brother tickets 801 575 Zone 801 575 Zone DJ PK it's 975 The Zone we are joined right now by Riley Jensen college football expert and mental performance Coach Riley good morning hey what's happening fellas college football is kicking off what are you going to be looking for in games everybody all the the local teams here Utah BYU Utah State the three full subdivision teams are all playing money games at home they all ought to win they all to win comfortably so let's start with the youths what do you want to see in that game assuming the final score is you know lopsided and decisive the way money games are supposed to be they aren't always but the way they're supposed to be what are you looking for what do you want to see what are you checking out in this game um I'm I'm really looking at at at keii I'm looking at cam Rising I'm looking at some of these guys that have been injured to look for um them to kind of knock some rust off and hopefully you know by the end of the second quarter couple of drives that just feel really really efficient when it comes to the University of Utah because you know everybody always just goes oh yeah well you had an ACL oh yeah you know this guy had a concussion it's it's not that easy to come back from and it takes a couple of hits and it takes a couple of things mentally for you to be able to shake that off and feel like okay I'm ready to go so I'm looking I'm looking for them to be able to to kind of knock some of the cobwebs off and and be able to be efficient in their offense in the first game against Southern Utah yeah that's all this game is about it's about keithy and rising and then cheering for Alex Smith other than that uh move on to the next one true true I mean I mean is is there anything in football besides quarterbacks PK I mean you know not in this situation uh because of him being out and keithy being out almost two years in terms of action because he he was in the first conference game two years back and then that's it and get it over with and everybody have a good time and then move on my thought for you is we're talking about expectations for the youths it's either playoff or it's not that's the only thing if it's playoff they've had a successful season they'll see what they do if they get there and what they do and if they don't make it no matter what the circumstances it's a bitter disappointment simple as that no I I think you're right and I think that's the sign of a good program I mean when I've talked to my friends and when I've talked to you know young players that participated in my old Camp Mountain West Elite and they played it at P5 schools P4 schools now I guess is what we're calling them um if you don't go to to the playoffs or to to compete for some sort of national championship or one of the one of the big four bowl games those teams don't feel they feel like the season was a disaster and I I think that's a compliment to the program that Kyle's built I think that's a compliment to the program that is here at the University Utah is there are high expectations and I really do feel like if they if they don't win the conference or go to the playoffs like you're talking about it will be there there'll be a lot of people that are disappointed but I mean pressure is a privilege that's kind of the fun that's kind of the fun part about a team like this if you were offered the UT or the field in the Big 12 who would you take I would take the yous I think they have a tough one right away at Oklahoma State and then I just think I this could be perception and I know that the Big 12 is a step up clearly from the Mountain West or from you know any of the group of five conferences but it's not a step up um from the Pack 12 and the way that the University of Utah plays is not typical Pack 12 football this is power football and I don't the Pack 12 the Big 12 I don't get the impression that they're the real physical teams and I think there's going to be teams in this conference that that really have some difficulty with with kind of the power the defense and the physicality of of the University Utah football BYU doesn't announce it I think it'll be rett's laugh um what are you looking to see and how important is it whoever it might be that they get out there and show well well I think it's important whenever you're a quarterback in your first game you want to you want to feel like you show well and I don't know why when I was playing if I if I didn't play well against a what would be a onea school I know we don't call it that now but if I didn't if I wasn't really sharp and if I didn't play well I felt I felt embarrassed I didn't I I didn't feel good about the way that I was playing of course you know you win the game and you get through it but if you didn't feel like you were sharp it doesn't feel good I think we'll see both quarterbacks I think redoff will start but I think both of them want to show well and and show what they're capable of and show that they're capable of putting their team in the end zone I mean that's that's the bottom line right and the way that the offense played last year um you know the lack of sacks last year from the defense I think those are the two things that you're looking for with BYU you want you want BYU to be sharp offensively you want you want to see that they can run the ball you