FIRST TAKE | Desmond Howard tell Stephen A.: Kalen DeBoer will replicate Saban's success in 1st year

his 12 team college football playoff predictions rather uh this is the first season the playoff moves to 12 teams doggy has Georgia Alabama Michigan Ohio State on top of the list with Penn State in the Big 12 Championship right behind them Boise State Oregon Old Miss Notre Dame and Texas round out his top 12 on that note we bring in our guy Desmond Howard live from Dublin Dez how are you I'm doing fantastic gles on to try to read that list that was hey what's going on brother how you guys doing what's up mad dog I like call me hey M dog it's good to be on TV with you but that list um I got some issues with the list brother I think um yeah what issu you just put Big 12 champ you just put Big 12 did you even pick a champ you said Big 12 champ a man that's I mean that's a weird conference that's because I got so many different teams in it It's tricky to pinpoint the one the the the issue is I don't think there'd be two teams out of that big 12 I think the first issue you got to talk about there is the idea that the Big 10 and the SEC is going to get a lot of these slots how many slots do they get you know Georgia's going to make it Alabama's going to make it Michigan's going to make it Penn State Old Miss is pretty good Ohio State's going to get in there's a lot of Team Texas there a a lot of teams conference yeah yeah how do we know about pen how do we know about Penn State you got Penn State is top five what you think about that yeah I got in got that's the first thing that jumps out Penn State at top five well how did you come to that conclusion well look at their schedule number one schedule's not that tricky I mean they play at USC they only have one of the big two Penn State's going to win he always wins the games he's supposed to win it's Penn State quarterback's back they lose what two games they're going to get one of those slots they're the third best team in the conference are they the third best team in the Big 10 hey or fourth best Oregon did I put Oregon in there I did didn't I yes I put Oregon in there yes yeah but you have Oregon behind Penn State well I give you an order State don't go crazy on the order I mean Sam wants me to see how does Sam want me to see teams on It's Sammy it's August 20th I supposed to see the te I mean it's January we play this stupid thing and you want me to see need the team Sam I named you the team Sammy what else do you want okay Sam's our producer in case people are wondering who's getting thrown under the bus right now and he's incredible I can't I mean geez I'll let Stevie do that I'm not going to se him but the Penn State Oregon Michigan and Ohio State the four out of the Big T okay that changes everything I thought those were the actual seeds because that's how we kind of do this now you have to see them so I listen I still don't like your list but now that I know it wasn't the actual seeds I can see where you were trying to go and navigate through this whole 12 team playoff but mad dog if you're G to do this they have to tell you you have to seeed these teams you just can't pick them and just throw them up there randomly but I understand you got some bad Intel we'll try again next time Dez I gotta ask you because the other day I got into a heated discussion with Mr Paul fine bomb himself who had the audacity the all to come on national television and talked about how it was going to be a challenge for Alabama to be in the playoffs I said 12 teams a four what you talking about what you mean he is going to be a challeng for Alabama excuse me kayin de Bo is there right now I understand Nick Savin is Nick Savin but if we're talking about Alabama I don't want to hear that it's going to be a challenge for them to make a 12 team playoff because of Georgia and Old Miss and all of I I don't want to hear that am I wrong in feeling that way well I think Stephen they um I understand where you're coming from like I I get the sentiment but the U the fact of the matter is kayin dor is a hell of a coach fantastic coach but this is uncharted waters even for him now going to the SEC he's going to have to get his guys up every single week for challenges that he's never had to face at any level in which he's coached even when he was out there in the Pack 12 and I mean I gotta give credit what credits do the Pack 12 was one of the most competitive conferences last season but with that being said they're still not the SEC so I understand where he's going with that it's going to take a while for Kaylin dor and his staff to get used to that you know it's just a rough road every week no matter who the opponent is cuz don't forget now you have that Bulls out on your back because you're still Alabama you're going to get everyone's best shot but they also think now they have a chance they have a shot because Nick Sabin isn't the head coach anymore and this is our opportunity to knock off Alabama so I understand where Paul was going with that he went with the teams who I mean they got the the coaches who've been in in been at their universities part of that program for years so I understand the the Georgia the Texas the old miss those teams that look that favorably coming into the 2024 season y' Y I I I just want to say this I just want to make this statement before I move on from this subject you know listen Kaylin the bo Nick Sav is Nick Sav seven time National Champion I get all of that but who is kayin dor I mean the man has won 90% of his games as a college coach he's gone 25 and three over the last two seasons I'm sorry he's the two-time Pack 12 Coach of the Year I mean what why are we talking about I mean I understand he's in the SEC as opposed to the Pack 12 but I'm sorry it ain't like he walked over to Alabama and every person on the roster left I mean most of them are still there you understand that competed in the SEC that by the way knocked off Georgia in the SEC title game by the way Kirby Smart is one in five versus Alabama 49 and one versus everybody else okay now you can say that's Nick Sabin all I'm trying to say is those players were they at Alabama when they were in the playoffs last year against Michigan and it was Georgia that was home because after being a reigning two-time Defender National Champion they ran into Alabama and you know they received their come upet I just don't understand it but go ahead I got it all right Dez you got the final word here and then you got to roll I'm told okay no so mad I thought he was GNA talk yeah well listen you're right Stephen I mean some players did stay especially Jaylen milro and that's always key you got that Cornerstone player a guy like jayen milro who is U you know people think that he may contend for the highman this year at the quarterback position but as I'm going through my my my my list of players for different teams and I'm looking at their teams their names in bold print and then the name of the team that they transferred from there are a lot of guys who stayed there's no doubt about that Stephen but there also some guys who left there was a mass Exodus too once Nick Sabin said he was retiring so we have to see how are they going to feel those spots those holes you know and and some of the big you know positions like safety like Caleb DS he went to Ohio state that was one of their best players on their team so you do have some transfer the center who was there a year ago he went to Ohio State so I know there's some guys who stay Stephen A but there also some key figures some key players who departed can I say something Molly as we end here remember college football is going to have a sort of an NBA NHL baseball regular season fi it's not what you do Texas at Michigan Georgia at Alabama late September it's pacing yourself you're playing extra games conference championships you got to win three games minimum to win a title or if you don't end up in the top seeds so you can have a so so season lose two three games and then all of a sudden get in a postseason and get hot that never used to happen Dez so it's going to be an interesting different kind of feel to the NCAA regular season
