Notre Dame vs Northern Illinois Instant Reaction Postgame Show | Hit and Hustle

the postgame show for the Notre Dame loss to Northern Illinois University um inexplicable yeah I just it's unbelievable how this how this happens like it's so cliche to say you know oh it's going to be like Marshall it's going to be like Le it's going to be like whatever and you think like after last weekend's performance he just there's too much there defense is too good um offensive line comes together Notre Dame's going to figure it out and uh they couldn't figure it out they couldn't they couldn't score more than seven or 13 points against or 14 points against nor Illinois they lose the game uh there's a lot to talk about here uh does Notre Dame need to make a change at quarterback what do they need to do um some of the other problems that we saw uh so we're going to go over all that um obviously everyone's going to be pretty upset in the chat um you know I don't really want to hear like uh ex player sucks this guy sucks it just let's talk about the game um and and and talk about the problems obviously there were a lot of problems for indivual players but like that sort of thing just isn't going to do it for us uh on this show so let's keep a civilized on that front um but as off um Jamie I uh I I I I want to start with um the decision on in one from Midfield they're up 1413 um Notre Dame runs kind of like a a Mills concept with the slot they they run the slot on like a dig they run the the the field on a post um I I in our group chat I te it's one of the most shocking things I've ever seen in an noted Dame game just from like how can you why are you calling situationally for sure like why are you calling that play and second so woefully short I mean you got to get that ball has to be over the top of everyone um and it's not there just a shocking mistake from from uh Riley Riley Leonard in that spot um and that's kind of what led to the loss Jamie where was your mind at when when that play happened um I mean I didn't love the call in the moment like I just didn't think that um they had tried game yeah I I don't mind like that is the that is the down a distance that is the area of the field where you take a shot no doubt um but just how the game had played out and how Leonard had played and also too like he just has that has been his Achilles heels like he doesn't throw the Deep ball that well that has been his thing and if that was if if they were up like eight in that thing yeah I could I could roll with it you're going for The Knockout shot yeah but at that point was just no like there was just so much more of them they could have like just run four minute0 and just try to do it and I mean it it's not the worst call in the world but just sitation it was not I mean there's no way he feels good about it right now and the throw was atrocious it was just a bad throw like because it could have been could have been a touchdown if it's a money throw it's a touchdown like he had him beat yeah he had him beat right um so I don't know like I Leonard was bad I I don't even know he was he was more he was shockingly bad like it was real not good um I they weren't a serious offense today just straight up like they they were they they couldn't everything they were doing was like that especially that play was so shocking to me because everything had been short they they were running everything they were did not want to push the ball down the field you didn't see a Crosser pretty much the whole game until like the the end where they hit Chris Mitchell on the on the on the cross at the end um you didn't see that you didn't you know you saw the one post route you never saw they throw vertical the first interception he threw he's got Bo Collins streaking down the sideline who has his man beaten and it's just that Ball's got to go over the top yeah hit that he's not throwing that it it's just it was or if you talk to great house great house was open for a second but then when he decid to throw that he was just so late in processing everything and CU I promise you even on the ones who like the protection was fine like majority of the day like I don't know he was bad he was just bad like yeah it's just not it man it it's not it it's unacceptable it truly is it's not an acceptable performance from an undername quarterback and um we'll get to some I'm going to get to some super chats in just a second um but I I do feel like as I'm watching this and look this could this could be an overreaction right I may look at back on this and and I'm overreacting um I I think you got to think about putting in Ang jelli because here's the thing his legs weren't enough of a difference in this game no to to mitigate the fact that they can't throw the ball they cannot throw the ball and like that is not acceptable if you want to a good team you have to be able to do the little thing like everything is short you don't his his eyes are not in the right spot you know he the the throw to great house at the end like where where um he he has the out route he where's that ball going I have no idea where that ball is going um it's just the throw to Mitchell regardless of the fact that it's a bad decision it's it's woefully short it just his his legs it's just like the Brandon wimbush thing I said he was a better th running better throwing Brandon wimbush he might be a worse running Brandon wimbush like it can't look like that it cannot his legs are not much enough of a factor to justify keeping him in the lineup you got have to run him way more if that's what they're gonna do like and obviously they scored on the first drive well they ran him a ton yes and so also too and I mean in this I will you got to kind of go on Den Brock too because you got to read what your team is during the game too like how things are going yeah it obviously was not going to happen for Leonard throwing the ball today and you know maybe you could have gained some stuff later on as you you're going but like there was a time in like the second quarter when it was like well I guess if Riley's still playing in this game we gotta run him yeah a bunch of times and I know that that's just no one wants to run and he was already getting beat up and whatever but like I'm sorry like that's that's the bet for him to stay in the game that is what was needed it was it was what was needed so um I mean that was a mistake like if you look at like this was this was uh you know a horrific job by the offense in general but it's it mostly stems from the quarterback really like it really was like it just was I I don't really know any other way to to to say it because if you think about it like other than like Jeremiah love like that amazing touchdown or whatever right like what did Notre Dame do well after that first drive like nothing nothing