defensive first team three time defensive all NBA second team the 1991 Italian allstar game MVP Mr Michael Cooper Big Time Laker but also a big time fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers Michael thank you so much for joining us here on Dodgers Dugout live oh glad to be here yeah let's go baby let's go Dodgers okay before we get this show started can we get this can I see the Hat again though your Hall of Fame lid oh this my hall of fame hat the lid is fire you got a big lid and can you let me know what autographs are on that I mean that thing is all the inductees going in it's Vince Carter uh Chanty bips uh I I didn't get Simone Augustus she was out of out of town and uh Roy Williams couple of people that's already been in there so something I cherish a lot that is what is up I love the hat and I really thought it was awesome seeing you at the stadium this weekend you and a lot of the showtime Lakers and Dave Roberts was on the field I mean Dave Roberts looked like a kid all over again reliving the showtime era him being a big Laker fan growing up what was that like just that experience at Dodger Stadium over the weekend well you know it's always fun to go to Dodger games and to be out there on the field makes you feel alive you know what as a as a player in the NBA you can kind of feel the crowd a little bit so I always thought it was kind of weird being a baseball player that you couldn't really feel that crowd but you know what at Dodger Stadium the fans that pack that place you can feel that energy on the floor out there on the field and it kind of gives you another set of booster energy to kind of keep you going but it was great being out there uh coach Roberts loved him I made him give me a high five so he see if he had any hops in his legs yeah and you've played for some incredible coaches I mean the Pat Riley types of the world what do you think is special about Dave Roberts and why do you think he's the perfect manager for this club well you know what uh coach Roberts he allows the players to be themsel uh you know uh and that's one thing like Pat Riley when you got something great you don't Tinker around with it too much you just put it out there and let the players do them things and that's what coach Roberts does I mean he lets the players be themselves and you know what every now and then all you have to do is stay on the officials make the right changes when it comes to pitching and uh you know what the Dodgers doing a great job this this year absolutely and you were a part of that Showtime era Lakers team you won five championships but there's nothing like that first one that 1980 Championship that you were a part of and you look at this Dodgers team yes they won in 2020 but this is a new era with shotani and you have a lot of pieces they added how difficult is it just to get that first big championship in a new era and how do you think this team is dealing with that kind of pressure I think they handling is great you know they got mie Betts coming back from his injury and he's now back in the fold and been playing well the last couple of games but you know whenever there's a new era of baseball and following such great organizations like the Dodger franchise over all the years Laker franchise over the years you want to establish kind of like your own identity in that decade and we're in 2024 now so these players are looking to do that and the fun part about it is the fans are right there with them Dodger nation is right there all the way you gotta you had to admire that big old crowd yesterday for the shiny Otani bobblehead yeah there you go did you you didn't get a gold one did you no I didn't get any go thanks for pointing that out yeah the one that kind of L like the Larry O'Brien trophy right no not that one but I like how the dog bobbles too so that's pretty cool and he threw out the first pitch I think he should be high on on Dave Robert's Bullpen trust tree at this point but yeah it was it was quite the scene yesterday we got to get you one but you know again just the fact that they're trying to establish their own identity for this Dodger team and winning a championship World Championship would would put take that over the top absolutely and you've played with some of the biggest stars in the game I mean Kareem Magic Johnson I mean in his era no one gets it any bigger I mean the million-dollar smile the way he played that position with such Paz with the flare with what he's able to do in the city when you look at this era you mention Muki Betts but where the potential for sh he Otani to kind of get amongst those greats the Kobe Bryant the Magic Johnson's in this city do you think he has the potential to do that and what does he need to do to reach that tier of La Stars you know what he just has to keep continue to play Within the team team means together everyone achieves more and I believe that's why sh sha is playing the way he is because the team is allowing him to be great he's a great player in his own right but you got to remember Sandy Co the late great Don Dale you have so many great Dodger players Ron SE that has come through this organization and all he's doing is just putting his name amongst the stars and uh no better way is to do it as an individual but then help the team do it and win that Championship the World Series absolutely I want to ask you too Michael early in FanFest Muki told us that this season the Dodgers were going to be every team's World Series they had a bullseye on their back they kind of leaned into the villain role you guys were the same way when the Lakers came to town during the showtime era the place was sold out it was such a scene how real do you think that is as far as the opposing team elevating their level of play because of who they're going up against how real do you think that is cuz they're all professional athletes but how real do you think that is oh it's very real I mean you know you got the bullseye on your back the the teams that are below 500 or down there are going to play like Champions that night because of who you are and what you what you have uh established as this season so to do it and you're taking everybody's best shot that's the most glamorous part about this when you do win the championship is you know what we didn't get any nights off we had to come play come play at our level the level that we established and play our game and when you do that it's a gratifying feeling to win a championship but it's also