the noon hour is here check it out and you're locked on to Utah's highest rated most listened to sports radio station it's my station it's my station this is H ssen and Scotty G on 975 the KSL Sports Z [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Hanson Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone hey we hit hump day folks Wednesday is here college football's just around the corner and uh we got another funfilled show for you today three days away from some actual college football let's go you get to see the Florida state seminal in action what were they preseason ranked 10 or 11 or 12 or something uh that's a good question they're up there but you get to see Florida State open up their season against Georgia Tech so that's not a bad match up no that's going to be decent at least you'll get a a view of some of the top in this in this country with Florida State they are preseason ranked pretty high aren't they I'm just pulling up the rankings right now Florida state is 10th in both polls okay the coaches and the AP good so good job so Florida State's going to be a a big deal this year I think they're going to be a big deal this year and who gave I'm just looking at the uh the AP Top 25 Poll somebody gave Colorado a vote no in in uh in in other is receiving votes Colorado has a vote who did that shame on you gotta find him and take that away from him yeah um hey by the way boyy State and SMU are right there too yeah uh boisey States just on the outside looking in and SMU you're right right there behind him um by the way uh I was looking I'm just looking at the so ESPN has the AP the coaches and then they have the FCS coaches poll uhhuh guess he was 11th in the FCS coaches or FCS coaches poll okay just so everybody's familiar with this the FCS is onea it is onea so it's division one FCS yep same with Southern Utah Weber State yep and you asking me that makes me think that that would be probably Southern Illinois Southern Illinois checking in at number 11 uh that seems probably high because they chicked in at number four in their own conference so that might be that might be just a little bit high for them I I don't maybe there's something that I don't know in that whole thing I wonder if they're are they in that same conference with South Dakota State and North Dakota because they're number one and number two and then South Dakota is number three or number five so that that might hold it just might be a really topheavy conference well they're in the mvcf fs yeah Missouri Valley yeah yeah so that would be South Dakota State North Dakota yeah and South Dakota so yeah they're still fourth in the top 25 in their conference it's just three teams are in the top 10 um Southern Illinois is an interesting study because they've they've lost everything yeah they're trying to rebuild everything so Southern Illinois they lost their quarterback Nick Baker and Nick Baker had set pretty much every record at Southern Illinois they lost their number one and number two running backs Ro Elliot and Justin strong they lost their number one wide receiver their number two wide receivers coming back but that's it Scotty W they've lost their offense look at this Saluki talk right out of the break oh God I'm sorry this just tells you how desperate we are I love it man I love it for football but but it's relevant because they they're showing up in the top 25 FCS poll I mean top top 11 by the way Alex Kiri said uh just texted into us we looked up that one Colorado vote it's Mike Hill from Fox I remember Mike Hill he was a ESPN sports center guy and now he's with Fox Los Angeles so there you go and he went with Colorado yeah as a top 25 team yep that's where the one vote came from uh also checking in on the good job by JJ and Alex digging that up because yeah that guy deserves to get clowned for sure yeah he does checking in on the top 25 um those receiving votes two other Big 12 teams in Iowa State West Virginia the big 12's represented it's just not represented in the top 10 the highest you're finding is it is a number 12 ranking from the University of Utah yeah but we've got so many things that we're going to get into today I'm I broke down both the BYU and Utah schedules and I found a couple of really interesting things that I want to get into at some point in the show today because not all schedules are built equal no no no no no and it it's a little bit more deep than even I had originally thought on these two schedules and what direction they're headed so we'll jump into that just getting you ready for those Utah BYU schedules H in Scotty starting a lineup right now 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is H and Scotty g go L up is set and it's time to kick off the show with the biggest topic of the day this is the starting line on 975 the KSL Sports Z hands in Scotty 975 the KSL Sport Zone it is your starting lineup the starting lineup and the show itself all brought to you by mountland Supply where the pros go for plumbing landscaping irrigation agricultural irrigation HVAC parts tools safety equipment and a whole lot more you know the drill Water Runs Through It Mountain land's got you taken care of find a location near you at Mountain land.com all right um I was listening I went back and I was listening to some of our older interviews from earlier in the week and end of last week and I was