hi everyone I'm Lindsay riser in for Vladimir DTA we're watching news happening around the US and around the world we're going to bring everything to you live including these top stories some estimates say tonight's debate could have a larger audience than some Super Bowls will break down the stakes for each campaign in this make or break test on the road to election day Francine is churning in the Gulf of Mexico and could make landfall in the US as a hurricane we're tracking the storm and the preparation from Texas to Louisiana and worth the wait SpaceX successfully launches Polaris into orbit with the first all civilian space walk next up for the mission this is CBS News [Music] 247 we are just hours away from the first and potentially only presidential debate between vice president kamla Harris and former president Donald Trump the candidates will take the stage in Philadelphia tonight as a recent CBS News poll shows a neck and neck race in at least three Battleground States joining me now with analysis is CBS News Chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa Bob how pivotal is tonight for both camps it's great to be with you I'm here in the spin room in Philadelphia this is a Battleground state but the entire country is paying attention to this debate tonight for vice president kamla Harris the stakes are far High she has sat for an interview since she became the Democratic nominee but much of the country is just starting to pay attention to this presidential race kids are back in school it's it's approaching The Fall season and so this is her opportunity really for the first time in an expansive way to introduce herself to the country and she wants to project I'm told that she is the fresh candidate a new candidate even though she is of course part of this incumbent Administration for former president Donald Trump his prep has been rather informal talking about his different points his arguments with his AIDS behind the scenes but he wants to call himself the change candidate in this election not allow the vice president to have that mantle but to say that he's someone who's railing against the political establishment especially when it comes to issues like the economy and border security what can you tell us about the rules who will stand where who's going to have the final word this debate will take place tonight just about a block or two away from Independence Hall in Philadelphia so this is an area of the city that is drenched in American history and this debate will take place in a theater area in the Constitution Center which is a nearby museum about venerating the Constitution and American constitutional values I've actually been in this event space many times over the years it's a small room so you'll actually have vice president Harris and former president Trump relatively close together standing just as a few feet apart while one candidate is speaking the other candidates mics will be muted but they will be in close proximity to the two moderators from another Network so there's a possibility that sound is heard regardless of the muted mics why are these debates being produced by networks as opposed to the commission of presidential debates there is no law dictating that presidential debates need to be nonpartisan or done by a commission that is only a a relatively new phenomenon over the past three or four decades where this Commission on presidential debates was established in fact in the past there was often some presidential Cycles where no debates or maybe just one debates one debate took place and this is a a tradition that really began in modern times in 1960 with uh John F Kennedy then a senator debating then vice president Richard Nixon and those debates really C caught the interest of the country and they became this tradition that Contin into the 70s ' 80s and '90s and 2000s but both of the campaigns this time around have distanced themselves from this Commission on presidential debates preferring to set the rules with individual networks and then allowing these debates to be simoc cast Nationwide on all different platforms Bob appreciate your analysis as always and we are going to have more on the strategy for both camps in our next half hour appreciate you and we're going to have full coverage of the debate pre-show coverage begins on America decides at 5:00. p.m. Eastern tonight as Bob mentioned ABC News will host the debate but you can watch it right here on CBS news 24/7 and you can stay with us for analysis tropical storm Fran scine is churning through the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen to a category 2 hurricane in just a matter of hours so the storm's outer bands have already washed out parts of Texas and Louisiana is now bracing for impact CBS News National correspondent Dave malov joins us from home Louisiana with more on the storm's path Dave I feel like half of the time we're seeing you these days you're getting ready for a hurricane to make landfall what can you tell us about this one yeah this is a new one and that's the Count Fleet it is a big Tugboat with five was it five five different uh trailers on the back of it it it wow they were bringing all of these I don't even know what that is that they're pushing in but any kind of equipment that is out there Lindsay on the Waterway and this is the inter Coastal it goes down all the way this is all brackish