weather the rain has picked up a little bit it looks like here right now so yeah get those guys going get Toton going get Malachi going obviously get drones going because he can do the rpos as good as anybody he's playing with a lot of confidence and then they use the Drone attack right he's got those receivers that he can use uh he's got great chemistry with some of those guys obviously so I think he's got a lot of weapons at his disposal there and last but not least got to stop the toan run if they can stop the run force them to throw the football then I think the hok got a great shot to win this game this afternoon hookies are coming out on the field right now that entire offensive units warming up they've got the white helmets on again the white jerseys with the orange pants one of the first times we've seen this combo that I remember the maroon pants have been good to the hookies in the last couple of games they went with those in that Virginia game of the game before it as well Mike coming up here you have a conversation with janen Lane he's one of the guys coming back he's always a good interview I know you talked to him after the game a lot and uh everything how how was that interview and conversation with him he's such a fun kid he always has a smile on his face no never seems like he has a bad day you know he ended up didn't I think he kind of got shut out at UVA didn't have a catch so he's still probably a little bit frustrated in that regard but six touchdowns on the year averaging over 14 a catch and you know 37 I think he had uh catches over the course of the year maybe not quite as much as he had Middle Tennessee but what a great attitude he's so excited about this game about next year about having those guys in that room come back he talks about that burnup to take you inside the locker room for a chat with one of the the Hoke Playmakers this is open mike welcome back uh to our pregame show from the Military Bowl in Annapolis Maryland where I'm joined by wide receiver Jaylen Lane and Jaylen how was your Christmas how have the bowl preparations gone uh you know Christmas was great um yeah we uh kind of did a big meal as a team a lot of our families were there so that was great and you know B preps been going good been practicing really hard it's been great to see the guys come out and you know have this kind of mindset to go in going into a bowl game I heard Santa Claus was a hit oh yeah yeah definitely uh yeah we got some good gifts to this bowl and you know stuff like that so it's been it's been good so the swag was good oh yeah most definitely I'm uh definitely going to be wearing it as soon as I get home so how how nice has it been to been with your brothers for another month oh it's been great you know you always want to make the postseason um you know going uh coming out of the season and the fact that we did has been just a blessing especially those guys who are leaving so it's good to have one more game with them and you guys got a tight room you made that announcement that everybody was coming back that had to make a lot of people happy oh yeah yeah it was a pretty cool deal we did with the video and stuff like that so um yeah I'm excited I know everybody else is excited um you know get a whole another year with the guys with KY basaw everybody's coming back so I think it's going to be pretty cool speaking of excited speaking of your year how was your year you had three in Middle Tennessee Middle Tennessee State very productive years did this one live up to what you'd hop for uh yeah like as a team for sure me personally you know I feel like there's always more you can do um you know just try to never be satisfied but um you know it's been a great year I love it in blackburg I love the fans um just the best atmosphere in college football if you ask me so um yeah it's been a great year from that standpoint so um can't can't complain too much yeah you kind of got banged up a little bit had to miss some time yeah yeah you know you hate missing games luckily it was only um about one and a half games there um you know so you know that's part of the game though you know things like that happen you just got to continue to work through it after you guys were one and three did you think a bowl game was possible oh yeah yeah you never lose Faith especially cuz uh you know when we were one and three you know we still had a lot of conference games to play so you know everything we wanted to do was still on the table um you know we go in the pit we win go in Wake fors we win so like you know we just had to find some momentum and once we did I knew whatever we wanted to do was possible has it been fun kind of relishing the win over UVA the last few weeks oh yeah definitely you know uh going into the game everybody was asking me said I was new you know did I hate UV yet and stuff like that and you know I felt it during the game and it it was definitely a satisfying win for sure to put up that many points on your rival so yeah it was great what concerns you about this uh tane defense that won 11 games oh yeah they uh they're a really solid group they got a great run defense um I think they were top three in the country in takeaway so you know to me that just uh puts in my mind our mind that we got to take care of the ball don't want to give them any um you know easy things interceptions FS anything like that to give them an edge on us so you know we got to take care of the ball and um you know just foul through the elements whatever that may bring have you guys done some extra wet weather work this week oh yeah yeah you know we got the wet ball drill stuff like that so yeah like I said we were prepared for the elements whatever it may be so I feel like um you know so we can come out and put our best play on on tape Jaylen what would uh win number seven