goodness Intercept in all the hood that had my back I thank y'all this season marks the beginning of a new chapter Big 10 is getting even bigger Texas know you enter the SEC the college football playoff is expanding but with change comes opportunity welcome home America college football is back yes it is here hey 30 minutes before kickoff you probably expect fans to be in the seats well uh there's a problem right now in Minneapolis there's a weather delay between Minneapolis North Carolina and Minnesota is now scheduled for nine Eastern Time to kickoff instead of the 8 Eastern time kickoff schedule time but we we are here on time getting you ready for another 24 college football season Mike Hill Manu AO and the coach Chris Peterson hanging out with you we are so excited to bring you the best in college football throughout the year right here on FS1 and on FB We Begin our season with the headlines that's been making news in the All Season biggest news conference real Lin shaking up the entire landscape of the sport 15 FBS program switch conferences this off season including Texas and Oklahoma going to the SEC Oregon Washington USC and UCLA going to the big 10 the college football playoff expands from four to 12 teams this season the five highest ranked conference Champs and seven at large selections will comprise the field with the top four seeds receiving buys and we already have a major upset in the books with for the state going all the way to Island last weekend Georgia Tech an improved defense doing the job against them the knows try to bounce back on Monday against Boston College hey after missing last year's playoff Jo returns at number one of course they won the previous two championships before last year only lost one time to Alabama and Alabama begins life after Nick Sav as kayin dor leaves Washington takes over there and Ohio State is all in after a monster All Season all those transfers and Chiron Moore he did a great job as an in room last year replaces Jim Harbaugh on a permanent basis for the reigning Champions man wo man it's a lot to get into man we got a lot to keep our eye on in 2024 we're just getting started real line key players the playoffs man a lot to be watching a lot man a lot give me the storyline that most intrigues you though it's simple new faces and new places I'm looking at USC I'm looking at Oregon I'm looking at Texas I'm looking at Oklahoma the new faces and new places USC will you adjust to the Big 10 or will you make the big 10 adjust to you will you figure out how to deal with the Wisconsin's how to deal with the Iowa how to deal with the Smash Mouth game or will you force their hand and make them figure out how to deal with the tempo how to deal with with the hurry up how to deal with the no huddle how to deal with all of the things that come with Lincoln Riley and Miller Moss's brand of football it's very fascinating when you were a player and you're playing a different brand of football coach I vividly remember when I was playing the likes of Texas Tech I would cut weight that week usually playing at about 235 I might cut to 229 230 that week when playing a more heavy branded run type of Team Mike I'm getting up to 238 239 240 so the new faces and the new places all about adjustments there's going to be some adjusting on those long plane rides trying to find each other as well so I think the thing that I'm most excited about is this 12 team tournament the playoff system I can't believe it's been 10 years it's taken us this long to get 12 teams in I think it's going to be fabulous it's going to be exciting there's going to be more fan bases debating it all year long I think the conference championships are going to be more intriguing now you know you get you get that byy when you win you're the highest ranked team coming out I mean I know as a coach I'd give my right arm to have a buy going into those playoffs get our guys healthy game plan the heck out of it it'll be awesome is there pressure more pressure on the committee this year I think there could be especially on that back end you know usually you're debating one or two teams where they're going to get in now you know it's going to look different that that that that nine through 12 and then there's probably going to be four other teams and I think strength of schedule which has always been an issue is going to become more of an issue I mean that the schedule that the sec's playing that the big 10's playing a is that the same as AC I just think there's going to be some serious discussions this is what we love college football sir never know what's going to happen we always talk about the big teams Ohio States Alabama Georgia is going to be there what teams like Minnesota make a run in North Carolina who could shock the world who knows right Georgia anybody we're getting you ready for North Carolina Minnesota coming up of course they're in the weather delay right now but right now we're going to send it out to Allison Williams who's standing by with the oldest head coach in fps right now uh and our show's former coach m brown Coach Brown happy week one the start of a new College football season always a lot of excitement and a lot of questions for your Tar Heels the biggest question is who is going to start at quarterback what have you decided between Max Johnson and Conor Harold Allison we're lucky to be playing first you come out and you say it's at 7 o'clock and then they say no it's an hour and a half delay it's an hour delay so Sudden Change these kids are incredible coaches are incredible fans what what a great way to start the season we're going to let everybody know when our quarterback walks out on the field because we think that's for the best of our advantage we're planning on playing both theight but the game will dictate that um and neither one of them have played a whole lot with this offense and with us so it'll be really interesting to see all right so we'll see what happens on offense on defense I know you want to see Improvement this year you brought in new defensive coordinator Jeff Collins what are you looking for from the defense specifically tonight I want us to be look complicated and be simple I want us to be aggressive I want us to come after them but I want us to make few minals we've had too many Ms that led to explosives fewer mistakes more aggressive aggessive and force some turnovers now this is the part where I would usually throw it back to the guys in the studio but I'm going to let you do that since there's somebody back there you know pretty well well there's an All-American Emanuel AO who put me in the Hall of Fame that's sitting there you better talk nice about me tonight too so I'll throw it back to you Emanuel oh Matt Brown absolutely a legend I texted him two days ago on his birthday when he turned 73 and I said coach thank you for everything you've done for me I love you coach and he wished me in my family well that is a coach that transcends the game of football and impacts lives and Men M Brown's a big reason why you're sitting right here today absolutely man great head coach uh still plenty more to do on this show getting you ready for Minnesota and North Carolina colge B Evolution has never been more apparent with everything that's going on realignment and player empowerment are there changes are they good for the sport though we going to ask that question Golden Goal for head coach PJ Fleck brings energy everywhere he goes we'll take a closer look at his impact on this Minnesota program as he tries to team the road the boat and once again North Carolina Minnesota now scheduled for 9 Eastern after a 1H hour delay because of weather more college coming somebody's coming coming let's do [Music] it dude are you crying the stage is set there are Clues everywhere is that you guys are all missing the biggest crew I know you're expecting football at the top of the hour but uh North Carolina Minnesota is now scheduled for 9 Eastern due to a weather delay the college football landscape will look very different this fall from a new expanding playoff format to conference realignment our Chris the be felica has more want to expect in this season of change forget everything you thought you knew about college football it's all Nostalgia now this is a new era of college football everybody is expanding the last year has brought seismic change to the sport most notably with conference realignment where a power four now exists the Pack 12 is no more its members outside of Oregon State and Washington State have been dispersed to the Big 10 Big 12 and ACC SMU also found a home in the new look ACC while Oklahoma and Texas moved to the SEC the college football playoff Now features 12 teams where the five highest ranked Conference champions receive automatic bids with the top four seeds also earning a first round buy the true beauty of the new look playoff opening round games on campus at the sight of the higher SE seeds 5 six seven and eight will host first round playoff games and playoff access is now guaranteed to the highest ranked champion of a non power 4 League the evolution of the transfer portal and name image and likeness has given players control like they've never had before want to play somewhere else enter your name in the transfer portal where schools will see you're open for recruitment players are also now free to earn comp compens ation through nil got all that great if you don't no worries no quiz will be given a lot of changes including in the rules to uh one player on the field for each team will be able to hear from their coach and their helmet up to the 15c mark in the play clock uh there will be an automatic timeout with two minutes to go in the second and fourth quarters they calling it The two-minute timeout not the two-minute warning and teams will have the option to use tablets for in-game video something I know poach PE really loves as we welcome you inside our brand new spacious I love it college football playroom nice here cave just like this film room this is uh part of ao's house if you didn't know it not he allowed us to do this man thanks for inviting us over thank you man thank you for the change we had to have a change of setting sometimes man in our film room uh everything that we talked about man the changes in the offseason whatever we've seen over the last couple of seasons from the playoffs to the transfer portal is it good or bad for football yes to both I mean it is there's a lot of good I mean that playoff's going to be awesome payers players getting paid I think it's about time for that type of stuff but I do think with so much money going going towards football that you're going to really start to see some of the separation between the halves and the have knots I've just felt that there's so much money going to these power conferences the group of fives it's going to be very very hard for them to keep up and I think that's one of the beautiful things about college football is The Underdogs and the small guys having a chance to battle the big guys that's very well said I think it's great for the athletes today I think it's terrible for them tomorrow okay at the University of Texas I didn't start as a freshman I I rotated in as a sophomore but the resilien see that built in me as a football player and as a man it paid dividends years and years and years later and this day in age if you're not starting instantly oh just go transfer oh if you're not St for the athletes today you can get a lot more money you can play instantly back in the day you had to sit out a year but I don't know Mike if it's great for the athletes tomorrow because how will that actually impact them going forward how will that impact them as men as they navigate things especially talking football I agree wholeheartedly and then you throw money into that and the pole is so strong to transfer you know things didn't go exactly like I thought I didn't get quite the Reps I didn't get quite the balls I thought I was going to get and then somebody's going to give me a little more money that doesn't mean that's necessar the best thing to do but I think the poll is so strong that sometimes guys are going to make decisions for not the best reason let's let's talk about one of the players that you just saw on your screen the quarterback Quinn y he was a South Lake Carol remember he let go of his senior year in high school gentlemen to go to Ohio State I just told y'all he's from Texas went to Ohio State because word on the street was he was getting a million dollars in an nil deal left Ohio State to go back to Texas and now he's been in Texas for the last several years I just wonder how would his journey have been without nil would he have finished out a senior year in high school then would he have just gone to Texas the entire time and would he have had a more stable collegiate career obviously it still worked out for him last year goes to the playoffs leads Texas to the playoffs for the first time ever but you just wonder how is this impacting the psyche of men how is this impacting their self-esteem think of dju young he's at Clemson he doesn't work out at Clemson then he goes to Oregon state it kind of works out at Oregon State then he goes to Florida State thus far through one week it seems a demise there it's just a lot for these kids I love it I love love it I everything that the good and the bad and every and difference but haven't we gotten to the point where we can also admit that college football is a business that we're this is a business now you know what I mean I mean it's been a business maybe for a long time for the teams and for the conferences or whatever now the players are being involved so when you throw money in there how can it be too bad for them when putting everything on the line for themselves I mean I know they want to go to the NFL I know they want to get an education but it's also about what's best for them yeah and it is about business and I think you're seeing more and more of that uh and and and and it's just there's College athletics is trying to thread this needle between like professional type Sports and amateur Athletics on the same campus and it's almost impossible to do and I think that's really the problem that so many administrators and everybody going forward is figuring out how is this going to go because every time they turn around someone's about ready to get sued all right so let me let me let me break this down before we go uh unless they at unless they get some kind of salary cap or whatever it's going to continue to go like this collective bargaining collective bargaining something to balance out the scale so in five years if we continue to go down this road where will college football be I can confidently say I have no idea yeah anybody saying anything with confidence is lying to you and would be lying to y'all to my left and to my right coach there's no way to have an idea where college football will go I know it will still be captivating I know fans will still watch I know we will still be here talking about it but I canot not guarantee coach where it goes I think there might be a breakaway again of the biggest and baddest and best football programs and they might that might help everything so we're talking about like two conferences two major conferences and everything else and everything and man conferences might be 40 teams I don't know but something like that more like an NFL model in a sense all right you know like you said I think it would be captivating and people will still continue to watch doubt speaking of watch uh plenty of change coming soon for uh this man right here no doubt about it well look Tuesday