what's up everybody this is Brian Burley wanted to give you a review of the Ronald Reagan movie appropriately titled Reagan I saw it on the opening night which was this past Thursday um just want to go over a few things give you my overall thoughts uh some things that I wish the movie had but probably realistically couldn't have had um so let's get started uh firstly the movie is awesome uh it starts off a little slow because it has to introduce you know Reagan's background it Dives deep into his childhood his family how his dad was an alcoholic um it also dives into how important his mother was in his life and and it kind of touches on that a few times throughout the movie it goes into communism and how uh Reagan really even when he was an actor fought against communism and obviously he did it when he was a president it does that so well on the movie it doesn't um overstay its welcome it it's very accurate from what I've read I know Dennis Quaid did a great job as Reagan and he did a lot of research on Reagan's life and it shows in the result in the end product here in the movie uh if there's any noise in the background I apologize I'm actually out in Oregon about to go to a friend's wedding but anyways one thing that was a huge problem that I had with the movie was the CG uh the daging or the Aging for that matter of the characters I felt like when they had Dennis Quaid play an older Ronald dragan it looked really great even though obviously they were trying to make him look older his face was a little bit more filled out but when he was younger and for other characters as well I won't do any spoilers here it just seemed like there was like that generic filter that we all have on our phone where it makes everything really foggy and fuzzy looking and takes out the detail of the face and there's a close-up moment where it really goes into Reagan's face or Dennis quid's face and it just it lacks a lot of detail and you can tell it's CG and it's not as uh not as well done as you would like uh but that's just a nitpicky thing that's you know a very small thing the movie touches on most of Ronald Reagan's highlights of his career there are some things that are left out that I like uh Ronald Reagan spoiler alert is my favorite President of all time even though I wasn't alive when he was president just everything that he stood for his public speaking his accomplishments um and how he really set the Republican Party onto A New Path he was my favorite President um I like Trump as well and I actually like you know the humor of George W bush while I don't like all the wars we got into I did like the humor and how it felt like he was a very real person U all right but off on that tangent the movie does a good job of jumping into almost nearly every highlight of Reagan's presidency and and a lot of his life it goes into his acting career and how that was kind of floundering it goes into his presidency and that's where um and there might be some spoilers throughout all this I mean it's kind of a given that of course they're going to go into his presidency and his acting career if you've seen the trailer or if you know anything about Ronald Reagan but there's this this part that's missing that bugs me obviously the assassination is a big part of Ronald Reagan's life and that's why it was such a big deal that Donald Trump had that assassination attempt where he got shot in the ear because that's such a rare thing to see happen and then to live through it it does a really great job of going through that assassination but if you guys remember there's this clip of Reagan he's speaking in front of a large audience and I think I believe it's a kid pops a balloon and it goes pop and Reagan doesn't really even stop in the in the speech he just says you missed me and everybody starts laughing there's of course the debate moments that we all know about that made Ronald Reagan you know historic and and rememberable those are touched on but there are some things like that moment where Reagan says you missed me that I would have liked to see in the movie now not a lot of people know that that moment but if if you go back and watch it that's pretty awesome uh there's a a big deal was made about the Challenger space shuttle um exploding and Reagan postponed his State of the Union at the time that's not touched on in the movie which I feel like it's kind of a potentially a missed opportunity but maybe it just didn't have a lot of relevance in the grand scheme of what they were trying to accomplish I mean there is the Cold War and there's you know this thought of having what was it Star Wars essentially and and it jumps into that really in depth but it doesn't actually go into a lot of detail in terms of like what he does as a president in terms of state of the unions it could have gotten an extra layer but the movie's almost two and a half hours so I don't blame the producers for not wanting it to be that long the ending of the movie is very emotional I will say that the movie is in general is a very emotional movie with exception the beginning like I said it starts slow and that's for everybody to understand Reagan's background which I understand but the ending is very sad there's a few sad moments throughout the movie Dennis qu like I said he just did a topnotch acting job in this and I haven't seen him really in anything I don't even know last time I know he's in Meet the Parents and he's known for that but he's a really underrated actor really uh is there anything else I want to talk about there's there's just I just highly suggest that you give it a l that you give it a try take your friends and your family it's a historical movie in a lot of ways it talks about what many people consider you know one of the brightest moments in the last 50 years of our country and it's actually the basis Reagan is the basis for what Trump tried to campaign on if you didn't know make America great again is actually Ronald Reagan's campaign slogan and Trump took it and used it and ran with it obviously it wasn't as front and center of Ronald Reagan's um presidency or campaigning not as much as morning uh it's morning again in America which that doesn't even get really touched on that much in in the movie and once again they can't go into everything for an hour otherwise this movie would be longer than the Titanic and no one wanted that it was already about the right length if it would have been any longer it would have probably overstayed its welcome so it'd be interesting to see if they come out with a DVD and if there's any if there's any deleted scenes of things that maybe that I'm mentioning or things that you guys can think of that should be in the movie that are not there's overall one thing that I do really enjoy about the movie that I've taken uh when I when I attended USC I took a political science course here and there the movie touches on the 1976 primary with Gerald art Ford and how Ford ended up beating Reagan and Reagan was kind of the favorite in that primary and then the movie characterizes it that way I think that little piece of history people don't realize that period of time from 70 to 80 is did so much to kind of change the trajectory of our country obviously JFK passes away then you have um Lyndon Johnson and that whole debacle or he's not going to run for reelection and then you have the terrible um presidency of Jimmy Carter in there you have Nixon you know making a comeback and then having to resign and give it to Ford Ford would have never been a president and then you know you look at history and Reagan would have been president no matter what at one point whether it was 76 or 80 or maybe even 84 if he had to wait another four years the movie does a really good job at talking about that and I've ran for office and I've had my my losses so I can kind of kind of resonate because nothing when you run for office nothing hurts more you never get over the loss I know that Derek Jeter talks about I think it's the 2001 World Series losing to the Marlins and Kobe talks about losing to the Pistons and the Celtics when you're so competitive and you want something so bad you could win five or six elections or you know you could win a big election way down the road but that one that you lost kind of is stays with you forever so I do want to just suggest that you give it a watch I've been going for a while while here it looks like it's been about 10 minutes I will post this on my YouTube channel I encourage you to share your thoughts your opinions about the movie Reagan uh starring Dennis Quaid put your thoughts in the comments I'd love to go back and forth I'm sure there's something I forgot that really was important to me about the movie but um like I said I'm actually driving while I'm recording this so I just wanted to put some thoughts out there share those and I'd love to have yours thank you please like subscribe and share this video and have a great day