gratifying to know that you can you know the game of Bas baseball and sports is about inspiration and you inspire your team but then you'd like to inspire others because you only want the other team's best you don't want them to say well we well you injuries are part of the game but oh well we missing this player or that player doesn't matter they're playing at their best level because of who you are and the Dodgers I know are gonna be this year's champ World Series champions there you go he says it Michael Cooper the Dodgers winning that Championship now as far as the course of the Season you have your es and flows you have your ups and downs take me back to your time as a Laker and how important it is to kind of Peak at the right time and how you kind of accomplish that and what this Dodger team needs to do to do that as well well you know when we were playing we tried to establish our game early you know back in exhibition season in training camp you want to get things going and everybody falling into shape and again injuries are part of the game and you know you knock on wood that you're not going to have too many or something that'll really take somebody out of the lineup for too long but for us it was just about establishing our play and we just Tred to play each month get better get better and better and you know uh I'm not a baseball player but they play 153 games 10 and something we only played 82 so that's a lot of games that you have to play but all you want to do is each game get better get better get better and in dog's case it would be like each every two weeks you want to get better so there's a point where you can Peak but if you're on top of your game the peak is winning the whole thing the championship so I see the Dodgers going about that that way they just continue to get better they're never out of a game they always come back I mean the game we were at uh uh bets is the two-run Homer to bring the when when unfortunately I had to leave a little early when I left they were down by one as soon as I get out to the parking lot you hear the crowd roaring and I look turn turn on my radio and they're up by one so that's what you want to do is just keep that competitive nature never say I'm out of this until the last pitch or the last the clock runs out and that's what the Dodgers are doing I don't think there's a a a a thing that you would call them peeking too early I think that they're going about it at their pace and pretty soon they'll be in the playoffs and that's when you want to be playing good baseball absolutely they have the talent they have everything you need to win a championship it's about the consistency and staying healthy and you're seeing them start to do that now I kind of want to go back to your time Growing Up in Southern California cuz you are I believe you went to passan high school right you were a bulldog yes sir I'm born I'm a I'm a Angelino a true one you're a true Angelino a passing I'm a southp pass tiger you're you're a bullog but when did your Dodgers fandom start were you a Dodgers fan growing up who are you your guys growing up as far as following the Dodgers as a kid through middle school high school I mean how big of a fan were you of this organization just growing up in la oh my uncles were Baseball fans yeah and they love the Dodgers I go back to myy Wills I go way back there players like that uh uh some of the greatest player Sandy kofax so I really I enjoyed the Dodgers it wasn't like I was just uh a Dodger fan because obviously I went with the big ball basketball so I was watching the Lakers more but I've known the Dodgers in success all through the years like I said I I very blessed to have a great relationship with the late great Don Dale his wife Annie Myers I'm really close with her so she's to tell me some of the old stories about him and the Dodgers and get to see them and then the luxury we had in 1980 when we won the Dodgers won the championship so we I think that was probably like the first time that had ever happened where a NBA franchise and a baseball franchise won a championship in the same season I might be wrong but don't hold me to that but it was great that year because that established a lot of what La was called La the city of Champions so for me going back watching all the old Dodgers and watching that that organization uh get better and better every year uh was always great and did you play any baseball as a kid I have an unfortunate story I would like to tell it's embarrassing a little family growing up we were like a seasonal sports team so whatever season was in that's what we were playing so when I was 12 years old I went out for Pop Warner in Pasadena at Victory Park and uh I made the team and I got what playing and I first time I got up to bat and usually I'm playing underhand but this guy throwing overhand so I'm up to bat I got the bat I got a nice stance I'm wiggling down in there getting ready guy throws a fast ball hits me in my lead leg which is my left leg hit me in the thigh I dropped the bat I started crying and I ran home and my uncle was like oh Mya oh no so that was the end of my baseball career right there but I was very good The Outfield now you couldn't get anything by me I played left field and if you hit something out there I was getting it but yeah that's my baseball story and I was always been a fan but uh participation I could deal with the softball the hard ball no that that was too tough for me that surprises me that you were in left field considering you were one of the best defenders in basketball you should have been in center field faster better athlete could cover more ground by the way did you watch last night's Dodger game because as someone who's a great defender you probably didn't love that defense there by the Dodgers in the second inning you know what I missed that one because I was doing something with my son I missed it but again I've been watching most of their games they get exciting more and exciting as as the games go on now for sure and it's always fun watching the Dodgers absolutely on the shaune Otani 50-50 watch we're close to that right so you already called World Series is he going 50/50 he's on Pace right now for 5151 he gonna get it done okay you hear that from Michael Cooper right there baby that's Michael Cooper hey now hey you know look I'm the biggest Dodgers fan ever but you know I love my purple and gold have to ask you what do you think about this offseason not a lot of movement