welcome to the Vernon verdict I'm your host Jacob Vernon we're here in Tiger stadium right after LSU versus Nicholls I'm with my guy G Sports you know about to be doing our weekly breakdown of LSU's games salt and pepper man get ready hey during the home games we'll take it to you live post game from Tiger Stadium today we had a little bit of a it was a heart racer at the beginning at you started out slow then they kind of got their you know they got their groove they found their fitting so to speak G what was your takeaways from this game first of all I want to give Tim Rebo the head coach for niichel State a lot a lot of credit uh I thought they came in with a good plan today uh trying to run the ball trying to uh run some clock so you can keep LSU offense off the field uh Colin gammer finish the game with an over 100 yard rushing with that long 67 yd run I thought that gave that that offers a lot a lot of confidence uh but you know like Brian Kelly say even though they didn't win the game as pretty as they wanted you got to take a win 44 to 21 uh especially coming off a short week they got in at 5 a.m. on on Sunday night and then practice to Tuesday so I think that played a factor until why you know the defense was fatigue and then jacobe Giller went out with a with an injury I think in the second quarter but U kudos to to to Gar NM man he seemed like he's playing with all the confidence in the world him and KY Lacy keep continues to build that chemistry and that connection three Tes on the night for K Lacy six t on the night for G nus uh the true freshman that got involved tonight try a green Jawan Johnson Deshawn spills uh and my M my Ken Durham you know a lot of lot of different freshman got involved tonight and and played significant rules and I thought that was big for the Tigers yeah I'm excited to see that they got Joan Johnson in in the end zone a little bit of a package I didn't know how big of a role he would have Brian Kelly told us he's going to play a little bit of running back a little bit of slot he's even going to continue to be on special team so Joan's got a lot of potential and he was kind of you know mentioning his time at LCA you know multiple positions just how natural he is in terms of being able to adjust and being able to kind of just learn on the fly as he did in 48 hours to prepare for this role but like you said Garrett NM another 300 yard game six passing touchdowns he lit them up tonight running game kind of was slow though I mean that's really what LSU's been lacking lately and it's confusing cuz you've got one of the best offensive lines but really I guess what it boils down to is a couple of things first things first you do lose John emry who was your IAD that week one performance he put on with stellar and it's kind of hard to say what he do in week two but I'd imagine it would be more of the same now you're going to kind of have to try to find that spark and I mean is Jan Johnson going to give the spark is it kayen Durham is it kayb Jackson it's hard to tell with running back it kind of goes You Know by committee so to speak and I mean I feel like Frank Wilson is the guy to put in this situation to figure out this method to the Badness if you will but what do you think they're going to have to do to light that that you know side of the ball back up and I think that's the key thing right being able to run the ball LSU has always been known to be able to run the ball effectively get down here and get full five yards of Pop they only a three yards of carry tonight uh that's concerning going into SEC play on the road where you're going to be in a hostile and Loud environment running the ball kind of takes the crowd out of it right when you're getting those first downs and and you kind of um imposing your will on on on their D line uh it's a concern man they didn't run the ball good against USC U you know I think Brad Davis and and coach Kelly and those guys are going to come up with a different plan um maybe they got to get a little creative you know with the play calling and see if that can kind of jump start this this running game because when you get when you get into the to the to the to the meat and potatoes of this SEC schedule you're going to have to be able to run the ball you're not going to just be to get out there and just throw the ball 50 to 55 times a game with G nut I know he would love to do that and know k l those receivers would love to him do that but they got to be able to run the ball man Caleb Jackson we got to see more out of him uh Kaden Durham Jaan Johnson now that he's in the fold they got to be able to get something from that running game man and if they don't it's going to be a long season and one of the blessings in the skies I tried to be you know a little optimistic with the John emry situation is now Caleb Jackson gets 100% immersed into that backup running back roll hopefully he'll be able to kind of hit his stride and grow Joe S said there's a couple of things that he had to learn as a you know a younger running back it's not just get the ball and run you got to understand your Gap assignment you got to kind of get in you know the mental side of things I feel like you know he's got the potential and the makings to be one of the biggest running backs but we've just got to get him to really find that stride really get into that Groove and and just start stacking days so to speak and I mean does it come next week against uh South Carolina I hope because they're definitely going to need it they're talking about college game day showing up we're talking about the beginning of the SEC schedule not to mention it's an 11:00 a.m. kickoff so it's going to be bright and early and I mean talking about traveling fatigue injuries piling up Jacobian Giller gets out today I mean nus even went down a little bit I was I was a little concerned about that but then when I saw him on the side getting his legs mides I was like okay it must be a cramp uh you know I think Joe Sloan one thing he might have to consider doing going forward especially if they can't run the ball effectively against South Carolina early on they might have to start passing the ball to set up the Run usually you'll see teams trying to set the run up I mean run ball to set up the pass I think it might be reversed with LSU you know every team is different man every team is different and he had the receiver to be able to throw the ball around um but you just cannot depend on just passing the ball 80 to 85% of the time and and I think if you know you you open the game up passing the ball and now you get them coming out with de more DBS on the field now you can kind of get that that B that box a little light