really like I I I knew this was a game too like you knew it they were they did exactly what they were like hey they're going to play zone like 7 5% of the time and you're going to have to just like run Zone beaters and you're going to have to be accurate and hit guys in the hole and whatever and like he just was off on so many of those and like there's a reason why great housee got so many Targets in this game and I know he dropped the one uh you know should have had it right should have had it um but I mean basically all the other ones were like not on him like and and I could say that even like the what here's the per okay this is what signaled to me to not throw that deep ball two plays before that was a throw that like it should have been picked oh yeah the sideline throw sideline to cins is a great catch took it away from that dude like that was a signal to me like oh boy like do not throw this ball like like if I'm just reading it and I'm thinking I'm like right after that I'm like price love let's get out of here with a W that's what I I would be thinking at that point and you know what and you could say it's on Den Brock too but 100% that's on Marcus Freeman because he should be saying that to him like as soon as I see that I'm going over the OC and being like you know what to do like like that that's just a poor job like that's a poor job they got so out coached in this game uh and I do want to give flowers to um you know Thomas hammock and the job that he did like I mean I thought he just did a massal g job with his timeouts you know knowing when to use it not just like hey calming guys down in these certain spots he was totally in control of the game like he he had had it the whole way and uh their OC Wesley Basher if this guy's not getting calls after this game like what are we doing like he was phenomenal in this game like absolutely like they could only win the only way that they could win is that guy had to call an A+ game and he did he absolutely did yeah I mean you're right I mean they did do a good job he did call a good game um I mean also like the only way they could win is like just Notre Dame just a just completely implode on offense I mean yeah you know like look it's good right like they hit the they hit the explosive early and that's like just a like I I thought that was a bust by Watts like it looked like they were in three I don't know why he's on the other side of the hash on the outside of the left hash like to the boundary why is he not in the middle of the field that that that was I I thought he was just misalign there whether it was whether it was a Mis coverage or what it was he has to be in the middle of the field field there just looking at the rest of the defense um look at I I you know in the like middle of the fourth quarter like I think 52% of their plays had come on three plays or 5 52% of their yards had come on three plays so it was just points yeah they were basically surviving on on those which like look you know good job by you you schemed it up and it hit um but I mean that's what it is you just need to another D to completely implode offensively and that's what they got um we got to get to some super chats Caleb Collins says this is what happens when you play a running back a quarterback and our DC doesn't respect the run I mean like look I and you ran the ball like probably better but they ran the ball better than you would want against like an elite defense you think not names is but like they averaged 4.2 yards for carry one of those one of those was an explosive like it's just it's just not like look there are some defensive problems in this game I just feel like it's almost not even worth bringing up it's there there is so clearly one problem with Notre Dame's football team right now um Caleb Collins says hashtag why not Kenny talking about Kenny minchy there um I mean I I why not someone else is I think kind of where my mind is at um greatest ever MD thank you for the Super Chat guys love you all but the excuses for Freeman have to stop this was NIU 14 points Marcus Freeman is the head coach if you can't overrule Den Brock's play calls then what are we doing um Jimmy did make that point like he does have to say hey we're not throwing the ball right now like jaran price has four carries in this game he needs to get the ball like we need to get the ball to our best players just hand it to him right Jeremiah Love 11 carries in the game yeah it just they're the two best offensive weapons you have right now and they need to be emphasized a lot more Tommy McGinley um thank you for the Super Chat I don't know if if you had a a question with that um I I try to have to find it because we have a lot of chats I don't know if you had a question with this it looks like maybe you did so if you did throw it throw it up and and I'll get to the question um stubborn Mick with the Super Chat thank you very much I am done with the transfer quarterback nothing against Leonard but go continuing to go the same well at same position isn't it that being said Leonard throwing the pick in the fourth shouldn't matter versus NIU um well the problem bad before right like he's his play is the reason that it mattered in the fourth quarter matter yeah yeah so he was the problem I I do think there's something to be said for this like Notre Dame is just they are not the type of school it seems that is going to go into the portal and the quarterback is going to solve their problems if anything comes from this I think like it is truly Notre Dame needs to dig deep and think about how they're going to become a good offense because right now that is a stinky offense it's stinky you know look there was there was a reason for it against Texas A&M there is no reason for it today you got to be able to throw the ball you got to be able to move the chains if if it's not if your quarterback isn't a good enough Runner or you're not using that enough then you got to make a change you just do your your quarterback room is too good for it to for it to be like this yeah like let's not forget like he was a massive reason they won against Texas A&M like for sure they needed him against Texas A&M so you know he deserves credit for that but like this was just it was so bad like that I don't know like like I I just don't know how you can go out of this game and feel like man like he'll probably he'll start the next game but like I'm sure of it like they're gonna start him the next game but like I mean basically one or two bad drives and it's got to be like a quick cook it has to be like it it it has to be because now now okay obviously all the premature the every all the talk about you know going to the playoff was way premature which I just thought was I mean I did hear a lot of people I thought yeah definitely their chances were better of