water that goes down to the Gulf of Mexico and now you can get a better look at the at the tugboat captain pushing all this in we were just talking to a tugboat captain and this is part of the hurricane preparation they take all that equipment that is down there and then they bring it far upstream and they tie it to either a tree or a hurricane more Bing that they can have out there to make sure that it's not in the direct path of the hurricane coming through this is a very serious situation because we're talking about a category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds up to 100 milph lensing wow all right so it seems it appears like some resources are still being brought in what is currently available to folks if they're in an emergency well they going to the grocery stores and droves espe here in h to get necessary supplies we're talking about bottles of water I was at the Walmart last night and there was no water inside there I was wondering like where is the one what aisle is it in and then I realized all these empty shelves those were all water in there and we couldn't get any but they are being told to get ready for this storm by people like Governor Landry let's hear what he had to say earlier today we don't want to down play this event but we also do not want people to panic now again is the time to finalize your storm plans and to prepare not only for your families also looking out for your neighbors and that's Latoya Cantrell the mayor of L of New Orleans we are in Southern Louisiana in h and these Southern parishes are the ones that really take a lot of the hit from this storm Lindsay because what happens is the storm comes in it hits the Barrier Islands out there like uh that sit out on the very outer edge of the uh of the of the southern part of Louisiana and then there's all of these brackish areas that are usually in the past was a lot of protection but over the decades you've had water subsiding from there you've had sea level rising you've also had this instance where you don't actually have enough material coming down the Mississippi River and building more land so the bottom part of Louisiana is disappearing and that's becoming a threat for this area especially H and Louisiana oh well I hope you and your crew found water obviously hope you guys continue to stay safe as you uh expect this storm Dave thank you let's bring in CBS News Philadelphia meteorologist Grant Gilmore with a look um Grant what's in store for them Lindsay this is a situation where you're looking at the storm right now you say oh it's just a tropical storm but any storm system that moves into the Gulf of Mexico is just primed and ready for strengthening and that's why the preparations need to be either complete or wrapping up over the next I'd say 6 to 12 hours have a look here several watches and warnings in effect including the most immediate is going to be that Hurricane Warning which is in effect for the majority of the Louisiana coast let me show you the latest here on what is still tropical storm FR scene but I say still this thing is going to start strengthening here pretty quickly over the next 24 hours it's actually already beginning to you can see that tightening swirl there around the center of the tropical storm sustained winds are at 65 milph but it is forecast to become a hurricane later today and then a category 2 hurricane before it makes landfall somewhere along that Louisiana coast through tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening it's not just the winds but it's the rainfall that will bring flooding conditions all throughout the Mississippi through the second half of the week into the weekend that freshwater flooding that rain flooding could amount to some places receiving over a foot of rainfall but in the immediate path of Francine rainfall totals could range between 8 to 10 in it's not just the rain it's not just the wind but the surge some places could see a 5 to 10ft Surge that's water being pushed ashore onto abnormally and what is usually dry ground Lindsay it's a serious situation that people need to take seriously okay Grant appreciate it thank you high temperatures along the west coast are fueling several large wildfires in California which have already scorched thousands of acres and forc tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes Governor Gavin Nome has called in the National Guard to join the nearly 2,000 firefighters that you see on your screen here that are battling the largest Wildfire this is known as the line fire it's burning east of Los Angeles in Southern California's Mountain communities and these firefighters are dealing with trip triple digit heat as they try and put these Flames out and knock down some of this fuel CBS News senior National and environmental correspondent Ben Tracy joins me now with more so Ben what are you seeing today that's different from yesterday and where do things stand so Lindsay the main part of this fire is in the mountains here behind me and I can tell you this morning we're not seeing any visible Flames we're not seeing those big smoke plumes that we have seen the last couple of days now that can change over the course of the day as temperatures rise and the the winds change direction that can pick up very quickly but firefighters in for another grueling day battling this Blaze mainly because this fire is 25,000 Acres already