some days in a Major League Baseball season which is 162 games long a refresher is a good idea and that's what the Tigers got yesterday in the fun and the Sun and the surf of San Diego California as Tigers baseball is presented by figer law and right back on the schedule to Petco Park in downtown San Diego and here are the standings in the AL wildcard race Kansas City has lost seven in a row they're leading against Cleveland right now as we hit air we'll see if that goes final as keiths mentioned the twins have lost already to Tampa Bay so a chance to pick up some ground again Jason benetti Dan Petri Natalie CER in a moment it seems like every time we look at the scoreboard the teams that need to lose are losing in the American League it is and actually the tigers with the off day yesterday picked up a half a game so you know Tigers can't do anything wrong but of course it'd be better if they win and take care of their own destiny got to bank some wins you darish the opponent for Kar Montero tonight yeah ker Montero is uh this going to be a good test for him today this is a really good lineup but also they alternate they go left-handed right-handed left-handed right-handed so he can't get real comfortable facing a good pocket of left-handed hitters or a good pocket of right-handed hitters but you know what you walk in the clubhouse today he's looks like he's unfaced he's nice and relaxed on the other side you darish I mean this guy's got eight different pitches I mean and he throws them all at different speeds he's got that little deceptive little delivery that little Hitchin his delivery but let's see how healthy he is how sharp he'll be and what kind of pitch count he'll be on just coming back uh off an injury injury Plus restricted list it's been a while for darish he'll face mono one more thing is about pitchers when we come back but not in the way you expect Pizza Pizza Tigers baseball is brought to you by coer Bank raise your expectations of what a bank can be come to coer by Wallside Windows half off every window plus 22% off at Wallside decom by fer law all we do is win and by GMC visit your closest GMC dealer today for exceptional offers the two tigers pitchers to Homer in this DH era including Daniel Norris at Wrigley Field against the Cubs August 19th 2015 the celebration along with it you know you come to a national league ballpark late in the season like this you start lamenting the loss of pitchers swinging the bat you know not because of Any context or anything West frell hit 37 home runs since 1906 1927 to 41 you're wondering why are we talking about this maybe the iconic home run for a pitcher against any other pitcher happened in this ballpark lone looking for his first hit of the year he drives one deep left fi be goes Upton back near the wall it's out of here Baro has done it the impossible has happened his first career home run and there will be nobody in The Dugout to greet him this is one of the Great Moments in the history of baseball Baro cologne has gone deep Gary Cohen is not prone to hyperbole he's one of the best announcers that's ever done baseball it was one of those moments ballpark nobody's there to greet him you know remember how good he was I mean as a pitcher and he was throwing 98% fast ball just like just boom boom boom coming right at you I I mean and that's just who said pitchers can't hit a lot of people that's why we have the universal DH it's amazing to relive and and getting to know James Shields a little bit he never wanted to hear about that oh I bet yeah he lives on forever oh my God Baro that one's for you here at pedco Park the site of one of the great home runs in baseball history first pitch tonight is next so the locals here in San Diego I've had three people tell me today it's too hot it's 76 but it's too humid somebody literally said to me seeing the Tiger's logo on my shirt they said you brought your weather brought the humidity I was like what are you talking about this is Paradise I thought it was a little foggy this morning I was like what what are you talk what do you think weather is it never rains you barely have a tarp it's amazing this is a bad day here you're right where is the tarp yeah they don't have one why would you have one it never rains we see we see storm clouds that look like the Wicked Witch of the West is coming wants a home stand and they're like this is terrible I can see the headline on social media Tigers announcers roast San diegans that's not what we mean we love it here it's fantastic but this is not terrible weather I'll take this any day of the week I mean yesterday I mean again it was beautiful it it is again tonight it's humid 76 okay enough of this tiger batting order presented by your Southeast Michigan Ford dealers slugging versus breaking balls and you darish has a whole Treasure Trove of those Parker Meadows at 500 Matt verling at 463 Spencer Tolson 489 Trey Sweeny 455 above League average and as you're picking at home figer law pick the stick maybe you choose somebody based on this because he will throw ample breaking balls yes he is and he's making his first start since May 29th he faced 18 hit and threw 66 pitches in in what they call a controlled environment down at their their Spring Training Site in Peoria and he relies heavily as Jason said on those breaking pitches the slider sweeper curveball specifically and he'll drop down to all different arm angles all different speeds all different shapes so those three will turn into probably six different 12th year in Major League Baseball for you darish and the defense behind him has jxs and so far in left Jackson Maryland Center and the second game back for Fernando tatis Jr it's Machado and McCoy Bogarts and cronenworth then Luis cusano is the catcher for the San Diego Padres they're 79 and 61 they had 44,000 plus people here on Monday for the holiday and it's a sizable crowd once again and rightfully so with the Padres right now the number one wild card team in the National League they're a half game up on the Arizona Diamondback tigers are trying to continue this surge here in September first pitch tonight from Petco is downstairs ball number one to Parker Meadows it was nothing for three with two flyy outs to Center in the opener this is a Padre's team that's a little like wizard of ozish they're getting together on the yellow brick road darish is back and tatis is back and there are signs of life that they already had growing into something more no you're right and I think think they're really happy with both those additions Fernando tatis Jr but also you Darvis just to kind of really solidify that starting staff AJ hinch has been really impressed with a bullpen for San Diego there's the first strike for you darish so you mentioned we'll see what the pitch count is tonight but for AJ hinch you're dealing with a bullpen that is very strong and quite varied and the other yeah they've got what five right-handers four left-handers that drops in for a strike it's a fast ball to the Bottom Rung two and two they had the day off yesterday as the Tigers did so that Bullpen is going to be well rested Adam Scott and Suarez had thrown back to back we'll see if they use them three out of four they certainly could this is popped up Third Base side foul territory cerano is there to make the catch for the first out of tonight's ball game so you darish has a menu be fitting whatever chain restaurant you would choose that has the widest menu I know where you would ideally go with that but they're not a sponsor this is statcast powered by Google cloud and they keep they keep adding yeah and the thing that I found interesting was look at at the bottom of the strike zone the majority of them you don't really see that four seamer is the one that everybody talks about being at the top of the strike zone that was more in about the middle of the strike zone so every down Dan Bolino says ball one to Riley green who doubled in the eighth inning and gave the Tigers a chance the other day Seth Lugo is one of the guys chasing TK scoel for the Sai Young Award in the American League he pitched tonight for Kansas City but we have seen when you add pitches especially in another fastball right it creates a real bind for hitters it does and we've seen it in the bullpen for the Tigers they've really grown that way and and I wouldn't say just the bullpen I mean for instance ree Olen has been really a guy that's really made both those fast balls work one and two on Riley green we expected this would be a low-scoring series I mean San Diego's offense is talented they're number one in batting average in the league and that's not the only metric they're good at but they're number one there this is a ballpark that plays pretty large and so the Padres put the game away with a couple of runs in the eighth but this was one- nothing almost throughout on Monday grounded foul no that it was a really good game on Monday and the one run for so long was an unearned run and then they just broke it open in that eighth inning where they scored a couple but uh it was a really good game really well pitched Joe Musgrove I mean really had good stuff and now it's just a matter of hopefully you Darvish is not not just sharp yet still working his way back one and two Falls low a slider two balls two strikes and good news is that it's an average of five pitches per plate appearance here in the first inning so far for the Tigers trying to be patient with darish to two grounded foul first base side you know I've always really liked watching you darish in his delivery as you see you know Kaya has that little bit of hesitation you Darvis that little bit of of hesitation but I I just think it gives him a chance to have his arm catch up as he's got that little pause up there mhm and then gathers himself and then just is able to thrust everything towards home plate what's the concern if you haven't pitched for 3 months on a Major League Mount and I and I just think it's it's how what kind of command are you going to have not throwing strikes but command with all your pitches are you going to be able to put them where you want executing that was a fastball middle middle and pretty much no pitcher wants to throw the ball there and I'm thinking that he's probably saying you know what it's three and two it's the first inning I'm going to come right after him and sometimes you can get hurt that way you can give up a quick home run and uh a lot of times that's all that there is so you do have to be careful especially against a hitter like Riley green Riley sprays a curve ball foul and this will be a 10 pitch sequence or so for Riley green this will be the 10th one coming up see Darvish showing some perspiration already bigger hesitation three and two struck him out it's a slider that was right around the corner two down yeah let's see if this is just off the outside Riley green taking no chance here it starts outside and because he throws so many Breaking pitches yeah right on that outside corner but it's too close to take Riley just can't catch up swings a little underneath it Matt ver Ling has seen a steady tie of fast balls this year 61% from the opposition which is a pretty tall number and he'll look at a cold strike that draws a question to Dan Bolino the plate umpire about half of vierlings home runs have come on breaking balls eight against the fast ball seven against breaking balls and here he bloops it foul first base side and this will find the seats we're talking about the command but those first two pitches a sinker down and away I mean dotted right there borderline but right on that outside corner and then that breaking ball that sweeper right on the outside corner also so campasano sitting up right on that outside corner and that's exactly where darish is putting it veteran pitcher who's been outstanding for a career with an erra at three and a half verling tags this ball deep left field it is gone two strike h on Matt verling that's a fast ball way up and it's inside we're just talking about how they wanted those pitches away away and let's we'll we'll see the replay and campasano sitting up on the outside part of the plate this somehow just leaks back over the inside and we've seen Matt vering destroy pitches inside and he was looking inside and he didn't miss it he and Montero with a pizza salute as the Tigers have grabbed the lead and there's a big swing from Carri Carpenter what a week for Matt verling Notre Dame wins and then homers in the first inning here tonight you know and he had good swings on Monday too yeah he did two for four yep couple of hits 01 you know Darvish one year it was 2019 he led the league in home runs allowed with 33 of them but he's been very good in his career giving up solo homers his erra that year when he gave up the most home runs in the league was under four and that's the whole idea if you're going to throw first pitch strikes you're going to throw a lot of strikes and you're not going to walk people you are going to be challenging and you will will be susceptible to giving up the long ball I just think he's going to be a little upset that it happened on an 02 pitch mhm that Ball's cranked to right field Carri Carpenter drops it in for a base hit tatis all the way to the warning track back he's going to spin it back in Carpenter beat him for a two out double loud contact verling started it a little bit off the end of the bat wasn't it yeah just you see campasano though he's stretching his glove out on the outside part of the plate and then Matt verling just pulls those hands in but I mean just to just to be able to make that quick decision where you just got two pitches on the outside part of the plate and you're thinking they got to go go out there again and was just able to catch up to that fast ball I mean I that's not easy to do that's impressive by Matt beerley so then you get Carpenter getting a slider here yeah that's that happy Zone down and in and the tiger hitters know that they're going to see a good amount of breaking pitches and he knows that tatis is going to be able to throw that ball well from right field and you saw him turn on the Jets right there and saying yeah he's got a good arm there's smiling a little bit out there like yeah you can throw I know and that's why I was sprinting to second base and just got in ahead of the throw you see the arm strengths out there tatis has one of the best arms in Major League Baseball profar is an infielder by trade and Jackson Merill out there in Center if he can avoid the mound can throw people out as well here's Keith Matt verling came into this season with 18 home runs to his name in three years off and on in Major League Baseball he's got 16 a career high shattering his previous at 10 and that's what he designed himself what he wanted to do in the off season and he achieved it he told Dan Dickerson and myself on the top of the green monster at Fenway Park back in May this is where I want to hit the ball left field pull side pul side power and he did it without sacrificing the rest of himself see that's the other thing you know you can get pull happy and I think Spencer Tolson talked about that he was selling out to pull it you know he was trying to pull everything and opening up and then that what that's what made him susceptible to the pitch on the outside part of the plate just kind of opening up and pulling your head off and just pulling that left shoulder and Matt verling besides all of that was able to take and drive the ball the other way too into right field one two wave at a Miss strike three the slider ends the inning don't throw the ball inside to Matt verling Dan look at him pull those hands in too it's amazing