boy we got a movie to talk about today now
this movie is brought To Us by Lee Daniels and who would have known that last year's Exorcist
believer which was supposed to be a trilogy but end up getting scrapped because of how bad that
movie was that we would end up getting a sequel in the form of this movie now is that a good thing
or a bad thing we'll be discussing that and I'll just say this if you have seen Tyler Perry's
divorce in the black that came out just a couple months ago and you thought that opening scene
was ridiculous let me tell you something this movie said hold my be we'll be discussing that and
much more in today's spoiler-free review of the [Music] Deliverance now before we get this review
started please leave your thoughts on this film once you've seen it in the comments below
what did you like what didn't you like let's talk about it all in the comment section below
Loosely based on true events the Deliverance follows a family living in a home in Indiana who
St to discover strange demonic occurrences that convince them in the community that their house
is a portal to hell so I consider Lee Dames to be a very successful and talented filmmaker producer
writer which such a claim films and projects such as the paper boy the Butler and the hit TV show
Empire and of course 2009's precious which earned him an Academy Award nomination for best director
and best pitcher Ali Daniels is mostly known for doing dramas and this is his first time dabbling
in the horror genre and not just any horror movie but this is a supernatural one at that and I do
have to do a little bit more research but as I mentioned up top this is Loosely based on a true
story of Latoya Ammons who was a single mother who claimed that her house was haunted and that her
children were being possessed by evil spirits and that she needed a Deliverance which in other words
means an exorcism so is this movie a spooky good time or does this film need to go straight back to
Hell well we'll be discussing that in this review starting off with my positives I'm going to come
out and say I'm going to be honest with you all this movie has a ton of problems from the pacing
it did not need to be almost two hours there's some structuring issues there's some unexplained
plots but I would be lying to you off I didn't tell you how entertained I was while watching
this and this is to me a quintessential bad good movie as I was watching this movie and after it
ended to no surprise but the film's mainly stars were all great in my opinion from Andrew day to
Glen close to anen New Ellis Taylor and after years of beefing with one another Lee Daniels
and Mo'Nique are back working together look no matter how bad this movie got at points the women
in this film 100% put this movie on their backs they're carrying this movie like they are 100% the
anchors of this movie starting off with Andrea day who plays our main character ebony now she's
a mother of three and she's holding down the family because her husband's all fighting the war
and she's also helping her mother who's dealing with cancer ebony is someone who you can't stand
that points in this film but you get to see that she is actually trying to do right at least
in her eyes by her kids and helping her mom but she unfortunately struggles with addiction to
alcohol and her own past demons she's dealing with all while trying to stop this demon from killing
her family now I first knew of her as a singer and then I saw her in 2021s the United States
versus Billy Holiday which was also directed by Lee Daniels which she was great in that film
but she's even better in this truly a great performance and her back and forth and chemistry
with Glen close is outstanding which Speaking of Glen Close now I haven't seen all of her movies
or TV show appearances but I've seen my fair share whether it be Fatal Attraction her is ketta laille
her in the great show damages but even though I haven't seen all her projects I feel confident
and saying that you have never seen Glen close in a road like this before Alberta is one of the
most interesting and memorable characters of this year for me I want to see Halloween costumes of
her I want to see cosplays of her more importantly I want to see her memorable lines from this
film on a t-shirt give me all the memes what a hilarious but fascinating character and not to
give too much away but yes she is a white woman who has a mixed child and definitely has a thing
for Blackman and has a very toxic relationship with her daughter but she's found God but that
won't stop her from calling you a [ __ ] I'm telling you all she is a scene Stiller and there
is a scene that takes place later on the film and the way she delivers that line had me laughing for
10 minutes straight I'm telling you all this is a home run of a performance by Glenn clo now while
supporting characters weren't in this film a ton but with their limited screen time they were
still important to the story starting off with anen new Ellis who plays a reverend who knows
a lot more than mea ey again she's not in it a lot but she's one of the best actors alive and
she does a lot more than what she's given twitch and gear talking about Mo'Nique who plays Cynthia
who's a social worker in this film now she plays a lot for the laughs in my opinion in this movie
but when the film asked for her to give you more dramatic moments she landed those especially
with the particular scene she has with Ebony's character which talks about what it means to be
a parent that scene there really hit home on the emotional beats now as far as the younger actors
in This film I thought they were fine they served the purpose of this narrative and notably you have
Caleb who we all know from strer things as Lucas he's okay he has a a dramatic scene in this film
I thought he was able to show his acting chops and there's also a scene later in the film that
kind of has him being more physically demanding I thought he kind of nailed in that moment the