listening to Freddy Whittingham and you and I talk about this in terms of media covering Utah and BYU in Utah State how you start out and Camp starts and we're all fired up let's go let's go let's go and next week when it's game week we'll be like all right it's game week let's go let's go let's go but there's this little span in the middle of it where it gets to be really difficult not just covering but I got to imagine as a player you talk about how difficult it is a player and I asked Freddy Whittingham earlier in the week about how difficult it is as a coach and if he feels it as well and his response was yeah absolutely we feel it yeah I mean we do acknowledge uh the dog days of Camp to the players and and point out that hey you know we're right in the middle of it we've been going for a while there's not really an end in sight yet and so you just got to focus every day on getting better uh doing your job paying attention to all the details you know a lot of it is going to sound cliche but that's really what you got to do you got to focus on their play you know evaluate their play you know on film at the practice um and make the corrections that you need to make see them do it the way you're asking them to do it the next time and so it's just that process of of everyday evaluation and making sure that uh they're taking steps forward in their fundamentals and technique the way they execute assignments their overall knowledge of the install and the scheme so you just try to keep them focused on what's the next thing in front of them he's so right on this and I'll tell you why it's so important you have to break your body down and you got to break your brain down and you got to break your psyche and your emotions you've got to tear it all down to the the studs because you you've got to and recovery time that's coming up but right now is the time to break it all down to the very Basics and and make yourself physically exhausted and your muscles hurt and your brain hurt and your body completely physically emptied of all of its energy because when it rebuilds it builds stronger so you tear it down and this is a conversation that I was having with my son who was fighting through the 102 103 degree temperatures and even hotter on that stupid field Turf yeah that field Turf with those black rubber dots just absorbs the Heat and then radiate it radiates it upwards and when you can focus in those climates and in those situations then you can focus in the fourth quarter of your opening conference game against Oklahoma State or Kansas State you can find that focus when you you have to have it and so it's it gets really tough because all you wanted to do is get practice over and you're so sick of the stupid same drills and you're so sick of taking on the same look Squad DET tackle or first or second string D tackle depending on how early in Camp it is and if you don't remind yourself that it's critical that every snap you got to take advantage of every snap from the steps to the angles to the hand placements to the the energy that you exert you got to take advantage of every rep otherwise you're taking a step backwards otherwise you're not maxing out how good you can get and you know what Scotty to to Freddy's point that is on the coaches because it is innate it is human nature for us when we're exhausted it's human nature to be like nah yeah not today not doing it this is a stupid drill I'm gonna have a it I'm not I'm not gonna I'm not going through these ladders again with full exertion yeah and as a coach you've got to see it and be like nope not happening I was at a camp yesterday I won't mention which Camp I was at a camp yesterday and I saw the coach push these players in a physical exhaustion drill before they got into team before they got really going into practice to the point where they were done they just physically burnt yeah and done and then they went to practice and there's something to be said about that now the players were none too happy you could see it in their body language the practice was sloppy because they're they were physically burnt to the core but there's something to be said in that because you look around like okay who's thriving right now in exhaustion who's who's got it it through this exhaust who's got it because then I can build a fourth quarter game plan around a linebacker that is not showing the wear and tear of what what we just did yeah or I can build it around a running back or a receiver or a tight end or a certain side of the offensive line I can build it behind these guys that are showing no signs of physical exhaustion they're they're still with it mentally they're not jumping off sides or they're not false starting they're they're all engaged they're executing the game plan or they're executing what whatever it is that they're asked to do I can identify it and get it out of them so these parts of Camp are critical you can learn so much about your team in these parts of Camp well and I think that's why um I think that's why Kyle Whittingham has had so much success at the University of Utah and his staff because they push those guys so hard in Camp so that when now look there might be some collateral damage in terms of injuries and it may have happened last year or we might see teams kind of wear down in the second half of a season and that's been something that's