hello everybody Welcome in to Indiana's Memorial Stadium here in Bloomington is the Indiana hoers open up the Kurt cetti ERA with a victory over FIU 31-7 today in a game that uh worked out to be pretty much what we expected to see some things that uh that coach cetti will definitely talk about wanting to work on with his team penalties is probably the the biggest uh the most glaring issue with with that but even with that Indiana eight offensive penalties out of the nine on the day but they still put 31 points on the board still put over 200 nearly 250 rushing yards on the uh on the ground and uh close to 200 yards passing uh so it was a a good performance by the offense especially coming out in this first game they uh ran the ball extraordinarily well you've got a couple of running backs that averaged either I don't have the exact stats in front of me now but uh I don't know if they finished over five yards a carry a piece but I know that they were right at that Mark for most of the game uh and that's a great sign to see Indiana could not run the ball across the street last year and today put nearly 250 yards on the board the uh quarterback Curtis War he looked very comfortable from the get-go he threw for 180 and a touchdown today so the offense looked good the defense looked pretty good all day as well they give up a touchdown in the waning moments of the first half and looked like maybe teue caught up to him for a second but uh they end up holding FIU to under 200 yards we'll talk about all this coach Griffith is with us Mitchell Paige will be joining us as well uh here shortly but Indiana kicking the season off and the Kurt cetti ERA with a victory over Florida International coach Griffith uh pretty much what we thought we'd see uh I don't know exactly if if I had it planned out but uh the score I picked for the today was 35-10 and and Indiana would probably have scored more than that if they had not had the penalties they had on offense yeah they they had they left some points out there with some you know opportunities whether it be a drop pass or overthrown pass or whatever it may be um I uh running backs uh let's see they averaged about let's see lotton 4.6 Ellison 6.8 those are the predominant two that ran today and uh I just thought they were phenomenal I do think they've got a good running back room um you said about Curtis Curtis was good um he looked like a true veteran quarterback uh directing the offense he did well avoiding the rush because there was a lot of times he was under pressure um but offensively Run game solid pass game some things to work on and I said earlier defense I thought played their light played lights out I I really did they held them to 100 and I think it was 180 some yards in total offense and pretty darn good performance by a defense that uh did a lot of things out there uh Jim I thought they did a great job moving around and disguising things and cost some chaos yeah uh they they caused a lot of headaches for the quarterback of f iiu uh Keon uh Jenkins and he was uh out there moving around when you've got a mobile quarterback like that that can get dangerous but for the most part they kept him in check like I said they they hold FIU to under 200 yards total offense that's that's big I I don't care who you're playing that's that's that's big boy football there um and other than the the the end of the second half were like I think they got tired maybe uh the the humidity was out here not quite used to it just yet but other than that they came back in the second half stayed strong didn't give up uh big plays made a big play they got the interception the only turnover of the game so Indiana gets a turnover to start thing start this season off as well so they're plus one in that category but most importantly they're plus one in the win loss category starting one and0 and that's the the most important thing coach well we all say it a win is a win is a win uh it's hard to win it's it's a difficult task to accomplish you know each and every Saturday to be perfect and that's the thing that you're going to get with Coach STI he is not going to accept the fact that they were laxidasical that last seven minutes in the second half uh Indiana's defense uh was four of 13 on third downs one of four on Fourth downs but on that third down conversion I bet you three of those conversions on third down came in that final drive before half that led to the score because the defense had chances to get off the field and just didn't make the play but uh yeah I mean it checked all the boxes from the first game with what you wanted to do with a team that is not in the category that you are you 32 minutes in time of possession uh you ran the ball good you threw the ball with efficiency and percentage and high percentage and like you said the most important thing is you get a win and and you're gonna not you're not canceling practice on Monday absolutely and uh we kind of had a uh re reboot on the start so and I forgot to say hey welcome everybody Welcome to the hard truth Indiana football postgame show with Indiana Sports be glad to have hard truth distilling on is our title sponsor not just for the Indiana football postgame shows but they are our new studio sponsor as well for uh Indiana Sports Pete so looking forward to uh doing more with the hard truth and bringing you the hard truth every week and every day during the week on Indiana Sports beat uh what a great place that is over there if you haven't been to their main location in Nashville in Brown County where they do all the wonderful things like make that sweet Mash Bourbon and Rye whiskies uh made from grain to Glass baby and if you're not