ktrs sports with Martin kcoy presented by offenberg Hyundai and triad [Applause] [Music] Bay 821 big 550 K here as Martin kilcoin Sports director to the world joins us good morning Martin kilcoin mcra hold not hope got your wild card tickets in your back pocket we'll get to that in a second but I want some I want some facts first can you explain to me Jordan Walker the guy comes up and he's sent back down it seems like Oliver maral and mo aren't on the same page it's all very confusing so for four months maybe longer he's in Memphis they made it very clear he's got a lot to work on so we finally accept that he's going to be in Memphis working on things starts to do a little better has about a nine 10 game stretch where he's showing some power and they call him up last Monday and Cincinnati Matt Carpenter goes on the injured list we're like okay give the kid a chance young guy bring him up he's in the starting line of the opening night the next night he sits even though he had great numbers four for seven against the red starter hunter green and they don't start him and Ali explained he said he's going to be hitting only primarily against left-handed pitching that's what we need help with which is true they do need help with that and everyone points out his career numbers are the opposite he's better against right-handed then left-handed that didn't seem to make a lot of sense it's a topic that I can tell you personally Ally was worn out with by the weekend we got into a lively debate about it and the thing I pointed out to him off camera I said this is not consistent with what John mzac told us and he said when and I said at the trade deadline sitting right where you're sitting he said if Walker comes up here he needs to play so it made no sense from the the get-go they set him back down yesterday after a limited one week experience just sort of strange and maleic repeated I cringe is what maleic said I cringe when I see a young player just sitting on the bench so people can say there's no disconnect I don't think there's any other way to read it the front office has an idea about what you do with a young prize Prospect I get maral saying hey we're trying to win I'm going to look at every match if I can and figure out the best way to go out that night and win but I do think on occasion they overthink it he's a young guy he's having a little bit of success at Memphis he is a first run pick that is different than a guy who's a fourth or fifth run pick ultimately I know you're just trying to win so I I don't quite get what they're thinking is and I am concerned that that it's happening again I'm sorry Dylan Carlson leaves he may not turn into an All-Star player in Tampa but he's having some early success a Ros Arena dois Garcia these guys even Tyler O'Neal is having a nice year nobody was crying when some of these players left but why is it that they do better when they leave and Walker is starting to look like he might be on that same pass I don't understand I agree with you that the first round draft pick is different than a 20th round draft pick who you can sort of treat differently and bring him up and bring him down and bring him back and bring you know I I get that but when you have such a Ferrari like a Jordan Walker you need to treat him with a little I mean you don't want to mess it up mentally right I mean this is mentally down back and forth they called me up they're jerking me around put him in the lineup if he's not hitting lefties or righties let him see what's going on I'm with you I get it they're trying to win games um but let them out there let them fail let them learn and get some Reps for the next year or so I I it's a very difficult um spot last night's game and I I I just I think it's in light of the fact that these other players have left and done better and fact that Carlson highly touted first round pick didn't really work out Nolan Gorman highly touted first round pick is sort of regressing in a big way this year I mean he should be in Memphis guy's one of the league leaders in strikeouts and if I'm Jordan Walker seems like a pleasant young man I think I'd be wondering well how come he didn't get sent down I mean I I think it's a little inconsistent yeah and um again this whole Lefty righty thing I if they're all about analytics and he's hitting right righties better than lefties why isn't he hitting righties why isn't he playing against righties and only playing against lefties if you're all about analytics organization and a manager that talks stats and numbers all the time and then turn your back on stats and numbers that's the part that I I just I I think you just have to be consistent with I get it I totally believe Allie's trying to win he's doing what he thinks gives them the best chance to win on any given night I understand that I get that I just think with Walker I just I think that it almost like a mind game going on right now I just I don't know where that kid's head is at and he's got to get his swing right I understand that but I think if you lose him mentally that's an issue well you would also think that when you called them up they had a conversation that said look the guy's going to play I'm with Mo you don't want the guy sitting I'm with Mo if we're going to call him up are you GNA play him because if you're not going to play him I'm not calling him up so it seems like somebody missed a memo somewhere well and and to me and I said