and it's only 5% contained and as you mentioned the heat is a big issue for firefighters to deal with the good news is it's going to be a little cooler today but by Cooler instead of 105 it's going to be about 95 uh but the cooling Trend continues for the next couple of days we'll actually be down in the low 80s high 70s that should give firefighters a chance to gain the upper hand on this thing but one of the biggest problems we're dealing with and you can kind of see it in the air around me here is all the smoke from not only this fire but several other large fires in the area here in Southern California that has made the air quality really nasty in this area and they've had to issue air quality alerts because as you breathe this stuff in you're actually breathing in these fine particles that Lodge in your lungs so it can become a real health issue so Ben let's go ahead and just let viewers know do you guys have masks just to make sure that you guys are also being safe we do we have masks we have goggles CU you also get Ash in your eyes um so these are things you know not only the folks covering this but obviously the people that live around here but first and foremost the firefighters who have to get up close and personal with this stuff okay Ben I always appreciate you thank you so much to Arlington Virginia where Pentagon staff are holding a September 11th Memorial observance ceremony we're going to listen in to this for a little bit and uh we're going to have much more news on the other side of this break [Music] the Gaza Health Ministry says an Israeli air strike has hit a humanitarian Zone local media and gazan officials say the attack killed many civilians but an exact number has not been determined this happened in a tense City in southern Gaza Israel Defense officials claim it was targeting a terrorist command and control center CBS News senior foreign correspondent Elizabeth Palmer has a look at the aftermath in the pitch dark rescue crews did their best combing through the sand to find anyone left alive when the sun rose nothing was moving in the huge blast crater homes possessions whole families were blown away by these air strikes people flew I ad Mar told reporters it's Indescribable body parts we had to dig our children out from under the sand the target was inside alasi Camp an 8mile long strip of beach turned tent city now shelter for more than half a million gazin also says the Israeli military a densely populated hiding place for Hamas Fighters at the hospital medical staff examines still shocked survivors and collected the Dead [Music] so it's pretty difficult even now um well over 12 hours after the air strikes uh to pin down how many people were wounded and killed you have to picture the situation uh there's no heavy equipment and so the rescue crews are still trying to find Bodies In The Sand our colleague in Gaza says that 19 bodies ended up in the hospital uh and another 20/10 he estimates disappeared but it's still going to take time uh before we get exact numbers Lindsay Elizabeth what is the reaction in Israel to the deadly strike Israeli media reaction to these events concentrates on what the IDF uh is saying about the point of the strike so Israelis are hearing that some very senior Hamas commanders were killed in this strike uh and although they do um they do mention that it was in a humanitarian area which uh obviously raises the ethical question of whether it's right ever to fire that kind of Munitions into a densely populated civilian area uh the isra it's safe to say the Israelis are simply not seeing the kind of graphic images of the damage or the casualties that Americans are Israel also just confirmed that the American killed in the Bank was likely unintentionally shot by Israeli forces what are you learning well we were up in the area uh where the shooting occurred yesterday and there is no question that the Israeli soldiers had a clear line of sight to where the group of activists uh including isenor AI were standing they were also some uh other people Palestinian activists in the vicinity very hard to know uh what exactly was going on however the Secretary of State Anthony blinkin has said today no matter what uh the attack was unprovoked or rather the the shooting was unprovoked and unjustified and that nobody should pay with their life uh for attending a demonstration Elizabeth thank you US Secretary of State Anthony blinkin will make a trip this week to Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia UK forign Minister David Lambie will join blinkin on the trip and at a news conference today blinkin and Lamie said their respective countries are prioritizing security assistance to Ukraine CBS reporter Olivia gazes has more on this trip so Olivia what can you tell us about the timing and intent of the visit sure Lindsay while the secretaries jointly announced today that they're making this trip to Ukraine this week it'll be the first such trip by both ministers to ke in over a decade they said and it's trip as much about showing solidarity as it is to uh inquire about the kind of support that Ukraine needs going forward uh it's been widely known that the ukrainians have been asking for the US and UK to permit their W the weapons that they provision to the ukrainians to be allowed to strike deep inside Russia targets inside Russia uh and that has still been the subject of debate