wake up call this morning a little different that's my normal though because I'm on Central time so I'm up an hour I mean we're up technically at the same time but my alarm goes off at 4:15 on Sunday morning what time do you go to bed depends in college football season I got to stay up for the late game so it's usually around 10 11 what it's hard you got because I know that we have so much to talk about so I want to make sure that I'm up to speed on it cuz your crazy self is flying across the country doing live remotes for college football Peter is on a thousand every Sunday morning for those of you who are loyal listeners on Best Week Ever you guys know he has this energy and if I don't match it I feel like I'm not doing my job so I know that I have to be well read before we go on together so there's two different things that are affecting me this week is one I just got done like normally we're talk coming off the high of a college football season or even a college football game like we had Georgia Tech FSU that great um upset in in in week zero whatever the heck that is but then yesterday I'm more I'm more kind of calm this morning simply for the fact I just got done calling the BMW Championship and Keegan Bradley goes wire to wire like Ryder Cup champion they're chanting USA USA that was awesome then you finally get in here and I'm thinking all right we're going to talk college football we're like NFL is in that kind of weird week three and you're trying to figure out these last quarterback competitions and then I see the news last night jacobe brassette ends up getting injured in that game now that is one thing right now they were talking about jacobe could have gone back in but in fact go ahead let's go ahead and take a listen to that Pat Gerard Mayo here's what he had to say on Jacob's injury against the commanders yet late yesterday he would have been able to continue what's his health status right now is he I talked to him look we'll see tomor so we find out tomorrow and then of course the quintessential we're going to look at the tape because Drake May came in and Cordy have the Reigns here of this franchise in the very near future if not week one this was one of the final undecided quarterback battles right Pittsburgh was number one and it's got all the headlines because it's Russell Wilson and Justin fields and there was a lot to take away I think just from how little Russ ended up playing this weekend but this one it it was undecided but it felt like everything was leaning towards jacobe brassette getting the nod for that week one game at Cincinnati but then yesterday happens and it clouds the picture a bit because this guy has a shoulder injury despite the fact that his head coach says if this was a regular season game he could have gone back in you have two weeks until the start of the regular season is he going to be healthy enough to play through that he played through the rest of that drive he didn't look great they ended up having to punt I don't know if Drake May's ready everything we've heard from the head coach himself saying that he's the second best quarterback on this roster and he's saying that after this game that that's a telling sign that even the head coach doesn't think he's ready to go out to battle with the quarterback that he drafted third overall I'm so glad you brought that up because that is this is It's preseason coach is going to give us a word salad nobody's going to tell us what the hell they're really thinking and I completely understand that just because they're so they're such kind of conspiratorial type coaches and everybody thinks it's state Secrets but what Gerard Mayo had to say in the presser let's play that sound about hey would Drake may get the start your backup quarterback the rookie that you had would he actually get the start of jacobe can't go week one uh I would like to sit here and say 100 I I I'm I'm he's the second best quarterback would he start we'd have to go look at the tape he told you he not ready a statement like that tells you that the head coach doesn't think that his backup option right now who's the number three overall pick in the draft is ready to start week one they're hoping from the from what you can infer he said there they're hoping that jacobe brasset will be able to handle the Reigns for the first couple of weeks I mean here's their schedule they're at Cincinnati to start Seattle at home at the Jets at San Francisco that's a tough stretch for a team that's in a rebuild a team that is not positioned to Win It to Win right now I mean they traded Pieces away last week with Matthew judon that is a way to wreck a Rookie's confidence if you have to put Drake May out there because the starter or at least like your placeholder starter up until a certain point is not ready to go well also if you look at how bad that offensive line was yesterday three holding penalties I mean the sack that was given up because like they the pass rush had a well the pass rush had a a full clear Lane to jacobe brassette to to injure him on that play if there's any indication that you know what you're doing round one pick number your first pick in the first round it's going to get any sort of offensive line help imaginable all right I I hate to do this because I always are I'm all team Michelle here on this show okay okay never team Evan okay I I think it's just the way the the just the look that he has smugness