[Music] it's trouble brewing in the bay at the start of 49ers training camp that's going to be a big topic here on today's episode of four verts my name is Harrison Graham some interesting nuggets on Brandon iuk and of course uh our good pal Trent Williams as well as neither are practicing at this point in time both want new contract we're going to talk about that but first listen round of Milestone which is 200 subscribers all right Brandon I you who has had a drama filled off season where really since the Super Bowl has ended all kinds of things have been said have been posted on social media he's uh putting uh commanders mini camp Clips on his Instagram story of course his old pal Jaden Daniels the quarterback there uh he wants a new contract and he's holding in which is what most players who want new deals now they hold in to avoid the fine so they report to training camp and they're at the meetings they're on the sideline but they're not practicing they're not risking injury and that's what he's doing he wants a new contract and up to this point in time the 49ers have not budged they have held firm and they have not paid him what he wants as he's set to make 15 a half million bucks in the final year of his 5-year rookie contract and the question here is what is Brandon iuk because this is a very unique situation with San Francisco because iuk wants over $30 million per year or at least $30 million per year that's what's been reported it sounds like the 49ers will go H 26 27 maybe 28 we're not giving you 30 plus and you might say Harrison why would they not pay him he's as talented as am Monro St Brown he's not far off from AJ Brown and that might be true but I think the 49ers are unique because you have to look at how their football team is built it's why they gave Christian mcaffrey a $7 million pay raise last month without much hesitation because they are a run first football team they were 32nd in pass rate last year as good as BR part he was and as efficient as he is they run the football more than anybody else so Christian mcaffry wants a pay raise yep we're going to get that done for you because we run through you Brandon auk as good as he is as great as a route Runner is and a player that I think they need to keep in San Francisco to maximize BR biry success in this 2024 season he's never going to be a super high volume guy in that offense I think the most catches he has in a in a season is 75 yeah am mon Ro St Brown CAU 119 balls last year we could debate till the cows come home who the better player is if you put iuk in Detroit he might catch 110 balls as well but that's not the situation he's in San Francisco under contract and they're trying to win a Super Bowl but they're also sitting there saying hey man listen we're going to pay you and we're going to pay you big money but we can't make you the third highest paid receiver when we throw the ball the least especially among competitive football teams so this thing's going to get really really interesting uh as we move forward uh throughout the next month we've seen San Francisco get deals done at the buzzer Nick Bosa Fred Warner a couple of guys that got done right before Seasons uh in Prior year so this isn't Uncharted territory but I think this is unique in the sense of they like the player a lot they think he helps them win but they also drafted a guy in Ricky peol in the first round albeit he is on the pup list they do have Deo saniel who they've already paid which that throws a wrench into this as well so what do you do if you are the 49ers I think they find a way to get this done in the end because Brock pie and the numbers show this when one of iuk Deo kid or Trent Williams was out last year Williams or mcaffry one of those two his numbers go down significantly when they're all healthy especially with auk he's much better he's M much more efficient you can't afford to lose Brandon iuk especially not now like if you were going to move him before this season it needed to happen before the draft so you could either get so you could get draft Capital form him now the one exception could be is can they find a swap right like there's been the Deep rumors of could you swap him for Devonte Adams right maybe Adams isn't happy in Vegas if that was on the table I would consider it uh if I was San Francisco but if it's not and if you can't find a win now player for this year you're talking about draft capitals for next year you'd have to be overwhelmed because this is a critical season for the San Francisco 49ers uh in terms of their pursuit of a Super Bowl which they've been very very close in recent years keep it brain and iuk certainly helps you do that I don't know if that means they're going to reset the market with him obviously not Justin Jefferson money but could he top St Brown could he top AJ Brown I don't think they're going to do that with him maybe a potential solution is to kind of do what the Chiefs did with Chris Jones last year where hey we're going to give you a big raise on this year's contract so your final year instead of making 15 16 million hey let's bump you up to 28 million this year fully guaranteed revisit this next off seon when uh Debo we can get him off the books or when we can