within the respective governments uh today uh secretary blinkin when he was asked about it said said that there was always a deliber deliberative process the US has the US has always adapted and adjusted its policies to meet the battlefield needs of Ukraine and one of the overarching purposes of this trip is to hear directly from Ukrainian officials including president zalinski about what exactly the ukrainians think they need in this moment and then to bring those messages back to prime minister Kier starmer and President Biden uh who will be meeting in Washington later this week Olivia gazes thank you former New York Governor Andrew kuomo will be grilled on Capitol Hill today over his administration's handling of the covid-19 pandemic in nursing homes we're live on the hill you're streaming CBS News [Music] 247 here's a look at some of the top stories we're following several wildfires are burning through Southern California right now showing you images right now from the airport fire in Orange County mandatory evacuation orders were in place as the Flames torch thousands of Acres officials believe this fire was likely sparked by Public Works Crews using heavy machinery in the area now this is different from the line fire where we saw Ben reporting from the San Bernardino Mountains earlier firefighters though were still battling triple digit temperatures and steep terrain as they work to contain all these fires in the area hopefully cooler weather will give them the upper hand in the coming days we're also following that ongoing man hunt for the shooting suspect accused of opening fire on a Kentucky Highway on Saturday an arrest warrant revealed a suspect Joseph couch sent a chilling text message minutes before the attack saying quote I'm going to kill a lot of people five people were injured in the incident and in Georgia students are returning to school today in Barrow County 6 days after the deadly shooting in the school district left four people dead there's still no return date set for students at appalache high school where the Fatal incident took place a 14-year-old suspect is charged as an adult with four counts of murder his father is also facing charges including involuntary manslaughter we want to take you now to Capitol Hill where house leaders are holding a press conference after a closed door Meeting House speaker Mike Johnson speak gold medal families and we we remember September 11th uh that freedom is precious and the people who are willing to devote and even offer their lives and service to that should be duly honored let me address the CR and the save act um we had a good meeting with conference just now some very thoughtful discussion with all the House Republicans and let me just explain very briefly and very simply why I think this is the appropriate thing for us to do we have two primary responsibilities upon us right now I mean the Congress the House of Representatives and that is to responsibly fund the government and to do everything within our constitutional Authority to ensure that we have a free and fair election everyone in this country is concerned about that how can I say that because I've been traveling the country non-stop as of uh the end of last week I have done campaign and fundraising events large events in 198 cities across 39 States Coast to Coast from Washington State to Miami from Maine to California All Points in between it does not matter where I am or what public forum it is every single time almost without exception and all of the those cities every time open it up for audience questions the first or second question is about election security the American people in blue States and red States and big cities in Rural America they're worried about this we have to do what we can the save Act is a response to what we deem to be one of the immediate threats and that is illegals voting how can we say that they say it's not really a problem Democrats say it's already against federal law it is against federal law but so is miners buying alcohol but we still require identification to do it why because just because something's on on the books doesn't mean people are going to comply you don't get to go into a liquor store or to go buy cigarettes and check a box and say oh yeah I'm 21 give me the product that's not how it works it's not logical it is an exceedingly logical thing to require the states to request proof of citizenship before they sign somebody up to vote this is happening across the country Pennsylvania is a very important swing state thousands of illegals r on the voter roles there Georgia thousands of ille Eagles on the on the butter rals Ohio Texas across the the board across the country every time Virginia every time a state looks at this they find that it is happening we are in an era of Razor thin election margins right the polling right now on the presidential is the closest that it's ever been I don't put much stake in that I'm convinced Donald Trump's going to win the White House and I can't wait for it to happen but it will be decided by a narrow margin if you believe the polls we have members of Congress as you know marionette Miller Meeks won her first election in 2020 to Congress by six votes we have members in California who have won their Garcia darte and others won their districts by 200 votes 300 votes it matters if you have a few thousand illegals participating in an