Malcolm Kelly TC wide receivers coach he spoke to the media yesterday and had some interesting thoughts or I guess a a vision for what Savon Williams could be in this offense we'll talk about that more next turn lockdown horn frogs it's your team every day you are locked on horn frogs your daily podcast on the TCU horn frogs part of the locked on podcast Network your team every every day lock on horn frogs your team every day I'm your host Sten s subscribe to the YouTube channel we're also free and available wherever is you get your podcast appreciate you making the show your first listen today uh fall Camp is underway frogs had practice number three actually had practice tonight it was at 6 PM this evening instead of early in the morning which was a new wrinkle not sure the Rhyme or Reason behind that but uh maybe just some extra recovery time frogs hitting the field again still just in helmets basically so um you know getting used to the offense and defense doing some install stuff doing some team sessions but for the most part kind of getting back acquainted with uh the practice schedule itself Malcolm Kelly TC wide receivers coach spoke to the media yesterday and you know Malcolm is one of the best coaches on his coaching staff he's done a really good job recruiting um he's developed first round Talent at that position I think one of the smartest things Sunny Dykes did when he took this job was keep him on staff and he's continued to grow and develop as a coach and honestly I'm kind of surprised that TC's been able to keep him around for so long not because they don't have the resources to but just because I imagine he gets a lot of interest from other schools and I don't know what his aspirations are if he wants to be a play caller one day or a head coach but he certainly uh handles the job really well and when you hear him speak to the media you kind of see somebody who just has a great confidence in himself and a feel for you know what he wants to be as a football coach and so he talked about a lot of different things in this media session and it was good to hear from him but one thing that I really keyed in on was he discussed Savon Williams and Savon is poised to have a big year you know towards the end of the season we really saw him come alive now the thing with Savon his whole career has been it's sort of been inconsistent like he'll show up in some moments but then he'll disappear for a while now that 2022 run that they had Quinton Johnson was the guy but Savon still had some uh big plays big catches down the stretch and last season you know the Texas game comes to mind and Baylor as well but by and large he wasn't the dominant force that we thought he could be and this is a new year and at that outside wide receiver spot there's a couple of guys that you expect to have good Seasons Eric McAllister dalen Wright and Savon is the returner um that has the most production aside from JP Richardson but JP plays in the slot instead of on the outside and one thing that intrigued me when he talked about Savon was he discussed how they really want to get him the ball in a lot of different ways he talked about putting him in the back field uh and he he discussed how they did this a little bit last year but they want to incorporate more in the offense putting him in the back field uh you know handing him the ball off he even talked about some direct snap stuff which I don't remember him getting in any direct snap formations last season maybe that was something they practiced and they didn't actually put to the game but I certainly remember in the Red Zone uh you know some of those little pot passes or jet sweeps where they trying to get him on the edge I don't love that and it's not because of him it's just because I want to see more downhill attacking in you know scoring territory like I want the guys to run north and south and I hope Kendall BRS does more of that this season I think that's something Sunny dyes needs to emphasize and say hey we like even if we're not great at the point of attack this is the easiest way to get um first downs and short yard situations instead of trying to get to the edge and outrun people to Sidelines each and every time but I will say one thing that I really loved that they starting to incorporate late in the season with him was getting Sav On the ball on those little quick outside screens where it's just one step throw him the football and let him turn around and go to work you know typically you have one wide receiver the guy next to him is is trying to set up a block and then he'll get around that and get down the field and with his size and he's got kind of an angry streak when he runs like he'll bounce off a tackle he'll run through somebody make a play um it's just it's it's definitely gonna be positive yards and there were a few times last season where he was able to pick up seven eight yards on a first down and that's huge man like keeping this offense on schedule and making sure Josh Hoover is in second and third and manageable throughout the season is going to be a big piece this team having success so I love the sound of that some of the other wrinkles I don't know about and I will caution everyone like this is the time of year that you hear about these things but then when the game starts you you hear about all sorts of things a couple years back we heard all about Sam Jackson how he was going to be a part of the offense right like even though he's a third quarterback he was going to be in the offense in some former fashion he wasn't really that involved I hope they'll incorporate hos