after those two on the outside corner well done Matt verley one I think tigers on the home run for Matt verling to left field F just short of Baro cologne territory to give the Tigers a one- nothing lead and here is the Padres batting order presented by your Metro Detroit Chevy dealers so ker Montero trying to throw a bunch of strikes tonight first pitch swing rate for the Padres tatis has a big number Machado has a big number Jackson Merill does as well we'll see how aggressive they are with Montero the young right-hander at 24 years old he fires a strike to arise who typically is patient and the starting pitcher presented by Wallside Windows yeah and he just took that pitch had no aspirations of swinging at that just I'm going to get a good look at this but ker Montero has now gone 11 straight starts throwing at least five innings the pitch com again pitchcrow along with Dylan dingler there should be an instruction manual you know typically when something like this happens the support people say just hit control all delete just reset it just turn it off and yeah yeah did you try to reboot the power right and you say yeah of course it's the first thing I tried and then I called you it's the only thing I know how to do stop telling us to reboot the power supply this is so so frustrating though right you know exactly what I'm talking about of course I do yes I did that that's the only thing I know how to do okay here is arise a little Tapper back to the mound Montero handles one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball and AJ hinch said look like number one thing quick outs for Montero quick Innings quick outs Riley green Parker Meadows Matt beerling in the Outfield it's young and Sweeny and Keith and tlon in the infield Dylan dingler behind the plate and here comes Fernando tatis Jr who was 0 for four in his return to Petco Park just Monday first pitch fouled away and just getting back to Montero he was 3 and2 with a 382 erra in the month of August lowering his erra by a good full point he continues to work on that Sinker and that slider combination we got in on the fists on tatis and here is Trey Sweeney that is four pitches to two outs and I bet you there is a manager in the tiger Dugout right now who is real happy even if his face doesn't show it and with two first pitch strikes too and that's the thing about Kar is he's just he's nice and relaxed he's unfazed you know you don't talk to the starting pitcher when you go into the clubhouse today and I we locked eyes and he just smiled you know just like kind of nodded his head you know and I gave him a little thumbs up like hey good luck today you know and he just was like nothing just completely unfazed just over talking to car Carlos Gan just relaxing him getting him ready for this start well Carlos is one of the most likable people in the travel party he is and why didn't you agree right away no I was just thinking about his about you know just how their conversation and how he was relaxing him mhm 3 and0 on profile San Diego is not much of a first pitch swing team they are ninth lowest in Major League Baseball both these teams are very patient on first pitches and we'll see if the Padres can make good on that against Montero three and0 in there jerks and proar who it's amazing to say made his major league debut in 2012 he's just 31 but he's been around for so long and of that island of curao which provided Andrew Jones among so many other great baseball players but I me it he debuted at 19 Pro far D Bogarts is Bogart's from Kira I think he is was from Aruba Ah that's right that's right o boy he D thought he had it Matt verling is of the belief that he got a strike called on him that was worse than this ooh the change up just faded over the plate and you could see how you might give up on it the way it swerved back and I think that's exactly right J it it started off into that other that in the Batters box and just gave up on it and it just kept swinging back Dylan Dinger did a nice job of catching that and framing it too but just unable to get the call I do think it's harder to umpire now than it ever has been with pitch design what it is you're right just the sheer movement and velocity on every pitch too that ball was in until it wasn't and it was a beautiful pitch but it's so deceptive that sometimes an Umpire can give up on it and it is I mean that's a that's a lot of tail on that change up yes it almost ran like a sinker it did and I and I wonder if you would say okay was it inside or was it low and what the answer would be Manny Machado Skyward right field side that's called Keith in Pursuit and he makes the catch so the walk doesn't matter it only costs three pitches and we move on to the second with the Tigers leading if the Tigers scor three or more runs in this game you can visit a participating RV's location tomorrow and receive a free small order of curly fries like Norm Gunderson from Fargo Tigers leading one nothing here in San Diego a lot of tigers fans here I I've been so impressed with how Tigers fans travel to every city we've been to it is and it's been that way for 45 years since since I started playing and awesome up until now yep no matter where you are I ran into somebody visiting from Stevensville yesterday and uh visiting his daughter out here they're just yeah no matter what city they are they're they're going to be tiger fans everywhere every section got a city connect Jersey there sitting next to an old school Padres Jersey that's the that's the full kit in Kaboodle was a lion lion hat too wasn't it that's just fullon Detroit yeah yeah where's he's got to have like wings khakis on or something two and one to torque close three and one you've seen some of the scroll off the B bar and the score is going on right now in Major League Baseball Boston did lose to drop to 70 and 69 so the Tigers and Red Sox have the same record as there is ball four torque takes a walk to lead off to second hey now a message from the southeast Michigan Ford dealers returning easy plan lesies can lease a 2024 F-150 XLT 4x4 Super Crew for 329 a month for 24 months only at your Southeast Michigan Ford dealers Chas young whose brother just had a walkoff the other day homeall run in Texas facing Darvish there's the slider to the outside corner nothing in one 10 hits so far in his major league career for jce young looking for that first home run yeah the command has been spotty at best so far for gar yeah and that one Sinker that he threw to Spencer Tolson may have caught the top of the strike zone but he didn't get the call and ends up walking Spencer Tolson but it's all about we saw Joe Musgrove the other day Landing though that curve ball that was just it's a great pitch for him and you darish throw a lot of these but they're just going to spit on them if he's not going to be able to command them and throw them for strikes first base side and through it's a base knock for young torque slows into a stop at second yeah came in with with that fast ball Jace Young waiting for it lines it right into that hole even though chinworth was able to get off the bag in anticipation of the Swing not far enough to find that right field hole and Spencer terson just immediately put on the brakes he went in hard to second base but put on the brakes said I'm not going to challenge that arm of Fernando tatis Jr yeah no need no Trey Sweeney takes ball one Sweeny had his first major league home run at darvish's former hauns at Wrigley Field he was a cub from 2018 to 2020 a big swing on that inside fast ball right there saying you know what I got a good hitters count here I don't want to take a chance that he's going to start mixing in that break and stuff if I get a fast ball I'm going to take a big swing and he did just couldn't connect one1 in the dirt bouncing away everybody advances second and third nobody Out Boy really good secondary lead by Spencer Tolson and Jace Young but as soon as as that ball goes down into the dirt they both read the trajectory of the pitch going down and what Spencer he didn't I mean he was just shuffling off as soon as the ball went in the dirt he was taken off and it carmed over to the Tigers portion of the Dugout and they both were able to advance into scoring position long outing already for darish 37 pitches nobody out second inning and that breaking ball Fades away three and one this could be all handson deck for the Padre's Bullpen if the Tigers play their cards right yeah and what a what a great deal that would be to get into that Bullpen wear it out help you out tomorrow three and one swinging at a Miss slider Sinker have been his two best pitches so far tonight for my money yeah and I think that slider too is just a little bit smaller than the curveball and the sweeper so you're able to connect and throw that for more strikes a little bit less break to it 32 struck him out on another slider and you're right Jason you know when you get to that feeling you're feeling good about a certain pitch so you're in a jam three and one you come back you drop in that slider and that's a good one and then three and two another one and that's a good pitch good sharp break to it especially when you're behind three and one and have to throw two in a row and he did just that darish has not gotten a right-hander out so far and the infield playing back left side which means this throw is going to go to First and the Tigers will get a run you look out and Survey the scene if you're Dylan dingler that's free money on a ground ball to short stop for a two nothing lead and and you wonder if the Padres are just feeling that they're going to trust their off defense and they figure that they're going to be able to get to kere Montero but you know that AJ wouldn't do that AJ I mean right away would say I'm playing my infield in I'm not going to take any chances I'm cutting off every possible run and right where that ball was hit would have been right at the short stop if he were playing in on the grass also in the air left field side I was just getting ready to say like Luis arise surveys the scene as he walks into the Batters box and knowing that that is a freebie right there all he got to do is wrap a ball to Short Stop he did and the Tigers will take the Run they sure will and good for Dylan dingler too you know able to to drive in a run been a little bit of a struggle for him recently at the plate and hopefully that gives him a little bit con a little bit of confidence if it's available there's no reason to consider that anything but a good at that yeah I you know and and uh it's not about okay I got a lift now you know where it puts the pressure on you if the infield is in oh man I got a lift I got to get it to the Outfield here it's just contact I think that's a great point in this era you can create a sense of doubt in a hitter's mind or intent that maybe he wouldn't have if you have the infield a that's a great point you know like I got to change everything about my Approach now not only do I have to think about what the pitcher is going to throw but I have to change my approach to make sure I get underneath it one two little tap her foul 45 pitches for darish one two one hopper cusano should have Hazard pay so far tonight yeah I I think that's the first split finger that that he's thrown U darish may have thrown one other one but uh just don't see that many of them and just pulling it out there on Parker Meadows you see the that quarter of the time off the valley bar he's four seamer two strikes but you know it's basically spin the wheel see what you get it's a slider Meadows in the air center field and Jackson Merill does have room Tigers will take the run thank you very much two nothing wow yeah not quite I know how old are you 42 is that what I'd be if it was 72 no you'd be 52 okay yeah I I didn't I was told there'd be no math I'm asking you I'm not even trying no I it's West Coast Tigers baseball 02 right center field and down that's a hit Meadows had a long way to go cronenworth Strokes a single to Center first hit for the Padres that was Milt papis by the way in 1972 Keats and it was nearly to the day it was September 2nd 1972 yeah to change up out over the plate and it sounded like it right off the end of the bat and Parker Meadows was sizing that ball up you could see that he was just getting ready to think about laying out for that and I think he thought better like ah let me hold him to a single that ball gets by me it's going to be for sure extra bases and boy but he was thinking about it hard he was and and that's the rare occasion where the Tigers have not been perfectly placed in the Outfield but part of it is the pitch type and location this has been a tremendous Outfield defense at turning fly balls into outs this year for the Tigers yeah I I still am just really amazed at that you know the positioning of the outfielders but but also the infielders I just know as a former pitcher and you give up something hard hit right back at you up the middle you think them automatically base hit and right now tigers are standing there yep you know AJ talks about the Outfield and it's a good point I me there are three center fielders in the Outfield yeah Green Meadows beerling you know and and and I I told you I got caught up on the have a seat podcast with Parker Meadows and talking about you know how he in in early in his career he really didn't take the pre pitch setup you know he says I was just being pretty out there and he he's certainly a lot different now and gets those good jumps oh nasty slider from Montero his first strikeout tonight is Xander Bogarts now this is just a well-located slider that's the one that they're working on right now it's a little bit smaller than the typical slider that he throws and it is just well located and it's 87 he's been averaging right around 82 round ball through off a curveball cronenworth to Third the curveball is been a work in progress for Montero and Merill saw it on the first pitch yeah you think see how that's why they want his slider to be a little bit quicker so it doesn't pop out of his hands I think that curveball popped out of his hands and when I mean popping out of there it just goes up before it goes down so the hitter just sees that and he's going to say okay wait a minute that's a different trajectory it's going up first I know it's a curveball so Jackson Marill was able to recognize it and line it up the middle here is capano check swinging a foul it is the only pitch for Montero that does that is is why you say that right that it goes straight up right and and and I think they're saying that on some sliders it does it too and that's why they're trying to get him to shorten it up a little bit and also speed it up for that same reason as we saw on Xander Bogarts for first got him huge Merill picked off we'll see if the Padre's challenge they're going to challenge Mike Schultz says let's take a look B Cousy had the call he was lean it yes he was he was going San Diego is challenging the out call at first base the previous play is under review ooh can you overturn remember the call on the field is out there's his fingertip and is the shadow I you I'm just looking at the shadow of the glove it looks like yeah when does he touch him is the question in hand here right and again the the tassel the Thrills of the glove don't count it has to be the glove proper that that hits him in the back in my understanding of it it has to be more than the the tassels I was trying to think of what happened in the in the playoffs last year that somebody was called out stealing a base I think I thought yeah I'm not I'm I'm not sure I don't want to say that we'll see what they come up