the countdown officially begins we're 100 days out from the bison and Colorado head coach Tim POC we'll preview that we got a busy hot mic it begins right now hot mik with dom ISO really really Dom I like what Dom's doing Dom ISO jeez come on Dom what do you think I am a magician yeah I'm fired up Dom what else could I say absolutely I was great to get on the field and then Dom came up to me and I'm trying to walk away from you I just wanted to enjoy myself out there hot mik great job there's got to be some kind of intelligent question about something is hot mik hot mik on the networks of wdy you know if it's not about sports I find it very hard to concentrate here's Dom ISO Dom ISO good Tuesday Morning welcome to the summerest over began edition of hot Mike on wdy extra KFL TV and sou Falls and inforum.com on this 21st day of May 2024 yeah it's supposed to be rainy today but that's not going to dampen anything around here super excited we got the Timberwolves game one opener tomorrow night with Dallas and for you weirdos out there myself included today Begins the official countdown today right now we are 100 days that we're going to have a Graphic we're going to start I think on the show to get us ready for the countdown we are because Summer's over before it even began a 100 days before the Bison season opener against Colorado done this for 13 some odd years I've done this countdown um irritating thousands be considering uh wishing the summer away but uh it is exciting to know but uh it's out there now now there's a a pal there's a date to know that we're we're closing in on uh the start of the Season before we get into anything that happened last night well this did actually happen last night uh was a pretty Monumental day in the uh in the iso household last night been looking forward to this for a while last night began uh t-ball for one Jackson ISO and one he's been excited about it forever my son and we we've seen different I've showed different videos of him in the backyard of him clobbering the ball off the tea there he is look at the guy the Cubs had I've lost the battle on we're going to have to just deal with it we've already the video we've played over and over of him singing Go Cubs go but look at the little guy he told me and my wife Courtney that he was he he was so excited to go and they ran around uh the bases last night he was the first one to shout out because the the coach asked you know as they're getting ready to run the bases the coach said what's this plate and or what's this base and Jack was the first to say home plate my guy he was right on top of that um got to work a little bit on the Fielding um he's much like his dad on that not getting his butt down enough to make sure the ball doesn't go between his legs um but he had a ball it was so it was really a lot of fun so I wanted to share that before uh we started our show this morning the hitting is coming and that will be an exhibition I can tell you that right now he's already he's already got uh he's got the swing down I told Chris Coast like hey if the Hawks need a left-handed bat he's ready he's already uh he's already set and ready to go so uh that was a lot of fun excited about that we got another day we got this now for the next month and a half I want to say so we're pretty pumped about that lots to get to today we mentioned the countdown officially uh is underway we're efforting Tim POC he's on the road uh recruiting but I believe we're going to be able to get him for a few minutes uh this morning uh just to chat now as the official countdown to Colorado we know the we know the day we know the time we know the network all of that and we'll chat a little bit about that coming up later on in the show speaking of the NCA this is uh the topic we've talked about frequently over the last couple weeks and it's going to hit everybody between the eyes that follows college sports this week the NCA versus house case this grand house is a former Arizona State swimmer and the repercussions of this settlement the settlement part of it is the really the Sticky Wicket on why schools like NSU UND South Dakota South Dakota State Montana Montana State should be poed to no end there's a lot of numbers to this and I know that makes people's eyes glaze over but it's important we're going to rip the Band-Aid off of that coming up later on uh in the show as well we'll also chat on a more Regional level some huge college realignment news uh something that we got tipped off about a few weeks ago when Dennis McCulla joined us Valley City State athletic director it'll become official today that the Vikings along with mville State and a couple other schools are joining the frontier conference that will become official about 2 o'clock today and uh we'll get into the specifics of that I believe we're going to have uh either both or one of the ads from Valley City or Mayville on the show uh tomorrow so a lot to get to on that also one other scheduling note before we get rolling today after much negotiation uh we have confirmed that North Dakota State men's basketball coach David Richmond will be in studio on Thursday morning I believe at 9:30 Thursday morning we had to do a lot of Heming and ha here and we made it work now he has said repeatedly he wants to sit here in the big chair uh I would graciously take that if he wants me over there him ask the questions I do have a few I'd like to ask but uh he will be with us coming up on Thursday I don't know if we're going to move mustard pants Friday to Thursday we're contemplating that now knowing how much he has affinity for uh that so just want to let people know all right with that let's go and I don't know if I get if we want to show the twins because this may be the perfect time for them not to be on television locally because of how they have played in the last week ain't so good they have not won since a week ago Sunday when they won in Toronto last night against the Nationals and Washington mind you is not good Pablo Lopez got torched that ball for Luis Garcia was hammered for a two-run home run it's a 2-1 game Jesse Winker goes to the opposite field makes it a 3-1 natal's lead it's now 6-1 in the fifth inning Garcia does it again to drive it another run they made it a 71 Washington Lee this was the brightest of bright spots for the twins last night was Carlos kareah crushing that I've been to Nationals Park that is a long way to hit that home run 428 ft made it a 73 score they added on though to the Nets this is typifies the night it's 83 throw here gets by Miranda two runs are going to come in to score just you're throwing the ball all over the place it's 10 to three not a good play by Vasquez then to add insult to injury that was Eddie Rosario by the way who came around to score the second run there on the ball that was thrown down the left field line I mean we've seen we've definitely seen better defense Rosario comes up it's 10 to three and decides to smack a base hit to right that would score two why can't the twins get players like him the Nationals roll 12-3 the final score to give the twins a seventh consecutive loss Lopez was especially not great five innings eight hits seven runs CSD go up to 4.72 on the season twins did manage eight hits but again they're not scoring any more than three runs at a game going right back to what their issue was to start the season they can't score or they scored one run against the Yankees what did they scored five runs against the Guardians they got three last night against a Nationals team that came in five games under 500 before last night's game and they hadn't won as you see in the graphic they had lost five in a row heading into last night's game now the twins are just a game over 500 and have fallen six and a half back of Cleveland it just it's ugly again if you can't see him maybe you're maybe it's not the worst thing in the world that the twins aren't available locally on television right now by the way I am 10 days out from being on my prediction and I think we're going to get there unfortunately for the viewers at home I think we're going to get to June 1 on the Bal and Comcast debacle with them uh unavailable on television game two tonight 5 30 back in DC Joe Ryan will go Patrick Corbin Central New York native will go for Washington the left-hander you see a mark of one and four erra over five and a half and the twins at least get one see if they can snap this losing skid before they have a day game tomorrow and then it's the Texas Rangers coming into town on Friday they did announce the twins did on Friday's game which I believe our colleague Mike mcy who's uh going to be here in about 20 minutes is going to they move the start time up on Friday to about 6:10 to accommodate the Timberwolves game two starting at uh at 7 o'clock or 7:30 I think it's 7:30 on Friday night because there's going to be a ton of people in a small area in Downtown Minneapolis so if you are going to the game know this Friday night's game with Texas is starting an hour earlier at uh 6:00 real quick before we wrap up our opening segment the conclusion of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs happened last night we had game seven in Vancouver Edmonton and the Canucks the Oilers had won game six to get us to a game seven the winner to get the Dallas Stars this is the last piece of the NHL final four it was a great atmosphere if you love hockey you got treated to a dynamite atmosphere be last night and the Oilers came out flying Cody CeCe blasts home this go that is outside the rink at Edmonton that's how crazy the oiler fans are that made it a one ZIP Oiler lead early in the second period they'd add on to it I watch this one live this is a pretty goal from Zack Heyman who's been tremendous this is 11th goal of the playoffs for the oiler Stand Out watch this deflection that has just got a piece of it to make make it a 29 that's inside the Edmonton Arena they love their hockey they're passionate about it they would add on to it Riot n Hopkins will score on the rebound on a power play goal it's three nothing Oilers after two periods this game is over you would think that's a great roof shot there but the Canucks had a rally it's still three nothing Conor Garland will take this Puck away he'll shoot and score that makes it a 3-1 game gives the Canucks a little bit of life now