could TBD be the third best quarterback in the Big 10 somebody out there thinks he could be and what does that mean for the Badgers you are locked on Badgers your daily podcast on the Wisconsin Badgers part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what is going on Badger fans uh every week we come back with you and we talk about comments from the Discord YouTube Twitter things we want to talk about this is lock on Badgers I'm here with Ryan herrings here every single day part of the lockdown podcast Network thank you so so much for tuning in it is game week let's go we have survived sports fans college football fans bachor fans we have survived the long long drought filled summer without football we are here and let's talk about some comments let's talk about some things that are put out there um the first one I wanted to get to was Pro Football Focus uh as Tyler van djk as the number three quarterback in the Big 10 entering the season I but the top six they have down below they have Dylan Gabriel Drew L van djk Miller Moss the USC quarterback will Howard um over at Ohio State Rogers the quarterback up at Washington interesting right it a couple things I want to talk about what what if Tyler vanz is the third best quarterback in the Big 10 is that realistic and what does that mean for the Badgers I want to start with there's a there's certainly a way you can squint your way to it it because the Big 10 quarterback depth chart if you if you did if the Big 10 was one football team right it was the Big 10 was one roster it's its quarterback depth chart would not be as good as other conferences right at the top you have Dylan Gabriel then need have a bunch of it's almost inconceivable that the Big 10 with 18 teams now yeah 18 teams now and USC Penn State Ohio State Michigan Oregon um us see that this is the collection of quarterbacks it's not great so in that sense yeah van djk if van djk is well we saw rard freshman Miami van djk he could be the third best quarterback in this league again you just look at this list the Big 10 is filled with firste quarterbacks guys like um Donovan Rola it's filled with kind of younger quarterbacks that haven't played yet it's filled with transfers in from lower levels guys like Max brosmer it's filled with guys that um outside of like and Gabriel just haven't and they probably Drew Drew a LS Fair like he had 25 or 25 touchdowns two picks last year he didn't push the ball downfield but like he had a good year but for the most part it's kind of a QB wasteline so yeah van could be the third best quarterback in the conference and if that's the case you know in the tight games what's the biggest differentiator outside of luck and by luck I mean injuries turnovers that are weird bounces it's quarterback play that's it this is football it's not it's not difficult the if you have two teams that are are slugging out and are closely matched if you have a Wisconsin in Iowa Wisconsin Nebraska uh Wisconsin Penn State whatever it is Whoever has the better quarterback is going to win typically so it's it's interesting to me that there's a real organization out there that Pro Football Focus that has Van dijke number three in the conference I don't know if I'm there but let's say he's top five well then I mean if if you believe that barring injuries in the trenches this team's going to win nine games and if he's top three maybe more probably not but there's a chance for 10 if he's that good so I think that's super interesting uh let's get some comments again we always man we always do this show once a week it's just comments off Discord Twitter we got JB's in here I want to go there to JB's next um this was off the Discord he said honestly I don't think we have any big 10 All-American players besides Nelson mman Pauling Waller and Rico it got me thinking who would be the surprise guy right so I'm most agree with that list if we're saying who are the most likely all big 10 type guys on this roster obviously Rico wer and but by all big 10 let's a couple things I think it's important to remember because we are in a new era of college football sometimes you got to cycle out a little bit zoom out all big 10 means a lot more now right than it did 10 years ago just because of the new teams in the league it's much harder so all big 10 I'm thinking first team second team third Team all honorable mention even maybe um obviously Rico and Waller they're in that list will Pauling obviously I'm with him on the tackles man I think both the tackles could have a bounceback year I think it's more likely for mman than Nelson I just quite frankly think he's probably a little bit of a better player he's a little bigger I think he's a little functionally stronger I think um he's been a little more consistent he was a little quicker into the system last year didn't have some of the glaring mistakes I think mman is probably likely a little bit better than Nelson so mman I would have above Nelson on the list let me give you two more one on offense and one on defense that I could I could say yeah these guys might be the surprise all big 10 players at some on some level John Pas I think Pas is definitely a guy I mean let's be honest what what do a lot of because these voters aren't looking at every game they're not breaking down film they're not seeing who took on the double team stacked it and shed it and set the edge they're looking at numbers what what numbers are important for voters it's sacks sacks picks yards touchdowns right it's it's the basic counting thing it's the baseball stuff like the basic counting numbers are what voters care about Pas is a guy who could put up six seven sacks this year I I've said it before I think he leads the team I think he