mean for this team you know uh you always want to uh go out of a season and going to offseason on a high note so you know like I said 7-6 looks way better than 6 and seven so you know that's just kind of more momentum going into the offseason especially with the same guys pretty much coming back but I've never seen such a a mass of people in these parking lots with the T and the mud you know they're not all paved obviously so yeah it's been some great tailgating going on with the Hoke Nation for sure plenty of tailgating on either side the ponchos are out folks are making making their way inside of the Navy Marine corpse Memorial Stadium here today toan is out of the field in the green helmets and the uh black jerseys black bottoms as well Virginia T is making their way out right now some more of those big guys the linemen of that the specialist and uh some of the skill guys have already been out there for a long time here today we're just happy that as the rain's coming down to that that it's 55° it would be a different game if it was 30° in rain in like this yeah especially for you down on that sideline I just hope you got enough gear down there for you but those jerseys yeah the the uniforms for the those numbers are kind of hard to see from up here so that may be a little bit of a challenge this afternoon but the crowd's fing in rain has picked up I see some raindrops on our Windows which I haven't seen earlier today but um hopefully it won't be too awful bad and we see the flag to our left kind of standing up so the breeze has picked up a little bit uh and hopefully it'll be a nice fast track at least as fast as it can be in these conditions part of it the other part is is going to be that this Virginia Tech Team or this uh two lane team I should say on the other side is kind of in disarray with their coaching staff with their players who's playing what's playing whatever but as coach said at the end of the day they they won the Cotton Bowl last year they pulled out the bull pamphlet and said okay this is what we did this is how we did it and we're going to make sure that we go ahead and go forth and do it again today that's it I mean it's not like rocket science right you got the plan and you know he's got a lot of those same players now yeah they lost a bunch of players but a lot of these players are back and they won 11 games and some of these guys are you know trying to make uh a name for themselves uh obviously with the new coaching staff coming on some of them are in the portal that are still playing so it's kind of just bizarre and weird how this is going to go but you know you expect early on that both teams are going to give it all they got early on and if one gets the advantage over the other one uh that's when you kind of can look out hey they SE and the hes have had 38 quarterback sacks food line feat is a fans here in Annapolis to see their beloved hokey play Tech and two lane getting set to kick things off here on this Wednesday afternoon Tech still riding high after that great victory over UVA and Mike they're Bowling For the First Time under their second-year head coach Brant pry and despite the nasty whether this team this fan base is fired up to be in this bowl game in 2023 how about that Billy on a Wednesday morning at like 10:00 we're out there looking in the parking lots and it's just packed with hokey tents hokey fans all them out there in their ponchos and whatnot and you couldn't be happier for Coach pry the work the time the efforts that they have put in after a one and three start to get these kids to buy in to the program it's great you know the story of of this game is going to be the weather because clearly this is about his nasty weather conditions as you can get it is foggy it is rainy but it's not windy I guess that is a positive Mike and it's it's in the high 40s I mean that's probably what you would expect this time of the year in Annapolis well this the the flag is standing up over there a little bit Billy but um one of those things you just got to play through the elements and uh obviously on a turf field it makes it you know a little bit easier um in that regard so the traction should be good it's just a matter of the wet balls and the gloves how well it work absolutely well hokeys and Tain it has been a long time since the hokeys played to Lane in fact if you remember it that was the game Mike that coach Beamer didn't coach in the game coach was undergoing a procedure at Rowan Oak Memorial Hospital and Billy height was the Hoke's acting head coach that day you know what remember the day before the game I said well who's going to do the pregame interview is it going to be coach height or coach Beamer and Coach Beamer asked the team physician and his cardiologist he said I can do the interview from the bed and I drove to Ronan o with a that was back when we used tape recorders and I interviewed coach Beamer from his hospital bed for the pregame interview and we'll have an interview with Coach pry later the same type of thing right a pregame interview drove back up to blackburg Billy height though coached the game in the Hoke beat too late yeah they sure did I'll remember that no doubt about it Billy it was fun exciting good for we're excited it's uh it's been a great week the kids have had uh had some fun but kept their eyes on the main thing and had good preparation good practices good meetings but uh Military Bowl has been awesome to us the families have enjoyed it a ton so you know now we just got to go win this game for a team for a program for your kids momentum is so important you have the great win over UVA tremendous recruiting day what would a win today mean yeah it just keeps moving the needle in the right direction you know it just pushes it a little harder when you go seven and six and get a nice win and over