under five minutes to go Philip ronik will score now look out it's game on now it's three to2 and it's going crazy in Vancouver and Rogers Arena here now the ERS take a timeout remember we only get one a game in hockey Vancouver pulls its goal tender they get a couple chances down low on Sha Skinner the Oilers goal tender but he made a couple of great saves they had a one deflection to get the Puck out of the zone and the clock would run out on Vancouver who had to play without Brock besser last night former UND stand out out with an undisclosed injury and the Edmonton Oilers are moving on to the Western Conference Finals they won game six and game seven 3-2 the final score the Oilers remember they fired their coach right around thanks Evington was predicted to be a really good team and remember they had this streak where they I think they won was it 16 games in a row during the part of the season and so the Oilers are moving on and they will get the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals that will begin Thursday night Dallas has the home ice in that the Eastern Conference Finals will begin tomorrow night between the Panthers and the Rangers remember the Stanley Cup Final airs on wda we've got that this year that'll begin in about three weeks and you've got some interesting matchups here Panthers of course remember went to the final last year they lost to Vegas the Rangers have not won the Stanley Cup in 30 years as a hockey nerd that I am 1994 might have been the greatest hockey postseason of all time uh when the Rangers beat the devils in seven games and then beat the Canucks in seven uh a Rangers Oilers final will be awfully entertaining Dallas made the Cup Final in the bubble I want to say they lost that that year to Tampa they have not won the Stanley Cup since 1999 the orders haven't won it since 1990 and the Panthers have never won the Stanley Cup so those are the four remaining buying for Lord Stanley's cup we got a pack show coming up for you today we got a lot to get to as I mentioned Mike mcf be with us at 9:35 and his usual time slot we got lots to decipher on the NCA versus house deel and how it directly affects the schools uh in our coverage area cuz it does and the conferences uh those schools play in that's coming up at 9:35 at 10:00 G's back with us Justin Guard from kfam in the Twin Cities who has been in Denver for game five and game seven uh just back and uh getting ready for game one we'll preview wolves Mavs coming up at 10 o'clock I mentioned Tim POC is scheduled to join us at 10:20 on the road as the bison are now 100 days out from the season opener against Colorado and at 10:35 Morehead native and Indie ISU freshman Summit League champion Michael hgo will join us as he is on his way to Austin excuse me now Arkansas fville Arkansas and the NCA West regionals to compete there in the long jump he won the long jump at the summit League championships a couple weeks ago now he's got a chance to make Eugene and the NCA championships as a freshman we'll visit with him coming up at 10:35 so a lot to get to here on this Tuesday morning we'll come back Mayville State and Valley City State have a new conference home we'll get into the frontier conference joining those two teams and much more hot mik just starting here on wdy extra KFL TV and inforum.com welcome back everybody poll question is up here at hot Mike wda in reflection of today beginning the 100 day countdown can't wait or don't wish summer away I have a feeling I think I know where our poll question will go feel free and vote at hot Mike wda y on Twitter email comes in from our opening segment Dom you've declared for some time now certain mustard pants days but we've actually never seen you in them on those days as you remain conspicuously seated at your desk I guess we just have to assume you aren't sitting there in plaid shorts definitely not in plaid shorts um I've shown them off and believe me around the station people have seen nobody's really a fan here either I'm going to be honest with certainly not at home no one's a fan I think my wife has exactly used the term burn them has been uh accurate if you think of the Nashville Predators jerseys they're similar in that um later this week I promise uh appreciate the email on that um all right let's get to the one of the two major stories of the day and this will become official at about 2:00 this afternoon that Valley City State Mayville State Dakota state are going to have a new conference home the frontier conference will be inviting the Vikings and the comets and a host of other schools including Dickenson State who had already signed off ongoing uh to join the League beginning in 2025 and 26 you'll remember that the Northstar Athletic Association which the league that uh those schools are currently in is dissolving it's probably the best way to describe what's happening there in light of the fact with uh Jamestown of course moving on to its status is moving from Ni to a division two school now to give you an idea the frontier is made up of schools that reside in Montana Idaho and Oregon it's all over the place but the addition of the schools that are coming in and Eric Peterson and Mike bely have been reporting on this that with Valley Mayville Dickinson bellw and Dakota state they're going to be uh joining in the frontier has six full-time members Carol College which many of those schools play in the playoffs Montana State Northern Montana Tech Montana Western uh the University of Providence they do not sponsor football and Rocky Mountain College all of those are in Montana and remember we had um Dennis Mulla talked to us about that because I asked him about travel and he said well some of these uh just don't uh play football half of them are private schools as well Carol college is in Helena uh Montana State University northern's in h uh Montana Tech is in but Montana Western's in Dylan the University of providence is in Great Falls and Rocky Mountain College is in Billings now there are football only Affiliates as well Arizona Christian the College of Idaho Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon but with Dickinson maville Dakota State and bellw coming out bellw doesn't play football um they figure they can have divisions to ease up on travel which makes complete sense there because for these schools they can't be afford going you know three or four times to Montana now it may mean they double up which heck frankly happens right now where two teams play multiple times during the season but this is a a necessary move with what uh you got to have a league as our good friend Mike zir said on Twitter last night you gotta have a conference and the Northstar is going away after this upcoming year 24 25 and you just you got to have a place to play you can't go you're not Notre Dame you can't go the independent route and that's the only way that basically make this work now I know through various reporting on this that Valley City looked into possible NCA membership I'm not sure that went far knowing the expenses that are associated with it granted I know that we just talked about it they're getting the $5 million indoor facility that uh will be built starting they believe this fall that uh the groundwork will be uh broken on that but this is in the big picture scheme of things the best option for them they had no option frankly that the best way to do this was to stay together and move now it was brought up that the frontier doesn't play uh doesn't sponsor baseball or softball and that's something we'll dive into I think more tomorrow and I'm sure we'll get a question about that during the the formal press conference today about the addition of these schools but that that's something where you can if you have enough you can maybe start up yourself because those schools all do that I am intrigued Beyond football basketball Mayville State specifically the women have dominated the Northstar curious to see how that transition goes to a new league Dickinson has had unreal success in football in the Northstar does that translate into the frontier that will and how's scheduling going to work all of the all of the question question that you would normally associate with moving into a new league um will be presented today but this will become official uh later today and again I think Eric you brought up the map you can go ahead and do that again this is what the um the map looks like now now Dickinson was a member and I remember when this happened for two years 201 uh 12 to 2014 they were a member of the frontier and the travel was just crazy and they decided to uh to leave and and they came back into the Northstar on that you look at uh football on this everybody knows Carol College they won uh the Nei National Championship six times four in a row from 2002 to 2005 they also won it in 07 in 2010 Southern Oregon won the ni national championship in 2014 so they've got uh some powerhouses uh in that league in basketball Montana Western won the neia National Championship in division one women's basketball in 2019 not that long ago so they they got some teams that can play and that's what you want you want to go into a league that has good competition that's going to provide you with challenges you don't want to go in and just curb stomp everybody there's no fun in that and uh that's not going to be the case so the league will expand and then I'm curious if they're going to make division something I've always been a fan of granted now in the in the upper division div they're all going away FBS eliminated divisions in the Big 10 SEC uh ACC they're all gone now uh I think divisions actually are more advantageous if you're going to play a championship game at the end of the season specifically in football on that just it eliminates the guesswork of how good a team is if you're not playing you know half the other team team in your league then okay this team was this good and said division um we'll find out how good they are if they play The Champ of the other that's just my my two cents on that but again press conference is coming up 2 o'clock uh later today with uh the frontier uh conference uh commissioner uh Dr Scott Crawford will be addressing the media at 2 o'clock today we'll have more coverage on that coming up on our news tonight at 6 and at 10: and of course we'll have more