a bourbon Drinker you can uh jump on their uh hard truth toasted coconut rum which sounds yum uh but yeah they uh great products and local right here baby it's Indiana stuff the hard truth and we're going to bring you the hard truth luckily today not a lot of hard truth to bring coach uh it everything worked out like I said uh like the coaches would hope that they would they got through the game injuryf free Donovan mccauly was not medically really cleared to play today coach zetti said and I think he maybe did a little bit but uh ended up in the tent for a while so they're not ready to cut him loose just yet but for the most part I think they got through this injury free we didn't see anything uh pop up that's always a very very important stat of course because you got to have the most important ability is availability and uh or game one you know we we've seen teams lose their quarterbacks in game one here this year already so uh very very important getting through that healthy but most importantly for this team to start putting this stuff down because H most of them are new coach uh most of these guys are not JMU guys the ones that are are great but even them they still adjusting uh someone asked coach about his his offense how much of the offense have we seen well his response was the offense changes week to week depending upon the opponent so I don't know that he showed us a lot to be honest with you I think that's part of why in combination of those offensive penalties in the second half I also think that they were just there's not a lot that you're going to do you're up you're already up a couple touchdowns and you're like yeah I'm not there's no reason to show things at this juncture of the Season yeah and I think what he was trying to say is that our offense is in we just go back and determine what we're going to do against this opponent and what we do best and I think that's what you saw today based upon what they did now they didn't do a lot of exotic things or crazy things where you had people moving all over the yard but you know in the first half I thought Shannon did a good job of getting into a rhythm and getting the offense going on all cylinders Run game pass game and he was able to you know mix things up with personnel and some motions they had the bit nice reverse that he called there when they got a little bit over happppy on the backside and um you could see when that happens this team's pretty darn good when they can stay in that Rhythm and I thought he did a pretty darn good job in that first half and then of course they got it going in the second half some a little bit there but uh um like I said it's a it's a good start um and uh like you mentioned earlier you're going to see your best improvement from week one to week two especially offensively speaking so a lot of positives and a lot of things that you need to work on to get better well Charlie Miller was in town for the IU basketball reunion today amongst a lot of other guys as well he just made a comment up there under five lefts uh post I think I just emailed you Charlie uh to your email so you can jump on here whenever you get that love to have you jump on wherever you are out there somewhere uh probably over closer to uh Alum the uh Assembly Hall um Jaylen Harrison on a visit today as well so a lot going on here in Bloomington today I was disappointed in the crowd coach uh probably about 30,000 here and the students did great showing up but they were gone before halftime and coach cetti was asked about it and he said you know what I've made my statement about that and he's and I get it he's not gonna sit there and beg people to come he's gonna put a football team on the field they're gonna play if you want to come great if you don't he don't have time for you that's yeah not that he doesn't not that it's not part of his job to maybe do the little bit of that but at at a certain point you have to ask what is it that you want what is it that you're looking to see um they won today they they won easily today they look good from the start coming out things got styed a little bit there but that's the first game that happens so I would certainly hope to see although next week's game is a Friday night game a high school night which sucks yeah it's a night game I don't know if that will how that's going to affect the crowd uh being a Friday night game but the these crowds have got to get better it they just have to and uh I see Charlie jumping on and there's Mitchell Paige we're gonna have a an All-Star group get together here today man look at this yeah the the crowd aspect of things is a uh issue with you know it's for whatever reason it's a tradition that goes way back and it doesn't matter which year it is or who's playing who but uh winning has a tendency to to cure some of that and once you put a few in the bucket excitement starts to grow you'll see the crowd maybe from a student standpoint stay in for four quarters or I say lock the damn Gates and don't let them leave agree I guarantee Mitchell agrees Charlie Miller on with us as well Charlie in town along with five lefts how are you my man uh how was The Reunion Indiana basketball [Music] reunion can you hear us Charlie I'm doing well I love that idea I love that idea you gotta sign a waiver lock the gates the gates don't open up until the third quarter the gates don't open the third quarter and you can start leaving but you still got to stay in game over here's my thoughts fellas now you're right you gotta win we know that right but but then also now not being old school to me with the current student body the way now people think you got to put that out there and call their