with in New York yeah yeah that's hard to say you got that the shadow there just on his back and they're taking a long time to to review this but I don't know how they would see a tassel hitting the the back you know they're more looking at the yeah it's not really what we were talking about isn't really relevant there because I don't think there's any difference at that point but you know if you had like long tassel I was going to say yeah 6 in tassels you could just flip up by them exactly yeah I think you what you might have been thinking about is if you touch somebody's equipment that's attached to their body maybe that's what it was the batting glove that counts that's what I think it was yeah I think it was the batting glove that I'm thinking of yeah where the the batting glove was tucked out of their pocket that's exactly and they went and swiped and got the batting glove I'll tell you the rule on that in one second after review the ruling on the field is overturn the run is call Just for future reference the what you're talking about that's exactly what it is it the its equipment shall be considered worn by a player or umpire if it's in contact with its intended place on his person so if it's a batting glove on his hand that counts if it's in his pocket it does not count yeah okay cuz it's not intended to be in their back pocket yeah that's got to be what you were talking about there right yeah that's where that that's exactly the one two strikes on kosan first and third one out two nothing Tigers went to the slider now if you've thrown your good slider would you throw it again here I I I mean and that was another really good one and and it was well located you and you can probably get another chase out of it looks like they might go upstairs so remember that's the second throw to first Sometimes with the pause of Replay we've seen guys will forget about that you can't throw to first again if you do and you don't get him out it's a b yeah dellino immediately put up the two meaning the the second disengagement and he's leaning swinging a Miss he went fast ball or at least that's the way it came up but I don't know that that was a fast ball that's what the pitch tracker said but it's strike three I don't think that was watch this little cut to it yeah that's yeah that's I it probably came out like that because we've been talking about him trying to get yeah look at the dot in there that's not the forseen fast ball he's trying to throw it harder and he succeeded on that one the other one was 87 which was a lot harder that one up to 8 9 I think the speed yep fooled it that's a slider yeah absolutely it is acting like a cutter mhm McCoy Center Field Parker Meadows has it two stranded for the Padres two nothing Ola Tigers fans get ready to Fiesta at coer Park and the Tigers face the Orioles September 14th for our 19th annual Fiesta tce the first 15,000 fans 21 plus receive a tece soccer jersey presented by Miller Light for tickets go to tigers.com giveaways first pitch downstairs ball one nice Escape by ker Montero in the bottom of the second it was and just showed me a lot too just on that pickoff move with marrow and just how he was holding the ball and just talked about how relaxed and comfortable he is out there and showed that last inning so we checked during the break Zach zers and our Graphics team checked that was a slider and it was the fastest slider that montero's thrown by 2 m an hour all year and it kind of just Blended in the middle of the plate but it got the job done all it has to do is just be slightly off the Sinker and the four seam velocity just enough and then have just a little bit of a movement to it and that's that gets that swing and Miss I can hear Gibby at home saying do you want to know location or do you want to know speed he always says location doesn't he oh yeah yeah 3 go that's downstairs darish is all over the place so far it's a leadoff walk for the second straight inning and time now for our call Sam best call the Tigers this is not surprising Major League Baseball generally you hit a couple of home runs you're going to win tigers with two or more home runs this year are 18 and three you wouldn't mind if he hits another one no hey if we play the next January I got a chance at winning figer law pick this tick you just give me a little Runway give me a little ramp I'll get there wait till you get hot right yeah yeah you can keep you keep waiting you can keep waiting for that but I mean that's showing Riley a lot of I mean respect right there get falling behind 3 and0 and giving him a slider 3 and0 just trying to get back into the count but with a first hitter of the inning you're trying to really bear down and get that first hitter out and he didn't really come close 51 pitches deep into the outing for darish already and that is ball one a shocking Sinker to verling and here is Yuki Matsui getting loose in the Padre Bullpen already you mentioned they have four lefties Tom Cosgrove was optioned out there was five lefties when we got here there are some teams that have one Lefty in the bullpen the Padres have hoarded lefties Matsui Mor hon Peralta and Scott mat sui just 59 games into his major league career he's pitched very well this year and we'll see what kind of length they would need from him he is getting loose he is 28y old out of Yokohama in Japan that's low two balls in a strike and this has been a labor intensive night for you Darvish coming back and he's going back to that breaking ball just seems like he's got the most confidence in it see if he goes to another one Matt beerling destroyed that last fast ball he saw on the inside part of the plate one drops in a sweeper let's see if he just stays with either that sweeper or the slider yeah he did I mean when when you give up a home run on the fast ball earlier you remember that you you bet and and Matt verley that's why I'm sitting there guessing along with him and if you're m Ving you're saying I don't know if he's going to throw me another fast ball he did earlier in the count but it was on the outside corner to two up the middle second base Bart it's a Nifty play and they are going to not turn two that was close it's close over at first Xander Bogarts with shortstop range goes diving at that ball to get it to mcco man are you kidding me I mean darish was ducking to get out of the way what a stab by Bogarts and then just flips it with his glove leads McCoy to the bag and I mean Matt beerling hustling down the liner that would have been one heck of a double play Xander Bogarts was a slick short stop for so many years in Boston and that was an outstanding play at second base his new position and it takes a selfless act to decide that you're going to go ahead and move off your typical position and take over second base yeah no ego or anything like that just saying hey I'll do that for the better betterment of the team there he goes that's a great pitch for run on that's an easy stolen base just I a barrel for verling there that was just a huge jump I mean he was just like almost like a left-handed pitcher out there just like on first movement he's going and it was a breaking ball and the throw down there not even close that sweeper has been really effective for darish so far and that's the that's the thing it's just a little bit different than a slider has a little bit bigger movement to it from side to side not maybe too much in speed differential to the slider maybe a couple miles an hour slower but the slider goes a little bit more vertical that sweeper a little bit more horizontal there's another one for Carrie Carpenter just when he it just seems like Darvish right now is when he gets in a Groove with a pitch he just stays with it like he threw a bunch of Sliders in a row because he was able to land it now he's been throwing the sweeper a lot because he's been able to throw it for a lot of strikes two and two wave at a Miss he went slower there it's a curveball and it's strikeout number four for darish all right time for Home Depot's getting it done he has had an outstanding strikeout rate for his career he does have the most career strikeouts for any Japanese born pitcher in Major League Baseball had Deon Nomo who showed up on the scene with the Dodgers and was just phenomenal with that wind up of his the iconic look but U darish has been even better in the strikeout category in terms of volume this into right field is down for a base hit Colt Keith here comes verling and the Tigers have been equal opportunity offense tonight a run in each inning and just staying with those breaking balls that's that slider and it stays in the middle of the plate and good for Colt Keith too he struck out that first at bat and didn't get down on himself whatsoever found that pitch to hit and drove it into right field and I think it all started with that last at bat on Monday that he lined a pitch into left field that was just a good start for Colt Keith and now he's bringing it back into this game and drives in the Third Run for the Tigers darish is leaving in the third time to take a look at the r A's relief stats the Padre's Bullpen has a 13th best ER in Major League Baseball the Tigers Bullpen whatever you want to call a bullpen I mean you almost want to just say overall pitching staff whatever they are but the Tigers Bullpen generally has just been outstanding this year even though it's kind of a pitch to contact Bullpen yeah I I think they've been just tremendous and especially all that they've been asked to do over the last what month and a half with the opener and a lot of the openers have been Bullpen guys and then the bulk guy and it's been very impressive what they've been able to do here's Matsui who came over in the offseason he our Wallside Windows pitching change it was a 5-year contract this December to get him State Side Turbo Slider I mean you think about the prototypical left on right slider that's it and I think Spencer was looking for a fast ball right there thinking that oh okay you know he just came in missed with ball one I'm going to get a fast ball cuz that was a fast ball swing way out in front take a chance you know you want to0 take a big chance you're going to break out into Abba there 1-1 in the air right field side The Winner Takes it all you know yeah I was going to say that you know you've been to Stockholm recently did you go with the wings earlier this year I I didn't go they have an APPA Museum you know in Stockholm I thought maybe you visited I and I liked them yeah I I did see a perform not by ABA but but uh the the wonderful Detroit Symphony Orchestra did a presentation on they were fantastic really yes popped up back of second base I don't know that we thought we were going to learn that tonight about Dan Petri but you know what you just did take a chance time for the Menards Big Money encounter and when you talk about bat speed in Major League Baseball there's a spectrum here because the quickest bat speed does tend to create the most power but just because you have slow bat speed and a short swing length doesn't mean you're not a great hitter it's so spectral that on one side is the contact hitters and on another side is the power hitters and if you're in the middle you're either indecisive or you do both arise like you see there I just tries to WAND the ball sometimes so it's not a bad thing to have a slow bat when you're the type of hitter he is right I I think you know it's that batto ball skills that you hear so often that's what is a good example of that Chopper to second base that's sing at shortstop and there is the second ground ball out for Louisa rise statcast 3D is powered by Google Cloud here are his hits since August the 22nd and he has generally sprayed fast balls all over the place but he can hit anything and that's the thing look at how it's all over and some of them he's picking off the ground so it it's he's not going to swing and Miss very rarely although he did on a change up from Montero how about that swing on the fast ball from mono yeah first pitch strikes he's 10 for 11 so far and there's a second Pitch strike as well that was a serpentine slider again that came up fast ball yeah again but it's it's a slider and it's a harder slider so look at the break on that yeah and we'll explain why that's happening after a pitch generally stat cast classifies based on Spin and based on speed as compared to what the player has thrown before and so so if you are out of the realm of what has been possible over the course of the Season it will come up as something other than what it actually is so there that ball shocked to second base and Keith so what this means is why it's misclassifying is that Montero has adapted his pitch tonight to be something we haven't seen it to be in terms of velocity right and and they'll catch up and it's the same thing with his Sinker he started throwing his Sinker and it confused him everybody cuz they said wait a minute he doesn't throw a sinker and it takes about a week or two weeks of of throwing a pitch until they start reclassifying it or I got another way to do it you mentioned Mike petriello stat Caz Guru and his son Henry who's a huge baseball fan sometimes they just sit together and watch baseball games if Mike and Henry are watching this game it'll be reclassified tomorrow so you call out Mike's name and then you watch the magic happen because that's what if you're talking to the the pitching team for the Tigers it's like we don't want anybody to know cuz they'll catch up fast enough correct two strike Fly ball Straight Ahead Parker Meadows that's a one two three inning and that is perfect for Montero short inning give it right back to the offense welcome back inside Petco Park Tigers Up 3 nothing and we're at the home of Mr Padre himself the late and great Tony Gwyn who played all 20 seasons of his career with the San Diego Padres you know he's monumented himself forever inside Petco Park he retired in 2001 so most of this Tigers team weren't even born yet or maybe they were just toddlers at the time when he retired but it beged the question now since you didn't get to see him do his thing who's your favorite or best hitter you've ever seen and here are some of the answers that I got Miguel Cabrera Albert kuhol Barry Bonds and Derek Jeter heck of a list you guys yeah I look AJ hinch thank you natal for that AJ talks quite a bit about how like players that are in this Clubhouse are so young it's not like they've seen all the greats at all times and yeah you've pulled up some YouTube video of Tony Gwyn but you it's been a while since we lost Tony and he was just truly one of the great hitters of all time but that's why this game is so special and that's why we're so happy to have the internet because you can watch somebody like that and you can learn about one of the greats of all time not only in baseball by the way the first game here at Petco Park ever was a college baseball game between San Diego State and Houston San Diego State happens to be Tony gwyn's alma mater he is still the all-time assist leader in back basketball at San Diego State he was a phenomenal passer in college Matt sui just slipped off that splitter I mean it is amazing like you think about Bob Gibson right and and what he did on the mound but he also played basketball at kraton and Tony Gwyn was just a a a gem of a basketball player down the road here for the Aztecs who played Houston the opener here 20 years ago Fly ball left field side jxon profar is in pursuit to the line and he's going to run out of room and he nearly caught a steel chair for his troubles as well you don't see folding chairs like that very often they're generally in two places down