tomorrow on hot Mike because of the direct effect of uh the schools here in our viewing area from Dickinson Mayville and Valley City about what's going on and where things go from here so I'm intrigued we'll see what happens on that but that's coming up tomorrow uh on the show and we'll uh we'll see I I am intrigued about travel I'm intrigued about opponents and how much you're going to play those other schools the far away schools that are affiliate members only in footall football do they play a couple of crossover games frankly I'm not a big fan of playing a team twice during the season in college it's one thing in the pros because you have divisions there um I think more often than night the college kids would like to hey can we play eight or nine different teams and not playing the same team uh twice and we're doing that three or four times over but money is the bottom line on that and uh it's going to it cost a lot of money to travel to those spots more on that coming up later today we'll break we come back the landmark court case that's about to be settled by the NCAA it's going to affect Summit League teams Big Sky teams Missouri Valley teams everybody specifically the smaller schools we'll get into that with our guy Mike MC's on the other side of the break we come back on a Tuesday Morning Edition of hot Mike oh it's Mr mcing I have seen the future he was wearing number five and I ain't talking about Robbie Grimley folks took out the muffins took out the trail mix took out the cookies they stole the monster cookies wow that's awesome that is so awesome let's do some broadcasting we will do some broadcasting we got an email waiting for you out of the shoot will the Tip Sheet be rooting for the Timberwolves in the NBA Finals if they get there even though the tip sheet said the Boston Celtics will win the NBA championship so this is a huge thank you for the question by the way um very insightful question yes and it's a huge issue in our house gonna say this is because percolating here in my house you might want to have her on as a guest if this happens because she would it would be good my wife is a huge and lifelong Boston Celtics fan and she grew up on a very isolated Farm in Western Minnesota and her dad bought one of those big old huge satellite dishes back in the day that you know was on on the concrete slab wow you know that's awesome and they could get all this that's before there was any rules or just the what so they could get all the games and they got all the Celtics games off the satellite and they were the Raw Feed wow um and so there was no commercials and it was you could hear Tommy Hinson and Mike Gorman like talking off a and stuff which and so she became a huge Boston Celtics fan because she's a few years younger she's a lot of years younger than I am and so she was a young girl when Larry Bird you know Robert Parish the whole that that whole dynasty was so lifelong Celtics fan she watches every Celtics game every Celtics not half of them not once a week I don't want to say I I set up a trip for her and Emma in January to go to Boston to go to a Celtics game at TD Garden against the timber wol against the Wolves against the woles and it was a fantastic game but that's how big of a fan my wife is okay uh she wore her Celtic satin starter jacket and got like like she said some dude outside the the garden when they're walking around the day before the game looks at and goes that code is legit that's awesome oh just fantastic great so but she's also a lifelong Minnesotan yep and so she's obviously a twins Vikings Tim rules Gophers fan um also a huge bisen rube as well but that's again she she likes teams she likes Sports so she's already saying well what am I going to do because she goes the Celtics are going to get there the wolves are going to get there and that's going to be the Celtics against the Wolves for the NBA Championship she goes I don't know what I'm gonna do I I mean it's she's like I I'm I'm and she's totally like tore up about it yeah she's like I don't know what because I mean on one hand it's the team that I've rooted for for my entire life and it's the Boston Celtics and she goes on the other hand I'm a Minnesotan and it's the Timberwolves and Anthony Edward is awesome he's fantastic he goes I don't I don't know what to do I'm stressing out and I'm always helpful and I I'm sure you are yeah I'm sure by the way speaking of those two teams Kevin Garnett said on Stephen A Smith's show yesterday that he is going to attend at least one of the Western Conference Final games in Minneapolis which is unbelievable considering he and Glen Taylor despise one another yes there is a there's a deep Rift if he's there on on uh Friday night when you're in Minneapolis by the way at the Twins game they the roof may come off Target Center if he's there can you zoom in on this is there a zoom on one of these cameras yeah they can do that this is my wife and daughter at TD Garden whoops there you go there you go it'll focus it'll [Music] focus look at that that's fantastic it's my wife and daughter in TD Garden with her with their original 198 Celtic satin starter jacket just fantastic what do we make of this series are the Wolves going to get through Dallas yes yeah yep I think so I I think they cut a break when when they Dallas beat OKC I know that I love watching Luca donic play I've watch again I watch a lot of NBA basketball does he complain more than anybody else though yes dones is always in the ref here always there always always which I don't like I love watching him play I love watching him play but donic is he's something else but Kyrie Irving is a flat Earth weirdo right but he's playing but he's playing a high level of basketball uh the wols defense if they can get that locked in I I think they're probably better defensively than Dallas although Dallas has got much better in that area and it's going to be a challenge but uh I think the wolves are going to Prevail in this and they got the home court advantage as well and I mentioned you're going to be at the Twins game on Friday night so it moved up the start time by the way just so you know like a couple of months ago when the Twins tickets went on sale our daughter is like a big star Wars fan and I went to the Star Wars night last year just out of happen stands it just sort of happened I was there and I saw the the postgame drone show and they the whole game is Star Wars themed and it's fantastic and so my daughter when I told her about she goes I'd like to go to that so I bought tickets this year for the Friday night game this week which is Star Wars night and then the Wolves win and they announced that the Wolves game game two is also Friday night a block away at Target Center and and they were going to both start at 7 o' right and and again my wife incredibly intelligent along with great Beauty says well that's going to just be an absolute mad house song show y being from a farm in Western North Dakota she did not use the phrase mad house it was a different word that ends in show um different phrase ends in show and I said yes it is and it is going to be a blast it is going to be an absolute blast a weekend too yes yes and I assume that when we're at the Twins game that they're going to do updates I I wouldn't be surprised if they were playing the G like during in between Innings if they were playing the game on the on the big screen gosh it's GNA be awesome it's GNA be just and so la Okay so yesterday I said well what if we could get wolves tickets that'd be okay yeah I said we could kind of go to the Twins game for the first part and then go over to the Wolves game and then if we want to leave to see the post game yep and my wife was like well the tickets for the wolves are going to be like 500 a piece I she we're not going to drop 1500 bucks on wolves tickets are we and I'm like once in a lifetime well rephrase that when it's Wolves Celtics in game three of the NBA Finals the target set right y yeah right I'll go so a a $155,000 trip to Boston to to to see the not the previous one but if it was the wolf Celtics in the finals oh let's go yep yeah and by the way the other thing we're going to do lots of big plans to house Celtics Knicks at Madison Square Garden next year yeah that's I've been again I watch a lot of NBA basketball MSG is awesome yeah you got to do it I've never our daughter's been there for a concert but whatever um you gota it's I just like I go I'm like oh I I love New York City not a Knicks fan but it's but it's m again most famous arena when my daughter and I went to New York back in December she's not a hockey fan and not necessarily a basketball fan but she's like looking up on her phone oh the Nicks through out of town when we're going to be there I'm like what are you looking up Nicks games she goes I want to go see a game at Madison Square Garden it's Madison Square Garden Dad it's like okay so she's looking up Rangers games what's the hockey team's name oh yeah the Rangers oh they're out of town too she going okay I'll go to love it it's fantastic I think I raised her right I I think we raised her right you did a nice job she loves the big events she understands the she loved the Celtics game at the at the Garden she thought that was the greatest thing ever was a heck of a I mean it was an overtime game both wolves Celtics games went OT sources say my 23-year-old daughter who doesn't really care about the Celtics or the NBA was chanting MVP when Jason Tatum was at the free throw line and the rest of the crowd at TD Gard MVP yep all right we got about 15 minutes here I it's not nearly enough time to discuss what the huge change that's going to happen this week in the NCA I'm not you had your podcast you had Ben Port o who covers for the sports Business Journal um to do basically a 101 class on what's going on but last night apparently the NCA signed off on the settlement that's going to screw over smaller School the original sett that by the way the NCAA and the power five came up with at the exclusion of everybody else they in secret behind closed doors that didn't even tell anybody what they were doing the details of it so then Val arrian the commissioner of the Big East one of the other 27 conferences yeah they're on the outside of this yep um came up at least she fronted it a counter proposal saying well wait a