Dan Orlovsky breaks NFL Week 1: Joe Burrow & Caleb Williams struggle, Steelers start Fields as QB1

the Jersey looks not big yeah I was not as big then as I am now I'll tell you that much uh I was more of a kicker in that then I feel like I'm a left guard at this point um anyway enough about my great High School football career Dan is deshun Watson good enough to be a starting NFL quarterback right now I it's hard to say yes to that um I think that we're holding on to the things of the past to continue to say that I know it's week one I would be thinking long and hard about jamus Winston in a very short period of time if I was the Cleveland Browns um we just haven't seen anything out of DeShawn in his game outside of maybe a half of last season that gives me hope I think there's a couple things attach this one I'm not unaware the offensive line did not play good yesterday okay I'm not unaware of that but here's the thing you Kevin stefansky can't run his system with DeShaun Watson at quarterback right now this system you have to be under Center more you have to run the play action pass more you have to have some Rhythm and timing to your offense there's absolutely none right now Deshawn's not seeing the field well he is missing throws and when I say missing throws there's throws yesterday where I think they missed by six or seven yards not six or seven feet I mean there's throws yesterday just so off and then also for the amount of money we're paying there is no plus place there's no oh man we got beat and oh you made a play so I it's week one yes but I I think that's their reality in Cleveland Dan yesterday might have been a first for me I don't think I've ever seen a player inactive wear shoulder pads but that's what we saw at Atlanta with Russell wock yeah but I mean Justin field stepped in um after Russell Wilson won the quarterback battle he isn't able to play Justin field stepp in what did you see from him what did you see from that Steelers offense yeah Russ wouldn't play for me um with the way Justin played I've been on play Justin train and yesterday one I thought Justin managed the game very well which is kind of one of the things we wanted from him he realized defense was dominant didn't have to try and do too much I thought they would have scored more points if not for stalling out a little bit kind of like The Fringe Red Zone so I did like some of the stuff that their offense did he threw the ball remarkably well downfield the George Pickins created some big plays so I'd love that um some of the designed quarterback run and scrambles were big I think the two things that you want to see is one Justin have a little bit more understanding of some matchups I thought there were some matchups that you sit there and go Justin you got pickings in the slot on a linebacker you don't have to overthink this one now and also the one of my overwhelming takes yesterday is like the offensive coaching in the NFL right now there is such a disconnect with the timing in a quarterback's feet to the timing of a pass concept Justin still is ready to throw before receivers are looking so that's something Pittsburgh's got to get better at and then also Justin's never going to be good at the quick game like you know quick game like coaches are calling it we just want to get five yards get it out of our hand that's just they can't do that in Pittsburgh with him at least right now so if he is going to be the guy like they got to figure out a way um of how to get some small efficient pass game Parts in their offense maybe it's some more rpos rather than three-step quick game because that's just not how Justin's going to operate but what I saw yesterday specific to Pittsburgh um Justin would be my guy Atlanta that was horrific scheme-wise horrific I did not expect that to take Kirk Cousins who's the play action pass King and not run any play action to not put him under Center do everything from the shotgun and the pistol goes back to my previous point of the Rhythm and timing but uh total egg by Atlanta Dan big win for gerod mayo and his New England Patriots debut over the Cincinnati Bengals and the Joe burrow era Cincinnati historically gets off to a slow start do you think that this is no reason to panic with Cincinnati or a little bit uh of something to be concerned with when it comes to the Bengals oh I would totally be concerned about it I mean it was New England so the expectation was even without a t Higgins you'd score enough to go win I think Cincinnati's still trying to figure out like to try to find more creative ways to become explosive on offense I've said this for two and a half three years you're not going to be that explosive on offense if you live in the shotgun in the NFL um and we can sit there and go there's Simplicity cuz we have Jamar Chase and catch and throw I teams are on to it and they're going to have to grow and adjust and I love Zack Taylor I think he's a very good coach you have to grow and adjust offensively um they did not run the ball well but again when you live in that catch and throw offense you're not going to my big concern I said this on NFL live last week we we could talk about Jamar Chase and we could talk about t Higgins all dude that team's not going to matter when it comes