of best mid size employ Is. Only one other North Carolina
university made the top 100. And only two other North
Carolina employers made it there. This achievement
reflects the over all working environment Western
Carolina provides its students, faculty and staff
. Consider that. That makes a big difference. Also want to

student is selected to deliver remarks to

submissions. Committee receives entries from
remarkable students and is faced with the difficult task
of selecting a speaker. Thank you
for your hard work in choosing dynamic and energetic student speaker
for this year's spring commencement
ceremony . The student selected is graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in forensic
anthropology, minors in biology from WCU's
arts and sciences. During this student's time
Saturday WCU they volunteered with campus rock ministry , they also were a member of
alpha lamb today delta and finished their degree
in three years . The Western Carolina community is proud to
congratulate this student on achievements and all those we
know await them in the future. So, graduating Catamounts,
faculty and staff esteemed family and
friends welcome Madison Dixon to the podium.
≫: [Applause. ] ≫: Before I yield the macro phone I would like to
present this black on behalf of WCU in to Madison commemorating her
selection as 2024 springs commencement speaker.
≫: [Applause. ] ≫: For many of us, today
started out like any other day. We woke up. Hopefully ate breakfast, got
dressed and showed up to school. But this day, unlike any other
day, marks the rest of our adult life. Right. We did it,
didn't we? We got our degree, had the
college experience, and now we get to move onto bigger and
better things. Maybe for some this is true. But today, I wanted to talk to
you all about how untrue this statement is. Today, doesn't function as a
stopping point or even a turning point. It serves as a
unique merging point taking all that we have learned
and shared and experienced during our time here at WCU and allowing this to shape our
futures. The rest of our lives may start today, but that doesn't mean we have to cut
ties with our past. We get the opportunity to show
the world what it means to be a Catamount. So how do we do
that? To preface let's go back to
when we last sat through a graduation
speech for those of us who are able. When
COVID-19 hit the U.S. I remember how quickly things
fell apart . Spring semester ended early
and getting accustom to Zoom meets were more important than
prom. Was stripped away. We felt cheated. To those who
graduated earlier or later, I am sure you felt the same
way. Then there were lingering thoughts of the future. How
will I ever get to college? Will my college experience be
just like everyone else's? What is my career going to look
like? These fears were ever present
throughout the subsequent years. Even when we got to Western
things didn't feel the same. At first. But growth was slow and
gradual. We returned to our own kind of normal . Isolation turned to public
separation, then masks and today we are finally able to
embrace the calm after the storm. Now, I would like you
to remember some of your fondest memories during
enrollment at WCU. Did you join a club or sports
team? Maybe you got to learn a new hobby or skill unique to the mountain region.
What about Greek life, I am sure many of you
worked hard for our cap stones. WCU
fostered educational pro west for sure. We also spent time with friends
bottled and new swells club and class
member, gym and lab partners, tutors and roommates . The list goes on. Now that
I think about it, haven't we been able to embrace the
college experience just like everyone else? Despite the initial add
adversity , participating in our community as each of us has
desired . I for one enjoyed the
freedom of attending conferences in person again. Safe to say we as a collective
student body have gotten the full college experience. We have made memories, had fun,
gotten our degrees and lived through
first drudges of our adulthood just like everyone else, right. To be honest, this statement is
also far from true. While we may have been able to
overcome the challenges of the past, overcoming something
doesn't make it disappear. Our past still exists and what
we went through still happened. But what we
have that everyone else doesn't is not surviving a crippling disaster,
it is the resilience , determination and sheer will
power of the human beings able to survive such a disaster. I would like you all to take a
look at how many people sit here today and not just the
students . Haven't we all made it this
far ? Despite the loss T suffering
the isolation and fear, have we all not harbored strength, exercised
dedication and earned the right to sit here and celebrate
today? For us students we share more in common than a
university to call home. We share more than academic
courses , dormer to hallways or even a
favorite on campus restaurants. What we have the strength of
fighters having battled first a pandemic and its aftermath then learning how to
become independent, balance a professional
schedule, dedicate responsibilities unlike others
before, survive the hardships that come with
leaving home and being able to sit here today, ready to
graduate . Ready to take everything you have learned from your past,
your lessons and your victory and apply them to the wide
waiting world. The world that is excited for
you. I would like you to think back to this morning as we did
in the beginning. Day seemed to have started like any other. But in reality, it didn't.
Most people wouldn't wake up excited or nervous as you may be to prepare for
the ceremony commemorating your fighting spirit. Most days
would conclude as a memorial to usher in the birth of the next.
Unlike today, which marks the incorporation of the experienced and that yet to
have been embraced into an anticipated future. We don't celebrate today as the
typical college experience. We celebrate today as the
Catamount experience . Day when our mountain home sends us off into the world and
rejoices at another generation's success. I wonder how different today
would look without us not having been here. How many new faces we would
have never met, how our degrees obtained
through the determination and fortitude of a warrior. We have earned such a unique
experience, each one of us, that I believe wouldn't
have been possible anywhere else . Our classwork alone has
proven the value of the college education. However, by being a
Western Carolina student, we are able to represent the pride
that comes with it. When we leave today, others will see
the accomplished powerful individuals we have become. We have the privilege to say
yes, I am strong . Yes, I have been through battle after battle and come out
victor you. I have come home different than the rest. I have exceeded every
expectation and blossomed into the personally dreamed I
could be. I have become a Catamount. So I would like to send you off
with this: As the apostle Paul wrote to Romans we also glory
in our sufferings because we know suffering produces
perseverance, perseverance character and chacialtion hope. Hope does not put us to shame.
Have no shame Catamount. Stand all the, Tell-all, and
strife to be the exception. Thank you.
≫: [Applause. ]
≫: Thank you Madison for your
thoughtful remarks and congratulations on your
graduation today. It is always a joy to hear from

of you starting out in the fall of 2020, is particularly special
as you chose to come to Western Carolina
University in the middle of a once in a century pandemic . While many people chose to
wait it out, you chose the more difficult pathed
and came anyway. You covered your nose. And
wore your mask. Every day. Because that's what we were
asked to do . You social distanced and
stayed six feet apart in classrooms and across campus
because that's what we were asked to do. You came and you didn't enjoy .

success. Each of you are likely to leave WCU better off financially than
many of your peers across North Carolina and
