Županja, Croatia – July 2, 2024. After the storm hit the southern part
of Croatia, on the afternoon of July 2, the same thing happened in the eastern
part of the country. At around 16:00, there was hail the size of hazelnuts
in Županja, followed by heavy rain, and the temperature dropped by more than
five degrees in one hour, to 15 degrees. Currently, the city government does not have data
regarding the extent of damage caused by the ice, but according to them, the damage
caused is undoubtedly large. Apart from agricultural crops, the gardens of
Županja residents were also affected. According to local farmers, the area along
the Sava River was the most affected area, where the most severe crop damage
occurred. Pear trees planted on six hectares of land were reported to have
experienced around 90 percent damage. while according to netizens, heavy rain and hail
hit this city and its surroundings in the western part of Srijem, and several settlements were left
without electricity. Many roads were flooded. The strength of the storm was also
visible from surveillance camera footage which recorded several
irresponsible drivers stopping their cars under the A3 flyover to
protect themselves from the hail. local media announced that scattered
showers were possible during the day, and locally stronger and more numerous,
especially in eastern Croatia. Traffic on the Grubišno Poljie-Daruvar district
road in Donja Rašenica was disrupted due to water on the road. The road was closed at 16.00 due to
overflowing rainwater from the drainage canal, in the section between Donja Rašenica and Gornja
Rašenica, and at the entrance to Selo Ivanovo. in addition, the hailstorm also reached
Slavonia in the afternoon. This time, residents in areas affected by the
storm did not receive warning messages. Slavonski Brod, Vinkovci, Vukovar and
surrounding areas experienced the worst conditions. In Bošnjaci, a village near Županja,
hailstorms damaged the roofs of many houses. The storm also reached Vinkovci, where
construction scaffolding collapsed onto the street. Unfortunately, the damage is extensive
and the impact will be clearer tomorrow morning.