y'all better do this one thing cat the premier of my new show the facility I will be joined by Eagles alltime rushing leader Lesean Shady McCoy James Jones Chase Danel you do not want to miss this brand new show that's 10: a.m. eastern on FS1 it's [Music] you know what's brilliant boring think about it boring is The Unsung Catalyst for bold what straps gold to a rocket and hurdles it into space boring does boring makes vacations happen early retirement is possible and startups start up because it's smart dependable and steady all words you want from your bank for nearly 160 years PNC Bank has been brilliantly boring so you can be happily fulfilled which is pretty I'm recruiting fans who stay focused and never miss a play I'm always watching always looking to reward more full-time fans Wendy's has new Saucy nugs and if Wendy's found a way to make their nugs even better anything is sa for a whole new way to nug got to be Wendy's you found the right model for sure now how can you be sure you're getting the right deal I have to talk to my besty hey girl history look for me and stop overpaying shop at the allnew carfax.com come okay limo you said it then as I spike it I'll tell them how Liberty Mutual customizes car insurance so they only pay for what they need got it did you get that only pay for what you need liyy liyy I'm the model I'm always watching always looking 23b 23c to reward more full-time fans pen State takes on West Virginia it's big Saturday only on the fox hey Saturday big noon kickoff is back the crew heads to Morgantown to get you ready for a huge match up between eighth ranked Penn State and West Virginia here's a sneak peek of Brady Quinn sit down with NY Lon head coach James Franklin 60,000 strong have waited a long time for this one we got Penn State headed to take on West Virginia talk to me about that match up to start off the season it's a tough place I mean it's a hornets nest Morgantown West Virginia they love their team there's no NFL it's right it's West Virginia football so week one it' be a heck of a challenge you talk about you know the regional aspect there's some history there between the two schools but we could be more excited about opening with you guys it's going to be awesome and of course you can catch the full interview on big noon kickoff Saturday at 10 Eastern on Fox hey guys uh if you retroactively apply this year's college football playoff format to the last 10 years Penn State would have made the playoffs six of those years the last six years so how will this expanded playoff this 12 team playoff format this year help Penn State oh it's going to help them there's no question I mean when you get 12 in and they just missing out Jame Franklin has built a nice program there he just can't seem to get over the Ohio State Michigan riddle MH it's too bad he's not playing Michigan this year because he'd beat him this year yeah but I have no doubt that they're going to get in this year but I will say this I think and maybe not this year because the 12 teams so new and exciting I still think it's going to be a little bit like basketball I think if you don't get into that final four people are going to be like that's where the real teams are I can see that that's well said I think finally state will be the bride instead of the bridesmaid they're always attending Ohio State's wedding and attending Michigan's wedding as they watch Michigan and Ohio State in the college football playoffs and in the Big 10 championship game but finally I believe Penn State will get to attend their own as they will make it into the playoffs so I think for Penn State it will do a lot for the ego of the program and a lot for the confidence on campus but how in the world are the players going to adjust to all of the new faces in that building real quickly man Oregon's going to be good Ohio State's going to be good about Michigan where Penn State finish in the Big 10 this year I think third third fourth o behind Michigan we'll see what happens all right one ranked team already already in action tonight 24th ranked NC State and a tuneup against Western Carolina before let's go to you you know we going to call audible got AUD you know what that's the new rule you can get uh in your ear up to 15 seconds on the play clock here we go let's go to UCF there New Hampshire UCF second quarter of 6 nothing KJ Jefferson wait a minute that's colle football isn't he a different uni yeah used to be all right now where are we now Howard rers there we go Jan scroggin outside intercepted by Eric Rogers take down back to the crib let's go back back to the CRI look at him high defensive Guy high and tight coach reservation for six please2 yard for the pick six r on top there all right we got Howard we got uh forom Bowling Green still in preseason here seems like Justin pegas on the return breaks free takes it 100 yard for the touchdown somebody get him some oxygen special teams and Bowling Green rolling right now 27 to nothing in and with 16 returning starters from 2023 the Gophers have their sights set on a strong season the charismatic coach Fleck recently caught up with our very own charismatics himself Brady [Applause] Quinn great great job you got to be proud of what you've done in Minnesota as you look forward into 2024 and really the future is is Minnesota where you thought it would be at this point in your tenure absolutely uh this is what we talked about in year one in my introductory press conference was we are going to create cultural sustainability at Minnesota we have 16 of 17 eligible returning starters back from Minnesota after a six and seven season which people are calling disappoined with another bull win I knew there was going to be highs and lows and EV and flows that that just happens but to have all those guys want to come back I think is a credit to our culture and our program that's kind of the you know the player that I am I I take value and and culture in the team so end up being that school for me Max brosmer your your quarterback coming from New Hampshire has had a lot of success there what are your expectations for him coming in this season we need a kid to walk in start Play lead embrace the team know that there's probably not going to be competition that beat you and be mature enough to handle that he did he exceeded All my expectations seems like every single year you guys got a tough match up week one talk to me a little B about the anticipation of going into that matchup versus North Carolina oh we're fired up for game one I'm kind of the walking billboard uh of the North Carolina uh Minnesota game on Fox we're really excited I have a lot of respect for m brown when I was in college I wrote Every 127 division one schools that I wanted to coach and M Brown was one of four that wrote me back and it's in my office to this day framed and Mack has been a great mentor to me over the years uh he's got a really good football team I'm just glad we don't have to go to Chapel Hill this time they get to come to us all right regardless of the type of season he's had at Minnesota he's one thing he's going to get done he's gonna win that ball game win that ball game gonna win that and five in his Seven Seasons he's five and0 in each of his bowl games coach I I think PJ Fleck is a really really good teacher of the game of life I think he's a master motivator I think M uh Minnesota is a job and I think he's done a wonderful job there and I think he is Minnesota football yeah he knows how to roll that boat no matter where he goes all right speaking of boat they almost needed a boat earlier yes they did uh North Carolina once again Minnesota now scheduled for 9 Eastern due to weather we'll hear from the guys call the game Jason Benet and Brock hu right after this Tom Brady makes his Deb in the booth for America's of the we as Theo take on the September 8 on Good Day New York I'm rosan Scot and I'm Kurt man join Rosanna and CT weekdays 7: to 10: a.m. be better okay it just got better buy one of these favorites like a bacon McDouble and get the second one for just a buck it has been a long wait for North Carolina and Minnesota to play college football since last December and the wait got a little bit longer here at Huntington Bank Stadium because of this cell that pushed through there was lightning in the area substantial lightning look Minnesota yesterday had walk through played the Prince song Purple Rain and it got a little bit too literal around here a little while ago so we are pushed back about an hour as of right now Jason bennetti Brock Allison Williams reporting downstairs but a lot of answers coming for both of these coaches PJ Fleck and North Carolina's ma Brown when we do play uh when we get to it yes and we're going to get to it here shortly and there's just so much new and I know every booth and college football here and week number one's going to say the same thing because there's new faces all over the place but we've got new rules we've got new conferences we've got a new playoff format that's going to just create so much cool stuff at the end of the season and in this one well we got new schemes new defensive coordinators new quarterbacks and there is so much newness and I can't wait I'm always this way with the first one can we just get to it and if I'm that way these players and coaches are about 100x more to get this newness out of the way and go play how much of tendency Breakers will we see from two teams that know each other and themselves very well they played last year they know themselves very well as well kick off in about an hour but for now we go to the Joel clat show big noon conversations with Michigan head coach shiron Moore and then his conversation with Matt rule of Nebraska you're going be the next head coach in Michigan and he's just like I'm going to put it in my contract that you know if I ever believe or go somewhere that you're the next head coach of Michigan and he told me that like at the beginning of the year and I was just like what most influential people in the sport talking about the sport globally on in this episode of big noon conversations I talk with the new head coach of the Michigan Wolverines Chiron Moore head coach of the Michigan Wolverine Chiron Moore thanks for joining me man how you doing I'm great I'm doing great I would love for you to take us back in into that moment when you know Coach Harbaugh is is going to move on and and get a job with the Chargers and you know we had talked I know that this was always in your aspirations uh but take me into what it was like for you you know and and when did you realize that this was the move that they were going to make well I was in the Dallas or Houston Airport heading to Dallas recruiting recruiting yeah and I would I just talked to Coach probably like three hours before that and he's kind of like yeah you know I don't know what's going to happen I think it could happen soon it could happen today it could happen tomorrow it could happen next week and I was like okay it's going to happen some point I just got to be ready and um he called you know I saw it I was going through baggage claim or we going through the TSA and uh it popped up on my phone Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers I was like okay and that second phone text messages calls text messages calls uh our ad or assistant ad calls hey you got to come back right now so I did an interview that next day and got the job on Saturday uh press conference was on the recruit Road recruiting on Monday and and that was it and uh it was just humbling experience um what I thought was unique you know having covered this sport for a long time whether it was a guy like me on the outside pounding the table for Chiron Moore immediately thank you or the fan base right players fan base it was in unison and that's very rare you know normally these types of moves come with different factions of people voicing their opinions and wanting different things that wasn't the case here it was universally Chiron Moore is going to be our head coach at Michigan what did that make you feel like when you felt that kind of ground swell of support felt honored uh felt like all the hard work that I put in that with this team and these players had really come to fruition and I mean it was something that you can't really describe but just very humbl to have you know wolver Nation all the people all the players coaches you and you know some media to say hey like he should be the head coach at Michigan and uh it you know when I first got here seven years ago I just want to be the best tight end Coach I could be that's it uh you know at some point wanted to call plays I got chance to do that with our young guys and you know the opportunity to be the head coach here was really not in my mind and so when that when this did take place it was you know very humbling for me when did it enter your mind um probably it entered my mind when Coach Harbaugh told me like you're going to be the next head coach of Michigan when did he tell you that this year he told me that he said I don't know when I don't know what's going to happen the no man can say the future tell the future and uh he gave you a hard ball ISM he give me but like that's how he is he's like that all the time and he just said you're going to be the next head coach in Michigan and uh I was just like what and he's just like I'm going to put it in my contract that you know if I ever believe or go somewhere that you're the next head coach of Michigan and he told me that like at the beginning of the year and I was just like what like I and I I just thought about that and I was just like this man who's a legendary coach who's done it all and we have a chance this year to make a special run is telling me that I'm going to be the next head coach here and like what does that mean that means I got to work my tail off for this man he trusted me in this offense to do everything possible to help e e loud it was volatile it was fun uh invigorating but it was something that our players kind of gravitated towards and they love that they they love being the villain and um it was it was a special special game you can't bring up that game without me bringing up your interview with Jamie at the end to say that this has been a crazy 24 hours for your guys to win on the road in this environment when there were doubts sh what does it mean to you I want to thank the Lord want to thank Coach Harbaugh love you man love man this for you for this universe Unity the president our ad we got the best players best university best alumni in the country love you guys these guys right here these guys right here man these guys did it these guys did it man it's all to him man love you that was an an epic authentic and and very um is one of the best interviews that that she's ever gotten she was so happy by the way at the end of that I know you probably weren't as as happy with it here's what she was happy with when we were talking after the game she was like that was Chiron Chiron was authentic that was how excited he was there was no facade there you know in that moment what was that moment like for you all the emotions that you can feel in anything exciting that's what I felt and the hard work the dedication that the players are put in that Coach Harbaugh is put in this program all came out in that moment and and for our people people out the outside to think you know our players didn't win fairly or do something or do that like it was just kind of like okay bet this is what we're about we're going to go attack the moment we did and now what can you say about us and without our head coach you know we proved ourselves right that we