plagued Utah in years past but what we do know about Utah is they're extremely tough and they finish games and when the fourth quarter rolls around and you're in a dog fight chances are they're going to come out on top why because they do the little things in July and August that allows that cream to rise to the top and that's what you see and I was talking to um I was uh I was up at Utah State scrimmage a couple weeks ago and I know uh one of the officials that uh they bring in to use at some of the camps and some of the scrimmages and he he officiates a little bit in the Mountain West does a lot of FCS games and so he's been around he does a lot of programs and and he's a guy that that school he lives here locally and so he'll go to a lot of these schools and help out when they need an official to run a scrimmage and stuff like that and he told me he's like look he goes I've been all over the state from Southern Utah to Weber State Utah State he goes when you are at Utah's Camp it's different there is a different vibe there is a different feel and when you're walk on to that field at the University of Utah during a practice or a scrimmage it has a different level of intensity that he goes I have never felt anywhere else in a scrimmage or a practice it's cranked up and he goes those coaches just run it differently and other coaches try to do it but for whatever it's like inside the NBA on TNT for whatever reason ESPN's been throwing out all different kinds of combinations hoping to try to figure out the magic that is inside the NBA and they just can't do it colani was part of the Utah program he's tried to replicate what goes on at Utah in terms of intensity in terms of pass rush in terms of all that stuff that dude has done everything he can to try to replicate what happened at the University of Utah and he hasn't been able to do it now not say he won't eventually strike gold it could happen yeah maybe Jay and maybe Jay Hill's able to tap into it maybe those two are able to combine and yeah like I'm saying Anderson I'm not saying it's a lost cause I'm just saying they haven't been able to tap into it yet but for whatever reason Utah from a culture standpoint from a uh an intensity and all of these little intangible things have got it dialed in and and it translates into the season I stepped on to the Utah campus for a Utah Camp my first Camp was 2007 that I actually went to the camp to cover the camp and it was it was just like lightning and and I was just coming out of professional football and I know people think that I that I exaggerate or that I have too much love for Kyle Whittingham or that I talk way too highly about Kyle Whittingham Scotty you know me I talk about good football yeah good coaching and I try to represent where I see it I try to be as honest as I can about where I see it and from day one of stepping on into his camp in 2007 back with Gary Anderson um I believe the the first player I can remember seeing in the first camp that I covered was Joe Ganon like that was the first guy that he was you know out of his mind and and again I'm just coming out of my seventh professional season my fourth AF F season and even I felt it and then I felt it even more in 2008 covering that camp mhm that camp was just electric and I have watched those camps stay very similar now there's been changes over the years but it's very similar in energy and excitement and I think where that comes from Morgan SC and Shri Shaw and even Freddy Whittingham the brother KY Whittingham they all know they can't get away with anything they can't if they try to skate on a drill if they try to skate with emotion or energy or excitement if they then they're on the hook well why was your squad down why didn't your squad know what they were supposed to do in that drill why are we getting into the red zone why are we doing goal line and you've got a Right Guard that's going the wrong direction why are we trying to get our field goal team out on the field and I've got kickers that are running out of the indoor it's like everybody answers for something to the head guy yeah the head guy knows everything yeah and I was actually talking to another instate coach that is not on that staff I was talking to another instate coach and I was making the reference to him that K Whittingham is the age that level Edwards was when I stepped on to the campus at BYU right now that's crazy KY Whittingham is is lvll Edwards age that that that LV was at when I came to BYU and Kyle is more now I Kyle is more involved and intertwin mind with the daily operations than LV was at that point oh yeah yeah he just is he just is is more forceful and not saying that level didn't work it's just a different approach see I want to be really careful with that because LVL did what he did because he had built it that way yeah with Ken Schmidt and Norm chow and all of his crew he had built it that way but C winningham's practices are still energetic and high energy this is an interesting year because I know that there's a lot of speculation out there that this might be K's last and it's their first in the Big 12 and he wants to enter it in and he wants to win a conference Championship all those things look you and I spoke with KY yeah and we had a very Frank conversation of this is a Big Year and you've had a lot of energy injuries and he said well I'm dialing