not a lot of moves being made still a lot of Talent on this roster but what are your thoughts on on your purple and gold Mr Cooper I think the Lakers uh obviously didn't make a move I think uh the one thing that keeps them in the talk so to say is obviously bronny LeBron's son joining team and I actually like that move now will bronne be as good as his dad probably not he's not 69 he's what 61 62 but he's gonna be a very good pro basketball player I really do believe that I see the Lakers just can play good basketball I think the Lakers move will come at the uh trade deadline in February I think that's when they'll be able to make a trade because teams will be washing players out and they'll be uh trying to find different things different roles and stuff like that and I think the Lakers might be even before then if they come up with a good trade during that I think the Lakers will go deep in the playoffs this year I think they're gonna struggle early but they're still going to fight their way back into it and as you said you as long as you got LeBron a healthy LeBron a healthy ad a healthy Reed you'll be in competition but I was a little disappointed that they didn't do anything but again you got to leave it to the powers to be over there is that they're going to get it done the right way and uh we just have wait and see but I'm I I every season if the Lakers are healthy at the beginning of the season they can win a championship for sure the talent there by the way we got a comment from Noise by Noel Noel Sanchez says Michael Jordan didn't win a championship until Michael Cooper retired and to never forget that exactly so who who who sent Mr Noel Sanchez a our social media Guru here you better believe it you go Noel ABS you know you got some hot takes I mean I think absolutely bronny James lot of talent I mean I don't know if going to say he's going to win the Rookie of the Year something wild like that but I think you're right I mean that what he looked like after the rough start he does look like an NBA caliber player if he gets enough reps there in the G league and really puts in the time and work ethic and by all accounts he definitely has that how did you feel about the decision to hire JJ reick I wasn't a big fan of it but I think he was the right person obviously I think there was a couple people that were looking at before him and they couldn't get him so I think right now he he he might be the right fit will he be a Pat Riley that remains to be seen he has Pat Riley's looks nice young man wears nice clothes hairs clean and cut you don't have the oil in it but that come yeah but um uh I I you know now the more I think about it and we're in this situation I think he'll be good for the Lakers I think he'll be more receptive to listening because as a hard-nosed season veteran coach you're coming in one way thinking and a lot of coaches don't necessarily look listen to The Players I think JJ REI will listen to LeBron he'll listen to what the players have and I think they'll have to figure it out together so um too late to say anything else about it he's here we gotta work with him I think he'll he'll do a good job he has a great basketball mind you know playing in the league so many years and then being an analyst and watching that so you get a chance to look at basketball from all different sides and I think getting there again he's got some great support uh the two coaches he hired scottt Brooks and uh uh Nate McMillan are two coaches that are going to really help him a lot in the process of that but I think it's going to be his relationship with the players and I think he's gonna have to he's definitely gonna have to come at them from a defensive perspective certainly I mean the upside 100% is there and we'll see if he can take advantage of all the resources he has and hopefully the Lakers stick with him right and they give him a chance to even post LeBron run this team now I'm going to throw some uh some big stuff at you do you have a goat Michael Jordan LeBron Kobe magic I mean who is the goat of the National Basketball Association in your eyes Michael Cooper Michael Cooper not including Michael Cooper that's the obvious answer other than Michael Cooper no no no no you're asking me who Michael Cooper's goat is yes yes yes my goat kareim Abdul Jabar cap reason I say that there's three things about a goat one a goat makes other players around them better two a goat scores whenever he wants to kareim was one of the best passing big men in the game two he had an Unstoppable shot that nobody and Boston got a chance to look at it in Philadelphia they triple team as Kareem was still Sky hooking him and last but not least a goat makes his free throws and Kareem in crunch time games with a 85 88% free throw shooter so you couldn't file him to me he's my goat I know other people argue about that there's some other great players but you got to remember this the other goats that you're talking about most of them scor more than half of their points from the three-point line Pine did his damage inside and still scored over 30,000 points pre and just imagine if he played in this era where he didn't spend all that time at UCLA and he was one and done it went right to the league I mean a guy who was a six-time NBA champion a six-time Most Valuable Player also like you said the most indefensible shot only nine players in NBA history have block the Skyhook Michael did you ever block the Skyhook in practice though oh no nobody touched that man this about kareim and he didn't have load management Kareem came to practice and played every game unless he was seriously hurt and everybody knows about his migraines when he played those are the only things that held him back a little bit but even then there was four or five games throughout our career especially in the playoffs where he had a terrible migraine he wouldn't come to shoot around but he came to the game and still delivered I love that as a UCLA guy hey you Mak me so happy hearing that I mean let's not forget too five championships with the Lakers three with UCLA and we're talking about a guy that's given eight championships to Los Angeles in Kareem Abdul Jabar so I love that choice as your goat okay so you have the Dodgers winning the World Series who will they be going against is it going to be the Yankees could it be the Astros the Orioles who they play tonight once more I mean who you got them going up against in the fall classic it really doesn't matter because