can go in in this big environment and it was a moment that you know was just unfiltered um unfortunately the bad words came out I apologize to my mom so that's okay did you get a text or a call from your mom oh yeah I I mean I got reprimanded a little bit it was my mom and my grandma so I was trying to make sure that they didn't uh they weren't too mad at me but they understood the moment and U the players I think appreciate it because you know I think a lot of in the world today that emotion is kind of seek as weakness and I don't see it as that so you know people can say whatever they want um but we accomplished something pretty special last year the 2023 Michigan football team was the most unique team I've ever been around I don't know how to describe it yeah I want can you describe it what what was it about this group that was so darn special I I can't either I think there's just a love a connection a bond that was unbreakable that you couldn't break you can do whatever you wanted you can talk about them however you want it but like the love the the connection that everybody had in this building was deeper than anything and it just felt like they could not be stopped it was a juggernaut just ready to go every game um any adversity thrown their way they were ready to break it and uh it was something I've never been a part of I I just marveled every time I came in at the unselfish nature you know regardless of the player that we sat with that week you know whether it was sitting with JJ which which we did multiple times whether it was sitting with Blake corm or Donovan Edwards or Jaylen harrold or Chris Jenkins or or Zen you know Zach zenter it didn't matter they they genuinely were completely unselfish and beholden to the team's goals which I like it to be honest it blew my mind the team the team the team that's what we've been built off of and we'll continue to be that way but it was something that I think when you work so hard when you're so close to something two years in a row and you understand what it takes to get there you'll do anything to get to that goal it's funny people talk about the reaction to the Alabama you know see Alabama like when those cameras turned off the boys were like that's who we wanted that's what we wanted to do and we wanted you know to be the best they always said you got to beat the best pen State takes on West Virginia it's big new Saturday only on Fox [Music] Rose Bowl epic Rose bow game I mean my goodness what a what a great game and then what I would categorize as the prototypical Michigan victory over Washington the cfp run you know what was that like internally uh something I've never been a part of it's funny people talk about the reaction to the Alabama you know seeing Alabama like when those cameras turned off the boys were like that's who we wanted that's what we wanted to do and we wanted you know to be the best they always said you got to beat the best and they've been the King of the Hill for a long time I know Georgia has won two national championship but Nick had six of them so you knew if you wanted to get to the top you had to face a team like that to get there and they were excited for that game and ready and the preparation that they had throughout that month was super special I mean I'd be in the office at 10:00 and I'd see guys in the film room watching film doing you know doing this watching cut UPS texting me at night hey coach what about this look what about this look what what are we doing here and it's was something that I've never seen all all that's well and good especially you know you can talk about prep you can talk about mindset you can talk about culture but when it has to manifest and you're down and there's under four minutes to go and it's 20 to 13 and you've got a drive on on the Bama defense just to tie the the game up yeah you know um walk me through the last Drive yeah two instances will always be held forever in my mind uh really three so before that drive I've never really nervous to call a drive never really like anxious that drive I was looking around I looked at the clock I looked at the time I said this is like the most Drive in like Michigan football history that's how I thought of it and uh I looked up to the sky and asked my grandpa like hey Pops I need some help here help me out uh love you and uh I never forget I was walking and all the linemen strapping their helmets on and JJ comes up to me said hey Pops we got you and I was like oh yeah we about to go score on this trft and we' been held like we've been moving the ball a little bit but not as much and that drive we went down and scored in the fourth and two call yeah so we ran it uh had a play action on Third and two to with orgy in the game it didn't work out they had it covered and it was fourth and two and I knew coach was going to say go for it and uh fourth and two I already knew what call we were going to do I knew the pick R I knew what we were going to do knew how it was and it had set up because we' shifted in motion and made it look the same the whole game it Rand Duo and then they were calling out run yeah and then Blake pops open and you know we go down the field and then Roman gets the Block in the back so guys are like oh no we coming back I'm like no no I think we still got the first down and uh we got the first down called The Run option with JJ we hadn't ran that all game and it was set up I was like okay this is the time then came back to a play action that we actually called early in the game but the route spacing wasn't right we fixed it on the sideline and then Roman popped open and made an incredible catch made the guy Miss as he landed and then the play that I called second I was actually going to call first but I got a little closer and then all of a sudden called the play action to Roman slipped out and it was a touchdown so uh that drive will hold true forever in my mind of how it went down in the time and and uh what happened the result so now we we move forward and and you are now the head coach and and you enter this realm you know for us that analyze the sport from afar we've seen you know your Rivals Ryan day you know promoted from within we saw Lincoln R Riley promoted from within we saw with David Shaw when Jim Harbaugh left Stamford promoted from within and yet none of those guys had to do what you're about to do which is take over for the reigning national champions last time that happened was Frank solich when Tom Osborne stepped away in the late 90s from Nebraska so do you even like let that weigh on you does that does that register or or are you more just focused on the business at hand yeah it doesn't weigh on me that I mean I think about it but I'm not going to let it put pressure on me uh I just want to get better every day that's it just work on this process we talk about that still with the players and not going to let it you know drain me or try to think about that too much just going to work on trying try to get better at what I can do every single day to make this team the best they just say what do you need us to do to go win this game yeah that's I'm just like this team is unbelievable the NFL is back on bu with a huge double header first it's Vikings Giants then Tom Brady makes his debut in the Boo as the Cowboys take on the BRS it all kicks off September 8 on Fox what's most important to you about your identity because I'll be I'll be real honest nobody succeeds trying to emulate someone that they were mentored by it doesn't happen you look at all the coaches that left bill bellich or Nick Sabin the only guys that can be successful are the ones that just do it their way I think that's what has made Ryan day and Lincoln Riley so successful AB for what they've done what's a key for you in just being Coach Moore yeah I'm not going to change I'm going to be who I've always been um I've always been a process driven person but you know to my core we're going to be physical we're going to be tough uh we're going to try to outlast people um we're going to be multiple in every phase and but we're going to be fundamentally sound and balance what we do you've had some great mentors mhm played for Bob Stoops yeah um obviously coached here with Jim Harbaugh and then there's another guy that you and I share as a mentor men who taught me the game yeah it's a guy named sea Watson he was the offensive coordinator at Colorado yep taught the game incredibly well and and detail oriented he never just coached what was going on or even how to do it but always why Always why right even with all of his I call him wats isms you know and and he taught you were with him as a young coach at Louisville when he was the offensive coordinator for the Teddy Bridgewater years at at Louisville can you tell me of those three guys maybe Bob stoop Shan Watson and Jim Harbaugh what what you're pulling from each of those guys yeah uh from Bob the initial love of the game is really where I started to get it even more and really the initial love for loving your players loving your program and how to run an organization it was just unmatched at the time for me seeing him seeing him in his in his element I would say yeah and what he did on a daily basis to make our team great the motivational factors motivational speeches and things he would say to us on a daily basis were super special and stuff I'd never forget so and then i' still talk to him you know I still talk to all these guys but for sure you know coach STS he's a legend and uh somebody I'll you know never forget the things I learned from him from from uh I'll go to coach since it was most recent man just always well never be afraid to be different you know never be afraid to venture out and try things that you've never done just because they haven't been done or you haven't done it doesn't mean it's the right way just because you did it that way doesn't mean you should do it that way again like you know always challenge yourself and challenge other people and I think I really grew with coach in challenging myself but also challenging others in a positive way to make sure that we're doing it the best way for our players so so that's probably what I've learned the most from coach and then just the style and organization how to run an organization from him um cuz he did it unlike anybody's ever seen and then from watch like the game of football like the game inside and out on the grid iron of How It's taught how to be a great teacher cuz he was an amazing teacher as you know like yes dude was he's he's he still is but I mean he was so impactful as a teacher like soon as he'd start talking your eyes would just light in on everything he say the tree of those coaches have taught me so much and I continue to strive to pull from those guys from our coaches from different people and when you stop learning you die in this business so you got to keep learning last year you had to be thrown into the fire you're the head coach against Penn State you're the head coach against Ohio State um is there anything that that you learned that you definitely want to do differently based on those two games you know probably don't want to run the ball 32 times in a row you don't cuz I was going to say game but Chiron okay you bring it up you bring it up if it works keep doing it I loved that adjustment yeah in the booth and I see it just like you do we haven't talked about this by the way so you're getting this raw chop Robinson you're you guys are beat up a little bit on the offensive line so you're swinging out Carson has to move out to right tackle you know you're doing some things chop Robins on the first two third Downs of the game Beast you guys just whiff and he hits JJ now JJ got the ball out so they weren't sacked yeah I I turned to the guys in the booth namely Steve who's who's my guy I turned to him in the booth and I was like I was like they can't block Chop Chop Robinson and immediately you went to seven offensive linemen on the field got the extra gaps just slowed the game down you like okay let let's settle in and then you end up running the ball 32 straight times I was like that is brilliant that is brilliant and you're telling me you don't want to do that well I'm not saying like I won't do it again because if it has to be done we will but uh it wasn't your plan wasn't the plan it wasn't the plan wasn't the plan at all it just just kind of happened that way and uh at the end of the day we're going to do whatever it takes to win so if we got to do that we will am I looking at the same same thing you were it was like oh that that guy's going to be problem he was coming off the ball fast and it was loud and uh you had to change up to snack count move the pock which we move the pocket a little bit too and did some of that but he was coming off the ball fast salute to you chop and he'll have a great career in the NFL and but you watched him every game it was like that yep especially at home at their place he did a great job of timing up the snap count so had to make an adjustment and uh but I also felt like we're getting that movement in the Run game pretty well and when you got two backs like we do um super cool to do that but the coolest part about that is you know JJ Roman Cornelius Colston AJ they just say what do you need us to do to go win this game yeah that's I'm just like this team is unbelievable like usually be like oh I want my catches and like my guys we're we're let's just go win this game they're like we got you wow did uh Chiron Moore thank you for your time man best of luck next year you buddy Nebraska head coach Matt R so I expect us to have a really good team this year I expect us to make some make some runs I expect us to be a team that people don't want to play most influential people in the sport talking about the sport globally on this episode of bigon conversations I talk with mat rule the head coach of the Nebraska Corn Huskers Matt rule head coach of the Nebraska Corn Huskers thanks for joining us man appreciate it uh appreciate your time um started off every uh conversation just like this what's the best part about being the head coach at Nebraska um I'd say uh living in Nebraska you know that might that might shock people across the country but it's other it's probably I've lived a lot of plac is probably the best group of people I've ever been around um like a hardworking a population of people that you know love Nebraska football so if you're a football guy I can't think of a better place to live in the country than Nebraska I I mean I'll attest to that I know I'm I I played at Colorado but having to play Nebraska and Lincoln twice during my career I tell you what always shocked me so much is and this is as unique and weird a feeling as you'll get is that we you had to warm up in front of 90,000 because they're in their seats like an hour before the game that's right I'm warming up and I'm like this this is wild it it created a really uneasy feeling having all those people watch the warm-ups yeah I think that's I think that's not just a love of football I think that's a love of all the players I'm I've heard a couple people say like hey we come to support everybody from the first warm-up to to the last snap of the game no matter what the score is we're going to we're going to watch the Huskers and so my my first time my first home it was my first home game and sitting out there and Isaac gford is our senior free safety and I'm sitting there warmups like Blown Away by the amount of people there and he looked at me he goes coach this never gets old man and he's you know he's a senior he's a he's a Husker and he was right well it's an exciting time around your program uh