it back I don't know how much dialing back there's been in this Camp I I don't think that it's been very dialed back maybe a little bit less hitting but every video that I've seen come out of that camp is electric it's high energy it's high impact and so I don't know how much it's dial back maybe they don't run as many plays maybe they don't have as much goal line full pads snot Bubbles and drool maybe they don't have that but everything I see coming out of at Camp is high energy which it should be even though you've got veterans you don't want them to feel the difference you want them to think hey it's it's a conference Championship or bust yeah the the hype has gotten so big for Utah it's almost like it is a conference Championship herst they step out on the field against Southern Utah and look they'll they'll annihilate Southern Utah um I'm sure you know because every Utah game against an FCS opponent the first quarter will be like 73 and you be like oh is this crazy you know what's going on it'll end up being 35 to three what the final it's what happens every year um but there's going to be from then on whether it's at Utah State whether it's against Baylor whether it's the opener against Oklahoma state every game for Utah is going to feel like a college football playoff game because essentially it is because that's the expectations that are going to be placed on this team yeah and that's why I wanted to play those Freddy Whittingham comments because what you set in stone now is going to pay dividends down the line and how difficult it is and you talk about it all the time and I've learned so much about camps and the innerworkings of these programs from you because you live through it you know how difficult it is to push through it and I to a certain extent you have regrets on not maxing out maxing out yes some of those moments you're a th% right and and I think Utah is like hey we can't look back five years from now and have regrets over this year because the stage is set for something special I wish I could go back to my sophomore year and recommit myself in my sophomore season because I think if I could have recommitted myself in my sophomore season now I I would have if I could go back and move myself I'd move myself to Center under Roger French yeah and I would you think if you would have asked would they have done that no like you were pretty much stuck there weren't you yeah because I was I was very good at what I did yeah on the interior defensively my sophomore year I played defensive end and I got like four or five starts my sophomore year as a dend and then moved into the tackle position and and played defensively but I wish I could go back move myself to Center and be under Roger French and I and then recommit myself mentally yeah it's just weird when you get to college and you sign a 5-year contract which back then it felt like you were signing a 5-year contract I've got five years to play for and it felt like an eternity because you had just finished up four years of high school football and it felt like a lifetime yeah and camps felt like they were 10 years long and so you're like well I'm be here forever here we go stumbling into five years of college football and you got this weird tunnel vision of every day is just too much and it's going to be forever and then you get there to your senior year and you're like oh man I didn't do everything I could have holy cow I should have designated a some type of degree that I could do something with I should I should have laser focused in this area with my weight my conditioning I should have done this and I should have done that you're right you don't want to have regrets the the one thing C winingham can't do it this season is look back and go man I I made those adjustments and man that got me off who I was that got me off who I was and what my Camp is and gosh I can't believe I did that with this talent I should have just stuck to what I know which is hard NOS because at least we could have lost we could have lost my way instead of losing this way with a lack of physicality which is why I I think and you you you said like they may have gone two days with an altered schedule or something like that and then Kyle saw somebody lacking like screw it no we're going back so yeah Scotty there's no way they if Kyle Whittingham pulls up film of the last time they played BYU nobody's gonna take a single day off from physicality because they got beat in the trench yeah they did they did and don't make me do another film study on it like I'll do the I'll do another one I'll bring it and I'll show you how they were getting caught on angles and they were getting moved out and their offensive line was getting hit punched right in the mouth BYU was bringing a lower pad level that game was one in the trench I know that people are like well Charlie Brewer at Utah okay fine maybe a better quarterback gets rid of the ball a little faster maybe that there you could do some things offensively it was it was a trench win yeah and all K winingham has to do is look at it and be like uh that's not going to happen to us again and guess who's on our schedule and guess what it's a bigger game because it's conference and if this is my last goal we're definitely not going to go out like that and that's why I'm looking at BYU like hey BYU they're GNA bring everything they