it's going to be more of an interest aspect as far as who they go against but I believe it's going to be the Yankees Umar judge the big hitter Justice yeah Aaron judge yeah Aaron judge yeah Aaron judge yeah he's right right there with sha you know the way they're battling for home run Supremacy but uh the Yankees are playing good basketb baseball this year you got to look at them I don't follow a lot of the teams my team was the Dodgers and then I went back to the O uh uh the A's when regie Jackson was there Mr October but uh yeah I'm G pick the Yankees I take them yeah commissioner Rob Manfred would love your pick baseball needs a Dodgers Yankees World Series especially after last year was the lowest rated lowest viewed World Series in baseball history who's winning World Series MVP though is it Muki is it shohi could it be someone like a Max mun teoscar Hernandez decoy maybe he could win too I don't know but who do you have winning the World Series MVP for the Dodgers Michael you know everybody would say sha shaie shaie I'm gonna say mookie I think Mook does a little I mean you know he's a good player m is a good player but you know what it don't matter as long as you win the big thing it's all about the parade right it's all about the parade on the cak absolutely would you love to see a Dodgers Boston Red Sox that would be great kind of like following in the NBA but no it's GNA be the Yankees I like I know I didn't like it in 2018 tell that much they lost in five games but yeah I muku is on the other side he's on the right side now so is is Joe Kelly okay last question so Michael Cooper when players go up to bat they all have their walkup song gets them hype their walkup song what would Michael Cooper's walkup song be before he goes up to bat it'd be uh Snoop Dog Drop it like it's hot Drop it like it's I like it I like it as long as long as that's not your defensive hype song you don't want to drop it like it's hot but absolutely I like that that that would be fire that would get the crowd going that's that's the big you see you hit on it you got to get the crowd going kind of what Freddy does and that's the biggest cure there so you nailed it right there but Michael Cooper we cannot thank you enough join here at Dodgers Nation it was a treat to see the showtime Lakers at Dodgers Stadium over the weekend you guys are a part of La history forever La Legends the showtime Lakers it doesn't get any bigger than that we could see the showtime Dodgers led by sh Otani go on a run like that and we know you love your Dodgers you love your Lakers and we thank you so much join us here at Dodgers Nation thanks again my man thank you thank you Dodger Nation let's go Dodgers represent man go Dodgers let's go yes Michael Cooper there he goes thank you for joining us Mr Michael Cooper hey Michael Cooper man this is 12 o'cl and he's represented like that acting like that what a great guy man Koopa Loop man and you just talking to Dave Roberts I mean Dave Roberts literally was like a kid at a candy store over the weekend just just so excited to see those guys and Michael kooper he loves his Dodgers man and look this is an LA lifer grew up in Pasadena went to PCC Pasadena City College or as they call it University of Colorado Boulevard and he goes to New Mexico and he goes on to be one of the best defensive players of his generation but uh yeah guys let me know Down Below in the comments section what are you guys thoughts on Walker Beeler start yesterday so we're GNA get into that we got some Yamamoto we're talking Roki Sasaki did you get a decoy bobblehead I'll tell you everything about that Michael Cooper but he hit us up on Instagram he was so excited about being at Dodger Stadium wanted to be on the show as a fan of the show fan of your boys in blue so had to get them on you're not going to say no to a Lakers Champion that's for sure and I also think that he offered some good insight as far as what it takes and the mindset it requires to win a championship and how important it is to peek at the right time also I love this Kareem goat chat is is that love that I mean that was great we got Chris forsker a Showtime Lakers still the best Lakers team of all time easily no doubt about it I think 2001 Lakers like would like to have a word but the depth of that team was better I mean hey can do Lakers show every day if you want we got exus Coupe definition of lockdown defense against Boston Carlos Perez if we had a Pat Riley type of manager the Dodgers would have multiple World Series rings Martin troop Dusty Baker would be the Dodgers Pat rley if Jose Airi Dodgers Dave Roberts will go down as the greatest Dodgers manager of all time that is an extremely scorching and sure to be unpopular take down below that's for sure uh we got uh W Bazil the gold one looks like C3 Pani there's the com of the show so far the c3p oani so we'll start right there we'll start right there yesterday was absolutely insane I got to Dodger Stadium around 2:00 there was the longest line that I have ever seen for a giveaway it was wrapped around the block talking to some of the people there they had been there since 700 a.m. the people in the front and it was absolute I mean it was organized it was cool I talked to some of the Dodgers security and they said they were going to open the stadium about an hour and a half early just to let people in because players were having issues getting to the stadium on time as well because of all the traffic and look this is just a testament to the star power of sh Otani sh Otani is the biggest star in Los Angeles at the moment cuz he's in his Peak Prime yes LeBron James is in the conversation for greatest of all time but he's 39 years old this is sh otani's town now because he is in his prime he signed $700 million contract and hey if LeBron had a bobblehead with his dog would you get a line like that no you're not right I mean shohi is the biggest star not just in Los Angeles he's the biggest star in baseball he's the face of the league yes Aaron judge can make his case but shy Otani is set to make 7 to100 million this year in endorsements that's more than Aaron judge Bryce Harper Mike Trout Clayton Kershaw Paul SK Ronald aunu Jr combined then some it's not even close right no one moves the needle like sh Otani he doesn't just move the needle he is the needle right he is the biggest star in this Sport and what do stars do they perform on the biggest stages when the lights are bright when the pressure is on them when they're