of them going undefeated and you know making the playoff you know after they won that first game but like the way I heard like even some of the national people like I mean they're a lock I'm like they're a lock like they still gotta play like we don't know what's going to happen during the season like just they still got to play so maybe that did Factor into some of the stuff with with them I I mean maybe it's just human nature uh but now there's actually zero room for air they they have to win 10 straight games to get in um there's no other options and if they don't it's it's an absolute massive failure by by Marcus Freeman and the staff it is you know we give these guys their flowers after after they beat Texas and and they deserved it they deserved it well guess what like it's just it's the same thing this week like if you you go yeah you're only as good as your last game and this game was a stinker was brutal and um yeah and I mean and I would agree too like I okay I only want to just hit on this on the defense because I do think this is the one this is the one I'll just say those explosives like first play uh not just like the thing with with wat like it was a fluke it was 100% a fluke like he was supposed to run a slant couldn't and then the quarterback was literally just getting rid of the ball just to to get it and it just it like you know and then Morrison broke off and it just was yeah bad like so it was a fluke play hey whatever they hit it good for them and then obviously the other like explosives were like you know you give up explosives you give up points but then they you know they stopped and get him three the big thing was second and long like I mean I'll go and look at it because I mean I tweeted the one thing before half what it was and it was like they basically got like got like they they had probably second and long was probably had to been like eight yards per carry on second because you look how many times they stuff them on first down yes and then second and long they give up eight you know this is where to your point about the coaching they must have had a a read on under Dame about what Al golden likes to do on second and longes and stuff and a tendency there and they just said we can get them this way on second and long they must have because it was too consistent for it to be like you said fluky like it was it was throughout the game and okay and I I totally understand the the numbers say second along is a pass down you know it is it is a pass down but it was so clearly not a pass down for NIU the entire game and yeah yeah there was plays where maybe some guys should went on front but like they had to do different like whatever they were doing they had to do something different on second along and that was that was how NIU was able to just chew up clock and shorten the game and really um that's obviously not why Notre Dame lost the game but it's also why it was like putting those in those second half possessions where it was like okay well you better score here because there's not many other you're not GNA get many more drives right so from that perspective that was definitely like a a a huge problem for um for Notre Dame but like and and Ethan hton he played a good game but you would think that this guy put up like just incredible numbers he just played a very smart game what this is what the Marshall kid did they had two point whatever yards average yards depth of Target this is what they did this is exactly how Marshall beat Notre Dame it's exactly the same they just ran and i' like I I I tweeted this out too I've never seen see him run more play action out of all their dropback like it was like 80% it was like 80% and I mean credit to them because it was like the they knew they knew if they drop back all the time they were gonna get pressured to crap like it was just going to be and it was going to be he eventually a mistake would happen and it would be whatever but it's really not that different than what ND did against Texas A&M and just being like okay we're gonna run like screen here and this here short you know quick game here and like that was they basically had the same kind of thing um I mean and they only scored 16 points it so it wasn't that it's just that the offense was just horrendous like it just couldn't do anything like couldn't couldn't do anything and um man I I I don't know like I'm I'm I I mean you could feel it during the game like I was like I don't think the offense is ever going to get out of this yeah I just didn't I just didn't feel like they were were going to get out of it because I just didn't see anything different and I never saw one thing where I was like okay well now they're gonna like scheme something up to just get some momentum or anything there was nothing there was nothing there like um I I don't know it was just I I don't know what it is because I I can't really remember a game outside of that Marshall game this was it felt it was exactly like the Marshall game it truly was yeah it truly was including the the horrifying pick at the end like I I agree with you like I was watching and I thought I don't and this is this is again what made the the decision to throw it when they did so incredible because I was thinking like I was like man they just don't have anything like they don't have anything they need to be able to just grind this out somehow and you're sitting there at second and one you just you just it's second and one like it's a run like you it's so clearly a time to run it that's why I because I was like man it doesn't seem like they're just off or oh it was there you just missed it like like even even the Marshall game I felt like they got stuff available they're just not hitting it in this game I felt like man they're just they don't have it whatever it is whatever they're trying to do it's just not there for them um another Super Chat from Caleb Collins um don't want to hear about wide receiver in the offseason ever again uh I don't know I gotta see the all 22 tode on these guys I didn't think it was their fault I didn't think it was their fault it wasn't their fault but I don't know if they were like part of the solution either right like great house you got to catch it you just do like I you got to catch the the the fade ball you just have you got to catch that feed ball 100% but like what what can I say about Bo Collins every time they throw it to him it's a catch like I you know he's made plays two games in a row now um Chris Mitchell you know they threw him an in they threw him an out he caught both of those um I I just like they're not throwing the ball to Jaden Harrison I mean they're not throwing a ball to Mitchell Evans like they can't get Mitchell Evans open I mean you can't get him open what's like that's to me that's like come on you got to