want the quarterbacks to be sharp and then you really want to see this team and last year was not typical of Jay Hill teams you really want to see this BYU team get after quarterbacks and really get get to the quarterback when they get a chance when you talk to people and I know that because of your age you know coaches and have conversations with them are we gonna be talking about somebody at the end of the season a big star who we're not talking about now is somebody gonna emerge anywhere in the state I don't care is there some player you're looking at and and the rest of us are all sleeping on him well I don't know if they I don't I don't know who's sleeping on this guy because I think we all think he's pretty good but the defensive tackle for the University of Utah he's the first one that comes to my to my head is is Keanu tanasa yeah I mean he's made huge strides since last season he's quick he's physical he's Relentless he he should have a great season and from what I'm hearing through the great Bine he's one of the best leaders that the University of Utah has and I think you're just going to see Keanu kananavasa as like a household name one of those big- time names on the defense defensive line from the University of Utah when we go forward so I don't know I don't know that I'm picking something that's like really out there um I also think that um uh I forget his first name is it is it keano Hill that changed from wide receiver to tight air yeah I think I think he's someone that we need to keep our eye on because from what I'm hearing he has like not lost his speed with the size that he has now so he's put on 20 to 25 pounds and he hasn't lost his speed now does that translate to being able to block and and be able to catch the ball I don't know but I'm I'm not sure that you always have to be a tight end that that is a great blocker anymore I think I think there's a place in college football for someone who can be a great tight end who really is just a matchup nightmare where you know a linebacker is too slow to cover him and a safety is too small to hang with him and so that's those are the two matchups that I think or or the two players that I think might really stick out um to the listeners out there that are thinking about their teams how cool and unusual is that Riley dropping a pair of Kos they have the same first name that that's all you need to know you that is weird o right there that's I mean that's how I memorized it I mean you know the CTE and some of the things that I have trouble with if I if I don't have like something like that to remember it's really hard for me to do that kind of stuff and plus tasu every time he sees me he says hello well that's because that's because I I think great recognized great I don't know where I got that from but I think great recognized great he's very personable young man isn't he yes I mean for I've never met him but everything that I hear about this guy and I've heard from five or six different sources about just what what a great person this guy is yeah but the cool part is he's a great football player too I mean uh you know when you could do both of those that's hard he's an emerging star once tuna leaves he'll be the next household name along the defensive line no question that no question that is what is it's looking like because I believe he's just a sophomore although who knows with the NCA restoring eligibility four years later who knows what what that means but I think that's what he is at this point you can play like seven eight years and and collect nil and there's there's some fun things going on and retire right and then retire retire as a 25y old you know yeah we're going to have college football guys announcing their retirement right it used to be it used to be that a 25-year-old was a guy that was a returned missionary with a gray shirt and a red shirt now it's that you just got a lot of Eligibility back and you were paid nil for a few years and so yeah I made a statement uh with Scotty we were talking about Boise or the field now he hates Boise so he took the field but I'm taking Boise every time right I don't see how you don't I mean last year was a down year for them the coach got fired and what happened I believe they won the league didn't they I I think they did yeah did so and they've got an American fort quarterback no l who who by the way is a really fun athlete to watch he's got a little brother that plays wide receiver at Lehigh and he is he's a really fun quarterback to watch I don't know it's if it's because I was a six- foot quarterback but I just I'd love to see smaller guys go and compete and battle and actually win some spots it'll be fun to watch him I'll be cheering I'll I'll I'll I'll be cheering for Madson up there at boy state for sure this year your Aggies have an interterm coach who had to introduce himself to the offense because why would they know the brand new defensive coordinator and they've got I think plenty of difficulty built into that schedule USC and Utah back toback so a one and two start seems highly likely and Washington State and Boise State further down the road what are you expecting out of your agies what's the best case and worst case number for them well so when you were gone I think you were sick for a couple days and and and PK and I talked a little