well that team from La is in Hawaii to start the season the Deshawn Foster error Begins for UCLA foru his first game has a big 10 member on CBS and Hawaii well they came ready to play you see that entrance they're not playing around their first drive fourth and six so they're going to punt right no Lucas barl fakes it UCLA has a very delayed reaction he gets 19 yards crazy call to start the game but I like the aggressiveness later in the drive first and 10 br shager the throw to pelli ashlock for the 19 yard score Hawaii lead 7even nothing the Bruins struggling early in their first game of the season the late first uscl still down seven nothing third and five on a y six Ethan Garber rolls out to his right looking looking picked off by Jaylen Smith In The End Zone tough first half from garbage to say the least gets worse first and 10 on their six garage almost taken to the ground in the endzone so he decides to throw it to avoid the safety only problem is he finds Logan Taylor who plays for Hawaii that will lead to an Hawaii field goal to go up 10- nothing at the half third time being out for UCLA for the first half in the first half in the last five seasons now their first drive in the second they're still down 10 nothing play action garage the Deep ball to Rico Flores Jr 39 yds they're down three garbage redeeming himself then late third garbers steps up in the pocket great presence defined Flores who takes it for for a 53 yd reception that would lead to a Bruins field goal to cut the deficit to 1310 so now we move ahead to the fourth game tied at 13 garbage with a chance to put together a game-winning drive three minutes left what are you made of Son first and 15 on their own 35 Garber oh garbers connects with Miki matava for the 21 yd gain couple plays later first and 10 garbage throw to Flores got it 10 yards then two plays later third and five on a wise 22 he scrambles rolls out to his left gets four yards that sets up a 32 yd field goal attempt for the Bruins with 59 seconds left here's the attempt matin bani can he get it done and be the hero 32 yards out he does their first lead of the game 16 to 13 and now the Bruins is trying to hold off the upset Hawai trying to get into field goal range only got 8 seconds shager looking finds ashlock but he gets stripped Brian Addison recovers the fumble to end the game and UCLA holds on to win this one 16-13 Deshawn Foster he gets his very first win as a Collegiate head coach and for the Bruins it's their fourth straight win in a season opener and for why if you're thinking about this game you really missed out on a chance to pull off a really big upset as you had them down 10 nothing in the first half but that's why you play four quarters of football and the Bruins did just enough to secure the victory here on Saturday time now for our Hawaii UCLA recap built by the Home Depot how doers get more done and speaking of how doers get more done uh Ethan garbers got more done to say the least in that second half Emory I'll start with you uh what do you think change from the offensive perspective for UCLA to pull this one out remember at halftime we talked about the rush attempts have to be there they had seven rushing attempts in the first half second half or they finished the game with 20 so they were plus 13 running the football still not enough but definitely more than what they did in the first half so that kind of calmed the offensive line down which allowed garvers to really get hot in the second half he had two interceptions in the first half no interceptions in the second half and had a touchdown pass so because the running game the attempts was there the offensive line protection was there Garber got in the Rhythm and really LED them down the field for a victory yeah it was a tale of two halves for both teams especially the quarterback play you talked about garbers at halftime he was six of 18 a 69 yards two interceptions he finished the game 19 of 38 272 yards one touchdown he didn't have any turnovers in the second half with the smart football that he was displaying it led his offense it gave his OPP his offense an opportunity to be able to get into the red area and score big time points and then when you transition to UCLA's defense especially in the secondary a very very opportunistic group from a year ago we saw those same like plays happen in the second half when you look at for and Brandon Sher shagger to throw two costly turnover two interceptions in the second half that gave the the offense Prime position to be able to put points on the scoreboard yeah DJ Justice had a huge interception to help UCLA kind of regain things but when it comes to the Big 10 outlook for the Bruins it's only one game but does it change what you thought either of you and in terms of what they'll be able to do because I think for me I was expecting them to put up much more of a dominant effort even though it is year one and you have a lot of new pieces Emory no listen I said five right we got one down one down four more to go guys so and for me when you're thinking about UCLA and how they played the reason why I like victories like this for young teams and new coaching staffs because this is something that they can hang their hats on hey look guys we fought through this adversity we played our worst game and we were able to come out on the other side and do a great job to finish strong and not only play better but also win so this is the type of foundational games that can be built so that way they can go down that stretch of tough games that they have and maybe pull off five or six wins but you know I still say five but you know so you got one but build winning games like this on the road hostile environment in Hawaii hostile hostile it's it's not hostile it's not hostile on that note I got to I got to cut you off man you know what I'm saying I got to cut you off CU you triing you tripping right there you know what I'm saying talking about five or six but again the Bruins win 16 at 13 Deshawn Foster gets his first win as head coach of the UCLA Bruins matin bani had the game winning field goal to give UCLA the win and for more on this game we go back out to one member of the crew who called the game Ross Tucker and Ross in the first half UCLA probably played that as bad as they could but in the second half it felt like at least to me that they kind of calmed things down a little bit with especially with quarterback Ethan garbage what did you see from the offensive end from the Bruins well Chris I totally agree and really if you think about the first half they look like a team playing in their first game of the season with the new offensive coordinator with the new head coach and Ethan Garber made quite frankly a couple of egregious errors which is why it's so impressive the way he was able to gather himself and play so much better in the second half that's not not easy I mean you know at halftime you're looking around in the locker room at the other guys you know you're one of the biggest reasons why the team is losing and you're letting them down to be able to then put the team on his back and play as well as he did in the second half says a lot about garbers I think bodess well for how he'll play for the Bruins moving forward the rest of this season all right so speaking about moving forward for the rest of the season as you look at their big 10 schedule it is a gauntlet so they're going to face some very tough stiff competition how does this change or maybe keep your your same opinion about the Bruins when it comes to how they're going to Faire in the Big [Music] 10 well I think the way they played in this second half makes me think that they can be pretty competitive with almost everybody they play against in the Big 10 I mean the first half obviously was about as bad as it gets being down 10 nothing to Hawaii but in the second half they slow down Hawaii's high-powered run and shoot offense I mean all Hawaii got in the second half was one field goal goal and then obviously UCLA able to score all their points in the second half so if they can keep playing you know in their big 10 slate the way they did in the second half I think they'll be right there because they've got legit Talent almost everywhere you look Harden in the backfield garber's at quarterback they're receivers they obviously have some really good players on the defensive side of the ball as well so I think the talent is good enough that they can be a solid competitive Big 10 team and be in the mix for a bowl as as long as they're able to play the way they did here in the second half tonight all right so yeah that's something that they're going to have to keep going forward but when it comes to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors right they had a great first half or a good first half then in the second half they kind of made some bad mistakes right um what do you think is their outlook for the rest of the season as this was a game that I felt like they wasted an opportunity to shock some of the people in the country totally agree yeah I mean they were they they had the game game they were in control they obviously dominated the first half I think that's one of the reasons why you need to give UCLA's coordinators some credit for the adjustments they were able to make in the second half to really stifle Hawaii's offense I think shager the quarterback Braden shager being banged up with his ankle was a factor in the second half as well Hawaii had some drops I think that they will be one of the better teams in the Mountain West I really do there's some good teams we saw what Boise State and Ashton Genty did today we saw what UNLV did tonight but I think Hawaii has the Firepower and the returning starters and experience to be in the top half of the league and to be in this thing until the end that definitely wouldn't surprise me surprise me especially with a guy like pelli ashlock he was locked in one of the most exciting players in the game on here on Saturday Ross Tucker we appreciate the time man
