on because we've got a lot of visitors here and we're so glad that you're with us this morning um I want to take just a few minutes to we're going to spend a few moments in prayer but as we do that I want to ask right now if you're a teacher in this space would you raise your hand or a counselor there you go or a school administrator keep those hands up look around see them okay all right if you Education would you stand this morning all of you stand for me there you go look at this stay standing for me for a minute okay if you're near someone who's a student would you maybe hold a you can grab a hand of someone next to you because this is all students over here um put a hand on someone near you uh we're going to spend just a minute and we're going to lift up our students in prayer Lord Jesus we thank you for the opportunity to gather in this space this morning we thank you for the opportunity to worship you to sing praises to your name God I thank you that we can pray out loud without fear of our lives and this morning I lift up this group that stands in this space with us this morning some of them are School of ministrators and counselors some of them are teachers who spend day in and day out educating our children some of them are crossing guards who make sure that our kids get to to work safely some of them many of them are students who are at various levels of education and over the last couple of weeks and the next few weeks these students are going back to school and these teachers and these administrators and crossing guards and God I pray that this would be an incredible school year for them Lord I pray for some maybe they've already met teachers and they're not sure they like that teacher God I pray that they would give that teacher a chance and God that maybe that teacher would chill out a little bit and then be in a good situation I don't know what it needs to be but God I pray that you would work in the midst of that I pray that our students would study well this year that they would engage with their friends well this year that they would as I tell my kids all the time make good choices this year God I pray that um as they serve you that they would um take that to their schools this year and be a light in probably some pretty dark spaces in friend circles that they are part of God I pray that they would look for the ones who need someone to come alongside of them and to be a voice of Hope use our students and our teachers and our administrators to be a light in dark spaces God I thank you for these students and I pray your blessings upon them this school year and your protection upon them this school year Lord we lift up those who geve today the Francis family and the bloom family who have lost loved ones this week and I pray that you would be with them as they no doubt grieve in their hearts and they're going through this process of loss and celebration of life and all of the things but God would your peace pour out upon them today God for those who are ill and can't be with us are with us online I pray that you would be with them today touch their bodies their hearts and their minds may they be encouraged today Lord Jesus for those who walk into this space today carrying a burden that they aren't quite sure they can tell anyone I pray that you would meet them right there in the midst of that struggle and that you would remind them that you come alongside of them that you navigate this with them and Lord Jesus as we worship this morning I I pray that you would speak to our hearts today that this wouldn't just be a Sunday where we show up to see some some of our amazing students get baptized but God this is yes it's a pivotal moment in their lives but God would it be a moment in our lives too where we can say we encountered you today and may we be different because of our encounters with you we love you Lord Jesus we give you the praise and the thanks and the glory in your name church I'll give up my front row seat any day I uh got relegated to the second row today and uh I'm thankful for that and I don't know if you ever do this I do it from time to time and and I it's not something I can tell you guys to do all at the same time because it wouldn't work but every once in a while I would encourage you to not sing said no Pastor ever um but just listen yeah listen to the voices of the people it's a powerful thing to be reminded that I am a part of something so much bigger than myself and today uh if you are new to real life welcome you are catching a glimpse of some great things that God is up to um here at real life and through real life I asked Christy to have every all the the the people a part of Education to stand for a reason I wanted you to see the number of young people amen who are a part of real life praise God and I don't know what God's up to I just know that God's stirring our young people today right and we get to be a part of uh really special thing consequence uh of that and that is baptism uh today we get to um not just observe but we get to be a part of the baptism of two young ladies who have got some things to share uh about why they being baptized today but um before we get them in the water today I've got a few things that I want to share with them and I've got some questions to ask them and I would ask that every one of you that you would listen well to the questions that I will be asking them uh that you would listen well to the things that I will be reminding them of because for those of us in this space