second here um and the numbers are all numbers but instead of the the small conferences like the summit League paying 60% paying 60% of the settlement and the power five paying 40% of it and the NCAA why don't we flip those numbers around which would make sense and so shockingly the NCAA and the and the power five League said well no why would we want to do that we're going to do that no sorry Summit League sorry Horizon sorry Big Sky so the Money Mike where for people that don't understand this where's the money coming from for the school like North Dakota State the summit League UND where are they got to get that money to pay this back that the the NCAA pays out to the smaller conferences things like the NCAA basketball shares the units they get the units there's also I learned yesterday I didn't know this but there's the NCAA also pays out like four or five other things to the conferences and to like discretionary fund can I like it's like like Grant the grants um there's some academic money that goes out there's there's different piles of money that the NCAA earmarks um to these other conferences every year and so the example that Ben Porton I used was so just as a round number let's say right now the NCAA is paying the summit League $5 million in these other funds to help them pay certain bills excuse me that money to pay off the settlement would come out of those funds the NCAA would say well in instead of giving you $5 million this year Summit League we're going to give you 3 million and keep 2 million so that we can pay off something that we screwed up along with the power five leagues the leagues like the summit League are incredibly not sure I can use this word on TV but I will pissed off is the word that was thrown at me yesterday by somebody connected to the summit League they said we are pissed off and we're used to getting punched in the face by these by the power five by the NCAA always that we're we're really not at the same level as them in division one unless they need us to be otherwise they ignore us and that they just don't care about us and they're willing to to rake us over the coals but then when they need us and they need our money then they're then we're equals division one then we're division one and so we're just they were not involved in these negotiations they didn't know they were coming they found out the the settlement that's we did right yeah they found out the same way that John Q found out about it and so there's and there's not much they can do about it I mean they're they're just they're just the small guys yeah but so that money would come from those piles and that money I was told yesterday for most of these schools that's baked into the budgets because they know it's coming it's like if I got a if uh what if if I got a Bonus if I was Clark Griswald and I got a Christmas bonus B every year for $10,000 I budget that into my my family budget cuz I know it's coming every year so these schools in the summit league for example know this $5 million is coming every year so they budget for it and now the NCA is saying ah it's only going to be 3 million yeah for the next 10 years and the other schools still are going to have to come up with that money too the individual schools are going to have to do that uh to pay it back let's break we'll get more on this as well because it's it's convoluted but it's important to understand what's happening cuz it's coming down sometime this week back with Mike we wrap up hour one right after this welcome back everybody Ross delinger who works for Yahoo's done a great job on reporting on this the D1 board of directors will meet this week to potentially approve the nca's framework on payment of the 2.7 billion with a B in back let's let me interrupt here Y and I asked Ben pornoy this this is a settle this is a negotiated settlement between the NCAA and this class action lawsuit of former athletes who who believe that they got they're asking for back pay basically for nil for nil because they said when we played the NCAA with their archaic rules wouldn't allow us to get paid for our name image and likeness now athletes can do that the NCAA is has said that's okay so we want back pay and there's a swimmer from Arizona State Nam Grant house he's the one that started the original lawsuit saying I want some y some Jing here um he's GNA get it yeah other others tagged along the Ana and the power fives know that they're going to lose because they never win in court because it's just a they haven't they haven't antiquated Monopoly is what it is they're going to lose every court case every antitrust case they're going to lose so I if Grant house and those folks they believe that they were going to win $20 billion if it went to court and the judge ruled against the NCA NCAA and the power five 20 billion yeah they'd have to declare bankruptcy right so the yes so the NCAA and the power five went oh well that's a lot of money that we can't afford so let's settle it out of court and then we'll negotiate that number way down and oh by the way we're not going to pay most of it because we're going to make the summit league and the Big Sky and the Missouri Valley Conference pay the Lion Share of it because number one and I said this to Ben yesterday number one the power five schools all they care about all they care about they care about nothing else so don't even pretend all they care about is money and making the most money they can y that's all they care about I don't know if I'm being clear on this that's all they care about is the money they could not care less about the athletes about the other 27 conferences they don't care about each other no the SEC does not care about the Big 12 no at all we've SE we saw that in the payouts for the college football playoffs all the big boys care about is maximizing their money y so that's why they settled the NCAA all they care about is their jobs correct and their existence that's all they care about that's it they don't they don't care about the athletes they don't care about the media they don't care about the members and they sure as heck don't care about North Dakota State or South Dakota state or Montana do not care all they care about is the massive whatever 3 employees in Indianapolis with a beautiful office building in Downtown Indianapolis and they all have nice salaries and they want to keep their jobs because they know that they're Antiquated and that they're on their way out if they don't protect their own butts period period that's it yeah that's it yep it's well said so so for the rest of the NCAA including the athletes including form Communications which holds local media rights to an NCAA or School the the the summit League Schools they're on their own correct the summit League schools are on their own they have to negotiate and figure out or navigate rather how they're going to best make this work and how to survive the best they can and hope that whenever this all ends and the power five breaks away into quasi professional sports which it already is anyway and then there's whatever's left of the rest of the schools the North Dakota states have to figure out where do we fit in and how does this go forward and who's going to govern us and what are the rules and that's the part that is is going to matter here do you think I'm curious does this mean elimination of certain Sports at schools did that come to that it's that's possible it's been talked about that that they might how they gonna make us up I don't know where you're getting us money there might be a a even a change in the minimum number of sports that you need to be division one like I think I think right now it's 15 Sports I believe right you have to sponsor 15 Sports to be division one uh maybe it goes down to eight wow maybe it goes down to 10 and then you then you then you get rid of whatever I'm just and I don't know this I'm just I'm just saying this don't you get rid of wrestling you get rid of men's golf you get rid of women's golf track you get rid of Men's Track and and again because of Title 9 as it stands now and who knows what that future holds because you know it's just politics are politics and the Supreme Court is the Supreme Court if Title 9 gets struck down then all bets are off but if Title 9 is there men's sports men's Olympic sports are just going to be devastated because you can't you can't hack women's sports or get rid of them because Title Nine what an absolute I because I look at school like Western Illinois how are they gonna pay $200,000 a year how does that work that's what I said yesterday there's no way they could do that is you and I have had the Good Fortune of traveling all over country to see these other mid- major schools um we've seen The Montanas which is wow that's impressive yep we've seen James madis I've been there it's like woo this is a feels like big time y Fargo and and North Dakota state are in a pretty good spot because they I mean they raise most of their own money anyway they get no help from the legislature virtually um and they have the facilities they have the the support they have a little bit of local broadcast money that actually a nice chunk of local broadcast money that comes in so they they'll NSU will be okay but you and I have been to Western Illinois we've been to Indiana State you know we've been to Mississippi Valley State I've been there then to Sam Houston Sam Houston and everybody we've been to Eastern Washington yep and everybody thinks those school oh Sam Houston no nope Sam Houston was not an impressive place I look at Missouri State now that just did this jump well I had this question asked of me yesterday though so is Missouri State are they Geniuses because of what they did or are they idiots because of what they did and you know they went to FBS and paid the $5 million fee to get out of FCS but are they Geniuses or idiots and I told the person I was talking to I said I you know where I fall I be there I think they're Geniuses because they controlled their own faith right wow it's a lot it's a lot to wrap your mind around but for people watching we got a roll here it's it's coming it could happen tomorrow or maybe like thday it it has to happen by by Thursday I think Thursday is the deadline right so it's coming and then the repercussions of that are going to be real interesting to see what