in a row in this rivalry Graham can make it four in a row what's it going to take tonight for the Beavers to get off the snide I think they're just going to have to come out and you know play a little more efficient than they did last year you know they had some injur on the Graham side that they should have took advantage of this year we got a freshman quarterback probably the first time ever we've had a freshman quarterback ever start for Bluefield uh first game of the season um he's have to come out you know be calm be poised he's got the talent he's got an arm uh we just got to come out not make mistakes take advantage of their mistakes and just don't give up a big play yeah we're excited to see about Max Simpson The Freshman quarterback that you alluded to Rusty as both teams with uh both small rosters this year and both with Big Time Playmakers gone RJ Harrison sincere Fields Gerard Way Bryson Redmond all gone for Bluefield uh Clem Jennings gone for Graham but both these teams trying to do the math and figure out how long you'd been the head coach I think it's your 39th year I was told there'd be no math in any of this so I hope I'm right but uh 39 years and you've seen a little bit of everything haven't you I've seen a lot of everything and U it's it's just different how the society's changed and uh how you've got to adjust a little bit with your coaching style um you don't put up with anything but you've got to be a little more patient and uh you know in the old days you had enough numbers where you could just run people off and it didn't really matter and and you had a little more structure at home now some some of the structure at home is not as good so the basically the teaching part is still the same and now it's either do it this way or don't play or do it this way or run but you don't have to holler and yell to get it accomplished and uh I've worked on patience a little bit with these kids of today and uh because sometimes if you holler at them you've lost them and as long as they get the job done in the right way it's all that matters if you had a time machine and you went back to 86 your first season would you foresee how this had played out getting to this season here going into uh the Graham game in 2024 no way I mean you know you start out and I know I I wanted to coach and uh it's been a great experience you know both ups and downs that's life but but it's been really uh what I've always wanted to do and I still love doing it and I was thinking few months ago I said you know if I had millions of dollars I had yachts and I had mansions and all that or I could do what would I choose I'd rather do this you know what I wouldn't want to go to a mansion I don't want to get on a yacht I like doing what I do so uh that's kind of sold me on what I've done throughout my whole life talking with Fred Simon ahead of kickoff with the gram gmen here on ni Cole Chevy Coach's Corner uh last year late in the year you picked up your 300th win I think that was kind of hovering over you for a few weeks there in that season that's kind of a monkey off your back going into this year correct yeah and and I didn't really approach it that way maybe other people did I just wanted to win enough to get in the playoffs and you know that's what disappointed me about the year was um I thought we had a good enough team that had we got in the playoffs kind of similar to this year we'll have a shot to win at all in the doublea and our schedule's brutal it was last year and there was just a early in the season we lost some games that we definitely could have won with a break or two and uh hopefully this year when we have that chance for a break or two it comes our way cuz those are tough situations that uh if you win those games and get in I feel like in doua we can compete with anybody in state yeah we were talking just a few moments ago before we uh started recording your first five I I don't know if anyone in the state of West Virginia is facing a tougher uh start to their schedule beginning tonight with Graham and then next week with Princeton but by the end of the year if you are in the playoffs you're going to be very battle tested we have we would have seen everything all kinds of talent teams that can run teams that can pass and I guarantee what we'll see in the playoffs won't be any better they may be as good but they won't be any better and that's what the overall goal is to win enough and hopefully all but to win enough to where we're in the playoffs and can win it all Fred Simon here on the col Chevy Coaches Corner kickoff coming up here in the moment um it's uh Bluefield West Virginia Virginia football it's kind of like NASCAR the Super Bowls week one with Beaver Graham or Graham Beaver uh whichever side you're on what does it mean to not only you you played in this game you've coached in this game for a very long time but these kids they played together growing up in peeee a lot of them have kind of shifted back and forth but this rivalry just means something different to these kids right oh well no matter if a team is considered a heavy favorite or not whether it's us or them it's always a tight game because you can bet on one thing both teams will come in ready to play and of all the games this is the game that everybody will play hard what do you see on film with Graham I know they're very athletic but do you see anything that maybe you could exploit or take advantage of early in this one don't know about offensively uh because they're they're very talented you know they can line up and and and cover you with their defense they're big enough and strong enough to do a good job inside we'll