a really good football team got a couple of starters out both safeties but overall how has B prep been for this team yeah it's been good I've been very proud of the guys I think the preparation's been good they've been locked in at practice you know we haven't had a guy late for a bus or late for a curfew or everybody's been on point and I think they've practiced hard one of the benefits of the Military Bowl being in the DMV is you're able to get some local High School coaches from through throughout the region to come to your practice how important is that oh yeah it's great you know we we're certainly invested in this area from a recruiting standpoint and uh we've had we've had a bunch of coaches at each and every practice we've had we sent you know a formal invitation to them and wanted them to come and uh observe and hang out with us and so it was great to see them all now as for today's game I mean you can kind of feel for the two-lane fans that uh opened their Christmas presence and everybody left and went to Houston for crying out loud I mean it's just so tough they did win 11 games how do you size up uh the team you're facing today yeah it's a good group you know again there's there's quality guys on that roster and they've been well coached for multiple years ton of respect for Coach Fritz and the staff and you know they've been to bowl games they understand that and what that needs to look like from a planning and preparation and you it's hard to win 11 games and they did it so uh this a good football team we're playing the unknown of T Lane specifically with uncertainty at quarterback their top receivers out how disconcerting is that from a x's and O standpoint yeah honestly it goes back to us you know we have to do the 100 level things very very well you watch these bowl games and there's penalties there's turnovers there's miscues there's bad execution I mean sloppy play you know we need to be a team that you know steps the right way and has good pass level and great alignment and good key read and great communication um you know that's what we can control I have a sense that both offensive coordinators are going to try to run it today uh they've got a terrific back hokes have a red hot back and toon how do you size that up yeah I mean you know we'll see what this weather ends up really being like but uh you know obviously our success goes through the Run game when we can run the ball well you know everything starts clicking it's going to be very important for us today all right right size up this match up here it's the final game uh for this group for uh some seniors and whatnot this is the last time we know for sure they're going to put on a tech uniform that makes it emotional regardless of what happens here today how do you see it yeah I mean I think uh for our group you know they they want to take this trophy home uh there's a lot of them in our memorabilia Hall and and they want to contribute to it they want help the Hokies in the return game he was an All-American an all ACC player as a kick returner this year but man when he touches the ball good things happen particularly as the game goes along no doubt about it Bill and he had over 100 yards rushing against UVA 117 had that long run of 46 and you know he returned to kickoff for a touchdown for 94 yards and so he is a versatile guy he can catch the ball out of the back field he can run he can make people uh Miss he can certainly break tackles one of the best in the country at that one of the things that I've noticed about Kiren drones this year and this week in DC around the team hotel and whatnot mik key is all business he is focused getting better he is a gentleman whose purpose and personality seems to be about focusing on winning a football game yeah he's matured so much when the you think about throwing him into that game against Purdue with a couple couple minutes left Bill and how he has developed his game how his confidence is soared each and every rep he's gotten better the game has slowed down for him you know some of the key throws he's made on some of those uh impactful fourth down plays he's just been Dynamite we're going to see two quarterbacks for the other team today for tane Kai Horton who's out of Carthage Texas is a sophomore he's in the transfer portal he will not be playing for Tan next year but he did start this year twice against Southern Miss and against Old Miss not a lot of numbers he threw 62 passes for the season we're also going to see a kid who's a little bit bigger 65 Justin ietta whose track record at tane is great skill but he's been hampered by shoulder injuries the hokes know they're going to see both QBs today they don't know necessarily when and how much each young man will play but they're both big QBs that are starting for Tain as Michael Pratt they're all conference maybe the greatest his quarterback in two late history since this one out yeah unfortunate I was looking forward to seeing him play cuz he put up some incredible numbers got a bright future to Next Level you know you look at Horton and you look at abetta both those guys are about the same size 64 65 220 you just not a lot of experience you know when you look at uh the fact that U Horton numbers you know 31 of 62 he is a 50% passer but just 485 yards limited action three touchdowns and the two interceptions you know they they lost the game against it's Old Miss won the game at Southern Miss so kind of mixed results both of them are young I think the the defensive line the defensive ends uh the secondary I think they're looking forward to getting a chance to play against them when you're in the portal which is where Horton is this is what's new about bow games now he's really auditioning for a bunch of other teams that's it I mean that's the bottom line and uh you see it all over the place