and we'll see I mean you know you and I seem to get dramatic sometimes but this is I mean I mean every everyone's everybody everybody is like whoa this is like a big deal we'll see great to see you man thanks for coming by enjoy Star Wars so when you're coaching t-ball are you more like the Walter mathau character Bad News Bears or the Vic Morrow character in Bad News Bears are you butter maker or are you the are you Vic Morrow I com can I be a combo no this is a black and white world no no grayers proba Vic moral probably more than anything so I would say I'm more of that than anything so okay cuz butter maker was like the he was like the premier youth baseball coach of all time right drinking the beer I think Miller lights he was drinking and it was fantastic I was just wanted to make sure he ran the right way around the Bas he did that so we got we got one goal down now it's on night two tomorrow so I'm bumped about that good to see you man thanks for coming by Mike weely joining us here in studio we'll take a break we come back we'll start our second hour Justin guard will join us from kfn and the Twin Cities as the wolves get ready for Dallas and the Western Conference Finals hour two coming up after this this is hot Mike hot Mike on the networks of wda wda here's Dom is [Music] welcome back everybody our two on a busy Tuesday Morning n isue head football coach Tim Palace going to join us at about 15 minutes from the Missouri Valley Football Conference meetings yes I know it's 100 days out from the uh football season but basketball season is still happening up here the Timberwolves will play game one of the Western Conference Finals at Target Center tomorrow night as they'll take on the Dallas Mavericks uh our guy who's been covering the Wolves all all over the place was in Denver for both game five and game seven on team no sleep and he joins us this morning Justin Guard from KFAN radio in uh in the Twin Cities producer of the bumper to bumper show uh joins us also gopher sideline reporter I hate to wish the summer away on you that were 100 days out from the gulfer opener with North Carolina guardy how you doing bud I'm doing well yeah it is crazy actually I was trying to you mentioned Missouri Valley Conference meetings I was I'm trying to figure out travel to Big 10 football media days in July like that pops up up and I don't do you know now that the Big 10 has 50 teams it's basically like a two-e process so I'm just going to go in for the Gopher day I think um I don't need to be spending you know five days in Indianapolis so that's that's how we're rolling all right so you were there in Denver give us the field after Edwards makes the three to make it a 10-point lead with three minutes to go give me the vibe inside the arena stunned Silence from the Denver Nuggets uh complete Elation from the Wolves fans that were there I think Alex Rodriguez probably actually went out onto the court at that point like if you watch that back and I've watched it like 52 times with my nine-year-old specifically um A-Rod essentially is right next to to Anthony when he makes that three and he's going crazy and that was that was the moment I think he picked a good moment Dom where as I was there in the Press Box I'm thinking wow they actually are probably going to pull this off like out of nowhere they just chipped away and chipped away and fought and did and battled and all the cliches and when that you know Nas dunk turned into the Conley steel which turned into the ant three three minutes left and the wolves are up 10 and you're thinking wow this is actually happening it's pretty stunning and so stunning is the word remarkable is the word to knock out the defending champs in game seven on their home floor to have to come back in game six and and obviously save your season and then go out there to Denver um wild times man as we were talking before we went on the air wild times that don't come around very often so hopefully everybody's enjoying it I want to go back earlier than that gy the the Rudy shot I know the guys afterwards with Aunt and Cat both said like we knew we had had it just yep that I watching it live and when he shot I'm like well go here we go and it went in like I still we're watching the replay now like it was almost destined that he made that they weren't going to lose yeah I compared it on the Power Trip Morning Show yesterday when I was flying home to when Jamal Murray made that 55f footer in game three at the half like he just kind of felt like it wasn't going to be Minnesota's night at that point with the way they finished the second quarter a Rudy goar 15 foot fall away is the equ if you're doing the conversion chart for Jamal Murray and Rudy goar 15-footer and that one I I'm so stupid like I didn't realize that they reset the shot clock to 4.6 which it should have been um because originally they' reset it to 14 which was not the right call so I'm thinking why is Rudy in such a rush me being so dumb and but good good heads up play by him and yeah when that falls like you gotta you got to feel like okay maybe this is actually in the basketball Gods cards here for the Wolves tonight and he played great the fory obvious poing seems sing day is aend he should be in the league or whether he should be in the Hall of Fame there's like no middle ground with Rudy but the guy's just a good guy that works hard wants to win wants to be a good teammate and knows his own limitations obviously like they all do and it's cool to see a guy like that rewarded in my opinion well it's also especially here on this show where I've done it like we litigate that trade almost every and now it seems like it was the best trade ever where this time last year like uh I don't know if that worked and now it seemed like can I know you tweeted out can we trade more picks to Utah for the goar deal yeah that that is and litigating that trade is is exactly what people try to do every single day it's like and I and I even go back to that July you know how stunning that was and certainly all the compensation was stunning but you look around like that's what people send for good players and you followed the team for a long time I've followed the team for a long time I don't remember like an endless line of free agents lining up to come to Minnesota you know even to play with Kevin Garnett we were just talking about Michael Finley you know with the Dallas Mavericks front office and I remember I'm old enough to remember Garnett flying down personally to try to recruit Michael Finley who wasn't like Dwayne Wade or Kobe Bryan a good solid player and Michael's like yeah no I'm not coming to Minnesota like it's just so to you had to do something drastic and after all of the the content I consumed that week because I was in the middle of Minnesota and an RV everybody assumed well they'll he'll make them really good then they'll probably be a top four and then we'll see what happens in the playoffs it's like that's exactly what has happened they were the best team in the in the west pretty much all year now they're in the Western Conference Finals he's completely shifted their defensive bit like they should give Utah a few more picks I mean if they win a championship even now I'd say it's worth it um but I just don't like how we have to you know basically go over it over and even people that are still anti- Rudy trade it's like well they still gave up too much I'm like really they're in the Western Conference finals for the second time of all time I'm 41 years old I was seven when the team came here this is the second time that they've been this far I think it was probably worth the compensation what do we make of uh kg saying to Stephen A Smith that he's going to try and get to a Wolves game in many I was stunned because I know him and Glenn is that gonna happen what do you what are you the chance of this happening well I mean if if kg says it I mean he's ultimately in assuming they're going to let him in if he wants to come right I mean he's he's the one that controls all of that like it's not like the wolves have said no Kevin you'd rather you not um I can't even I saw that last night I saw somebody tweet about like wait who said this where like and that sent me down a rabbit hole for like an hour to find it and I'm like wow that would be something and because everybody misses him obviously I mean every single time the Wolves win a game and he says something about it I mean you should see his mentions it's kg get back here we need you back here don't wor you don't have to sit by Glen Taylor just go somewhere else you can sit by Alex and Mark if you want to you can go sit in the crowd sit in a suite wherever you want to go I can't even I I just know The Ovations like when he came back the last time to play with flip when he came back as a Boston Celtic I was there for that night and obviously I mean he's the most beloved player in franchise history and has done a great you know everybody would love it everybody would love it so hopefully that does happen because that would take the energy to an even complet my gosh they would rip the roof off that place if he's there like I they've done it you you I know you were talking about this with Dan where they've brought back like googly a was there for game mean they're bringing J.R Ryder was there I saw that like oh my gosh interesting choice interesting choice when you're trying to save your season that Jr was the guy yeah Mitchell's been invited who Richardson was back like they've done a good job and you see it I mean you saw it in New York like Marberry was there John Starks was there I I like that it's good it's going to be interesting though because now guys play for so many different teams like you can be welcomed everywhere even Garnett mentioned he's like a wolf Celtics finals would be amazing I would just sit at half court and cheer for both of them and whoever won I'd go in that locker room like I can I can do both well before we get the cart for the horse tell us about the match up with Dallas with all the four games happened I was it before the trade line do we have an accurate so do we have an accurate depiction of what the Mavericks are now is what they saw during the regular season no there's nothing really similar Kye yeah you're right that the all four games were played before the trade deadline