Week One Recap, Week Two Preview, Reddick Contract: Hittin' The Jets EP. 3

welcome to the hitting the Jets pod I your host Nick Anton Otis along with my co-host Owen Doran unfortunately Mike could not be here because today is actually his birthday so happy birthday to Mike um and today we're going to be talking about the first game of the season which happened this previous Monday the Jets ended up losing to the San Francisco 49ers by a final score of 32-19 obviously the biggest story is obviously talking about Aaron rogers's return and then obviously with the announcement of Christian mcaffry being injured and then having Jordan Mason having the game of his life um but we're going to just go right into a discussion I want to discuss with so Owen I'm gonna give you this first question what stood out to you in this game against the Niners uh what stood out to me was how bad their Rush defense was um Jordan Mason had himself a day he finished with 147 yards a touchdown almost had two I'm pretty sure one guy like overturned on a penalty yeah he had one of the best games um week one the Jets couldn't stop the run whatsoever it was definitely a weak point in their defense and was probably the reason why they lost the game and I think what stands out is Christian mcaffry didn't play it was a undrafted free agent who is their third string because Elijah Mitchell's injured so a third string running back just got 147 yards week one against the Jets obviously you know we didn't expect them to win this game we both had them losing week one but I expected their defense to be a little bit stronger um so that's something I was definitely disappointed to see um Debo Samuel also got himself a rushing touchdown um another thing I stood out was Breece Hall wasn't as good as I was kind of hoping he was going to be um I think he finished with around 54 yards on 16 carries so it was a decent game for him but it seemed like in the first half he was it took him a while to get going got that touchdown on the which was a great drive for the Jets in that first quarter he ended up getting the touchdown but other than that I was expecting a bit more from him obviously the Niners have a great defense one of the best in the league but you know that the Run game is what we're going to be depending on a lot this this season so moving forward I'm hoping Bree Hall kind of just picks it up and makes more of a like impact on the games yeah I'm going to double down on the the defense mainly for the Russian defense that was the problem last year that they had and the biggest thing that we were focus on during the off season was to get the defense around that and they just showed that it was just all over the place it was the biggest problem like you mentioned before Jordan Mason had basically the game of his life didn't know that well we're hearing all this stuff about saying like he didn't know that he was playing until Friday and then the KY Shanahan saying oh I announced that he was going to be playing like 30 minutes before the game it's like I don't know what the actual thing is and now people getting Mason's getting pissed off about it but besides the point um then we got another rushan touchdown by Debo um it's been a big problem and it was for last season and it's already a problem this year um I kind of want to talk about a little bit of the positives about the Jets so far obviously s looked like SAU I know he was injured for a little bit of the game but he looked great and um I know that Rogers was a little bit Rusty going into the game um he looked a little bit uncomfortable around the pocket but to be fair like it's his first game back he probably still has the thought his mind about his Achilles he looks pretty good I was happy to see him feel like gting back to the the groove of it I mean the Niners are easily the best team offensively in the NFL um and we knew that this game was going to be a difficult one but I was happy to see Rogers come back and he looked pretty good and he made Alan Lazar look pretty solid as a wide receiver yeah so I mean th those are those are some good stuff to say yeah no that SAU definitely was you know sauce you know Brandon auk didn't have him a great game he obviously he didn't have a training camp so you know you can kind of attribute some of that to that um but s Gardner is still the best corner in the league so I wasn't expecting that uke to have a huge game anyways um Rogers there's definitely some Rust that has to you know be shaken off you know he didn't play in the preseason so I think it's going to take it took him a while to get going in that game as well the entire offense I mean besides that one um Drive where G Wilson I think picked up about like 45 yards almost scored a touchdown at the end of it um but Breeze Hall finished up getting the touchdown other than that the offense didn't really look like it was picking up or moving really that well um they couldn't get into field goal range I think Greg Greg didn't take a single kick until later on into the game um they they definitely need to move the ball down the field a whole lot better um but I think the good thing is is that the Niners is a great test game one of the Season you know it wasn't like they were playing the Vikings or the Panthers and they looked like the same I expect next week when they go up against the Titans we'll talk about that later but I'm expecting them to look a whole lot better yeah so I'm not too worried about um Aaron roders G Wilson