election in the wrong place you can change the makeup of Congress and you can affect a presidential election the American people understand this it is an 87% issues it's almost 910 doesn't matter what party people are in they they they demand they want us and they deserve us to take this action and make sure that illegals cannot taint the election only US citizens should vote in US elections and the Democrats apparently don't agree with that we have been listening to this uh press conference weekly press conference from House GOP leaders we're listening to speaker Johnson right now and he was talking about an effort um to Parlay a government funding stop Gap measure with the save act which would prevent undocumented immigrants from voting which is already um a law on the books I want to go ahead and bring in CBS News Congressional correspondent Scott m Farland who joins me now um so Scott we we discussed this yesterday and it appears by the way I should mention that Johnson does not have the votes for this stop Gap measures so back to the drawing board but he's talking and sort of comparing the idea of undocumented immigrants voting in elections to minors being allowed to you know not being allowed to to drink alcohol and buy alcohol saying that just because there's a law in the books doesn't mean it's not happening has Johnson or other GOP leaders provided evidence that this is rampant really feels like political messaging close to an election if you talk to Democrats they say this is headed nowhere politically there's not sufficient votes to pass it and there's no need to pass it because there's a federal ban already and walking out of the meeting with Republicans any number of them told me there's no plan B right now this is all they have to vote on to keep the government open September 30th so because it doesn't have sufficient votes because they hav in detailed an alternative plann Democrats say this feels a lot like a political messaging bill which amplifies baseless claims of fraud in the 2020 election and leans hard into what Donald Trump argues that there is fraud a Comon in 2024 Mike Johnson has a math problem on this bill that he can't escape there is not sufficient support among Republicans to get it P Democrats told me they don't expect any of their members to vote in support of this so whether it even comes up for a vote on the house floor is a mystery as the week begins here all right Scott let's talk about something else that's going to happen in cap in the the capital behind you today uh we know that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is going to be on the hill uh what can you tell us about the policy uh involving nursing homes and covid-19 they're really going to drill him on and how do you expect kuo will fight back he rarely takes a fight laying down the committee staging this hearing has two different identities the chairman of this committee is a retiring Ohio Republican congressman who is also a doctor Brad winstrip who told me when he launched this covid subcommittee last year he's going to make it apolitical about health and about science and there have been no criticisms of Dr winstrip stewardship of this committee from many of the Democrats watching it but this subcommittee also has Marjorie Taylor green it also has Trump's former doctor Congressman Ronnie Jackson and it has in the witness chair today Andrew Cuomo so there's an expectation of some political fire from both directions it's been a multi-month investigation Lindsay into that nursing home policy from March 25th 2020 about allowing covid positive patients to be placed in nursing homes in New York any number of concerns about how that policy manifested itself and how it played out and what type of ownership the former Governor took or didn't take of that policy that'll be the focus of questions here today this is certainly a worthwhile issue both parties agree to investigate but putting this thing on the calendar between Labor Day and election day is going to supercharge it with political heat okay um also want to ask you about something else happening today in your world and that is Speaker Johnson holding an event to honor the Fallen 13 soldiers who died during part of the Afghanistan withdrawal with Congressional gold medals who is expected to be there family members representatives of those 13 service members killed in that suicide bombing and Cobble and the leadership of both parties will be overseeing this Congressional gold medal ceremony it'll be Republicans and Democrats in both Chambers likely a pretty big crowd of members of Congress and Military connected support groups and families inside the capital this again follows under that same category of something both parties are certainly interested in doing and think important and valuable and a message to the country but putting it just before election day on the same day as a presidential debate where this suicide bombing seems certain to come up is going to leave it vulnerable to criticisms of politicization all right Scott we know you'll continue to monitor um all the events happening and bring us back news when you get it thank you vice president Harris and former president Trump are said to face off tonight in Philadelphia in their first possibly only presidential debate we have Team coverage in Philadelphia today so for more on how the campaigns are preparing