be able to get him the ball um next one from hold it to your face so what Riley Leonard was overhyped by the Notre day media ISD included just like they overhyped Sam Hartman when will Notre Dame fans learn obviously you're not a Notre Dame fan but we appreciate Super Chat um I mean that's hand up like I I I look I thought Ry Leonard would obviously be much better than this so have to I have to say like I am I'm guilty I am guilty of this I thought he would be much better I I I did not think it would he would be the reason that Notre Dame was losing to Northern Illinois he absolutely was I mean it was a Tyler Buckner Marshall performance just was you know and uh which is another game where they were like Hey we're not gonna run him what yeah yeah what are we doing here what are we doing here run this 25 pound quarterback like Chris Sabo the the maybe the former Cincinnati Red is in the chat um who are the viable candidates to be head coach Freeman can go um not having that conversation not because I I disagree with the sentiment per se uh I don't I don't think that contract distinction is on the way I'll tell you that um but I you know definely if if they agree to it they're definitely not announcing it anytime it's not gonna be a thing um here we go here's Harold ustach how about both the offense and defensive lines getting dominated NIU got push on every run it felt like you know to be honest like did you think the offensive line was was the problem today or a problem I didn't think either the lines were that bad I'm not saying they I don't not saying they were great they certainly didn't dominate NIU like not at all but I mean I'll go back and watch it but I I certainly didn't think like man they can't open holes up front on on in in the Run game like or they can't move these guys off the ball or I mean there was definitely like in the second quarter I would say man I thought the defensive line like specifically it was like uh Mills and hinish together on this one drive were just they they weren't it like they were just getting moved too much and that was definitely a problem um but like I I didn't think like if you go look at it like tell me like Jordan Patell was getting Mo no bubacar who's like not known for being a thing he had a really good game against the Run he played well like Burnham played well against the Run um I mean I gotta watch it back with RJ Obin but like he's been a ghost out there like I have you don't notice him at all um and and I I mean I texted during the game is he has he played that's that's where it is like I texted during the game what has he played in the game um I don't know and I actually thought like Ane had a couple huge plays in this game as for a guy who kind of usually gets uh you know capped on by a lot of people like he he he made a couple huge plays one third down stuff was like massive also he's getting he's getting hugged from the back and there's no call of course just come on like get in there refs but um I don't know like I didn't think like they didn't you want to see them definitely like you know beat the crap out of like niu's uh online but that to me wasn't the you know that wasn't the big issue and there was like also too like you could look at it where like last game um I mean I just think it was like pieces of the defense on certain plays that you could look at were like man this backer had a bad fit or this guy just missed you know this tackle he got beat to the edge like he didn't make this play right like there's just a lot of that kind of stuff in this game like it's but I mean look at there was way more stuff from the defense that you're like man this was like I mean X Watts almost makes the freaking play of the century you know like yeah they're like um you know Jordan Clark came up huge on a couple of uh you know third down if you're Jordan Clark what do you say like what did he do wrong like he did literally he he he had two opportunities to do something he made both plays yeah Jaden osburg again played really really well great game yeah really good football player so I mean even on just like there was just like a thing and not to say like Kaiser I don't I wouldn't say it was like his best game or anything like that but like they ran that screen and they hit it and I was like oh no like that was I thought that was gonna score yeah um and Kaiser literally like oneand like man grapped the guy down or El or else not scoring like that's it was that big of a play because they caught Notre Dame in a pressure so um I don't know like it's I can nitpick the defense and I I will when I do the film review but like I just look at it where there was just so much there where I'm like man the offense and it was everything from like the I it's tough to get in a flow calling place when you're not having a lot of success and and I get that part of it um but I just I'm like flabbergasted by like what they were unable to do on offense like they could have to me they could have just kept going and just like marched it down just methodically in a a lot of times but then Leonard would just miss like a layup or um you know they it was the that kind of thing that it was just like wow and now all of a sudden that puts him behind the thing and I'm like in those obvious passing situations I just never felt good with uh with Leonard I I almost thought too that's what Notre Dame should have been running it on second and long most of the time yeah I thought or third and long yeah like on the the way that this was so much like the Marshall game with all the straight drops too it's like I'm I'm sitting there watch watch in L IU like you said just go play action all the time and every Notre day and pass it's a straight drop like just we're we're we're passing right it's straight drop and everyone's hooking up around like seven to eight yards and it's well this this isn't you know he's not and eventually he messes up that's not his game and it hasn't been his game and and so they went for it um Wellington Davies said uh Elco told his coaches run the damnn ball where was Freeman in game he's in over his head as a game manager I don't need a speech after the game saying we've been here before I need in game management so Marcus Freeman said in the press conference afterwards um uh we've been here before that so that's where that's coming from uh probably not a great quote uh to give when you just lost NIU and because everyone's remembering the Marshall loss and whatever it for me now probably like get used to it yeah yeah it's a little bit like that DAV thank you for the Super Chat uh we have aled about how they needed to how Freeman needed to kind of dictate things to um to den Brock to be clear though that Elco said that like literally said that he was waving a white they're W flag he was basically saying just