right now and um I personally think that you guys are going to be a really good football team this next fall but it's even more than that it's it's you getting there it's your second year uh the optimism around the program in particular a program that is you know maybe this is too strong a word but that fan base desperate for the return of of the Huskers you know what do you feel about that excitement and that momentum well I think I think the word desperate is is not a bad word I think that's exactly the right word Joel because um people people love their team yeah it's it's like you know being in Texas and being in a one school town you know like I mean they they love that team and and I think the thing is for me coming from the Northeast you know coming from where all the places I've been and um you get there and and they sold the crowd out for so long that maybe you take that for granted and uh immediately I didn't want to take that for granted immediately I want to return a product that people wanted to come see and and were proud to see and you start talking to people all across the state and they're telling you these memories of coming to games with you know their grandfather and their uncle and you know these people were you working jobs or farming or ranching and the only time they would make sure they could get off was to come watch those games and you're like man there's an unbelievable uh importance to not just winning but to doing things in a way that represents people in Nebraska what excites you about not only this season but what you're building and and the the momentum that you're creating yeah when when I looked in Nebraska I saw the facilities I saw the fan base I saw the financial situation I saw a school that had no debt you know one of the only only only big 10 schools with no debt uh in the age we're getting ready to move into I thought well this place is uniquely positioned I saw a history of Excellence my question was can we recruit there sure you know like you know I had people telling me like hey you know it's in the middle of the country it's going be hard to recruit hey why don't you wait for a job in Texas or Florida or something like that and I kind of fell in love with the place but that was always my question so getting there and seeing a how how cool of a town Lincoln is how big of a City Omaha is how much the football's pretty good in that area there's a lot of division one players coming out of that area um then saying that there's still a national pool man I still can wear this I can still wear this to a airport in Florida I'm going to get a go Big Red I promise you so we have we still have some pull now we have to play well but we can we can get players to come to Nebraska we get players who want to come play in those facilities um and uh so that's why I'm excited because we have a pretty good team you know I how that you know I'm a coach I'm not going to say too much but uh I think we have a pretty good team I have like a kind of a quiet confidence when I walk around about where we're headed is it this year I think it is is it the next year definitely and so I'm really excited about that I always love when Phil Steels magazine comes out every year and one of the things he uses to predict success the next year is usually close losses lead to close wins and turnovers usually lead to turn arounds like it would if we let me tell this right now if we are if we are minus 17 again this year I'm I'm GNA be I'm going to be playing golf okay the stage is set there are Clues everywhere what the heck is that you guys are Miss the biggest clue hey college football fans Joel clatt here over on my podcast the Joel Clash show we are bringing you the best college football analysis every week I discuss the best teams the best players and the biggest story lines in college football with new episodes every week the Joel class show is your complete college football Roundup any questions then send them into the Joel class show mailbag follow the Joel class show on the Fox Sports app Apple Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts you're a builder you know I've said this several times on this show uh about you specifically um and it's why candidly so many programs have been enamored with the thought of trying to get you in their program as their head coach and Nebraska was able to do that you did it at Temple you did it at Baylor those are places that were not easy to do that in particular I know Baylor had won before you were there but I think people forget what had happened there and what you actually took over um after um uh coach Gro was in there and that was a difficult job yeah so my confidence level is in is in you as a builder um is that what you see yeah F first of all thank you um yeah I think so and I think I think it's because our staff uh we we we are not afraid of failure uh we are not afraid to go 2 and 10 our first year one and 11 our first Year everyone talks about building a culture and you don't even know what that is sometimes well to me it's it's getting the best people possible and setting high standards for how you do things and if that means that hey I'm going to play the the guys who will do things right early on and we might not lose or because you know we're trying to recruit freshmen not take a quick fix um we're willing to go through that you know our bad year here was 5- seven instead of 2 and 10 which is much better than 2 and 10 thank thank goodness BR but I think once the players realize like hey these guys are for real man like they're G to they would coach rule would rather lose than win by doing things the wrong way and so we we're going to buy into doing things the wrong way and the staff like I've never fired a coach after first year like you know we go 1 and 11 2 and 10 everyone thinks you're going to fire everybody I'm like what are we talking about we did our best work this year and so in those triage years we are setting the program up quietly to have long-term success you know Baylor had Baylor won a championship after we were gone with those same kids because they had been trained the right way so I think that's that building the first thing you do when you want to build a building is you do what you got to dig and you got to go down you have to actually go the wrong way to go the right way and not everyone's willing to do that especially nowadays with nil portal and all that and and yet I mean you say you know five and seven and yeah maybe from the outside that doesn't look like success okay fine fine however if you actually dig into your season and you watch it and you see what you were to begin the season and what you were to end the season the games that you were in and more specifically the ways that you lost those seven games you got your turnover issue was wild wild 15 turnovers in in I think five of your losses which you know that goes the other way and it's not even just a five- seven season in a triage year something much better and you're going to a bowl game that's why I have confidence moving forward I'm like boy it's really small these margins between what they did last year at five and seven and and potentially a really good solid year yeah you know I I always love when Phil Steels magazine comes out every year and one of the things he uses to predict success the next year is usually close losses lead close wins and turnovers usually really to turn arounds like it would if we let me say this right now if we are if we are minus 17 again this year I'm I'm I'm gonna be I'm gonna be playing golf okay they won't have me back as the coach and they shouldn't like be because it was it was a phenomenon that just kind of built on itself and so obviously I didn't do a good enough job but we won't be that this year I think you can make an argument that experience is is really the currency that now college football is moving towards you know yeah we can talk about nil all we want we can talk about transfer portal and all those things are important and I'm not going to suggest that they're not but when you see some of the teams that are now all of the sudden taking leaps and making Headway into the top echelons of the sport Washington veteran team Michigan National Championship that was a veteran football team now a sudden here you guys are going to have five returning offensive linemen most of your defense back and I think you've recruited really well the skill position players and gotten some some guys out of the portal at those those positions as as well when when you look at the experience level and factor of your team is is that something that that tips you in the direction of knowing like this this could be a year that's that's very good absolutely I think um I think there's experience and as we move forward in the college football playoff era depth you're going to be playing 17 games yes yes so you know while an NFL team has a 53 man roster there's unlimited transactions so it might take 90 guys to have 53 men for us you know uh what's unique about us is I think we have like 19 returning starters we also have 82 freshman and sophomores so we are I remember talking about that before the Colorado game and I was like wa wait is that is that number real it's wild so we have these like really and it was it was a bless for us three of our best players Ben Scott Bryce benhardt Isaac gford all decided to come back forgo the NFL Ty Robinson for the four guys that had draftable grades decided to not go to the NFL I told some of them I'm like you should go to the NFL bro what are you doing and they're like no I want to come back and so I have this Elite experience that's really talented and also a bunch of really good young players that are watching them so that's why I think we can win this year because of that experience and then those young players are going to be experienced the following years and that kind of is how to me you build something that eventually can hopefully make that jump to be in the college football playoff conversation a lot of the excitement is going to center around signing a five-star quarterback uh you know so here comes Rola he's a number one recruit in the country in a lot of Publications I think he's going to be a guy that all of college football knows pen State takes on West Virginia it's big noon Saturday only on [Music] Fox the nature of the sport is also changing in the structure of the sport I don't think it's it's not lost on me that the transfer portal in N nil have opened up access to the top echelons of the sport you look at the four teams that have just competed for a national championship in the last couple of years three of them were TCU Washington and Michigan we would have never said that six years ago it was a Alabama Clemson that's what it was going to be do you think that that college football is in a place where anybody is going to have not only access but can project themselves out to go up and potentially compete for a national championship yeah I'd say no doubt I think um you even look at like uh the top top schools and where they're recruiting from and how it's changed over the last 10 years where it was very Regional before now now you're recruiting nationally because you want to build a relationship maybe you get them then maybe when they go in the portal in two years you get them then and so you you do have access to a lot more players you do have players and I think as we move into the next era whether it's Revenue sharing or how it works people are not going to have to just decide how much they want Joel clat they're going to have to decide how much they want to pay Joel clatt yeah and so you know a young man's going to look at an opportunity why can go there for you know 20,000 I can go there for 70,000 and so you know really roster makeup and the decisions you make with if it's a similar pot it's going to be really really interesting and it does open up access and it does bring about parody you know the NFL is the the most parody driven League that there is yeah I mean your your roster a lot of the excitement is going to center around signing a five-star quarterback uh you know so here comes rayola and tell us about what it's been like to not only land him which was you know he was a number one recruit in the country in a lot of Publications uh but also what it's meant to your your team when you watch him practice and and uh what it could be for you for your offense yeah I mean Dylan's uh Talent is is only matched by his by who he is as a person you know I mean his family you know obviously you know his father was a great Husker um father played you know 14 years in the NFL as an offensive lineman the most unselfish position that there is and as a center you know um a great great mom great sister great younger brothers his uncles's our offensive line coach and so the great thing for us was in recruiting you know that he came because he knew what the the program was really like on the inside yeah that sends a message to everybody else in recruiting that hey this is a good place like I actually really I was going to go somewhere else I know what's happening here you should trust it you should come yeah I think the second part of it is so so now you're now you're attracting players from all across the country that want to come play with him but at the end of the day to your point it comes down to the football and um you know he has a unique feel for the game he's really really smart you know you always hear Tom Brady and those guys talk about when your best players work the hardest you have a great team well well Dylan Dylan's one of those guys who tries to work the hardest and so um you know people talk a lot about turnovers last year which we should i' go back and say if we can throw the ball better you know if we can complete third and five if we can you know if we're not throwing you know interceptions if we can be more aggressive because we trust our decision making and so that's been one of the challenges for Dylan that's been one of the CH challenges for Danny and for hin um you know everyone wants to know who the starting quarterback's going to be in Nebraska I'm always like hey it's going to take probably two maybe three in this 17 game Seasons that that we want to have um and so he he certainly has helped us raise the level of play and I think he's going to be a guy that all of college football knows I just expect us to make a massive jump from year one to year two and I expect our best jump to be from year two to year three so I expect us to have a really good team this year I expect us to make some make some runs I expect us to be a team that people don't want to play the NFL is back onx with a huge double head first it's Vikings Giants then Tom Brady makes in the as the take on the it all kicks off September 8th onx do you have benchmarks in your head having done this before at Temple and Baylor and knowing what it it was like and and to be fair though the structure of the game is so much different now than it was you know because you didn't build Baylor and Temple with nil and transfer portal you know as part of college football but even with that just as a coach you've got a feel for for how it's going do you have benchmarks yeah I just expect us to make a a massive jump from year one to year two and I expect our best jump to be from year two to year three you know I think like I think you go from playing losing football to winning football winning football to championship football um the question I've said the whole time since I've been at Nebraska tar guys is you know make year two year one make year three year two like let's not go through the