bit about this like it is stacked against them and I think I think there's two things that can happen one is that they pull together and it becomes us against the world or it really really fractures into some really difficult situations I just don't think that schedule I mean you're talking about University of Utah USC boisey State and Washington State on the schedule I mean that just doesn't I mean that's just a hard hard thing to overcome I think if you're Utah State best case scenario is you get to six wins and you get to go to a bowl game worst case scenario is this thing falls apart because the hard part about this is coaches and players don't have any stability right now I mean you have an interim coach you don't know that you're going to be the next head coach you don't know that there's not people being interviewed at every single game that you coach this year and I think it's just a really really difficult situation because you know these coaches have to they have to reach out and they have to network and yeah it's nice to have a job for the season but if all of a sudden like things go really bad in conference and they know they're not going to be B eligible those last those last five four games of a year they're just going to be on the phone looking for jobs they're not really going to be as concerned about coaching and developing and all those things if if they're not in a good spot so I it it's hard for me to predict a really successful season I'm hoping for it I'm hoping these players can Galvanize together but man it just seems like a lot to overcome yeah that that's an excellent point I was thinking about that too if this thing gets South it's sort of gonna be like every man for himself at that point and that's a that's worst case scenario you can't win college football if you're playing for yourself right any former college football player that's Had a Bad season and guys started being individuals I mean it it it goes It goes south fast and in a competitive world with a lot of egos you get the defense pitted against the offense you get individuals pitted against individuals and then you have coaches with instability I mean it's a recipe for disaster so I'm hoping for the best it doesn't if if it doesn't go well I I I don't know that you can blame the team or the coaches it's just a hard situation it's a really hard situation our question for uh you fans right now best case worst case you want to put numbers on it or you're with PK just just get to the playoffs I don't even care if you're 12 and0 11 and one 10 and two just get to the playoffs I don't I don't care about the record you know I think best case scenario is you get to the playoffs I think worst case scenario is you don't get to the playoffs like it's really true I mean you you talk to to guys that have played for Oklahoma State you talk to people that played for LSU you talk to people that have played for Florida like if they're not in a big bowl game that has a lot of attention we shoot we saw last year with Georgia and Florida State people were freaking they were done they're like we're not in the playoff get the freak out of here go go yeah just wholesale passing the bull games you got that was still an orange that was still an orange bull right yeah yeah yeah like y get the freak out of here that's what they said and of course they were talking about leaving Miami and going down to the keys right I mean GTFO let's [Laughter] go so I don't know it's it's an interesting thing that's going on in college football and because of nil and the transfers it's I do I my heart and I know nobody nobody's heart goes out to coaches but it is really hard to like build team in this in this new world and it it will take a different type of Coach to be able to handle and massage these new situations um yeah and we've seen that with coaches uh and we've seen it really in basketball too coaches in football with Sav coaches are like yeah I'm out I'm not doing this yeah so other team you're playing has the same problem so that part's a wash I think it's more does the individual want to do it I mean it may be hard for you to build that team but the same for the whoever's across the sideline I think it's what coaches are willing to do I mean right now you you literally have to recruit and pay players every year because they're all on one-year contracts and say hey if you don't treat me right get me the freak out of here see laugh own to stay on the same team that we've been talking about it's like hey man if you don't pay and if you're not treating me like how I feel I need to be treated and I think that's the hard part about college is there's like there's no like contracts you know what I mean like at least with a pro you got a four-year you know you got a three-year deal with a fourth year option where they can't they can't really leave right now it's like hey man I don't like you you don't like me I'm out you know and uh that's hard that's hard to build a team and that's where I think it's different right now than pro football that there's not any um there's not any structure to to how the payments happen yeah well if there is Trent Williams is over there on the sideline like uh restructure how the payments happen or I'm not playing right well you know guys I'm I'm behind the scenes on a lot of different