and that's the way it is in this day and time in college football so Horton will play against out and here today it's rainy and you can throw in cold and foggy and the tech fans have bought every ticket they can for this game here today hookies will be be wearing white jerseys with orange pants today and the white helmet toan is wearing black jerseys with green numbers and pants and a green helmet it is a Sun Belt Conference officiating crew Mike who are these gentlemen in the stripes Bowl followed that up with an 11- win season this year and then I M it was an exodus to Houston coach Willie Fritz and several players coaches all bolted for their new school uh it's it's you can almost feel for t l right I mean this is the best football they've ever had right Michael Pratt best quarterback ever in two-lane history winning his team Chris Razzle best receiver ever and they all leave yeah I know it is frustrating for the T Lane the Green Wave Nation I'm sure that's just the way it is in college football these days you know you get these better opportunities you got to take them when they do when opportunity knocks you got to answer and uh we'll just see what the motivation level is for this tan team we've seen it Bill your Al M Syracuse didn't play very well in their bowl game right similar situation new coaching staff but yet you turn around look at Duke and Duke played really well so uh it's going to be fun to watch and see who gets the upper hand here early at Troy they coached in that game against Duke so many new things are happening because of the portal right because should kids play if someone's transfering out should they still play for you if a mean that was a great fake I thought the running back had the ball but he kept it and tizzy was right on top of him second and 10 quick huddle quick throw from Horton dumps it off and immediately the hes are there to chop down the receiver on the near side that's Fleming Jenkins made the tackle and it's going to be third down and long for to Lane just underway no score yeah really good open field well Mike what about slay Nagel he's the guy that's going to be the head coach at chulan today first time he's ever been a head coach in a game is that crazy got to start somewhere right I mean Brent proud did the same thing but not in the bowl game so yeah it's kind of odd different uh but a good three and out for teex defense to start this game so well you can hear that rain coming out can't you it is raining very hard when you were here the last time Mike when the hookies played Cincinnati correct yeah very much same kind of weather same kind of thing maybe a little bit chillier uh but the on KY drones now they got a third really long number five the left defensive end is's already transferred to Houston but he's playing in the game today number 90 the right defensive end Devin deal he's going to TCU but they both start today Tain comes with the blitz on Third and 10 they get the ball free stripping it from drones it's picked up by the Tain team and there goes go a grub for the the story here particularly how it's impacting drones early you know that's the thing bill I mean wet ball drills you can do them all day long but until you get out here in this action when it's really wet just like you're saying the towel gets wet and everything gets messed up I mean he just looked like he was just getting ready to pull the ball down and getting ready to maybe to start his hokey Heroes today are US Navy Captain Dave dartez and US Navy Captain Jim Bond St Paul both are currently deployed to the sixth Fleet of the Gerald Ford carrier strike group it's on its sth month of an extended deployment Captain dartez graduated in 2001 with degrees in Ocean engineering and Aeros Space Engineering he's an F-18 Naval aviator scheduled to assume command of Carrier air Air Wing 8 next year meanwhile Captain Jim Von St Paul graduated back in 1999 with a degree in Ocean engineering a nuclear power qualified surface Warfare officer Dave and Jim want to say hello to their families back home Dave's wife is a 20 a 2003 Tech Alum they've got three kids Jim's married to a 98 Tech Alum they've got two kids so from our radio Booth here in Annapolis it is truly our honor today to say I mean we didn't play great today we played good we made plays we hung in there we kept playing we kept fighting good job by the coaches and the players hanging in there you know it was a a heck of an effort all three phases made plays that were important to us you know putting 41 on the board think might have gotten out of hand 553 if we just been better with the football how about the offensive line and just your run game the way they dominated this game yeah I tell you you go back and look anytime we've played well and scored a bunch of points we've been able to run the football I mean we have to do that that's who we are at Virginia Tech the rain made the fumble hard to keep that ball around the highs and lows guys just seem to to kind of take it right off the shoulder yeah we got to be better I mean we do wet ball work and and we got to be better there I think maybe we took it for granted a little bit so I've got to do a better job making sure that we get the work in when we know we're going to have a wet game coach you talked about yesterday you said special teams is going to play a big way where're we're something's going to happen special wise and and in that first quarter you you get that punt return it sets up that first score how critical was that yeah that was huge I mean special teams are definitely a key to our success to winning seven games it's uh it's a it's an important part of what and who we need to be at Tech it always has been when Tech's been at their best special teams have been a really impactful group we want that here coach Holt's doing a great job