got because 2021 was pretty embarrassing for them you're into the Hornets Nest now heck yeah but again maybe BYU finds a way to surprise a lot of people with their physicality that was really eye openening for everybody in 2020 21 yeah and a big moment for col oh absolutely maybe his biggest uh I think so and he's going to need that again this year all right 1226 H and Scotty thanks for making his part of your Wednesday coming up a little bit later on we will continue to get you ready for the start of the college football season we'll even talk a little NHL Cole baggley will join us coming up at 105 get the latest from the Utah Hockey Club and then Mark Daniels he is the play-by-play announcer for Central Florida who will be hosting both BYU and Utah this upcoming season so we'll chat with him coming up at 205 and Lloyd it is official Shawn pton has made the announcement you know what we have to talk about that coming up Bo Nicks is the starter in Denver shocker you know you know you you saw there at the rookie there hasn't been a a rookie quarterback that started for the Broncos since J uh uh Jay Cutler nope John Elway Oh you mean started the season started the season yes start of the Season sorry no started the season sorry got you okay I got you no since John Elway what did I and John Elway got benched Steve Deber came in and uh Steve Deber yeah came in why do I not remember him with the with the Broncos yeah I know that was a that was a uh interesting well I don't even remember that that was that was 83 we were okay then we did I that's why I didn't remember that was a long time ago all right 1228 hands and Scotty uh coming up next uh we'll take a close look at the schedule discrepancy between Utah and BYU next 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is Jake Scott and Ben Anderson there's a different feeling on campus at BYU right now with the football team I sense a difficulty turning a corner at least this year because you're not talking about a young quarterback at this point I don't see what what you do this year that launches into future seasons of BYU being on this significant upward trajectory especially when so often our conversation has been like can you win six games six games at BYU absolutely has to be the standard it's a great football program historically six wins cannot be the bar yeah they're they're not below six wins all that often in their history I I hope it's not just this weird Dead season it just feels like a little bit of a dead season that we're going a book end on both sides and say it has nothing to do with the future and nothing to do with the past here Jake Scott and Ben Anderson every day from 10: to no on 975 the KSL Sports Z every moment of every show is available in podcast form by searching Hans and Scotty on your favorite podcasting platform or online at KSL sports.com this is H Olsen and Scotty G on 975 the KSL Sports Zone [Music] Lloyd was making fun of us before the show because uh you and I are on a bit of a health kick and not making fun no a little bit we have a protein bar that we love Yeah and and I bought way too much of one flavor and so I texted H last time like hey would you be willing to swap out cuz I know you got a wide variety and so I brought in some of one and you brought in a couple of others and so we were swapping and like trading cards in there Lloyd asked us if it was prison currency for us it is it is man that it is it's currency and it was an even swap if if you didn't notice Lloyd it was four bars for four bars because I thought you got an extra one nope no no four bars for four four bars you don't I just thought maybe he owed you you don't play around with these no no no like look i' I'm more than happy to concede some things here and there hands is as well but when it comes to those protein bars it's fair and fair square and square by the way there's no way that ice cream's healthy Maybe not maybe healthy isn't the right it's packed full of protein oh yeah and there's not a lot of calories in that thing that that is I gave h a uh an ice cream a protein ice cream recipe for the ninja creamy yeah it was butter do you have that ninja creamy uh creamy too I did I got it from my birthday and and I it was full disclosure I told Scott when I opened up the ninja creamy box for my birthday it was full on Despair and disappointment like I cannot believe I got a vacuum for my birthday I cannot believe I just got a blender for my birthday and the very first mixup it was a chocolate protein shake that I turned into a an ice cream yeah and I was like oh this is groundbreaking the protein shakes out of these I've been researching him a little bit researching so so he's got I gave so did you go vanilla or did you go cake batter vanilla all right so we got a vanilla protein shake skim milk um sugar-free pudding butterscotch and vanilla yep and I did do the full two tablespoons of the butterscotch okay and then one of vanilla and one vanilla and then a little did you put a little artificial sweetener in I did I the monk fruit put a little monk fruit in there you got it one serving of that is probably about 140 calories and about 30 grams of protein and I think I ate three servings all right so 300 calories and how many proteins you said uh I you're probably about 20 yeah probably per serving uh yeah 15 to 20 per serving so you probably at 60 