'We Haven't Got Justice' Sawsan Choucair Lost 6 Family Members in Grenfell Tower Fire

welcome back to Good Morning Britain just take a look at the faces here next to us we're going to take a moment to remember the victims of Grenville 72 lives lost 72 entirely avoidable deaths and the age range is from an unborn baby to an 84 year old woman every single person you see here every victim of course was somebody's dad mom brother sister grandparent relative friend or neighbor all mourned and all killed in a fire that was a result of Decades of failure by successive governments dishonest construction manufacturers and a chronic lack of leadership and an attitude of complacency at the London fire brigade well that's the damning verdict from the final inquiry into the greml disaster s years after that horrific Blaze and this was the reaction to that final report from the families of those victims seven years I just explained to my mothers there is a Justice there is justice but at the end seven years passed and we still have no justice and we have to fight again I don't know how many years going to be take we didn't have the right treatment we were discriminated and we were a minority but we are a strong minority who have the rights everyone is just passing the blame to each other is that fair that 72 lives died you know that night from that night I've not been the same person mentally I'm I'm messed up suffer from PTSD this inquiry was forced on us we had no say we were not consulted and like I say to some it gives answers and to some it doesn't do anything except it's put that extra nail in the coffin as they say or in the hearts well so Sanuk lost six members of her family in the blaze her mom sria her sister nardia and Nadia's husband BM and their three children her nieces Fatima Mna and Zab no other family lost more members in the fire and soan joins us uh now um it's been seven years since that terrible um fateful night um and we had the inquiry report yesterday but of course you know for you other family members every day has been a terrible day and since that um tragedy how did you feel yesterday when um the statement was made in Parliament and the inquiry chair read out his findings and talked about dishonesty and incompetence devastated because uh it's been a long time we're waiting for justice we haven't got Justice and now we they come up with this report you know cu the inquiry it's took them so long and you know nothing's going to bring our family back no matter what you know no I mean you're very brave to come and talk to us this morning but I'm sure every morning you wake up with the thoughts of the six beloved family members that you've lost H could it bring any comfort to think maybe at last the devastation of this is finally recognized have you felt that you've been in a sense shouting into the wind for the last seven years we've been shouting so long and we've been fighting all of us to get Justice and until now we haven't it's each one puts the blame on each other and no one's telling the truth and what happens after that it's makes us really like you know are we ever going to get there are there ever is there ever going to be Justice for us what would you like what would justice mean to you it'll be great It'll be such great news but what what sorry that was a very bad question H how do you define justice what do you want well we want prosecutions to be done first of all that's number one our main point is prosecutions until now it's took them so long they haven't even done it you know cuz of this inquiry so it's LED them so it's LED them to like go through all this all this time s years on where is the prosecutions but the police say that from now and they've been working on this for seven years they still need another year to a year and a half and then the crown prosecution service might need another year we could be talking at least two more years I mean that that Justice still feels like a long way away it does it does it's not good enough it's not good enough you know come on it's been so long you know so long since it's happened I mean surely until now I mean what's taken them so long to get Justice what's taken them so long to get you know prosecution and all these you know what does the police say to you when you say to them as family members why is it taking not just seven but nine years to actually uh to get to the point where you can even put a charge did the police explain it no all they say they were investigating and we want prosecutions to be done but because of the inquiry is such a a big report and it's taking so so long to get anything like I said in the beginning each one put the blame on that that person that would put some blame on this that's not good enough for us because nothing's going to bring back our family no matter what where do you put the blame they blame on everyone the clading who who done it who did it um and as well why I like I've said in the beginning why our Tail's always been so high they shouldn't be built that high until now they haven't leared that you know and they're still clading out there as well they have not leared not even a thing they have taken some down but in London and I'm sure everywhere else there's plenty of glading I mean still it's a lot of cling you know so before this devastating night where you lost so many that you loved um did you or any of the family you lost have concerns about the cladding about the safety uh or do you feel that you just trusted which you know people do don't we we trust the place we live well to say you when they did the when they did the clading uh I did ask the contractor I asked him when he was working I said to him are are they safe what you're doing he's like yeah yeah they are and I said to him I don't think so and what was your concern was it fire or something else number one it's cuz we were so high up uh if we had to escape it would take us so long to go down so long you know where where were you just reminder on the 22nd 22nd floor yeah yeah and it would take so long to get downstairs you know and even like there was no numbers on the stairs L and everything and it was quite not a big well the stair were quite big don't get me wrong like the length and everything to go down but it was quite a long way especially like if it's anyone disabled or anyone had um issues like you know pain in the back or pain my mom did have pain T Tri she couldn't really she walked but not properly you know she had pain so you know it's they don't think about people living their their what they have you know issues like coming down the stairs if just in case there was a fire it's so easy but you're talk about inquiries and prosecutions and uh and um and blame to lose sight of the the tragedy of the the victims which you experienced in your life so so rarely tell us about your mom and your sister and uh her family the loved ones you lost I lost six members of my family and they were such a lovely people uh all of them were kind soft and uh caring and we were just ordering people like enjoyed our life did our you know what we had to do we got together every day and it was a lovely family you know say and how do you try to remember them now because it your thoughts about your lovely family must be clouded by what's happened on a terrible level can you can you take some joy in memories the only memories mostly what I've got is is my head in my head to say the truth you know the lovely moments we had together we went out went to the park and uh what's your favorite thing to do with your mom my mom watching TV watching TV TV what was the show she liked to watch uh she watched Turkish movies but translated in Arabic and she watched polywood and everything did she yeah I we enjoyed that go was you a good cook the best the best the best oh my God go yeah the best and there's another thing i' would like to say um considering my photos were all gone oh my so I lost you know quite a lot of photos I had to get photos back a bit from Friends a bit from here and there you know and bit from internet uh you know so they basically took my whole memory you know of even me as a stri of everything a strip of everything yeah even me from my childhood I don't have nothing I don't have nothing I think your mom though your mom would be so proud of you campaigning for change on behalf of other people in her her memory as very brave what you're doing but very important so thank you definitely yes thank you we will fight to the end we won't give up no matter what all of us good yeah thank you s thank you so much indeed it's very brave of you to come and speak to us about it but the passion of the fight we can see is there um if you at home have been affected by any of the issues that we've been talking about you can find advice and support at itv.com helplines thank you very much indeed thank okay
