Susan Hirasuna, and welcome to the Fox 11 Weekend News. The high heat. We're experiencing isn't helping firefighters in their battle against the line fire. Tens of thousands of structures are threatened as the line fire in San Bernardino explodes to more than 17,000 acres. Evacuation orders have been issued and firefighters face the challenge of pounding thunderstorms. Fox Eleven's Chelsea Edwards is live in Highland with the latest on the emergency Chelsea. Susan, those firefighters have really been facing a whole host of weird and wild conditions out here. We've had heavy rain, we've had thunderstorms, we've had lightning strikes, also had some heavy wind and of course we've got the smoky conditions. When all of that is out of the way. So the fire is mostly burning now in the bulk back there in the San Bernardino National Forest. That's where a lot of homes are threatened up in the Running Springs area. Now we're at the base of the mountains, also in a mandatory evacuation zone. All these homes here are under evacuation orders. And take a look at some of that charred ground. Look how close those flames got to these brand new homes in the Highland area. Several feet in some cases. Listen here. I think they're doing a really good job. Yeah, yeah, I see them drive by my house, like, every 20 minutes. Or driving by her house every 20 minutes. There's pretty much one station by every street. So they're doing really good. Yeah. So as of now, the fire's charred more than 17,000 acres. More than 35,000 structures currently threatened, including homes and commercial buildings. Firefighters have been working around the clock to protect property. Keep this fire from spreading, but as of now, it is at 0% containment. Governor Gavin Newsom now proclaimed a state of emergency for San Bernardino County as a result of this blaze, and residents in Running Springs also, as you just heard there, grateful for evacuation orders. Everybody here. So thankful for these firefighters. Now take a look at this. Animals of course, are being evacuated. Two homeowners have been taking dogs, horses and livestock, all of them going to the Devore animal shelter in San Bernardino. That's where all evacuees are being told to go and to take their pets if they need to go to a place where animals are not allowed. Now, take a look at this. This is what we've been talking about. The wild thing today has been the weather. So we've had thunderstorms that were moving in over the area, which prompted actually a flash flood warning in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. That warning just expired a few minutes ago. Those downpours started this afternoon about 20 miles west of Highland, and it really seemed to take people by surprise as they were out there on the freeways. And along with the rain came roaring thunder and lightning. That lightning just another concern for firefighters and residents alike as it can, of course, spark entirely new fires separate from the ones that are currently burning. Hopefully, though, the rain that we saw kind of helped saturate that ground a little bit. Now the temperature has dropped drastically as we take a live look here because of that rain. It really has seemed to dampen down a little bit. Now we're just seeing these really smoky and very warm conditions out here. I don't know if you can see, but we can see the smoke, kind of the ash swirling in the air. And again, that fire at 0% containment right now burning most of it in the forest back there. Of course, we'll be giving you live updates throughout the evening as we can. We are live in this community here in a mandatory evacuation zone in the in the Highland area. I don't know if you can hear. It sounds like some people are here though. And having possibly watching a football game, it sounds like we can hear a lot of cheers and whooping from one of these homes that is in the mandatory evacuation zone. So we'll see if we can talk to those folks. We
