INSANITY IN NEW YORK. >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH, STEFON. THIS WAS A VERY BAD DAY FOR COMMUTERS IN THE TRI-STATE. IN FACT, PERHAPS ONE OF THE WORST COMMUNITY DAYS EVER IN THE NEW YORK CITY AREA. AND THAT'S SAYING A LOT CONSIDERING THE RECENT MELTDOWNS ON NEW JERSEY TRANSIT. IT STARTED WITH A MOTORCYCLE CRASH IN THE LINCOLN TUNNEL, AND THEN IT JUST SNOWBALLED. EVEN THOUGH IT'S STILL SUMMER, NEW JERSEY TRANSIT AND AMTRAK AND BUSSES AND FERRIES SEEMED THAT EVERYTHING THAT COULD GO WRONG DID GO WRONG. AND HOW COULD ALL OF THIS HAPPEN? NEW JERSEY REPORTER ANTHONY JOHNSON TRYING TO PIECE IT ALL TOGETHER FOR US. HE'S LIVE IN SECAUCUS, NJ. >> YEAH, BILL, YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. EVERYTHING THAT COULD GO WRONG WENT WRONG THIS MORNING. NOW WE'RE HERE AT SECAUCUS JUNCTION THIS AFTERNOON. LOOKS PRETTY NORMAL, BUT WE ARRIVED HERE BEFORE 10:00 THIS MORNING. AND THE CROWDS JAM PACKED JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE ON THE PLATFOR, TRYING TO GET ON THE PATH. TRAINS AND BUSSES WERE ARRIVING HERE, DROPPING OFF PEOPLE AT THIS LOCATION BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING INTO THE PORT AUTHORITY. BUT THEY GOT DIVERTED HERE. IT WAS A MORNING OF COMMUTING MADNESS. THE NEAR SYSTEM MELTDOWN BEGAN WITH AN ACCIDENT IN THE LINCOLN TUNNEL LONG BEFORE RUSH HOUR. AFTER THAT, THE DOMINOES BEGAN TO TUMBLE AND COMMUTERS WERE THE COLLATERAL DAMAGE. >> NOW, I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO. I MIGHT GO BACK HOME, BUT I'M NOT SURE I CAN GET HOME VERY EASILY EITHER. SO IT'S BEEN A SAGA. THE NEXT TRAIN. >> HERE'S A TIMELINE OF TRANSIT TROUBLES, WITH EVERY BLOW CAUSING MORE COMMUTER CHAOS. AT 3:50 A.M, THERE WAS A MOTORCYCLE CRASH WESTBOUND INSIDE THE LINCOLN TUNNEL'S CENTER TUBE. THIS HAPPENS AS WORK IS TAKING PLACE IN THE NORTH TUBE. AT 615, THE PORT AUTHORITY CONCLUDES NORTH TUBE CONSTRUCTION EARLY, BUT PROBLEMS ARE ALREADY BUILDING. AT 7 A.M, ACCIDENTS ON ROUTE THREE AND EASTBOUND AND WESTBOUND LANES AND EAST RUTHERFORD. THE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS THEN WERE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHEN SOMEONE HIT AN EMS VEHICLE, WHICH HIT THE EAST RUTHERFORD FIRE CHIEF'S VEHICLE. THIS CAUSED INJURIES. MEANWHILE, A BUS STALLED IN THE LINCOLN TUNNEL, MEANING THREE LANES OF TRAFFIC WERE SHUT DOWN. THEN, AT 9 A.M, NEW JERSEY TRANSIT REPORTS 30 MINUTE RAIL DELAYS. AT 9:45 A.M, NEW JERSEY TRANSIT AND AMTRAK SUSPEND TRAINS INTO PENN STATION. NEW YORK, DUE TO A POWER OUTAGE AT AN AMTRAK SUBSTATION. AT 10:15 A.M, AMTRAK RESTORES POWER. NEW JERSEY TRANSIT AND AMTRAK TRAINS RESUME WITH 60 MINUTE DELAYS. ALL OF THIS LED TO A FIASCO ON THE ROADS, RAILS, AND BUSSES. HOW BAD IS IT? JUST TELL ME. >> IT'S A SIGN TO GO HOME. >> THEY'RE TRYING TO GET IT STRAIGHT HERE TO GET EVERYBODY ON TRAINS TO NEW YORK. SO IT'S BEEN. IT'S BEEN TOUGH. >> IT'S A CRAZY DAY, RIGHT? YEAH. YEAH, WHATEVER. WE GOT TO ROLL WITH IT. >> COMMUTERS PACKED INTO TRAINS LIKE SARDINES. AND OTHERS WALKING ON DANGEROUS ROADS AFTER BUSSES BACKED UP THANKS TO WORKING REMOTELY. SOME PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO DO THEIR JOBS, OTHERS HAD APPOINTMENTS AND MEETINGS. THEY HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO GET INTO THE CITY ANY WAY THEY CAN. YOU STARTED IN NEW JERSEY AND YOU'RE STILL IN JERSEY, AND I'M STILL IN JERSEY. >> AND IF IT WASN'T FOR IMPORTANT MEETINGS IN MANHATTAN TODAY, I'D PROBABLY JUST GO HOME AND WORK FROM HOME TODAY. >> WE HAVE TO GET TO A HOSPITAL APPOINTMENT. SO. OH MY GOODNESS. YEAH. YEAH. SO. SO YOU'RE OFF TO THE HOSPITAL NOW? YEAH. IT'S JUST A SONOGRAM. BUT WE'RE LATE BECAUSE OF THAT. >> YEAH. THAT WAS MY COLLEAGUE ANTHONY CARLO. THIS MORNING, SPEAKING TO A COUPLE TRYING TO GET TO THE HOSPITAL. HOPEFULLY THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THAT LOCATION AROUND 1030. THEY WERE ABLE TO GET EVERYTHING BACK ROLLING ONCE AGAIN. AND SO FAR TODAY, THE COMMUTE SEEMS LIKE IT IS GOING NORMALLY, BUT QUITE A MORNING OUT HERE FOR MANY FOLKS FROM NEW JERSEY TRYING TO GET INTO NEW YORK.