and online who have been baptized before these services are great reminders of what it is we got ourselves into that day when we either got in the waters of baptism or we they were poured over us or they were sprinkled on us but I would encourage you all to reflect and in a way that you would remember your baptism and maybe today would be a moment where a line gets drawn in the sand and you say you know what it's it's been a while since I was at that point and today um I think I I need to re up I need to remember I would encourage you at the end of the service at some point that maybe for those of you who have been baptized that you would come up to these Waters and you would just touch them and remind yourselves of the Waters of baptism um these waters are are are not um miraculous in and of themselves um it's water out of the tap I ran a hose and filled the baptistry um yesterday and um but what makes the Waters of baptism special is not their their chemical makeup it's that God meets us here right that's right and that God does something right in the waters of baptism God that we can never do for ourselves so I want to introduce you to two young ladies I would like pton Renee Wilson to come up here and I would also like Elizabeth AKA Ella Amelia Joyce Morgan to come up here um people need to move around and jockey for position bump people out of their seats please do so um if we have a melee here that's okay God will do things so hear these words ladies I'm going to say some things for you to listen to and you're going to respond I'm going to say you believe this or you whatever um pay attention to this we've talked about this kind of stuff you know it I'm doing so they can remember right so it's about you but it's about them too but friends and family baptism is the sign seal of the New Covenant of Grace right the new way that things are going to be done because of Jesus right the significance of which is made clear by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans when he wrote or don't you know that all of us were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death we were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father we too may live a new life if we have been United like this in his death we will certainly be also be re be United with him in his resurrection right the earliest and simp statement of Christian faith and belief into which you two are being baptized today is a statement that we call the Apostles Creed which reads as follows we believe in God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and Earth and in Jesus Christ his only son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary suffered under Pontius pilot was crucified dead and buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty from then and there he will come to judge the living and the dead we believe in the Holy Spirit the Holy Church of Jesus Christ the communion of saints the Forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and the life Everlasting will you to be back baptized into this faith if so would you answer we will good do you acknowledge Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and do you realize that he now saves you if so answer we do will you obey God's holy law will and keep his Commandments walking in them all all the days of your life if so answer we will now church do you welcome these into the richness of who we are together do you commit to live life with them encouraging them discipling them if they find themselves in a season when it is difficult or may be impossible to pray will you sustain them with your praying if they find themselves in a season when it is difficult or impossible to worship will you be there constant in worship if they find themselves in a season when it is difficult or impossible to open God's word will you open it and live life within it on their behalf will you be the body of Christ with them if so please answer we will We Will We Will you're okay we are going to start with we're calling her Ella um we're gonna start with Ella and uh Ella I we've talked with Ella a couple times over the last couple of months and uh she's written her answers out and debated whether or not she was going to share but she's in to share with us this morning so I'm going to hold this you can ready I'm not taking for don't worry all right so Ella tell us when did you ask Jesus into your life when did you make that decision to say I want to follow Jesus um I asked him into my life last year when it felt like I had nothing left to get and who is um Jesus to you today he's the person I go to when I don't know what to do in life and what has God up to in your life right now I think he's putting down the he's putting me down the path that I'm supposed to be going down and so the long dire praise God Ellen and I talked about why she chose to be baptized today and uh we've been talking about this um just this decision to make this outward step of of her faith and to share with you all to be a part of you are her church family and uh to do this together today to say this is this next step in my in my faith journey and I want to do this um surrounded by this group of people and what I love about this is this is the family right our youth group man I'm telling you come be a part of what happens here on Sunday nights um the presence of the Lord is just bursting from the hearts of our teenagers and are they perfect no are they growing absolutely and that's why that's why we do this we get to come