hin El Chapo Guzman started his second Prison Break on the evening of July 11th 2015 by rising from his bed moving behind the shower curtain separating his cell and sliding down through a hole in the floor this solidified his reputation as one of Mexico's most ambitious drug lords the caloa Kingpin was extradited to the us on Thursday just hours before President Barack Obama's term came to an end the extradition almost certainly signals the end of decades at the of Mexico's Narco hierarchy an Ascent that left the world a wash in Drugs Mexico drenched in Blood and Guzman almost without rival he was recaptured 6 months later in January 2016 this is the story of the rise and fall of hin elchapo Guzman perhaps modern history's biggest drug kingpin Guzman was raised in poverty and born in the harsh Highlands of caloa State in northwest Mexico in the late 1950s as a teenage boy he joined his uncle and trans IED into the Contraband business after spending his formative years hauling and selling oranges when Guzman was in his mid- teens the only possible job route according to him was the drug trade Guzman had plenty of contacts to get started believing that the drug trade was the sole viable source of income his uncle Pedro AES Perez is regarded as a key figure in the first generation of Infamous caloa drug smugglers who not only helped usher in the current ERA of drug trafficking in the 19 60s but also made significant use of airplanes a strategy Guzman would later adopt Guzman benefited from his contacts with sinaloan criminals but his timing may have also accelerated his rise the Caribbean trafficking routes were being heavily targeted by us officials so Colombian drug lords had to keep thinking of new ideas the guadalahara cartel which controlled the majority of drug trafficking in Mexico during the 1980s was led by Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo however a crucial Choice made in 1985 would open Guzman's road to the top of the Narco food chain Enrique Kiki kamarina a DEA agent was abducted tortured and executed by guadalahara Cartel members as a result of pressure from US President George HW Bush on the Mexican Government Gallardo was eventually imprisoned in 1989 following gallardo's arrest Guzman and Ismael ELO zambada both of whom were gallardo's seasoned lieutenants took charge of the caloa cartel Narco tunnels which Guzman introduced in 1989 when he took over the caloa cartel's activities may be regarded as one of his most substantial contributions to the drug trade the caloa cartel's leadership provided the impetus for constructing tunnels leading into the United States Guzman moved so much cocaine via the AUA Prieta Douglas tunnel that locals in Colombia reportedly began referring to him as El Rapido or the Speedy one however the dissolution of the guadalahara cartel did not remain peaceful for long because man's party soon engaged in brutal battles for control of the drug trafficking plazas or territories in Mexico in the middle of 1993 the arano Felix organization afo attempted to kill Guzman at guadalahara airport but Cardinal Juan Jesus posadas OKO the second highest official in the Roman Catholic Church of Mexico was killed in the process Guzman fled to Guatemala after posad Us's death but he was quickly apprehended and sent to Mexico where he was held at the Puente Grande prison in Guzman's absence the afo which used bribes to get its members out of jail thrived however Guzman didn't actually toil away in jail through his attorneys he was able to communicate with his allies and ensure his comfortable and luxurious stay in prison Guzman broke out of prison in 2001 as authorities were arranging for his extradition most likely with the assistance of caloa cartel members who held high positions within Mexico's prison system he may have been transported out in a laundry basket or released by tried officials after that Guzman continued to be on the Run hiding out in the mountains of the states of caloa and Durango as well as a small piece of Chihuahua which together formed the Golden Triangle a region with extensive drug cultivation that is mostly under the control of the caloa cartel he reportedly had a sophisticated security system that protected him for most of the 2000s following Guzman's breakout fighting with the afo resumed and over the course of the following 10 years members of the AR Dono Felix Clan were either killed or captured however Guzman's disputes did not only involve the afo the blood alliance was formed with the Sinaloa cartel in the early 2000s the Zetas the Beltran Lea organization blo which was founded by brothers who grew up in the same neighborhood as Guzman and were members of the guadalahara cartel served as enforcers whenever trouble brewed on Guzman's behalf the blo also infiltrated the military and government establishments of Mexico the blo accused the Sinaloa cartel of betraying them after the 2008 arrest of a beltron Lea brother and the subsequent release of Guzman's son from prison which caused the once close allies to break up into rival factions despite having a partnership with the Zetas the Warfare