looked good um Alan Lazard obviously got two touchdowns um I don't really know who would have thought yeah who would have thought I don't know he finished with like 80 something yards as well didn't he something like that I know 89 yards on six receptions nine targets very interesting obviously Mike Williams is still you know he's still working back from injury so I don't expect I don't expect Lazard to be like that impactful for the Jets this season like obviously some people are going to say like like oh who knows maybe he's going to be more involved I don't think so if he is then great if he's a good Red Zone threat that they can hit up in the end zone and get some touchdowns because Garrett Wilson kind of struggles there that would be great but I don't the fact that Alan theard finished with the most yards and touchdowns I I don't know what to make of the offense really it it goes to show that you know the signing that they did was for Rogers I guess so I guess so but one thing the one the one thing I have to say is I like the comment that Sala said at the end of the game he was like we know what we did wrong and we're not going to make those same mistakes and we're going to focus on that during practice I mean that's exactly what a coach has to say I mean like what what else are they gonna say like oh yeah like we're gonna play the same that we did no um yeah they played a great opponent and they just have to go back to the field practice get things right look I know that the the ners are the best offense in the NFL and they did get crushed a little bit from the Run game especially to a third string running back but this is still a good test for them because going forward you know I mean their schedule is going to look pretty easy which we can we can talk about right now um so next Sunday I believe um they're going to be going up against the Tennessee Titans the Titans were up by 17 points against the Bears and will Levis is just an abysmal quarterb back and he just handed Caleb Williams his first career Caleb Williams didn't even deserve it and Caleb Williams had a horrendous game less than 100 yards it's just it mainly the it was mainly the defense and now yeah um but I want to just talk about the preview of this game going forward so what do you see is going to happen against the Titans um I think the Titans you know people are going to kind of kind of throw them to the side they that this should be an easy win because obviously will Lis isn't the greatest quarterback he didn't have a great game threw a pick six to lose them the game um or at least you know end the game for them um but they do have Tony Pard and Tony Pard wasn't the best last season but he is a decent back he can get yards he can get inside the end zone so because of the r the rush defense that is something that I think everyone should look at obviously I still expect them to win um but I wouldn't be surprised if Tony Pard has himself a day gets over a 100 yards and a couple of touchdowns um so the Jets offense is definitely goingon to have to definitely have gonna have to pick it up they're gonna have to score more um well they got you know three touchdowns isn't it's good but they're going to need to do a little bit more hopefully Bree Hall can also have himself a better day um because I you know I think he he's somebody who could be an offensive player of the year candidate if he you know plays to his potential um which we didn't see on Monday night um but against the Titans I think we're going to see some of that they're not as strong as the Niners they're a bit of an easier opponent so I think a lot of the worries that people are gonna have are GNA kind of go away once they see them next Sunday against the Lesser opponent yeah um I thought it was interesting that fans were already pushing the panic button after watching this uh Niners game was a little bit sloppy um just getting to the swing of things um but knowing that we're going to be going up against the Titans and then the week after we're going to be against the Patriots I start to feel a little bit more confident of this team that they'll get back to the snin I I agree that the Jets are going to easily going to win this game um a lot of people have been saying you know that um Tony Pard was going to be like a terrible addition to this Titans team personally he's he looked pretty good against the um the Bears um and I think that with this uh Russian defense for the Jets um it's going to be a little bit of a tough match against uh Pard I mean it's it's interesting about this Titans team because they have big names they have names like Calvin Ridley they have names like dehop but then they're just absolutely washed up players like they're not the players that they used to be anymore um I think that the Russian game is going to be a little bit of the questionable side for the Jets again this season but this offense just needs to wake up um like I'm not saying that they were bad I'm just saying that you know you have players like Garrett Wilson who he did have a pretty saw game he had a great catch uh Monday night I don't know if you saw that it was just like a someone had face he Randy Moss him um and I I think that Bree Hall is going to bounce back um so and is it at MetLife uh is gonna be at I believe I believe it's at MetLife yeah yeah MetLife okay so HomeField Advantage so I might be wrong about that actually I think it's I think it is I think they're on the road actually I think they're on