daughter in the film is okay and then you have the younger k kid who's like a N9 or 10 he goes
by the name of Andre he's targeted the most by this demonic entity and the kid was fine I thought
again all the kids did the best that they could I thought some of the direction wasn't the greatest
I thought some of the line delivery wasn't the greatest but again the kids were we're fine in
this film now speaking to one of the more standout elements to me about this movie was the film legit
has a very compelling and interesting story about this family's trauma I rarely ever buy into these
modern horror movie families and deal into their drama and what they got going on or even B into
them as characters in their situation for example we had a horror film that came out by blumhouse by
the name of night swim which I did not care about that Family at all this movie had the opposite
effect on me where I honestly cared more about the story with Ebony and her mom and how she was
as a mother and how we got to see that play out in this film ebony isn't a good mom at points of this
movie and it stems from her upbringing and the situation that shaped her as a kid that you find
out later in this movie and it you understand her a bit differently once you discover what happened
to her so kudos to Lee Daniels who does what I think he does best as a director which is focusing
on the human Story the family drama diving into what it means to be a single mom and having a
white mom and that complex relationship and I thought that the drama was easily to me head and
shoulders the best part of this film now lastly you may be wondering is this a scary movie is this
a legit horror movie that will get people excited well I've said this many times on the channel and
I will continue to say this that when it comes to horror movies what scares me might not scare you
and vice versa like I think horror is maybe the most subjective genre besides like comedy cuz
we all have different sense of humor but when it comes to the horror I will say to me it it it
wasn't that great and we'll talk about that in my criticisms but I will say the third act had some
good moments of tension and some good body effects and some good horror tropes that I really enjoyed
and it definitely pays homage to some of the more better possession films such as the Exorcist
and also 2013's the the conjury now Switching gears and getting into my cons but I want to
get the nitpicks out of the way first again these are things that you might not have noticed
or things you didn't care about but there's little things like timing referring to like okay you
established they just moved to Indiana but yet there's some bullies up the street that's picking
on Nathaniel and you know him and you know them and it's like how y'all know each other if you
just moved into town like little things like that there's a structuring issue like there's a moment
in the film where things are strange going on in the house but we go from things are strange to now
got a demon in the basement it goes from zero to 100 really fast and the Bild to that didn't work
for me and there's other moments where I feel like the cohesion was missing there's a flow that just
felt off and there's little little details that kind of bother me again little nitpicks doesn't
affect my score or My overall experience it's just things that I noticed while watching this film
again I have a lot of them but those are kind of some that come to mind but getting into my actual
criticisms things that do affect my score things that kind of bothered me while I was watching this
film now like I mentioned earlier I'm going to do some more research on the true story cuz I do find
it fascinating but from what I was able to find I feel like the film missed an opportunity to really
explore this idea that what if this was actually all made up now once you see the film and of
course if you just saw the trailer the film takes a stance like all the stuff that's happening took
place it was real there was a demon in the house and there was all crazy stuff going around but
again doing my little research and watching some of the interviews before I actually watched or
after I watched the film psychologists and people that was involved some people kind of made it seem
and doctors kind of made it seem that Latoya may have made this up like she was making her kids
think that there was a demon in the house and I thought that that's an interesting story and and
the film kind of plays on that but then it takes a stance that no this all actually happened and
again I thought that the film could have been more compelling more interesting if they would have
told that line better where it's just like is this real did that happen but like I said the foer flag
on the ground say no this happened but I feel like it was a Miss opportunity to maybe Explore More
of is she lying is this manipulative situation because as I mentioned earlier ebony is a mother
that has her issues and she has her ways about her but again there was a missed opportunity to
really explore that to that line of what was real and what wasn't real which sticking to the idea
of the narrative that was going on in this film and how the film tackles the race of it all right
with Hollywood there are tropes that we've seen a bazillion times that I just kind of get tired of
at this point like there's a stereotypical there's a single mom it's a broken home there's addiction
going on there's white people people not listen to the black people so they're tropes that I kind
of roll my eyes at but then in the back of my head I'm thinking well this is Loosely based on true
event so they're probably taking some elements and creating some other things like there's different
names there's different things that went on that didn't happen in the real story but going back
to like the race and the tropes of it all and how Hollywood plays to the black stereotypes I just
felt like the film missed some of the Nuance like we touch very on the surface level Lee Dames