grams of protein that's what I was thinking I was right in that and it didn't make sense you feel like you're eating like the most creamy very very few carbs too very little sugar is is wild I might eat it every night because it's that good oh oh and a little bit did you use peanut butter or the PB fit Stu the PB fit yeah yeah two tablespoons yeah which I think it makes it creamier yeah I know it does I'm telling you man anyways we're nering out on this stuff well it's okay hey I wanted to talk to you about this because I was going through the BYU in Utah schedules because it was pretty obvious during the schedule release that by schedule is quite a bit more difficult yeah where they're taking on five ranked opponents that sit inside the conference Utah's taking two ranked opponents that sit inside the conference and I know people are trying to ease out of it a little bit because they're like well yeah but you're getting those at LEL Edward Stadium I I don't care where you play them those are five really tough teams but I went a little bit deeper on this Scotty did you know BYU is playing eight teams that played in bowl games last year eight teams that played in bowl games SMU Wyoming Kansas State Arizona Oklahoma State Central Florida that made it to a bowl game they lost their bowl game but they made it to a bowl game Utah and Kansas Utah on the other hand is playing five teams that made bowl games and that includes Utah state that made a bowl at six and six what bowl game did they go to I'm trying to remember oh was the Potato Bowl potato bowl yeah yeah oh yeah it was the potato bowl yep and they lost it yep because they finished with a six and seven record yep so Utah State Oklahoma State Arizona Iowa State and then that same Central Florida team yeah that made the bowl last year at six and six but lost in that ball game now one of those is going to be a little different because Utah BYU plays Utah Utah obviously can't play themselves right so but that's still what eight versus five five and then I did a total combined record so Utah's combined record of opponents last year 69 and 79 so a pretty significant losing percentage Yeah 69 and 79 BYU is playing a schedule that is 90 and 64 yeah that 90 and 64 yeah uh just to take a little bit further Utah is playing a schedule of four winning records from last year now I know that there were five bowl games but but Utah State Utah lost there so they ended up six and seven they they've got four teams with winning records and that does include Southern Utah at six and five if you want to go FBS you've got three winning records those three Oklahoma State yeah Arizona and Iowa State at 7 and six with BYU it's eight winning records wow if you wanted to take Southern Illinois eight and five away it's seven teams with winning records including SMU at 11 and3 Wyoming at 9 and4 Kansas State at 9 and4 Arizona at 10 and3 Oklahoma State at 10 and 4 Utah at 8 and5 and Kansas at 9 and four well I was going to say the Big 12 rolled out the red carpet for Utah in a big way they absolutely did and I don't know if that's intentional and I I don't really care and look I'm not upset about it I'm happy for Utah yeah I'm happy because we may get to see a Utah team in a college football playoff in a college football playoff and as we're seeing Utah's numbers with Vegas and their odds to make that college football playoff jump as we see that it's an indicator of what Vegas feels not just Utah but what they feel of their schedule yes yep 100% that comes into play so I feel like this schedule for Utah is so favorable and now what's crazy Scotty if you get past week five you get past week five which is Arizona you play one team that's going to be good I think Iowa State's going to be good that's it yeah after week five you know you got this run of teams that you really should beat I do think TCU is going to be better but you got TCU at Ryle Stadium I do think that rivalry game is going to be really tough with BYU I really do because it always is but you got that at rle Stadium you do play Iowa State the only team with a winning record after week five but you get them at ruckle Stadium the road games at Arizona State at Houston at Colorado you're gonna you're gonna whip those three teams yeah you should and then your final Road game is that Central Florida game that's the game that was it Barry traml that yeah picked the upset for Central Florida yep over Utah I don't think so and we'll talk to Central Florida's play-by-play guy coming up today at 205 that's right they're hosting both Utah and BYU this year that's right we we're going to catch up with Mark Daniels from Central Florida he's great so I'm trying to just emphasize and accentuate the differences in schedules pretty startling and what it plays into and how much it means in the grand scheme of things and I think that it puts BYU between a rock and a hard spot if they don't find a way to it very minimum split SMU and Wyoming if they don't find a way to at the very least split them then getting together six wins is going to be a near impossibility they'll beat Southern Illinois and if you can split those you start the season two and one you got to win four games in conference and you're doing okay because your four games would be Baylor Central Florida Arizona State and Houston yeah and you can win those games you can win