the road are they okay I I don't know why I thought they were going to be um at MetLife I know they're at MetLife against the Patriots yeah yeah they're on the road um okay so they're in Tennessee G Wilson I think you know we're going to get what we expect out of him he's a fantastic wide receiver just doesn't get the touchdowns that we need which isn't you know that's not an issue he gets everything else he gets down the field um he does all the work to get us into the red zone so I think if Alan Lazard can really step up this season like you mentioned he was signed for Rogers we didn't have Rogers last season we had Zack Wilson who is terrible he's terrible um hopefully bone Nick is bad enough so that we can play Zack Wilson week four and just stomp on him because that game is IM life that would be amazing that would be enjoyable so maybe Lazard will be a bit more energized this season now that he has Rogers quarterback that he's more comfortable with and hopefully he can be that Red Zone threat for us um for the rushing defense I think there's one thing that the Jets can do it's an obvious thing that they can do to just kind of settle everyone's woses about that and it's just sign Hassan reic get the contract done um it's it's that simple it's that simple um they they lost Bryce Huff he was one of their best pieces on defense last year especially for The Rush game pass rush run defense all of it get Hanan reic done like we need him it became very clear against the ners that we need Hassan reck on this team I believe it was being talked about he's in New Jersey now he's in New York so he's around don't know if he's going to be open to negotiating um still he's pretty firm on his numbers just get it done just get it done the window short get it done we mentioned in the last I don't know if it was the last pod or it was um the first podcast that we had I remember someone me I think it was Mike he mentioned that just look at the game that happened on the ners and know that if the running game was terrible go out and just extend this man go out and give him the money that he wants and look the running game was terrible show that we actually need reic we needed uh someone who would help fill the holes that we had with losing Bryce Huff so we got to get that deal done and also he Lo he's losing money as games are going on I mean I saw a stat that in the first game he lost $800,000 and then since that he's not with the team and he's not practicing or whatever he's already lost like $5 million yeah I think it's yeah somewhere around like5 to6 million so I think you know maybe he is willing to kind of BU on a few things I think if they can get like a two threee deal done that would be Team friendly because obviously you know he he had a down year last year wasn't the same as he was the years before and he's getting up there in age he's looking to get those big money deals and with multiple years just so he's locked in and secured um but he's going to be losing money every day that he doesn't go to practice and then every Sunday that he doesn't play so I think you know maybe if they can bring him down to like two three years give him majority of it in a signing bonus just because you know cap reasons um just get it done like that's simple as that um they need they need the defense the r the Run game was working perfectly for the ners they ran all over us with a third string can't be having letting that happen every week like they they weren't exactly good last year with the run defense I think they ranked like somewhere 2930 so they were one of the wor worst run defenses last year and then they lost Bryce Huff so they're even worse now so moving forward we're going to need we're gonna need Hanan reck yeah it's in their best interest to get that deal done yeah and then this coming Sunday we're going up against Tony Pard and then the week after I know it's going to be against the Patriots but they're going to be going up against Steverson I mean those are two very good running backs they're not Jordan Mason and Jordan Mason got what would you say like 130 147 14 Jesus Christ my God and he one touchdown could have been two but after the holding and the ners have so many weapons they have Brandon auk they have Debo Samuel they have Brandon um George KD the Titans and the Patriots more or less just have those two guys from Andre Stevenson and Tony Pard the Run heavy offenses so they're going to be going to their running backs for the majority of their plays and if the Jets don't have an answer for that it's going to be an issue we on our defense to keep these teams to below 21 points that's how we that's the games we won last year where because the defense held them and the offense was good enough to get one or two touchdowns like those are the gamesi goal I mean there was there was one game two years ago where what was it 33 with the Patriots and then they lost on the the punt return so yeah they the defense needs to hold these teams down um in order for the offense to have any kind of hope I think most of the but most of the def Defenders have like shown that they're still you know there s was very good DJ Reid was awesome uh Michael Carter he I think he did get hurt um but he was pretty solid but obviously we're just talking about the Russian defense which the defense was still overall good they put Brock P Under Pressure the corner did their jobs the defense was good against a good offense I just think with these next games coming up we have