Intro Katy Perry continues campaigning to end her career but it speaks to a much larger conversation in the entertainment industry that goes beyond a pop stars failed attempt at a comeback men's successes will always outshine their crimes allegedly Hello everybody welcome back to my channel if you're new here hi I'm Eric I have a stutter and a very personal vested interest in this story as it involves sexual violence that continues being downplayed by society and if you're not new here what up [ __ ] in case you've been living under Rock Katy Perry has been revving up to launch her newest album 143 which is code for I love you her first single Woman's World we all remember where we were it was poorly received for its generic beats meaningless lyrics and bizarre music video that was framed as a a feminist Anthem female empowerment but lacked personality and any empowerment but the backlash wasn't because it lacks Artistry or any meaningless message it's because of her continuous collaboration with Dr Luke the infamous music producer that was sued by Kesha in 2014 for allegedly sexually abusing her when she was barely 18 a case that eventually got settled in 2023 9 years later and the case was highly publicized and sparked a huge conversation 10 years ago that everybody seems to have forgotten about or at least Katy Perry has so when Katy Perry released a feminist Anthem produced by an alleged sexual abuser obviously people had a lot to say about it there was a lot of backlash because of her connection to him this is important for context because recently she's gone on a podcast called call her Why is she working with Dr. Luke? Daddy it's hosted by Alexandra Cooper and it's a show where she interviews celebrities in a very down-to-earth casual friendly conversation it's like you're at a cafe with a friend just talking about things and they always touch on the celebrities's personal lives their careers their aspirations for the future it's it's a personal insight into who they are outside of the Limelight and a snippet of the interview has made the rounds on Twitter and uh yeah this is what she had to say I want to ask you about one collaborator in particular I know a lot of people have expressed disappointment and were really upset that you decided to involve Dr Luke on this album why did you choose to work with him look I I understand that it started a lot of conversations and he was one of many collaborators that I collaborated with but the reality is it comes from me the truth is I wrote these songs for my exper erience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that one of the writers one of the producers and I am speaking from my own experience like when I speak from when I speak about Woman's World I speak about feeling so empowered now as a mother as a woman giving birth creating life creating another set of organs a brain a heart I created a whole ass heart and I did it and I'm still doing it and I'm still a matriarch and feeling really grounded in that that's where I'm speaking from and so I created all of this with several different collaborators people that I've collaborated with from the past from Teenage Dream era all of that okay let's unpack this because this was a very non-answer answer she starts off by saying that she understands it caused a lot of conversation so it's not like she can claim ignorance she understands the conversation was going to happen so she willingly put herself in this position where she knew she'd be under intense scrutiny and she thought that it would be the best course of action to continue collaborating with him that's an interesting choice considering that she's framing this whole comeback as being about being a a mother a woman matriarchy female empowerment it sounds like a lot of bollocks it sounds almost like she's being this Pawn for the patriarchy and using her existence as a woman and as a mother to justify work working with Dr Luke how else are you going to frame that he's actually innocent and everything's okay than to have a woman collaborate with him because then it's like well if if a woman is choosing to collaborate with him a woman that was friends with his alleged victim then that has to mean that he's innocent right that there's nothing wrong with it and I think this is as smart as it is disingenuous it's smart for his whole PR campaign because here or he is Fring himself as like no I'm just working with female artists and I'm facilitating their Vision while at the same time time being incredibly disingenuous which I think people have picked up on and can see right through it it's just another attempt at getting a number one hit but then she goes on to clarify that it all comes from her from her own experiences she's the one who had this vision and I honestly see this as a gaslighting technique because people are not criticizing Woman's World because they think that it was written by a man and being about female empowerment no they're criticizing it because it's a song about female empowerment while having a an alleged abuser producer attached to it it's like an athlete launching a campaign for healthy lungs and being sponsored by a tobacco company like what so when she goes on to say that it all comes from her and it's her vision first of all not something to be proud of considering the lyrics are incredibly rudimentary and the song really is just a catchy pop tune meant to do the rounds in clubs over the summer and possibly autumn and winter rather than actually conveying this message this journey that she's been going on a spiritual journey of healing and of mother motherhood and of being a woman that's not why people criticize this you know criticism came because she branded this as a girl boss move sexy confident while actively collaborating with an alleged R she also states that she chose to work with him it all comes from her so she's very well aware of the backlash that would come from it and she still chose to go ahead with it and then she brings up the fact that she collaborated with a lot of other producers which to me just tells me that you know she didn't have to include Dr Luke she had plenty of other people helping her facilitate this Vision bring it to life so why exactly was Dr Luke so instrumental in this comeback attempt maybe because he has produced a lot of number one hits he's had a lot of success in the past so I can understand that someone wanting to really cement themselves in the music industry would want to do it with the best chances possible