them yeah you should win them and that gets you to six and six get you to a bowl game boom that gives colani a little bit of a breathing space yeah you're okay go go play well that game and compete well against Utah don't get blown out against Utah that's a big one yeah gotta which I anticipate they will I do think they will they'll play well because they always do and I know we talked about this and I I do get to this point in Camp pre-season where I start to see all sunny skies all rainbows I I start to see all the lollipops and the Beautiful Things of the world that that's where I get at this point that's how we all are in Camp but I I tend to be a walking walking Optimist I I do I am a realist and but it's weird how optimistic I always get for all teams in the state at this point and I'm I'm starting to truly believe that BYU is a six- win team minimum and I'm starting to truly believe that they will keep it close and it will be a dog fight and it will be a game and they're going to show everything they could possibly show in that rivalry game which as you mentioned would be a great situation for Kanani if they win seven games let's go that's if they win seven regular season games That's not including the bowl game six and six and then they win their bowl game and they finish seven and six and it's a bad bowl and it's a bad team I don't care bowl games don't mean a lot to me but six if they get seven regular season wins then that means that they picked up a win that they were probably heavily underdogs too that means that they pick up a win against in Arizona yeah or an Oklahoma state or a Kansas or Utah or Utah or Kansas state that means they pick up one of those not to mention beating a SMU team that was 11 and3 and or beating a Wyoming team that was was nine and four I don't think Wyoming is going to be as good as SMU because Wyoming lost their quarterback SMU has both their quarterbacks back in a very good quarterback situation but the point I'm trying to drive home is BYU has got a tough lot in front of them 90 and 64 with eight bowl games on their schedule this season and Utah 69 and 79 69 and 79 with five bowl games nice for you Utah for sure and if if you put my hand to the fire on this between Southern Illinois and Southern Utah I'm taking Southern Utah if if you're telling me who I need to play oh yeah yeah yeah I'm taking Southern Utah like I'd rather play Southern Utah than Southern Illinois yep 1247 hands and Scotty what you may miss coming up next uh Cole Bagley will join us at 105 we'll talk a little Utah Hockey Club with him it's all right here on 975d KSL Sports Zone 3 2 1 fine H and Scotty I want to have that conversation on the air that would be fun i''d go over wello you and me both that's the one thing I do got going for me yeah hopefully fingers crossed all right hands of Scotty 975 theks Sport Zone 1253 on your Wednesday week's nearly halfway over and you're going to have meaningful college football games coming up this weekend in the meantime we've got NFL camps that are going on and they're starting to get close to closing up and getting themselves ready for game prep and Scotty I thought that this conversation I I actually saw you well at least I yeah we were I was listening to it during the break yeah so I found this this morning and I went through the whole audio clip of Britain cvy and at Phillies camp and there's actually a few things I want people to listen for number one listen for the recruiting tactics and how Utah dealt with Britain cvy size as compared to others in the recruiting world and then I want you to hear Britain CV's thoughts about his size because I'm just telling you right now in the world of college football and high school recruiting coaches love to say boy we love your kid just doesn't have the size he's just not the not the measurements that we need from your kid well here's Brit and cvy talking about that honestly I have never viewed my size as a disadvantage uh I think that's the key is change the framework of your mind to see whatever your weakness is as an advantage not a disadvantage there's certain things I can do as a smaller guy that I would not be able to do if I were bigger and um so I I remember when I was being recruited I had people who I could always tell in the back of their mind they just were obsessed with how small I was and I didn't give them the time of day because I'm like that will never leave your brain when I went to Utah all they talked about was the upside you're so quick you do this you're smart they never saw my size as a disadvantage and I'm like that's my people right there those are my people they they get it and I think uh finding mentors like that is important and then being your own kind of advocate in that sense pretty impressive stuff well I really think that the world of recruiting is broken right now yes yep I think we've gotten so much to size and scale that we have forgotten what makes some players unique and great everybody's become the Raiders got the Raiders used to be fast measurables can he catch don't worry about it Darius Hayward Bay he'll learn how to catch you can figure it out yeah can he run a 4240 yes okay draft him then draft him and I cannot express to people how many universities Miss on how many guys oh je and now it's being represented in the transfer portal yep because we're seeing these