the line at a baseball game and at a professional wrestling event where things are about to get really nasty coming over your back right that's right they fold him up and you hear the clang all the way to the Cow Palace is a security I mean there there you rarely see two people down the line at the same time sometimes the security guard is there to be the ballp person as well but there is ample security down the left field line or maybe their general admission seats 3-2 is low nice take by Chase young it's Ball Four all right time for Chevrolet's strongest player if you don't have YouTube in front of you we're going to bring you the video of Tony Gwyn swinging the bat and just finding gaps on infields is is in Montreal that ball went rolling for like 42 days because of that Turf but you know 3,000 plus hits seven times Silver Slugger believe that was the 3,000th in in Montreal it's the 20th anniversary today of his jersey retirement by the way no and a lot of people were trying to describe or give a comparable for Louis arise and and they said it's a lot like Tony Gwyn you know just gets up there surveys the field he can pull the ball uses the entire field drops it in the left hits the occasional home run Rod Karu like too right that's the guy that I kept saying was Rod Karu that he just used his hands in his wrists and just flicked at the ball I mean and just it it was amazing how hard he could hit it Tony Gwyn Jun Tony Gwyn also I mean just by how hard they can hit it and just by flicking their wrists and hands it's chested down we mentioned Tony Gwyn Jr who's in the radio booth next door I there was a cool moment when Tony was playing in triaa Tony Gwyn Jr it was Father's Day and he was part of a walk-off with triaa Syracuse I mean that is as poetic As It Gets in baseball you walk through the hallway here and you hear Tony Jr talk and you're like wait sounds like him yeah does it exactly and he's such a great guy and he and Jesse do a wonderful job on Padre's radio love coming here to talk to them and to Don orillo and Mark Grant there's Jesse by candlelight reading some stats great great to see those two one two in the air right field side tatis is back he's at the track this Ball's a long way and out of here here second home run in the career of Trey Sweeney and the tigers are hurting the Padres that's the second two strike home run tonight how about how did he get to this ball though he showed bunt at the beginning of his at bat and then gets a slider inside how does he get up to this thing look it where that is again much like Matt verling recognizes the pitch pulls his hands in in order to get the barrel to that but I mean that's not an easy pitch to hit either both these home runs are very unlikely pitches that the Tigers hitters have been able to get to somehow that's what they're saying how'd you get to that pitch I don't know but I I don't know but look how far I hit it 1 oh that's a rocket on the ground to third Manny Machado is superb over there yeah watch how calmly he just gets up and just flicks this ball over reads the label and just flips it over there let's see is this what does it say on there and then just sidearm flip over there and I would say and this isn't a category that gets measured in any way but I would say his understanding of what his arm is timing Tempo what he needs to put on a ball to get it across the diamond is one of the best in baseball and and you're describing that and I have a name since we're talking about Craig Nettles yep it's the same way he just you know he'd make you run all the way down the line and then just nip you you know like oh I got a chance on this one I'm going to get a bait NOP no you're not just get you he was with that 84 podr team MH yep oh2 on Meadows swinging a Miss strike three well look Kansas City did win tonight Minnesota lost Boston lost with a win the Tigers would be the first team out of the wild card when we were in Atlanta and Houston in June if I said to you hey Dan I got an idea I think on September the 4th the tigers are going to be the last team out of the Wild Card you would have said what to me I would I would probably would have said I hope so I hope you're right and and I think the more you think about it because there's still what they win this one they'll be two games over 500 Y and and and Major League Baseball was actually talking about there could be a wild card team that is not 500 so that's very possible that you're just a couple games over 500 and and can and can be in the playoffs yep just got to stack with and and and that was just what I was looking for is just boy just no worse than 500 coming in in Spring train no worse than 500 and now they're right there with a chance to climb even higher so when the Tigers left Atlanta the record was 34 and 40 6 under and that wasn't exactly the low point of the season but that was when the Tigers were struggling most you start to get a little bit healthy and you chip away and you chip away and you win the games you're supposed to and then suddenly oh boy Riley wasn't exactly thinking about the Wild Card prospects when he went deep into his vocabulary well there inning over Trey Sweeney do you know yet how he got to that ball he and Keith B reg Guard we're talking about it though we're going to find out tomorrow that's for sure here's our xinity highspeed pitch and it's that Sinker from ker Montero gets a nice ground ball right in the hands of Fernando tatis Jr gets a popup from Manny Machado same thing running it on the hands and then also got a flyball to get him out of the jam in the second inning that was from McCoy to Center this is from Machado to Center and quick outs Galore from Montero I mean if you could ask AJ hinch right now if we just walked up to him and said hey here's a headset one question what do you think of montero's outing he would say quick outs is great news and and he he described that in in when he was talking to all of us before the game what are you looking for from ker Montero San Diego Padre's folks were asking okay what should we look for and it's okay first pitch strikes and a lot of strikes it's just repeatable delivery you know where he can repeat his delivery get in the same arm slot and he's not spraying the ball all over the place he's right around the strike zone he's thrown the slider harder and then came up with that Sinker that we just showed you so one going left extremely hard one going right extremely hard there is a strike on a curveball that's good news as well Ronin would have thought it was low and so do quite a few sand diegans one two outside two and two look the league was hitting 364 against that curve ball coming in as Wy Peralta gets loose or stands around but he's going to get loose at some point but K there really tried to get some extra on that last pitch 97 don't need to throw it through a wall though those last two it it looked like this is the first time that he's kind of sped up his delivery trying to get that little bit extra instead of just repeat that delivery and that nice smooth delivery and it won't affect your velocity on the ground off Montero kicking Joy third and that's going to be a base hit cronenworth is two for two he says I'm all right don't nobody worry about me yeah it was another broken B and he was much calmer in that delivery came back through a nice strike it got in on Cronin worth that was only 67 off the bat just perfectly placed as Montero was kind of falling off to the left hand side kind of Spun backwards and not in that Fielding position in order to to glove that and throw him out one-on-one out here isander Bogarts who will hit a ground ball he's above League average in that category for his career you see the arm sleeve there that is the color of the Aruban flag so Ander Bogarts when the Scout came to visit him and this is a story you may have heard at some point but Scout came to visit him and his native Aruba he had 102° fever and chicken poxs and he somehow made it to the field to get noticed and all that's turned into is a decade of a Major League career yeah didn't he have to talk his mom into you know just please let me go his brother was going to go oh yeah they were there to see his brother and then he was like look I want to do this thing too and you know the Red Sox are pretty happy and so are the Padres 3 0 that's in there three and one on bards Chopper Third Base side and foul 3 and two you mentioned we were talking about Cura earlier a Aruba it's part of the island chain of the ABC islands as they call it Aruba Bonair and Curel so they're basically sister Islands the what's it been to two of them Ru andan not Bon Air not not Bon a yet do it I will okay three and two that's outside and low it's Ball Four let's see if let's see if ch feder comes out and talk okay Dylan dingler is going to go out but Chris feder yeah they're going to they're going to come out right now to put a stop to this just to slow him down a little bit and I think also to make sure that he watches the first pitch here to Jackson Merill too be very careful where you put this first pitch so Jackson Merrill's three for four in this series he's swung a very hot bat basically throughout his time in Major League Baseball so to your point the first pitch swing number is substantial can you get him to chase if you throw a quality non strike on the first pitch yeah and and that's and I think that's the whole thing about Montero is he throws a lot of first pitch strikes but that doesn't necess necessarily have to be a forseen fastball right down the middle and probably shouldn't be right right he can go to a slider he can go spin a curveball for strike one high in the a deep left field off a fast ball and Merill does exactly what the Scout says yeah they were wanting to be careful but watch where this pitch is that's middle middle to a guy that is going to swing at a first pitch recognizes it's a fast ball an inside outset that's an impressive young hitter right here just using those hands flipping those wrists hitting it out to left Center the snap on that swing for Jackson Merill who just set a new Padres rookie record he breaks the tie with the former catcher Bonito Santiago and runs driven in to Short Stop Sweeney out number two we both in that break looked at each other and said like I don't know if five nothing feels all that comfortable yet and the Padres are too good of an offense to believe that they are toast at any point especially in this ballp part you can just look at body language and you can look at the body language of another team and and and tell if they're a little bit down and you could just see the way Manny Machado out there defensively makes a play and is laughing and looks like he's just playing softball on a Sunday or something they've done it before this Padre's team has done it before at least the core of it has they were not a playoff team last year they were two over they went to the NLCS 2 years ago and the postseason as well in 2020 and look Manny Machado to your point about demeanor some people said early in his career like hey he's lack of days ago whatever he's cool yes he's calm and he knows what he is adding stress in a baseball season is never a good idea and and everybody reads it too yeah I would defend Manny machado's temperament to the hilt because you need that in a Dugout yeah if the rest of the team is looking at them and like hey you know we're okay we're going to come back we can come back and that's part of the reason last year they didn't win remember they they had that horrible record in in Extra Inning games it's outside and and now they're coming back they feel they can come back they're winning games against bull pins late in the game broken bat ground ball first base side Tolson on the move for the final out of the inning home run for Merill makes this a different ball game time now for a Comerica Bank game summary it's Matt beerling day so far this is a two- strike swing on a fast B gave the Tigers the lead and that person a souvenir then he decides to run and get one of the best jumps you'll ever see he probably would have been sent back in the Olympics and then he ends up scoring on this base hit from Cole ke so two runs in for verling and the two-run lead right now for the Tigers who face a new pitcher for the San Diego Padres that wandy peralto one of four left-handers out of the bullpen 33-year-old out of the Dominican fires a strike and just was reinstated from the 15-day is on Sunday relies heavily on his change up and also that Sinker that he just threw right there that Sinker averages around 95 just as he hit for the second time also will throw a slider and mix in the for seamer he had one of America's hottest injuries you don't you know the last couple years you hear a lot about the abductor yeah the sort of oblique area oh Quick Pitch ground ball right back to him he smacks it downward and then makes the play he looked like he was like taking a pass from a labero in volleyball yeah just kind of surprised him almost message from figer law right now figer law all we do is win all we do is win good timeout by Carrie Carpenter we love car's timeouts that's perfect which gives us an opportunity to watch the volleyball Spike you ever play that game with the velcro on the circular discs yeah and you catch the ball and you kind of like have to slap down on it that's what that looked like to me do you have any idea what I'm talking about I I do because it's uh it it's a similar similar thing that we play out on the boat in the water we stand in the water and flip the ball and catch it and boom yeah there you go don't let Summer don't let Summer slip away it's a ground ball foul I'm imagining you going home and talking to py on the boat and going hey py don't let Summer slip away good good boy that's right we're going to play that game with the velcro and that's right stick one on your paw yeah right awesome we should you know what we should get velcro for pause the mascot and play catch with pause there you go and then you know with one hand throw it back and then pause would do this again you could just put just on Paw Paw you could yeah you blew it on there pa paw right just throw it and boom yeah love that check swing we're just the idea people the execution is on others and no go is Alex tosy one and two on Carpenter swing and a miss strike three there's that change out you talked about and the first punch out for Peralta yeah this one almost looks like it's turned over watch how it Dives inside and goes straight down to carry Carpenter yeah that's that really good that's going to be a good real good pitch on a right-handed hitter too just where they pronate another Quick Pitch yeah yeah his Tempo is all over the map right now and he's fast he's just getting right back up there getting the signing going not wasting any time how selective can Colt Keith be left on left that's a nice take two balls and a strike couple of sinkers on the inside part of the plate not even phased Colt Keith nicely done I mean he waited out a couple of pitches to get something that he liked and you know if there was one thing that could get better over the past week and a half for Colt it was Pitch selection and and the other thing is just he went through a rough stretch there I think it was 0 for 18 and he was starting to you could see it you know wearing on him a little bit and it doesn't take much it just takes one little hit like he got on Monday and now he's just right back in there didn't let his first at bat bother him and's got two hits in his last two at bats you can see with the way he has leveled out when the seases have been choppy why the Tigers why Scott Harris