things like there's even volleyball girls that are going to be like seniors in different programs that are like yeah we're yeah maybe we won't get paid but we want to restructure so that we we only have to practice this many times a week that we only have to do that so they're even like making demands in different ways that way like hey if you want me to come back for my senior year I get Mondays off you know and and these coaches have to deal with it and they have to figure it out so then you have coaches like Randy they're like forget this I'm out of here right and I'm not I'm not going to deal with this or or you have coaches that are like yeah dude I'll do this I can deal with this I'll freaking figure out a way to pay them I'll figure out a way to do this because they're because they're younger and they're hungry but at a certain point there's certain coaches that have been doing it a certain way they're not willing to do that Riley thank you very much we appreciate it appreciate you guys have have a great day Raley Jensen college football expert and mental performance coach when we come back everything you missed in this show next stay with us it's game week for home for the best coverage of Utah football is live on air online and on the KSL Sports app this is 975 the KSL Sports s n sler radi headlines part you by Tim Dolly moner Southtown find your new monster the south end of the valley at Tim Dolly moner Southtown that's Tim doll mon to Southtown in Sandy been talking about a lot of different stuff this morning PK including the youths best case worst case scenario you've never been less interested in records for a guy who's been sitting here thinking all right who gets to 10 wins and has a good season for the youths there's never been a playoff before the rule changes have changed everything yeah and it's and and the circumstances of rising coming back uh for his seventh year the stars of aligned literally yeah yeah yeah abut back he's back you can't really point to next year everybody wants to be in the playoffs so if 11 and two gets you in the playoff great yeah I'll sit out the football season if these guys are playing for the UTS next year this football season he's in big enough for the both of us one of us has to go two years ago Rising set up sat up there and said yeah this should be his last home game and as it turns out yeah so and Rising has listed uh the odds I'm looking at odds for Heisman uh what is he 28 to1 something like that uh no 75 to1 75 to one and faf is listed as yeah SE faf is 28 to1 okay because I would think that if any big 12 quarterback makes it were to win it it'd be faid assuming Brennan takes advantage of what's there and realizes I've got a really good quarterback and I got a really good receiver and this is what we do well so let's Chuck the ball around all over the field uh so uh and they've got opportunities and the good thing about it is the UTS play enough good teams they don't play a lot but they play enough they do play enough right they got the two they'll get somebody in the conference title and then as you've been saying there's going to be some somebody who surprises and that team will provide a fourth quality opponent right I don't know that TCU is going to be really good maybe they are but I do think they have a great chance of having a good record when they show up in at rcle Stadium okay at Stanford winnable game and they could lose it they go to Stanford and lose but that's a winnable game Long Island's their money game UCF at home at smu's winnable at Kansas got to pick him to lose that and then home to Houston now they may come rolling in here three and three but I think this pretty decent chance are five and one I don't know I wouldn't bet on it you're going three and three they're going to lose to Stanford and Kansas and mess up another game somewhere but if it's the UCF Maybe UCF is the team that emerges that and I think that if the and I've been saying this of the team of the all the teams that didn't get first place votes or didn't get ranked UCF is the one M yeah yeah and we've had other people come on the show and say that too there's a little consensus building that among the second tier teams they're the best right I'm going and KJ Jefferson's getting a lot of run I'm going this the teams who aren't expected that next tier it's UCF one Iowa State 2 well they along with TCU all three of those teams are on the youth schedule so one of them ought to pull it together I guess we'll watch them play each other to see who the Nom is the thing about it is UCF is at the last game so you are who you are by then either that's going to be a fairly easy game or it's goingon to be really there's so many scenarios UCF could be great and they could and the youths could have to win it to get in the Big 12 title game traveling across country in a short week or UCF proved to be a paper tiger the quarterback is hurt and the youths have already clinched the Big 12 title game birth I think they will have clinched the birth by then but they'll be playing for uh just to make sure that there still could potentially be a lot of stake because at that point you could be playing for well we're really good and we'll get in even if we lose the following week so they they'll have a ton to play for I would think either way I