the Titans Patriots and the Broncos um they're G the Broncos not so much but the Patriots and Titans for sure they're going to have to pay attention to the Run yeah a lot yeah I agree with that um another question that I kind of wanted to ask you this Owen is that I know we saw um you know Aaron rogers's first game back um obviously you know there was some questionable moments you know in the first half he looked a little bit Rusty he you know he had that really bad interception but I wanted to ask your opinion what do you how do you feel about Aaron Rogers game I thought he had a decent game they didn't go to him a lot he only had 21 attempts 13 um completions so it wasn't you know he wasn't utilized as much as I was kind of expecting um the one pick you know it kind of is what it is got tipped and caught yeah nothing you can really do about those ones um I think you know there was glimpses of that classic Rogers that we know and want um on the free play where they got the Lazard touchdown um that was that was a glimpse at what we want to see from Rogers so I think moving forward that is what we're I'm hoping to get and I'm expecting it at least um overall I think you know he didn't play all of last season it's been a year since he's played football he didn't play in preseason so it's expected that he's going to be a little rusty so I'm not too worried about him um it's kind of just expected when you don't play for that long you're 39 years old you're playing against the the San we they're playing against San Francisco great team I think for everything that was he was up against he did pretty good and then Tyrod Taylor came in in the end and he looks great as well yeah I was happy I was I was happy that we actually signed a a good quarterback yeah know um my personal opinion about uh Rogers I kind of saw in the first quarter it did look like he was a little bit I mean look he didn't have he didn't play a single game for like over a year and he didn't play in the preseason it did look like he was a little bit Rusty in the first quarter he did give the ball to Bree a ton like there was a lot of moments that like you know the defense didn't really help him that much and he was about to be rush and then he was like [ __ ] and he just tossed it to Bree um there was a lot of moments that I saw there but there was a lot of cool not really cool moments that's that's the wrong word to say but a lot of really good moments like you know the touchdown by Lazard it was just perfect throw to him that's a vintage Aaron Rogers right there Vint Rogers that was vintage Rogers and making those uh questionable throws that you know someone like a Garrett Wilson make really nice catches for I like seeing that because you know that's how a top quarterback is um and now we do have a good backup in to Rod Taylor so if anything ever happens to Rogers we actually have someone that has experience I mean he looked pretty good when he was with the Giants so finally we have someone that can actually hold down the fort and not have someone like a Zack yeah I know it's like the entire season doesn't depend on Rogers this year exactly if he goes down they'll actually still have a chance at making the playoffs probably not win the Super Bowl but they still have a chance at division even I mean we can talk about this after but the division is looking really strong so that's going to be something so but I think Tyrod Taylor could have the potential to top it and even get in the wild card um but for Rogers yeah I think it's a lot of the dump off pass to Bree Hall that led to the fumble that was wasn't the highest IQ play that was than that yeah other than that though I think he had a pretty solid game kind of just needs to get the rust um shaken off and I think the Titans is the perfect opponent for him to just kind of go after it and just kind of just I I don't know the word for it but just basically open his season really yeah just get back to the have fun with it get back into the swing of things get Bree uh get Bree Hall some touchdowns get Garr Wilson some yards get him some receptions and just have a good game that's the game for the offense to really wake up build up some momentum so these this stretch of games especially not just the Titans yeah Titans Patriots Broncos and I think it's the Vikings the Vikings four games those four games is where the Jets need to build up some momentum and depending on how they play in those four games I think we'll make or break their season yeah not that they'll lose them but if they're tight games I can't feel that confident going for it but if there blowouts or you know just really strong offensive games I think that you know that's going to say a lot for the Jets absolutely um the one thing I was really excited to see when Rogers became a jet was that finally he's going to be you know gain throws to Zach Wilson um and now we're finally seeing it this year um and I I just like how he's trying to give to more other people like it's not like you know he's obviously just giving it to Wilson he's not well he's giving it a lot to Hall but you know he's he gave two touchdowns to Lazard um the whole Mike Williams situation he did just come back from a torl so he's getting they're easing him back into it so I'm expecting him to come back pretty soon and then you know you're gonna have a pretty solid wide receiver core after seeing Lazard get two touchdowns you got to feel confident that this is going to be a pretty solid wide