have to kind of play a little chess game early um got an idea but sometimes that doesn't work out so we'll play a little chess early to see if we can find something I think the key for us is keep them out of the end zone as much as possible till we get our Nick and what we want to do and defensively uh I feel good about our defense but they're so athletic that you can be in the right place at the right time and they have enough athletes that they may make a heck of a play what our players got to understand as long as you're in the right place it'll happen to us just as much as it does them so uh but they are very athletic they have a lot of skilled kids sincere Fields uh Gone RJ Harriston gone they're playing across town at Bluefield state uh Bryson Redmond going to play baseball in college you had that two system quarterback throughout the year last year and RJ was a threat almost any play those guys are gone you've got a new quarterback back there you had a little bit of a quarterback battle in preseason but you got some of the same names back who can Beaver fans expect to hear more of this year and and maybe a name or two that they hadn't heard in the past well I think you know you never know but I think Jeff King is very talented he's a running back receiver young man I think he'll be fine top Patton running up inside there can can he's a load and if we can exploit him and get a physical running game I think we're good Willis Wilson kesan Smith jamarius Smith JoJo Campbell um I think those guys um you I think I mentioned kesan too I'm not sure but it's make sure but uh those guys now we're not big but they can fly they're quick if you get them in open field um they're going to call problems now getting them there we'll see but uh I feel very confident if we can get him in the open field that we'll move the ball and um be okay and you know that freshman quarterback uh Max has worked really hard since he was in sixth grade a lot of camps lot of a lot of he's worked as hard as anybody on the team but he's a freshman and you know I don't know you going into this game I just want him to be uh just be smart and don't try to win the game because as a freshman know maybe down the road there when you get older as a junior senior um you can win games but not right now just be very patient and uh just do the best you can with the job you got to do when's the last time you had a freshman starting a quarterback we've never had one and not even Rusty no but but but Rusty now shoot and will Cole had we had him from Graham would have had a shot but still that's it's tough and uh you know had we had some probably more older kids that played quarterback before I don't know he'd be the one but you know plays out the way it is and um here we go we're excited about tonight Graham Gman Bluefield beavers once again this will be the 998th meeting all time you've been a part of over 40 of them this will be your 39th year as head coach and I saw this tidbit in the news our friend Tyler from loot press wrote it and it stuck out to me following a 4- six season the last time you had a 4- six season you went 14-0 won a State title obviously a long way to go between now and then but that's a good sign well you know I'm a numbers person too and we want to we won it basically you know 04 84 now we're in 2024 but again we we're a little bit different as in um our age as far as you know a freshman quarterback where we had a senior quarterback and our skilled kids were a lot of seniors there and so we'll see uh would I love to do it sure it's been uh you know it's tough when you work your butt off and you have a losing season and um but we're still working hard and again the ultimate goal goals to win it all so you know we'll we'll get out there and give it our best and uh I'm looking forward to the game Fred Simon Coach's Corner on the reair of the video productions broadcast that was on there a little earlier and uh coach Simon's excited about this young group Rusty you played for Coach Simon uh he's in his 39th season and tonight's the 98th uh matchup between these two schools uh going back to the time when he was an assistant coach and a player he's been a part of more than half of these so he's seen a lot and uh he really likes his Simpson kid the max Simpson freshman quarterback yeah that says a lot about Max because coach doesn't play play a whole lot of freshman early on especially the first game of the year against Graham which is the big Rival game but I think Max proved during you know camping in the two scrimmages that he's more than capable of taking the Reigns of the offense and running with it scoreboard says we're a little over 10 minutes from kickoff both teams wrapping up their warm-ups we'll have coin toss coming up here shortly Rusty you've got some keys to the game for both teams let's see what you got let's start with the Bluefield beavers on the offense the key is going to be the offensive line led by seniors Grady Woods Justin King and all state player Jaden Francisco the Beavers offensive line will have to be efficient in the blocking game against a Graham gmen defense that is athletic and very aggressive the Beavers show two different styles of offense in their scrimmage last week against Abington the first was a two and three back set from under center that is more slow and methodical with the intentions of wearing down the other team's D and keeping the other opponent's offense on the side line the second is a shotgun offense that looks to get the ball out in space led by freshman QB Max Simpson who throws a good ball if given time either way the o line needs to give the offense an opportunity