expected to be great they're great what dides you do yesterday well first and foremost like we said on the show yesterday by the way we said that Decoy should throw out the first pitch I was only joking I did not have any inside knowledge on that but sure enough before the game show he brings out decoy gives him the ball and look at this the first ever dog to throw out a first pitch look at the high five there and Shi had said that he trained him for a couple weeks to do just that and it was just really incredible to see that I mean first time and honestly I don't need to look it up I'm guessing too that it was also the first time in beg League history first time in Major League Baseball history that a dog threw out a first pitch to his owner and his owner hit a home run I'm guessing that's true too but the real piece of history that we've never seen that we are going to see with SH Otani is potentially 50/50 potentially 4545 and yesterday he hits a home run and he steals another base he's now on Pace for 51 home runs and 51 stolen bases no player in the history of this sport has accomplished that feat the highest player to hit home runs and stolen bases in the season was Alex Rodriguez in 1998 when he hit 42 home runs and 46 stolen bases sh Otani could have that by this weekend we are witnessing greatness in real time you are going to be telling your grandkids that you saw sh Otani play and your grandkids are going to tell their grandkids that their grandparents saw sh Otani play that is how big time he is and as far as the bobblehead selfa goes the gold one was pretty cool by the way if you don't know the the there was a box that indicated with the Paw on it that it was a gold one so the gold one was pretty cool I like this one better I know it's not as valuable I like this one better cuz you get the Dodger blue I just heard the C3PO thing you can't unsee that kind of looks like an Oscar by way an Oscar is 13 and 12 Ines but it for me I like I like the OG one I like it I like it I mean I think I think for me you got uh you got sh you got decoy you got his pawar here right in his hands and by the way I mean look at how this year has changed for sh Otani the year started and we were fearing one of the worst potential scandals where his translator was betting on sports and he gets fired to now his dog is throwing at the first pitch he's going out to make history so I told you then I'll tell you again that he was going to repair any issues he might have had with his image and he did it very very quickly and I still think that he was innocent in that but let me know Down Below in the comments section what are your thoughts on decoy on Shi on the fact that he comes through in a big spot and hits a home run right off the bat I mean how did he get 4040 Grand Slam walk-off dude is different dude is built different he trains different this is an injured pitcher this is a guy that I saw throw a bullpen session before the game and what does he do bottom of the first inning also good at Pat too I mean onew count fouled off the fourth pitch and he gets a slider on the outer third he just lifts it just hooks it out the strength Boom the strength that he possesses to that by the way I love how the girl catches it the little kid catches that ball what an amazing night I mean Dodger Stadium is a party every single night if you haven't been out to a game it feels different it's an event every single game feels like an event it feels like a postseason game because of watching this team and all their star power we got Chris for dmac what would be your walk up song mine would be to live in D La that's awesome I like that I think if I would go for Tupac I would go Ambitions as AA I won't not you know i' probably do that and have a Doug Life tattoo instead of Thug Life on my abs but also I I was always thinking too my walk up song I would do the Doug theme song the guys uh too young for Doug let me know down below what would your walkup song you how about this Tony taters I let me guess let me I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here you'll probably be right is it a Van Halen song right now now hey Passa too it would probably be uh the 5150 solo and the song 5150 but honestly I would probably have the 5150 Show on P that's right but I would probably get the the 1999 Tim Burton Batman theme song for my walk up song that'd be pretty sick man how about that how about that sound track with Prince oh that's right that was incredible how about Serena what would your walkup song be you're putting me under pressure you can throw out some probably like work by Rihanna in work which she didn't she didn't give Drake credit for that song he got no writing credits for it yeah no Riri hey you can't go WR with that like that work and honestly like part of the battle is like you got to just pick a song that you know the crowd is going to Vibe with that's one of those songs where it's like like try not to Dan Dance challenge you know what I mean you would have to break on that one so I like that's a that's a good choice but let me know Down Below in the comments section what would your walk up songs be let me know down below we got uh Pat Peterson decoy could start a trend to get bat dogs into Major League Baseball ct3 walkup Song should be tipto through the tulips oh come on now come on now we that's that's a bruh come on it's all right though I like it I don't hide your your takes on this show guys Martin tro dmac your walkup song should be the douge no oh teach me how to Doug that'd be kind of cool I like that I like that that's one of those I've watch watch tutorials like for hours and still you know I can't I can't really you know I tried I tried to learn that and no one's taught me how to Dougie but uh Sabotage by BC boys that'd be awesome that's great I feel like a player has had that Metallica Fray and of Sanity that'd be a banger right there Roy Estrada dodger blue by brownside Prince work from Alonso jonus basses mine would be dumbb and Dumber most annoying sound in the world that'd be pretty cool um we got uh Mike Lopez $2 what are the chance of Otani closing part-time this season I would say zero I think there's a better chance that Decoy closes out the World Series than Sho Otani just because you have Bullpen Depp coming back Ryan brazers looked excellent Michael copc Michael copek is Dave Roberts doesn't want to say it but Michael copc I think ends up with the lion share of the the save opportunities because he gets