gets into the six seven range if he does that it's gonna be hard to keep him off all conference list because that's a counting number that people pay attention to so I would put Pas on this list as a guy I've said it before man traits translate if you can run super fast and you do it at a a big as a big guy and he's 250 Plus pounds he runs 20 plus miles an hour with get off that plays at any level like that plays at the highest level to the lowest level so I think Pi is the guy there and then Jake Renfro I honestly believe Renfro is a guy if healthy and it's gonna be maybe a harder for him because he might not have the notoriety going into the season but if healthy he could be a second third team All Conference Center I mean he was a first team all AAC Center already we've already seen it he was the pivot he was the the lynchpin of a Cincinnati offensive line that helped lead him to the national title or to the playoff game against Alabama he has the pedigree he has the experience he has the talent uh Brady clones raes about him said he's B quote born to play in the Big 10 I think those two guys you could put on your list um aside from that that's a pretty good list like it is more difficult to make it tywi Walker is a guy who potentially could sneak into some backend lists if he has the type of year we think he could but he's gonna be in a time share so it's going to be harder for him to pick up those numbers um we let off the show up and talking about Tyler Van Dyke being the third best quarterback in the conference maybe if you squint all big 10 type guy honorable mention I don't know that but I think it's a good comment from JB that's where I would have it all right coming up we're going to talk a little bit about uh recruiting defense limit at high level and are The Vibes good plus confidence level with Alabama but first this is just a quick live show we do need to get into our new friends of the show over at ultimate college football coach name down but he said other than James Thompson this was a YouTube comment other than James Thompson injury and the Freshman linebacker from the dtas which is Thomas hyberger everything is trending positive I was thinking about that um yeah like I I I would say everything right because I think I was trying to think it's so easy right to come out of spring super super amp Super Pump super excited everybody is in the best shape and I think a lot of programs are like that I would say mman being nicked up going into Clos practices makes me a little trepidacious there's a little bit of geez I hope he's good to go type of a thing um I thought it took a little long for van djk to click and I also thought there were some issues hitting the Deep balls um connecting on deep shots vertical shots pushing the ball down the field I thought there was some issues there which to me were related to the secondary looked really good the receivers being a little unable to separate and some inconsistencies at the quarterback spot so if I'm nitpicking I think you're right most of the Vibes are good but it outside of the Thompson injury it would be the ability to push the ball downfield the mman getting nicked up thing makes me a little nervous um and then some of our receivers separating I think those were the other ones but aside from that I think people on the defensive line Brandon Lane Hills Neil I thought all looked pretty good I thought the linebackers looked really good I thought the coverage in the secondary looked great um Pauling and tretch looked really good running backs look good I think there are a lot of good vibes I agree with you um that's also true for many programs in the country though going into week one there's a lot of good vibes out there and's see this was from Kurt 244 he said is Wisconsin ever going to recruit defensive lineman at a high level I can't see it happening it's going to be a recruit and develop thing I agree with you I mean it depends on what you consider a high level Kurt like is a high level two four stars and a five star in a year is it multiple Blue Chip guys like Oregon's been doing no Wisconsin's not going to do that they're not gonna be able to it's not because they don't want to it's not because they're it's not gonna be because their preferences to recruit and develop I guarantee you they would want to to pick the to get their pick of the litter from the defensive line prospects every year absolutely but they're not going to fundamentally you're not going to out recruit B Georgia um Notre Dame Ohio State and you can go down the list there's about eight or nine of those programs you're not going to beat them out for the elite defense alinan consistently maybe you get one once in a while but you're going to have to recruit and then develop which is why I think it's critically important that you get the right coach in there and the right strength and development program I think they've done both jury jury's out I really like the Whit low hire on defensive line coming from the service cies I think I I just think that um you're going to come in with a certain type of accountability of culture understanding what it takes to be a defense lineman leadership and then I I have a lot of show some Brady Collins and the proof is in the pudding with them like you see what they were able to do with players so I think you have the strength in development you have the recruiting part down uh but no I agree with you like they're never going to recruit at the highest level defense line which is why I think you need to take more shots too I think you need more more darts to at the dartboard I said in a previous show you need to get four bodies a cycle sometimes at the defensive line spot because a lot of those guys