receiver core for the Jets overall so I'm happy about say one thing you could say that was a little disappointing with the wide receivers though is we didn't get to see Malachi Corley rookie didn't get to see him on the return team either I thought you know they might have wanted to use him on special teams this year just you know give them some reps give them some game time um who knows it was the first game of the season he's only a rookie wasn't like a first round pick or anything so yeah um hopefully we do get to see him though moving um further into the season um because it's just you want to see these guys who you pick you want to see if they're any good M you want to see if you know you can lean on them going moving in Into the Future yeah I agree with that um I'm just excited to see what's gonna happen um like I know Jet fans they're already hating the uh what's the word I'm trying to think uh the pan Buton thank you honestly if you just see like if after the Vikings series they can be four four in one honestly Titans are not good Patriots I think that's what we we predicted as well yeah we predicted that um Patriots they you know they upseted the Bengals but you know forget about that Broncos only I'm really worried about with the Patriots is Christian Gonzalez and rre Stevenson Christian Gonzalez is clearly one of the League's best corners like he obviously his season was cut short last year um but I see numbers like he locked he kept uh Tyreek Hill to zero receptions in one of his games like every single game that he has played has been against a top level receiver and he has more or less shut them down yeah but I mean like going back to what I was saying about Rogers is that he's giving opportunities for everyone so let's just say you know Gonzalez will be going up against Wilson because they have a history of going up against each other yep you still have Lazard you still have Williams you still have Hall so I'm not they run I think they'll run all over the Patriots um just the one guy they'll have to avoid is Christian Gonzalez but I'm not too worried about that because they can just run all over them with Bree Hall and hopefully Mike Williams is ready to go at that point and they have him Lazard and Hall just to lean on as well um so one last thing before we end our show give me a quick a score prediction for next week uh next week uh I think I think Bree Hall will get two and then Rogers will get two so what's what's that bring us to mathematically uh 24 yeah oh that's going to be plus the 28 yeah yeah plus the uh extra points I think you know they'll get a couple field goals as well um let's just go 28 10 okay 281 so I think is gonna get two yeah I think um Wilson and Lazard are going to each get one and and Pard will Rush one in and they'll get a field goal um I'm actually going to say okay I'm going to have to do the math here as well um so I'm gonna go three one with hall and then I'm gonna go I'm actually gonna go two with Rogers two of them being to Wilson um so that would be 21 and then I'm going to say I'm going to go with an extra field goal so it's going to be 24 I'll get I'll do 24 to 14 and then have Pard get a touchdown and then um cevin Ridley get a touchdown as well why not should be good before we go I do want to ask you after week one obviously we both had the Jets winning the division Dolphins coming second has anything changed how you expect this season to go for the AFC East obviously we saw the bills were great um there defense obviously could have been a little bit better they were going up against the Cardinals let them score a lot but overall I think Josh Allen had one of the best games this weekend two tou two throwing touchdowns two rushing touchdowns he was on fire and then the Dolphins were also on fire Tyreek Hill not slowing down one bit um so has anything changed in your mind honestly no because because the Cardinals were not a good team the Jaguars are not a good team um and the Patriots I think that was a a lucky win for them to go the Bengals I mean yeah I didn't bring Jo wasn't yeah um I mention they not good it's it's week one I'm not gonna I'm not sweating right now so I'm gonna I still have confidence that they're gonna win the division but I think are a bit better than people kind of were expecting them to be um without Stefon Diggs obviously Gabe Davis he's with the Jaguars now um Curtis Samuel had a good game though Keon Coleman was pretty good um James Cook wasn't used that much um overall I mean they were a lot better than I was expecting I I had them missing the Playoffs but I think they might squeak into that wild card spot now I think it's just that Josh Allen is now doing a ton I mean two rushing touchdowns um it's it's good to see that Josh Allen's doing a lot but also it's kind of concerning because you know what happens if that one rushing touchdown involves an injury I mean that's how Carson wants toward his ACL true you never know um just tank as well could just empty it could just empty his tank though like he was clearly giving more in that game than he would last year he just wouldn't have to do as much for the team but because there's no digs and you know the defense isn't as strong he's going to be on the field more and just needs to do more so maybe that could be worrying down the line um if he just kind of burns out but if he can play like that for 17 games then I think we have an MVP oh yeah hands down um so I think that's a good time that we can stop right