and a lot of people thought Dallas really got better after the trade deadline they added a couple of pieces they added some good Defenders and so they're a completely different team I don't have don't quote me directly but I'm I'm pretty sure Kyrie missed three of the games that the Wolves played I think Luca missed one so yeah there's really for people that just look at it say the Wolves won three out of these four that's great um I don't think that matters one bit I think it's going to be a great series I think it's going to be a fun series I me to think about Anthony Edwards guarding Kyrie which he's already said Jaden McDaniels is probably going to be on Luca and obviously Dallas has to deal with what the wolves are dealing with so it's going to be crazy it's going to be wild it's um obviously rare and the fact that there are four teams still left in this thing that can win an NBA championship and the wolves are one of them um it doesn't get much better than that I'm interested about who guards Luca that if he's already if a said he's taking Kyrie who's pick is Jaden McDaniels then on LCA yeah I think that's what happens I mean I think that's what starts but like just like with Joker I mean I don't think you're just gonna throw one guy on him and and he's so unique and he's so different and just like Joker is you know there's just so much talent and there's so much so many things that they can do and then by the way you got to deal with the Kyrie factor of it too who's playing probably about as well as he has in his career and so it's going to be there's a lot of different and the cool thing is now I think we have I think as fans and as people that watch it like you know how the es and the flows go now like there's going to be you know by the end of game seven like you're talking to people go what do you think you go I could see anything I I could see literally any outcome tonight would not surprise me given how sporadic every it's just whoever plays better on those given nights uh you think all these matchups matter you think all these tweaks matter and you know Jamal Murray couldn't miss in the first half couldn't find the couldn't find the hoop in the second half there's the difference you right and Anthony was basically the opposite it's just that's just how it goes sometimes I'm intrigued gy before I let you go here just the the vibe of downtown Minneapolis Friday night the twins are playing at six game two is happening what's that going to be like on Friday yeah busy it's been I mean downtown has already been wild obviously you know really this whole season and we were talking you know this this Timberwolves fan base even a couple of years ago you know when they first made the playoffs when they beat the Clippers to go into the playin game like Midway through that year Target Center really became like a fun environment the fan basee is very young they're there to party they're there to watch Anthony Edwards dunk they're there to watch Rudy black shots and that is only continued like when Chris Finch said after game seven the city is behind this team he's 100% right I mean the ticket demand for game three I think of the Denver series was ridiculous um you can imagine what it is now like if you go to timberwolves.com right now there are no more tickets left you'll be paying high resale value um and so it's it's going to be crazy it's going to be wild and to have basketball in May when you can walk around in shorts and a t-shirt around here is is I mean I remember it growing up vaguely um and I remember 2004 obviously it's just um it's a special time it's a special time and everybody's kind of embracing it which is very cool is the referendum on cat dun for how he played especially in game seven I know how polarizing he's been I mentioned this on the show yesterday that was was that his best game as a wolf that we saw on on Sunday night probably but you could also stack it up with like three or four different games in this postseason he's been yeah it yeah you're right about him being polaro polarizing and and I I wasn't a huge cat fan early on when he was you know 18 1920 we brought up Garnett he was he would talk about you know I think I've got some Garnett in me I'm like slow down like you don't just throw that around there's a lot that goes into that and but you look at it I mean if you just look at his whole resume of being here through all the stuff that he has been and he's talked about it and you all the coaching changes all the tragedies all the dysfunction all that stuff the Jimmy Butler stuff The Tib stuff and he's just kind of gone about his business and I think obviously grown up a lot and now he's doing whatever the team wants him to do I mean it's I'll guard Kevin Durant I'll guard Joker if you need me to hey by the way when you need me to save the game because no one else has showed up I'll keep it within 10 or 15 points which he did in game seven um we talked about feeling good for a guy like Rudy you got to feel good for a guy like cat too Who Bore the brunt of a lot of criticism for the first handful of years and now I think he's got the perfect Superstar to to be the robin to and Anthony Edwards a guy who maybe is the best teammate in the NBA I'm I this is what I'm doing Dom I'm literally showing my son how Anthony Edwards pumps up everybody around him I'm like this is maybe the best player in the NBA right now and all he's talking about is other people like and protects cat when he needs it pumps cat up when he needs it same with all the players like it's just been a really good match and so yeah Carl was tremendous and for those you know when they when they were winning down the stretch of the Season people wondering well should they be thinking about trading Carl are they better without him like I was just screaming are you nuts no like you need a guy like him because if you need a bucket he can get it for you if you need him to guard somebody now he can do that too and he's a great rebounder and also a good teammate so yeah he's he had a great series and hopefully it continues you're the man I know you're on no sleep I really appreciate the time have a ball this week and uh we'll do this again soon okay yep you know how to find me thanks Dom thanks JG there he goes Justin guard KFAN down in the Twin Cities Wolves and the Mavericks coming up gave one tomorrow night at Target Center at 7:30 we'll break we got a special guest on the other side of the break NDSU head football coach Tim POC will join us on the road the buison are 100 days out from the season opener in Colorado he'll join us chat about that when hot Mike returns we're back right after this welcome back everybody hot Mike rolls on on this Tuesday morning more at Native bisen freshman Sprinter Michael Hao will join us at about 15 minutes from fville Arkansas he's competing in the NCA West regionals in the long jump he won the summit League Championship uh in that event just a couple weeks ago he's coming up in just a few minutes I mentioned off the top of the show big day for us football Rubes out there today it is officially 100 days between now and the start of the college football season not week zero actually week one North D state will be playing 100 days from today August the 29th in Boulder Colorado against the University of Colorado and H and behold we've got the head football coach of the Bison joining us today on the road um it's like the Ultimate Warrior from Parts Unknown uh Tim poisk uh joins us this morning uh I do you have a countdown clock do you need a countdown clock to know that it's 100 days out I got to make sure we get back and we get that set up I've been uh been out on the road um doing everything I can for Bison football with recruiting yes but it's exciting you know I I saw your Tweet the other night and obviously there's been some magical moments that you've been able to tie into this great honestly great social media tradition a way for our fans to get connected I know there's a lot of excitement um we'll get our guys back on campus here uh the 28th and so we got to start start really locking in and moving forward I told I couple of the guys I had on I Cole pton and Logan cop over the last couple of weeks that this is the one stretch of the Season that they actually have a way but that's not there's no time off for you guys correct for the coaching staff this is about is still ramped up you're on the as you mentioned you're on the road recruiting right now yeah you know I I really like the plan that we laid out for our assistant coaches which was about two weeks out on the road um you know going and seeing all of our top tier guys and then quite frankly um Zach and and the recruiting department did a good job of organizing myself going out and seeing our the guys that we have offered you know we can obviously have contact with those kids now and that's a big deal and so um we've been working that plan and then we get ready for another Sprint of Camp season yeah you know in June and then then we get a little bit of a a little bit of a break you know it it's just one of those things we're on the gas in a couple different areas is now um with portal recruiting and and portal uh situations that we never were before when you look calendars changed yeah that that's to me and you and I talked about this a couple times like how difficult is it to stay on top of literally everything change like with especially now with recruiting and how many visits you can have that's been reduced just to keep on top of all that you I mean how do you do that frankly you know it's it's interesting right like Coach B used to say we got to be surgical with a scalpel not a ax I think that we have to be um very open to talking about new ideas creating a plan going and attacking and then adjusting it from year to year unfortunately with some of the rule changes and some of these nuances I just don't think that we've been able to not necessarily North Dakota State but college football coaches in general we haven't been able to settle in and work our and work our new if that would make sense and so just being adjustable um being sharp being aggressive being on the attack um keeping uh the moment to what it is and right now we're in a we're in a stage where we're out here pushing recruiting we got to knock that down and then we can focus