take a knee essentially so because he knew his he knew his staff got his quarterback was gonna get hurt yeah he knew his staff got out coach in that game so like let's not give we can easily 100% yes you're right we should criticize Marcus Freeman let's not give Mike El's opinion uh thank you for the Super Chat German lamb hard to believe Den Brock's offense with three first round picks might not be a reliable indicator of his OC Acumen I think this is uh tongue and cheek um here's here's the thing people say like it's all just like no one thought Jaden Daniels was anything when he was the Arizona State like Arizona State's players were like literally celebrating when he transferred like they wanted him gone and he goes like I I don't want to do this thing where it's like everything Mike Dem Brock's ever done is nil and Nan void because he had a bad game here I mean he had a Terri it was a terrible game it was he did not do well he did not have a good game plan I don't think he adjusted very well um you know look we've seen we saw at Notre Dame they had good offenses at Notre Dame they were much better than this yeah and somebody somebody in the chat to pointed out like I saw what Mike denrock did when he at Cincinnati to Notre D like it's not on yeah Mike Den Brock's not the problem so it's like yeah I mean I do not think yeah it's no one's throwing this game plan uh and you know the adjustment all that no no one's you know making a photo copy of this or or you know laminating this putting it up on the wall like it's it's definitely not that but I mean I don't know I I I always think too like it saying like oh you can't judge I think they had the number one offense in the country like it literally doesn't get any better like he did what you're supposed to do so I mean I don't know like the other thing is too is like I not not to say that um yeah BR this guy he's he's a good coordinator but like you know ke call plays with him last year too and there were some games they stunk like so it's it's just you know but you got to bring your aame every time when you're at Notre Dame and not just think and also too you're making a lot of money you're making a lot of money and so if I mean I it's not gonna be a fun Tuesday for for him that's for sure yeah you just can't you know it's like and it's the the thing about Riley Leonard too like he just was not this bad at dude he wasn't no I we watched almost every game that he is played he was not this bad that's the thing I you know whether overhype sure like you watch that and you think yeah like we said the guy was good was better than this and he was I mean look I I don't I don't want to like pump up other people or anything but like like Nate Ty is is a guy who evaluates pros and he has been impressed with Riley Leonard this whole time right like people thought he was a good player I didn't just make it up I wasn't trying to say that like you know Drew Pine was was gonna play in the NFL or anything like that like I just guy had people thought he was good so it wasn't just us making things up for the sake of hike like there were things he could do you didn't do them today and so Notre Dame is uh they're one and one with a lot you know funny too is like you know people were talking about last year uh you know uh Jared Parker and Sam Hartman I think last year what would have happened is n Dame would have lost to Texas A&M and then they would have beaten Northern Illinois 46 to six you know yeah and because that's why they averaged 40 points a game and like seven yards a play or whatever it was because they destroyed these types of teams um that that was how it went so uh we got another Super Chat here from blazing down her uh I think you might have you might have a uh you might have a question as well so if you have a question throw it in here and and we will um we will get it um all right Jamie let's see here oh hold on let me let me get this re so I guess here's the thing here's here's kind of where I'm at you know I think probably if I had to guess today uh if I had to guess today I would say Ry Leonard will start against Purdue probably I would be shocked if he didn't I would be shocked if he didn't too what can they do that's different where you think yeah like if they do this they will be a better football team because for me it's just like you are hoping for improved play that's it we're going to do this I think theame is going to do the same stuff be better at the stuff we're doing I think that's what Notre Dame's gonna do and to be honest I don't really want to sit around and hope that that happens I don't but like what what had what did you see throughout the game where you think yeah like they can do XYZ um and be better or is it just simply play better I mean some of it's play better but um the one thing that makes it just I mean this is football is like well you're gonna play a completely different defense next week like yeah Purdue plays like more man coverage than anyone than literally anyone in the country they play more than more than Notre Dame like they play Man all the time that's Ryan Walters that's what he does he plays a ton of coverage and he recruits like a bunch of long fast corners and they're going to play Man coverage and they're going to bring heat especially against this young offensive line they're bringing heat all day like so you better have a ton of Blitz beaters you better have a ton of band coverage beaters like you better have that in your pocket all game long and if it's looking ugly early you know then you got to look for something else and I see some other people saying too about like how like well why does it have to be an Angeli they like you know because a lot of people are like on the minchie or the car bandwagon right they're like go with this guy because it's it's always going with the guy with the highest and I get it right I get it like those guys are more exciting talents thing and jelly the problem is is that unless you Elevate those guys to get the Reps like you basically would have to just say hey we're going to play you know we're gonna play Carr or we're gonna play minchi this week that guy has to get like starter reps during the week like yeah you can't you can't just be like hey you're getting like no reps they probably got no reps in this last like like barely any you know what I mean like and then all of a sudden it's like well you to not only just give him them and Jelly's reps you basically have to take away Leonard's reps in order to get those guys ready and so that's why you don't see that change made very often where it goes like that or you don't see it unless it's like a the you got time so if they're gonna make that change like they would have to make that decision like that would be like right after the game Den Brock would have