backto back saves and I by the way I saw Michael copc before the game talking to his agent Scott Boris and they were talking and you know what all four of those guys had copek Boris the two Boris guys they had big time Smiles on their faces because Mike because Scott Boris knows that his client Michael copc is in a perfect situation saw Josh hater got a couple years ago Michael copc was in base Hell by the way someone someone please someone please check in on Miguel Vargas please give my man a hug might have to go flat to Chicago just checking on my guy migy VAR okay I mean I just I don't know if you guys saw that but then he goes to Baseball Heaven in with the Dodgers and now he can set himself up for a really really nice payday after next season so he's under one more year team control but so far Michael copc with the Dodgers 13 and a third Innings of work he's allowed just one run on three hits 19 strikeouts to three walks a 68 e three saves and it's not just the numbers it's the presence it's the dominance 102.6 miles per hour on the gun it's the hardest throw we've seen for the Dodgers since 2009 when Jonathan Broxton hit 103.5 which is kind of crazy when you think about that but yeah we got copc needs a new walkup song though I'd suggest fuel by mallica dmac no jinxing I'll do my best Kenny Chung Mickey Vargas should have trotted home should have acted like he belonged oh you're talking about I don't think that was it by the way I know play you're talking about the hustle there against the Astros in uh the Saturday game of that Series where Kik overruns the bag yeah just uh remember all these games uh Vargas on retirement watch ouch um so I got some bronny James takes yeah bronnie turned around my hot take early on bronny James was that bronnie James was going to higher before LeBron James based on how the first couple games looked but he turned it around for sure David Valenzuela you're cold for this one he said Aaron Justice about to be paid hey come on give my man a break okay come on come on why you got to be like that for sure but uh we got a lot of people talking about about decoy yeah the greatest moment in baseball history none's gonna top that I mean for sure I mean what he is De not he's not a man's best friend he's Superman's best friend and Otani can do it all he can even train dogs so that was great to see he was excited about that but next big up and I cannot wait to talk about this a big massive let's go Dodgers for Walker bleeping ber I saw all over the X after his last start people tweeting out this should have been Walker Beer's last start Walker beer is washed Walker beer is cooked send Walker beer to the sun it's over for Walker Beeler and what I say one wear the Alternatives two his ceiling is higher than landed KNX when all you guys are screaming dmac we need landed Knack in there yes landed Knack has been good in his role he's been more than serviceable in his role they've used his options correctly but this is Walker buer that has not lost the velocity that's coming off his second Tommy John surgery and last night he not only earned another start but last night he showed the potential to if things don't go right for some of the pitchers that the Dodgers are hoping to get back Tyler glass now is still trying to work his way back he's dealing with the elbow tendinitis Dave told us it's a slow process for Tyler glass now yoshinobu Yamamoto who made his first Rehab start we'll talk about that in a second we'll see how things go for clayon Kershaw and Gavin Stone and Jack flare but this is a good problem that that's happening for the Dodgers and the good problem is Bobby Miller looks better Nine strikeouts 18 swings and misses against the Rays last Friday Walker bu said last night after the game he told us that that was the most like himself that he's felt since 2021 and why is that relevant well because in 2021 by the way one of the biggest misconceptions is that he wasn't effective after the sticky stuff Crackdown it's not the case because he was the betting favorite to win the national league sa young in August in August he was still the betting favorite the issue with Walker beer in 2021 was that he was just one of four pitchers to throw over 200 Innings he threw 207 and 2/3 Innings at a 247 ER LED baseball with 33 starts now the reason why him saying that this is the most he's felt like himself since 2021 is because he pitched in 2022 and if you remember in 2022 he had a complete game against the Arizona Diamondbacks early on the season he did make 12 starts that year had a 402 e but in 2021 he had a 171 ra plus he was 71% above League average that was the league lead he finished fourth in the Sai Young award voting so yesterday if the Dodgers don't forget how to play defense in the second inning he goes five innings there's a chance he could have given you a quality start and it's fastball curveball cutter yesterday he threw the the curveball the majority of the time what did I say was the biggest key to his success yesterday if you watched the show last week throw the curveball more lean into the curveball don't know if berer watches the show but I'm just kidding they have guys that know what they're doing as far as attack plans and he did that you look at the way he came out there in the first inning a one two three first inning also gets two strikeouts he struck out Rutman with a cutter up in the zone then he struck out Henderson he got him swing with a nasty cutter that he got him to Chase and then the top of the second inning is where it must have been very frustrating first out he gets Sant tendere to fly to right and then oarn was safe at first after a throwing error by Max munzy and he had already gotten two strikes on him it should have been two outs it should have been two outs on seven pitches it looked like it was going to be another quick an efficient one two3 inning and then the very next batter Cedric Mullins he has him down the count 1 and two fouls off a couple pitches throws a ball on the sixth pitch Ms with a curveball down the Zone he fouls off the seventh pitch a forseen fast ball on the inner half then on the eighth pitch of the at bat he throws a nasty knuckle curve that bounces and then Will Smith just does not throw the ball to first base it was a mental Mistake by Will Smith Cedric Mullins heads up goes down the line gets to first and that's the inning that should have been one two three for Walker beer on on 14 pitches instead with Runners on first and