here we go with the kickoff Carmen will probably try to swim it and he does Paul comes loose and the Bears have to get out of bounds Junior defensive back Steve Gunn ran onto the field just in time for the kicks which Kevin Moen would field when I get the ball I took like three steps and saw a bunch of Stanford guys running at me and magically I turned and there's Richard Rodgers Rogers along the sideline another one all of a sudden the ball is in the air and it's coming toward me is like time was standing still it took forever to get there I get the ball and there's guys running at me so I turn around and Pitch it to Dwight I've been in touchdowns I was an arrogant freshman when I got the ball as he's going down uh yellow tone pitcher [Applause] they literally had me all tied up they had my arms and I just kind of flicked it out finally when it was at the point where it looked like the guy is just tackled and his knees going down you know and kind of go into the pile he pissed it before his knee hit the ground when the ball came out I'm like what the hell's going on game over over here right and then it just kept playing out I earned the official below the whistle that's why I started walking on the field as I get the ball back the second time I can actually see Stanford players running onto the field while the Bears now had 11 players on the field Stanford had well who knows how many the play was still going on and for a brief moment I was like should should I stay out here and Tackle this guy I was one of the ones to run out onto the field and as we were running out they actually started coming back toward us I'm there uh just no place to go I couldn't get up I think that's that's why I'm doing this interview [Laughter] [Applause] I run right at the white jersey that I think is supposed to be on the field then I lateral the ball to Murat I'm standing next to coach cap and we're watching the ball and we're streaming down the line and he's grabbing me and I'm holding on to him my rack takes the ball a few yards throws it over his head backwards I started shaking my head going well it's you know four lateral I'm in a perfect position for Moretz over the shoulder and here came the ball floating down and uh you know look up and there's a band [Applause] we're running like crazy trying to get to Midfield and we were clearly pretty early one of the first on the field we just took off and I remember I wanted to be at the front of the pack and I was wearing this cone head I'll know the play is not over and so I turned around to get off the field myself and I almost got trampled by our own band I have before I get hurt [Music] the next thing that I see is Kevin Mohan running the other way this can't be good [Applause] I was jumping up for with celebration I'm just like ducking empowering to get out of the way as I got to the Apex of my LEAP see this cow player I there was Gary and Boop did I shielded the horn when I went down and it was a super bad time to be me [Music] forty years later play lives on [Music] 23 undying seconds [Music] ultimately why it endures why it still matters and be summed up in one word and no the word is not trombone it was the greatest lesson of never giving up you know all you need is Hope
