all right here we go welcome back I'm just a guy on the couch rambling on about college football um today I'm going to be pretty specific on what I talk about I live in Michigan like I said before um I'm just a few miles away from Spartan Stadium um I want to discuss uh Michigan and Michigan State football um and I want to discuss where these programs are at the foundation that they're at um currently and for the future and I'm wondering if I'm overreacting acting or overthinking um making judgments on a very small uh sample size that we've got at this point under these new coaches but I I do think that there are some legitimate points in my thinking about where these two teams where these two programs it's more than just team I'm talking program which means current and future and where they're at you know as sports fans um we tend to react quickly at times especially in today's um Twitter and social media world with rapid people make comments right away sometimes it could even be the second quarter of a game and people are just frantically bailing and making judgments on a team that you know make it quickly but let's let's take a look at where these programs are at and I know that we're only two games into each um into the season for these teams brand new coaches but I think there's a lot to take in when you step back and really dive into and think and like I said maybe I'm overthinking it but as of today um you know we're early September I think that some of the stuff is legitimate you know last spring when Jonathan Smith was hired um came over from Oregon State and I still say that if Oregon State if the Pack 12 had not totally disbanded he would still be the coach at Oregon State but that's irrelevant that doesn't matter I don't know why I keep bringing it up but it's just my thought um but he's he's at coach at Michigan State so that um when he was hired I said if you're a Michigan State fan you have to be really excited for uh kind of a fresh start you know it's like a like a blank slate fresh start you kind of put things behind you you know [Music] when they had that really good season in 21 the Michigan State Spartans I'm saying um when they had a really good season in 21 mostly because of Kenneth Walker it was a pretty rushed um decision when they went all in on Mel Tucker it was a quick decision but but now after having some rough times and all the way that that fell apart now you have a blank slate and it's kind of exciting I said there's a lot of reasons for optimism and I would be really excited if I was a Michigan State fan and having a new coach and starting over and you know sometimes starting over is rough but if you as scary as starting over is staying complacent and being okay with mediocrity is even scarier if you think about it it's almost like you you kind of want to uh take that chance in a way for a fresh start so Jonathan Smith comes in and I know that people were feeling okay good it's kind of a fresh start but also kind of scared that okay starting over over and what's this roster going to look like and what's this team going to look like what's the program going to look like moving forward is the rebuilding process going to be long there's a lot of unknowns and even in today's world of college football where there's not very much patience anymore I do think that that Michigan State fans would be willing to a certain point to be patient to clean up the mess that was um you know the recent with the whole Mel Tucker with the way things in the program had gone downhill in every way Michigan State fans I think they would have some patience to a certain extent um and now I'm going to try to compare sort of where Michigan state is in comparison to where Michigan is and it's going to be kind of hard because I do think that there's a lot more clarity right now with Michigan State than there is with Michigan so let's go to the flip side let's talk about Michigan um Jim Harbaugh leaves and it's like that the graphic of the meme where the guy's walking away from the house and it's burning you know the old saying you know can full of gas and a handful of matches and it's hard to describe these last few years we saw a lot of there's a lot of talent that came in that program a lot of winning um but now there's a lot of uncertainty and I'm not just overreacting to these first two weeks I'm talking about overall you've got a head coach now that's never been a head coach Jim Harbaugh took assistance with him and various he took staff members and such uh Michigan has lost their offensive line and quarterback it's college football it happens and but there I I feel like there's cracks in the foundation in a lot of ways right now for Michigan uncertainty not only with what may or may not come from the NCAA and however you feel about the NCAA there could be probably will be some sort of issues with that and so when Jim Harbaugh left he did he I do feel like he walked away with things sort of imploded and in which drone Moore was trying to get assistance and hire assistance and a lot of stuff you know he had Mike Hart left and then he had what an assistant that was barely on staff that was uh what you terminated or pushed away because of the with DUI you had the um dinard Robinson's gone you had another what if was a coordinator that there's just a lot of uncertainty of guys