to say like him him and Freeman would have to be like and guli or whatever they'd have to be like well we're getting car ready or something like that they would have to so I guess it's possible that they could do that but it's probably not likely um because then as soon as you do that too that starts that starts all the process of like these guys like one of those guys getting ready like start contacting schools because they're going to transfer and all that kind of stuff right so I don't know I I don't see I mean I'm not saying that I don't see one of those guys playing this year because obviously this you know this is one of those kind of things that could open up a whole bunch of possibilities with it but I just don't know um you know when that would be and I would doubt I would doubt you know you're gonna do that to a guy who's never played and then it's like hey by the way your first game you're gonna be on the road at a team who's going to Blitz the living hell out of you and uh you know that just no like it it would that would actually be like you should fire the coaches probably if they made that decision it it' be a bad it'd be a bad decision because you're setting up those guys to fail right and it just I you know so Angeli would probably be the best if they were going to do something they would have to do it but I would 100% challenge Riley Leonard this week and be like well how are you going to be better and then be like if Steve's better than you this week then we're gonna play Steve like he's gonna start like I I would I would say that to him yeah um or well not I wouldn't necessarily say that to him because it's just like one of those things I don't know like you know how like the whole thing with Tua right where some guys they respond to it they're like hey you don't believe me okay whatever I'm going to show you and then there's other guys who need like hey don't worry you're a guy yeah you need that so I don't um I don't know I don't know what kind of guy for sure Leonard is even though his mom tells him you suck every week so maybe he's the kind of guy who needs the the negative thing to go but whatever it is you got to learn what it is and and get to it um Tommy McGinley this is actually a good question really good question uh what's the Defcon level if it would come up that would be great if I could get this to come up there we go what's the Defcon level what's a reasonable take on this loss and the rest of the season that or the for the lay fan I guess um what do you think it is like I know it feels I I I I know it's it's like one of those things where it's like it all feels lost right um where do you think the Defcon level is for another Dame right now I mean I mean it's it's you watch a game like that and it's like how how are they going to ever because that's two games in a row where the offense look didn't look good and and they and it was the same kind of thing like they can't they couldn't pass really against uh& M couldn't pass in this game they ran the ball a little bit right so they had some explosives in the running game uh they had that uh they had one called back again as as they did last week and uh but that's kind of where it is like they can hit some explosives can't can't stretch the ball vertical not a vertical team can't hit explosives in the passing game unless it's a screen maybe um what what do you think the concern is right because I'll be honest like I I was what I was thinking even if Notre Dame wins this game I there's major concerns major major concerns about what I'm seeing on offense so what do you what do you think it is what do you think the concern level is for N I think it's it's it's got to be pretty high because um you can't go like how the schedule is and you can say like yeah they should be able to I mean I don't think Purdue should score a ton of points against Notre they won't I don't think so and I don't think you know Miami Ohio will score a lot of points against not I mean I don't think anybody's Really Gonna score too many points against Notre Dame all year but if if this is what you're going to get on offense anytime you play a pretty decent defense I mean I don't Purdue could be bad still that's the other thing Purdue this is the bad luck part of it for Notre Dame is the first games they play so they play NIU which played just a gross bad Western Illinois team right the team that lost 77 whatever to Indiana like so you didn't get to see like even most of their personnel in that game because guys played like 18 plays because they were just rolling them so bad and then Purdue played Indiana State in week one and then has a buy so like you don't really know them that much like they're going to be different so an unenviable task for specifically for the coaches on defense to be like we're preparing for this stuff but we really haven't seen it that much you know in the first three weeks of the Season that like that sucks um but Purdue like I don't know how good their defense is GNA be they got a shut out against the Indiana State their defense was bad last year but Ryan Walters has had really good defenses at at Illinois and at Missouri and and like great defense in Illinois like top five defenses and I think they're going to be better because I they landed some guys in the portal that I think they're going to be you know good enough and then the fact like I mean they're just going to be thinking it's right for the picking in this game so they're gonna come after Notre name and then Miami Ohio has the one thing they have is a good defense yeah so yeah I just the match and then you play Louisville who also by the way has a good defense so what can you do like you better like there was all this talk about growing and whatever I was like this this game showed no growth for uh Notre names offense so you hope that they have can grow next week but now it's like I mean the coaches better just do an ace of a job or else it's going to be you know really bad and it doesn't matter how good your defense is if your offense you know you don't have confidence you can put points on the board um so I think concern level should be pretty high right now and it can all change in a week right it can all change because if they go and they actually like hey they figure stuff out because you know you're going to learn things over the course of it like that uh 2022 year like that was a team that obviously like at that North Carolina game hit their stride and changed and and realize hey we can do this with a quarterback change yeah with the quarterback change but we realize we can do this we can't do this and whatever so now basically like Mike denrock and the staff they have to make decisions like this is what we can do right now and this but this is what we need to do and can we you can't win without