alongside of them as they grow and as they learn so Ella's being baptized today to say this is my next step of faith and I'm choosing to save the world I washed by Jesus so Ella will you step in we're going to direct you on what to do here Elizabeth Joyce Morgan we baptize you in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit you you are no longer your own you have been washed by dad I challenge her receive the Holy Spirit and live this new life in Jesus Christ let's give her another hand oh my gosh sorry all right Payton come on over here so Payton I asked her if she wanted to share if she wanted she wanted to write it and have me read it so I'm going to read Payton for you today says hi my name is Payton Wilson I asked Jesus into my life sometime in elementary school earlier this year I went to church camp the worship team was seeing firm foundation and there was this one line Christ is my firm foundation that line made me think about how crazy and stressful life has been and had been and how scared I was to be alone but the lyric and the verse Philippians 4:6 do not be anxious about anything but in every situation by prayer and petition with Thanksgiving present your request to God God made me realize that I need a rock and a firm foundation and I getting baptized today because he is my rock [Applause] and so it's really warm Rene Wilson we baptize you in the name of the father Son and the Holy Spirit you are no longer your own you've been washed by God I challenge you live and welcome the holy spirit in your life and live this new life for Jesus [Applause] Christ's give round I'm going to give your certificates to your M I want to say this about this we had a couple more that talked to us this week about baptism and I know that there's some more in here thinking about this we're not empty in this water because there's some more that are getting baptized next weekend and we're going to keep this water full as long as people say they want to be baptized okay so if that's you this week and you say I've been thinking about this and I'm just not sure I would encourage you please come and talk to Pastor Jeremy and I after service we want you if this is what you feel like the Lord is leading you to we want to welcome you into the Waters of baptism let's worship and let's hear from Pastor Jeremy amen amen um we've had a full morning already yeah and uh I'm just I am thankful to be one of the pastors here in my life um if you were visiting today and you are anywhere in Middle Tennessee we just invite you back um to be a part of what God kids if you haven't left and want to go to kids church head on back I see Miss Jen waving at us I don't know who else is back there but uh you got a great morning in store for you back there as well um people often ask me about why in the world does Matthew's gospel begin with this long list of names it's a genealogy and it starts with Abraham and it goes all the way through Jesus uh and what's interesting there's there's actually so much interesting about that genealogy but let me just mention a few things one it's packed full of specific names of specific people who have been a part of God's story now understandably it's only a small sampling of God's people but it is is a line from Abraham all the way through Jesus that shows that God uses people Ordinary People right to unpack and to carry out his mission in the world the mission to redeem and to transform and what's interesting about that is it starts with Abraham if you know the story of Abraham that was not his first name his first name was Abram it didn't become Abraham until God God got a hold of him and changed his name right so you got this long list of people and some of the names you probably wouldn't even recognize but they're part of the lineage if you pay really close attention to uh to the story line you'll find that there are a lot of really good like pillars of the faith in that genealogy but if you look closely there's a few characters in there there who are just that they are characters they are people who um probably didn't meet the standard in some way shape or form for example there is a name listed in there of a woman uh who was a prostitute and somehow God's story is big enough that he can use all sorts of people no matter their story that's good news for you today because I don't know what your story looks like I don't know what it sounds like I know some of your stories but there's a lot of you here I don't know your story yet but God does that's right and I think knowing that God cares about names of people is really important for us uh I find that the older I get uh the more I find history to be important especially the history of my people um as I look back there was a a person in our family who years and years and years ago put together it's called the Selva genealogy now I was showing a few people this this morning and it the pages are brittle and it's obviously been done on a typewriter team do you know what a typewriter is uh it's it's old and it unpacks the story a little bit of a group of people who decided to come to what we now know as the United States of America they were a a nobody but that nobody has become a great people at least from my perspective uh this summer July 1st a little over a month ago we gathered in Cleveland Tennessee uh for uh Reagan my daughter's wedding uh it was a great weekend that we celebrated together but there's something interesting about Cleveland there is an exit that gets you on to the