making his preseason debut on Saturday uh the Panthers quarterback is coming off a rookie season though where oh this poor guy he was sacked 62 times many and his team only won two did you say 62 yeah here's Cam Jordan on him I mean what did they protect him with yeah that's what I was about you going into the season and knowing that you know they had um they had one tackle returning that they could rely on and the rest of them were like it was dub right so it's like he his life back no doubt it's something that he was he was not akin to you know like he's used to having the Alabama starting line which each one of them are going to go in the first two rounds do you think this year will be easier for him or absolutely uh I think they spent money on their offensive line this past year they T of money they're like what are you used to let's go get that obviously they're chatting with our very own Mina kimes um to Cam's Point Carolina overhauled their entire offense this year uh they hired Dave Canales as their head coach obviously he did a great job in Tampa also in Seattle the Panthers add protection for Bryce young Robert hunt Damen Lewis they get him some receivers Xavier Legette uh they trade for Deontay Johnson all right so you know they' made some changes some Talent there and this kid is already on his third head coach in his second season uh do you think swag GOI has a chance to make a big jump this year with some of the talent now that they put around him in a new head coach I do believe so Hannah I think if Bryce young showed phenomenal flashes last year when he had time to throw the damn football listen I don't care who you are I I was talking when I was going through notes before the show go look at Tom Braden when he's under pressure and duress that's the greatest we have to ever play this game it don't matter who you are if those guys up front can't protect you enough especially in your first year in the NFL when it's already going 1,000 m an hour when that ball snaps you have no shot at having success in this league Bryce has to clean some things up as well like all young quarterbacks do but I believe with the T and look this is no shade at Adam Thiel but we know Adam Thiel is not a number one wide receiv he's a really good piece that's going to be on this team with Deontay Johnson and uh Legette they G to do it by committee I think he's in a much better situation um to to make the understatement of the year when we go into the football season but the protection will be the key Bryce throws it well he's super accurate understands offense all of the things that made him the first round pick are still there now just give him time to be and show you that he's the first round pick yes swag good when I checked with people in Carolina here are the things they said that Bryce young has improved upon from last year he's had a cleaner operation like less free- snap penalties than they saw in last year's Camp he makes two to three wow throws most days he's been good off play action he's decisive he gets the ball and leads receivers and then really from what I've heard there have been no agendas right everything's going to run through the offensive minded head coach Dave Canales it's a young energetic staff there that they're trying to rebuild his confidence last year you had four or five different coaches sort of year and then you had two head coaches and then there the communication lines were not ideal now from what I've heard they're a lot better yeah really just being on the team and to help Bryce and uh to help him grow obviously it was a year of he had to handle a lot of adversity right there was a lot of things that were kind of stacked against him that uh that he had to try to overcome and had to handle and he's never had a season like that in his life was there a moment or throw or a game from last season that you can point to say that like Bryce is going to be okay and figure it out there was a game we played against the Packers we did not end up winning the game but you could tell he kind of took over in the game and was everything was flowing he was playing on time playing in Rhythm making big plays getting out of the pocket finding guys down on the field and it was a game like okay this is like shows what he can be if we kind of get everything around him built built the way it needs to building blocks especially for a Young quarterback is key confidence is key it's year one it's year yeah year better it's hard to feel worse Pablo I mean Bryce Young's rookie season was basically a case study in how to not set up a rookie quarterback for Success which isn't to say he was entirely blameless he didn't play well but he also played behind a bottom five offensive line throwing to a group of skill players comfortably you would rank in the bottom three I mean I I don't like to paint with too broad of a brush here but when your number one receiver is a peer of you and mine Adam feeling in this case that's generally not a good thing in football now the Panthers have as you alluded to taken steps to rectify this they did invest in the offensive line particularly at the guard position spent a ton of money there they traded for xav per me they traded for Deontay Johnson who's a great separator from the Steelers drafted Xavier Legette I think all of that will help I think Bryce young will play better I don't know if he will flourish and if they'll win a lot of games but this season isn't about winning games it's about evaluating and developing your Young quarterback yeah it's just hard not to think about the draft with him and you want to be moved past this point Mina because his physical comp pre-draft was one of my peers uh which is to say you you stood next to him in a photo and people are like this isn't good the relative uh equinity although you claimed to be wearing heels which you know truthers may disagree uh just not a great start and then the headline on this season his rookie season was historically bad and I think it's unfair for me to come on this show and talk to you and just say the name CJ strout over and over again but I'm going to do it CJ strout had a historically unparalleled rookie season he went number two Bryce young went number one and so when it comes to what he is facing now I think all of the help you outlined is absolutely going to be incredibly useful to him but also I I mentioned that he has a new coach he also has a new GM and you know that if you a quarterback taken even number one overall when you're not the guy for the guys in charge you got to be worried in a new way yeah especially as we've seen more teams willing to move on more quickly from their first picks Steeler the Steelers for example who we're going to talk about later um you talked about the new coach and that is another one another thing I want to hit on with the Panthers CJ strad was so much better in so many ways but he also benefited from better play calling and I am interested in seeing what Dave Canales the new head coach of the Carolina Panthers does with Bryce young because he did a fantastic job with Gino Smith in Seattle Baker Mayfield uh in Tampa Bay it's a big part of why he was hired for this job Pablo on to another quarterback the 2024 NFL season is shaping up to be a pivotal moment