Haney into the offense a little bit this year but what I mean is you'll hear a lot of things over the next few weeks that they're going to try to do and some of it they will some of they won't get to but I like the idea of getting savy on the ball in places where he has the opportunity to get yards after the catch because he's done that well in the past and it's it doesn't just have to be in the screen game but I think that's one way that you can um get him easily involved and get positive yards and it can sort of supplement your run game at times and be beneficial for your offense but there's nobody on this roster has a better shot to take a step forward as you know a dude that could be a potential first round pick next year than Savon Williams so I I hope it works out I hope that he puts together all the physical gifts that he's shown throughout his time at TCU and that it's just a perfect storm of him thriving in an environment where they're making it a point get him the football which according to Malcolm Kelly is what they want to do he also talked about how they're healthy at at this uh in this receiver room for the first time in a while you know dalen Wright dealt with a bunch of kind of nagging injuries throughout the year um they want to play a lot of people and part of that's just being in the high Tempo offense so don't get too caught up I mean it matters who starts but that doesn't mean if if you're running with the twos you're not going to get significant playing time not going to get opportunities to get the ball in your hands um so that's gonna be a big key having depth which I feel like they do have that and you know dalen Wright is a he's a special talent the question for him is the same that it's been really his whole career which is can he stay healthy and can he stay involved in the offense and last season Sunny discussed a lot one thing that you could tell really bothered him and I don't think he was NE necessarily taking shots at the Players but it was just like this is how it is was the fact that each and every week you had a different receiver who was out of the lineup for some ailment or another and you know guys can't control getting hurt but the bottom line is especially when you're shuffling quarterback play which they had to do mid-season it's really tough to get a rhythm in a chemistry on those timing routes and a lot of different things that you want to do in this offense if you're not practicing on a regular basis so fingers cross those guys can stay healthy and can make things happen uh another note from that media session JoJo Earl moving to the outside wide receiver spot which I mean I'm willing to give it a shot you know I thought JoJo was gonna be a guy in the slot last year that could make an impact that never really came to fruition he did have a good game against Oklahoma where he played on the outside but I'm just skeptical how much can a 510 wide receiver really do at that spot I mean I know he's he's really fast and he's got that burner speed but that's another reason why I would love to see him running over the middle of the field making plays up the seam and making things happen now I'm not necessarily worried about the depth at inside wide receiver because I think they got a lot of dudes that can play there and then you also have some talented tight ends so the middle of the field is going to be occupied and they're going to use it it but I'm just not sure that's a place where JoJo can be super successful but coaching staff see something there I guess and they're gonna give him a shot um and maybe in certain instances it'll work I just I might be too hyperfocused on uh the Stater I'm just not sure that that's gonna happen and finally I do want to talk about this as well they were asking him about the defense and just his thoughts on it his impressions what he's seen from Fall camp and he said that this defense in this defense they're gonna play a lot more press coverage uh which hey I like it I like the aggressiveness now that means a couple things one your Corners better be ready to play um so Avery Helm I know he's ready to go who's gonna be that number two spot I'm not sure but sounds like they're going to be on an island a lot and they're going to have to be physical and jam got the line of scrimmage and redirect them knock them off their routes so that's a big responsibility but I do also think hopefully that's a really good thing for these receivers during practice when they're doing these team sessions and during one-on-one drills getting you know a feel and a look at okay this is what teams are going to try to do to us at times we have to be able to get free releases get off the line of scrimmage you know knock those hands down and take advantage of that first step knowing where I'm going running crisp routes uh running with purpose and executing at a high level so that could be really beneficial for these wide outs as they learn and develop during fall camp but yeah a lot of press coverage from Andy aalos and Company and I like the energy and enthusiasm that I've heard about from that side of the ball uh I do have a little hesitancy that it seems like the defense has won a lot of battles in spring camp and early in Fall Camp I know there's continuity on that defense I do also think man if this offense can't kind of confuse this defense and make plays on them when they're learning a new system is that a little bit concerning these are the things that you start you know the wheels start turning and you start really harping on as we get closer to football season but uh I said it all