[Music] good morning and welcome to Marshall internal medicine I'm Eva tacket I'm blessed enough to be the program director here at Marshall through this series of videos we want to welcome you to Marshall you'll meet several of our faculty both General Internal Medicine as well as subp Specialists and you'll meet several of our wonderful residents we we hope at the end of this exploration that you'll conclude the same that we have that we are indeed #the best program ever I really consider uh Marshall University uh Residency program is as strong as anywhere else really the basic the teaching the the cases the diversity of cases covered it's a tree state so you will see a lot of pathology make you stronger uh things that make the Internal Medicine Residency Stand Out are excellent pathologies and a wide variety of cases that can be seen here in the area while also having excellent faculty and staff support to really further a quality education the um The Residency program here provides uh access to a unique high-risk patient population that I believe is crucial for Resident development and whether that be in the outpatient department or in the inpatient services or in our ICU I believe that we provide a strong and very adaptive uh clinical experience for our residents so when I was picking a program um I wanted a lot of procedural experience and also a diverse patient population um and I got all that from one program um in this program you know procedurally and ICU wise we're very strong I've done more than 100 Central lines uh which is unparalleled throughout the country you don't get this type of exposure we get to do a lot of procedures as well here in Marshall whether we were impatient or especially in the ICU as well uh we get a lot of ambul uh exposure as well in the clinics we have our own Primary Care Clinic and we do walking clinics as well helping a lot of people that our in need the key factor that defines our Residency program is its leadership they do really care about making this program the best possible it can be they encourage free thinking and uh adopt change and actually Foster uh supportive environment to the residents I think what's unique about this training program is a collegial between uh faculty members and between faculty members and house officers um we are friends first and then mentors and colleague second and as faculty members our doors are always open uh for any either personal or educational questions that uh house officers residents or fellows may have so you get to know not only medical things you get to know different cultures also we teach each other other languages and uh we sh share food together like somebody will get us like tradition food from their like Hometown the other one will get us like gums I do I I bring them gums always well prepared and get ready to work but um this place makes really really good doctors um the autonomy you have here I believe is one of the best um you're able to make plans by yourself and bring them up to most attendings and they'll kind of go over it with you and kind of let you have full autonomy um and to kind of treat patients here the attendance are very friendly uh you never feel the gap between u a student a resident a fellow or attending so that's a very positive Point as well um being able to communicate and uh knock on the door of the attending anytime you want for any questions I think that's a very good uh positive support for the residents I love the friendly atmosphere of our program faculty are easily approachable and care for your success along with the program success educational and research opportunities are easily obtainable what makes us ESP special is that we um are more of a family rather than just co-workers or people who have to work together we care about each other and we support each other to learn and shine and get the best out of each one of us I love this program with all of my heart and I'm a graduate of this program and I've been around for about 15 years now so talking about the strengths are pretty easy and I think it's a parent if you ever make a live tour of our facility and hopefully through Zoom tours you can see right off that it's our Dynamics it's our relationships it's our family like atmosphere there's no hierarchy here at Marshall it's not like you know the students talk to the interns the interns talk to the seniors the seniors talk to the fellows everybody talks to anybody who they need to Huntington provides a balance between being in a small City or small town that has uh almost everything that you need and uh in addition to the fact that being a Col and Serene City uh with low complexity there is no traffic and parking is available everywhere and anyone who lived in a big city knows how big that how hard that can be I think Huntington is a great town because uh one it has a lot of uh things to do here locally including outdoor activities and good local dining and shopping uh but it also has a very short drive to larger cities such as Columbus or Lexington so in Huntington you actually have access access to the state's best weekend getaways whether it's like white water rafting or skiing or if you want to just go for mountain biking so if whether you're adventurous person and you know planning on um doing something very adventurous like uh rafting through grade five Rapids or um you just want to have a calm stay in an Airbnb and just look at the scenery so you have the best of both worlds actually and you get whatever you want it's a small town but has everything here there's a lot of dinery options a lot of restaurants uh we do a lot of kind of sports here you can do whatever kind of sports you like there's a lot of outside activities as well TR to do kaying skiing if you're the type of person who would just enjoy the parks and the scenery there's a lot here at West Virginia you know if you have a family uh and you're looking for a good place to raise a family uh this is this is a really good area to do it in as well I feel like um the schools in the area are good schools for your kids to learn from you know it's just a great area to be be in and be from uh we have a family kind of feel here um you know once you're in the family you're always in the family so you know we have residents that come here they do internal medicine they go off to other places and you know they're they still feel like they're part of the Marshall family um it's a it's kind of a lifelong kind of thing um and I think that's kind of what's unique and and really makes people uh come here and and and also keeps a lot of people around is that family f um you know me have multiple friends here they're kind of like family now um the attendings have been super nice and they they have a lot of wellness events they kind of bring them to their house um we always kind of meet up after after their work and again like you know go around numerous pars play basketball or soccer um someone will throw dinner at their house and invite all their residents so it's a very familyfriendly environment I decided to stay here as opposed to going elsewhere was only because I like the people here um I really wanted to kind of pick my patience and where I wanted to stay as opposed to uh pick the pick place you know so the patients here the people in general in the community they're just amazing very welcoming very kind very warm and uh ultimately the that kind of responsiveness uh really drew me to have really just consider this Home Marshall Medical School what I liked about it was it the class size was not too small but it was a good moderate size um and I had lots of opportunities to interact with uh faculty oneon-one and could get individualized instruction and so that's what I really appreciated about it it's not so large that you compete with others for doing procedures and so you get many opportunities to be exposed and to participate in uh clinical procedures so I think when you choose a program you have to look at where you feel comfortable where are you going to be able to grow because if you don't feel comfortable in that place it can be the best training that has ever been documented but you're not going to grow as a leader because you may feel intimidated or you may feel afraid to express who you really are and here at Marshall we want you to feel comfortable we want you to feel like it is a family-like atmosphere never be afraid to ask any questions to anyone so that you can continue to grow and I want to produce not only strong residents who become wonderful clinicians but I want to produce leaders and when you feel comfortable in an atmosphere is when you really develop that leadership so I often times tell students and residents go with your gut instinct go what makes makes you feel comfortable that's what led me to Marshall 15 years ago and I've never been sorry to be here I think uh the interal Medicine Residency program is definitely unique here because we have a long Heritage of graduating successful internist where they pursue their career in different uh fields in terms of Jaan medicine or sub Specialties they have been successful they have been our ambassadors for the whole world the the Community is very welcoming to various uh uh Physicians from uh all over the states and the world to to be trained here the community is definitely a warm Community our patients are prayed this place has been um a like a starting point for people to progress into their careers our graduates has went to uh uh to many different places and they have high achievements uh in in many [Music] does