ass out excuse my language man you got to call them out stop leaving stay in support because because yeah you're winning that's good the first couple games but we need you as the 12th man and you don't realize the value of that when you having those tough games it just can't be we win by 20 we lose by 20 he can't do that we need your support that 12thman aspect is big logically so yeah I saw it I was there and then all of a sudden at half everybody started leaving and I'm like man you gotta stay in support because that's great but now you're gonna go also into that mindset of oh yeah we win against FIU but what about next week what no stay stay and just like we're trying to play the next freaking play I wanted to say something different I caught myself yeah stay after a win stay exactly that's that's so I'm I'm with you guys I appreciate it and Mitchell a former Indiana football player I know that he knows what we're talking about but they uh Mitchell you are as big a football fan IU fan right now as there are I saw your tweets you were fired up and everything went well I I'm disappointed in the crowd man I'm just disappointed yeah uh I tweeted about it a little bit already but as I've thought about you think about where Indiana football's been in the last two seasons I had some people responding to me that you know like well it was it wasn't a close game we were blowing them out we're same old Indiana nothing's really changed whatever it is and I'm thinking think about the last two seasons we talked about this on Friday Jim it felt like we were just hoping they would go out and compete show some kind of light and now you got a team that's making plays yeah they were sloppy they had a bunch of silly penalties they made did some things that are probably not going to happen a couple weeks from now didn't look pretty but they dominated the game it was never in question how often do you get to feel like that as a fan where you can just sit back and enjoy being in the stadium you're gonna win You're Gonna Leave happy after the last two seasons I don't know how you could I would never leave the stadium maybe ever again after a feeling like that because of how bad it's been the last couple years you finally get to just watch and enjoy winning and who knows what happens the rest of the year I think there's going to be a ton a ton of improvement but it just it feels like for the stadium to look like that it was almost a slap in the face to the players I know I felt it when I was there uh I played in a game against Ohio State when they were one or two in the country we had an onside kick down seven with a minute left in the game and there was a thousand people in The Stance I don't know where that other noise is coming from by the way Sor I apologize I don't know where that other noise is coming from oh it's all good um Charlie if you you can't stay I'd understand but I definitely want to hook up with you when we're done here but uh what was uh you got to come in and have the uh reunion today with players and uh did you meet with Jaylen harelson by the way I did I did I met with him his his family um indications looking great but you never know because it was it was a lot of dog and pony show let's just keep it real um it was some good timing around that because you had nine generations of IU Hoops in town nine 1954 was that right 195 54 was the first class was that was that of what of at our reunion yes 1954 so you had nine classes so to show that tradition um it's a high chance of of him becoming and also watching like again for me the dog and pony show because he had the uniform on walking to take it was like almost a bottle service at a club guys seriously it's like seriously likeing Charlie it was like a body it's all different I'm not old I guess I'm old school CA C he was walking and you had speakers behind him everybody like what's going on I'm like like carrying the speakers behind him carrying the speakers behind him uh music blaring and we got he had the uniform on I'm like okay I get it but I'm all good but but I want to transition this because I don't want to lose out on what we're doing at the football this about football I'm hoping I'm hoping that you got a you got a new sheriff in town with the head coach I'm hoping that we become bold and daring and and start telling students stay I mean so what so what so what if it doesn't work out where you start losing but at least start asking them to come stay stay start asking to stay because you're gonna have to do that like you just said earlier it's like tweeting yeah we were winning yeah but like so what like you don't realize the value of people being in stands and you're still on the road as a as a visiting team I don't care if you're out State I don't care whoever you are you're on the road and you never know what can happen in the Big 10 you never know what can happen when you get galvanized by a crowd and that's the turning point to me it's gonna come from down with yeah the players and the coaches but it's the Fanfare I saw it and witnessed it man it it was um man I just wish they like I wish fans understand like stay stay at those games it's amazing people don't understand how valuable that is 24 to7 31 to7 whatever it is yeah how valuable whether you're the backups getting in the game at the very end just the confidence it gives you to have a full Stadium of your colors people cheering for you the confidence that it gives you going into next week in the week you just don't understand how much that matters I mean I can remember games where I'd come out at halftime we are winning the game and the stadium is empty and we're not beating everybody saying