and now you can see somebody like Caleb Jackson andos as well when he get to that second level and be able to get some long runs and Kaden Durham and Jawan Johnson man and so uh that's what I kind of think that Joe SL might might start trying to do going forward man trying to set the run up with the pass do you think that Chris Hilton's absence could kind of be what's making this offense not necessarily start slow but it it just wasn't as uh you know open as it potentially could have been you know they've been practicing all summer all spring all fall with those three-headed monsters you know you got Kyrie Lacy Chris Hilt and CJ but now you just got KY and CJ might be a little easier for the defense to kind of pick up on things what's your take on that I definitely think that not having Chris Hill in the in the lineup changes uh how Joe Sloan goes about calling plays uh cuz that's your vertical threat right and so when he does get back back into the lineup I think you're going to see him you know stretch the defense more and now you're going to open up that intermediate game for k l and CJ Daniels and Mason Taylor right I would like to see Aaron Anderson be able to take some shots down the field uh you know I know they try to use him in space a lot but Aaron is a four for guy all right you can kind of see uh him being able to have to be that have that big play potential down the field but we'll see we'll see I do I do believe in what Joe SLO going to be able to do going forward especially having somebody like Chris Hilton in the lineup cuz when you motion Chris Hilton or whatever side of the field he's on you got to identify where where's threea because he could blow the top off a defense so U I'm looking forward to see him coming back they say he could have probably played tonight but they're playing niggles trying to get him 100% going into that South Carolina game so it's going to be interesting to see how how much an impact Chris Hill makes when he comes back next week I agree yeah I think that LSU's biggest thing they're going to have to continue to focus on is just keep adding those days keep getting that momentum together the beginning of the Season didn't go the way you want it but like Nick sain said you're better than you think LSU's not in a situation where you're going to be a seven- win eight- win team you could you know be similar to a year one with BK where you can somehow some way fight and Claw your way to a conference Championship I mean it'll be a tough path but I feel like if you start now with this type of Victory and then you head into South Carolina you get a big SEC open and win you come back beat UCLA beats out that Alabama heading to a by week now you start you know you're getting some juice now you got some hype behind you and this is going to be one of the more pivotal points of LSU schedules next week and I want to remind people when they played Florida State in gramlin last year the offense wasn't high flying and potting when we saw them play them games it wasn't until the Mississippi State game where you saw that offense starting to take off and you start seeing the big plays down the field um it's maybe it's taken a couple games for this offense to look like a high powerered offense and it sounds like I'm I'm I'm being negative because they they put up over 300 yards passing in the last two games but we still looking for those those deep shots down the field we still looking for those explosive plays right I think you start seeing that when Chris Hilton comes back and so I think LSU fans should not be concerned at all um I know when you look at a team like Nichol State you say man you let them have over 100 yards rushing and they put up 21 points you know you would like to see them cover the spread right and cover the 46 point spread that's a good team in niichel state man this team played Georgia to the wire they beat Kansas Tim Rebo has his teams ready even when he plays the pile five poters man um I think the biggest thing is what I saw too on defense Z Alexander coming back you know coming out the to ACL last year he had started playing good around that time when he got hurt against Arkansas and so having him at one corner and then ashon stamps up the other corner and then you see people like Colin Jackson and Des Shawn spills coming in as some young safeties uh I like the way that backend looking they just going to have to get that that that front uh up the par with with jacobe and Giller out no time no telling how long he's going to be out I think I'm not worried about Greg pen I'm not worried about with weeks um how Perkins I would like to see him uh make a few more plays but I think he's still trying to figure out that linebacker role you know Blake Baker got a lot on his play I think he's doing more thinking than just playing fast and I think once you see him get about three or four games under his belt um going into that Old Miss game and I'm not trying to think ahead I think you'll see how Perkins start looking like the the number seven that we've been accustomed to see in the last two years yeah it's definitely going to take some getting used to uh another thing that I uh noticed today you talking about the sea Spears I enjoyed watching PJ Woodland get out there PJ wood another one another one like there's not necessarily something you've been lacking is dbd but you're in a situation now where you could put out guys that are true freshman now whether that be you know IND indicative of you know qu Raymond's process or just the recruiting as a whole either way these guys are definitely Leaps and Bounds better than the DB rooms that we've seen recently and with that being said I feel like the sky is the limit for these guys just because if PJ Woodland continues to be like this and you can keep leaning on him now you don't have to have that big worry on that defense now you're going to actually have you know some type of coverage over at the top and then you know if Jacobi and gillary take some time to get back it won't be as detrimental because going forward you know Ashen stamp sage oryan and then when we were kind of confused on if Z was going to be healthy or not we were scratching our heads where's the depth what's this looking like you said Z Alexander's coming back and he looked good uh PJ's looking good Ashton's looking good JK kind of got in there and got active a little bit there's some Corners here that you could actually look to to be able to be plugged and played flipped around mixed in and out and then yeah Deshawn Spears him at that safety spot that's that's a breath of fresh air because I I really feel like not even just in the spring game did he have a good