and Jeff Greenberg and everybody thought you know what let's make sure sure he's secure and he doesn't have to worry about his future in the off seon with the way this season started and the quote unquote slump you're talking not really a slump but like a little bit of a cooling off period if that happened and he wasn't secure in his future who knows where this season would have ended up yeah and and but I think that's that's why if you look back why they had the faith and the confidence to sign them to that deal because they knew how mentally strong he was and he could handle going through something like that to start his career without it affecting him and that's why they didn't send him down because they say you know what he can handle this we know he can high in the air right field side and this is arching foul yeah it's it's a little bit of the which came first the chicken or the egg do you give him the contract because of that or is the contract effective because he can do that sort of thing and whatever it is you see the rookie hit leaderboard and he's all over it and and maybe both maybe a little both of those reasons just low wow good take that's a daring take yeah cuz I I kept looking for dellino to raise that right arm just for a timeout I solemnly swear that this is a timeout and that last pitch was lost three and two and to throw to first Dan Bolino an attorney by day and an Umpire By Night a Crystal Lake Illinois three and two that is strike three it's a really nice Sinker buzzing inside the Padres will have the bat rack next that g no it's a 5-3 ball game here in San Diego those three runs for the Padres thanks to Jackson Merrill who's an NL front runner for Rookie of the Year well I caught up with Colt Keith earlier today to talk about just what it's going to be like tonight and this entire series squaring off against one of the other best rookies in this league and he said you know the thing that impresses me most about Jackson Merrill is he repeats his swing the same every time unlike me I feel like I'm always changing mine yeah it's interesting and you it's perfect timing Natalie because Louis arise is a guy who can hit the ball wherever he needs to but you were saying absolutely and Colt added you know something that I want to do is have the same swing every day I want to learn from Jackson throughout this series and start to find that consistency in my own game so it's nice that one rookie can try and kind of lean on another one and take some things from from him yeah you hear that a lot at the allstar game Dan where like guys will watch somebody but then when you get close up you're like I I just want to know what that looks like and what maybe could work for me just a little tweak here and there no I and and that's the nice thing about they can chat a little bit too you know just and watch them take batting practice and ask him just okay what do you concentrate on T te rips that fair Third Base side and that goes ricocheting around into that deep corner and they'll take second and third with nobody out that was a harsh smoke shot it's that slider that just kind of spun right in the middle of the plate and you can just kind of feel it right now that they're starting to feel a little bit more comfortable third time through the lineup kir was able to dodge some some early action from the Padres and just now they're just starting to see him get a little bit used to what he has Dylan dingler going out just to talk maybe give that Bullpen just a little bit of time this place is up for grabs right now as Gunther gets loose third time through for Montero has an Ops of 1041 for his very young Major League career jxon profile flinches but takes ball one right now Montero is looking for answers Dan where do you think they exist you know what especially on this left-handed hitter he's got to probably lean on that slider and four seam fast ball he's not going to he doesn't have that Sinker like he does to the right-handers to get out of trouble with that he's been able to do so far in this game so it's going to be that offspeed stuff and then trying to climb the ladder with that four seam fast ball 1-1 high in the air short left field Sweeney is out he says it's his now he's called off by Riley green who makes the catch that was chany for a moment there's one away oh kind of died in the San Diego night yeah Riley stayed nice and calm and and did call off Trey Sweeny but he did he just try swen he had it and then just calls him up but he stayed nice and calm look at him just nice and calm nice and calm and and then sees it and then just reacts and changes his Direction and makes the out Tigers right now will play the infield back with Manny Machado and his laser likee b first pitch fouled away strike one so at this point you're playing to maintain the lead yeah you'll give up the one run and to make it five to four it's just if you bring that infield in and there's a little ground ball somewhere that get sneaks through with a little popup it also affects your Outfield defense right if you want to play deep in the Outfield and you bring the infield in there is just you an expand a lot of room a lot of room now Montero has not been a king of swing and miss so far he's got two strikeouts tonight he's 0 and2 on Machado Fly ball right field and foul again he went back to the slider he's thrown him two of three pitches so far yeah that one just he's having good swings at these pitches and just and and everything is hard it's hard it's and you know you get that timing I just like to see him he can waste a pitch doesn't have to throw this for a strike 02 once again so the question is depending on what happens here would AJ hinch go to Gunther against Cronin WTH next you know and and right now I mean you're yeah you'd love to try to get him through five but you're trying to win the game too yeah you basically cut Cronin worth in half going left on left in terms of his power and his ability to hurt you yeah and and again you you'd love to see him go through but do you want to leave him in taking a chance with Cronin worth two for two yeah you know two two pitch coming Machado sprays it through left side base hit where Tony Gwyn in this city used to make a lot of money we're tied at five now he went to the change up and it's not a bad pitch it's out over the plate and you see Machado go out there and just kind of hook that ball into the hole didn't go with it just got that Barrel around it and gets it right into the into the hole and he knows that Montero is just upset knowing that the ball game is tied and it's a brand new game Gunther will come in to try and quiet this for San Diego tied at five in the fifth every Sunday is Chevy Sunday Kids Day kids 14 and under can enjoy pregame autographs and face painters on The Concourse free rides on the high-u Carousel and postgame kids run the bases for tickets go to tigers.com tickets if you could have gotten Machado you'd have an advantage Lefty Lefty on cronenworth as Gunther comes in our Wallside Windows pitching change has him at six and 2/3 with just one earned run he's trying to neutralize cronenworth who was two for two against Montero two and0 it would have been lovely to get Machado because this is what happens to cronenworth when you go left or right with him yeah especially to lead off an inning too but now you're two and0 you give away a little bit of that Advantage as that is a called strike Bo brisy in the bullpen once again W the Avis standing watch 2-1 Ronin where lines it wow boy how about some of these approaches too look at that approach by cronenworth just going right with that we've seen a number of the Padres doing that just kind of going and giving taking advantage of whatever the pitcher is given you that ball out over the plate just slashes it the other way Jackson Merill inside outing one going with it to left center for the Home Run Manny Machado just hooking a change up some really good approaches by these hitters a lot of different types of swings in this padr quarter yeah two and two Fades outside it's three balls two strikes on cronenworth the michigander facing Gunther three and two High Fly ball really high fly ball a lot of time for Keith to get there in medium right he makes the catch and there are two away want to say Manny Machado caught a ball way out there a couple of years ago like way down that right field line on a popup that's similar to that for some reason that's registering in my mind that in that same vicinity yeah like like totally ridiculous place to catch a ball B down the line like that here's Zander Barts want to say it was against the Dodgers now we're playing hashtag is that true oh he's against the Rangers Steve our statused has told me was against the Texas Rangers yeah it's half true you both have good memories his better than mine pretty clearly two balls at a strike with an arm sleeve the color of the Pacific Ocean Xander Bogarts on 2-1 three balls at a strike Jackson Merrill's not been great against left-handers he's on deck I don't know you want to mess around with him the way he's swinging it right now I was just going to say I don't know how comfortable you feel with him in the box at all I don't care left on left or not we're going to see bogard's just Javelin his bat out of there about the way Gunther was going after him he looked like okay he's a lot more comfortable in going after Jackson Merill this is the fourth inning and this changed the game yeah it did and that just shocked both of us too just that it was the first pitch and it was right down the middle like that and that one just fired everybody up back fired Jackson Merill up fired that whole Padre Dugout up and that's why we're in a 55 tie watching that swing it didn't really strike me at first who it looked like lefties don't really have that opposite field power as you see the splits here it looked a little like otani's trajectory on an opposite field home I was Wonder to what you were going to say cuz I was trying to think and and you're right the way he kind of on that back leg that stiff back leg no I think that's a good good analogy you don't Lefty power like that does not look like that other than Otani for me wow it's close two and one no I that's that's really good cuz I was trying to think back to some hitters you know from the past and who they reminded me of and as soon as you said that I went oh yeah that's exactly who that looks like you could say Jim Tomy but like his was a little more Majestic this was like the snap yeah that's his more like the big lift yeah he's 21 two balls two strikes second base Keith takes care of his fellow rookie and the inning is over but the Padres have tied the game we got a game get ready for an exciting week of baseball at Comerica Park join us September 10th through the 12th tigers and the Rockies for tickets go to tigers.com tickets Tigers trying to bank some wins Chris feder with a long conversation for kader Montero to say like hey we like some of this right the it's still a tie ball game as Andy Ian will bad and Adrien is out of the bullpen for the Padres th those talks that Chris better was just giving ker Montero go a long long way because you're you're you're down you know you're you're winning five to nothing and when you exit that game it's it's it's tied and you didn't get through five innings and he's done it 11 straight times coming into today's game so you're you're really really disappointed you're down you really don't want to hear anything from anybody and and Chris feder knows exactly how to get to him and say all the right things and it it it does it consoles you it helps you get you're still angry you're still very disappointed but it helps you kind of deal with it a little bit better so it doesn't eat you up a win would go a long way as well and the offense trying to get this lead back Ian is hitting for young it's interesting the Padres have one Lefty remaining Tanner Scott they have five right-handers available that is just wide of the bag at third and a very nice play by the ball lady down the line one and two nice play you said nice play too she said thank you there's strike three what Aon has out number one this looks like that split finger came out and just caught India Bonz by surprise but boy I just the the confidence in these so Peralta come in and just take no time morone just doing the same thing just come in and just grabbing that ball and just filled with confidence and I guess why not as good as this Bullpen has been you got a 291 ER throws a sinker that sits around 98 there's the for seamer strike one to Sweeney who homered last time you can't hit that in no and and it's just how big and loopy that pitch is then you lean out over the plate thinking that you're going to get another one and he buzzes you with a sinker they nearly dotted him with a slider yep what a ball game this has been and it we're just kind of right before intermission it feels like who knows what's next three and two you have to figure this is a fast ball right if he can't land the breaking ball I if he missed with the other one that's why I just you know I I I just think they start leaning out we've talked about Riley green and their approach a lot of the left-handers approach just be prepar to prepare to die and leave lean out over the plate and get that Sinker in like that one exactly that that's the pitch you're talking about but a couple pitches before that one you know if you take a swing at one uncomfortable as Trey Sweeny did and you know you're reading that and you're saying oh okay you know I can either go to that or bust him with that Sinker because you have to guard against it he went for seamer and when it has been right at the edge of this atad he has gone to the fast ball the last two times does he now mix in a slider and he's got to throw it for a strike you don't have to make that Perfect Pitch with it at that's exactly the one and that's the one yeah that's more of a get me over it still is on the outer third though but it's not on that just black part of the plate right on that outside corner that's that where you start hitting the thirds oh rang the doorbell but nobody home one out walk that's good at bat by Trey Sweeny after that one pitch looking at it and thinking that oh yeah I'm going to I'm going to put him away and he just fought back kept fighting back and ends up working that walk here's dingler with two ground balls to his name so far and that's called ball one It generally generally not every pitch but generally this has been a hitter's plate so far tonight I would say more strikes have been called balls than balls have been called strikes yeah I'd say right on that right on the border lines that's a strike one and one on dingler dingler had that RBI ground out and then Manny Machado made a good play on him so a couple of good at bats from Dylan dingler here see if he can build off of those first two at bats and hit another ball hard one1 inside two and one we have all this offense in this game and Shota imaga and the Cubs have thrown a no hitter the Giants just had their first hit of the ball game in San Francisco in the seventh inning with Zach Gallen out and Kevin gingle in two and one on dingler flyball right field Fernando tatis Jr two out for Parker Meadows spot and he will hit for himself four remaining on the bench for AJ hinch mckinstry from the left side Rogers Malloy and kler and we saw AJ 's Justin Henry Malloy against Tanner Scott two days ago in the series opener that's a strike of 98 that's off the glove of campusano and it will be an extra base for Trey Sweeney I mean that just clanged like the trolley of song and and still a nice job