bypass around Cleveland there's a Jeep dealership there there's a McDonald's there's a big gas station um there's a couple of dealerships and they're doing some kind of construction back of moving all sorts of Earth but there's a little Cemetery that overlooks the exit and a couple years ago when I was doing some uh some genealogy kind of just checking things out I discovered that one of my relatives was buried in a little Cemetery in Cleveland Tennessee and over a hundred years ago my ancestor was buried in the very same town that this year my family gathered again to celebrate the wedding of a young lady who that guy had no idea about so on one uh afternoon when we were down there after the rehearsal uh I gathered my dad and uh my uncle and my sister and we made the 15minute drive over to see The Headstone of my relative now what's interesting about headstones you see them all around uh Middle Tennessee probably more so than any other place I've ever lived but you see these little popup um cemeteries out in the middle of absolutely nowhere or right in the middle of something that just doesn't fit and it took me a while to find his headstone because it's almost indistinguishable and I think there's something important for us to consider about what happens when our names become indistinguishable when people begin to forget our names so anytime we're in the area I go to see the cemetery in The Headstone that represents where one of my people lies in rest I often times wonder about their story I wonder about the name that that guy has and I I really I realized this names say something about you maybe not so much in our day and age CU really when babies are born we we try to find the coolest name name or the trendus name or the the name that will stand out and kids much later on was like what the why did you name me that but names mean something um when we moved when my family moved to Hong Kong I was two and a half years old and I was given a Chinese name it's not like you can translate Jeremy into Chinese but in the Chinese language uh a name means something and so there a lot of care was given uh to our family when we arrived and I was given a name and in the Cantonese dialect of Chinese it sounds like um everyone say that together okay very good let's go to let's go to chinae well that name doesn't mean Jeremy William elage it means the joy of the sea family that was the the family name we were given see and so I was given this name before anyone ever knew me but my parents had something to do with this I became known as the joy of the sea family now I have tried sometimes unknowingly to live into that name I I want to be the joy of the sea family I don't want to be the bane of their existence right and I don't think any of us do but there are times when I am reminded that someone named me the Joy Of The Sea family I wonder what does your name mean what does your name say about you what does it mean when people use your name in conversation now hopefully it's all good sometimes I recognize that some people misuse our names we we we often talk about how God's sometimes get misused for all the wrong reasons but I wonder for us today we might consider what the point of names really is so I want to read for you a passage of scripture it's just two verses it's in Isaiah 43: 1 and two um as you are pulling out your Bibles or your phone or your iPad or you brought your scroll with you today I whatever you do I I just want to give you a little context Isaiah uh is what we know as a a major prophet it's an Old Testament book that really is a conversation uh between God and God's people through this guy by the name of Isaiah uh prophets were the people who spoke on behalf of God and Isaiah came around somewhere between 700 and 750 years before Jesus and the letter of the communication outlines uh the sins of the people their Rebellion he also it also articulates the warnings against the people hey if you keep on this path this is going to happen now God's judgment to God's people and we have several of them outline for us in scripture God's judgment is always wrapped up in God God's love and care for his people hear me say that often times we uh will are challenge to focus on how angry God gets or how cantankerous God's get we'll be generous with that one um and sometimes we say well look how God how angry God was there how can that God that Angry God be a loving God as well and we live in a day and age where those two are like separated but I'll tell you what as a parent there are some things that really make me mad I mean they just tick me right off especially when it comes to my kids when I see people coming against them when I see um people trying to harm my kids Papa Bear comes out and I just want to let loose because I love them so much now sometimes there are sometimes I mean I'm sure not a whole lot of times where my kids maybe make some bad decisions in life and I get mad not at them but I get mad because of the way the situation has kind of really derailed them from the thing that God might want for them or what I want for them so keep that in mind as we read this passage in Isaiah 43: 1 and 2 but now oh Jacob listen to the Lord who created you oh Israel the one who formed you says do not be afraid for I have ransomed you I have called you by name and you are mine when you go through deep Waters I will be with you when you go through rivers of difficulty you will not drown when you walk through the fire of Oppression you will not be burned up the