tonight and what is at stake let's bring in CBS News campaign reporters Aaron Navaro and Olivia raldi Aaron let's start with you in the Harris campaign what can we expect from Harris on stage tonight and since microphones won't be muted how has she had to Pivot her strategy advisers familiar with the process tells CBS News we can expect Harris to lean on the contrast with Trump over policy but at the same time they do want to get under Trump's skin as this might be the only National stage we see both candidates until the November election now the Harris campaign had been pushing for weeks now for a hot mic situation the Trump campaign argued the same rules from the CNN debate where the mic was muted for the person whose turn it was not to speak should remain ABC decided to stick with what CNN had in that first debate the Harris campaign was looking to have her really lean into her prosecutor background do cross-examinations with Trump uh retorts be ready for some of his outbursts that it seems like it won't happen due to the microphone situation so they're really focusing on making sure her answers are concise in her one two minute 30 second bites Olivia CBS News polling shows Trump has a lead on Harris on border security inflation and foreign policy how do we expect him to hammer down on these issues tonight hey Lindsay these issues are key to the Trump campaign we often hear him talk about immigration and the border and we suspect tonight that is going to be Central to a lot of his policy points that he's going to make on a press call yesterday advisers like Jason Miller uh told us that those are the Central Key talking points and really what the key is here is that they're going to be tying Harris back to the Biden Administration that's their goal tonight is to let Americans know that are watching that whatever you're feeling about High prices or inflation they're going to try to tie that back to vice president kamla Harris try to make sure she's not getting away from that record that they feel they're more strongly able to make to the American people so that's the goal there but you know to the debate prep questions that Aaron just got in what we were talking about Trump says he's not holding these formal policy discussions like Harris these these overprepared these prepared rather uh discussions that she's having and instead just holding informal conversations with congresswoman or former congresswoman tulsey gabard rather and congresswoman Congressman Matt Gates so those are the conversations Trump is having and how he is really preparing for the debate tonight Aon we've learned Harris will bring two former Trump officials to the debate who are they and what's the strategy former Pence advisor Olivia Troy as well as former White House communications director under Trump Anthony scaramucci will be doing a pressor right before the debate will be present as somewhat surrogates for Harris campaign it's all part of a strategy to bring up uh former Trump officials uh and that are against him now in his 2024 bid they aired an ad in Battleground states that featured his former vice president Mike Pence talking about how he is quote uh unfit for office and a threat to democracy it's all part of a strategy to try and cut into some of the more moderate Republican support Trump has as well as cut in get a point or two in those rural counties where Democrats and Harris campaign believes if they get those points taken off and towards their column it'll help them win those Battleground States Aaron real quick what a success look like for Harris tonight from talking to voters they really want to hear her talk about policy and the campaign that Democrats I've talked to acknowledge that Harris is just not as well known as Trump this is about 90 minutes or so for her to Define herself to a big audience talk about her record and that's what some of the more democratic voters I've been talking to in Pennsylvania are looking for clar on where she stands on the issues Olivia what about for Trump the Trump campaign has said that what would be a successful night for them is one hammering Harris on a lot of these policy points and tying her back to the Biden Administration that is what they have said their goal is ultimately tonight Trump feels that he's known to the American voter their advisers feel that the onus tonight is really on vice president KLA Harris Ain and Olivia thank you a reminder will have full coverage of the debate between Harris and Trump hosted by ABC news but you can watch it on CBS News 247 pre-show coverage begins on America decides at 500 PM Eastern well authorities are calling for mandatory evacuations in three Louisiana Coastal communities as tropical storm Francine turns toward the state it's expected to be a hurricane by the time it makes landfall and earlier Michael Bren the director of the National Hurricane Center joined CBS News 247 and discussed the storm's path well you know the the most immediate uh threat that you know people along the coast of Louisiana are going to face is the life-threatening storm surge inundation and we have a storm surge warning in effect for much of the Louisiana Coastline uh we're particularly concerned about this area from Cameron through Vermillion Bay over to Port foron where we could see 5 to 10 feet of inundation above ground level so that's why they called for evacuations and some of