to be successful over to the defens side the key is going to be reading their keys a successful defense is one that understands their assignments and executes the game plan based off reading their keys defending against a spread offense isn't as complicated if all 11 Defenders know what they're supposed to do to do and trust that their teammates do their jobs the best way to stop a bully is punching them in the mouth now we on the Special Teams the key going to be flipping the field in big games there will be mistakes when that happens the Beavers need to use their special teams to flip the field and pin the Graham offense deep now let's slide over to the home team Graham Gman on their offense key is going to be speed in Space the gmen have a lot of options on offense and they are all fast and athletic Floyd Isabel Palmer Edwards Graham fix and he can all take it to the house if they get to the second level of the Beaver defense look for the gmen to run a fast-paced Tempo offense to wear down the beaver defense early now under their defense being aggressive led by the son of Bluefield beaver Legend and great who shares the same name yo Isabel plays with a reckless abandon that leads an aggressive gram defense that flies around they aren't afraid to get in man coverage with no high safety and send the house to get in the opponent's Back Field which can make it difficult to find running lanes for the backs and hard for the passing game to get going especially for a freshman QB starting for the Beavers this style aggressive play is a high risk High reward let's see if it gives the Beavers offense fits lastly on the Special Teams another Legacy player will be key for the gram gmen special teams Dylan Nash grandson of Hall of Fame quarterback concour quarterback and long time Beaver assistant coach Jeff Bulls he is deadly inside the 40 he can be the biggest X Factor in this game by using his legs on kickoffs punts and field goals and extra points thank you Rusty it's keys of the game for both teams man I I think we're going to see a very contrasting style tonight I think like you said Graham's going to speed it up I think coach Simon's going to try to slow it down to slow down that potent offense uh Graham's got a bunch of guys back uh starting with Dalton Roberts a quarterback he can sling it last year close to 2,000 yards passing and that was with uh clemet running for almost 1,800 yards now you don't have that back so I kind of suspect uh that Roberts is going have to keep an eye usually week one anyway but especially when it's humid like tonight that's going to be something coin is tossed and it looks as if Bluefield may have won the toss we'll wait for the official call here technology is just not helping us out I think the weather definitely has done a little bit of that we had some internet issues earlier and so it looks like okay so Graham won the toss and has deferred to the second half Graham will defend the scoreboard in and they will kick two Bluefield here to begin this one the 98th meeting all time between these two schools Bluefield has the alltime edge but the last three have belong to the gmen Rusty yeah hopefully that changes night for the Beavers you know Graham led by Tony Palmer as a head coach you know he always has a arsenal of weapons to choose from um you know they're going to be dangerous all season I don't think they have that playmaker like they have in the last couple years but I think they got plenty of depth to make it very hard for the Beavers but I think if the Beavers come out you know don't let the nerves get to them if they're hydrated like you said because that always seems to be a factor first game of the year come out don't make mistakes just keep moving the ball get points when you can I think the Beavers will to be successful here come the gmen [Music] last year deep playoff run again finished the year 12- two it seems like you know Tony Palmer was a very successful player with graham won a State title back in the late 80s and it has seemed as almost as soon as he took the head coaching job at Graham the tides flipped yeah Tony does a did a great job early on as far as getting a coaching staff around him that know the game he got got a lot of bigname players big name on his staff with you know J Bren elizabelle Rick CIO who for beavers um he's got you know a Quon of coaches he got all kinds of weapons you know he's done a great job since he's taken over and I just don't see it any ending anytime soon Graham arching Ben making their way off the field Bluefields return team ready to go JoJo Campbell Jeff King back around the 10 to five yard line here come the gmen Dylan Nash senior kicker was almost automatic whether it's the Pat or Phil goals or pting last year and he can definitely boot the football as he teas it up middle of the field at the 40 almost 8:00 here the oldtimers remember that's usually where this thing will get started mid 70s no Breeze and hopefully the rain holds off the rest of the [Music] night Nash about two and a half yards off the [Applause] [Music] football the 98th Battle of the Bluefields is underway ball comes up short it will drop at the 15 and JoJo Campbell lets it go out of bounds wisely and it'll be first and 10 Bluefield and the 35 kick travels out of bounds so a kick out of bounds Bluefield pretty good field position here to begin this first drive withfield driving right to left on your radio dial from the open end of the stadium towards the scoreboard here in the first quarter couple of substitutions before the first snap Rusty a couple of guys in and out as the Simpson show begins here in Bluefield it's going to be