touches on black mom not being listened to by white doctors her having a white mom and her mom
being into black people black men in particularly it's just like it's very service level and I
feel like there was more opportunity to explore the nuances in those relationship the nuances
in the social commentary how black people are looked at when it comes to how they treat their
kids you know social services so a lot of surface level things that I can appreciate them at least
bringing it to the Forefront but let's explore those things a little bit more that I feel like
the film didn't do as much as it could have in my opinion now going back to my comment of this being
a good bad movie but speaking to the bad of it all the dialogue while it was hilarious they're not
meant for comedy most of the time the film takes itself way too seriously and it undercuts some of
the tone and attention was going on because of how the film was written again the actors can only do
so much to make things feel real feel grounded or have a gravitas to it but unfortunately I blame
some of the direction but also the script to being poorly EXE it now to me the weakest part of this
film is the actual scares the horror Department was very lacking to me in this film again it's
very subjective but I think once you see the film you'll know what I'm referring to like is this a
joke what I mean by that is the first two halves when it comes to the horror and the scary and
the trops of like a kid staring at the corner or bumping his head against the wall or bumping his
head against the door it's played like a parody to me like it's almost felt like I was watching
a scary movie I'm not talking about a scary movie I'm talking about the scary movie the parody
that the Wayne brothers did like it's played like a joke and for me when those moments happen
that are meant to be serious the tension and the scares once again were undercut by the actor's
reaction by the direction by the dismissiveness of what was going on and again just felt like
one bit comedy now yes most of your possessing supernatural horror movies follow a certain path
a certain narrative a certain pattern so I don't blame this movie for copying and pasting but
it all comes down to execution and to me you can tell that Lee Daniels isn't comfortable with
handling horror again this film has great drama but minus some silent moments in the last 20
minutes the horror beats were so bad and so unintentionally funny to me now if you all have
seen the Amazon Prime show by the name of them which had two seasons and season two just came
out a couple months ago and I covered it on the channel check it out but speaking to them season
one if you guys haven't seen that basically just a quick rundown there's a black family that moves
to Compton and there is a demonic entity in their home and and I won't give too much away but you
find out that this entity targets black families and bringing it back to this film this movie makes
it seem like the entity is in this one house but it seems to be in a black community and it seems
to only target black people but it doesn't really explain the why and the what's and what's it doing
like there's a lot of unexplained that was going on that just kind of made it frustrating like
what is the actual goal like yes it's demonic and it just wants Souls but it doesn't it kind
of ignores that element of the story and again thinking about the horror elements things just
happened the horror elements were just so weak and there's a lot of the things that just didn't add
up that didn't make sense and made for some good laughs but cohesively speaking did not work for me
so those are my main pros and cons in my opinion but before I share my final thoughts on the film
and give you all my score and let you know if it's worth checking out on Netflix if you made it to
this point in the video I want to take the time to thank you all hit the like button share your
thoughts on this movie in the comments below and also consider sticking around by subscribing
to the channel overall the Deliverance is the unexpected better version of what the Exorcist
believer was going for with having compelling characters in relationships I was invested in but
unfortunately the Deliverance completely fails on delivering the scares but again I found myself
entertained by the unseriousness of this movie and it gave me some of the best laughs I've had
all year but sometimes bad movie can provide some good times I'm going to give the Deliverance a 2.8
out of five this is one of those rare occasions where I gave a film a low score and listen I was
close to giving it a three out of five because the drama and the acting is really good in this
film like I will give Lee Daniels that but as a horror film it fails the Mark at least for me and
and again it is so I might do a spoiler review for this film because there are just some scenes I
think about the scene in the school and again if you've seen Tyler Perry the the black and divorce
film and that opening funeral scene like that was crazy this this movie tops that like it shits
on that scene you see the film you know what I'm talking about so depending on how well this video
does like the engagement if you guys want to talk about it I might do a spoiler review to talk more
about that scene and some of the comments that was made by Glen clo character we might have to have
a discussion but nonetheless this is again a rare film where I gave it a a low score but I want you
all to watch this because I want to talk about this movie with you all cuz it's it's that bad
that it's that good that I want you all to watch so that's my thoughts on the Deliverance again
2.85 bad horror movie good drama some really good laugh so that's going to be the end of this
video again thank you all for watching it might have a spoiler review keep an eye out for that
but even if I don't thank you again like share comment subscribe you all are awesome stay
safe and I'll catch you all on the next video [Music]