and that means working with a producer that has a long history of creating number one hits for several artists over decades and that's fine if that's where your values stand that you would rather have number one hits than actually stand for the message that you're trying to convey then just say that with an open chest you know instead of gaslighting people into oh no it wasn't him that wrote this you know it comes from me from my own experiences and then she goes on to to talk about the fact that she created a a whole human being inside of her mentioning her daughter which again is dodging the question and bringing up her existence as a woman and as a mother almost as a justification for why this is okay for why this project means a lot to women one point we have to discuss the fact that just because you're passionate about something or you put your your heart and soul into it doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be good or that it should be well-received if the quality is not there now this of course was just a a short snippet of the full interview which is an hour so I listened to the whole podcast to to to see if there were any other mentions to her collaborating with Luke and no there weren't in fact I think listening to the entire episode made the experience even worse as I said before this podcast call her daddy is meant to be a a more intimate conversation with an artist a celebrity and Katy Perry's interview Rest of Interview they they cover her childhood years her move to LA at 17 The Clash of cultures having come from a religious background even talking about the fact that she released I kissed a girl and her sister had to tell her parents and she says all of this in a very grounded manner you know she's very relatable she's one of us and then they touch on on her career over the years and her relationships then she mentioned her daughter speaks about her daughter and we even hear the the host mention how she lights up talking about her daughter and she talks about her spiritual journey of healing and then comes the album at the very end of the episode and this question this snippet came at the very very end it was like in the last few minutes of the conversation that's the clip and there's no follow-up question they just move on to conclude the interview and wrap it up with a a few bits of advice from Katy Perry to the host on how to handle Fame and her career Etc and it felt very deliberate cuz I don't believe for a second that Katie was not aware of all the questions that were going to be asked of her in this podcast I don't for a second believe that she was caught off guard she was very calm and very collected answering this and she she had the answer at the tip of her tongue she knew exactly what she was going to say she even deflects then to talking about how she created this whole human in in her body as as if that somehow excuses working with an alleged just because you're a mother and it doesn't mean that that every decision you make from that point onwards is going to be good because you created a human inside of you and you created a whole set of organs like what it just made the interview more jarring because they saved the the topic that everyone is talking about the thing that everyone is angry about to the very end with no real conclusion or even answer because she completely Dodges the question like why did you choose to work for Dr Luke because you wanted more number one hits it's it's it's painfully clear almost at this point and this just goes to show that we've truly cultivated a culture that silences women right like why don't they speak up because every time they do they get discredited their abusers continue thriving while the victims are pushed into silence pushed Into Obscurity and it's not just in the music industry just recently the New York Court overturned the rape conviction of Harvey Weinstein because there were too many witnesses that weren't part of the actual case cuz the case came from three three people specifically so all of these Witnesses alleging that Harvey had abused all of them were were too much so the New York Court said this convicted is going to have his conviction overturned because there are simply too many victims to take into consideration and this is the message that we're sending a Serial known in the industry proven to have Abused women over decades and decades walks away free because there's simply too many of them to count so what are women supposed to do in these cases right and then it doesn't help that other female artists are are still supporting these men under the guise of of what speaking from your own experience and he was just facilitating your vision and outside of its larger context of her career and her comeback the interview is lovely she seems like a very down-to-earth woman who despite all of her incredible success remains incredibly humble down to earth even though she's super successful she still comes home at night sometimes and she has no one she feels l like she feels everything like the rest of us despite all of her success and it just screams another PR stunt uh trying to brush all of this under the rug ahead of the release of the album which is set to be a a big disappointment thankfully thankfully people are are more aware more more in tune with what's happening they're not letting her walk away from this scot-free as they shouldn't we should be calling out these things especially if they are aware and it's not just Kesha there have been a number of artists notably Kelly Clarkson who did not want to work with him the second time around because he was so abusive this was before 2014 before the court case even came forth Kelly Clarin said that he was an [ __ ] to everyone no one liked to work with him because he was abusive he was he was mean he mistreated people constantly but I really just I just didn't want to and especially at that time I was so frustrated that I had that I was forced to work like basically they were going to sit on my record unless I did what they wanted and I was so frustrated because I literally said anyone in the world but this one person I will work with anyone you want to put in my path like I love people I think that's a parent like I think I'm a nice person that's a parent but like it was just this one thing and and and I asked not to work with Dr Le just because I had a not a good experience with him and I never do that so if an artist like me like I'm yeah you like you talk to everybody I generally