[Music] the Spirit of Detroit YouTube this is Avery Giovani checking in talking Jake Bates today yes Jake Bates four for four field goal attempts made four for four made them from the 55 to 43 32 23 and the 43 y was the game winner I feel that Jake Bates is our kick of the future I don't know if that's a term but he is our kicker he is our Jason Hansen Matt Prader he is our fan favorite I think Jake Bates is a fan favorite just off the leg strength just off the the crazy kicks he can make from yards and yards away uh in this in this video I'm not just going to break down um the made field goal kicks but I'm going to break down what Campbell said about field goal kickers I feel like this is actually pretty good of an indication where he wants Jake Bates to go and where he feels comfortable and confident with J B's going in the future so let's sit back let's Chow Down let's subscribe also and let's get in this uh film of Dan Campell I know it's the uh preseason but you wanted to see said you want to see PR situations yeah I guess response yeah it was uh you know it was I was I was fired up you know I needed to see that and quite frankly I I I felt like he would drill that you know I it's um you know it's little things I mean you can't you got to be careful but it's like man we we had this folding competition the other day right and he's in the championship and he he makes two critical throws in crunch time and it's like no it's not kicking but yet there's something about this kid that's intriguing and you know he's got a little bit of confidence to him he's got a little bit of um something and you just you know you don't know you always you kind of memory bank those little those things that come up and then you see what he's done you know over the last couple of weeks um you know and it's it's encouraging and believe me FIP and I both know look he hasn't arrived um and there's going to be there's still going to be more Growing Pains that come with this and we just got to be patient and just let him continue to grow and that's what's most important as long as he doesn't ever go in the tank or lose confidence or man just keep doing what you do you're not going to make them all but you keep getting better than you know this kid you know he's got something his leg strength and and the you fact that he's sort of come up big in some of these moments how might that change your aggressive uh yeah I don't know I you know it'll have to be uh you'll have to ask me when I'm in the moment or after a game you know I'm I'll tell you maybe probably not but um you know it's it's hard to say I mean um I would say what makes you feel good is if you know uh you have everything at your supp you can do anything you need to do at any time and offense defense special teams um you know kicking game all of that so uh you know anytime you can gain confidence and uh in that in your kicker and and but also putting him in position to have success I think that's part of it too man you know um and then okay for him to have success where is that range you know some kickers you you don't you know you got to keep it below the 30 maybe I don't know some I'm talking about through the whole league some hey if you can get it under 35 we don't know what is that range for him we're still learning what he is and and where he's comfortable at and where he's going to hit these high marks so we'll just we'll keep taking it as it comes now I understand uh Dan Campbell a little more than most YouTubers and I think I understand what he's saying here and feel free put it in the comments tell me if I'm wrong or not but I think it's a a question of not Jake Bates making a team but when to kick and when not to kick right this team is built on grit determination toughness and all these factors that you don't want to lose we were 52% uh with fourth down calls we were 52% so we have that toughness we have that grit we have that fight but do you want your quasi rookie kicker from the UFL to kick you out of a game and to win the game for you all the time that situation is not ideal you have a potent offense you have a offense that is built to win in every category uh you can you can shake up the field any way you want deep to Jameson Williams you can go with Aman rossing Brown and you got Jared G as your quarterback you have a stout running game you have everything in the situation not to kick game-winning field goals you have everything at your disposal and those factors are going to matter especially in games that are going to matter against the Vikings week 17 week 18 that's going to matter against San Francisco that's going to matter do you want to be conservative in those situations probably not but you create a you create this dichotomy where it's aggressiveness versus conservativeness you're being aggressive to be aggressive to keep your identity and you're being conservative to uh to almost go against that identity so I understand there's a balance to this there's a appropriate amount of balance plus he is a rookie kicker say what you want but he's a rookie kicker because there's psychological factors that go into that um if you ask him to kick from these crazy amounts of of kicking Ro and we need the win you might put too much on him you might put a psychological Factor where he let his team down and he win the tank and in his interview and I'mma play it in a minute in his interview he was talking about how he missed a extra point uh so he he harps on those type of things and he knows this is his shot and you know you got a 24 year old cooker Phenom from the UFL you got to you got to take it easy on him but you also want to demand more from him so there's a dichotomy there now to Lions fans like you and me obviously we want them to kick we want them to win the game take the points do all this other stuff um and in in certain situations that's going to matter right against San Francisco I would want that to matter but you know it's it's a balance to it it's appropriate amount of balance and appropriate amount of Leverage you got to give the kicker the coaching staff and you know you got to give that to Brad Holmes too Brad Holmes just wants to build weapons up and acquire weapons and this kicker to me is a weapon so if you ask me kick for the points if you ask me kick every time if it's 27 to 10 kick for the points um you know just just kick for the points to to loosen up the score so what are you going to do Dan Campbell are you going to be conservative to just be conservative or are you going to be aggressive to just be aggressive I think there's a certain amount of tack that you have to do in these situations and every situation is going to be uh different you're not going to play the Houston Texas the same way you do the Arizona Cardinals you're not going to play San Francisco the same way you do Arizona or the Rams so it's really on him to see what he's gonna do how he's gonna do it and if he's gonna really kick for the points or go for two I don't think any opponent can beat us at this point um there's only one opponent that can really beat us on the a NFC side so and oh yeah I got to include this because this is key and I'll close out the video with this no one's going to call you a conservative team if you dwindle down fourth down calls or fourth down conversions no one's going to question your grit determination leadership no one's going to question that um but obviously you know you you have a rookie kicker as I stated before even though he's been a part of the league but he's never been the guy he is now the guy so you don't want to make him like automatic Justin Tucker but for me for most Lions fans this guy is legatron this before game and say hey we want to maybe put you in these certain situations do you know at all what they're trying to accomplish with you going into a game or you just stay ready and called upon you do your job kind of just called upon do my job um whenever they feel you know the need to bring out the the field goal unit um it's my job to go out there and make the kick so um I'm I'm really low key I don't really talk much on game day um and just kind of get ready to do my job whenever that's called upon me and I know you say you stay even and we came in here a little late so I apologize if you already answered this but when it is a game winning kick like that even preseason and you're going out there is it are you a little bit amped just give me kind of the sense of what your emotions are and if they are high how do you bring them back to level I think a lot of it is is having confidence in who you are and um you know I'm I kick but I but I like to say I'm not I'm not a kicker I'm a I'm a sinner saved by Amazing Grace and um you know he's put me in this in this um position um to to share his name and spread his word and you know whatever circumstance it may be that's what I'm going to try to do and hopefully that's you know when people look at me they don't see made kick Mis kick they see um a guy that's trying to glorify his Lord and Savior so kind today [Music] the
