improve our lives and make lives easier and actually a couple days ago Intel kicked things off when it announced a brand new processor it was nicknamed lunar Lake and now we know it's called The Core Ultra Series 2 and the cool thing is I mean we could talk tech specs and uh Jeff Carolyn I know you guys like get nerdy with me we could talk peacor we can talk ecores and hyperthreading but what was interesting is that it has AI built into the chip right into your computer so what does that mean okay so we took this for a test drive and tried out some things U let's say your child was going to school and they were writing a story and they needed an illustration next to it we used something called AI playground and we just typed in cat with a crown and within seconds a number of images popped up with you know a cat with a crown it was a lot of fun and the reason why it was so fast is cuz the AI is right on the computer it's not reaching out into the cloud to a third part service it was almost instantaneous and that also means it's more private that means when you're typing in those Search terms it's not going in the cloud where you know people are gathering that information it's stored right on your computer so that was kind of neat another thing it can be used we all take videos on our phones but what happens when you actually put those onto a laptop you get a bunch of file names that are a bunch of random numbers you actually have to watch those videos and rename everything well we were told that there were videos on a laptop that had people snorkeling so I thought okay what if I type in sea lion not only did it bring up a video of people snorkeling but it actually went to a spot where they encountered a sea line I had no idea the video was on the computer but the AI was able to track it down and find it for me so that that was fun and one more quick example for you we went to a press conference by a company called Asus and Asus is well known for their laptops in Canada so they were showing off their laptops with Intel's new core Ultra 2 Series chip and um they said that they're using AI for business so they have a program where actually if you were in a meeting uh maybe you weren't paying attention maybe you're kind of zoning out AI will actually transcribe the entire meeting for you it'll give you a summary that you can look at at the end and send to somebody who maybe missed the meeting it can also autot translate live in eight different languages which is pretty interesting and I was talking to some of my colleagues here on the show floor and some of the other analysts um and we all kind of agreed that 2024 we might look back on this year and say this is the year that Computing and a laptop changed because this is the year that AI was available to the masses now Mike you mentioned kind of the bad ways that AI is being used and we've certainly talked about that here on TMS is there any conversation on ways to combat that there at EA yeah you know we certainly have talked about deep fakes uh on the show before um and you know when you're using the likeness of somebody to promote something I think Taylor Swift has caught up with it with a fake contest online uh so interesting that you know antivirus scanning companies uh they are here and they're showing off new software using artificial intelligence where in real time if you're watching Youtube it can actually detect whether the audio has been altered through AI or even the video has been altered with the AI so I think that's going to be really useful and something we're going to see popping up uh later probably this year okay and where else are we seeing AI being used outside of laptops it's becoming a huge Trend in home appliances and I will say home appliances here at EPA one of the biggest draws everyone flocks to see the home appliances to see what's going to be showing up in the their laundry rooms and their kitchens we saw an oven that it has a camera inside and using AI it can identify what food you're putting in and then it'll know exactly how to cook it to Perfection and not only that we're seeing appliances here on the show floor that you can talk to them and I'm not telling I'm not saying give it commands you can talk to an everyday language it'll understand so you can talk to your washer and say hey I have a silk blouse and it has a ketchup stain on it and it's going to know through artificial intelligence exactly what cycle to put it through so that stains removed and my just before we let you go can you uh address what everybody is talking about which is the flying car have you seen it yet oh the flying car yeah you know what we had a map we have a map on our phone of this place and it took us well over an hour to actually track down this flying car and in the end the car they had here was half the size of what's actually going to go to market and it didn't move it didn't fly I've been going to Tech shows for over 15 years and I think flying cars have been announced at probably for the last 10 years and I have yet to see or be offered a ride in a flying car because they're always just sitting here behind tape they love to show videos of it in action but we don't actually see it here on the show floor so a little bit disappointment may maybe they have to team up with Intel for that brand new chip to get it off the ground I don't know all right Mike yti coming to us from Berlin this morning thanks Mike enjoy the rest of the show there Don this portion of the the morning show is brought to you by Intel aipc learn more at intel.com aipc
