uh it's hard to pitch this right as we come to the end of the show today so we'll we'll do it as uh kind of normally as we can it was hugely saddening Danny um relatively recently when we got the news it's Fen yor and Ericson um was terminally ill um he revealed way back in January that he had pancreatic cancer and it was approaching the end of his life um indeed I I remember seeing images of him at uh anfield because he got his wish he could uh lead A team out in a match that had been arranged at at anfield H and he managed your beloved Liverpool I'm going to get your thoughts on on Sven the man very shortly Danny because you have memories of him of course in your time playing uh for England but the same Spen yor and Ericson has given an emotional goodbye on film um there there is a a film a new film about him due to be released on Amison Brie on Friday during which um Sven says he had a good life and he tells viewers don't be sorry smile and says thank you to everybody you worked with coaches players crowds has been fantastic this gives you a rough idea of what to expect in the movie on Friday I have a good life maybe too [Music] good you have to pay for it I have 10 Miss calls for my sister dad's in the emergency room not good yeah it's cancer I have and that's it but don't be sorry smile remember the good times what an adventure sad but it's beautiful wow don't be sorry smile sad but it's beautiful it's very touching Danny isn't it yeah he's a warm Guys fan I really liked him he um he treated us like men and expected respect back for it um but although he was warm and charismatic he he had a ruthless side to him um I remember once I don't know where I got the stupidity to question his decision on he left me off the bench it was in the Germany when when we beat them 5-1 I thought I'd been playing well and deserved at least to be on the bench the team was pretty good obviously anyway I was left in the stand with three or four others so I asked him about it and it was the first time I saw that side of him and he basically said to me you're not trained well enough you don't train hard enough I don't know what why you don't train hard you need to do better that was it done I was like whoa but it gave me a right kick when I was not expecting it and on the flip side he he he called me when I got called up to to the squad for 2002 World Cup he called me himself um told me how well I'd done and deserved it Etc you know Stevie had dropped out and he I was his first choice and made me feel a million dollars but probably one of the best stories he was very approachable we used to play away from Wembley um Old Trafford Worley marrier and at the time I was it was before I did IVF with my ex-wife and you know when the timeing is right I was away with team but I lived in the Northwest so it was only half an hour hour from the hotel so I thought do I sneak away or do I just go and see him so I thought I do the right thing so I knocked on his door I said look this is the predicament I'm in and he said it's not a predicament he said get in your car go home be back for breakfast at 10 o'clock in the morning that was it that was that's how he was job done yeah yeah yeah you know a nice approach and a nice touch but he he gave all play is that ability to approach him and talk to him about things so you didn't go off and let him down and do it sure do you know what I mean but he was a good guy good guy I mean Simon without been too mobid about it I say was he's still with us what one certainty in life for all of us is death absolutely um many of us don't know when the end comes SP spend does he's got a rough idea and I would like to think if that's going to be the same for me while I'm still in this Mortal coil um I would like to approach it the way he's approached yeah absolutely I mean it seems to replicate the way he's lived his life in terms of that Outlook I mean I met him years ago uh in in my boardroom at Palace when he was at the height of his fame or some of his notoriety um I knew his agent at all still um quite well and his and son Jason um and so I I always found him to be quite a charismatic fell um and an engaging fell I mean obviously we see the period of time that he managed and we can look back at that when I make the observations about G South Gates being knocked out of tournaments he gets knocked out of tournaments by people like Portugal and um Brazil yeah and those draws didn't go Ronaldinho yeah and maybe if he' had the same sort of draws he'd be we'd be looking at Sven go Ericson being somebody I think he changed aspects of English football I think there were certain things that he didn't do well um and and and that has to be honest about that but I think there's something and obviously going to nots count all that Saga wasn't great but I think he's one of those football people that sort of transcends the game he is Sven isn't he he known as Sven yes and it broke the mold and it was something interesting to do to bring him an overseas manager whatever way you you look at that experiment I think there were times and there were games that you take away from that it's specifically and explicitly the game that Danny talks about where he was not involved in when he beat the Germans um I couldn't go to that one because I was in Spain I wasn't allowed to leave the country at the time but um my brother and my father went and the atmosphere other mates of mine went there um and just phenomenal so I think it's it's something very sad about listening to someone I mean I I have a fear of dying I don't like talking about death it's something I have a great dread of so I kind of watch it with a kind of sort of awe and a sort of modling interest at the same time as wanting to shy away from it I I admire him hugely admire him for his approach in at this particular stage in his life he's always been like that he when one of the big stories broke I was in one of the squads and it it all went out all quickly over the news and then we were together and we thought oh my God what's he going to do about and he called a meeting straight away and he called a meeting and he he apologized in effect in his own way but addressed it with all the lads quickly you know this is what's happened this bit's true this isn't it's not a great example I do a part you know like moving it but put it out there so all the lads didn't stop doing this and he just got me within an hour of it coming out we had a meeting and he fronted it and the lad's kind of walked out going what what a guy it kind of lives he's living his life the last segment of it in the way that he lived his life at the at the peak of his Fame and recognizability at the time ironically I had Ora Johnson working for me so did you yeah I did yeah what sing phones no she was she was the face of the business she was the face of the business I remember that I I I I do remember that Danny having worked with him and being close to him to a degree because you got all your am I right you got all your England camps oners fan yeah um this movie it might be a tough War watch for you will you watch it probably yeah I will actually I will actually but I'll smile and think of all the the funny moments and the good moments cuz it I only remember good with svan even the kick up the backside um he was always well intentioned he was always great to be around some funny team talks he's just a a good guy you know you wanted to play for him and work hard for him and I I think it'll be very well received Danny thanks very much for that and thanks for today Mr Murphy as always Simon uh you and I we reconvene at 10: tomorrow so Sven as he says don't be sorry smile exactly yeah we'll try and do that Sven we'll try and do that we're at one Jim White and Simon Jordan Monday to Friday mornings from 10 on amm on da via the talk sport app and on your smart speaker talk sport