eventually wore down the blo and all the family brothers were either murdered or taken prisoner Guzman has a reputation for shrewd commercial Maneuvers and abstaining from violence although his repeated Wars contradict that image he has a vast network of bribery corruption and double dealing in addition to his violence with its decades long crackdowns consolidating power into what would eventually become Guzman's organization Mexico's center-right institutional revolutionary party PRI which ruled the country essentially as a one-party state from the 1930s until 2000 had been accused of complicity in the drug trade with pan president Vicente Fox and Filipe Calderon conducting multiple offensives against caloa arrivals the conservative National Action Party pan has also been accused of siding with the caloa cartel soon after taking office Calderon sent out Mexican troops to combat the rising drug rated violence they were initially stationed in Misha aan in Southwest Mexico but soon spread out across the entire nation greatly contributing to the Bloodshed that has since racked the nation the Mexican security system has also been heavily penetrated by Guzman's cronies the blo allegedly employed multiple senior investigators from Mexico's Federal investigative agency and paid the nation's drug Zar $450,000 a month while still affiliated with caloa although there are no known connections between the DEA and the caloa cartel experts have stated that interaction with traffickers wouldn't be out of the ordinary in an anti-drug campaign furthermore any connections to the DEA might not have been as significant as sinaloa's ties to Mexico despite Guzman's unquestionably substantial political connections none appeared to have been sufficient to guarant guarantee his freedom indefinitely Mexican Marines surrounded the caloa Kingpin in February 2014 at an oceanfront condo in Mazatlan a city in Southwest siloa state after one close call after 13 years on the lamb Guzman's arrest came as a shock leading some analysts to speculate that President Enrique Pano a member of the PRI who was elected in 2012 saw Guzman's capture as a political necessity Guzman who was then detained at the altiplano prison in central Mexico gained considerable notoriety from the Mexican federal government all through the extraditan process started the Attorney General at the time stated that Guzman wouldn't be sent to the United States until after serving his sentence in Mexico or 300 to 400 years the leader of the caloa cartel had no desire to wait around on a July evening in 2015 Guzman slipped through the hole in the Floor of his cell's shower carrying out an escape plan that was likely started soon after his arrest and that apparently involved Engineers trained in Germany the plan may have even relied on equipment smuggled into the kingpin's cell Guzman then rode a motorcycle made specifically for use in the tunnel for a mile to a partially finished house where he was transported in a van to an airport north of Mexico City before being taken to a hideout in the Durango mountains a major Manhunt quickly started Guzman was free despite allegations that Mexican Naval helicopters shot up homes in Western caloa forcing hundreds to flee just a few months after making a brief trip to Tijuana for maale enhancement surgery he reportedly spent Christmas with his family and rang in the new year with an alleged lover on January 8th Mexican Marines invaded a residence in Los Mochis a city outside of caloa territory in Northwest caloa estate putting an end to his flight through sewer tunnels he escaped The Raid quickly stole a car for a getaway but was later located by police who pulled over the car and detained him at a sketchy Motel ending the drug Lord's chances of making another getaway after being recaptured Guzman was sent back to altiplano and his legal team filed numerous motions to prevent the extradition process that the Mexican Government appeared determined to complete this effort by his legal team as we all know did not pay off on July 19th 2019 Guzman arrived at the administrative maximum us Penitentiary adx located in Florence he was sentenced to life plus 30 years in prison the drug Lord's incarceration at the nation's highest security prison nicknamed the Alcatraz of the has brought new attention to the prison that critics consider an incubator for mental illness although the federal prison is considered Escape prooof officials worry about Guzman being able to smuggle drugs into the facility mental health professionals note that his track record would push officials to place him in solitary confinement as much as possible Guzman's current wife also got involved criticizing the way he was treated in jail to the media his two escapes still Loom large though numerous officials and cops were detained in connection with the Breakout after his Escape in July the rot was so pervasive that it was probably impossible to eradicate in the short months between his jailbreak and rearrest many view this story as not only the downfall of an individual but also the unveiling of a rotten system what do you think is this