interesting to see what Bluefield comes out in as far as their offense if they're going to go under center with more of a two or three back set if they're going to spread it out see what they can do with him in the shotgun ma Simpson 6' 175lb freshman first freshman quarterback in a very long time if ever trips tight to the formation to the right side wide receiver in the near side pot pass out into Flats it was behind the intended receiver Kean Smith and luckily for Bluefield Malachi ELO didn't take that one to the house as he was right there yeah I think it was a smart the offensive line allowed the defensive line through untouched which to him is a key that is probably going to be a screen underneath he turned and looked and found the back who had turned his back to him was going to catch the ball took on a dead Sprint was able to hit him before he got going which resulted in a fourth and long Smith and Smith jamarius and kesan back away into the 35 snap is good wobbly kick to the near side and it's dropped drop still on the deck it hops right from kesan to jamarius and that is a huge break for the Beavers it will be first down and 10 Bluefield from their own 37 something the beaver's 33 yd punt beaver's team was going to have to work on is if the ball's on the ground don't try and always pick it up and run with it just get on top of it we saw it early on on a bad snap the kicker tried to pick it up and try to do something with it and was not able to on this one the the P returner muffed it tried to pick up run with it luckily for the Beavers getting probed tonight that's good sign you know it's very similar what we saw last year throughout the year Rusty Bluefields defense really kept them in a lot of ball games until the offense kind of at the next level and then the pros you want to see the quarterbacks either get out of bounds or get down very smart play by Edwards third they Mark him down at the nine so third and goal from there yeah great play by him looks like he's dropping to the curl area reading he sees that there's nobody in his area he's watching QB's eyes QB takes off field he's able to read interact and keep get in the end zone little more manageable here for Nash this one a 21 yd attempt from just off center snap is good kick in around it's blocked someone got piece of it and we're still scoreless I believe that may have been Willis Wilson he came off the far Edge and another big play by this Beaver D let's check the replay on video productions that is the play before but I believe it was Wilson who got they got to work these Kinks out and that's for both sides there have been early timeouts used that you usually don't want to you want to try and save all your timeouts for the end of the half in case you know you want to get a you know some late points you know this 98th Edition history made last year with Grahams 14 to9 win first time Graham had won three in a row over the Beavers in this stored rivalry they're looking to do four in a row here tonight but I tell you what it's it's very similar last year we we kind of thought going in that Graham was the better team overall right Bluefield battled late had opportunities to win that one was up at the half if you remember back to last year right but that late touchdown uh gave Graham the win and I really think it's going to come down to one or one or maybe even two small mistakes here in this second half as both teams now with the uh shower still falling I think have reverted blue Bluefield had the Run game in mind coming in now Graham's kind of reverted to that as well I'll tell you something we haven't talked about all night and it may have been a big factor in this game is the Graham Gman losing Penn State commit Daniel Jennings in offseason who transferred to Princeton I think you put somebody like that if you watched the game last night with Princeton and capital jins is a playmaker on defense he's just a unbelievable raw pass rusher you know probably wouldn't see a whole lot of pass rush with the Beavers offense tonight but it just makes a difference on the defensive side and then if you throw him on the on the offense you can put him in the back field with your brenal Isabel and that'd be a heck of a one-w punch if you get under Center and just try and you know you know get inch or you know yard after yard yeah and and you know we all know that Jennings is going to go play at the next level more likely as a defensive end or even an outside linebacker spot but you hit it on the head Rusty uh him in the back field last year when Clemens went out right we kind of didn't know much about him and he came off and I think maybe the second or third carry he had last year he popped off a big run and we're like who is this guy so he I think he could make a difference in this ball game on the offensive side a little bit more than the defensive side because Graham's really trying to keep everything in tight and not really giving uh Gage Palmer out on the edge an opportunity to do anything Gage Palmer I think is filling that defensive end rle really nicely I think he's going to be a top- notch players especially on the defensive end he had 30 tackles last year and I think he's sent in about four five already tonight so this thing is shaping up to be a nice end as the beaver band plays behind me like we said Grandma's won the last three this one led by Bluefield all time 69 26 and two and uh tyres gone Shan Hughes I think was an underrated player last year he's G from line linebacker so both teams just still trying to figure figure out who they got what they've got and where it doesn't really get any easier for either team Bluefield