after a delay of over a month the long- awaited study mapping the hottest places in Fort Wayne started today and we have meteorologist Nathan gidley with us here he was at the study taking place and he joins us with the details well that's right it was finally the perfect hot summer day for a study examining which areas of Fort Wayne heat up unevenly temperatures reached the 90s it was dry and it was not too Breezy out there about 40 volunteers te drove the same routes three times during the day all across the city for this study temperature and air quality sensors were activated and mounted to cars volunteers drove from 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. 3: to 4:00 p.m. and 7 to 8:00 p.m. this was done to gauge what areas were retaining heat longer throughout the day or could be called Urban heat Islands in Fort Wayne now the original Target date was in early July so the volunteer base changed significantly and routs also had to be modified to account for School Bus traffic in new construction areas for the volunteers the project is very rewarding we ask one volunteer Brad Davis what he is most excited about I think just maybe how the results are going to be used um you know talking about the differentials in temperatures as we go through the city you know we hear on the weather report that it hit a high of 93 well maybe out in the suburbs it was 90 maybe downtown it was 101 so you know it will be really handy uh informative to uh to see what differences those are and then what the city does with it information whether it's increased cooling stations or increased green spaces or whatever it is to help with those temperature increases downtown now results are expected to be available in 12 to 15 weeks or so Fort Wayne only one of 14 United States cities participating in this study this summer and when results are available we'll pass them along and we'll look forward to how the city uses them to learn more about the study and how you can get involved with other City projects visit the story on wayne.com media RS this Nathan gidley Wayne 15 news Nathan thank you
