my mother um is a very talented [Music] [Applause] singer it's such a complicated relationship my heart is broken that I've lost my mother Mariah says in a statement to us adding that she feels blessed that she was able to spend the last week with her before she passed Mariah credits her mom with introducing her to music she was singing this Arya over and over and over and in Italian when she messed up that I said no mommy it goes like this so she was very um encouraging this book would not be possible without Mariah dedicated her 2020 Memoir the meaning of Mariah Carey in part to her mother saying I will love you the best I can always Mariah told Andy Cohen while promoting the book that their relationship was complicated certain things about her that I've always always acknowledged her Talent as an opera singer um and the fact that she encouraged me to believe in myself I'll always take care of her I still take care of her to this day in 1999 Mariah and her mom sat down with Oprah talking about the challenges Patricia and Mariah's father faced as an interracial couple in the 60s they divorced when Mariah was 3 years old were you ostracized by your own family well when I told my mother that I was going to marry a black man um she was very upset Mariah suffered a double tragedy yesterday with not only the passing of her mother but also her estranged sister Allison who was 63 Allison had reportedly been in hospice the closer I got to my sister the more clearly I could see her broken parts Mariah also wrote about their fractured relationship in her Memoir Allison later suing her for what she wrote I wouldn't have gone here if things hadn't been done to me if I hadn't been dragged by certain people and treated as an ATM machine with a wig on I would say troubled I I would say traumatized that's how Mariah described Allison to Oprah in 2020 on Apple's the Oprah conversation opening up about being part of a dysfunctional family with Allison and her older brother we didn't grow up together by the time I got into the world you know they had already been damaged in in my opinion [Music]