will be right back here next Friday hosting Princeton Graham will be hosting GX that's not an easy matchup GX always a tough team out of the Mountain Empire District uh they were District foes there for a few years when Graham was in the Mountain Empire District so they're very familiar with each other but that'll be an interesting one that one will be played Thursday here at 7 so there'll be uh a 7:00 Thursday game and then uh we are scheduled to play at 7:30 on Friday here against Princeton so uh plenty of gram football also we want to allude to the fact that gram football will be also in video productions this year uh Brock to get together in the coaches room and they're just going to try and figure out what worked in the first half what didn't work in the first half try and go back to what worked and then try and Coach up what didn't work and try and eliminate the mistakes that that occurred in the first half I think you just got to calm everyone down tell them you know it's it's the first game there's a big crowd but you know they put their pads on the same way we do let's go out let's execute what we worked on all off seon and let's try and win this ball game yeah a few a few mistakes but I think both teams have kind of got their nerves uh in check for the most part the delay of game has affected both teams uh especially without the play Clocks uh tonight um not sure what happened there they were working the other day I we say that um but both teams having a little bit of trouble with that as you know back in the day there were no play Clocks like you alluded to a few moments ago Rusty the quarterback had to watch the back judge for his hand signal and kind of had to have that in the back of his mind and that's tough for quarterbacks now CU almost any field you go to you're going to have a play clock and uh I know they're not making excuses but that it's definitely something uh that we'll keep an eye on here early in the second half uh Wesley mckenny our favorite Sid from Concord chiming in a couple of scores Wheeling Central James Monroe in the fourth Central leading Monroe 21-6 and at halftime Oak Hill leads Nicholas County 14 to nothing we'll see both those teams late in the year we'll see James Monroe here in the last Thursday night the regular season and then we've got oakill here uh middle part of the season so both those teams looking to be formidable opponents this year as well I thought I thought Roberts was poised his one pass that he had an opportunity luckily he wasn't picked off but that was I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that throw came right when the range started it did and I think I think had he had a drive football uh he may be S to nothing Grand right now yeah I haven't seen him made make a bad decision as far as making his reads you know he's read the Beavers defense he saw a corner early on you know run with a Streaker down the field and he threw it underneath to a guy that ran a hitch route put the ball in his playmaker's hands and allowed him to try and make a play he's done a really good job also with his feet you know he's felt the pressure coming off the edge and there wasn't a force up the Middle with the Beavers interior the line so he was able to work get up field and was really smart as far as sliding to prevent himself from taking contact but you don't see a whole lot in the high school game I I thought Jaden FR Cisco is doing a good job getting the Back Field Omari Hill uh as good as advertised if you get a chance to see this gram team Omari Hill is going to be one you keep an eye on because he was Defensive this game's heading I really think it's it's going to come down to maybe one or two plays towards the end of this one yeah I think if both teams just don't give up the big play I think both teams St a chance of winning this ball game I like what the beavers have done on the defensive side they've been aggressive with their D line they have not allowed a whole lot of big run plays you know they try to get some pressure on the QB which has forced him to use his legs even though it's been successful for the Graham uh offense but I think on the Graham side I think if the weather stays the way that it does I think they'll be able to use the pass game a little bit more which probably give the Beavers defense a little bit of a fit because I think there's a little bit of inexperience in the secondary I think there's a little bit you know guys not on the same page as far as what they're supposed to do in coverage but if the if the Beavers defensive line can at least still put some pressure and contain the running game from get going I think it's going to be a really good ball game and a good chance for beavers to win I haven't taken a look at the radar but the rain has stopped at the moment kind of like you alluded to Rusty if it stays like this I see Graham opening and back up in the passing game yeah I don't think Bluefield is going to change anything I think they want to run the football in between the tackles maybe get out on the edge every once in a while yeah I think the Beavers tried to see what they had with as far as a passing game early and I think the Graham defense was just too aggressive they got too much speed and the athletes in their secondary and also in the middle of the field at the linebacker position I think the QB was smart just throwing the really well you know getting pressure on the QB preventing running or lanes for the running backs to get into secondary did a pretty good job as far as getting back getting hands on ball thought they did a good job considering a lot of times they were forced and put in