these parishes along the Louisiana coast so we want people to try to get out today because the conditions are going to really deteriorate quickly tomorrow and then from the wind perspective when you start talking about a category 2 hurricane we have hurricane warnings in effect for much of the Louisiana coast as well all the from Grand Isle all the way over to Sabine Pass everywhere you see in red here even a little ways Inland that's an area where you could see widespread power outages some structural damage tree damage uh and it' be a very dangerous day to be outside tomorrow so everybody in those storm surge and Hurricane Warning areas in particular is going to want to be in their safe place to ride out the storm kind of by Nightfall tonight at the at the latest and be prepared to shelter in place through the day on Wednesday let's bring in CBS News meteorologist Grant Gilmore so Grant in addition to those areas that are going to feel the full impact there are areas in Francine sites that have already seen what half a foot to a foot of rain dumped on them some places in Southern Texas down towards Brownsville already getting some of those outer bands Lindsay and that's going to continue as the storm moves to the north but this is a CR critical time period within the next 24 hours to where we see how Francine strengthens and one of the ways that we can get a better idea of what's going to happen so we can put together a better forecast as we send the hurricane hunters and they fly into the storm to Monitor and record the weather information for what's happening inside the storm one of those hurricane Hunters just made a pass right through the center of the storm and they found estimated surface wind speeds around 67 mph now that is below hurricane strength but we've seen on the radar presentation is a strengthening hurricane you see some of those tighter wind bands there rain bands right around the center of the hurricane and that's an indication that we're starting to see this what is now a tropical storm get a little more organized it still has a little ways to go as it tracks to the north but those Waters in the western Gulf of Mexico are relatively warm and that will be the fuel for Francine to strengthen over the next 24 hours still forecast to be a category 2 hurricane with wind speeds of 100 milph before making landfall now this is the 8:00 advisory we will get a new update from the Hurricane Center at 11:00 to give us not just how strong it is but we'll a new cone for where the storm is forecasted to go regardless in addition to the wind and the storm surge you just heard the director talking about it's going to bring a lot of rainfall to portions of the South Central Gulf Coast some places could pick up to an additional foot of rainfall on top of some of the rain that they've already seen over the last 24 hours that surge though an immediate concern right along that Louisiana coast 5 to 10 ft of that water being pushed onto what is usually dry ground meanwhile over on the west coast we have an ongoing threat for some elevated fire conditions Breezy and dry conditions of concern meanwhile the Northeast enjoying Pleasant more fall-like conditions with temperatures in the lower 80s Lindsay over to you grant thank you calls are growing for some of the New York City mayor's top aids to resign amid a federal corruption probe we're going to have the latest and how the mayor is responding you're streaming CBS News [Music] 247 pressure is ramping up for a top New York City official to resign from mayor Eric Adams Administration Police Commissioner Edward command is one of several people being investigated by the FBI for possible corruption I want to bring in CBS News New York reporter Derek Waller Derek what exactly is the NYPD commissioner being accused of and how is the mayor responding uh Lindsay it's unclear exactly what the FBI is investigating but I can tell you it was not just the commissioner's phone that was seized they also seized the phones of several other high-ranking police officials as well as other members of Mayor Eric Adams Inner Circle including the the Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety and the schools chancellor who by the way happen to be brothers as well as another deputy mayor as well Sheena Wright uh they also seized the phone of commissioner kab's identical twin brother James sources tell us that portion of the investigation has to do with allegations that he worked as a fixed Ser for Manhattan restaurants and nightclubs using his police connections basically to help those businesses fight violations including noise complaints Lindsay there are calls for command to step down what is he saying and are there concerns that the head of the largest police force has roped into this investigation so far he says he's not going anywhere and on Monday he actually gave a speech on Public Safety but did not take any reporter questions on camera now off camera he did tell our political reporter Marshall Kramer that the rumors of his resignation were false that is the public line but four different sources have actually told us that his resignation is indeed imminent and even mayor Adams appears to be softening his support of the commissioner he appointed just last year now at a briefing on Monday he was asked whether kaban should resign and this was his response I don't think anything in life is