two and 10 let's not let's not fight and why are we doing this just buy into it and do it and in many ways last year was like a second year for me um so I expect us to have a really good team this year I expect us to make some make some runs I expect us to be a team that people don't want to play and so um now as we look at you know college football now you know I always want us to to win a bow game I want us to be in the conference title race and I want us to fight to go play in the college football playoff and then win it yeah and so where we are there why I I mean I certainly expect us to be a bull eligible team can we be a team that challenges to go play in the college fo playoff um I don't know I I I think I think if we weren't minus 17 if all a sudden that was plus seven we we might we might make some noise and so you know that's really my challenge to the guys is like hey let's let's let's let's fix the over issue let's get really good on offense to match our defense and then then we'll go play we'll see what happens that Colorado Nebraska game uh you mentioned it from from a year ago now it's going to be in your place and with with everything surrounding their program because man there's there's a lot of energy obviously at Colorado and a lot of eyeballs on Colorado you know and that's obviously what coach Prime has has brought there but now all the sudden that that game is a monster you know almost like it used to be when Colorado Nebraska would play after Thanksgiving and it would be for for the division or for the big eight you know right to go to the Orange Bowl that's how I grew up with it you know I mean it was it was a classic and for the first time in a long time it feels like both programs have high expectations and that game early in the season is a monster game yeah it's um you know I think the one thing that we always have to remember when we when we talk about Colorado is how great shador is you know he's he is um one of the best football players I've ever coached against and you know we blitzed him I think we sacked him like 10 times and we hit him a ton and he stood in there and so you know I know everyone sees you know shador on commercials they see him you know they see the Swagger that he plays with but he's an unbelievable competitor and he's tough and so to me you take you know shador you take you know Travis Hunter you take all the players that they have you take obviously coach Sanders you know they're going to come into our place they're a really good football team with with Dynamic players that you have to compete with how good is it for like that part of the country to have this game and have have it be National TV at night like how good is it for the game of football like I don't I just don't want football to become like you know this area of the country this area of the country I want it to be from coast to coast you know I want all 50 states and what what what what Dion has done in my opinion is he's made football relevant to maybe people that weren't watching it and so it's our chance to to to kind of come into that game and people are going to tune in to see them yeah and they'll have a chance to watch us too and if we play well maybe people will have that same energy about us nationally that they have about them um last thing I want to kind of chat about is is I think that experiences in life are are how we grow uh in a lot of ways I've I've grown the most in my life both both personally and professionally and even going back when I was a player through failure um what did you learn at Carolina and and in your experience in the NFL you know I'd say I learned a lot I'd say learned a lot of things I would not be able to be the head coach of Nebraska had I gone through that um every decision you make is magnified in Nebraska 10 times over and if you're not really confident in who you are I could see it really affecting you I could see you you know compromising you know I have such a different relationship with our players now like when I'm able to tell them because you know this generation is so concerned with how people see them and you for me you know I've been I've been National coach of the year you know I've been I've been you know oh hopefully we can have him be our coach I've been a meme and laughed at on Sports Center you know and as rer Kipling says you know if you if you can meet with Triumph a disaster and treat those two imposters the same and so I've been able to teach my own kids that um you know when I go out there now and the crowd's cheering I've also had 50,000 70,000 people in Panther Stadium U screaming to fire me and what I learned through all of that is man I I just want to make it about my players I just it's not about me and coaches say that but they mean it is about them it's really not about me like I came back to college football because I knew young people needed coaches that cared about them coaches that don't want to throw them away coaches that don't want to give up on them coaches that want to make a environment where they can be safe to have failures but grow I'm so much closer with my players now and that's why I believe in thebrass we'll win and people coach are you going to go here you going to go there and no I love Nebraska and I love the people there and I love my players because I love these guys that time in Carolina maybe re reborn that to me and that's why I'm so happy to be back in college football I learned through all that I appreciate sit and not hit a golf shot when we're staring at a golf course what do you think it's not about me do we I got a 50 and a 56 so we're good to go I came back to college football cuz I knew young people he just the whole coaches that cared about them coaches that don't want to you're on the green I'm there on the almost made it throw them away don't want to give up on them coaches that we win as the cowbo take season getting ready to run against Minnesota matter of minutes right here kick off late until 9:00 because of weather we're here back in studio mike Hill of course coach Chris Peterson and Emanuel AO getting you ready for the big important match up first game of the season hey nerves don't know what to expect the first game of the season weather delays how important is it winning the first game of the season it's everything was it all a lie the first game of the season will convince the player if it was all a lie or not what I mean by that is summer workouts the coach to my left Chris Peterson is saying fellas we can win it all this year we can go to the playoffs and we can win it all this year but if you get smacked in the first game all of a sudden in the locker room when you're driving back home in your apartment in your dorm you're saying to yourself man coach was lying to me that whole time so the first game really dictates the trajectory of the season for the young players a coach will always maintain their Poise and their confidence but for the players was it all a lie the 6 a.m. workouts the grueling practices was it all a lie that's what the first game can tell a player you want to get off to that good start okay who's going to get off to a good start tonight coach this is a tough one this is a nice matchup I mean I love Coach Brown the best in the business he's so good I think Omarian Hampton's the best player on the field yeah what I don't like about North Carolina is four out of five new linemen playing two quarterbacks it sounds like yeah that makes me nervous replacing a guy like Drake May that so yeah so I kind of go back I I had a conversation with PJ Fleck about a week ago and I couldn't believe how he was talking about his quarterback ma Max brosmer transfer from New Hampshire FCS All-American I mean you think this guy's the next coming of Joe Montana so I got to tell you about I'm rowing the boat tonight okay sorry I know that hurt you but I'm rowing the boat hey you know what North Carolina won the match up last year off to a six andal star from North Carina both of these teams finish mediocre down the stretch we'll see what happens in Game number one tonight about to get ready on Fox Jason Benet and Brock hu with the call Mike thank you very much welcome to Fox college football sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all state it took an hour extra for the skies to clear but North Carolina and Minnesota are together and with an expanded college football playoffs more teams can reasonably say they could get to the cfp reasonably the word of college football season for fans everywhere let's be unreasonable together for college football Jason benetti Brock hu Allison Williams downstairs in a moment let's start with football being back you have that smile on your face what's inside well I'm hearing the trumpets being played at just the right time to get this thing going because there's been all this talk and all this chatter and it's great oh we're wonderful both these coaches really like their teams this season but there's a beauty to this game in the opening weekend the truth gets told when the pads get put on you're not hitting your own team you're not hitting familiar guys and often there's a little humility and a little failure and the team that handles that best usually comes out better on the other side PJ Fleck for the home team for Minnesota loves his team right now he loves his quarterback really loves the quarterback yes he does most competitive group he's had in his years since 2017 the most competition throughout his roster and he's got a quarterback that reminds some people around here a Tanner Morgan a veteran guy and Max brosmer six-year quarterback transfer from New Hampshire and All American and man were they raving about him raving about his arm raving about his leadership raving about his is processing they can't put too much on him and Jason if he's half as good as everybody in that building feels like he is then well reasonably they may have a conversation late in the year about getting to that 12 team playoff it's college football season nobody in that sea of gold is going to be reasonable and that's the fun of it here come the goers [Applause] somebody's got to be the road team in week one it's North Carolina returning a game from last year Brown knows one thing he has an All-American running back can Carolina get over that hump to 91 wins he does and with that running back he knows he's been around this game for almost 50 years his wisdom is second to none he knows two things Jason they've worn down at the end of the year the last two seasons have got to play more people throughout the entire roster and then they've got to play complimentary football not done that they've been a terrific offense since his return but they've got to play complimentary to their defense and there's no better weapon than I don't know A500 yd back a guy with 15 touchdowns and the most remarkable thing about the All-American Hampton a year ago five touchdowns of 50 plus this guy doesn't just hit singles and doubles he hits Grand salamis here we go college football season on a Thursday night we'll take it a break with our game count downtown sponsored by Progressive the North Carolina Tar Heels the Minnesota Golden Gophers kickoff is coming up next from the Twin Cities hey Flo cool leg warmers thanks they're just for the best ride to work they're not part of the official uniform no Tunes today no my apartment was robbed last night took my cable Ready TV VCR portable cassette player yep all the latest Tex if only Progressive had renters insurance like their home insurance then we could bundle our cars and get the same 24/7 protection conference welcome back to Fox college football sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all state Mother Nature even got the memo about the gold out here in Minneapolis as we check in on the status of Carolina's quarterback with Allison Williams yeah Jason so many questions will be answered tonight but for UNC the biggest mystery has been who will start at quarterback the Tar Heels are electing to go with their graduate transfer Max Johnson citing his experience he started 22 games in the SEC his consistency and his ability to take care of the football plus they say he's a better Runner Than People realize head coach ma Brown said we just want him to settle in do too much and play with confidence but if the game calls for it or they feel like he needs a spell they are comfortable with Conor Harold in there at quarterback but both of these offenses rely heavily on the Run game and for Minnesota they are without their leading rusher from a season ago Darius Taylor cannot play he has a leg injury so expect to see a lot of Oklahoma transfer Marcus major in the back field Allison thank you so much soak it in college football's back Liam Boyd on the approach for the tars here we go North Carolina Minnesota ACC Big 10 and Minnesota we'll have the football first you mentioned Max brosmer this is the first time that Max brosmer is going to have his last name on the back of his jersey he transferred from New Hampshire by way of Centennial High School in Georgia he comes from the FCS level he thought he had to bring his own pth to the hotel last night he's ready to go and Lead this team with all that pedigree in that building the body language looks calm you can see the sweat on the back of the ne always clamored for a heart rate monitor on these guys they say he's ice water in his veins calm cool and collected and here goes his Minnesota [Applause] Career final college football season begins with a throw he looked off maor and now rolls to his right on the opening pass of his go for tenure it's incomplete and second down coming up for Minnesota on the offensive line big dude on the left side arante ursery an NFL prospect tell me which one isn't big 66 66 66 67 I mean they are a gigantic up front even the center the youngster the only youngster of that group with a lot of experience Greg Johnson 66 Daniel Jackson you will see him everywhere second Team all conference a year ago he'll be in the back field he'll be in the slot their biggest weapon he's in the back field right now with Jordan Nan as well and they will give it to his first touch gets into the corner and it's third down and long coming up for a North Carolina defense that was 97th in yardage defense last year there are the three up front and then when you get to the linebacker area a 100 yd t uh 100 tackle guy in Power Eckles and then Rucker a great pass rusher yeah Ruckers is an absolute stud feel like they've got an advantage with him on right tackle Martz Lewis starting to tackle they've shipped him out from gar in a whole bunch of experience six year six year six year fifth year on the back in trying to limit the big plays that were far too common a season ago at the line and will if there's a flag there isn't one play clock winding down brosmer to throw the pocket holds up and he is high and incomplete Jam gears the intended target nobody on that offensive line moved and so no penalty was thrown correct the youngster that's GRE joh sliding over from guard to Center if he feels that and in time he will in that neutral zone just snap it and you're going to get a free five instead you don't and right there you could see rosmer his feet were moving a little bit that's why that ball sailed on him had an open receiver to move the sticks but a good three and out by Carolina Elijah H back to return that's a 44 second possession for the Golden Gophers there is a marker down and Crawford's punt to H as a line drive it's returnable and he's across the 40 yd line will check the penalty our big 10 referee is Cole kiple illegal formation kicking team that 