love everyone like it you have to really be a special kind of jerk yeah for me not to like you like so it's it you know and I just had a negative experience the guy is super talented I'm not negating that like that that's a fact obviously but it just was something I didn't want and so it frustrated me and I was like you know what they brought up R and credit at the end because they were like well you changed the song and I was like I don't want my name near his I don't even want I want to pretend this didn't happen in my life and I want to forget it so it's not like this accusation came in a vacuum you know it had a long history of people pointing out that he's not a good person but somehow he continues to work and create number one hits even recently he won another award he even worked for a while under a different name one of them was made in China like what and don't get me wrong Katy Perry is not the only one that still works with Dr Luke there's a number of other artists notably uh Kim Petra and DOA cat who have recently collaborated with him but I think the difference is that Katy Perry continues to Brand herself as this feminist Pioneer she even mentions in her interview that she's a matriarch and I'm still doing it and I'm still a matriarch and while actively being a puppet for the patriarchy because that's what the patriarchy does the patriarchy allows men to get away with everything and that's why I said it initially in my video that men's successes continue to outweigh their crimes because here you have Dr Luke with so much success in the music industry that people would rather work with him and ignore all of his alleged crimes than to actually speak up and be like no actually I'd rather work with other producers maybe I won't get a a number one hit maybe I won't get a huge launch of my album maybe I won't find as much success but at least I'll be able to sleep at night knowing that I didn't contribute to lining the pockets of yet another but let's see what people have to say about this shall we why is she acting like she's the first woman that ever gave birth like what does giving birth have to do with anything with a question exactly this is clearly a deflection tactic that she's using to to actually no no no don't forget that I'm a mother don't forget that I gave birth recently like how how could I be doing something wrong if I'm a woman a woman that is also a mother a matriarch another user said funny how she probably chose to work with him thinking it would be a guaranteed hit that would transcend any backlash it got and now she just has a flop album produced by a well not funny so much as embarrassing oh well exactly this is what she should have said I worked with Dr Luke because I found success in the past and I wanted more success in the future and I don't care that he has been accused of sexually abusing women would there be a lot of backlash 100% but at least she would be honest you know cuz people people can see that this was just another cash grab attempt at jumping up to the top 10 of whatever and instead luckily it backfired tremendously beautifully and honestly you know you're in trouble when you're a female pop star that gays have adored and that gays have now disavowed despite her feeble attempts on Instagram of of stating that she doesn't do it for the male gays she does it for the male gays girl no I don't think the gays want you to collaborate with a to make generic pop songs that no one is going to remember in a month they want you to stand for something literally anything other than this uh girl boss aesthetic that really isn't saying anything about you or women everywhere it's just I don't even know what it is it's disappointing that's what it is it's disappointing that after so many years and so many hits this is what she chooses to do with her career but again she's not the only one that that does it it's just that she's a little bit more vocal about her feminist intentions which aren't really there right another user said well from her own lips to your ears Katie chose to work with Dr Luke she wasn't contractually bound so what's the next script Katie C because this had been one of the defenses of her fans is that maybe she was contractually obligated like Kesha was to remain under under Dr Luke's thumb but now she she's openly admitted that it came from her she chose to do this so there really is no way to defend it anymore there's no way to to claim ignorance or claim like contractual obligation she couldn't get out of no she she knowingly did it she did it on purpose she chose to do it and you know what this is the reward play stupid games Win stupid prizes and lastly this user said her mentioning how empowered she felt after having her daughter and then working knowingly working with a is saying that her own daughter should work with abusive people just for shits and giggles that is a dangerous setting in story to say Katy Perry let's remember that they have a platform and they have a message something they stand for and if if this is what she does then yeah this is sort of the message that she's sending it's okay to work with whoever as long as it brings you success and that's AED up thing to stand for really fed up but it's not just Katy Perry it's the industry at large that continues to protect men because they are talented not just men though white men because we've seen a lot of black creators being completely shunned out of existence for way less serious crimes so yeah I guess Final Thoughts now we all know where where she stands with with this whole issue and as disappointing as it is because I I used to be a Katy Perry fan as well I was a fan of hers but it's it's impossible to ignore the the the just the the whole mess that this is that isn't just a mess for clicks and Views and drama it's it's a mess that speaks again to a larger conversation and honestly it needs to change hopefully if her album flops enough people will start realizing that actually you shouldn't work with awful people no matter how great their work has been in the past and hopefully she soon realizes that this ain't it and that she could be doing a lot better with her platform and with her art than continuously working with Dr Luke and with that said thank you so much for tuning in if you like this video feel free to leave it a like down below subscribe to my channel click that Bell notification so you never miss a future upload from me also follow me on my social media Eric Silver C on Instagram and stutterbox on Tik