second Ur is doubled to right that scored Mullins and oars that gave the Oriol a 2-1 lead then holiday he flyed to Center he gets the out there and then next batter he had mccan down 02 misses with a sweeper badly probably his worst uncompetitive pitch of the night one of the few and he singled to right that scored Urus to put the Orioles Up 3 to one then he gives up a double to cowser that one to change up kind of left up in the zone then he got Rutman to pop out so they get three runs on three hits in one error and then you look at later in the start top of the third inning he gives up a one out single to santand there but then gets two fly outs to end that one they get no runs on one hit Top of the fourth inning he does hit Urus with the pitch with a sinker he hit him on a up and in Sinker and then he gets holiday to ground to a fielder's choice they get orus out at second then he strikes out mccan with a cutter really nice cutter right there on the the outer half around the corner then he gets cower to fly out to Center then at the top of the fifth inning he goes back out there gets two pop outs and he walks Sant tendere and then oarn he doubles on a force on a knuckle curve that he kind of left up then Anthony Bond who by the way Anthony Bond I had him third on my Bullpen trust tree looks really really good he he got in there and he did the job once again so if you look at bu's line overall and you're waking up this morning you didn't watch the game you're saying wait a minute two earned runs four runs total five hits in four and two3 innings 90 pitches wasn't efficient four strikeouts on a walk you're like uh maybe a little progress maybe a little bit of a step in the right direction but if you watched that game if you saw how the stuff played if you saw how fluid and effortless the mechanics were he wasn't fighting on the mound to be consistent with his mechanics when Walker bu is trusting his mechanics and it's just about executing pitches he can go out there and have success so hey if you want you can ride off Walker beer it's not riding back and one thing that really stood out to me was the shirt he wore after the game if you guys saw the shirt he had on after the game it was that Jason shirt that said to hell in back so Walker Beer's the dog man and he knows what he's fighting for and he knows he still has in him I said out the show yesterday Anakin Skywalker is still in there for Walker berer so here's what here was ber after the game um yeah I mean in general I think pretty encouraging obviously my last start I I kind of talked about feeling more like myself and and tonight I think it was that but but more and obviously kind of some weird plays in that game and and that you know it happens like it is what it is and uh you know make a better pitch balls on and play all that kind of but um no I felt a lot better I'm I'm as encouraged as I've been since you know 2021 probably if you if you look back in my career that's kind of been what I do I've I've obviously had times where I I feel really good about the slider and and you know at times like throwing decent change UPS here and there but really I throw four seams Cutters and change ups and um you know kind of getting rid of the big slider and and trying to make the cutter a little bigger to right I think is a big thing for me obviously they they had seven lefties in there today so um didn't have to do a ton of that but um yeah all in all I think kind of the the basics of pitching when my delivery is is Right seem a lot easier throwing strikes throwing first pitch strikes throwing curveball for strike throwing curveball under I think all of it seems a little um easier I guess when when my body's in the right place now you know I think we keep talking about performing and and obviously the the line isn't as good as as I would like to be but you know I felt I feel very encouraged by by tonight I mean I think it the the longer I've been here the more we look at these kind of like underlying numbers stuff and and all of that and I think tonight was probably one of my better starts in a long time from swinging Miss strike percentage things like that and so you kind of have to trust that and and believe that you know it's all going to even out or whatever but uh you know it's one of the better offenses in in baseball right now and I felt like at least I had like a fighting chance to get every body out it wasn't kind of like I hope they get themselves out I felt like I could get guys out and um you know there's bits and pieces that didn't go perfectly like that but for the most part I I felt pretty competitive yeah and I think that when you listen to Walker beer speak he's very honest and open about where he's at and the last start he felt like he unlocked something and he had a breakthrough with his delivery and getting forward to the plate and you saw the progress in the very next start so I think that's one thing that you have to give him a lot of credit for is how open he is and a lot of people are upset with Will Smith for sure yeah I mean Will Smith just look he's been great behind the play throwing out Runners block balls he hasn't been so great last night he hit one hard gave one a ride but he ends up going on the night 0 for three he's been a 200ish hitter for the last three plus months of the season so the offense has been very very down for Will Smith we'll do a deep dive into that one but real quick before we get out of here little bit on Roki Sasaki so it was was reported by Bob Nale last week that maybe Roki Sasaki was not going to be available but Jeff passen has some new nuggets about Roki Sasaki now before we get into this if you don't know Roki Sasaki Japanese player in the npb one of the best young pitchers on the planet I've said he's going to be the Dodgers Paul skin potentially and sure the year he's had hasn't been the best year there's no doubt about that but still a 245 erra 91 strikeouts 21 walks and 77 Innings and the stuff is there I mean he still has a nasty splitter a ridiculous fast ball where he can hit Triple digits so the potential is still there but here's some nuggets from Jeff pass and he says sasaki's relationship with the Marines was damaged accordingly and he wants to leave again the Marines plan to decide whether to put Sasaki in the posting system after this season were they to do so before 2026 they would receive a posting fee of less than $2 million by contrast the orex Buffalo received a 50.6 million fee from the