5y penalty will be added to the end of the run first and 10 North Carolina so the Tar Heels will get an extra five Max Johnson he spent two years in Baton Rouge at LSU 14 starts couple of Seasons there he moved on in the secc Texas A&M which had a coaching change he was 4 and four as a starter there typically protects the football and he's now got the job here in Chapel Hill his father Brad played here in the Twin Cities and he's just short of Midfield on his first [Applause] touch got a great running back behind him inviting contct om Mar Hampton Max Johnson under Center your thoughts very competitive battle to the point that Ma did not show his hands in back both guys were running with the ones m brown really felt like Max brings some confidence been a lot of places some dysfunctional places the last two stops and talking to the coaching staff really are hoping for the Bon Knicks experience right right place more production Mar Hampton said he wanted to be more of aapon out of the back field he breaks a tackle and sets up a third down and medium for North Carolina so Hampton the allam behind this offensive line Willie lampin 51 at right look at him stuck next to his 6' s teammate Trey Green could do it a little bit differ a guard get underneath people a people the only guy on that o line by the way that's ever started a Collegian game McCollum was a nightmare for Minnesota a year ago 15 catches in this matchup but a lot of inexperience up front Minnesota trying to get better on third down under a new defensive coordinator Johnson with some backside heat got it to the sideline and this is caught for the first down JJ Jones who had 46 catches last year that's pretty and look at Carolina quickly getting to the ball every play is reviewed that is that Jordan right there looks almost like a Jordan poster right there by JJ J The Jump Man draging the toe and let's see we have a whistle PJ wants a timeout wants to make sure that replay Booth had enough time that's tremendous body control by the veteran receiver Jones leading receiver in yards and re recep a season to go for Drake May big third down conversion ja Brown at age 73 already salty already into the season he was a basketball player in high school Jones first other America is ready and so are we democracy 24 your freedom your vote let's take a look at stay in the game sponsored by Hampton by Hilton Hilton for the stage we talked about this in the open playing complimentary football helping your defense out Max teams have really looked a lot like their basketball team they played in transition that Carolina blue up and down the court up and down the field he knows to win games late though you can't wear down a defense and play more people complimentary ball and Minnesota wants to throw it to run it PJ came out threw it twice on that opening drive and fortunately not the execution good good J blowing the bubbles better than the passing game on that opening Series action to Omar Hampton now it's Johnson rolling and throwing and he'll just spray it out of bounds Joiner there sack leader last year provided the heat I think they were trying to set up a screen whenever you see all those linemen like that go to that one side of the field trying to roll away throw a throwback screen nothing there and that's what happens with experience five years of playing you don't force it if it's not there especially on first down Live to play another day throw it away especially with Mari in the back field you know that he can break tackles as he bus his way across the 35 one of the best tackle Breakers at all of college football last year sets up a third and short and here is the Minnesota defense including join of the pass rusher been around a long time a lot of beef up front 65 280 amongst that group as again Carolina hurries to that line they will beat hton down to set up Athan brys amongs we've seen this already here on a couple plays by new coordinator Cory Heather and that has been agression secondary players at the line of scrimmage moving pieces and here you go first big decision of the game as you see Cory getting After High Juice high energy wants his guys to play aggressively got to get to the down first of the seon Johnson short Seline ball and that's incomplete Jones couldn't toe Minnesota gets [Applause] a golden goers known for their Def the past bunch of years get a stop to hand it back to PJ Flex offense some and Sally were very happy with a 313 final score for North Carolina three for 12 on third Downs didn't help Drake May was the quarterback for North Carolina this is the first time they've been without Sam how or Drake May in an opener since 2018 so Carolina's going to figure that out here's Minnesota with the ball for the second time without Darius Taylor their leading rusher from last year Marcus major the Oklahoma transfer who has been so impressive baring his way for a big on first down 5 years at Oklahoma the playing time dwindled PJ Fleck was enamored with him he was you never fully know right they're like free agents at the NFL level but from day one he's wowed him once the pads came on it was the next step and you know when you compare yourself to that guy that wore 24 for PJ Mohamad Abraham who put up a lot of yards that's a comparison that's been made because he's No Nonsense blue collar and he'll run right through yet there are 64% runs since 2017 under PJ you said it run to pass it and there's power echles backto back years 100 tackles plus and man did he Birds through the door well just look at the guys getting downhill I think for both of these defenses tonight that's going to be such a key look at the line of scrimmage where the ball is snapped and then quickly right there two of those guys in Carolina blue on the other side right that good oldfashioned game a tug of- War too much catching a year ago too much reacting not enough dictating that gu built to dictate sets up a third down here for Minnesota at the top of your screen they leading receiver out the gets by Elijah H what a play this is a little bit of the illusion of complexity that m brown wants from his defense a whole bunch of pieces moving around but in the end it's cover two it's a little bit of a fourman rush from different spots but huy knows I have got that zone I am the boundary corner I'm the Cloud Corner he has his eyes in the back field and that's textbook from the six-year veteran cornerback and now he goes back to return the punt from Crawford F drive just a CL line that keeps on rolling all the way to PA those AES so crazy with that football what was that that was like a two Stinger straight from Australia from the 30y old it was raining sideways earlier it's raining football sideways now for Crawford a 56 yd punt when migraine strikes you're faced curiosity that straps on the fs and goggles and gets to work so swim proud Minnesota the miniot swims for you the NFL is back on box with a huge double header first Steelers Falcons then Tom Brady makes his debut in the Boo as the Cowboys take on the BRS it all kicks off September 8 on Fox when Max Johnson's father Brad played his two stints with the Vikings they had a roof so he didn't have to sit in the rain he was twice a Minnesota Viking in the 90s and then 05 and 06 and there are the two brothers Johnson who play on this team Max his brother Jake a tight end for Carolina and what a homecoming a home really for this family a couple of times in the NFL life so cool in such a journey his has I know he's hoping the third time a [Applause] charm Brad was listening to Something in the crowd he had the headphones on coach onlooker well that's also like on the airplane when you put the headphones on and not hear anything anybody else is saying around [Applause] you here's his Max on the and he is and it's thirding you See's to stop that foot yeah they felt like Max said he's a better athlete get he's B guy 65 225 but he can run a little bit you're absolutely right that inside wheel it spits out third yourt had to get close for the play it's loud back there that's near CED Zan bran had it right in his it's that's now all three third Downs you've seen the same concept and that is attacking the boundary right oneon-one out there it's going to end up first time was a beautiful catch and you see his receiver JJ Jones fall down nearly catastrophic giving the ball away as JJ ends up on his backside and Brian yes gets the knock away but could have had an enormous inter to flip the field last time Minnesota played an ACC team in the Twin Cities they got five interceptions against wake for in the late 60s they nearly blocked that punt mcin does get it away anding has to wave it off not exactly a technical video with 54 yd and 56 yd punts gets the job done Max brosmer back out Allison Williams yeah and this Minnesota offense trying to something going after the opening three and outs and brosmer told us I'm not naive I know the first few possessions are going to feel fast but I believe in my ability to adapt and I have complete confidence in the guys around me and that was a word we heard a lot yesterday from coaches talking about brosmer the confidence he plays with how he doesn't get rattled and I'll tell you just watching him a little bit here on the sidelines he is he is so calm very businesslike demeanor i' add a couple things to that as well Allison and great report and that's number one making adjustments he said it that's what he does best process is the game and number two you're also trying to figure out these key coordinators I think both offensive staffs are really playing right now a game of discovery of exactly what are they going to get from these two new DCS on both sides it's a first down for maor and he is slung down by power ech what a greting in the ho what what you're seeing once again I think about three of the four runs is Carolina reestablishing that line scage for Jeff Collins the minister of Mayhem wants chaos he wants psychos out there that are cutting it loose and not thinking too much thinking a season ago too many big plays that followed it there's some tremendous athletes Big Time recruits four stars five stars let him go play and cut it Loose he literally picks a psycho in every practice second down rosmer gets his running back in his lap and down he goes Javari took him down yeah one guy took him down but it was this right here it was this pressure off the edge and a hello Jordan nuben how does my face mask taste as I drive you back that is stick Lane right there from the secondary driving that back and then there is nowhere to go single digits all over him in ritzy in Rucker a nightmare for brosmer he became truck stick Lane on second down third and up [Applause] the once again this is just a savy quarterback with some experience everything's breaking down the again where's my outlet knowing exactly where to get the ball and then put it right on that front shoulder P so the nuben can break the tackle a and get the [Applause] [Applause] firste Jason it did not look like and it's a subtle little check down but the fact that brosmer could get to that the fact that he ball placement wise put it right in a position if Newman has to stop if he slows down levali makes that tackle but he leads him and he leads to a big first down both on the defense on the field defense thaten will beIN pass interference Defense number 27 15yd penalty from the previous spot automatic first down they call those passes accurate and Advan a balls in the Minnesota program yeah and that was perfect and it set up this once again now we get a one-on-one we take a shot there is no effort by Allen whatsoever to turn around he goes right through the body and for an offense that was dying for big plays and explosive plays a season ago backto back chunk plays now in Carolina territory that's worth 34 yards Che again it to cus1 by the junior out of greensbor Travis Shaw 25 different run checks in this system for Bros 25 yeah and he loved to toss it to Darius Taylor an absolute stud a season ago but all freshman in yards per game they don't have them but 25 is a lot in an NFL Playbook or an NFL game plan you might have 10 to 15 in the Run game 25 different alerts 25 different checks and his great Harbo said I can't overload this QB he wants all of it second and for [Applause] brosmer a brock now that wasn't quite the accurate advancement but this is a big time catch Spencer knows he's going to get absolutely sandwiched on that little stick route and he doesn't care rosmer trying to protect him and throw him away from the outside contact but the problem is there's inside contact and Spencer says I don't care let me give you a manable third and one Minnesota was great on fourth down last this a third down and one and brosmer just pushes forward for a first down look at the big Right Guard Quin Carol right there flip-flo their guard and tackle a season ago 77 Carol a veteran graduated from Notre Dame started a tackle last year but his future is a guard and the big man and he is a big man it's 67 and 315 got his pads down and moved people Jason this is 67335 in Lewis 67 and 315 I mentioned to you A Center in Johnson it's 66320 take a look in the best of them the left tackle ursery shot to be a first round pi with the way that man moves that's a fully developed offensive line he lost his shoe that's the only thing that can get him off the field at this point you take a timeout for that they're going to use a timeout for the big guy shoe first down when we come back for the Gophers who are driving [Applause] [Music] you don't need the same Duracell batteries that help power Williams Racing until you do Duracell is a proud partner of three hours ago so they delayed the start one hour it's been raining intermittently during the game but a beautiful night and a great crowd these students don't care this gold out they have been waiting for this one PJ Fleck really good in non-conference games nfy ridicul ridiculous signed concealers no more paranoia now you just was like hours New England anymore so not quite as much paranoia and everybody can communicate that green on the back of the hel tells you car obviously brosmer under Center here with Minnesota one player on each side and they kill it at 15 seconds on [Applause] the is with that's okay when you're 6' and 220 lb and you've got a plan and a mission watch watch from the time he takes this ball kind of like elite point guards go right down the middle of the basketball court watch this until he feels that safety and he can make that little cut to get the yards after contact beforehand I'm going to go A to B as fast as I can and really manageable third and short at third and two big package in there for Minnesota zpp first [Applause] and well after all it is Minnesota so you know what that means we're going to have a jumbo package you can't have a PJ fle football team unless you got jumbo ursery does a terrific job Quin Carroll uses the buttocks on the back side that's 6 2ser 66 330 in his time if they are to believe be believed with his 10 yd split he's going to shatter records at the combine a big man that can moveis told us earlier he runs with the wide receivers rosmer deflected and incomplete that was hit at the line and so it was behind Spencer second and goal yeah and if it was not tipped at the line of scrimmage it's going to be a touchdown every offense in America runs this set they call it mesh you see the hands go up by Rucker not just a pass rusher has a feel when he doesn't get home to put those paws up that saved a touchdown that mesh route the shallow crosses cutting right across the field won't show up as anything but a pass break up but that was aown AC last Rucker