though by Trey Sweeny just as soon as he sees that pop out of the glove it's all about getting that secondary lead and not being automat a atically going back to first he just kind of stopped and then was able to see that ball away and move to second base Parker his willpower just would not hang on it's one and two that's not a backhand for campasano that he's going to want to have no that's a little uncomfortable and exactly why it bounds bound it away Padre's got a run the other day after a play like that and that nearly went whistling into center field mcoy and Sweeney just went into Greco Roman grappling position one two swing and a miss off a slider home six don't let Summers slip away no don't every Tuesday is a 313 value game lower level tickets start at $19 plus get $3 hot dogs $1 chips and $3 water of Fountain drinks go to tigers.com 313 for tickets how is this thing going to end tonight we'll find out our Wallside Windows pitching change Bo brisy and and the Padres will go pinch hit with peralte Andy bz in the game of third as expected with him pinch hitting for young this is going to be a very interesting mix and match final couple of innings by Mike schil and AJ hinch yeah this is exactly why and and you were brought it up on Monday just about how equal the bullpen and the benches are for the Padres and the and the Tigers just how they can do the perfect mixing and matching and the Padres can get those good matchups and they're taking advantage of it right here two is down it's three balls no strikes Bo last pitched on Sunday where he made his seventh start thre an inning in a third and they were they were score did walk a couple and did have a strikeout outside ball four so here is McCoy the Padres just as an update have four remaining on the bench three righties and a lefty the Tigers have a couple of lefties in the bullpen but the question is how many are available and it's a bunch of right-handers still here's McCoy who lays down a bun first base side TLS sweeps it up has to wait a second and Keith reaches back held the bag out number one boy this is one of those plays Spencer had to he was going to come up and flip and C Keith just having a a long way to go and then just flat footed throws it over there able to hang on and keep his toe on the bag boy that had that had disaster written all over it now arise strike one it is amazing how sure arise is that he'll be okay if he's down one strike and you don't see that many sacrifice buns and I think you're thinking if you're Mike schil you see that and because you know this guy's coming to the plate and if you got the go-ahead run on second base with Louisa rise at the plate that's why you are not afraid to give up an out because he's not an extra base hit machine he is a singles machine there you go yeah you know he'll he'll hit a gap or he'll hit one down the lines but yeah he's just trying to get base hits and if you want if you want your hitter in there this is the guy that you want up there with the go-ahead run and scoring position for that reason but the runner fell Peralta fell down he was trying to avoid the ball so he's still at second base perala got toppled like the Leaning Tower of Pisa looks like it's going to be watch him here he's like Neo in The Matrix but less de less dep but that's exactly it yep he just wanted to make sure that he did not get doubled off Merl's like dude man yeah let's let's see here now man how about a double play ball here tati drills this into right center and it's CAU CAU by Meadows Peralta to third he does dust himself off and get the 90 ft he is so angry at himself that he didn't at least get to third that would have been a run one way or the other wow this feels like a playoff now it does now now you got to wiggle it wiggle yourself out of this if you're Bo brisky I mean you got to you know you walk the leadoff hitter you got a Lisa rise base hit you get a break there now you got two outs now bury him and you got another really good hitter and jerks and profar at the plate deep to right field for profile toward the pole it goes and this ball is foul not by much and from this angle I couldn't tell but yeah my goodness got a change up on the inside and just a little bit out in front risky a glance over at first and arise 1-1 profar takes two and one he walked back in the first against Montero Manny Machado is next he's the reason this game is tied well you wonder if that change up just you know B he can't be afraid to go back to that pitch just keep it on that outside part of the plate there goes a rise and it's fouled away two and two if the tigers are going to make something of this September and create just that little seed of doubt in every other American League wild card team this is the kind of moment we're going to see all month and it's it's such great experience on learning how to win these games outside there will be no throw through just in case Peralta got frisky at third and and and good for Bo brisky to go back to that change up he was trying to be very careful with it and didn't make it real competitive pitch but you can't be scared away from it just because somebody pulls it foul three and two to proar inside B is loaded for Manny Machado Here Comes Chris feder to have a conversation yeah and I think this too this is a nice visit because of just how stressful this inning has been and after that long at bat where he finally walks proar just to get him a chance to settle down and catch his breath but let's see this one's work out better for Chris feder and the Tigers just that last one he went out when he talked right before the Jackson Merill home run this is more a just okay come on get yourself together give yourself a breather and just going over exactly how they're going to attack him of his 336 career home runs Manny Machado has 12 Grand Slams that's the most of anybody this place was dubbed slam Diego a couple of years ago by Don orillo the great play-by-play announcer for the Padres in part because of what Manny Machado has done base is loaded two out Machado takes ball one he had two of them in the 2020 pandemic season Machado did his last one was three years ago in September line drive right field and that is caught beerling puts it away we are still tied somehow back inside Petco Park here's tonight's FanDuel sports book same game parlay here's our three legs Jace Young got his hit Matt beerling he's got four total bases so he hit his already Riley green still needs a run to complete the parlay and I'll have a chance here guys five5 tie right now let's see what the boys can string together let us see Natalie thank you very much Bo brisy maneuvered his way out of major trouble and so the tigers are tied at five Riley green is the batter and yet another left-hander has Walts out of the San Diego Bullpen and for that reason o he going to get Riley green and Carrie Carpenter last pitched on Monday and is scoreless in 13 of his 16 appearances for San Diego came over from the Marlins with Brian hoing as that is inside one ball one strike Kyle higashioka is the new catcher they have three on the roster so there's still one more move to be made if Mike Schult wanted to the former Cardinal Skipper as it's one and one that's a strike one and two on Riley green who's walked and struck out and popped out so far tonight here's another interesting note that Scott has appeared in 22 straight team wins between Miami and San Diego let's put a stop to that streak right here that would be mighty nice there are some guys who are just magnets for good games they want to protect the lead they call on this guy and in a tie game like this you want to protect that tie and give your chance a team to come back and take the lead and that's why you get a a streak let 22 straight wins ground ball out the jam shot he was worried about the bag and eventually cronenworth does get the out now he wanted to rush that ball so it didn't hit the bag at first and then he kind of got boxed in yeah yeah that's a tricky play he's thinking yep I got to get right there and he's probably thinking about which in which angle is that ball going to go if it hits the bag and he's hurrying in there to try to get it thinking about okay do I go back to the bag do I tag him which way do I go and he was able to get back to the back but held his glove out there in case Riley green ran into it it looked like almost had a third option there too it looked like for half a second he thought about putting his glove down on the bag but that is very dangerous and then he just laid it out to tag the runner that was oncoming here's one of those at bats you were talking about in figer law pick the stick for verling right it's a left-hander in to deal with the whole parade of lefties and verling gets the left right and this is just the perfect and that's why he sandwiched in between Riley green and Carri carpent that's exactly what AJ is doing right here thinking you're going to bring your Lefty in to face my guys I'm going to sandwich a really good hitter in between and he lines this to right field off the dive tatis is not able to clear it without the Hop however he kept it from being a triple somehow somehow is right I mean but he Dove and he just watches eyes on this ball and he just traps that thing knows that he's going to get that short hop wow that's amazing it is it is that looks like it was going to stay under but he almost knew exactly where that ball was going to hop up put his glove right in that area and it went right in strike one vacuumed in by higashioka that's an exceptional play that he almost put himself in real danger with yes cuz you don't need that SL no no you you're you're going you you know that you're not going to be able to come up with that but somehow was able to get that glove and keep it from getting behind him Carri Carpenter takes a swing here and hits it high in the air right center field it's a long way to go but it's playable for a tto for rounde number two if you're wondering why not hit for Carin first that contact but second the Padres are out of lefties so it's going to be a right-hander from now on and yeah if you lose him right now you lose him for the rest of the game and Extra Innings should it go into Extra Innings yeah that's it and Andy ianz is already in the game has already hit for Jace Young and maybe part of the hope for Ian being in is that you would dissuade Mike Schult from let Tanner Scott go through that at that when Ian shows up again that would depend on situation more than anything if it gets down to Andy aan if he even yeah and he's got to get through this inning to be able to get down there if Co Keith can somehow extend this inning to get Spencer Tolson up one ball one strike Colt is two for three you've liked the swings so far tonight I I did I I I liked what I saw in that final at bat on Monday 1-1 fouled away rip back to the screen one and two little selft talk Tanner Scott takes a tour of the mound briefly verling at first would be the lead run in the ball game one and two there goes Matt it's a Fly ball left field side profar is over Machado on the run and he's going to run out of room he thought he had it for a moment yeah that just kept slicing away and Manny Machado just wisely slides so he doesn't keep running into the and flip into the stand those kids over there just wanted a high five they came running to the edge here just to say hello Manny Manny Manny Manny that's awesome it's so cool it's what you dream of as a kid and a baseball player both in that moment and it's and it's too bad it couldn't go hey time out I got a there's a pitch timer kids maybe three years ago I'll sign one two check swing and a ball low two and two on Keith kids are a little bit like the Tigers in the Wild Card race you know just trying to get everybody's attention ball flying under the radar like Hey we're here too can we make this real two and two swing it a Miss strike three tough pitch tough pitcher with a real tough pitch coming up the figer law seventh inning stretch suit up with mlbshop.com check out the largest selection of official jerseys caps t-shirts Collectibles and more gear up with the tigers and mlbshop.com high intensity night here in San Diego and Shelby Miller is on for Bo brisy who left of the basees loaded in the sixth inning he got the final out now Shelby Miller will face a lefty a righty and a lefty Jake cronenworth is two for three first pitch golfed foul Shelby last pitched on Friday where he had that scoreless outing streak snapped at nine games so this is a good time to get that one back keep throwing that ball as well as he had been throwing it up until that game that was the Extra Inning games against the Boston Red Sox it's tip foul and this is a foul ball if that touched cronenworth on the way by out of the batter box he would have been out instead it rippled foul but to your point about Shelby Miller and his succcess we mentioned herder and Holton not necessarily available today but Shelby Miller is like having an extra Lefty in the bullpen yeah he's been he's got that riding fast ball back and he's thrown some really good sliders I know that's been a pitch of contention a little bit but he's got the good split finger but has mixed in some sliders just when you least expect them two strikes cronenworth a little half swing flare foul and that's that's the pitch right there that you were talking about where he's so successful against the left-handed hitters see where that pitch ended up how late cronenworth was on that it was just at the top of the strike zone and had that little bit giddy up to it where it just jumps through the strike zone to those left-handed hitters and there is strike three on a fast ball there's one away and now a message from MGM Grand Detroit go Grand at the destination that elevates every experience it's a good time for a grand time at MGM Grand Detroit Natalie Kerwin downstairs Dan Petri Jason benetti Tigers trying to pick up a game on a couple of teams in the wild card here tonight at Petco Park tied at five the Padre's have the last five runs in the ball game and there's ball one on a slider to Xander Bogarts who's walked twice yeah that is that slider I just was talking about and throwing that to the right-handed hitters and just overcooked it a little bit just held on to it a little bit making sure that he makes the perfect pitch with it nice catch by dingler one and one Jason Adam getting loose in the bullpen the former Tampa Bay Ray whose stuff looked really good on Monday another strike clipping the outside corner or vicinity well I mean both of them are you got one strike you might as well go back out there and he did it's got to be a strike cuz the previous one-1 was Xander Barts with something of an eye roll how about a slider like the first one off the plate splitter two and two tried to go down down and away from him was something other than that fast ball disguised as a fast ball but just was not tempting enough for Xander Bogart two and two from Miller fouled away spoiled to the right side Padres are looking for win number 80 closing in on their win total from last last year they were 82 and 80 in Bob Melvin's final season and what they thought was a disappointing season for San Diego without a playoff run like they had in 22 check swing three and two boy that's a good pitch and a good take and look at the command from Shelby Miller every pitch that he's thrown has been pretty much exactly where he's wanted it to and if not he was just off the plate with him 3-2 is high another check swing in the third walk tonight for Xander bulard so here comes Jackson Merill who in the fourth inning reminded us of somebody who's one