Dodgers on the deal for Yamamoto who was 25 so like we said on the last show that that's really the big kicker there is just not getting the same when it comes to a posting fee now you'll go on to say Sasaki wanted to enter the posting system which allows for the transfer of Japanese players to Major League Baseball last off season he would have forfeited hundreds of millions of dollars in a potential future contract any player under 25 years old who gets posted is subjected to inter International signing restrictions which would limit sasaki's potential signing bonus to less than $10 million as happened when Otani was posted by the hokido Nom ham Fighters at 23 sasaki's team the chibal lote Marines said no so if you rewind a little bit we learned of this the day that shohi announced on his IG when Googled Dodgers logo picked the first one and then posted it to let the world know Otani he reported where he was going to sign and shortly after that we learned about RI Sasaki and if you don't know about the posting system in the npb well you need N9 years of service time in Japan before you can qualify for international free agency anything before that you have to be granted and you have to be embraced by your team and they have to post you and if you're not doing it as a free agent where you're getting big time money and you're signing for $325 million on a 12year pack like Yoshi noi Yamamoto well you're not going to be making a lot and talking to Japanese reporters what they've told me is that one the fans there are upset with Roki Sasaki I had one Japanese reporter tell me that 80% of the fan base is upset with him and they think that he has not done enough for the Marines and that's kind of how it works the franchise has to feel like you've done enough for them whether it be going out there and winning big games or winning a championship or doing enough but I think what this boils down to is Shi had an agreement with the neon ham Fighters and they knew what his Ambitions were and that it wasn't about the money that's the same case for RI Sasaki he doesn't care about the fact that if he stayed longer than the mpb and he came here more traditionally he could sign that massive contract right away and not have to worry about going on a my league contract getting less than 10 million on a signing bonus and then if something happens to you well you're not going to be signing that big bag I think you have to respect that if you're an mpb Club knowing that he is a Phenom type of pitcher so I think what this really says to me is that as long as Roki Sasaki is doing everything that he can to get posted and that he wanted to be posted as early as last season lets me know that look forget about his numbers and how he's looked this season and you can say what you want about what this says about his character whatever he's not happy there so I think his numbers are reflecting that in his performances too it's why there's been a little bit of a drop off as far as his performance because he wants out he wants to compete against the game's best players that is in the show that's where he belongs and you have to respect the fact that he's willing to take that risk and potentially risk future earnings to say you know what let's get this process started I want to see what I have now and then when arbitration comes I'll start making more money when free agency comes I'll start making money as long as I pitch the way I'm capable of and the fact that he still wants to leave that lets me know that the Dodgers are still a top team they could potentially sign him and the Padre's are as well and West Coast teams as well but this is a major Game Changer because if you look at this off season glass now's under contract Yamoto is under contract kersch has the option the player option to come back I think that he wants to come back and get that 3,000th strikeout and become the 20th pitcher in big league history to reach 3K when it comes to punch outs and he would become just the fourth left-handed pitcher of all time to accomplish that feed too only four only three lefties Steve Carlton Randy Johnson CC Sabathia kers would be the fourth so Jack flarity is going to be a free agent this feels like a rental I like the fit feels like a rental Bobby Miller looks better Walker beer is a free agent if he pitches strong maybe he gets a a bet on yourself deal with another team maybe he comes back I don't think the Dodgers will offer him a qualifying offer but Max Freed's a free agent but if you could get Roki Sasaki and you add him to this current mix Gavin Stone looks fantastic this season you don't have to go out there and spend big money on a free agent look at this rotation next season Tyler glass now as your Ace Yoshi noi Yamamoto as your number two then Gavin Stone as your three Roki Sasaki as your three four and then Bobby Miller as your five and you got Landon Knack as depth Dustin may Tony gonlin still trying to work their way back this would be massive then you could pour that money into the shortstop position or try to extend to Oscar Hernandez if you want to allocate those funds that way we got a 499 Super Chat from dmac Jr what are the chances my dad loves me more than Miggy Vargas I love you both the same man I love all all my kids the same okay and Miguel Vargas oh my gosh Tony taters put it up there oh my goodness wow wow let me see that again Miguel Vargas well we will always be there for you man if Miguel Vargas has 1 million fans then I'm one of them Miguel Vargas has five fans and I'm one of them if Miguel Vargas has one fan that is me if Miguel Vargas has no fans that means I'm no longer on this Earth mcky VAR will get through this but couple more guys and oh we already mentioned that Otani right at the top so I mean look at this rotation next season sh OT by the way his Bullpen just watching yesterday it's so effortless to watch him on the mound and he's doing it with joy with a big smile on his face but I think that's a given right there right I think the question marks are glass now's health yamamoto's health we know that shi is going to be back Shi is going to be getting the ball when the Dodgers open their season against the Chicago Cubs in Japan so sh Otani Tyler glass now Yamamoto Gavin Stone Bobby Miller rogi Sasaki Tony gonlin Landon knack Dustin may clay Kershaw comes back on the player option you already had 10 possible arms right so it's uh it's definitely LS Jones says Gavin Stones our best pitcher for sure absolutely