that either were hired or going to be hired or something that just didn't work out and so Chiron Moore has been sort of handcuffed in a way of trying and that's not a good start to him trying to build rebuild sort of keep this program going the way that the expectations are and the way that he wants it and the way that Michigan fans know it to keep going and be successful it's got off to a rocky start so as of right now as crazy as it seems with Michigan having success over the past few years and for the most part even though there were Rocky times in the Jim Harbaugh era he won a lot maybe not even enough at times to please Michigan fans but still when you look at the Jim Harbaugh era they've won a lot of games now 2020 is a weird year and it was a year that um was really bad and the a low point in the Jim Harbaugh era but still it's Miss Michigan obviously huge fan base huge expectations and they've been very successful for the most part for a long time so where are these two programs when you compare it if you were a Michigan State fan I think that you're feeling really good about the direction of this program you know if you're looking at it from like a stock market comparison you would say buy stock in Michigan State because I think it's going to be rising you look at all these young guys um Nick Marsh catching passes out there and just I mean Charles Dem Marsh and there's a lot of young talent and so I think that if you're a Michigan State fan you're very optimistic and I think right now you have to be pretty happy at what you think is the direction of the program and again it's a small sample size um I know we're only two games into the shiron Moa Mo MOA Chiron Moore era um and yeah he was technically the head coach for a few games last year but there are some underlying questions right now and I'm not going to dive it too deep into what they may or may not have in recruiting Because that's is recruiting is as unstable right now in college football as there ever was with the commits and the decommits and the nil and the transfers and all that you can't predict predict things as much as you used to be able to I think if Chiron Moore I think the guy has the right mentality I love his um he's got kind of an old school he wants to be tough and physical and I think that still works even though we live in a world of Flash and high powerered I still think that if shr Moore gets the guys that he wants in and has the right staff having the right staff is is such a big part and there's been like I said earlier there's been a lot of unab unstable uh the stability hasn't been there in this first few months of trying to establish his staff and I think that's had an effect on this program so I don't know those are just my thoughts you know I think it's for moving forward what are these programs how are these programs going to go you know it's I know yesterday you don't want to overreact to losing to a national title contending team in Texas but there's underlying issues with Michigan right now with this team and in the world of college football how it's so it changes so rapidly with recruiting and the transfer portal and nil and you're talking about trying to convince 17 and 18 year olds uh you don't to 178 year olds to buy in you don't want to lose that Michigan lost that to a certain degree at times when losing in the Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hulk era when you when you're not the popular the hot uh program popular program the winning program you lose that excitement for the for the high school guys and the recruits to come in you know during the Martin Antonio era for the first few years Michigan State d dominated that series they bullied Michigan in a way that Michigan used to bully teams they became the cool program the popular program as far I mean when you compare the two people were talking about Michigan State and Michigan State was having this success that Michigan previously had and Michigan has had now they got it back in the recent years and so it's just interesting to think about the foundation right now of these two programs they both have the support as far from the fan support they have good facilities they've got the big 10 money and so which do am I overreacting and thinking that Michigan state is trending up and Michigan might be trending down is it too quickly am I making judgments based on I'm not making judgments I'm trying not to make judgments based on these two games in the first game of the season season for Michigan state was really ugly it was terrible the one thing I noticed was that the defense brought that energy that I haven't seen in a long time and yes I know they played Florida Atlantic for the first game it was ugly it was terrible Florida Atlantic if they could have somehow just put together one drive they would have won that game and then what are you thinking going into the Maryland game I'm not trying to base things off of two games in this season I'm trying to base things off of where these programs could be at Jonathan Smith comes in he builds his assistant Co he builds his coaching staff and it seemed like it was a smooth transition he brought over some guys from Oregon State you know um Chiron Moore comes in he's loses potential staff members there's a NCAA whatever you want to call it because whatever you feel