just a smugness but he I'm sitting in his chair I'm surprised is this supposed to be where you sit you're you are Evan today um well no because I didn't I didn't wear well I'm the smug one here but I didn't wear near the amount of makeup that Evan had however I am team Evan are you had to come on someone's show as Phil and hos and immediately crushed them absolutely you can crush somebody else's show because here's the deal what I realize when the 4:15 wakeup call came this morning I'm never hosting this show again I'm I'll I'll be back here tomorrow yeah about to say like don't leave me high and dry for tomorrow I'll be back here tomorrow but now it's almost like I got a rental car that I got the full insurance I don't care what happens to the show going forward I'm going to get back into my SEC cocoon and I'll be fine because if you got to get in hair and makeup at 4:15 here for this show I'm I'm to and done or if you're naturally if you naturally have a tan the way that Evan Cohen does maybe it's not natural maybe it's maybe it's manufactured but if you if you can roll out of bed looking that ready for camera then I think that demure classy um mindful then I think you might change your mind um maybe that's Fair now will he change your mind with this take that got everybody all fired up earlier this week on on Sportsman like here's what uh why I'm on team Evan right now what if hypothetically the NFL you got to be one and done right like you cannot just go straight into the league you can't go Kevin Garnett and when I saw this take out I was like wait a minute there's no way that's going to happen we wouldn't have been able to see a Joe burrow you for instance I mean the storyline of Caleb Williams that everybody's fired up in Chicago would look completely different and then I sit there and go this is while I like this idea it would never work because of these stories because now you're going to find what Drake May potentially has right from the jump I hope to hell and if you're a Patriots fan right now you have to hope and pray that Drake May is not your day one starter and he may be a fine quarterback but this is the same reason why I didn't want Anthony Richardson starting with the Colts is that I feel like you do need that time you need to progress a little bit and I don't know if it's because of going back to Aaron roders or heck even with the Packers Jordan love I want to see these guys develop and hate to see him get thrown behind that offensive line with that schedule you talked about that that's an absolute it could be a career killer confidence killer for sure no doubt potential career killer and look not every team would have that luxury a lot of the teams that are drafting those quarterbacks are in effectively win now mode because it's There's jobs on the line with the coaching staff with the front office Chicago's a different situation because of they're planning to fresh rebild right they're planning to get that number one overall pick the Patriots are in a rebuild in their own right right new head coach technically new front office at least with the structure with balich gone they're not in win now mode but they might be forced out of necessity to play somebody far earlier than they're ready to Evans theory is a good one I wish for like hearing Tom Brady in his interview the other day with Stephen A Smith talking about this is this is what ruins quarterbacks playing them before the right to hell he didn't play early on it was Drew bledom show until it wasn't obviously most quarterbacks could benefit from time when we have these insane expectations that go with first year signal callers so often they don't match up to that like the Joe Burrows do and maybe Caleb Williams does Trevor Lawrence didn't match up to his first match up to it his first season Baker Mayfield sure has hecked into young over in in Carolina I mean that's and he may never that may have been the dagger in his career before his career ever really got started I mean you brought up Anthony Richardson did you see him the other night against the uh against the Bengals in that final preseason game thoughts did not look good right and it's not like you're we talked about this on around the horn it's not like you can like just flip the switch and say okay Joe flacko come in for a couple games till we get Anthony Richardson ready he's coming off injury he played four games his rookie season he still looks too raw out there in terms of decision making and in terms of overall skill set I worry about that with someone like Drake May who came into this situation everything was presented to lead him down the path where hey maybe it's week six maybe it's week seven draft and developed draft and developed and draft and develop doesn't need to mean a full year of being developed it could mean hey there's a point in the season where we feel you're ready to go out there and play or or the season is already gone and what else do we have to lose by throwing you out there and I think that's the proper way that the Patriots were going to have to go about it but they may be forced to bring him in a little bit sooner now with this jacobe brette injury all right also coming up we're going to get into the Kansas City Chiefs I think they are set over on their quarterback but when was the last time a quarterback battle whether it be the Steelers whether it be what the Raiders had at some point actually