bad positions and really only give up 10 points on the night you know there's no such thing as gloried win but we'll take that that's something to build upon on the offensive side you know there's a lot that needs to be worked on a lot of communication issues a lot of guys not knowing what they're doing you know I think that you know that needs to be needs to change in the offseason I think going in this game you're going to have mistakes but have this been mistake something needs to change you know maybe a little bit more time in the classroom you know making sure these guys know what they're doing in practice you know you know having somebody if somebody gets hurt you know fake an injury throw someone in there just to see what they know because as you saw tonight we had guys go down and they're looking around trying to get someone in and the guy comes in they're looking around with their hands up cuz they're confused you know those are things that that are fixed through coaching and I think they will fix that you know you know got to get through next week that's going to be a very very tough game for the Beavers Princeton is very very talented especially with the addition of Daniel Jennings Penn State commit um I saw a lot of positives that there a lot of things I can I see with Max that he can grow upon you know if you look at the stat sheet it's not going to be impressive but you got to consider it's the first time ever in Beaver history that a freshman quarterback has ever started a game a Varity game yeah so for him to go out there you know he's going to make mistakes there was a lot of times where you know a young quarterback would have threw a ball and forced and he didn't he just he ate it he took the sack a lot of times he he just tucked it and tried to get what he can a lot of times he saw Defenders getting aggressive and throw going to where the ball was supposed to be go because it was only one route that he was supposed to throw out and he just threw it away from him to prevent it from being a turnover so I think he has a lot of potential he has a very very high ceiling we just got to get everybody else on the same page got to get the offense going you know it's it's a long season it's a it's a marathon on a Sprint you know we're still you know the change of the system last year we'll still get points from this game then now this is the triple game unlike before with the Chang in Western going two four classifications I I really think Ma Simpson's going to be all right uh Tai Patton what a night he had both sides of the ball would have loved to seen him upright a little bit more he he dealt with some some cramp issues uh Jaden Francisco oh unbelievable great night by him as well JoJo Campbell kesan Smith Jeff King they're all going to be huge players this year I'm really excited about watching the remaining nine plus games of this Bluefield beaver football season for the gmen DL Roberts is going to have a huge year no absolutely I really think he's going to have a huge year and I like that new aspect that Graham's throwing in Gabe Lily and that wildcat look you're giving Roberts a breather in the middle of a drive right and Lily really he was back there a few times he wanted to throw the football so I I think he's going to be able to sling it around a little bit Blake Graham Chris Edwards uh Eli we saw tonight Campbell fix all those guys are going to be threats uh for Graham this year Omari Hill uh I think he's on Pace running the Wildcat he was doing it uh both sides of the ball I think he's going to have a big year too rusty yeah Francisco had a big game tonight uh was impressed with him on the defensive line he was very hard to block he was able to get in the back field plenty of times put pressure you know he was able to stringing out a lot of plays you know he pretty much was a oneman show on his side of the defense and and then also for Lily you know very impressed with the junior you come out you could see him on both sides of the ball like Zach said there's probably a couple different guys we could have chose uh from Graham especially Edwards thought he had a big game and made a big huge block on that touchdown reception U I think they're going to be you know very hard to beat as the season goes along 10 nothing the final one last time a Nash 38 yd field goal and a Roberts to Eli touchdown pass from 31 yards out both those scores coming in the fourth quarter it was scoreless until that fourth Bridgeport who I saw put up a big number tonight against banon upshire um Princeton has a lot I watched them last night you know Daniel J Daniel J KS is a monster on the defens side there's a reason why Penn State who usually has one of the top defenses in the country offered him and was able to get him to commit before his Junior season um very raw very athletic has a huge quick First Step that you haven't seen in a very long time and then also on the offense you got Barker who returns was a sophomore last year I've watched him uh videos posted online he's put in the work in the offseason he's went to some QB camps he's improved his footwork which what I thought was one of the things that hurt him last year uh definitely a good decision maker throws a good ball and the running back who was hard to beat then you got the Moser kid um they're going to be tough they're going to be very tough for the Beavers I think the Beavers are going to have to be like a goldfish short turn memory you know forget it move on let's watch film let's get better and let's you know try and come out and maybe it'll rain next week well they all the old adage in football especially is how you get better
