hello AA greetings from Toronto where I was lucky enough to see this at Tiff last year and I have to tell you it was one of my top films I loved it um congratulations it's beautiful um and very poignant but you wrote this with these three Powerhouse actresses in mind what did you see in each one of these special ladies and thinking yeah they're going to be perfect for this film it it was really what I heard more than even what I saw like I I I wrote for a very very specific Rhythm and I felt the rhythms of these characters lent themselves I start hearing Carri Coon's voice and I I I knew them enough that I I knew their voices whether through their work or through you know personal you know through meetings them in in real life um and it just lent themselves that their their their the rhythm of their voices really lent themselves very very clearly to me as that can keep type of speed the type of conflict uh how things would revolve how thing where people would pause like it just felt very very clear that they were if I think about them and just in terms of how they use their instrument of their voice this was this was the story I wanted to tell do you find that when you're working with an actor and you've told them off the top okay I wrote this with you in mind do they approach it a little differently because they feel maybe they have more pressure to impress you and make you happy what you had in Your Vision I I never have done that before and I definitely dread because I think at least I think about if somebody came to me saying I wrote this for you I'd go what we what makes you think that you know me you know or like it just feel it feels pretty intimate to say I wrote this with your mind um yeah but it it was the truth in this case I just had to so it wasn't so much I felt that they were going to respond and try to make me happy in some way it was just like it felt like a little bit of a risk being honest but I needed to I needed to come up very very clear because I was going straight from writing the script once I got to a good place going straight to them it wasn't a case where I was going to producers and putting the film together and figuring out the financing it was going straight directly to them and let's start this Foundation together and let's hold on to each other as we figure out how to make this film and when we can make this film yeah um to me you know I'm watching it and I go man I could see this on the Broadway stage like it just had such a play feel to it and you did shoot in very close quarters in this apartment building in this apartment what was that like um you know just trying to get around each other did that cause everyone to become closer and to have that kind of environment like it like I say almost like a play yeah we you know we shot this film with no press announcement with no it was really very very important for everything to be offline and be off the grid as much as possible so we're shooting in Lower Side but we're all in a in you know there's 50 60 of us uh scattered throughout one uh complex on the lower side and we were I think because we were so in such a small space where really just like didn't exist outside like there was no uh Paparazzi there was none of that stuff that I know with with with uh with Talent this this acclaimed it can really easily come but if felt like we existed in our own space and we were left alone to work I really wanted this film to exist once it actually existed and that came down to just being in this one place I wanted the I wanted the apartment to be a real real important uh the real apartment I wanted the walls to be something that we're going to deal with and I wanted to shoot on film to kind of embrace these choices to go okay we have a limited amount of time we have a limited amount of space we're also going to have a Lim limited amount of stock to be able to shoot an ability to shoot this film yeah we all grieve differently ASA and for sure we've got these three sisters who have their each one of their own special approaches I wanted to know which sister you related to oh I I shift into each of those sisters all the time I mean that that's the the I think the thing that I I care about them so much is that I I really relate to each of them and I understand where they're coming from and I can see how much that they ultimately are feeling because I I I I feel similar to them yeah well like I said it's a beautiful film thank you for bringing it to Toronto we want more of your films here you know that that was a that was a great that was just one of the best experiences I've ever had at a a film festival just you know because nobody knew about the film and just that first screening just sitting back there with my wife and feeling a connect was uh something I'm gonna hold on forever a good to hear well thank you so much have a wonderful weekend and best of luck with this it is beautiful really I loved it so much thank you thank you