performance but really the entire summer the entire summer I feel like he's been showing flashes and he he's one of those guys that they have to get going and they going to need some guys to step up like you know big Shawn Washington the Jo transfer that came in a big big body about 64 65 300 something pounds they going to need a lot from him going forward if jacobe Gill Giller is out uh you think about somebody uh like Dominic McKellan who was the number one player in the state in his past class they going to need to get him up to speed and and come in and give him some some rotational time man so uh you know I think Bo Bo Davis is up for the challenge with that D line I I like the way Paris Shan is looking you know I like the way wack is looking I like the way Savon Jones is looking um it's just going to take some time for them to be able to get it all together like Blake Baker wants it man we got to understand man this is his first with this group right and so we will like to see them out there flying around and getting shut outs and things like that stuff Takes Time stuff takes time and I but I like what Blake's trying to do we just got to understand as a process as long as they get it figured out sooner than later which I think you know this going to be their third game going to South Carolina I think they get the Kings fixed out I mean uh I think they get the Kings out and and and and have a good performance out there South Carolina so you think alasu is going to take it I think it's going to be a close one I think it's going to be a close one cuz you got to think about the time zone change it's 11:00 in the morning the game that's different different from their routine uh I think they start off slow but I think they end up winning a game by two possessions I do okay I'm hoping because if this going to go Haywire we going to be in for a long season and and when you listen to BK in the press conference man you can tell that he believes in his football team it's just the small little things the small details that that he wants to see this team get better at you know like the field goal before the half you could tell he was extremely frustrated that they couldn't convert on that special team plate at the end of the half you know what I mean uh some of those that personal foul uh the the the trick play they got they got caught on you know those are the kind of plays that he doesn't want to see his team not be able to convert on man because when you playing against these Elite teams you know they going to go back and watch filming and see these different things that you guys couldn't capitalize on and so they got to get more they got to get more sound on on the defensive side of the ball which I think they will like we just alluded to with Blake biger just being able to go through that process um but that's the frustration I think you seen from BK in the Press confence man so we going to see man I can't wait for next Saturday yeah real quick before we wrap it up I got to give the MVP award I'm going to give it to Kye lazyy cuz he got five catches 60% of his receptions tonight were in that end zone 60% just fathom that sit down let that simmer I think that this passing game is definitely in a spot where quite frankly you haven't seen in a while because you you see Malik and BT go all over the field last year but now G nar's got a little extra oomph I couldn't imagine having your entire 3eed monster back whether it be Chris C J KY just getting them all in in that scheme because now you got the Aaron Anderson who are going to be Juiced up Savon Thomas is looking really Juiced up you got you know potentially Kyle Parker when he comes back from injury I think that there's a lot of pieces offense is getting deep now you just got to get creative sit down watch the film break it down and try to put you know your best match out there for your opponent and I mean shout out to Aaron Anderson man uh he he seems like he's ready to take that next step and he's going to be so critical to that passing game going forward because he going to be that Dynamic piece that's going to be able to get in space and make people miss and and put and and scare defenses when he's motioning out and and when they throwing those bubble passes turn right and now you got Chris Hilton going on the post and you got k l coming over the middle uh it just open up so much for this for this for this team offensively when you got Aaron Anderson playing like that man you can tell he's full of confidence man uh I think he going to have a Big Y I'm excited man appreciate you hopping on you know that we'll be back again September 21st LSU's playing UCLA hopefully we got a win in between now and then we'll be here covering it for you I'm get G to hop on we'll do a little preview real quick though before we hop off give me a little minute on Michigan man Michigan and Texas man hey look I I I was very disappointed in the performers man at home in the big house man they came and planted their flag at the at Midfield it was embarrassing man I know Jim Harbaugh was watching that game and and he was highly disappointed to see how it all played out man I think they got to go with the quarterback origy I thought that's who was going to be the start of the start of the season but they W warn um you you know no disrespect to Warren but I think orgy fits that team better and and and he gives them more of a threat with his legs um and so I think you might see them kind of consider that going forward but uh shout out to Texas man so Kean got them boys rolling out there yeah they look legit I was wondering how they would acclimate to this SEC schedule and right now it looks like they might be able to take it and run the table in their first year Nick pump the breaks at SEC media days he was like Hey this ain't the Big 12 well man he might he might have to revisit that stat here soon if they keep this up man you got to understand man so Kean has done a phenomenal job of recruiting since he's been at Texas man he's been having the top five classes and we all know what kind of office of mind he is man um and that defense is catching up with his offense and when you got a balanced team like that with a Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback and Quinny e uh the sky a limit for Texas man I think they're a team to watch out for it's not easy to go into big house and win at all especially at this point I mean I feel like they would have their juice is Flowing they got the National Championship in the back of their mind like this was really their point yep appreciate every everybody for watching this has been the ver and verdict my guy G Sports you know it yall have a good one