year long I I want a defense that's more aggressive like last year was just such a disaster from the standpoint of not being able to make game-changing plays um turn the ball over get three and outs and so you needed a new voice you needed fresh energy they're getting that in Andy aalos they're also getting a very different new scheme that hopefully they're up to the challenge and up to the task for um but yeah that was just something that that caught my attention a lot more press coverage this upcoming year and those Corners are going to have to be ready to play and play play at a high level um because they're going to have big time responsibilities in this new defense when we come back a new commit for the 2025 class and it's a flip from Baylor so that's always exciting it's lock down horn frogs your team every day before I do that though I do want to tell you about eBay Motors listen I'm not ashamed to admit it I don't know a lot about cars so I need to I need to know that I can trust what I'm buying if I'm trying to buy a part for my vehicle I want make sure it fits the car I'll make sure it's the you know right part for what I'm driving you can't mess around with your ride you don't want to waste money you don't want to waste your time so use eBay Motors they have a guaranteed fit program so you can uh put the make and model of your car in the system you can put the part in the shopping cart and it will tell you right away yes that's what you need or no don't buy that don't move forward with it eBay Motors millions of parts for your MVP they have parts for all makes and models you want to know more about it you can check out ebaymotors.com win every time with parts that fit your ride don't waste time and money going elsewhere eBay Motors millions of parts for your MVP so a new commit for the 2025 class Brody Whitley uh from Monroe Louisiana nville College or excuse me Neville uh High School which is work of Turpin went to school a few years back so that's exciting that connection there is really good uh Brody's a defensive lineman he was originally committed to Baer he's a three star Prospect according to 247 Sports and uh he's 65 250 pounds the thing that stood out to me when I started watching his highlight T some versatility and that there's some reps where he's a true kind of standup Edge rusher but also plays a lot in the four technique head up on the tackle and uh it looks like in this defense I have the emphasis on slanting one way or the other getting inside blowing up plays behind the line of scrimmage getting to the quarterback all those things are what you want from those game wrecking defensive lineman so he joins the 2025 football class and that makes uh total that makes seven defensive linemen now that's a little it's it's not defense linean in the sense of what we saw with Joe Gillespie and those three down fronts because Chad woodfork is technically a defensive lineman be that edge player you know more of a um that stud linebacker position so kind of an outside linebacker slash pass rusher same thing with Jared Martin from California John Shel from Columbus who's currently actually an inside linebacker in in high school but Floyd gri defensive lineman from Spring Texas um and now also Brody waitley uh Blake robinet defens line from All Saints and then kelen Abrams a linebacker slash kind of edge Ruster as well who has done some great things at doto so they're building a good mix here I think of guys that fit this new position that can rush off the edge but also players that can play in the interior and I don't know what the plan will be for Brody yet I'm not sure if they'll try to add some um beef to his frame and get him to a place where he can play more hand in the ground defensive end but he's showing that he can do a little bit both so you know that's cool that they have that ability to sort of figure that out when he gets on campus and I'm sure they already have a vision for what they want him to be but uh a really impressive offer list like not I said a three star player um not necessarily A can't miss Blue Chip Prospect but I think the the key to kind of hone in on here is you you listen to the schools that have offered him and you see this is a really talented dude U maou Arkansas of course Baylor there with Dave random maou's done a really great job um with Eli derkowitz and they' brought in some great players recently Nebraska um Mississippi State LSU in his own backyard there so super impressive list of schools that are interested um and I think there's a ton of potential there with him being 65 250 and kind of playing on different spots on the defensive line showing that versatility there's a lot of different ways that that could go for him when he makes it on campus so H Big Time news Landing another 2025 player TSU kind of quietly continuing to add some names to this class and a heavy defensive emphasis this year which is cool but also some big- time Playmakers on offense as well and just got that big flip from Adam Shel uh who was originally committed well he was originally committed to Baylor then Oklahoma State and then flipped to TCU um another thing I want to mention a few of you were talking about some of the new staff hires because Todd Graham and Dana hogerson are now on staff at TCU they're on staff as analyst um Dana is gonna be working with the offense and just kind of evaluating like what are their strengths what are their weaknesses and Todd's going to be working with the offense in some ways as well like scouting defenses and saying okay here's how defenses would defend you guys um so I