on um other things that come to us last time we talked was right after Spring ball got done I know you had to sweat out the last couple weeks of the of the portal window obviously Eli green decided to make his decision tell me about that that weak stretch of just was it nerve-wracking were you were guys like you worry about guys coming to the office how did that go for that last seven eight days yeah I thought our I thought our assistant coaches did a really good job conveying information on Ball Camp rosters um the vision for each individual and how they fit into the team concept and then quite frankly I was available to anybody that wanted to talk individually um about about their situation um about their vision for themselves and their families and I I guess one of the things d That's frustrating is you know these these kids enter the portal all sorts of ways you know they're either real front upfront and honest or you kind of get a phone call while you're out on the road and their decisions been made and we don't get an opportunity to fight or fight for them or to or to sell a vision or to make sure we're all on the same page and so that's that's been one thing over the last four or five years that does get a little frustrating again we just we don't have time to cry we got to move forward and we got to proceed and we got to do the best job we can with the controllable things with the Collective Now in place Tim tell me about that and what your your vision on that and what you've spoke to to fans about this is necessary for ones that I think got hit with a 2x4 over the head with it in December to say okay hey this is this is real this is why it's important tell me your interaction action on that so far yeah you know with the with the green and gold Collective um I think you know just overall my vision is still team oriented it's still based on retention it's still based on um black and white circumstances of how many reps guys play they'll be rewarded and quite frankly we'll reward out based on what we have in that in in that bank it's not for me to have conversations with 10 individuals to say they've earned this or that based on how they feel you know I haven't been part of those conversations with anybody on our team and so I think one of the one of the reasons why people can get behind the collective is that we're going to do it based on the old North Dakota way like you have to earn what you get we're going to be reasonable with what we're doing um we want to push the envelope and get as much as we can in there for our players that are doing a really good job in the community academically you know the Allon money is another piece of this um and so we're just we got to do the best job we can in making our kids appreciate their opportunity at North Dakota state which for the most part all of them do already so if we can sweeten the pot a little bit um based on years in the program in the fall and in the spring kind of reward based on repetitions played all right so it's a 100 days out how much have you actually looked at Colorado film well you know the the comment I would make on that is enough you know I feel good about where I'm at um but it's interesting because you got a new D coordinator you got a new o coordinator you have a situation where 18 new players or different players are going to be joining so our guys are actually this week we're doing a simulated game plan week um and we're using Colorado to do that and so they're very much in a mode of trying to be as intense as they can in May for an opponent they're going to play we're going to play in August um and so I'm looking forward to getting some of that feedback back from the coordinators um situational feedback and then I think this game is going to come down to us it's not going to be about what they do um it's about a couple of their players and us being on point with those players but our systems and our schemes have to be very sound in this one because it's not going to be a matter of out game plan on each other because we we're going to have very little information hey before I let you go I ESP BN told me I was visiting with them about this yeah there's a lot about Dion a little bit about this as well is about North Dakota State tell me about that you've been gone now back to say Okay first game as a head coach Prime Time Under The Lights Thursday night likely the first college football game on on ESPN give me the emotions on that when I say that I just fire up like I give you the coach speak uh it's just another opponent no it's one of these potential landmark um games or opportunities for us and for our kids to be on national TV Okay so we've got to be open to the idea of going to the deep end of the pool this fall Camp so we can play we can play very relaxed very free and very aggressive on that opportunity that we get on that Thursday and quite frankly regardless of the opponent but why run from this is an FBS game and at NDSU we've cherished these moments um they've led to a lot of great stories a lot of uh unbelievable experiences for our fan base it wouldn't matter who we were playing first but maybe it adds just a little tick you know this is going to be cool it's I'm looking forward to it um we'll be prepared as a staff our players will be prepared so that we can enjoy it uh I saw you play golf uh down the Twin Cities a couple weeks ago with some alumni where'd you shoot that day oh boy it was in uh I think it was 80 or something didn't play good on the front didn't play good on the front but played great on the back you know I really appreciated uh Jamal Thomas you know putting that together because it was a good opportunity to see Ramone Hummer yeah um it was a hell of an opportunity to be around Billy Turner you know Dan LaRon got to play golf with Colton eagle and uh Billy um you know it was just it was a really good experience it was fun okay now you you ripped the Bandit off give me a great Colton heagle story since you're both Wisconsin guys you got a good heagle story early from early in his career me Colton Hegel and his in the former D coordinator we went fishing with his dad up on Leech Lake and it was one of those grinder days they don't call it you know they don't call it catching for a reason and I just it something to the effect of come on TP just keep keep grinding you know and like it was just so fitting um but there's so many stories you know that I've got to experience with Colton since his playing days um everybody brings up the Georgia Southern deal yeah you know all those tackles and so forth but you know Colton's a pretty good golfer he swings pretty good okay um and he was really he was part of a really good baseball team in high school um and so people don't understand remember that at whiffle ball tournament was always real passionate real LJ was telling me stories about that you guys know how that probably went man but I just love Colton hegel's um competitive Spirit man everything that does you know he's a guy that I enjoy spending time with because of that same with Billy you know their competitive Spirits what's allowed them to be was successful football players good to see you thanks for uh giving us a few minutes be safe out there on the road and we'll see you soon okay yeah thank you guys and gold bison man we're fired up there he goes Tim POC NDSU head football coach joining us on the road this morning as we start the countdown 100 days out from the Bison season opener at Colorado we'll take a break we come come back the NCA West track regionals get going tomorrow in fille Arkansas mored will be represented and DSU freshman Michael Hao will join us after winning the summit League Championship we'll do that with hot Mike returns after this welcome back everybody hot Mike rolls on on this Tuesday Morning appreciate the head football coach of the buys and giving us a few minutes there get you all jacked up for football I know we're not even to Memorial day but uh those of us that uh enjoy the runup to the start of a new football season especially this one with uh NDSU opening on national TV against Colorado 100 days from today one day from today the NCA West track regionals will get underway in fville Arkansas the bison are well represented both on the men's and the women's side about this time last year our next guest was in studio after accomplishing a pretty record setting feat uh in Mor at high school now he joins us uh with a chance to go to the NCA track championships in Eugene Oregon he's also a summit League champion as a freshman uh Michael hgo joins us this morning on the eve of the long jump competition uh it's great to see you man you come a long way from yeah last time this year we're talking about a a high school championship and now you're a summit League champ is it sunk in yet I know it was a couple weeks ago but give me the emotions on that I wouldn't really say it sunk in quite yet I mean I I think so um but I'm kind of more excited about the team title I think it's it was a lot of fun winning with my teammates and yeah it's been a lot of fun you know I I really uh I had fun winning it by myself too but but I think that team title is something different it's just a lot of fun to celebrate with your teammates well let's let's do we're going to focus on you for a sec here tell me when you in the long jump when you cranked out that La did you know you had it did when you had that last jump like okay I think I won this thing yeah yeah so I was the last Jumper in the finals so I had already won it on my last like with my last jump so I just uh yeah I had my last jump like for free so I want it no matter what so I just got the clap going and had a had a good time with it I saw that that you got that going was that that's was that out of character for you you're normally pretty straight laced even even kill guy no that's my first time ever getting the clap going throughout my whole career so yeah that that's out of character for sure to have I guess that freedom of being able to do that describe that okay like the pressure's off to go and okay I'm going to go un cork one now yeah it felt real good I think I got a little bit too hyped up I didn't uh I didn't really execute the jump real well but you know it was it felt really good it was fun so now you're off here you're down in Arkansas again still