would be St if they didn't have a lot to play for at that game and that's one thing I've read about a lot of teams this season that there would be more drama late in this season because even the teams that know they're in are still playing to get a home game instead of a road game or to get a buy instead of yeah so there'll be something on the plate right for all these teams and that's fun I look forward to that game I think it's uh six o'clock our time the day after Thanksgiving right yeah yeah yeah it's a Black Friday game yeah and I think because I think it's an 8:00 Florida start so they'll be sitting around all day it is an 8:00 Florida start yeah it's already tagged for big fox yeah oh I'm fired up for that game for sure yeah no doubt about it they got a fifth year senior quarterback there and cam Rising is two years older than him right I'm look at the list of old quarterbacks right now yeah yeah yeah KJ Jefferson's a 23y old fifth year senior right yeah I I yeah I already know that yeah other things we have discussed today we had John Talon national college football writer for 247 Sports and author of new book the price and he tracks the massive Evolution that led to the demise of the Pack 12 and the multiple reorganizations of the Big 12 it's not that you have to have the money it's the other guys have it and you want it you're afraid of what'll happen if you don't get it well yeah because you want to keep your job if you're an athletic director just say and so you have to have the best that you could put out there and if some school is making double the amount of money that you're going to make well that's going to be more difficult for you to compete and so yeah so it became a a push from a rush to get as much cash as possible and it and TV networks and all that stuff and you're and they set the standard so I I get it I there was it's like uh Panic it was Panic time we gotta go and I don't think anybody thinks wow this is what's best but it is what it is yeah you think SC thinks this is what's best for us but is it best for the game and sports to have the Pack 12 dissolve no I think they would say that it's best to have all these Coast to Coast leagues the acc's coast to coast the Big 12 essentially is I mean Arizona's not on the coast but it's four time zones well they're only two hours away from uh uh the beach down there in Mexico Rocky Point less than two hours two hours to the Pacific maybe it is yeah Rocky Point was always Arizona's Beach uh it's a little it's closer than going San Diego LA right uh no I and I and and just for sentimental reasons and for tradition I mean certainly all that other stuff that you bring up is vitally important too but just for just for all of us people who've been alive to to think about and to shoot for the Rose Bowl and to play the way it was those those seem like black and white TV days black and white TVs there's so many people that do not know what you're talking about right but don't they seem like that oh yeah they long gone yeah they disappeared over the horizon just I mean not black and white TVs but I mean just the those were the days and those games were played and and even though it's just a few years back but what are you going to do man nothing yeah there's nothing you can do either adapt you as a consumer you can get into it or not uh and if your team is good you're going to get into it or you can go more to the NFL is NFL has changed rules but it really hasn't changed the premise of what the NFL is yeah there've been a lot of changes I mean the NFL's deal is that there's just teams you wake up and like what what are the Tennessee Titans who are the Indianapolis Colts the Las Vegas Raiders what is going on that's where they do their changes yeah but nobody does that with the who are the Los Angeles Dodgers no it's been long enough and they've been there 60 years and built their history right and for and there's a whole generation of fans out there who think the Indianapolis Colts are normal because that's that's 40 years now that's my point yeah that's 40 years that that'll go but the dissolving of the Pack 12 will be there forever yeah but then people say what's the Southwest Conference what's the Pack 12 there'll be a generation that doesn't yeah but the Southwest didn't really dissolve in the manner that the Pack 12 did they just kind of created a new thing largely with the existing teams four of the for four of the nine it was a change but it wasn't that big a deal for five of the nine well Arkansas oped it out I mean it was a big change but they did it on their own right for four of the nine it was tragedy and we're way over here you're over there where you just got to go a few hours and you got the SEC and everything else blah blah blah we lived in California so that was our thing and in Texas that was their thing yeah and we're hours and hours from everybody else and now it's gone Up in Smoke good interview with Allen about what he expects or John talty Why didn't it say Allen John talty joins us next year I don't know where that came from John talty joined us and he has said that uh he thinks that private Equity is coming and he does think that there's going to come a point how it'll happen when it'll happen but the big Brands will want more money and the smaller brands that have been in the