guaranteed uh I would say this uh when I chose uh Eddie I chose him for his experience and what he brought after 30 something years of service and so you know rumors are always out there so Lindsay not exactly a ringing endorsement there um so that kind of tells you where this may be headed okay Derek appreciate you in our colleagues reporting thank you so much for joining us Pope Francis held a Mass for the largest crowd of Catholic worshippers in East teamour today more than half a million gathered for the historic event but as CBS News Anna mat trango reports it's happening as pressure grows to address sex abuse in the church there's an air of jubilant celebration here in Dil where hundreds of thousands of people have come from all over the country to celebrate Mass with Pope Francis since his arrival in East tear the streets have been packed with cheering crowds about 98% of the population here is Catholic making this the most Catholic state in the world after the Vatican it's also one of the poorest with a birth rate that ranks among the highest in the world during his homy the pope praised the timares for having so many children saying you are a young country and we can see every corner of your land teeming with life as East teamour moves forward in its Economic Development he cautioned the nation not to blindly pursue Prosperity at the cost of forgetting the poor underneath a seemingly perfect facade he said wealth can hide a wretched and cruel reality the poor go hungry and morality is abandoned this trip is a highlight on the Pope's visit to East teamour and indeed a highlight on the entire trip to Asia and the Pacific the longest trip of his papacy and thank you spacex's latest Mission polar's Dawn takes flight with a crew of four civilians we're going to have details on plans for the very first commercial space walk you're streaming CBS News 247 4 3 2 1 [Music] and cop one alpha SpaceX has officially launched its Polaris Dawn rocket into orbit the rocket lifted off early this morning from Kennedy Space Center taking a four-person crew farther into space than any spacecraft since the Apollo Moon missions CBS News space analyst Bill Harwood has more this is really an ambitious mission for SpaceX and quite a feather in their cap if they can pull it off they have two major objectives here they're going to fly higher than any astronauts or cosmonauts have flown since the end of the Apollo program more than 50 years ago they're going to be in an elliptical orbit with a high point of 870 miles that's something like 500 600 miles higher than the International Space Station flies so they're going to get some spectacular views of earth in the process uh but I think the thing that's gotten the most attention obviously is they're planning the first commercial civilian space walks non-government space walks no one's ever done that before uh they're going to be wearing space suits designed by SpaceX they're they're hoping that these will be easier to manufacture less expensive than these bulky space suits NASA's been using now for decades and really open up the High Frontier to more and more people so Jared isaacman the man who chartered this Mission the billionaire philanthropist and Sarah Gillis who's a engineer at SpaceX for each going to spend about 15 minutes just outside the forward hatch of the crew Dragon module testing out these new suits proving they have good Mobility that they're comfortable safe to wear uh before coming back inside so it's a big step forward for SpaceX there's quite a bit of risk involved in all of this of course but they think they've got that well managed and they're optimistic about the outcome Lindsay thanks Bill let's bring in CBS News Philadelphia meteorologist Grant Gilmore with the last look at the national forecast I Grant the big headline in your world is Francine yeah watching Francine really closely so is a lot of the GF Coast right with every update that we get from the national hurricane hurricane center seeing what's going on with Francine in fact we just got that latest update from the National Hurricane Center so this is the 11:00 advisory for the East Coast 10 o'cl for central time zones the wind speeds have not increased which is in a sense good news but we are seeing some other indications that Francine is beginning to organize pressure is dropping we're seeing some more organized signatures on the radar so we expect that intensification process to begin now with this latest update the forecast is not for it to become a category 2 hurricane anymore but still a very strong category 1 hurricane as it approaches landfall on the Louisiana coast through tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening then it will bring heavy rainfall across much of the Mid and Southern Mississippi Valley meanwhile looking at Pleasant conditions across the Northeast with temperatures in the low and mid 80s warming conditions across the plain states out ahead of the moisture in front of Francine and then youve got dry fire conditions and hot conditions back into the desert Southwest with cooler temperatures more fallik into the Pacific Northwest Lindsay over to you okay Grant thanks so much for bringing that latest update to us and thank you for being with us we're going to show you an encore of CBS mornings next I'm going to see you back here at noon Eastern you're streaming CBS News 247 [Music]