just your freshman year has this set in okay now I have a chance if I do something really well I can go to you know tracktown USA where everybody wants to go the Super Bowl track yeah I mean that's the goal I mean that's the big goal that's what I want to do I'm really focused on that right now um you know I hope this isn't the end point for this year I want to go a couple more more weeks um yeah yeah that's that's set in I'm really focused on getting there what do you in your mind is there a number you have to hit say okay if I jump here I know I got a chance to advance I think like um coach pretard was saying High 770s probably will make it in holy cow have you thought of okay like now mentally that's the number that's in your mind then yeah yeah I mean I'm confident I think I can do that um you know I've had struggles hitting the board with my jumps so I've I've left a lot of um length in my jumps out there so I really don't know what I can actually jump if I hit the board so um I'm pretty confident if I do hit the board I can get something out there have you asked about what the atmosphere going to be like is that do you is that a thing you even think about or you're just out there and you're mentally focused is that do you even care about what's going on I don't really care about that I mean at this level of meat I'm going to be focused and hyped up no matter what what's going on but I would assume that the atmosphere will be good which will only help you know the adrenaline did you have a goal set in mind heading into this like was this part of it or just whatever I can do to I know you're gonna say whatever I can do to help the team but what was personal goals coming in for your freshman year I I'm not gonna lie I didn't really have any I didn't really think about it because I mean I'd never been track base so I just didn't uh I didn't know what a good goal would be I didn't know you know what to think mean I just go into every meet trying to win it so that's about that's about all that's a good point you make because I know you've done so many other sports the fact that you're just 247 this is it I mean and now this is already what you've hit I mean you got to be thinking okay if this is just for year one I don't know what I can do a couple years from now yeah yeah that's I've been thinking about that I mean I'm really just focused on now just winning the meets now if I just focus on you know every day every workout every day I mean it'll be it'll come easier in the future take me back to the Summer League Championship here a couple weeks ago you mentioned following your teammates what is as a track team member what is that like you've already got your stuff done how are you what are you doing the rest of the meat then tell us about that I mean I so I ran the 4X one on Saturday also um so if I were weren't to be like if I didn't run that I would just be you know cheering people on the whole time but I mean I was kind of prepping for that and uh at at the same time cheering people on but once I finished the 4x1 on Saturday I mean it was all like I'm just at other events you know with all my other teammates I mean everybody is the same way everybody's cheering on teammates you know that's what make it makes it fun and um yeah that's basically it just cheering on teammates trying to get them to win events so we can win the win the meet now it came down the last three are you are you following all the scores there especially came the 4x4 basically decided it right yeah I'm not I mean I'm not really I'm not a big point person like I don't really just break them down but I listen to what people are saying and I mean I just I just cheer for them to win each event I don't really think about the scores like I look at them but I can't really calculate them all like what's going to happen here what's GNA happen here who's going to score what the fact that you were part of this to keep it going to keep this run going how important was that for you to be a key piece of this as well for the India shu to keep its streak going of of Summer League championships yeah I mean there was there was some pressure on us to keep it going because we lost you know we lost some dudes that can that can produce and I mean this was this would have been our year to like not win it because we were just missing a lot of dudes to red shirting and to injuries um so yeah there is there's there's a good amount of pressure and you know I knew that I would have to step up and other people would have to step up to keep it going you know I didn't want it to be my first year for us to uh break the streak of like 16 years or whatever it is so yeah of pressure I I always hear about the Freshman wall it what's the did you have you hit that in track or is that still the come the Freshman wall have you hit that yet or no oh no I mean I don't think I'm gonna because I mean I did Sports in high school you know I I did track for like one and a half to two months a year so I mean I don't I mean I just uh I just think it feels good be able to do this all year long and it's it's I still got a lot of work to do but you know I'm excited for it and I don't think I'm going to hit a wall hopefully have you uh when's the last time you picked up a basketball what's the last time you done or catch a football have you done that lately at all or no uh my last game my senior year I think I thrown football around a couple of times but that's it nothing really I mean I just been completely focused on track um in the fall I mean I watch football and I I watch some basketball you know I've been watching the temp rules but not really playing myself no just focused on um track I gotta add Before I Let You Go just the feeling tomorrow before you jump what do you think is going to be going through your mind emotions about about before competing tomorrow it's just going to be any other meet really I mean more adrenaline than usual I would assume just based on the the level of compe ition it's going to be but I mean either way I'm going to be ready it's gonna I don't know I guess I'll I'll I'll have to wait to see what it's going to be like but I assume just a lot of adrenaline really excited and yeah that's probably about it is there another event you'd like to try that you haven't done yet I know you're doing long jump you've done some sprinting is there another one hey I'd like to Dick my toes in this maybe next year is have one come to mind uh I wouldn't say there's one that I really want to do but I'll probably I'll probably do some triple jump and sometime uh once I can do it right and know that I'm not going to hurt myself but just that and sprinting a little bit you know I'll probably Sprint a little bit more triple jump is the most awkward event yeah triple jump is just awkward isn't it yeah yeah um it's not really my thing but I mean I I know I can do it somewhat so I'll Pro I'll probably end up doing that some I really appreciate the time but especially before the meet thanks for doing this good luck tomorrow we'll talk soon okay all right good to see there he goes Michael hgo freshman from mored Minnesota the NDSU track team down in Arkansas he competes tomorrow the Bison will be well represented at the NCA uh West regionals Matt craft is there of course and the javelin Jared white is there and the pole vault we mentioned Paul olon we had him on last week he won the to cathlon at the summit League he's competing in the high jump cam Landis who was the outdoor MVP is in the shot put uh Michael goes tomorrow night at 6 o'clock in the long jump we'll keep an eye on that uh throughout the week and of course the bis and women are well represented down there you got to finish in the top 12 in each event uh to make Eugene and the NCA track championships and the Bison have usually sent at least two sometimes more than that um we remember a couple years ago they sent their 4x1 team which was just a remarkable achievement that happened a couple years ago and uh we'll see what happens how Go's number is CRA by the the number that he won uh the Summer League Championship was 24 feet and 3.75 in which is 7.41 met I know we have to get ready for that for the Olympics this summer um he's going to have to be in that range again uh to qualify for the NCA Championship we'll be keeping an eye on that coming up tomorrow night we're due for a break we take one this be a busy show we'll come back and wrap things up and get you ready for a fun Tuesday night hot mik we'll wrap right after this on wdx KFL TV and in forum.com wrapping up our busy Tuesday show tomorrow night against Oral Roberts Cal Frost was named the summit League Player of the Year from South Dakota State uh outfielder there who we saw we televised their game Frost is good um for the jack rabbits he also won the newcomer of the year I thought Jake shaftner had a chance at that bu an uh infielder uh but it goes to frost uh Jacob Hall standout pitcher from oral Rob H was the pitcher of the Year Matt gsman was the defensive player of the year from Omaha and Evan Porter the head coach of the Mavericks was the coach of the year the Bison had uh a pair of first team selections Schaffner was at shortstop and Joey Danielson who is one of the best uh save numbers in the country I think he has 11 11 or 12 he's in the top three in the country in that uh were first teamers catcher will Bush was second team and a few honorable mentions including Thompsons uh Kaden Schwab uh Sam Canton James dun and uh Garrett Hill and Logan Knight were honorable mentions from the Bison summmer league tournament begins I mentioned tomorrow uh we know St Thomas won the league they're ineligible for the tournament so Omaha is the one seed they'll play Northern Colorado that's the first game tomorrow afternoon and the bison and the golden eagles is the late game it's double elimination there you see the bracket uh for the games all in Tulsa only once has Oral Roberts not won the league tournament when it's been played in their facility that was 2019 Omaha won it that year and uh the Bison took four of six from the golden eagles a couple of walk-off uh hits by Garrett Hill from willston North Dakota and they'll have their hands full tomorrow uh with that one and we'll uh we'll get you ready for that coming up on the buys and media Zone uh show tomorrow speaking of which