explosives in the passing game you just can't it's just like it's unless you're just running the ball like no you actually can't against a good defense no you just can't so um I don't know I don't like it's gonna be very very tough unless they find a way to get explosive in the passing game and that's the main thing if like that that would be like a thing if I'm watching practice this week and I'm like oh my god Riley lonard just sailed that deep ball or he under through that deep ball whatever yes Defcon whatever the highest level fcon is is like yeah I I I I would be concerned it's because the thing is is like again going back to the Marshall game like the difference between that game and this one is in that in the Marshall game I felt like man there's opportunities here that he's just not hitting and you got to hit this right and I mean look at I you I I don't know that I've ever been as low about an utter Dame offense as I was like in the first quarter of that cow game that was real bad that was real real yeah yeah that that that was I mean yes that was the absolute worst it was definitely worse than this um not that this is any good but so it can get figured out but I just man it's because here's the thing Defcon I don't I don't know what the defcons are by the way if it's one is Ison five the the worst I think five is I think it goes the opposite I think one is whatever whatever the worst is I I I I think it here's the thing this is still happening still because look this is always lurking this loss is always lurking in there right you just had a a great win against Texas A&M and then you did the thing that you did in Marcus Freeman's second game it's just the second game like his second game as a coach and it's like oh you know he did he didn't do a good job it's a he he he had him up for the opener against Ohio State and so they were hyped for that but he didn't know how to mod you know modify his team get them ready to go uh for for the next game they had a let down they blew it against Marshall second game coach you understand it's his third year and the same thing happened the same thing happened it's so that's to me it's where it's like sure there's there's a lot of stuff with the offense and everything and I don't know how that's going to get fixed but it's also like man we Notre Dame's been here before man we've seen this and it happened again and that's just just kind of a big picture question about man where is this going you know that's kind of that's kind of where I'm at um Caleb Collins with another Super Chat uh thank you for your participation in this show uh tired of the wine and cheese people not creating a whole field advantage listen listen you're never gonna get a crazy crowd when you're struggle busting against Northern Illinois yeah that's just true that's just you're never it's no school is going to get the Texas A&M if they struggled with first of all that I saw some pictures there's no way that they sold out Texas they had a lot of empty seats in the stadium if they were struggle busing at Texas A&M or against MCN State at Texas A&M today that that that crowd would have been silent you can't count on the crowd against nor Northern just can't you have to control them you have to make them excited because you're just this I can't blame the fans for being quiet against Northern Illinois you just can't it's not the F well with the way you start like it's just right there was no I mean you look at out that how many drives it took for them to like get going again on offense like yeah and and it's funny because uh uh you know our friend Michael Bryan was on uh um you know the rkes report with with Buddy Chris Wilson and and he was talking about how there's like the wide range of fans who were at the Texas S&M game and we all talking you know it's it's funny because there's like some people who know like every little detail about the team and there's other people who are like who's our new quarterback like they just like don't know anything right and um but you know and you can imagine if you go to a not aim game there's a ton of people who go to those games who just like don't like they don't know who Riley Leonard is so their first impression of Riley Leonard is coming to this game and they're like oh my God like just I mean atrocious right they they're just they're feeling terrible you know they're feeling terrible so why should those people get loud like the team's got to play good enough to get the crowd into it and um it just couldn't like I I mean I I mean I I don't know it didn't sound crazy loud when like Notre Dame got stopped but Notre Dame got like some big stops on defense in the game and but but then they'd follow it up by like going three and out so it's was like you know you're not building anything in terms of momentum with the fans you have jayen Ury gets a stop on Fourth and two three and out immediately just off the field like it just you could you couldn't even get a for like it it's just like man it's just so unserious it truly is and it it's like I I I just I'm shocked that we're we're at this place with this team where just like it was this it's the same thing and like there's another comment in here about you know there's there's here from Matt McCarthy two three more losses at minimum let me bring it up uh streamyard is being really slow today it's frustrating um you know what's scary there are probably two three more losses at minimum remaining on the schedule and next year's team will be worse than this year's team with how many starters they'll lose the the thing that's frustrating to me is there are two three more losses on the schedule I don't know who the teams are I couldn't even predict who the teams are but you know they're coming that's the frustrating part is that they are the losses are coming and you don't know where when why like they could they could they could lose to I I predicted them to lose to Stanford not for any just I thought they would lose a game but they could lose to Stanford they could they could blow out the next three teams lose to Stanford and you would not know it would be not surprising in the least because this is what they've been you well I mean you just can't I mean I think even that 2022 season um I mean it's one of the reasons where I was like they're not beating Clemson I'm like forget it I'm like Oh my they're going to run the ball on this defense like they didn't run the ball like that on anyone with a good defense so I was like no they're not winning that game and then they went and like just R it down their throats yeah for four quarters um so I don't know like I I really don't know like if you told me that Notre Dame wins 10 straight the there's too much talent for them to say that oh this is 100% this is what it's going to be and I do the