about the NCAA there could be issues coming up for them down the line there's a cloud of you know there's the this overriding the all the the haters come out for the popular programs whether it's Michigan Texas Notre Dame Ohio State blah blah blah and right now now there's this overwhelming feeling all the haters want to latch on to Michigan and call it cheating and all that whether you believe it is or not whether you believe whatever happened happened there's a feeling out there that oh they cheated okay well so you've got all this Cloud hanging over you've got sort of a uh mess that Jim Harbaugh Left Behind they lost a lot of players that that have been there the last few years that won a lot very talented hardworking and good players so they're trying to rebuild in the midst of the cloud and scrutiny that comes behind them if there hadn't been that whole issue where they you know people think they're cheated or whatever I think I might feel a little bit different about the future of Michigan football but I'm just trying to get I just kind of wanted to get this off my chest you know it's just going to be an interesting ride um I think if you're a Michigan State fan you're very excited if you're a Michigan fan you're honestly you're pretty nervous there I was looking at the schedule and they've got um USC coming into an arbor USC looked if Michigan's defense if they get out coached like they did yesterday by uh Lincoln Riley and USC they off that offense at USC is going to do the same thing in some ways that Texas did yesterday and that's a scary way to look at things so Michigan's W in one they played one of the best teams in the country they played a unexperienced Texas is big on both lines Texas has a one of the best quarterbacks in the country so losing to them is not the big issue it was the way they lost they were out coached um just there was just it was embarrassing if you're a Michigan fan to lose is not is one thing but to lose that way was just but Michigan has a bigger bigger things moving forward to to I think if you're shiron Moore you're examining everything right now because you can't let this that loss the way it goes you can't let those kind of Trends move forward so I just kind of wanted to get this off my chest you know um it's kind of interesting like I I said it's interest it'll be interesting to see moving forward um to see how these programs look and and maybe there will be some clarity sooner than what we thought because when Michigan and Michigan State played this year I think people were still thinking that Michigan still had the talent and sort of the momentum from these past few years that they would beat uh rebuilding a building a new a young Michigan State team whereas maybe that might not be the case and that's a scary thought for Michigan fans that if Michigan state has a chance to beat Michigan in the first year with a new coach with a young 18-year-old quarterback with some freshman out there making plays and how that could set a foundation if you're a Michigan fan you do not want another round of 2008 and what I mean is dantonio comes in it's a bad Michigan team a building Michigan program that had a lot of uncertainty in first year uh not a first year Well a new new coach new to new to Michigan coach and Rich Rodriguez Martin Antonio laid a foundation that lasted a long time where beating Michigan was a regular thing that's a scary idea it's a scary idea for Michigan fans right now and so we've got what it's going to be um I think it's like the end of October and there's a lot to happen between now and then but like I said um that could determine that could determine where these programs go that really could because the look in state and then around the country even too of is Michigan State could they take over this rivalry again and that changes a lot for the Michigan program you know Ohio Ohio State's not going anywhere um I know I'm I'm getting off off course here but I'm going to throw AIO State into this real quick they're not going anywhere they're only going to get better they they spend money because those people down there they have no rival that's all that state is is Ohio State they have no other rival they have they seamlessly have no lives ex outside of Ohio State football they're going to dump as much money they're basically a pro team I don't know if I see Michigan beating Michigan Ohio State again for a while I know that's looking way ahead let's jump into conclusions um but I did but I think that that does relate to how they compete with Michigan State and if Michigan State goes on another D Antonio run and if it starts this year that's scary for Michigan and I'm going to leave it at that because I'm kind of just rambling on but I just wanted to get some thoughts off my chest maybe I'm overreacting maybe I don't think I am I think that it's important to take a deep dive into the foundation of these programs and think about where they could go in the short term and how that's going to affect long term um until it's been a fun it's been an interesting uh it was an interesting college football weekend that's for sure uh until next time um if you're a Michigan State fan go green go white if you're a Michigan fan go Blue um it's it's going to be a a fun ride for fans maybe a nervous ride but anyways until next time have a good day