well it's FIU blah blah I don't care we're playing Michigan State Michigan toe-to-toe the double overtime game against Michigan if you look at the this is the game I dropped the ball I never forget it um we're in double overtime if you look at the stands double overtime Michigan 16th ranked team in the country maybe half full it doesn't make any sense I don't understand it uh I and it happens nowhere else I watched Florida in Miami today while Indiana was playing Florida's down by four touchdowns pretty much the whole game the Stadium's full until two minutes left in the game yeah and makes this comment that they will once it's proven and Indiana's playing an even oppent difference I say hor crap to that I'm like anybody can do that anybody exactly cuz like like for example okay if you support before it's proven now we don't have to go into Fair weathers we're only here because we're winning no start now because now the story is more significant it's more relevant to say we started supportting all of a sudden they got galvanized all of a sudden Synergy happened that has to that has to be the case and that's gonna start building up your recruits yes especially with the nil deal R situation we Haven even we talk about that's a great point early because they had 42 I think guys visiting today yes already but that means you've got 32 guys visiting that and they're gonna look around I'm gonna wonder if FIU doesn't get 30,000 well check it out put it this way put this way Pitbull funny story Pitbull just actually donated a lot of money millions of dollars to FIU Stadium yes it's not called Pitbull stadi right Pitbull Charlie Miller six separation he went to my high school okay okay so I I miss Pitbull as a player but he played basketball but he knows of me I know of him we got a great mutual friend think about that okay Pitbull did this oh blah blah blah but okay I can come in that F you and meet Pitbull that's a big deal for a kid because you never know what that's gonna par into if it's gonna pour into anything like what we have around here in Bloomington I'm in Bloomington right now like what we have built here like I don't care about tradition I don't care we have a new regime we have a new system built from that you can't go off tradition you cannot how about you support it and then after a year or two say whatever like let's start start a new start a Begin Again Begin Again because that's going to help you get the players that you can that you can now let's say it I almost say something excuse my leg it it let's freaking buy him it is what it is we can buy him now it's back in the day you had to go you know the the buffal Lou and get them some chicken wings now you can buy them you can get them right here now you get buffal Lou chicken wings right here at the stadium as I saw today I'm so mad you guys don't start me I I don't want to take over this I don't want to start this today o over all the [ __ ] I excuse my language I don't want to see all that stuff outside today and and people talking about how much you would have made don't don't stop me on that I'm not on that that's why I'm drinking water right now I I I couldn't go into therapy I couldn't go into therapy after all this money I'm hearing what's going around here in Bloomington yeah I think I I got two points I want to make yes sir the recruiting aspect is one of the most important things that nobody talks about correct correct I it's also funny uh this is just an observation and fans are gonna get mad at what I'm about to say but I'm gonna say it anyways fans are always so quick to point the finger when the coach is messing up player drops a ball but as soon as you point the finger at them for leaving the game at Halftime when we're winning by 30 points it's oh well there's no tradition oh it was too hot oh it's this oh it was that oh they got all these excuses but as soon as Indiana stumbles a little bit they have eight penalties now all of a sudden we're undisciplined or we get a holding penalty or a silly personal foul whatever it is they point point point how stupid are we that's one of my favorite Parts about this argument none none of these no really none of these people have really been in the arena and understand what it's really like but they point point point and when it's time to do the thumb then they get all defensive and I think that's a big problem uh here's a that I want to again just a thought because Jim knows I'm a thinker okay what what what they need to do probably is do a thorough almost like a documentary on game prep from minute one to hour 75 to let people know no I know but even if but but but to give people an opportunity to understand how much prepping organization structure coaches the the schemes the plays like to have a real appreciation for it's not just down set hut that's what I me why I don't want to see it guilty now like oh whatever oh you're going to fault fight we're talking about fault fighting Matt right I get you but like see the 70 hours put in for that one game they don't want to be practice seven a spring ball I want to see you say the same thing now yeah same thing to me yeah about no discipline right same thing to me this is workout 35 of winter workouts and it's four degrees outside come on man we get 12 Saturdays and usually only six home games right these guys work 365 days a year for six this year we're lucky get eight Saturdays sure for 60 Minutes yep that's it and it's G again come on man Matt don't don't Matt we we need to have a call on our own man hour of practice I got 70 guys out here I gota go on the same page yes come on that's what that's what I'm saying they need to drop a documentary