of the greats in Major League Baseball watch this Otani Merill Oppo power it's pretty similar yeah it it is the it's it's the lower body I was watching the setup's a little bit different but that lower body the strength in their legs of how they lift that ball Merill left center field Meadows On The Run that's down and thankfully it's over the wall that will keep the game tied it would have been 6 to5 but that is such a similar swing for Jackson Merrill on his third hit tonight but this is the thing how do you pitch to him I mean Shelby Miller goes to the split finger and it's the same swing as the home r run where he gets it this isn't on the outside part of the plate that's inside and he just cuts across it inside outs it and pushes it tailing away from from uh Meadows out in Center in center field just kept tailing into left Center and luckily for the Tigers bounces over the fence Mike SCH out of the Dugout talking to Dan bino and it looks like they are going to go ahead and hit for higashioka Donovan salano who started the game at first base yesterday has grabbed a bat he is a veteran presence in this lineup who made his debut in the majors 12 years ago he's 36 years old trying to get back to the postseason and there's a foul ball for a strike he was with the twins last year he had 10 postseason at bats he was 0 for8 for the Giants in 2021 in their postseason but salano in a huge spot a postseason field to this it back solano's one for three in his career against Shelby Miller infield in here with the game tied the Padres left the Bases Loaded in the sixth they stranded two on in the fifth can the Tigers abandon a couple more here in the seventh swing and a miss great splitter fantastic splitter started on the outside part of the plate dove into the inside part look at the movement the tail on that pitch and that just bottom drops out out of it if you are going to have a swing and Miss right here is the time this is the time and you could go back to that or the high fast ball fast ball away fouled off where would you go now if you're Shelby know I thought I thought he was going to he probably meant to go up there and just got it down but just with that late swing you know and again you're ahead so you don't if you want to go back to that splitter you don't have to throw a strike with it just trust Dylan dingler to block it it's a slider it's two balls two strikes yeah that one just hasn't he just hasn't quite caught it yet so three of them I think now none of them for strikes just off that outside part of the plate two and two tipped foul that's the one the splitter yep it and if if that that pitch is just maybe 6 in lower just slight lightly one ball maybe lower he's going to swing right over the top of it it was just high enough that he could clip the top of it and foul it off see Shelby just shook him off to throw this two two it's a fast ball down and away three and two he's yanked a couple of fast balls here Dan and I saying you you know you've got a base open also and the nine hitter McCoy next right so you can you you can you don't have to just give in you don't need to give in make a good pitch deep breath at a 3-2 he didn't give in it's 12 four and now there's a double play in order seventh walk tonight for the Padres Chris feder out of the Dugout to talk about McCoy who has all of 46 trips to the plate in his major league career when's the last time you talk about playoff atmosphere in a big ball game an important ball game and a chance for the Tigers to pick up ground when's the last time Chris feder you've seen him make three trips in a game I can't remember the last time that'll tell you how much and how strategic everything is at this during this game McCoy in very short time has been a big time ground ball hitter now remember he bunted in the sixth I was thinking the same thing along with you but you've got a force play that's to me it's different I I love like a safety squeeze I I I do but when you have the bases loaded there it's it's easier on those Corners to get it and flip it home just with that Force play instead of having to make a tag swing and a miss a good slider that's that one that he's been successful with as as of late that's if he picked a perfect time to find the strike zone with it infield hunkers down out on ball one one ball one strike you have to be really ready and decisive on the infield right now yeah and I mean you're standing out there and you're saying exactly that what am I going to do if it's it where am I going two and one now if you're McCoy you got you got to be hunting a fast ball see if Shelby Miller throws something different he was he didn't two and two and got it right by him at that top of that Strike Zone 22 on the ground Third Base side Ian home to get out number two and now Guess Who's Coming to Dinner it is one of the best batsman in all of Major League Baseball he's a contact hitter through and through at his core Luis arise is built for this situation and and he's he doesn't walk he doesn't strike out and he doesn't walk Bas is loaded game on the line arise takes ball one he's he's taken every pitch that way tonight the first pitch of the at bat and this is the first time he's been one0 just just like you know like I am not swinging at this Miller That's foul one ball one strike boy look at how confident and and is's just strutting around after that foul ball doing that little walk around the plate that's a confident hitter three-time Allstar three straight years Louis arise takes ball two double barreled action in the bullpen the game is Right Here Right Now lifted foul 2 and two he is one of the best hitters with two strikes in all of Major League Baseball at 280 coming in two and two here he sees a lot of fast balls he does damage against just about everything but that splitter I I I know this is where it's so tough if you going to stay with that fast ball up or do you try to get him to swing over the top of a splitter left side and foul look out Alex toy the third base umpire nearly got peppered and that's why he's so good look at him just flip the flip the batad at that ball just realizes right at the last Split Second I need to swing at this and is able to get and long almost line that for down the line for a double but I mean that's what makes him so good we talked about Rod Karu that's the way they did they used their hands they use their wrists and flip the barrel of the bat right at the ball at the last Split Second once they identify the pitch two and two on the ground up the middle toward the bag Sweeny pros and got him how big was that ground rule double from Jackson Merill that bounced over the fence somehow this game is still tied at five the Padres have stranded The Brady Bunch and then some Alice and Oliver too they've left 11 so far tonight we go to the eighth inning and Jason Adam is out of the bullpen yet another Padre reliever with an erra with a two in front as elas Diaz makes his first appearance as a Padre's catcher and good good news for Mike schil we mentioned it earlier it gives him an extra move Off the Bench to have a third catcher on the roster with the rosters expanding on September the 1st and be able to get those matchups exactly the way he wants it can Jason Adam Miss with a breaking ball inside to Spencer Tolson and create a home run to give the Tigers the lead we'll find out ball one and Adam's been scoreless in 14 of his 15 appearances for San Diego so he's another one that's come over and done a really nice job coming out of that Bullpen for the padr slider one and one that's a good one too and over those appearances he's three and0 with four holds a 060 ER opponent's hitting just 170 since he's been in a padre uniform had the Tampa Bay Ray put together the season they wanted he would have likely still been pitching for that team Razer one under the Padres are 18 over and Adams pitch is a Dandy just a ruthless slider that's two of them he's thrown to Spencer torlon Miss with a couple of fast balls up let's see if he just stays with that Jason Adam who made his major league debut against the Tigers six years ago gets a swing of a Miss off that slider he did not miss with any of them that he fashion Tolson no those three are just about unhitable and if you're Spencer Tolson it's like you know what what am I going to do with these things you know if he's going to throw these I I'm just not going to be able to hit him he's not if he hangs him I got a chance but those three it's pretty tough so here is ianz who struck out Lefty righty his first time up that's low he wanted to take a practice swing just in case and that can be a little dicey you don't want to do that just after the ball came just in case 1-1 now that's the kind of pitch that Andy could do something with right on right yeah that's not the one that he threw three of them to Spencer torlon that was something that you might be able to handle 1-1 check swing a TI two and one k kzy said no a hush has fallen over this crowd which was enlivened the last couple of Padre Innings that's the slider and it's like you know what's coming and what are you going to do he shook twice I was going to say yeah clipped on the ground foul he shook to the slider Dan yeah you you think yeah he's not going to shake no no to the fast ball no to the slider I'm going to throw a change up he's not doing that you know he's not it might be fast ball in no fast ball away no slider yes 22 again for Ian on the ground right at third Manny Machado patrolling over there and he slings it for out number two now a message from FanDuel sports book new FanDuel customers can get $200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet just download the FanDuel Sportsbook app today Natalie Kerwin downstairs Dan Petri Jason benetti feels like a playoff game here in San Diego and it's something that tiger fans I know have been hungry for for years and who's going to be the hero tonight as Sweeney takes ball one outside and this when he flips over to the left hand and instead of all the sliders he pretty much stays for seamer and change up to the left-handed hitters and that was that change up on that first pitch to trace weeny there's another one ball one strike you see that one's just almost the difference of the slider going yep exactly Chris Crossing they come out of the hand looking the same the slider goes away from the right-hander that change up goes away from the left-hander so Sweeny rips it center field Merill is back though it's a one two three inning there have not been many of those tonight still tied at five still at the edge of all of our seats last three Innings eight stranded for the San Diego Padres Peralta trying to get back to the bag make sure he doesn't get doubled off or hit by the ball ends up on the ground he does not score on the Fly ball and how frustrated he was pulling into third he just just could not hide it and then Jackson Merill that ground rule double you just talked about Dan save the day for the Tigers it didn't they've been able to wiggle out of these jams and you'll look back on that and just say man if if tigers go on to win this will vest going to come in and just try to keep that score right where it is give the Tigers another chance Fernando tatis Jr just tried to change the scoreboard our Wallside Windows pitching change is will vest who's been Dynamic out of the pen this year he sure has and just through a inning and 2/3 of perfect Innings on Sunday against Boston and and right now just is throwing the ball so well and it's that combination of that four seam fast ball and that Sinker opportune times to throw Sliders in the change up but he's just been blowing people away at the top of the strike zone both with that Sinker and the four seam swing and a miss oh man man that slider had fangs yeah look at this is what you want to do on an 02 pitch that's where you throw that that comes out of the hand looking like okay that's a fast ball in the outside part of the plate look at that right and then just bites just drops right down and away unhittable one down jxon profar a big swing in strike one that's just the fourth strike C tonight to seven walks for the Padres who typically are not this patient they're 24th in walk raate in all of Major League Baseball but they've waited out the Tigers for quite a bit of this evening as a 0 and two on proar and you just watch will vest too and just his body language and he's getting it we were talking about some of the Padre relievers early in the ball game he's just getting that ball he's right back up on that mound that's how confident he is gets that sign goes right into his stretch and then boom there's Suarez the closer ready to pitch the ninth in a tie ball game as the Padres are running out of relievers which nobody thought would be possible when we started this game oh will vest don't do it to him that's six pitches to two strikeouts and we talked about the opportune when he misses mixes in the slider and the change up he mixed in the slider to the right-handed hitter tatis Jr goes back to that chain CH up after getting ahead with the fast balls and the change up to the left-hander and let's see if it can do three pitches another strike out for the third out of the inning would love an Immaculate inning that would be a Capper tonight first pitch call a strike proud revolts it's too humid they're a little testy 01 inside ball one of the inning well that's a good pitch though I know you want because it's it's that sink that's what's made him so successful that tailing Sinker in off the plate look at Dylan dingler going outside and comes right back just missed but the I the velocity on these things that's 98 on the outside but that previous pitch boring in on his hands he's got to respect that and then come right back with 98 just missed 2-1 didn't get the corner again it was close again three and one you don't have to feed him here no 3-1 Machado taking all the way well he got one on the inside part of the plate too well if you had confidence I I think he'll throw a fast fast ball but if he had confidence in that slider I think he'd swing and Miss 32 coming fou away it was a fast ball yep I just you know just in talking to will vest recently about that and how he mixes up those the Sinker and the and the for seamer and how they work off of one another I just know how much confidence he has in that fast ball just because of how good he's throwing it on the ground off the slider back to the Mount and that Boomerang means a onew three inning for will best awesome stuff to the ninth we go top of the ninth inning on Monday we saw Robert Suarez who got a double play at an opportune time to help close the game out and he has been one of the best relievers one of the best closers in all a Major League Baseball 31 saves trying to keep it at 5 yeah picked up that 31st on Monday and throws that for seamer at 99 average throws that change up will mix an occasional Sinker but it's pretty much that for seam and that change up Zach mckinstry is going to pinch hit for Dylan dingler here the one Lefty remaining so that's two for the price of one of the moves here and AJ hinch has the opportunity because he has yet to use Jake Rogers tonight so loading up on lefties against Suarez it'll be three three in a row mckinstry Off the Bench to try to start an inning to change this ball game conversation from Diaz Padres have now used six relievers in this game the next one will tie a season High they've used seven earlier this year Suarez to mckinstry and a fast ball fouled away at 98 which is the temperate fast ball for Suarez took a little bit off yep just trying to get ahead he is 75% for seam fast ball there's another