Yellow jackets swarm West Virginia amid drought conditions

well it's all the buzz a large number of yellow jackets are expected to be swimming the Mountain State meteorologist Dante Ricky has some news we can use to avoid an aggressive sting well in West Virginia alone hospitalizations are on the rise from these pesky little insects the yellow jackets they are out and about and they seem to be more significant this year quite a bit here on the screen I'll tell you what though we're in the middle of a drought these dry sunny days they really dry up the soil and the ground quite a bit and these Yellow Jackets they're looking for a good drink somewhere too so where do they go well they end up on places that have some sprinkler systems perhaps even your garden where the flowers are they need a little bit of moisture to survive and they'll often swarmm and make their nests in these particular locations like your backyard or out on the soccer pitch for example and the nest can be buried within the ground or in some cases paper nests can be hanging from those structures outside maybe near the pool maybe out on the farm you name it the good news though is there are some ways that you can stay safe inspect those frequently traveled areas around the peak season when Yellow Jackets are most aggressive are right now from late summer and into early fall now the good news is Yellow Jacket colonies rotate during the late fall and winter often abandoning their original Nest so if you find a nest you might just be able to avoid it for a little bit longer however if you have to take one down never hit it during the daytime those bees are very aggressive especially around any light whether it's natural or flashlight as well do it at night time when they're least aggressive if you feel comfortable if you're not comfortable don't touch it at all only use safely controlled Yellow Jacket control label insecticides and the least toxic product available on the line so it's best to just avoid them all together and if you can do it safely with some of these recommendations as well I'm meteorologist Dante Ricky thanks for watching for more of our great weather stories just click here and if you enjoyed that video or learned something new like And subscribe