like y'all leing okay are you doing this every week in school are you are you doing the same thing for your homework probably are you are you are you showing up just winging it like this is what we're doing win or lose like support this that's that to me is the preparation man that's that's the part I just wish you know that people get to understand how much goes until that game and you got to do that now for the next game that starts tomorrow probably well you know for the coaches is tonight it the coaches are probably already in meetings you know that talk you know ask coach there you know what happens there somebody's breaking down tape already oh it's already broken down for you they've got the out looking at the game innercut you know and making marks on the on the on their iPads of what went right what went wrong so they're sending those uh notes to the players right now as eating dinner with their know you know that and the player sitting there going I'm in trouble Sunday but but then then the player to your point will start making an adjustment because it becomes a part of their nature now they're understanding how the best ability in the world is adaptability that's what it's about adaptability next play yeah and you see you see so much improvement week one to week two in college football it it felt like a brand new staff with brand new schemes and brand new players like 20% of the time yep which is actually pretty good if you think about it I mean this is a completely different program completely revamped all new coaches all new everything top to bottom and to come out and really control the game and you can say dominant whatever the game was under control it never felt like Florida International was going to win the game they were in control they made some mistakes but it never got in out to be able to do that with how many changes they had they're just going to be so much better next week you get a western Illinois team that's going to be reeling they got beat up a little bit this week and you get ready for a big challenge in week three now they're going to talk all Western Illinois all Western Illinois we're the media we have the advantage of being able to talk about what lies ahead because all of this is really building up to going out to Los Angeles and playing UCLA and making a statement in the Big 10 and fans can point to that is oh well beat you CLA now we're going to come whatever but you start stacking these things over and over again Jim and I talked about this yesterday on your show it's all about momentum you have a game like this where you really don't play great you're good you're as good I think as we could have hoped you stack good plays second half gets you know whatever but you learn from it now next week you go out to Western Illinois hopefully Blitz them now you've got more momentum you got more confidence you corrected some of the things from this week go out to UCLA who knows what's going to happen with them in Hawaii tonight but they don't have that second week to make the jump they've got two weeks to kind of dwell on what's happening in week one after a long trip out to Hawaii you catch them kind of in a weird time now you take it to them you saw a lot of reasons to believe that Indiana can take it to a team like UCLA they got a lot of speed I think there's some guys that maybe we didn't talk about as much leading up to the season that showed some serious ability uh thinking about miles price mostly uh I think he's got a serious serious upside um but you start stacking these things up you go back to the favorable schedule and that's exactly what I wanted to see out of Indiana was just a commanding commanding performance start to finish who cares it didn't end up 50 to nothing it was never never in doubt that's all you can ask for game one of a brand new coach brand new Rim top to bottom really expect a massive jump uh from week two to week two Charlie appreciate you my friend I know you five gotta get going but send me a text where you're going I want to hook up with you hav't got to see you it what's itex doing too much man tell people I'm yeah okay I'll send you a text message I appreciate you my friend just talking hey I'm sorry to interrupt Shannon Matt I appreciate it Jim love you always to you guys and um you know my last two cents on that I'm hoping they get do we put the Jets at the practice so we can practice with that noise because you go out to LA now again that's why I want fans because you get used to it in practice so when you play your condition yeah you get that crowd when you don't get you don't stand that crowd noise I remember playing against Kansas my freshman year I couldn't hear myself think that was a real thing guys I couldn't hear myself think we played same thing I turned back to get the play my vision went blurry we had to call time out you need the crowd you need that to make those real time adjustments because is real so guys I appreciate you thank you for allowing me to hop on Jim I'll let you know where I'm at man I appreciate you appreciate you Charlie my friend thank you sir you guys have a good one we'll see uh see those guys later okay now let's find some stuff besides a crowd to talk about for a a game one we we know what most of the things worked right we know what didn't work the it was just penalties for the most part uh that slowed the offense down defense was good pretty much 85% of the day they had that let down at the end of the half a little bit I don't know if that was fatigue or if they just caught him at the right spot uh but they caught him uh but they bounced back in the second half and shut him down they didn't give up a