one nothing in two and then he mixes in a sinker as well so it's like 8 and 1 half out of 10 pitches are fast balls from Suarez but they are Moody and they are and then you get all sped up and then he drops a change up in there it is at night9 2 and left-handers are hitting just 156 do have three home runs though popped up short left profar makes the catch well look we saw jav bayz home against Andre Muno so the ungettable relievers have been gotten at points as Jason Foley Tunes up for a ninth inning that'll include cronenworth Bogarts and Jackson Merill we' like to have first base open when Jackson say and you want a one-run lead too mhm Parker Meadows first pitch ball one how do you deal with the Express and the local like that right and and that's the thing you get into hey I'm going to see a fast ball here it's one and0 I'm going to go early I'm going to go early and catch it out in front and he drops the change up in that's below the Zone it's two and one and then just when you think okay that was the change up I'm going to see 80% fast balls from here on out he throws you another one I got to believe he'll go back to the fast ball here have to imagine so staying away from Meadows and he tips the scales of triple digits now you knew that was coming at some point I don't know that we saw 100 the other night but you knew it was coming two two outside and high three and two the focus is on tonight however the Padres top three relievers have gone three of the last four days now so if you can get this game tonight A Series win you're in good shape bu pen wise three and two to Meadows and he vaults it high in the ear straight away two down KY Green with two out and the base is empty looking for his first hit this year against 98 plus and what a time it would be to square up a fast ball and Riley does have that good opposite field power too he can lift and he can go out the other way change up first now the 1 oh a second change up it's the same pattern as Parker Meadows falling behind one and0 think you're going to get a fast ball and he drops that change up in again let's see if he just the same pattern goes right back to that fast ball well you walk into the Batters box and you think you're going to see Jerry Lee Lewis great Balls of Fire and you end up with Sam Cook A change is going to come but I mean that pitch right there the 1-1 it was identical to the one he threw to Parker Meadows Up and Away at a 100 same pattern spikes a change up two and two Riley green has some big swings this year here it started with that huge home run in Tampa near home for him on the Left Coast tonight late night two and two to Green outside and high three and two we are the last game in Major League Baseball Tonight Matt verling started this with a home run what seems like three days ago Riley takes ball four and the inning continues for verling now he's faced three left-handed hitters in a row and now he's going to see that right-hander you know let's see if he gets that one of those inside fast balls he's been used to throwing that fast ball Up and Away Up and Away to the lefties first one he righted the ship there at 100 tiptoeing the inside corner on that inside corner just I was just thinking about Matt beerley maybe wanting that pitch maybe that just shocked him a little bit wanted to get a good feel for how fast it's coming in ah strike again three figures one more time yeah one on the inside corner one on the outside corner a swell of San diegans on two strikes on the ground to short stop it rolls to McCoy and Bard stops the bag to retire the side the Tigers need three outs from Jason Foley perspectively next Keats thank you as per normal Jason Foley will wait for a right-hander it looks like cronenworth will bat first will vest still on the mound there is strike one the question is do you deploy Foley for Xander Bogarts if you do you could also walk Jackson Merill yeah that's that's what it is it's it's Jackson Merill they're pitching around him targeting him it's a strike o and two here's what best has done and that's why he remains in the ball game o and two to cronenworth the michigander that's downstairs a ball in two strikes Jake Rogers catching now with dingler pinch hit for by mckinstry let go the ground swell of let's go Padres grows here the former closer for the Wolverines Jake cronenworth on Two and two it's h foul left side he's been on both sides of duel like this cronenworth in his career possible two-way player in Major League Baseball he's turned into a hitter through and through trying to make it sting against the Tigers 22 it's fouled away he's seen everything saying just what is he going to get that fast ball at the top of the zone oh he's going to get a change up that sinks his ship one down boy he came back after throwing a slider the previous pitch comes right back with that change up and we're talking about Suarez change up how about this one from will vest look at this come out of his hand and how it Dives right down and to the right and Cronin worth was trying to time that fast ball and just perfectly placed ball one to Bogarts if you can get this thing to the 10th inning it'll be Carpenter and Keith guaranteed against a right-handed pitcher Padres are out of lefties yep that's why they started early and we were saying eventually they're going to have to bring in the right-handers look at that Sinker boring in two down you know what that was oh that was just right in on the hands and just that's what makes it so good he came right back out right back in there look at that just eating up those hands the previous pitch was one of those sinkers on the inside part of the plate come right back in there with another one you don't have to give a cookie to Jackson Merill here yeah I he's he's hit everything today ball one I know you don't want to put the winning run on base but you also don't want the winning run to score with one swing no and and he's and he goes to those change UPS they saying you know you're not you know not real comfortable with throwing that fast ball eventually he's going to but he's not afraid to throw the slider either to the left-hander Fly ball left field Riley green makes the catch this game deserves bonus baseball and that's what we get absolutely Ely tied at five top of the 10th inning Carrie Carpenter looming runner at second base Matt verling nobody scored in this game since the fifth and Jeremiah Estrada who is Shelby Miller esque in that he has reverse splits righties have been better against him than left-handers he's fast ball heavy and he's the opposition Dan yeah and he's got a strikeout per n inning ratio of 14.55 that Trails only Mason Miller we know how hard he throws of the Oakland A's and Estrada throws he's a little bit slower than Suarez averages right around 97 mph and will mix in a split finger along with the slider Padre's last year were 2 and 12 in Extra Innings this year they're seven and one you want Randomness in baseball there you go this is one of the reasons why they're confident even when they get down for that reason right there they're the best Extra Inning team in major league baseball first one here is in for a strike so knowing all that about the strikeout rate of Estrada how do you attack him I mean I just it it Carrie Carpenter and I know they don't like to do this but I mean you just want to try to pull the ball verling at second the lead run Carpenter sprays it foul nothing in two and it's going to be difficult when that 97 mph fast ball you see Carri Carpenter laid on it just figure out a way somehow to get Matt verling over to Third Base get him over get him in no two swinging a Miss up high with a fast ball one gone yeah Carri Carpenter just little bit tantalizing he does can do damage on that pitch not that high G likes him just maybe a little bit above the belt that one was about shoulder high and when he's throwing that hard very difficult to lay off Colt Keith now first his pitch fluttering High you don't want to split her up there I was going to say just bring that down about a foot and see if Cole Keith can get something out of that out over that plate and shoot it in the left field just ran the outside rail one and one just look like he's just taking that pitch just sizing it up just getting a field for how much velocity what it's doing does it hop a little bit at the end get another one in that same zone line it in the left ground ball first base side cronenworth has to fight it but he wins the battle they are two away with beerling at third no he went with the slider too and Cole Keith on that inner part of the plate we've seen him Hammer those pitches just need a big two out hit here from from torque it was a slider Festival in the eighth inning for Tor against Jason Adam yeah I don't think that at least the strata's first slider there didn't look the same as Adam those were just filthy Matt beerling at third 1 oh it's upstairs a slider two balls no strikes the secondary stuff has not been Cris no and that's where if you're Spencer Tolson now at 2 and0 you got to be looking and just saying it's got to be right here right where I'm dreaming no oh boy that has not been a strike all night no dorks asking too that's a tough one too you get that strike and it's not a pitch that you want to swing at 2-1 inside would have been Ball Four let's hope it's a 3-1 Miss and we're all glad that torque is still in the batter's box yes and it goes a long way I want to hear one of those ones like he did the other day where he screams woo does he have it against Estrada three and one coming big swing big swing out over the plate got to be looking for it again try to catch up to it that one looked like he might have been a little bit late on you're going to have to start that a little bit early catch it out in front 32 to torque and side ball for the inning continues Justin Henry Malloy will pinch hit again we saw him come in in the eth inning in a huge spot two days ago that was against Tanner Scott now here against Jeremiah Estrada Ruben nebla the pitching coach out of the Dugout for the Padres Justin Henry Malloy who's at bats have been sparing since coming back with a chance to make his mark on this 2024 tiger season you think this is because he shown the patience to seek out a good pitch Estrada does have really good stuff but we just saw him spray the ball a little bit to Spencer Tolson so he's saying okay you know I'm going to trust that Justin Henry Malloy is going to go up there have the patience that he's known to have seeking out a really good pitch that he can hopefully do some damage and get Matt verling in he's been more aggressive in the big leagues on first pitches and he was right there that he's laying in the weeds a little bit and he has been but that is a wonderful first pitch from Estrada and it it it's an okay pitch for him to swing at too you know that's the thing he still knows that okay I'm going to be selective to a point but if if you're going to give me something I'm going to I'm going to swing at it up that pitch was as high as Shamu used to get out of the water here one and one inside two and one it's got to be exactly what you said Dan wait him out and see if you can win the war of attrition exactly you know and then if you get Trey Sweeny up there just again you got the right on left matchup 2-1 drops in a paratrooper of a slider yeah that's the best one he's thrown two and two Estrada to Malloy center field Jackson Merrill is underneath we will go to the home tenth and we're still locked up five beens maybe yeah maybe still tied at five it was a 5 nothing lead for the Tigers three in the fourth for the Padre's two in the fifth for San Diego and nobody scored since then here at Petco Park and Jason Foley is our Wallside Windows pitching change trying to keep Jackson Merrill at second base where he opens the 10th inning and Jason Foley last pitched on in the game on Monday and he threw a scoreless inning he's going to have to try to do his best right here after the Tigers could not come up with a run in their half of the top of the 10th inning so now his first trip to the plate as a San Diego Padre he was released by the Rockies a couple of weeks ago in mid August elas Diaz in his first trip to the plate as a San Diego Padre trying to win the ball game here at Petco Park on the ground right to kler who's just checked in at third and he has out number one that's a good start he watch Ryan kler right before that pitch was thrown had himself angled to watch to see if the barrel the bat to see if there was any indication of a bunt but also has to keep an eye on Jackson Marl at second base thinking that maybe he might be wanting to steal third then as soon as that pitch is thrown checks the runner Mak sure he goes back to Second makes that easy throw over there Lots going on with Ryan kler on that last pitch for the first out of the inning there's a big time ground ball hitter McCoy very early in his major league career he's got 10 total hits for his career he's hit the ball on the ground three times tonight and Foley loves a good ground ball Louisa rise is next and there is hoing who would be the second to last reliever available for the Padres tonight 1-1 swing and a miss a burrowing Sinker one and two yeah it's got to look so good coming out of the hand and ends up almost in the dirt think you get a little bit over anxious thinking okay I just got to come up with a base hit got that extra Runner out there at second base you get a little bit over anxious clicked foul one two strike three called a slider after seeing all those sinkers just froze them thinking that's going to be a sinker on the inside part of the plate it's start starts over there and just kind of backs up and catches that inside part of the plate for strike three and the Tigers aren't even going to mess around with Lis arise no it's an intentional walk two on two out Fernando tatis Jor is the batter and this is where the game lives with a gentleman who 44,000 came to see yesterday in his first game back off the iil inside ball one he gave him the SoDo now next is jxon profar if you want this inning to end if you're AJ hinch with a right-hander it's got to be now you also set up that force force at any Base by that walking aise left side and through base hit Tim leaper waves around Merill and fittingly Jackson Merrill scores the winning run of a Ray's comeback that really hurts no what a game and it's just you knew that eventually that fando tatis was going to welcome himself back in a big way for the Padres and man that's just a demoralizing defeat but you know what I mean you know that the Tigers will come back AJ hinch will have them all fired up to win this game tomorrow what an atmosphere and this is not moral Victory Speed but this game this moment these Sensations in this ballpark are why you start in February you want to be involved in games that create tension and a chance to make your name for yourself in the postseason didn't go the Tigers way tonight Padres win but this is what it feels like and you find out okay what do we have to do differently in order to win that game you go back and analyze it and say boy with a hit here a hit there something different in the course of that game what didn't we do in order to win that game 65 the final score peaches what a game Padre's had a little too much really good game on Monday really good game tonight expect nothing different tomorrow we say farewell from Petco Park for our entire wonderful crew for Jason diar producer Michael odino our director for Natalie Kerwin Dan Petri I'm Jason benetti now we send it to John keing at the fer law desk for tigers live post game Keats take it away oh
