render yep render raer you're the warning coordinator meteorologist that is a a hefty title let's just kind of clarify what that means in regards to what you do with the National Weather Service and Noah sure I I get that response a lot a lot of people like wow this a really impressive title and I have no idea what that means I well one I'm a meteorologist that's what my background in training is but in this position I'm more of a liaison to anybody outside of our office so whether it's working with emergency managers media Schools public I'm kind of the point person for that in an event like this I tend to do a lot of weather briefings and also a lot of interviews It's Not Unusual to have uh two systems or two you know more than one system in our Hawaiian Waters uh the two named ones that we're taking a gander at are hurricane Gilma and tropical storm Pony and the reason the public should continue to be aware uh first to clarify the differences of a watch and advisory and a warning uh to just kind of break down that at the most basic level a watch means conditions are possible that is more uncertain a warning conditions are expected is more confidence in it occurring and the tropical program we shoot to issue a tropical storm watch 48 hours before the start of winds and then a tropical storm warning 36 hours or so before the start of tropical storm force winds the watch is the time to prepare and get ready for it the the warning there's a 36 hours of lead time so there there's still time that's your your last minute reminder like you better get these preparations done if there's stuff you need to bring in if there's anything you need to clear out drainage wise do that before conditions really start to deteriorate John uh the tendency for the public in any region of the world is when there's a named storm or named weather system unless it says hurricane in the front of it a lot of people just like it'll be fine tropical storm it like it there's that ex Factor where it can tip into a hurricane so uh tropical storm winds rains High surf conditions not to make anyone Panic it's just to be prepared we don't know what the final effects are until they're um happening or they dissipate you know that could happen to that's right the the tropical storm or hurricane reference is just related to the wind speed uh Heavy Rain is another big Hazard so even a tropical depression or Remnant low after its weekend can still bring a lot of heavy rain and cause a lot of flash flooding so there's multiple hazards that people have to be aware of and be concerned about since tropical storm H is uh Rel relatively closer it is moving steadily toward our Hawaiian Islands uh we just had an 11: a.m. update uh what can you share uh about hon tropical storm hon right now H is east Southeast of the islands moving just north of du West it's a a tropical storm right now we expect gradual strengthening o over the next day or two as Winder weakens a little bit and it's over moderately warm water just gradual strengthening is possible that it'll reach hurricane strength as it is located Southwest of the state with were over the next couple days forecasting tropical storm conditions as it passes by south of the islands different hazards to to worry about with Hon one wind not just within the the tropical storm itself that greatest impact there for Hawaii Island uh we also are expecting stronger trade Wis across the rest of the state so we'll have Gusty winds Saturday and more so on Sunday across all the islands with a strong Trade Winds North of the system Heavy Rain is the other concern uh particularly higher rainfall amounts East and Southeast sections of the Big Island rainfall totals 5 to 10 inches possible maybe even higher in localized locations further north uh two to four inches is kind of the maximum forecast for Windward sections but we could get strong you know heavy down bursts of rain in different areas and then the other thing to worry about too uh High Surf and dangerous Seas especially for east facing Shores CH R will put out a a high surf advisory for east facing shores as that surf builds and and that could impact uh multiple Islands uh as the the Seas spread out from the tropical storm and impact us I'm Kathy with a K with 1059 the way of always relaxing favorites talking with John lavender of Noah a National Weather Service uh we are talking about well it's Friday August 23rd 2024 in the 11 amm hour so whenever you're seeing this just to let you know that you can get updates either by checking out Noah um we also have updates uh various links that will'll send you to the National Weather Service at 1059 the wave fm.com stormcenter so this is um tropical storm will met uh braer last name brender what did I you said lavender it rhymes with lavender but it's actually brender earlier I had said it rhymes with and so I just kind of put a GPS pin there ravender it's good that you have a a sense of levity and humor in the midst of all this um people wanting to get all this information that is that's helpful because that's also we're preparing this all this information the predictions is scientific research and it can shift so that's another thing for the public uh some people like to jump all over it and be like but they said it was going to be this it's like well it's good that you're prepared it's good uh John brender a warning coordinator meteorologist with Noah National Weather Service the Central Pacific Hurricane Center uh we talked about tropical storm H and uh can you give us a little bit about hurricane Gilma hurricane Gilma is the one that we're watching for next week yeah Gil is a hurricane right now but it's a little farther north in latitude and we'll be moving over cooler water so we expect Gilma to to gradually weaken over the next several days and as it crosses into the Central Pacific Basin 140 degrees west longitude as it as it moves in it'll be a forecast be a tropical storm and soon become what we call post-tropical it's over cooler water the thunderstorms at the center that give it the energy weaken and and are no longer there so it starts to to spin down and dissipate so even though it is not anticipated to be a tropical Cyclone as it approaches the islands it still could bring another round of heavy rain that part of the forecast is really uncertain because there's a lot of things that can change between now and next week as it approaches but it's one more of those items to to keep an eye on as as the days progress John brender of the National Weather Service um when it comes to these weather events even when it's beautiful weather is it just super fascinating like it started as an unnamed system and now Gilma H you know anything interesting that you're uh that you yourself are kind of giddy about this is uh especially with with h developing we we've been watching it for so long it took a long time to get organized there were a couple different areas that eventually Consolidated together and that's what made communication difficult early on in the week because there is weather information is freely available everywhere and everybody you lots of arm forecasters looking at their favorite computer model and say oh it shows this it shows that but from runto run there's so many changes it's going north of the state it's going south of the state it's going across all the islands that all was dependent upon very initial conditions like hey it's here right here we're going to develop this and bring it this way but you know what next time maybe this other load is the one that's going to develop and this will go a whole different track and a whole different impact so that's where the leadup to the event had been challenging of oh yes there's something out there yeah but don't Focus too much on the GFS or the European model all these different computer models that's where as once it finally Consolidated and developed now we have more confidence in okay there's just this one Center we can track that we can forecast where that goes and that has allowed us over the past couple days to really hone in on those different potential impacts Heavy Rain where the wind's going to be items like that is there a a page on the National Weather Service website that the public at large with no meteor ology background that you feel comfortable suggesting like you know you could start here and you could kind of educate yourself if you're interested or you know just take some courses get you know legitimately certified to become a meteorologist you know if you want to learn about tropical Cyclones hurricanes.gov the website has good educational information there's also educational program called jet stream hosted through Noah that has a lot of information that you can just go through on your own and there's a group through ukar the university Corporation for atmospheric research called Comet which is the C Center for operational mological Education and Training that has a lot of in-depth courses that's it that those are the ones that if you really are weather geek you can dig into those in great detail very cool John braender rhymes with lavender but it's braender uh warning coordinator meteorologist with Noah National Weather Service and in particular we're talking uh hurricane Gilma and tropical storm H um this is again in the 11: am. hour Friday August 23rd 2024 for update so we've got some links 1059 the wave fm.com stormcenter uh and I will release you to the wild maybe we'll talk Story down the line maybe next week when uh if or when Gilma is hanging out hopefully once things down yeah sounds good I'll talk to you about regular weather tell me about the rainbow phenomenon