point held him to less than 200 yards for the game so that's pretty good defensively to hold a team to that that few of points and that few of yards yeah and I again I think the defense played lights out today Aiden Fischer was all over the place the defensive line did what they needed to do by putting pressure at the times they needed to get pressure and they did a great job in the Run game up front and really didn't give them much in that Arena either now talking about what to expect moving forward when they come in to watch film you hope that every kid comes in into that video room leaves their egole at the door yeah you won but let's strive for better this is where the kids from James Madison are going to come in and say you guys you know this is what to expect you won but it didn't you didn't win in the fashion that we're accustomed to and we're going to take you to that level and you hope that every kid comes in there with that mindset that I'm G to get better at what I need to get better at so that I can elevate my play along with my buddies play so that we can become a better team and that's the difference between really good teams and average teams the really good teams come in each and every day and figure out a way to get better and average teams you don't stay the same you either get better you get worse and the average teams start tailing off and that's the difference that's the difference between a team that's eight and three you know 10- two and a team that's six and six it's the difference Mitchell yeah I mean it's you're exactly right talking about the guys from JMU because what Indiana's really missed is having dudes that have done it before and know what it looks like to have a win that maybe wasn't your best and then make a massive jump and improve dramatically to either week two or whatever the following week is and having guys from James Madison that have won a ton of games and understand what winning football is and understand that winning football happens on Sunday and meetings when you're prepping for the next game um I it's a huge Advantage for Indiana and I I really do think you're going to see a massive Improvement hopefully open up the Playbook Big Time against Western Illinois let's really spit it around keep imposing uh on the offensive line I thought we were great blocking I really did there was some a couple things that you got to clean up of course but uh we're bigger than them and prove it and we kind of did today so I I just hard truth yeah I I'm excited because I and I'll just kind of I guess I already said it but but there was so many new things there's so much hype coach Signet has talked a big game all off season you had to come out and handle your business didn't have to be perfect didn't have to score 100 points but they handled their business the way that they needed to this needed to be a game that as soon as it kicked off it felt like it was over uh and it felt like that Aiden Fischer is I me we I can't remember maybe Micah mcfaden played this way but just all over the field making plays felt like he was in every tackle or right there around it he's commanding a defense that's only going to get better uh and I thought Curtis roor did exactly what we needed him to do uh maintain right yeah he's just solid he's not gonna do anything flashy but he's not gonna throw it to the other team he's not gonna win the and he's gonna get better this was his first game at Indiana under this offense so going to get better he's going to get better and better they handled their business now go to week two and get better exactly I mean that's that's all you can do they had some issues you go fix them that's what week one is for besides winning but uh they accomplished that they got it done and I think they did it in a pretty good fashion for you when you consider everything knew every this these guys have been together since last December period uh a majority of the offensive yards came I think it was not JMU guys but transfers overall I'm trying to remember but it was either transfers or JMU guys accounted for 300 yards of the 400 I think yeah yeah and that that doesn't surprise me with how many new faces there were uh hopefully Donovan McCully is okay look like maybe a little Stinger um something monit something to monitor obviously I don't think it's anything serious yeah something to monitor he's I think got as much upside as anybody in the wide receiver room and we didn't see Indiana go down field much basically at all today I don't know that we would have but uh without him but you've got a couple other targets that they could reach I don't know that they're wanting to show that right now yeah they they handled their business they did exactly what they needed to do control the ball control the game Put It Out Of Reach early get reps on offense at the things that we do and just get better and I I think next week will be a big jump and obviously two weeks from now is the one that you really Circle as a fan and what else abolutely coach your last uh what are your last thoughts today no I think the best thing is is you know kind of what Mitchell summarized there and we've all summarized about today's game it's a win you put it in the win column you put it to bed you figure out what you can do to be better each and every day control the controllables you know the things that cetti says those are the truth you control the controllables and that's you and your effort alone and as long as we're all operating on the same cylinders in effort category we'll be pretty darn good but if we got a guy that's not given everything each and every day we got problems so I think today was a good step
