A member of the NBC 10 family shares his memories of a teacher and coach, a victim of gun violence. Richard Aspinwall was killed in yesterday's school shooting in Georgia. But like a lot of educators, his impact went far beyond the building he taught in. Good evening. I'm Glenn Jones. Zach Miles is one of the producers responsible for our morning news today. He talked to Oscar Margain about Aspinwall and the shocking act that ended his life and the lives of three others. I never thought that I would know one of the victims that just never felt real. And it hit really, really close to home when I found out it was him. Wednesday's school shooting in Winder, Georgia, claiming the life of four people, two teenage students and two teachers, including math instructor and football coach Richard Aspinwall. I just couldn't stop shaking. Zach Miles is one of our producers at NBC 10 Boston. The Georgia native went to Mountain View High School just a few towns over from Appalachia High, where the shooting took place. This was right in my backyard of where I grew up, literally 15 minutes down the road from my hometown, although never as a teacher or coach. 39 year old Aspinwall left a lasting impression on his students before changing schools, him helping out with, like the student leadership organizations. I was part of the clubs like that, like he was always someone that was willing to help out. Zach's college friend, Alex English, ended up working with coach A at Apalachee High, describing to him that horrible day. He was on the same hall where the shooting went down and Coach Aspinwall was in the classroom getting targeted. He was teaching math at the time, and from what I've heard, he stepped in front of the kids to save the kids lives and like, truly died as a hero. Coach a is survived by his wife and two kids. And being remembered by Zach as someone who always believed in his students. The job wasn't about him. Like it wasn't about a paycheck. It wasn't about, you know, getting your summers off as a teacher. It wasn't about any of that. He just really believed in and inspired all