to the truth of winning the division and going on a super run if they can't stop the run and I thought that was going to be the big issue yesterday in New England ran for like a buck 990 on them or something like that you know so like this DJ reader is is going to be a big loss you know Chris Jenkins Jr's their draft pick out of Michigan obviously game one so like they're going to have to get a lot better at stopping the run but um I I I I I still think their offensive scheme needs to develop we're talking with Dan orlovski of course ESPN NFL analyst here on on Sportsman like presented by Progressive Insurance Dan has asked in the past about joining our big events when we are all getting together tonight we are going to watch Monday Night Football together here in Connecticut so if you want I mean I guess you're invited I mean if you want to come back to Connecticut for that anyway uh Dan anyway because we know he was going to say no to that one Dan um Carolina has ruined Bryce young or Bryce young has ruined Carolina I'm not re ready to say Rune in either of those yet I'm not going to lie yesterday was obviously Rocky it tough to watch I'm not at runed yet I've been adamant and tried to stay disciplined this off season that I'm not going to make a ton of judgments on Bryce young in Carolina this year because I still think they're a year away from even making a real evaluation on him because their talent is so um or was so depleted and only minimally better but it was tough yesterday I I did not expect some of the errant misses which weren't a part of his game at Alabama to show so I'm not ready to say ruined yet I I still want to see more I and I'm I'm really trying to stay disciplined I'm not making a massive judgment this year Dano tonight we got Aaron roders back on Monday Night Football we know what happened a year ago for him so 40 years old coming off of V ailles injury this starts a stretch of three games in 10 days for the New York Jets what do they have to do tonight to come out of San Francisco with a win yeah I think specifically to the offense like I would really try to mirror a lot of what I saw Dallas do offensive offensively yesterday versus Cleveland um you saw they jet sweeped towards miles Garrett to put him in Conflict a little bit a lot of the under Center play action stuff where they had multiple bodies hitting him quickly before and then getting into their pass route some bootlegs away from him um some Sprint outs away from him so like I I think new New York's going to have to try to move the pocket a little bit move Aaron just a little bit make sure that they're not letting Nick Bosa ruin the football game I think that's the one guy on that defense that probably would be able to do that they're going to have to be remarkable at the yards after the catch you know which is tough to do in week one because you're so used to in practice like catch and you know try to make three or four moves excuse me EXC me before you do anything this zone defense in San Francisco hunts so I think that and then they got to hit one explosive per quarter you know in their play action game Crosser versus some of these levels of this defense so strictly to that offense I and then this has got to be like a 68 to 70% completion game for Aaron you know so um there's a lot of like some of those real Basics that to give thems a chance um you know defensively they're going to have to try to attack the right side of San Francisco's offensive line I don't think it's a like impossible to do but I I picked San Francisco to win Dan let's go from a veteran like Aaron Rogers to a rookie and Caleb Williams what did you see from him in his debut yeah not Arizona State anymore bub uh no I I it wasn't all that unexpected I I think Tennessee's defensive line is fantastic to me it looked like Caleb was thinking often when he got the ball of of a hundred different things what's the coverage what's my play what are my feet supposed to be doing what drop is this don't leave the pocket and so just overwhelmed uh not unexpected you know I think their offensive line was outmatched at times as well so uh and I Al I also believe there was multiple moments when you know Caleb tried to do some of the USC stuff and you just realize it's not happening you know not not as much as it did you know there's a couple times on first down where you know like he tries to run around or whatnot and then it's second and 133 it went to Second and 28 once so I think there was like that that moment of all right like again I've said this offseason when can you and when can't you and he's still got to learn that but just um a lot of information overload for him Dan orlovski ESPN NFL analyst you'll see him on get off first take NFL live all over the place does a phenomenal job and we thank him for joining us thank you Dan we appreciate it thanks guys all right there's Dan orlovski a lot to digest obviously with week one including what Smalls just asked about with the cinnati Bengals that is potentially a problem another slow start will dissect that coming up it's un Sportsman like presented by Progressive Insurance greedy I'm picturing the ultimate marketer the ultimate salesman which is Jerry Jones imagin foreign for fore e okay e spe than youe