reassess where we want to put our resources now is that good enough to please auk I don't know he probably wants long-term security but that could be an option if both sides uh want to consider going down that route now Trent Williams here he wants more money and he's holding out for a pay raise now he's 35 years old going to be 36 three years left in his deal uh with decent cash payouts but there's no guaranteed salary left so he needs security and kind of like the Christian mcaffrey situation he is in a situation where he has more leverage than Brandon auk does because the 49ers offensive line without Trent Williams is pretty average they're not great at right tackle Colton mckivitz is below average their interior is average to above average like it's okay it's serviceable like Trent Williams makes up for a lot of their issues up front Williams can say what are you going to do not pay me you're screwed up front you're going to have a backup swing level left tackle an average at best right tackle and an a aage to above average uh interior for a team that wants to run the football out with Christian mcaffry you can't do it so I think light mcaffrey if I had to BET right now who's going to get his money more or quicker Trent Williams or Brandon iuk I think it's going to be Trent Williams and he's probably sitting there saying too like listen I'm 35 years old I I'm I'm one of if not still the best left tackle in the NFL pay me or I'm walking away like he he can play that card whether he wants to or not and with him holding out and not even being at the facility that is the difference here he's willing to take fines he's not even at practice uh he is he is telling you just that like yeah I'll I'll I I'll sit at home until we work something out so he's got more leverage than iuk it's not that iuk has none but it's different because the 49ers again can push back and say we're not a pass happy team we're balanced we like to run the football we've already paid a wide receiver big money in dvo Samuel uh whereas Trent Williams he's not on that offensive line that unit kind of crumbles so I think uh it's just a completely different situation and you know I don't think it's Panic time you know we're very early on in this process we're not even into the month of August but I you just feel like this is a vital year for this organization they have been knocking on the door for a while Jimmy garoo in 2019 got them to the Super Bowl 10-point lead with about 10 minutes to go couldn't seal the deal against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs last year got there again and had a double digit lead again couldn't SE seal the deal and with Brock pie being eligible for a contract extension next year which they're going to give him unless he has a really bad year this year this is kind of their best chance at least with this full core because once you pay Brock pie some of these other guys aren't getting next deals right like dvo Samuel does anyone think the Niners are paying him another contract like it's more likely that he's out after this year uh then he's uh here on another deal beyond the remainder of his contract which runs through next season George KD he may have to take less if he wants to return long term Fred Warner is getting a little bit older Dre Greenlaw tours Achilles last year and he may not be here long term Trent Williams isn't going to play Forever like this is your chance so I'm not saying you just you know bow down to whatever Brandon iuk wants in terms of these negotiations but you got to keep them around man because what did we see in the Super Bowl he was the only guy who could somewhat consistently create separation Debo Samuel was put in handcuffs by that Chief secondary and I know leria sne is gone but if they match up again and auk is not on the 49ers offense that's Advantage Chiefs big time because they feel comfortable playing man coverage with Debo and then it just kind of KD and mcaffrey as the two receiving weapons unless piol or Jennings really take a step here Piera rookie Jan Jennings nice number three number four receiver but that's kind of all he is they need Brandon auk out there especially for this year which is why I kind of hinted at the maybe you just give him a big pay raise this year and you figure out long-term later if he's willing to agree with that if not I think you're going to have to pay them even if it's not crazy money you got to get closer to 30 than you've been because because uh I just don't think uh at this point in time he's going to he's going to play for 15 million bucks I think he's made that pretty clear so uh we'll see how it progresses maybe he decides to start practicing and he's willing to play this year out but you know top what five and six in receiving yards last year on a team that doesn't throw the ball high volume am of the time I I I think the ners especially if they're serious about winning a Super Bowl this year they're going to have to find a solution for Brandon iuk I'm not worried about the Trent Williams situation they're going to pay him but I think they're going to have to pay Brandon as well all right that's going to do it for today's episode of four verts where we cover big NFL and college football