Flames will not come Samu you this is the word of God for the people of God and the world and we all say together thank you Jesus there's so much that I could unpack in these two verses and um I I wish we had time to do it justice but I do want to bring out just a few things one it's this God says I have called you by name you are mine I don't know if you're aware of this but throughout scripture God calls people by name here's a short list people like Moses Mary Abraham Peter Andrew Jacob Israel Judas zakus God has called is calling and will continue to call you by name not just to point you out but to invite you in to something that he has been up to for all of history and is not done when God calls your name he's inviting you to be a part of what he is up to right we've been paralleling our messages with the movie McFarland USA some of you have gone out and watched it you shared your experience with me you haven't seen McFarland USA starring Kevin cner you need to go watch it it's available on Disney plus I'm sure you can find it actually you can find at the library have a a CD teens do you know what that is DVD sorry um I don't even know what that is it's out there um but it's the story of a uh a football coach who makes a mistake and gets fired from his job he shows up in a small little town in McFarland USA and he becomes a teacher in a community that he does not know um he could argue doesn't even like uh but something happens to him and he is transformed and as he is transformed we find the whole Community transformed the the image the part of the story that I want to unpack for you is this uh they've lived there in the community they've endeared themselves to each other uh they all love each other and Coach white's daughter uh is turning uh the AG where in that Community the young ladies would have what we call ketta and um some people in the community realize that it's time for her kinetta and they're like coach why why aren't you doing a kinetta for your daughter he's like I have no idea what that is so the whole Community comes out and they throw her a k now for those of you anyone ever been to a Kima all right some of you know this it's a big deal like we encountered the kinetta when we were in in Texas and it's almost as big as some weddings I mean the dresses every I mean it's it's a big deal so they have the kinetta and they take his daughter out on a on a car parade if you will um and in the process of that there is this other group that comes out and challenges and what you might consider like a Turf and Coach white's daughter gets injured now coach white doesn't understand all that took place in that event but he is bound to determine that he's leaving McFarland because he wants a better life for his kids he wants a safer School a safer neighborhood better opportunities and so he actually goes for an interview with a school in pal Alto now when uh he gets back he and his wife having a conversation and he is making the case for why they should go and Coach white says this um he says it feels more like home let me go here he says it feels like everything we've ever wanted everything we've talked about a big house Financial Security a great school for the kids a nice neighborhood a nice safe neighborhood and his wife responds I I don't know coach white continues what do you mean you don't know the owner of the corner store was washing away blood from his parking lot when I drove out this morning and this is where his wife reminds him of something really really important here are her words the owner of the store has a name and he's our friend you looked him in the eye two days ago and you thanked him for everything he has done for us we have a tendency as humans we have a tendency of seeing all the problems in life right we get focused on those things and when we focus on all the problems with life we begin to forget the really important things and probably the most important of all is the people that we are surrounded by we can't forget people and not forgetting people Begins by knowing their name the store owner has a name and he is our friend last night um the boys chrisy and I we went out to dinner with uh r in-laws I don't know what that makes them I've heard that makes them Outlaws to us I don't know what but we went out to eat at a restaurant in town and when the waiter came to um to our table to take our order I did something that I do every time I go out to eat the first thing I do is I look for the me T and I call him by name and he paused for a moment cuz he wasn't used to people calling him by name sometimes probably more often than not people simply see him as a person there to serve them but when people like that come to my table I am determined to see them for who they are I call them by name I do the same thing with cashiers I I call them by name because names are important why do you think it's places like Walmart and Target and restaurants that you frequent and and other businesses why is it that name tags are important what is it about a name that a company thinks is important enough to put on someone's chest that sometimes they even print up really nice name name badges names are important for a reason right because when we know names we know something about the person they're not just a body right they're a person right and sometimes in our world today we uh treat people more like individuals what I mean by that is people who are disconnected from us they don't matter to us I am me they are there let's just