right League from the start are going to get less when that day comes for Purdue and Vanderbilt and South Carolina and Indiana it's coming oh I expect tagu to just to invite Alabama to the NFL tag Liu yeah random lawyers you wish you didn't know their name come on that's a fun name to say tag yeah tag Abu what's it what's the guy's name now you know I I can't think of it right now I can see his face husky guy roare gell rer gell that husky guy isn't he Roger I think he wants your attention why he said the Husky guy that's all I know he's he got a lot of mass Ro Helio yeah but Paul tagliaboo that was tagliaboo is a fun name to say it's like Francisco an elf oh that's a fun name it's a fun name to say Steve Young wants Trent Williams in the hold out and go win the Super Bowl Trent wants more money good then Steve give him some of your money you're you're a capital venturist yeah do it I sure there'd be 31 teams lining up to file some kind of Claim about that hey getting around the salary cap private Equity is coming into that League very soon I'm sure they just approve that 10 nil for the pros yeah they can already do that call end GGC his private Equity Firm is going to very quickly be 49 H GGC is that what it is it's the name of it yeah that's a lot of letters H GC it wouldn't surprise me if they're the 49ers like partner H GGC where's the Y I don't know djpk it's 975 The Zone your feedback is next and it's all over almost here don't go nowhere join hands and Scotty today from 1 to three for the cougar preview show brought to you by beehive meals DJ and PK is time for your feedback everything you've had to say about today's show and you have had plenty to say about today's show on the topic of Britain cvy making the Eagles initial roster for the first time how sweet is that and many people found that very sweet it is it was largely unanimous yes yes the guy is UNH hatable in fact he's lovable you cannot do anything but love him that's dope David Utah football GM says oh I love dope whom are you cheering for in tomorrow's Utah versus S game hope that helps he always finishes with hope that helps who are you cheering for what it's an overmatch it's a money game it's a scrimage and there's three things to look forward tomorrow keithy rising and everybody cheers for Alex Smith Steve what a backhanded compliment do you think before you tweet geez you're such an ass hat what that doesn't make any sense that's an angry elf right there is an angry elf I agree I agree why people can get one response out of me I'm not going back and forth on Twitter I just said not sure what assumptions you're making most people took it what it for what it was good news I I honestly don't get that at all I sent him a little clip you Steve pretty sweet Mitch so excited Wy I hope he returns one for TD this year yeah he did say it's the fact that you felt the need to add verbage like for the first time or undersized things that don't need to be said in order to give the compliment or good news see it was for the first time the first two years he got waved you got the call you got waved like oh well we'll put you on the track practice squad and then you don't know if you're making it back now I think the second time he had a pretty good idea and make it back but nonetheless he had to go through it well he did have a good idea because he had opportunities he he told me that but he still had to go through the stress of it even though he had the opportunity right well he had to decide what do I do and and these other teams they're sweet talking but when you get there what's it really going to be like and how much of a chance all that stuff went into it and he doesn't have to go through that this time you're on the team this is great news I know unless you're an ass hat I don't get it is that some mute fan who thinks you don't like him yes that's how I took it okay that's what I assume yeah wow dude come on which is funny because you know you're in this line of work you're only like 10 minutes away from a Cougar Fan sure you hate hate the Cougars and love the youths we're happy and excited for Britain cvy making the team and continuing to live his dream he's a local kid he treats everybody like they're gold and and we we've seen this because when we interview him at that football Foundation golf tournament not only is he super nice to us but we're sitting out on this deck and we can watch him walk around and greet other people yeah you just know he's running into some body's dad who knew him from the neighborhood when he was in junior high I mean you can just see the reactions he's getting he's known these people years down in the hard of BYU land and they all embra and they all like him even though he's a you I know I know yeah and you can like tell when he shakes somebody hands or hugs like he knows them and he likes them and he pulls zero big time on zero he's the ultimate transcender the Rivalry M yeah yeah I can't think of a better example of a transcender Judy okay okay higher profile with football and more recent right but jud's a good example he transcends it there's no question you f still like colani they struggle to a degree with that though too current yeah because yeah he'll be you'll be playing them yeah put him in a conference game probably Chang his equation a little bit Yeah except