think overall these are smart hires by coach dyes but a few people have mentioned Todd Graham not exactly an easy dude to work with um got run out of his job at Hawaii as a head coach because the players were complaining about poor treatment and it didn't get covered super heavily because I mean I guess just because it was University of Hawaii but that got ugly man like the the government got involved I mean the schools run by the state so um The Players took their complaints to the legislature if I remember correctly and there was like a whole uh session about it and so he left before things got worse but it was a bad deal um and Todd's never been known as like a people person now I will say like as an analyst he's not going to be working that much with the players especially not in the Hands-On capacity I mean this is truly a job where he is scouting and that's what he's doing uh Dana hogerson also not the easiest person to work with Andy aalos um I mean didn't do super well as a head coach at Boise State but I think the thing most people are concerned about is again some rumors and Rumblings of mistreatment of players players not being happy guys leaving the team because they just weren't interested in dealing with him anymore so I think it's a fair question to ask is Sunny Dykes building like a Suicide Squad of coaches so to speak um and I would just say other than Andy I mean I think a lot of these guys are in off the field roles so that's a key here and also so I mean Sunny is a very laid-back guy or at least that's what he kind of gives off I don't know how he is in the meeting rooms and all that but um he does seem like the type of Personality that can manage a lot of strong personalities and I hope that's the case right I hope that he can be a true CEO type of figure and you know tell those guys like listen this is how it is this is what we're gonna do and not let those dudes push him around but yes certainly some interesting hires personality-wise and it it's something to watch as those guys have never been known as people that are easy to work with um just how they adjust moving forward when we come back I'll get some of your thoughts from the last episode it's lockd down horn frogs your team every day one of our great sponsors is FanDuel FanDuel if you are wanting to bet on Sports there's sponsor of the lockdown Network another name to know and I might talk about this more next week uh you know Johnny hod just kind of had a tough year last year but we've heard some good things about him at least initial reports in Camp now that's kind of a crowded linebacker room now Caleb alarms or Shad Banks Johnny Hodes there's a few guys that I think could play that kind of inside backer role but you know Johnny there's a place for him he's a he's good in run support um he's a physical tackler putting him in space covering people that was not a fun experience last season but hopefully that's something that Andy AOS can kind of mitigate through how he sets up his defense and the scheme that he uses uh some audience reaction Doug says adding Todd and Dana as analyst is terrific great experience to add um but I last when you said Sunny's free time is up for what exactly the new GM rooll college football is changing uh and then he talked about the potential toxicity probably butchered that pronunciation between you know Todd and his allegations of MRE players at Hawaii Dana having issues at Houston and other places and Andy who was difficult to work with uh at his last stop so yeah I mean those are all valid points I kind of addressed that in the last segment um as far as free time goes I think what I meant by that was maybe this allows Sunny to get his hands involved more in the offense and I hope that's the case um now he's been a he's been more hands-off lately and I know there's so much more now that these guys are doing as head coaches but as an offensive coach I would just like to see him have his imprint more on the game plan on a weekly basis but you know we'll see how he approaches that this year and if he has any different thoughts on it as they try to bounce back from a disappointing season last year and then Vince prior who's had some really good thoughts lately um he's not a sunny dyes fan right now he's basically like what did you expect him to say as far as his comments after fall Camp didn't he say similar things at the start of last year um he has always had a pretty good read after the bad things happen which at that point is obvious he didn't know the team was ready for Colorado and they got embarrassed they got punched in the mouth and then he talked about how I compared uh coach dyes to Nick Sabin well the I wasn't really comparison I was just saying you know Sunny's adding a lot of members to his staff and that's what the best programs in the country have done over the past few years they've had these huge coaching staffs that have a lot of different roles and analysts that have jobs you know scouting jobs that type of thing um and yeah I mean you're right like he's obviously gonna say a lot of positive stuff in these media sessions I still think it's worth talking about and trying to kind of get some Insight from but he's probably not going to go out there and say that you know they're not prepared and they look bad and all those things um but I think he has done a nice job of taking responsibility for what happened last year and ultimately though the proof is gonna be on the field and we'll see how that shakes out in a few weeks it's a lockdown horn frogs we'll back on Monday it's your team we do it here every day