keep it at that and we'll all be fine I don't want to know their story I am thankful that we are a god we serve a God who calls us by name because he cares I don't know if uh some of you if we were to start sharing the stories if you would be able to share the story of the time when God called you into God got a hold of you God changed you to the point where your name even had to change when we gathered with Reagan and cam this summer to uh to get him hitched Reagan name changed now I know there's conversation out there about that's so archaic and all this kind of stuff but you realize that name changing goes way way way on back to and it wasn't even about Society it was about a God who gets a hold of people in such a way that they now bear a part of his name maybe you know this probably do but when Abram became Abraham the everyone do that like the breath that make that sound together 1 two 3 that became a part of Abram's name Abra H his wife was Sarai she became name s you see there's something about sharing names now weird weird thing about um Reagan my daughter she be she went from rean Lee Salvage to rean Lee Smith which is the name of my mom's side of the so she changed her name but not so much but I wonder about you sometimes I think we hold on to our Nam so exced because we want it our way I wonder though what would happen if we responded to the god who's calling us by name and said God whatever you have right I'm in whatever you want to do in and through me I'm G you see when when God calls us by name it shows that God cares when we got the girls into the uh water that was way too cold for them I think it's good for you you know at least it wasn't an ice bath right um we called you by name your whole name because there's something about you when you go into the water it's you it's not some figment of you it's you right you are left at the bottom and the you that comes up is a new you amen that's true hopefully for all of us some of you today are thinking gosh God called my name I was baptized but man I haven't really been living that way and you're like why do you get Reb baptized we can have that conversation but can I just suggest this how about you just begin living into your baptism right what if you began depending on the God who baptized you right more than you depend on you yeah the one who got in the water and gave a testimony I wonder I wonder what would happen if we when called by our name by God would say yes not just so that we can be in relationship with God but if we having gotten in the waters of baptism we having said yes to The God Who call us by name what if God could then use us to call other people by name neighbors family friends waiters waitresses cashiers um The Friendly people who come to your door trying to sell you things why you Ching um what would it look like if we saw people the way God saw them now they don't have a name tag what do you do you can't call them any you can ask their name I get a little bit can tankers when people interrupt my dinner to come sell me something that I don't want and Christy is like Jeremy stop it said I'm just having fun what if I saw them not as said means for my entertainment what if I saw them as the people who out there just trying to make me I wonder how does God see you how does God see the people around you if God can call them by name what would it look like if we start calling people by name I know some of you are lamenting the fact that we have name tags on today um and in all of my pastoral Grace I want to say get over it I asked for your names to be on your tag today because your name matters to me and I hope that we as a church can be a church where names matter right the last time I think we did name tag Sunday was within like I know it was the first Sunday that we arrived here about 5 years ago I think we may have done one other time but I tell you sharing names is a big deal so thank you for putting up with my Antics I'm just trying to follow the lead of a God who knows our name so today as you get ready to leave I want to ask that you would uh you would find six people and you would call them by name today now we ran out of name tags what a problem if you don't see a name tag on someone would you be willing to ask their name no but Pastor I should know their name and if I asked them their name what are they going to think of me I'll tell you what they're going to think of you that they want to learn your name so that's your that's your homework before you walk out of the building I want you to go up to six people say hey I'm Jeremy you are Tristan nice to meet you Tristan and maybe just maybe we would share life to that would you stand with me for those of you who are new here which is a lot of you today um at the end of these service we give a benediction which if you translate to Latin it means it's good words so I'm going to use some good words and you'll see around you sometimes people will be like this as though they're ready to receive the good words so I'm just explaining what you might be seeing around you church as you leave our gathering today having been filled as I have been filled may you be filled today by the God who calls you by name may you be a blessing in the lives of others by recognizing and using their name might you do that until we meet again teams that's tonight by the way right here may you be the people who are blessed by God and bless others in return until we meet again [Music] you got go back [Applause] what's your name girl hey