counteraction nothing there down he goes he'll lose a yard Caleb cost from the secondary on the side I think both OC's as they talk to their staff over the course of this game are going to say what are we seeing what kind of pictures are we looking at in both sides Minnesota and Carolina putting those secondary Guys near the line of scrimmage putting the safeties in the nickel that's Jeff Collins right there on a critical I mean this is a a four-point play right here couple of tight ends in for brosmer on Third and [Applause] goal it's a hand off major out down he goes J Harris on the pursuit fourth and goal yeah the pit is manto man but watch this play I just mentioned these secondary players look at spitting splitting two blocks as Harris again a six-year player 5 years in North Carolina State the awareness to see the blocks coming to shoot the Gap to split it and then that four-point play hold these Gophers to a field goal attempt a highly accurate kicker Dron kich it was 23 for 27 last year for the opening points and he DED it off the upright [Applause] wow it's a hand off he was as good as it got in the Big 10 last [Applause] year that is one of those that I 99.9 he wears 99 perc of that sideline believe there is no chance he could possibly miss that game winners 50 plus winners DJ fle is looking at going that that is as big a gimme as you can ever ask for for one of the elite kickers but you know what is M Browns writing down no gim and openers ever well PJ Flex said look there's peace in it because you're going to know by the end of the game but there is anxiety in it because you don't know [Applause] yet still scoreless play action picks up the BL [Applause] the Lo [Applause] MCM PRI to the fumble holding Defense number seven yeny from the prev automa first Crossing for Minesota not a very penalized team last year it's on Aiden guby wow and once again these secondary players just making a difference on both ends of it unfortunately here seven is goby on the back ends a terrific job by McMillan A beating the block but guby is beat right there and you just got to let go making little contact but you can't hold ontak Thea 15 yard a dazzler for omaran Hampton the allam and that's how the first 15 minutes of this season will end what was a bigger thud the field goal off the upright or Hampton hitting the ground rushing not a very a caring man took a walk everywhere he looked people suffered anxiety ran High Hope dwindled hatred Rose his neighbors had lost trust in the York they're bringing a fresh perspective to your morning news we appreciate you joining us here for the news there is a big battle going on at City Hall stay no better way to start your day join us for Good Day New York weekday 7 to 10: a.m. coach Flack your first time seeing Max brosmer in game action how do you think he's settled in well he just got to be able to stay pois and calm in the pocket and uh he'll settle down as the game goes on uh we got to be able to help him out in the protection and the Run game as well thank some good and bad quite a big third and 17 on a little check down but then you come back and you throw at the feed and you miss a little high he will adjust that's what he says to everybody he will adjust long from Omar here's another breaking tack it's a first again he led the nation in yards after contact last year he's doing it again Cody lber had a great conversation with us you're going to see the linebacker here when you come from the side you've got a WP and you got to roll it's great to say it's really hard to execute so there's the W but there is no roll on top of it and he runs right through it over yard as he said the best Inge football the way on that a very talented linebacker lindenberg Johnson to throw snapping it off near side that's incomplete after some jockeying it's Ethan Robinson the transfer from Bucknell in the coverage this a third time where they've gotten JJ Jones into a situation where it is well a couple of them were Zone droppers the last two have been just this it is oneon-one it is you good on good Ethan Robinson a transfer from Bucknell gets his hands on him my hands are on you maybe a little reach me look I love that shot both are grabbing jerseys don't call it let them play second down seventh carry for Omar on Hampton and they go low that time carry Brown swep the ankle third down secondary players are active on both sides tonight Carolina trying to get to the line this could be a double Cadence situation to keep the blitz slowed down exactly what it is get to the line you don't let him and then you try to get that double Cadence to De is third down and Johnson climbing the pocket rolling left Johnson the first down he's got it and then what did Brown say he's a better Runner than you think n 65 225 he was never a dual threat quarterback coming out of high school he's the son of Brad Johnson who was not known for his running but you've got to be able to do this to step and to slide that's QB drills 101 I guarantee you Clyde Christensen who is working with the QBs now that is a drill you practice you dip your shoulder underneath that rush you step up not out not back step up into the pocket the Escape valve and go run a great look at Clyde Christensen Tom Brady pton Manning Super Bowls in Indie in Tampa and now back home as alma mater is an advisor coaching these [Applause] quarterbacks second and eight pressure from the near side from W Johnson got round then he spins it back in and there is a marker that was probably a pretty highrisk Choice kind of looked like the punt we saw in the first quarter foul hands the face Defense number 91 the to the goal automatic first down it's on the Minnesota native dein Easter and you know what he is sick and tired of messing around with that 5' 11 in guard that's getting underneath his pads and bothering him it's right here and Willie lampin the Right Guard watch him he gets can't even see him but look at he is Underneath Him and because of it these defensive tackles get sick and tired of it that's why he was a State title winner in wrestling because he gets low and uses L first down andal it's Hampton little he runs right into Easter in the pile still moving so Bryson NES the first team all ACC tight get in there late second and goal it is such an advantage has been a little more known for his receiving when you got a back like that and you know if you Dent the line of scrimmage at all and defensive coordinator Cory heatherman first year here in Minnesota knows it too a lot of bodies there and the average back you stop for nothing the elite backs still push that pile for five [Applause] short toss Hampton goes high and gets a couple of yards it'll be third down and goal lindenberg went underneath to cleave him down there's still four goers one on four and he still somehow someway picks up six feet can't settle for field goals on the road you go on the road into an environment like this you've got to find a way to punch it in seven pass of the night Johnson sees the pressure and Dives for theend Zone let's see it's very close [Applause] touchd we'll see if it stands for now the first Carolina TouchDown for Max Johnson touchdown not a body part hits once the tip of that football breaks the plane that front of that white goal line without I mean this is strength this is body control typically big lumbering guys fall down he doesn't he's got the strength to extend and Brad Johnson up in the stands say That's my boy that's my boy I didn't run for many touchdowns I threw for mine but he can run it better than me yeah the hand doesn't matter just so people watching know his hand went down he got into the End Zone it wasn't the elbow or the arm just the hand for Max Johnson to find the endone the transfer for Carolina gets in why always the couch does he need to go to September 6th and the bra battle Bryer and the Phillies or William and the take on Ellie De La Cruz and the r it's baseball night in America on Fox welcome back to Fox college football sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all state 7 nothing North Carolina on a touchdown run for the quarterback Max Johnson here's a good look once again of Clyde Christensen sitting there with him on the sidelines and a better look at Brad Johnson who I know like many that played in the 80s and 2000s so much of college football is unrecognizable he's gone from LSU gear to A&M gear now Carolina gear he used to develop he played for Bowen all those years at Florida State but it's a different game and you've got to maximize your opportunity in a transactional sport your opportunity is now two big time runs from his son on that drive Max is six rushing touchdown in college Brad had 10 in his entire college and NFL career but he did run for 10 yards in the Super Bowl on one carry this week big noon Saturday kicks off a huge season opener between eth rank pen state in West Virginia with the bigon kickoff cre coming to you live from rockus morgwn don't miss the most watch game window in college football beginning Saturday on Fox you been to Morgantown I have an opener in Morgantown not it's going to be insane they've been waiting how long to play college football started tailgating August 1st that might be a little conservative Neil Brown had them playing very well last year that could be an interesting game early on in the college football playoff discussions as Max brosmer [Music] has yard we heard from PJ fle with Allison we got to help Max Ros is a six-year veteran yes he's played a TN we've got to get the Run game going we've got to get the play action game going I think any any quarterback no matter how much time you played you want gims you want to get in Rhythm there has not been much in rhythm in this passing game there's been some checkdowns but you'd certainly like to see some of the Rhythm we watched it practice yesterday where that ball did not hit the ground we saw the confidence start to grow on the drive that nearly ended in the field goal they couldn't pay it off with points though on second and seven Carolina brings four and gets there and brosmer goes down Amari Campbell got in there is that Cedric gray or was that Amari Campbell CU he looked like the guy that did it for a lot of years and if you're watching Cedric you made it to the show he's got a Clum on his hand he's battled a hand injury all camp but I highlighted Quin Caroll earlier in the Run game of pushing people but gets the big man moving he gets him right he gets him left he runs right by him and he sets up a third an extra long Marty Campbell just got himself a birthday present it's his birthday today as it's third and 11 for his defense five coming this time rosmer has to climb and down he goes one more time he ran right into rzy again it's a loss of two I know they said he saw everything over five years in New Hampshire but what you've not seen is this chaos from Jeff Collins he's mixing blitzes this is an odd front right just one guy down over the center tells you it's an odd front three-man front and then you've got twists you've got stunts you've got people coming from every direction the line's having a hard time identifying and the veteran quarterback is seeing a blur of Carolina right now created a third three and out and Carolina gets the ball out of half by the way return to the and a Maring to the let see there's a flag on the near side there's a flag on the far side as Elijah huzzy got into Minnesota territory well there was a gopher blowing sideways and that tells you it's a block in the back from Poss shield and it's hard for these guys they've been waiting to hit people it was a fierce block but it's one that you've just got to put your body in front don't look for that knockout shot because it's going to going to move Carolina back that's Deonte McMillan who is down and injured for Minnesota as they discuss the marker McMillan who's been around the block in college football four years at TCU they're talking of m brown about the markers a go blowing side doesn't like whatever was just told to him see the tape and he'll see exactly what you're going to see in just a second and the way those guys fall is a pretty good indicator for these officials as well and they fall forward on that block pretty simple call now the other conversations about the penalty further down the field and this is first game right I got to go hit somebody I get a chance in the team's phase of things to show what I can do and be physical the most physical Camp match in Carolina the most tackling the most scrimmaging there two foul on the one in each team illegal formation kicking team F illegal Blind Side block receiving team North Carolina has chosen to offset those fouls and we will reick because they are different yardage different types of foul Carina first so an illegal formation by Minnesota you're going to see the the block come right here once again just watch how that Defender Falls Anytime they fall forward like that it is a clear indicator right in order to fall forward I've gotten hit right in the back Mike Pereira Mike Pereira for the first time in 2024 am I right welome back Mike Pereira boy it's good to be back but I had hate to figure this penalty out this is one with a foul by each team actually North Carolina got the option they could keep the ball but they would then be penalized from the 38 yd line for their Blind Side the option which was to offset them and then force a oh you look good you look good for 2024 Mike Pete thank you from a wedding to the command center elah H will watch this go out of BSO by car by the 73y old guy he's seen a little bit of football hasn't he Javari ritzy thrilled with a couple of sacks for Carolina on the drive wo Nelly iPhone 15 with tons meats and cheeses but definitely some Mojo maybe freshly sliced since 1956 it's a Jersey Mike's thing Fox college football is sponsored by T-Mobile America's largest 5G Network and by Jersy Mike a above PJ fle the Minnesota head coach refers to Brown as a sneaky Mentor when Ma Brown finished his first season and his first stint at Carolina Fleck was eight but then PJ when he was trying to get into coaching sent a note to everybody he could send it to through his coach at Northern Illinois when he was a wide receiver Joe Novak and there is the response to Joe Novak from m brown they have been friends since and they are now we but you got to do it I would argue there's no other coach in all of college football that others seek wisdom from more than that brown and he he's getting Texs from Matthew MCC and from all these famous people and a very giving Soul his quarter Max [Applause] Johnson tipto a [Applause] run and they are now on the sidelines against one to the tight end the problem is you've got an elite fouryear starting corner right on that TI end in a 5050 ball a little bit behind n Falls right into the hands of w and un like Robinson earlier or Brian earlier that saw a ball go through his hands this stud uhuh this senior uhuh time is now and what a play to flip the momentum and emotion in this building his sixth interception the last four years it comes off of Max Johnson now Minnesota tries to punch it in play action rosmer throws it driver is stopped the tight end position has been so important to them in situations like this in the recent past and they don't have that mismatch maker so you try to create it with play action and horizontal and a terrific job by huzzy coming all the way across the field to tackle Donald Driver Bo the Penn State transfer Christian driver there usually that sneak concept that corner gets caught up across the field uh-uh excellent [Applause] play Inter Jason this is pretty good for the