Mountain West Conference guys or these FCS guys get into the transfer portal and we're seeing now FBS teams offer them big time bucks why because they completely whiffed yeah they completely missed and I think that there's an amount of being held accountable for those misses that needs to happen in the world of recruiting you've got to you've got to hit on some of these players that might not hit the measurables I know of one in particular that is a five1 middle linebacker that should have multiple multiple offers and doesn't have one because he 5'11 he's not 61 or 6'2 or whatever that mold is but some of the best linebackers that I played with some of the best linebackers I played against some of the best linebackers I knew you know this goes through guys like Shay mbrook and Brad Martin it goes to guys like Zach Thomas Z Thomas was 510 who was in the league when I was in the league and I still think he's one of the top five middle linebackers in NFL history that's that's me that's my opinion but he was legendary don't disagree one bit for how tough he was and how much he could take it so it's like when I hear Brit and cvy talk about that it makes me want to jump into the recruiting World it makes me want to become a recruiting mind and be able to seek out dudes like Britain cubby that have the it factor that nobody else is seeing and then bring the dude with the it factor in and instill major belief that this is your family we love you we believe in you where all of a sudden he blooms into this incredible individual that helps you to pack 12 championships and gets himself in the league now he's making a ton of money playing the game and it's looking like Philly's gonna Institute him in more than just returns yeah you saw that they're working him into some of the offensive formatting I remember talking to Gary Anderson when he was first at Utah State and just took took that job and I remember him specifically talking about Andrew Rich who was at BYU and just killing it at BYU but for whatever reason nobody offered him out of high school he ends up going to snow and ends up blowing up at snow and then able to transition and goes to BYU and has a good career at BYU and I remember Gary Anderson now granted this is before the transfer portal and where you could essentially pay your Walk-Ons and stuff like that but he said he said there's no reason that kid shouldn't have been at Utah State like that's a kid that we see BYU and Utah say oh he doesn't fit the measurables he doesn't fit the mold uh and and go to snow and let's see how you develop there no you're going to come here we're going to give you a scholarship because you're an instate kid we can see you play football well and we're gonna we don't care about how how big you are we don't care about any of that stuff we know that when you're out on the football field good things happen yeah and so we're going to give you a scholarship we're not going to let you fall through the cracks blow up a JC and then you get to go to the school that ultimately you wanted to go to all along we're going to we're going to be we're going to cut out the middleman and we're going to give you a scholarship right now well you know the bummer side of this is Scotty now bigger universities can get lazy oh yeah exactly and say because of transfer portal we will miss yeah and then we'll go get them yeah we got their number we know their family's name we'll let them go to Georgia Southern and develop and let those coaches work on it and then uh when when he and in fact I wouldn't surprise me if those conversations are even had they're like hey look we don't have a scholarship for you uh but you know what go take go to the school we like that staff they do a good job developing you go there for a year maybe two and then we'll roll out the uh red carpet for you and you come here I'm sure those conversations happen all the time because they happen in in terms of JC all the time like where a coach would be like hey look we need to see a little bit more out of you uh we like this staff uh at snow go down there they'll develop you and then we'll bring you back up here M I guarantee that happens at the uh you know with G5 schools now I will however say that there are not a ton of Britain cubbies in the world nope they're just aren't he is such a he is such a unique commodity I do see guys that I think of in that way like I've told you about one that I think Utah St picked up yeah two years ago in kti and sweat where he may not fit measurements but if that g if he's healthy and he's playing in that defensive back field you watch like he is a miracle worker and but his measurables don't fit what you would think yeah and if he goes and does what he what I think he could do then he could be an Ike Larson likee playmaker but then what happens the schools that skipped on you they come back around and they're like oh hey yeah instate kid we got to keep you here yeah this is how we're going to do it and and then Utah State or Weber State you know they're the ones that end up suffering because they saw it and they took the shot on it yeah all right H and Scotty coming up next Cole baggley will join us we'll chat a little Utah Hockey Club with him we are just about 48 days away from starting the NHL season believe it or not this is hands in Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone
