Alexis Ohanian share fav hobby so I had I talked to a couple buddies of mine and I was like hey can you get me some of the boxes the cars that have fla j in them so these this is a set of cards I don't know if you've seen them before but so some of your Autos you signed these I don't know when oh my gosh in McDonald americ I remember my hand was hurting and so we're going to do a thing and we'll see if we we're going to break these live and then we'll see if we get any of your cards and then I also I kind of I like this as a concept because I want to hear all the tea on the other players that we pull yeah I got some tea we're going to try to I got some tea this is a new show concept you're welcome overtime we're just getting right in it I see I need the nails oh look at this but so this is I you don't did you ever collect trading cards no oh actually yes I do my grandmother she makes booklets of them and gives them to me of like all I have all the WNBA players from like USA teams I have to show you okay but so we're hoping to pull a couple if you get any good ones we'll get them sleeved and we'll get them gr I'll get them oh Brandon Miller no way he was in my class now the one ones we really are chasing are the Autos so there's some good ones so there'll be an autograph either on the card um and there's I mean the commons are still good too I'm trying to get Olympia into trading cards too she's not as um she's not as serious you know she's she's collecting all the things just for fun I'm like but they're collector's items so any if we we're going to try to pull oh let me help you give this okay Nails got you I got you the camera for it okay okay oh hero thank you there we go there we go and it's funny my so the guys who are real serious about this will wear like latex gloves when they're opening it yeah I've seen it on Instagram yeah they're they're hardcore we're not that hardcore here but uh but I it's got to feel pretty cool to have cards no this is cool right I mean and I've never seen him for real because you know they gave it to while he's there but okay I'm I'm chasing what uh what what yes all right we got one okay good big F all right all right hold on good now so this is a penny sleeve and so so you're going to all right so there's a little trick here you want to kind of so you pop it open don't ask but anyway you slide it in there and then we'll put in a top loader and I'm going to get these graded for you too so we'll get them graded which puts them in these beautiful cases and they grade you know sort of the quality of the card oh my gosh this is so Co this should grade a 10 and then what you're going to do is just Vault them forget about them and it's kind of like okay it's not a security but it's kind of like owning stock in yourself right and so these assets I've I've bought literally all of my wife's best cards over the last six years and so I have a collection I mean at this it's like a multi-million dollar collection of all the Serena's cards and if I had if Olympia was going into sports I would insist that we do this exact same thing which is you want to get a couple of your very best cards and you get them graded and you just put them away and don't even think about them and then as you're your career grows as your star grows like it becomes for collectors this is a representation of of you it's like okay so wait when did you start collecting well I mean I When did Alexis start collecting trading cards was a kid I collected cards to the 90s but then about six years ago six years ago a buddy mine was like Hey dude trading cards are back and I was like what are you talking about and they're like no no no they're back and they're making them again and they're they're being a lot smarter with they overproduced them in the '90s so there were just too many of them to be valuable got you but they got more scarce now in the modern era so they do limited runs they do the ones the ones we're chasing with the autograph on it so there's a very limited of those oh so you really rarely get an autograph yes and so that's why I bought a couple boxes I was like I hope we pull one we we got but the the the chases for those autograph cards which are the really valuable ones and and then the thinking is like you know I realized the hobby was back and then of course the first thing I did was I was like are there even tennis cards cuz I didn't follow tennis as a kid and I I didn't think there were any there weren't many incidentally but I I went on eBay and I found Serena's rookie card this was like Serena’s rookie card six years ago was selling for less than Anna cornova and I looked at that and I was like this makes no sense no sense but the market was undervaluing it because it was you know predominantly dorky dudes right right sorry guys uh who who were you know probably had maybe a corova poster on their wall in college and just were totally mispricing the value of the greatest of all time so I quietly started buying all of them I mean I have thousands and thousands and thousands but I got a I got them for a song and over the years I started blabbing a lot more on podcast and stuff about doing it so the price has now gone up and Serena does have the most expensive all of the most expensive women's uh sports cards but uh it's a fun thing now because the hobby has come back and I have a six almost seven year old and for Olympia I want to get her into it and so I've bought her you know she we we've we've broken a couple for the W I've never broken any of these so this is my first time with the McDonald's allamerican when you go pro we'll make sure to get the W ones too but the you know I'll do some nwsl with her I got grny dick hey aut there we go see doesn't that feel good I love gry D he's so cool that's the that is the thrill of the of the okay I kind of like this I really like this actually yes and it has it has this element to it and here you go make sure put that one that is the penny sleeve now you got all the the lingo and this is a top loader here I'll do this for you and and uh oh my go okay that was that gave me a little D see that's Auto so you must have signed I don't know if they probably would have given you the sticker they probably gave you a a whole sheet of stickers and you sign and they took them away and then they put them on the cards yep wow but oh one other fun thing too okay when you do your next card deal for the most rare cuz like they'll tell you let's see here uh this one doesn't have the quantity some of these it'll say literally on the card like one out of 50 or two out of 50 like The Limited set yeah if you ever end up sigic one of the really like a one of one where they only make one of that card in the set it's automatically going to be the most rare but then if you do sometimes athletes will put like not The most rare trading card! just their signature but like if you put a couple of lyrics one of your songs like something extra to like personalize it it makes it even more special wow because then people what they're doing is they're pulling the cards they're taking a photo of it they're bragging about it on social media and you get a 100 cards that just have an autograph and like that's nice but then you get this extra like wrinkle where it's like oh and she included some of her lyrics on there it just makes it more more special more unique this is dope and more valuable I actually have a story about aah Jordan Walsh is that a good do we like Jordan oh yeah he just won a championship with the Boston Celtics congratulations the Celtics I'm not a Celtics it's all right it's okay it's okay congrats let tell about I met her at McDonald's All American this year that year and like I think like a week later she went to a party and she was shot like nine times no she had committed to USC she was playing with juu and she like rehabed got back and now I think she's coming back to play this year so it's crazy god wow no really she was out of main sport she's such an amazing person okay we're getting that one we're getting that one great yeah she has a great story love you girl wow oh my goodness man let's go k Wallace boom that's my Flau’jae gets Cason Wallace card! boy shout out K OKC Thunder great rookie year love you man I you know I got a great story a little bit of tea he was like the I I'm a little introverted right and when I yeah yes really a little ner little nervous cuz when I go to those competitions I'm like locked in like I don't want to make friends I'm trying to I'm trying to kill y'all basically that's right but he was like the one of the only guys that I sat by on the bus I play him like a lot of my unreleased music he was like oh my God FJ this is actually hard like I love this so we kind of got a bond I went to go see him when he played the pills when I was in new future future star F boom that's a good looking card right there oh my gosh there we got pulled that one I got it yes I didn't know how to you just start all right we're going to this this show is now uh a card breaking show that's all it is this makes me so happy no I'm sorry this is your show we're going to do whatever we want to do let's do it let's do it okay I'm all out this was super cool though I got my future stars call got my friends card we still might get an auto we still might get an auto one of your Autos I'm a little slower on this but I'll I'll I'll leave these with you and then you can pull whatever oh I actually love this now dang my grandma my grandma actually she get like booklets filled all the W Stars what's going on how cool is this all right this just just got me into a new hobby yes excellent so I'm a small investor in overtime from a minute ago and I remember calling up Dan Dan Porter this is a few years ago and I was like Dan women's basketball and he's like really and I was like no you don't understand man if you don't do this I'm gonna do it I'm gonna make a competitive I'm gonna make a women's basketball league that's going to do what you all should be doing if you don't do it he was like okay duy noted and then I saw the headline and I was like son of a gun he did it did all right he did it but uh this is good I'm glad very glad you're making content on here too they should be doing everything they can to support they are support the the Future Stars Future Stars what's up everyone it's your girl fly I want say thank y'all for tuning in to another episode of The Best of Both Worlds podcast with f now today I have a legend in here he's a humble Legend he's going to say he's not a legend he's a legend he's a legend he's a legend he's an entrepreneur investor the founder of Reddit and one of my favorite actually no my favorite supporter of women's sports Alexis oh thank you so much for joining us today thank you f thank you first no I have to run that back why because we can't forget that you are Epic Dad one of the best dads ever I'm trying thank you thank you for taking care of Olympia here in New Orleans last weekend you know my girl I got to spend Father's Day with him actually yeah in uh can France it was amazing that's right we did a panel together taught me a lot of good things we going to talk about some of those things today on the podcast I'm so happy to have you here everybody give a hand up for the goats let's go let's go live audience oh yeah live audience today that's stop manufactured that's real thank you all right all right so first question when did you first start investing in women's SP Sports and why you know it was Angel City and it Why Alexis invested in women’s sport was 2019 March and I can't remember why I was I I was feeling a little spicy on Twitter and I was talking about how undervalued uh women's soccer was and in particular the reason I was thinking about it was World Cup was about to happen I don't follow soccer period I don't follow women's soccer but I knew the American women were the best in the world and I knew that every four years I would still manage to watch A Match or two because I like greatness and like a lot of Americans I love seeing Americans be successful and I had seen a tweet literally that day saying that one of the teams in the nwsl the women's professional soccer league in America had just sold for like $4 million and I had to read it twice I was like how is it possible an entire team right sold for $4 million when at least one of those players Megan rapino who was a star again I'd never watched the sport before but I knew who she was you know Mega rapino yeah here's someone who has Brand recognition that's worth at least that much a year and her whole team is worth that little and it was just simply the math doesn't math I started ranting on Twitter and I said by the end of my rant I just said I'm going to buy a team in the end of be sell and what was so compelling a ton of fans like die hard women soccer fans were in the repes saying don't talk about it be about it and I loved seeing that energy and then were there were haters who also said no one cares about women's sports you're an idiot you're going to lose all your money and I love them too because I screenshotted their tweets and then as we had record crowds sellout crowds as the valuation kept growing I would Tweet back at them that's talk with a screenshot of their tweet just thanking them for the energy and for the motivation because you don't ever want in my job whether it's building companies or investing in companies you don't want to ever look for things no one cares about you want to look for areas where there is strong emotion ideally strong love but there's no reason to be an irrational hater unless there is something special happening that is somehow threatening you you're not going to waste your time hating for something that doesn't actually really matter and and and Alex Morgan I always got to give her her flowers another one of the Stars national team resp she was also in my replies and she was like Hey I can help and I actually I brought her down from she was playing Orlando at the time we spent an afternoon together I was just taking notes asking her questions trying to get smart about the sport and by the end of that conversation with Alex I was like I'm buying a team and then that led to Angel City by the end of the year and now since it's just been one thing after another obviously the offseason yeah uh this reality show and then now this women's track event and who knows maybe women's basketball could be on the horizon speaking of women's basketball knows speaking of women's basketball would you ever consider owning a WNBA team what are what are your thoughts on that absolutely and you know what okay Does Alexis want to own a WNBA team? so I've never talked about this publicly I inside school yeah I had a conversation with Adam Silver years ago this is before Angel City this is probably like 2017 2018 and he had mentioned it and I was like yeah this is really interesting obviously when you're married to Serena Williams like even before I had started owning or investing in women's sports you know Serena's Serena so I think it was already sort of on his mind it's like hey wouldn't this be nice if and I told him I was said look man I've I've I only have I grew up in an NFL household um so that was the only sport ever on my Radar football was the only sport I played the only thing like that was the only thing that mattered so I was very oblivious to All Things basketball as well as women's basketball but I was like you know what I'm going to start paying attention and and I'll tell you up until this season I wasn't sure what it would take for the W to really break out but what was already obvious and you can find the tweets is about four years ago college basketball was so clearly the Battleground for women like the thing to actually care about even three or four years ago and there's a tweet from me asking the NCAA to sell me the rights to women's college basketball wow because I was way more interested in figuring out how to make that viable because it was wide open like the W's been around for decades right they've they've there've been ladies putting in the work building up that league and ironically the NC BL had been so underinvestigated Women’s NCAA basketball has higher ratings usually there are consequences so I mean just imagine you're taking a thing that today is driving all of the attention and that attention means revenue and four years ago the Stars weren't even getting a weit room to train in and couldn't even get The Branding because they thought it was too precious and belong to the men this is it is insane and so it was actually much more appealing for me as an investor to say how do I go into this where they're clearly messing up so badly and that's that's probably around the time I was like hey Dan you know I know put some money in overtime like I think the NCAA is incredibly vulnerable here wow and and now the things that happened that worked was you know obviously nil opened up a door because in this country like you might have feelings but in the face of capitalism that sort of Trumps everything and so no matter you know all the people in my replies who would say like oh no one cares about women sports you cannot make that argument now anymore because the dollars don't lie it's not a thing and and nil made it so crystal clear that you all were so valuable to these colleges to these programs to that league and they just had been dropping the ball for decades no absolutely I think I I I think honestly the media some somewhat is at fault of that and I think the media is still kind of at fault by like painting a narrative of the sport and a in a way that doesn't really Push It Forward you know what I mean and it's like you know you can say sometimes all press is good press but you know when you're building a wave of something like the media needs to get behind it in a more positive way I believe you know what I mean yeah I've been seeing this you know everybody everybody has a mic and a podcast and some headphones and they just say anything they do and and their incentive whether it's the established media whether it is an you know individual everyone's incentive is to get more attention to get more clicks and unfortunately it often incentivizes the most like click baity hot takes possible and and to actually answer your question I would not rule it out the W is something that like we've been thinking about a lot and my wife may have had an interview where she just kind of let it slip thing we were looking at but uh but one way or another like it's it's very much on the radar and and yeah for the folks like I don't know you're considering your prospects you know you've got still time because you're you know still thriving in college and all but I think what is so compelling right now is you have a league that is like overnight become so much more culturally relevant yeah simply because of a draft class and and that's I you know I'm only 41 I'm old but I'm only 41 and I can't remember in terms of men's sports I've not seen anything like that where there was such an overnight awar where everyone's just like oh damn right like but like this is the power of social media because so many of these stars are not just great on the court they bring a following they bring a fan base and again this stuff's going to look obvious like I I I the fact that that we made a big deal out of what who am I going to pick on LeBron is wearing before a game love you LeBron you've got great fashion sense better than I do but which is not not hard but the fact that we thought this was a big deal for the the pre-match fits for the guys is like cute that's really great guys yeah has anyone in the history of fashion ever cared that much about what a bunch of dudes were wearing no no and yet these statuesque athletic basketball players in the W like this should not surprise anyone oh my gosh the tunnel fit that WNBA tunnel fits are lit the tunnel fits are such a big deal the tunnel fits are viral but this has been but again this is this is where folks are going to realize like my God we were squandering so much of this storytelling and this conversation for so long because what does that tell me as a brand now let's say I own a team or I own a league what have you there's an entire genre Fashion Beauty these are businesses that never looked twice at Sports and now there's an obvious Gateway and they spend lots of money on brand marketing there is an obvious Gateway because simply because of women athletes that now means more money more Revenue more growth like this stuff it it it should feel obvious in another five years I got you no speaking of tunnel fits I I have some favorites I'm not going to lie I want to know in the comments who are y'all favorite tunnel fits cuz you got you got some steppers coming out I'm not going to lie it's insane like people are literally tuned in just tunnel fit love tunnel fit okay okay next question next question next question okay you support women's sports so much that you have created a Alexis’ new track event with Gabby Thomas new track event and bringing the fastest women in the world yes to to to go to a meet a track meet right and you're Laing the off seon executive produced by Miss purse the goat that's right 100% on Instagram um just tell me like how those came about and like what really inspired you to put on that event you know for the track event it was a lot of pattern matching from 2019 in women's soccer you got the Olympics coming up you have arguably the most exciting watched sport in in track and particularly women's track everyone's captivated by it every four years and then for some reason it goes away but the reality is these women are still running they're still competing it's just those events are not getting the same publicity the same awareness and then I just did the same thing as four years ago I talked to all the fastest women on the planet and just asked them a lot of dumb questions took notes they you know Gabby led the way in terms of being incredibly supportive this is Gabby Thomas um and and what I came to the conclusion of was like you know the top prize at the time was $30,000 which is insane you can't be a professional athlete if the best of the best of the best in a season makes 30 grand for winning a Race So let's just change that let's just double it and so overnight created literally a record-breaking women's track event the largest person in history of the sport and we announced that Gabby and I in April within the next few months we actually saw multiple other folks either creating other events now Michael Johnson has one with a large purse and even the diamond League which was the original sort of professional League increased their purse prize and it was nice to see the ripple effect and at the same time I'm like we haven't even started yet right like we just announced the thing wait until you see it and and our hope is we can create something that that shows people this isn't just a once every four years thing these women are here all the time being great blend the cultural with the athletic and and we've got some some very interesting ambitious stuff around music that's tied in with it it's going to be a lot of fun and it'll all be done in like three hours and change a standard not a multi-day event yeah a standard awesome American sporting event and and just trying to reimagine and you know with with the offseason that was mid's Vision to take unscripted you know which is a format that women dominate whether they are Kardashians or Housewives or real estate agents and then apply it to sports where for the last 5 years we've been championing all these great shows but they're all sports docu series about dudes and again if you were inventing a genre defining unscripted show about sports and you just looked at what were the most successful unscripted shows of all time you would obviously feature women athletes right right and again the fact this hadn't been done yet I hope much like these other projects is going to make people realize like wow okay there is tremendous opportunity even see response to the trailer I would love to do a women's basketball version of the offseason I know something we're going to talk about uh but like the the the fun and I'll tell you the most surprising thing about it every bit of sports architecture infrastructure media everything that exists today was largely created for men athletes and for predominantly male viewers and and look as one of those guys I love it it caters to my needs exactly is I need it to but the reality is half of the human beings on this planet are not men so half of your potential audience is being ignored in the sort of thinking of how you build it right and what's so fun about women's sports whether we're talking about the tunnel fits whether we're talking about a show like offseason whether we're talking about like this this uh Track event when when when folks are showing up for athlos New York right they're going to an event that's built from first principles for storytelling for a very different audience and it turns out women and men are not the exact same and when you start building The Fan Experience when you start building the content experience actually asking viewers actually asking these athletes like what would you want to see what do you you get a different and I sit here as a white dude not knowing firsthand but being able to take notes right right and ask questions and then do the things that that people want it's not actually that hard hard it's not actually that hard uh but it's been it's been fun to see the momentum yeah most definitely okay okay I've heard you call yourself Petty before very Petty yes it's true I Alexis calls himself petty! I saved all those Mean Tweets you K I let people know I'm with first of all right back with what's your sign like when's your birthday Taurus I'm stubborn artistic I don't I don't know if it's my defining characteristic but it's probably up there it's up there I feel you though cuz sometimes I go back I I'm not g to lie I did this like when we first year for National Championship they was talking trash about us I saved every tweet and then we actually won the championship I went back to replying replying reply I rep I got too I'm a petty Queen yes I love that what what do you think was your most Petty moment ever ever there's a few we might even make some today I don't know um most Petty moment ever I oh there's a lot okay I'll I'll choose a professional one I told you every time we sell out every time Angel City hits a new valuation I do pull out one of those old tweets and I screenshot and I tag the person and I'm just like hey tag I tag him I let him know of course it's not enough just to post there tweet no you got no I got to let them know just be like thanks but I'll tell you the original version of that was 2005 so I'm just out of college first-time CEO just starting Reddit brand new company you know we've raised $122,000 we we're just just trying to survive and Yahoo you probably don't even know what Yahoo is I know Yahoo is okay well this company called Yahoo which was much more relevant in 2005 um invited us to go to San Francisco this was like Silicon Valley to go meet with their executive team and I was excited cuz I'm like I've we were in we were in Boston I'd never been to Silicon Valley before this was like I've made it like I'm a tech CEO going to Silicon Valley l so I show up this executive sits us down we go through the whole meeting and I thought we were there because he wanted to either maybe invest or even buy us all right and we get to this meeting things are going okay and he's like wait a second he's like how big is trap is Reddit like what's your traffic like and I'm like I we get about a thousand users a day and it was still small we were 6 months old he looks at me and he's like a thousand users a day he's like you're were a rounding error compared to Yahoo he's like why are you even here and I'm like dude you invited us like is that is that a thing you do at Yahoo is just invite startups and then [ __ ] on them like is that that's that's what you do anyway the rest of the meeting did not go well but we fly back home and you know working out of our apartment at my desk I printed out and put on my wall next to me you are a rounding error and I looked at it every single morning and I've never named this executive he's still intact like I I don't worry I follow him just I like knowing what he's up to yeah it's not much and and when when Reddit passed Yahoo in traffic this was like four or five years ago I screenshotted and I told this story and I was like it just makes me feel so good and it's not again this is not with spite you you know I I was a 21 at that time 21-year-old first-time CEO again 12 Grand that's all the money we' raised these days companies raise millions of dollars with nothing we had 12 Grand but living like college students trying to build something that we thought could you know work maybe not become like a generational tech company but a minimum just work yeah and have this guy bring us in in front of his whole executive team and just [ __ ] on us yeah was so motivating yeah and I am so grateful for it yeah because there were some mornings I didn't want to get up and get to work but when I sat at my desk and I looked at that wall I was like I owe you for this man I I I need to prove you wrong every ounce of my being I have a moment like that let me tell you this list comes out right and it's like the top 25 They left Flau’jae off the top ballers list sophomores in the country M and I wasn't on the list they left that's oversight the list yeah I put the list on my screen saver like I'm on my screen saver top I think the top person on the list was Lauren Betts and it was Kiki rice and then it was you know Jan Barker all great paers don't wrong love yall to death I had them on my kill list yes yes I'm talking about every time I wake up I look up I'm looking at my alarm when it come on at 5:00 a.m. and I want to press snooze the the list is right behind there so like I I I I definitely understand I had that list on my phone and we got to the Elite 8 everybody saying how like I had like the best game in my career and the Elite 8 but like I had pressure with them like like they didn't even know it was coming I don't even think they could have prepared because it was already it was already smoked with them soon as I woke up that morning I had already beening preparing for them for that whole year cuz that list came out it's like a preseason list or or something so when I seen them in the elite eight yeah it was nothing they could do cuz I had already had my I had this in my mind for so long he visualized it yes and so I understand that that that motivation like it's not like spite it's not like I don't dislike you or nothing like that but that list right there made that list why you do that oh that look I'm telling you it is the right way to be it's I would I don't know if it's the healthiest way to be but it works it works for us and I fine with that and I'll tell you however you can process I really feel like look one size does not fit all but I definitely relate to that and I'll tell you what you know at 41 I've accomplished some stuff in my career I feel even more motivated and at times even more Petty about that because there's some part of me that doesn't want to ever feel complacent right that doesn't want to ever feel like that's enough right and and part of where I still draw some of that energy from frankly is that place of of the errant tweet of the errant post of the errant article of the thing and I look I got a Dropbox folder full of these things and it just organized Petty I don't know I just I love it P y'all organized and here's another too that I appreciate about you too is when you're in the arena when you're doing stuff what I have found right you you made a point a number of times here already to say hey it's all love y'all are great you're so quick to praise competitors and you're in a zero some business I'm right you have winners and losers every day on the court you know all the rest of us we kind of fake our wins and losses every day like I had a good day at work I had a bad day at work the quarter was a good quarter is a bad quarter but in sports you actually have but to have that positive some mindset of look yeah I'm going to I'm going to beat you I'm going to I'm going to visualize beating you I'm going to be the best but I'm still going to keep it all love absolutely it is this uh I think it's a very healthy Jos because so many of the people and let's be real about it the people who make the lists the people who criticize you know with their Twitter fingers yeah these are the people who are not actually doing stuff exactly yeah or and if they are and they still find time for that yeah what are the other insecurities that they struggle with and so when some of that stuff comes my way I do like any human initially react and be like oh you're going right in the Dropbox [ __ ] but then organized Petty is just it's giving me life I me but there's there's also a moment I love this where I am genuinely sad for them yeah because there's some part of them that is not my problem right and it's it's it's it's their own trauma it's their own insecurity it's their own issues and that's not my problem yeah no I got to go back to what you said about you know being able to tell your opponent like yeah I'm going to kill you but it's all love I think sportsmanship is the most important thing in basketball I think that I always talk about Kobe but it's really like that like Kobe would try to annihilate his Defenders his teammates come on his own teammates you don't come correct to practice what it's up with you you know okay I have to tell the story sorry um I know run time but no like I think it's so important to to have that mentality but also be able to separate it from like not crossing the line but still know like I'm going come here I'm going to demoralize you but after I'm going build you right up you know what I'm saying cuz we're all going for a common goal and I think that's the most important part about sports that even young kids got to understand so I think it's good for athletes to be able to that's why I think it's dope that they showed the handshake line and every time I go to the handshake line I try to tell the team like good job good job like even if it's a player that didn't play their best game I tell them like I watch your film I know what you like come back next time and do your big one you know what I'm saying cuz people need that you know what I'm saying so I always try to do that but you're better than me I don't know if I go that far for real I be like good game and move along no no you got to pour into them but also it's like you know speaking of teammates Kobe Bryant my coach Bob starky shout out coach he told me the story that Shaq Flau’jae shares a fav Shaq/Kobe story said about Kobe right because my worth ethic is off the charge sometimes I be just getting a little upset I'm feel like people ain't working how I'm working cuz I'll practice for four hours and stay in the gym after for two hours and just shoot right and he said flj you got to realize like everybody's not going to have your word ethic right and this is this is the conversation Kobe and Shaq had right um he told Kobe like Kobe like nobody's going to reach your worth ethic but the fact that you're getting us to work harder than we ever work is going to make us all better right and that made me think like wow like nobody might not ever reach my level of intensity my work ethic and I think about that when I'm like building my businesses and running my record label like everybody not going to have that same drive and that hunger because it's not theirs right but if I can get them to their highest level and their Max that's going to help me grow so much so I think about that like that yeah that's a gy when he dropped me off on that one I was like wow like that's like that's like inspirational cuz it really irritates me sometimes like I need I want y'all to work like me but everybody ain't gonna work like you you'll get what I'm saying it's it's a it is a Founder mindset that I talk about a lot with especially firsttime CEOs because you build a company you're a Founder you it's the same same Dynamic right you expect everyone else to want Advice for first time CEOs to work at that level and it's just it's inconceivable one CU they they don't own as much of the company as you do so practically speaking it's impossible but but Also spiritually like you just have to get over the fact that like it's just not in in a any population a 100 people a thousand people a million people 10 people you're always going to have the outlier that outlier often is the you know they're the anchor of the team they're the founder you hope uh the CEO you hope of the company and and it's okay everyone has a role to play and and you do bring up the rest yep with your work ethic for sure okay we gonna segue a little bit speaking of young CEOs yes your daughter the beautiful Olympian yes is a owner of two sports team at the age of five I know no she's six now well she was it was five when it when she first got the second one but yeah she's six now CU she's six now she going to be mad if she's like Papa let her know I'm six my bad my bad baby uh okay six this is still Flex I mean one year two sports team like like how did that happen what was your thought process behind that like you know how does she feel about it I mean she's six like does she know like what kind of flex she has right now she doesn't know so so don't tell her please she knows well uh no she has no idea um but practically speaking what happened you know 2019 start this team I set aside it's like a few hundred grand into a trust for her and any other Future Kids Serena and I have so adir good news you're also you're splitting it now with Olympia um but again the the marketing of it adira wasn't there so at the time it was just Olympia and and and why did I do that you know okay it was you know at the at the time nobody was investing in nwsl team it was a million dollars to buy a franchise in the nwsl that number the most reported most recently reported number was what I think San Francisco paid which was $53 million so was a big increase in four years wow but I wanted to make sure a material chunk of it was going directly into her Trust and any of our other Future Kids trust simply because I I really feel my number one responsibility is to conduct my business life my home life in a way that makes those girls proud and not that our kids are ever going to have to worry obviously Mama's done very well too but to give them this sense of ownership when the time comes that they're old enough to really process it and think about it to to create something that builds Equity value for them over the course of their lives and this was something my parents never could have done for me it's obviously something Serena's parents never could have done for her but it's something that we feel we have a responsibility to do and and I actually I think when I first told Serena I was doing it she was like okay good luck because the history of you know women's professional sports I think I think the N the nwl was the third Pro women soccer league in America like it did not seem obvious even to Serena at the time but obviously now with the success that we've seen and likely what it'll be worth in another 10 years those little girls are going to be just fine but I I wanted to create something that you know I I I you think a lot about Legacy building when you become a dad and and you start to think about that opportunity and obviously the most important thing is the hopefully the good presence I can give them okay but in addition I just loved the idea and why not let let a little black girl be a Trends Setter for you know team ownership why not flex no did something like that not really on a big scale like that but my new song came out of Beast if you listen like as soon as it turns on it's my little brother Aiden voice he says big four not the little one and we set up him a little account so that he can get money cuz I own all love and so like I definitely understand that I probably wouldn't tell him that till he's older cuz he little Aiden little Aiden he he gonna be like y y'all know I own songs I own his oh yes he's the one but no this is why I love having little girls she's so she's she's really good kid but I still wouldn't explain it to her right now yeah no and and I but I think that's really important and and that's how I was thinking like I was thinking like how can I like this song is going to live on forever you know it's a song with Lil Wayne one of my biggest probably be one of my biggest songs you know what I'm saying you have bigger have but right now but you know be one of my biggest features get bigger than Lil Wayne I know I know but sky's the limit for I'm thinking about like Adele feature too you can pull that off I don't Adele does not just hand out features Lil Wayne don't either that's you're right you're not wrong I love a but no listen so yeah but so I I I definitely understand that I have a a big question you said you're a football player well no I played in high school all right all right big fella you can go telling people that yeah okay okay football player I want to know I think the people want to know have you ever tried to play against Serena and have you ever won yes no you never tried to Has Alexis ever played Serena in tennis play to be clear I not even a little lovey doy match I have never picked up a tennis racket in my life my father God bless him when would come on ESPN would change the channel because he'd be like ah it's a [ __ ] Country Club Sport and love you Dad now I I obviously got smart real quick once I started dating my now wife and I have tremendous respect for tennis tennis is a great great sport but for my entire I mean childhood into adult life I thought it was a [ __ ] hobby like country club thing yeah so I never picked up a racket never went to any country I had no idea and never saw a tennis match nothing um now look I built a ten Court in the backyard Olympia practices on it a couple times a week I've since picked up a racket to like gently hit balls back to Olympia yeah but I am not stupid and and I will say this she asked she invited me for a lesson she was we were still talking and she at some point was like hey you know what I never do this but I'd be happy to like give you a few pointers or something and like give you a lesson and I said absolutely not and she was actually kind of offended because she's like do you know who I am like I told you I don't just do this for from Serena Williams you turn it now are you insane and I said I I said that is the most rational thing I could do because now I didn't tell her this part in the back of my head I thought if this doesn't work out for the rest of my life I can be the only person on the planet who said that they turned down Serena Williams for a tennis lesson I mean that it's just that's the move that's the ultimate flex and so thankfully uh no I'm not I don't I don't I don't play tennis that's not okay guys right now we are going to do Alexis's big four I want to know give me your top four favorite athletes of Alexis’ Big 4 athletes of all time all time top four favorite athletes of all time top four big four okay all right so I was actually named after a Nicaraguan boxer named Alexis aruo and he was a multi-weight champion I got to put I got to put Alexis in there a lot it's not easy for us dudes out here carrying that name but we wear it proudly and shout out to Alexis aruo um my father I grew up in a football household I would have to say art monk was the guy he was a wide receiver for the Washington at the time Redskins we went to Canton to go see him get inducted to the Football Hall of Fame this guy was not flashy he was not he had the receptions alltime receptions lead for a minute there but um he did the work he he was just a great human on and off the field by all accounts and just just did the work and I every guy can tell you one of those moments when you've seen your father cry for the first time that's not like a funeral or a wedding or something and usually it's sports related and being at Canton while the entire crowd was chancing it's about time because we skins fans believed he should have been inducted way sooner okay okay for like five minutes when they introduced him wow and and it was this moment I remember looking over my dad and he's getting all emotional about it he's like yeah it's about time yeah and it was just it's one of those things that just always sticks with you um sea Taylor um from the U uh he was also born in 1983 when he was murdered it I remember where I was my dad called me um just he was such a tremendous talent I literally have so I've got my Dropbox folder of petty screenshots can't get over that and then I have another Dropbox folder of just Shawn Taylor highlight videos wow and so if I have a tough board call or a big presentation or any that like big speaking gig whatever where I just need a little bit extra energy you know before I come out the tunnel I'm watching Shawn Taylor highlight videos it it just oh there are matches I'll never forget um my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer the day uh we played Monday net football against the Cowboys and one of the worst days of my life right getting that news and and I just had to get myself in front of a TV to try to take my mind off that we were down 14 nothing anyway skins came back with two touchdowns back toback deep passes Mark Brunell who is not a he doesn't have a great arm but he got it done I think it was tatana both times but before the game ended Shawn had this amazing hit on Patrick kraton it should have been red to Fumble because he made two steps check the tape but when that ball came out and I was at a bar at the time and Boston just drunk off my ass I was just shouting and it's Boston so no one there is watching as a Skins fan screaming at the TV because Shawn came when it mattered clutch with those just these hits he would put on people um so I I feel a deep deep deep connection to Sean so um for I got I got to say Serena obviously how I going to say I was waiting I was I mean that was look I am I am my wife's biggest fan you could even say a groupy and and I'm proud of that love that the the fifth one though you know what shout out to Gabby who we're doing this uh Track event with Gabby Thomas she's going for gold y'all better be cheering for she is very fast and and by all accounts front runner to win the 200 meter uh at Paris and and then obviously she'll be at athlos New York so can't wait for that well I want to say thank you so much for joining my podcast my pleasure this was amazing we were in France I said I got a podcast he's like let's do it we made it happen we're La this we got we pulled cards we pulled CS I have a new hobby he on Ved this is going to be great I thank you so much for joining us of course thank you thank you so so so so much my pleasure all right now y'all already know what it is it's it's time for fly's big four these are the top four things Flau’jae’s Big 4! Music updates that's been on my mind lately everybody want to know how my new EP Best of Both Worlds is doing when am I going to drop an album when am I going to drop some more videos and y'all it's coming it's all coming let me tell you the project is doing so well um I think we had like a million streams and like on the first day on Spotify on the project like cuz I dropped you know different songs on the project so in accumulation it it was like a million streams on the project it was totally totally totally insane um I can't believe it I'm so thankful for everybody that's been listening it's going crazy like I think a lot of people like they came for the Lil Wayne track but then they roll through the whole project and was like oh no it's no skips I'm getting a lot of no skips on this project and I'm not just saying that you can go check the internet it's B it's everywhere everybody saying flj no skips it's all on Twitter it's all on Instagram it's everywhere it's not it's not just me saying it all right now music videos I literally shot a video for every song on this project except for legendary flows which is going to be coming soon with a little surprise but I shot a video for every song on the project I got the perfect timing video out right now I got the karma video out right now ain't my fault is out right now popet is out right now that's four videos y'all can go watch last but not least the album y'all I'm about to go into basketball season I'm not going to lie so I'm not my focus is not going to be on the album I know that's what y'all want but I'm thinking about talking to the team about a Best of Both World Deluxe you know what I'm saying drop a couple songs on the deluxe and then drop for my fans again y'all know I dropped my first mixtape call for my fans and I'mma do for my fans again for my fans too so y'all be on the lookout for that hopefully I get to drop it on my birthday November 3rd where my Scorpio's at somewhere in the comments um but yeah I'm I'm so glad that y'all really listening to the music my Spotify listeners went up like 300% so you know y'all listening and y'all standing I appreciate that keep sharing the music keep piping up to it I appreciate y'all number two my time on the rap game I really really really really love talking about this because people still know me from the rap game like people come up to Flau’jae’s time on the rap game me this day like y'all I was 12 on the rap game I'm 20 now people still come to me like oh my God fly you fly from the rap game I'm like bro I don't even got the same face like like how do y'all even like like what like but like my time on a rap game that was some of the best times ever maybe I should get Jermaine de PRI on the podcast that could be super dope I ain't gonna lie I'm G make that call make that call but look my time on a rap game was special man like I always tell people when I lost the rap game that was the biggest W for me because when I walked out that studio I was sad I was crying told my mom like I was so sad my mom told me like you'll be back and then so I went in my room for like a month straight and I was just writing every day I was writing every day just sad like heartbroken like trying to just write that my heart out and get better next thing you know the next couple of months I got a call from America's Got Talent and they said we saw you on the rap game game and we love your story bro and I was like wow like and then it kind of put it in perspective like sometimes your biggest loss could be your biggest W because I took all that pain and that energy and I poured it into my craft and I got better and I was ready for my next opportunity so to say that y'all sometimes a l is a lesson it's not really a loss it's never a loss so man I I I think I want to thank Jermaine de PRI I want to thank Adam score score am I saying that right I want to thank um Lindsay Rush from AG everybody who kind of just invested into my dreams I really really really do appreciate it bro my time on the rap game was unlike anything I grew so much from that show like you got to think it's five kids living in the house me Rosco tally D tronada Nova so I was learning so much from all of them it was amazing time and we was like we was like one of the top TV shows in the world don't get it twisted don't get it confused I think like one time the Masters was on and we was above the Masters in ranking that's the golf thing I don't watch golf I don't know but I'm pretty sure it's big deal and and we were and we were like I think we were number two on the list they were number three so the rap game it's a big deal shout out Jermaine de PRI I appreciate you man oh yeah no let me tell y'all let me tell y'all full circle real quick full circle moment I went back to the rap game Studio the same huls that I left I came in there I played Jermaine depri the project Best of Both Worlds before it dropped and he was like oh you serious he was like oh you don't put that work in he was like o I ain't know my bad so a lot of people saying they Ain know my bad go figure it out go listen to that tape best of world out now so only EP stop calling it an album I know it sounds great but don't call it Al it's a EP all right number three let's get into some basketball everybody want to know what my schedule look like like when my practice schedule is like in the off season I'mma tell yall keeping a 100,000 Getting back to basketball with y'all so like coach Moi she's goat you know what I'm saying and I say that every time and I mean it love that lady to death she she like coach she's the best oh my gosh me going to LSU was the best situation for me because we are doing basketball from August to April August September October November December January February March April it's nine months y'all coach MO is like when those nine months are up y'all go go be with y'all family I'll see y'all when y'all get back and that's like the best thing for me especially me being a rapper cuz I'm able to move and do different things so this summer I was able to I was able to go travel do my music put Best of Both Worlds out and still get my workouts in I was working out with um my trainer wreck at OT when I'm in Atlanta when I go to La I'm working with the guard whisper uh out here in Cali shout out my main man and um when I go to New York I got to get in with Chris brookley we ain't get in yet but when I go to New York I usually just Train by myself but I got to get in with Chris Brooker that's my man but man my my my schedule has just been music basketball music basketball music basketball cuz I feel like you know you got to take a rest but you also got to fine TB like fine TB and I'm a real competitor I don't want nobody outworking me so I'm always working even when I don't show it I don't really try to show me doing a work in a gym cuz I feel like bro like you going to see it on the floor when it come out like you know what's going on but when when the season come I'mma start putting your face cuz the work ethic Immaculate so all my little kids out there y'all got dreams y'all want to chase y'all got two dreams three dreams whatever y'all could chase them y'all just got to work hard at both and that's what I do all right all right all right and y'all let's get into the last one Flau’jae fav fan moments question number four the big four my favorite moments with my fans I just had one of the dopest interactions in the world um if y'all don't know Serena Williams daughter her name is Olympia beautiful young girl the the daughter of the goat Alexis who was on the show today she is such a sweet little girl and I was able to sign my jersey and give it to her and y'all just to see her reaction how she was looking like when I went back and looked at the video but really in the moment bro she was so excited and I was like like it's different because like she don't she her mom is Serena Williams but to her that's just Mom like but to me Serena Williams like that's Serena Williams like but me to her is like oh my God that's F you know what I'm saying so that just shows the inspiration and how how it transcends through generations and how women sports is so important women sports are so important me seeing Venus me seeing Serena go out there and do that thing there that inspired me to play with confidence one Serena was one of my one of my definitely Inspirations of just being like a conf Confident Woman a confident black woman at that so to be able to be a role model for her daughter and somebody that she looked up to looks up to it just it means so much to me like it's always dope having interaction with my fans but like that moment was really special to me it just goes to show like we have to inspire these kids out here and little things could change and pivot like it could pivot in somebody's whole journey so I'm thankful to be able to do that um y'all know me y'all know I love my fans it don't matter where I'm at it don't matter what I'm doing if a fan me to stop and take a picture I'm stopping to take a picture I might say hurry up real quick but I'm going to do it so the interactions I have with y'all is just amazing I love y'all I appreciate y'all and I love y'all how y'all love me big F thank y'all so much for watching that is another episode of Best of Both Worlds