are prospects they're raw they're bigger guys they develop differently you got to get more more chops with the axe right whatever you want to call it you got to get more scratch off lottery tickets on the defense line you just have to get a few more because you're never going to get the the four star guy that is already polished or the five star guys is already polished because those guys are going to go to those top eight to 10 12 schools whoever they are all let's bring up some comments here those were kind of saved up comments we had let's see what we're all saying in the chat again this is just kind of the community show we do it once a week U your comments we throw them in there we talk about it we chop it up we just sit around a we you know what it is we sit around a virtual campfire and we talk to Badgers that's all it is we're all sitting around this virtual campfire talking Badgers Jason Tim Happy game week let's go Jason let's cook Matthew Anderson uh Pi is gonna be her big 2.0 that's tough because I've already pegged lafel as herbig 2.0 who does Pas remind us of see because herbig was a little smaller a little more low Center gravity little different body type pias that's a great one maybe I don't know I don't know if I have a great comp off the top my head for pi but if he has listen if he has the impact that herbig has absolutely um let's see will Hannah I will believe third best when I see it I do think he can play some solid ball though yeah that's fair I I'll believe it too I don't I don't know if go there um I think it's also reflective of the quarterback depth chart in the Big 10 as I said but will goes on to say if he's third best 10 wins is possible I agree because if your quarterback is like if your quarterback is third best and you know Oregon is g to be one maybe Penn State's two that mean I mean that means you have a quarterback advantage in every other game um yeah it's it's interesting badon borell says he could be second best but mid as well yeah I think there's a a big variance with them I think it two is the absolute ceiling um he could be 12th best because there's inconsistencies there in his history and some injury stuff so I I think there's somewhere I I think six maybe five somewhere in that range is reasonable and then you have a top three top third is um top 33rd percentile whatever you want to say them fumbling over onwards type a quarterback in the Big 10 and then you have a pretty solid backup that makes your quarterback room if you believe I mean Braden lock is at the very least a solid number two that makes your quarterback room one of the better quarterback rooms in the Big 10 uh able to go out there go toe-to-toe with most starters and have a backup that's capable if injuries happen you could be in a way worse spot is my point Brian strutz if he stands up this season we go 10 and two let's go I love it let's cook um JB SEC has the best quarterbacks by far this year yeah no listen no argument there uh as he said cook Beck milroe Dart all better than everyone in the Big 10 not named Gabriel yeah it's it's not a good quarterback year in the Big 10 I don't think anybody would argue that anybody at all would argue that uh Matthew Anderson times in uh pas if we're talking about maybe a surprise guy that makes an all big 10 team I agree there let's keep going um any other comments in here Jeffrey deander says how's the swag on the defense do they have the intimidation confidence factor I think that's I would I'd be blowing smoke if I could tell you yes or no I talking to some of the linebackers some of the people I was there for in Platville it seems like they're ready for this year see but it's like Tyson said you gotta plan until you get punched in the mouth I think if you talk to just about any team this year any any real team the defense is going to say yeah we're ready to go I think we got to see it we got to see him stand up get punched in the mouth a little bit get back up play a good offense and we're not really gonna know until week three um week one and two are going to be a little more fer out games we'll know in week three we'll know we'll know pretty quick with this team it's going to be a good lit litmus test um let's see anybody else here Steve kneebone said we should be offering all the defense Lin weekend yeah I mean you just got to rebuild the numbers right it's not deep enough right now and it's not going to get deep enough until you land four or five in a couple Cycles in a row quite frankly all right we're GNA wrap it up there again just a good show to get some thoughts and comments in uh really do appreciate it she said Bucky said Neil had offers from everyone I think he can get in the conversation soon for defensive lineman yeah Neil I for a show that's going to release tomorrow I did the 12 most important Badgers on the on the team this year not the best but the most important I think I had Neil at five uh I have to go back to my list but Neil's incredibly important for this year because once you lose Thompson Neil's like your one returning presence guy I mean Barton I guess as well but Neil I think has a little bit more upside there Neil's incredibly important this year so on Wisconsin we will definitely talk tomorrow and the next day and the day after that and the day after that and the day after that because it is game week I cannot wait some really good interviews coming up this week I will get a western Michigan guy on I think re's coming on I think Brian's coming on I think coach Anderson is coming on um yeah there's a few more too I think Teddy Gerard is coming on who's a 20 quarterback from Georgia they're recruiting so a lot coming up this week on Wisconsin really do appreciate it let's go