this to Brendan last night it reminds me a little bit of the Wilson trus conundrum a year ago when after signing for 85 million a month into the season yeah he's not going to be catching for a while we'll just give him a little break he's you know he's just not going to catch he'll uh he'll play The Outfield and well said what Wilson contras your Molina Replacements playing The Outfield and after Ali said that a couple of days later John maleik said he's not playing The Outfield so we said O Okay so I this is to me this is not this is not something new uh last night's game tough for uh Paul goldshmid uh to walk Lars Newar to get to him he Strikes Out say what you want man but it looks like the man stood up and answered all the questions after the game like a real man yeah no he's a real Pro I think there's no doubt and listen I understand there's you know guys making millions and people are like too bad you're paid to hit they're still human beings and you can tell it's just eating them alive he's a proud guy two years ago he's the MVP and he said listen more times than not I have not come through kind of like tonight even when the poor guy had a walk-off home run earlier this summer his postgame comment was yeah most times I haven't come through so I'm glad I did I think he's really taken it hard and I do feel for him because he's a true Pro he's a quiet guy not vocal we know that but um it had to be a little bit I think at the moment a little surprising maybe they w large Nar they load the bases it also sets up a double play it's not just that they want to go after gold schmi because they know he's struggling it's set up a double play situation so that's why it made sense for the Brewers but you you just think about just the Optics what you're walking new to get to Goldman a former MVP he strikes out then Gorman comes up and he strikes out and you can even argue maybe a hit for Gorman there because he's almost become an automatic out so you you had two chances all all night with runners in scoring position they were the last two at bats of the game and both of those were strikeouts so there are three games under 500 they're 11 and 18 since the allstar break and there's a lot of numbers I just think being 12 games behind First Place Milwaukee to me is the most stunning number the Brewers lost their manager they lost their Ace Corbin Burns they traded him Yelich is out for the season Brandon Woodruff didn't pitch all year Devin Williams the star are just returned somehow they're 12 games better than you I just I can't fathom that so uh it looks like that Cardinal season is slipping through their fingers there's no question about it here here's Mike oh mcra hold on August 21st I got mcgraa said I got him to say it it might it might might be uh uh the fat lady as we're talking to Ben yesterday the fat lady's parking the car somewhere um so a great visual which they should call Dr Joe um all right so uh here's my here's my current beef with uh these Cardinal haters they keep referencing back in the good old days with Tony larusa and back Tony larusa would I lived through the Tony larusa years he was despised he was hated he was maligned what is this guy doing so there's sort of a revisionist history with some of these people comparing this current crop of management to larussa's are when everybody hated larusa yeah it's true I wish we could go back and maybe it's phone calls letters to the editor people know what those are where we go back and find volume of work that was criticizing larusa even people like me what are you doing Tony why would you do that there was a ton of critique it felt like even from day one that people just they just didn't think he was their guy he wasn't Whitey he didn't go fishing he drank wine instead of beer he's from California there was just sort of this initial push back that took a long time for folks to sort of get over and it really was after that summer in o02 when Daryl Kyle died Jack bucket died where I think Tony kind of got humanized to people at home he was crying in the Dugout with Joe bucket Wrigley and I just think I think people saw him differently and that team rallied and made it to the NLCS so he he eventually won the war but you're right there was a lot of early battles and people complained perspective is is is a inter thing because in 2016 2017 2018 there was this stat even though the Cardinals missed the playoffs they kept mentioning well we were in it till the final weekend we didn't get eliminated till the second to last game of the season we didn't get eliminated till the final game of the season and at the time I thought well it doesn't get you anything and now I miss those days there you go uh Martin kilcoin who is uh anything on the show we should pay attention to the next couple days uh we're going to talk to Jason Mt tonight the former Cardinal closer speaking of the good old days winning world series but uh Jason's an interesting guy he's been coaching high school college baseball down in Memphis he also comes back every year he must really love cornhole because he has his big charity tournament every year comes back remember he uh was really big and striking out cancer that became a whole movement throughout baseball he continues to fund raise for that so Jason Mt on the kilcoin conversation coming your way tonight at 6 o'clock to you by offenberg Hyundai the original Hyundai dealer they've been around since 1989