other thing is too is like you can be like man the defense wasn't great today I mean they weren't great but they certainly played well enough to win and they'll play well enough to win every week just like they did last year like they played well enough to win every week yeah so it's really about where if the offense is going to play well enough to win every week and at this point certainly can't be convinced of that and that's just kind of what it is so yeah this is kind of like I mean it's it's kind of the the biggest week of Marcus Freeman's career like he's gota they have to I mean they gotta win the game no matter what like they gotta win the game but like it would sure help if they want but even then it's the only thing that will get that will kind of get him in the good graces are and people are rooting for him people are we've always said this they're rooting for him but like the only thing that will get him in the good graces of most people is to go win 10 in a row and then then win a playoff game and then win at least one playoff game that's the only way anything less than that and I mean no one there there's going to be huge doubt if he is the guy for Notre Dame um no matter how much he's embraced don't matter how much he's improve recruiting or how much he's whatever like that's the only thing that matters it really is it really is so and the other thing is too then but I mean you know I don't even want to think about if they ever had to make a change or whatever but like it's just that's just what what's required in your third year it's just what what's required it is and you know you're talking about you know when people be happy win 10 games win a playoff game whatever like what you're talking about is feel the good football people will be happy with that when you feel a good football team that can play offense and that can play defense and you you you run over teams like Northern Illinois that's what makes people happy it doesn't make people happy when you struggle bus again against a a a side like this it's just you know and like there's last year they they mopped up the easy teams and they lost inexplicably at times or the way they lost was to you know some of the team like Clemson that that was not a very good cemon team and they got they got beat in that game Louisville was good but the way that they came out in that game just a complete mess they were a mess on the road last year and in the first year they they lost to cupcakes and they have they have lost to a cupcake again and that's feel a good football team that's what make will make people happy Caleb Collins says o line and dline driven uh don't look like it thank you for the Super Chat on that um and let's see if there's a couple more comments it's just kind of that's where I'm at here um just with with this game and just how I feel about it like um sorry I didn't mean to put that up pick six Nebraska uh what's the score there it about to be 14 nothing about to be 14 nothing um I mean pavin b says Kaiser throws Sim interception similar to Kaiser uh or Riley those interception similar to Kaiser like the well the difference is is that Kaiser was hitting bombs when he wasn't throwing those picks and Kaiser was you know just shoot if he was Notre nam's quarterback this year it'd be different he was a better he was a much better thrower yeah and they could still do the Run game stuff with Kaiser too like he was you know I I so I I do think there is something to um I just think they they really need to seriously look at the quarterback situation for under Dame they they just he has to he has to it can't you can't you can't say oh we have all these good quarterbacks and then you play the one that you can't confidently throw the ball with and from what I saw in this game they they cannot confidently throw the ball and and you didn't you didn't see it in the opener either um so you know that's that's kind of where it's at for me um kind anything clo kind of closing from you like big picture uh before we get going here yeah I just think it's a crucial week it's a crucial week where um you've got to make like big decisions on kind of like it's it goes beyond like saying like well I challenge the team I challenge the team because for sure it goes way beyond that it goes way beyond that hey we gotta you know we got to do a better job of this it's like you've got to you've got to go into that Purdue game with a plan to say hey this is how we're going to win this game against this type of Team on the road with the with the guys we have and then if those aren't the guys then I mean you gotta be looking at other guys because there is enough Talent on the offense for them to be much better there just is so that's that's the way um that's the way it's got to be yeah I don't even know come on Jamie just say it what do you want me to say I I'm I'm I'm not sure what you're trying for me to say uh I don't know I think he wants I think he wants something to do with r Leonard uh Matt McCarthy says the admin should do more to help the program uh I I disagree 100% with this 100% i i i admin has done more than enough to Aid Marcus Freeman in building the program the way it needs to be built and that that no I I Riley Leonard was an undergrad transer I I verely Bo Collins was an undergrad transfer uh I I 100% um pushed back on this I I don't think this is true and uh they've done enough they he needs to do better it's unacceptable it's an unacceptable situ for the resources that he has at not Dame uh well maybe you missed it earlier Jeff Scott when I said that Ry Leonard was atrocious in this game like I I think I like I I mean I don't I don't think I pulled punches when talking about his level of play in this game or that they could easily you know replace him I just said like I said earlier like I don't think they're going to bench him before the game I think they're going to play him and then you're have to you're gonna have to make a decision like whether or not like yeah he can he can get it done and if it's not getting it done they gotta have the next guy ready and it would be Steve and jelli yeah yeah um isak uh I'll say isak k what if Leonard comes out and throws for 250 and two touchdowns and nerding wins by 30 great great you move forward yeah then you move forward go back to to go back to uh you know the the 2022 thing like sure Drew Pine went out against North Carolina and lit them on fire and then they went and beat BYU and everyone felt great and then they went and lost at home to Stanford the losses have just they have been there consistently for one reason or another and they need to stop they need to stop this it's what happened today is just unacceptable there's too many resources within your program to allow this to happen just bull stop it can't it can't happen at this