big up there is a load of experience over here you watch Carol get beat in the passing game but that time he Ms the defender to create the hole and Greg Johnson e [Applause] the great Mar Barber Lawrence withi W four years he's been doing this in Minnesota turn Queen's best sleep guarantee Wendy's so if anyone ever tries to tell you they have Saucy nugs at home you might want to see what else are hiding cuz that person lies e we the success of the team imagine your krint two under coach Prime while 12 rank Utah makes his opening statement as a big 12 member and number here's yeah and that defense really Shifting the momentum in this game but throughout it first year defensive coordinator Cory heatherman has been telling his guys we are fine the times they move the ball it's because we hurt ourselves losing contain and with penalties just focus on your tack Le having good pad levels staying low violent and continue to at all for Johnson earlier in the B game as it's second down and and this one to the side is dropped incomplete to set up third down it's off the hand of JJ Jones so JJ had the beautiful Jumpman catch on the first third down and he falls down and that's one sure you'd like to see on the front shoulder but you got to help Max knows that that's one of those high percentage throws that looks right there says that didn't happen the last two weeks of camp but because it did now I got to deal with third and set it off the tops are on the truth will be told third Andes got breaks it down and goes down Danny stgo helped out chip on the outside there with J join here's the problem with chipping Jason if you don't chip right you actually can really hamper your offensive tackle and that time Howard Samson was expecting to chip one way but the momentum pushed him inside and gives Joiner the opportunity to get to the QB what is chipping right there that is that TI end or running back helping that tackle chipping trying to throw a shoulder so that guy can't get started but that shoulder led to momentum for Joiner to get homeing back to return [Applause] set yard and that is it Saturday baseball night in America on Fox the Braves take on NL East rival Bryce Harper and the Phillies still raise the NL East and the Brewers with their big lead Central taking on one of the most EXA they local listing for the game in your area I'll be honest sometimes you don't know what you don't know I really felt like this was going to be an unbelievably compelling close game I didn't know if offenses in these veteran QBs might make more plays I think we're feeling these defenses on both sides are playing downhill and aggressively and there's a reason that those guys in the desert have this as a very very close game it's a blowout last year Carolina put up 31 points behind 414 in the a from Drake [Applause] May Minnesota leaves the dock from the 35 a long ride there and finally a hand off to Major for a game of three so Minnesota AED 21 points a game last year for the first time in 12 seasons and when they were rolling in 2019 they got to that Outback ble they were very efficient offensively they threw it to run it they were an RPO team that was Tanner Morgan that was spraying it everywhere and yet their identity Jason as you said earlier like doesn't matter who it is like huge offensive linemen that just move the line of scrimmage and their efficiency for PJ Fleck was off the charts but the last couple years have been a far cry from that second and seven driver in the back field Ros looks him off it's a little but he's it the tight up and it'll be third down coming uper up in his season with the go what do you like third and one I like pushing that pile and there you see Greg Harbo right in the middle of it and he was brutally honest like those numbers you just put up I heard if you don't produce I know what this business is about got to be a lot more effective and third and ones are a good way of doing it snap do first out of [Applause] it nice job by brosmer here he has played so much football is not going to freak out with that low s and once again it is just big people in the time of possession that's the one thing here that's jumping out a little bit Minnesota is grinding that is their game we're going to grind and we're going to grind But ultimately need some big plays to follow him what an opportunity between the 40s here with a V QB if you want to take a shot Ros the transfer from New Hampshire with a hand off to maor he gets Sid swiped Lane turned himself a missile these safeties on both sides are not afraid to come downhill and once again that that's a little bit of an indicator to Greg Harbaugh oh oh you want to be this active you're going to pull the trigger that fast to split a double team you're going to pull the trigger that fast to make the tackle at three yards then you've got to ride that make that fake and throw it over their head Harbo who grew up in Raleigh and refers to North Carolina as quote Chapel Hill because of his history as a young in North Carolina Ros play action over the it first that is their game we're going to grind we're going to grind ultim that is a a nice job a a deep outcut that is not an easy throw that's a high degree of difficulty but you see the play action you see brosmer do an excellent job of getting the feet set and then all the way across the field the Deep out there between corner in safety and one of those chunk plays that if this offense which is built to run is going to be able to run then do that get those Chunk in explosive plays eventually points will follow it's their longest play of the game so far at 20 for the goers that was an extraordinary number nearly 50% of the re receiving yards a season ago effort Darius Taylor saying yeah you should be my Tot but he's batt a little bit of injury in Camp a broken tackle a little bit of a spin cycle there talk a lot of talk right lot of talk yeah and PJ said this guy is this guy's special now note you're not watching an NFL game there is a two minute time out in each in college football do you feel enriched love it something new happen not a warning oh it's not a warning stop it's we're tied at off in theend we'll see how applicable they were after [Applause] theen a 19 chance we talked about this Old Line doing a nice job of just tar not in an illegal way you target those blocks look at the body on a body look at the big left guard Tyler Cooper sixe player as well getting to that second level remember the first couple drives Jason and you saw the blur of Carolina in that back field they were punching the line of scrimmage these last couple drives you felt the wave of the girth of this offensive line for Minnesota the major put his pads down and Runner right behind him 35 game playing at home at Oklahoma now it transfer to Minnesota he's in the back field first and goal he'll carry it again off the stacked up drives he's just of the line Second andal Carolina use aout here it's a good question they get the ball to begin the second half Jason I I don't know how much trust they have in their offense right now but look at look at body on a body body on a body if it weren't for the power in ekko's lower half and the strength as those two Brahma bows took on each other that was going to be another touchdown for Marcus that was Major power second and goal Straight Ahead rosmer dips the shoulder [Applause] where [Applause] he that was just a straight rug match right there bro and brosmer told us yesterday he loves his team he's been here since December impressed them like why why do you like these guys so much you know what's striking me over the course of this first half because when you've got a team that is built by offensive linemen you tend to love your teammates in football team yeah it's yeah big guys right callup right there he's 270 lb tied end there's just like no nonsense like these guys sacrifice lineman sacrifice this is a sacrificial program and brosmer love him being a part of it he doesn't like that as much though he said the one thing he was excited about was to see his teammates Expressions when they were in the End Zone he scored that touchdown but he was the leader for a trip for team bonding Allison he knew he had to do everything he could to build chemistry with this team quickly and maximize his one year here in Minnesota so in may he took a dozen of the goers down to and all that football but these were the best times the most memorable times out on the lake Max's favorite spot playing cards the guitar a trip to the Braves game where he uh teammates custom jerseys with their names on it and he told us it just gave us a chance to learn about each other show them where I'm from and build that chemistry and connection you can't always see but is definitely tangible yeah Allison that's a maturity of a guy that's been around the block that wasn't really recruited out of high school had to do it for five years at the FCS level and I call it connective tissue Tom Brady will be on the calls with Fox he calls it being endearing endearing you want youram to be around you I love the way that Tom frames that and this guy's got his teammates not just because of a lead today fully behind his his back which leads us to our Pacific Life game summary sponsored by Pacific Life creating Financial Security for nearly 60 years this is one of the 10,000 ah here's how it's happened so far major big debut as a go for 73 yard and a touchdown 22 runs no surprise NOP and remember Newan a year ago filling in for Taylor of a guy that's been around times St 30 no problem for Max Johnson this passing game for Carolina it is out of rhythm and it is out of whack how do you call it with three timeouts in the ball back we'll see Johnson over the middle got an easy first down it's JJ Jones all the time in the world and with those three timeouts in your back pocket clock stops every first down so you play fast but not in a hurry Johson another throw that's to the sideline it's caught once again that's Nate McCollum who had the big day last year and there is a marker down the crowd reacts in a very favorable way off number [Applause] seven side swipe from Hamilton The Freshman yeah that's Hamilton going down the field and blocking right here with the ball thrown down the field that is a that's just a no no before it's caught he must be anticipating that ball is going to be cut he can't do that that is just a a young player a red shirt freshman a lot of young pups Uber talented guys now four stars Big Time recruits huge production of high school and again that's a that's an effort I'm trying to do the right thing I'm trying to block pass but not in a hurry That Swing of real estate is how can you even make the argument to use those three timeouts we'll see what this play does Carol gets it out [Applause] of Smith now they might just let it roll I think you do this is one of the in Minnesota felt good about this that that's Howard Samson and if he looks big he is big he's 68350 lbs but those feet are not the most Nimble they tried to Chip and give him some help earlier on an open Edge it is Advantage Joiner Advantage Smith Advantage Edge rushers for these goers redt that if this next play is an incompletion Minnesota can get the ball back I would agree with that so you better find a completion or run it but it or find a way to get Hampton the ball because he has been damaging with the ball in his hands Mar on Hampton 11 carries 55 Yard he has not scored yet he's a returning allamerican who had over 1500 y last year 1500 15 touchdowns it was him and Oli Gordon down in still that did that at this level 22 yd difference in that offensive pass interference and you can just see how it took the STS out of this drive they've got to get to the 48 just short of Midfield Johnson will scoop it for Hampton and let him run for a while lindenberg spikes him down Cody lindenberg Joker tattoo on his arm just created some Havoc that's a nice job of not having a horse collar tackle as well because it have been really easy for guys you see how he attacked the shoulder he knew exactly where to approach that tackle he approached it with the name plate may have had a penalty and kept this drive alive a local [Applause] at Mike Hillel and Chris Peterson the state F in Los Angeles guys yeah welcome to Los Angeles and the State Farm half time show taking you from there down to here uh maybe his first game jits but not the display we can say in the first half of this game but it was Minnesota's uh defense that led to its first score and kind of sparked this offense as we take a look at State Farm halftime highlights coach yeah little bit stale first half until we got our man Justin Wally got that pick little pressure on on Johnson here and awesome this was the offense that they had all first half Justin Wally 70 yard return sets up Marcus majes for the 5 yd score and then and then they another score right after this they kind of like sparked him they had a nine-play drive it's first time that you see Minnesota throwing the ball downfield at the 20- yard completion to Daniel Jackson I'd like to see a little more of that AO you're exactly right what I was thinking watching the first half is the players are now realizing the severity of every decision that Max Johnson interception in practice all the last three weeks of Camp as soon as it gets picked coach blows a whistle offense back on the ball not in a game now that interception leads to Minnesota having the ball and going down and getting points these players her body is currently still trying to figure out wait this is the real deal the real game every decision matters I think in the second half we'll see a lot cleaner football in life without Drake May for North Carolina Max Johnson 410 28 yards passing in the first half second half coming up moments here hey meanwhile coach Prime hey he's the talking college football last year tonight Colorado already on upset alert early on kador Sanders who's looking like a Hos candidate already bring him back and was play similar fate ticket out welcome back to those old stadiums we care so much about but the college football playoff format has changed 12 teams will now have a shot at glory my EV going on now it's St and Shop s and we know what a scene it was from Michigan last season something Ohio State's new additions have been learning in was there something like a shot at the Heisman to keep these stars coming back again and what could ever lead to the post Nick saving era in Tuscaloosa what could inspire a year two turnaround for Coach Prime back here wondering is Texas officially back ticket out back here where the new begin I love college football so beautiful welcome back welcome back welcome back uh hor Shack Vinnie Barberino I am Freddy Boom Boom Washington welcome back uh change seems to be the big storyline going into this 2024 season new college football playoffs new faces and new places uh we got replac Legends at Michigan and Alabama but giveing your most intriguing storyline going into the season for me it's simple it's the new faces and the new places I think about USC Oregon Oklahoma Texas a coach of mine always said will you be a thermostat or thermometer will USC adjust to the climate of the Big 10 or will they make the big 10 adjust to their climate simply put will USC have to figure out how are we going to stop the two back game how are we going to stop counters Powers Zone scheme runs or are they going to force Iowa are they going to force michigans Wisconsin to figure out how are yall going to deal with the spread Tempo no huddle how are yall going to deal with that man on your screen right there D in that one on his jersey how are you going to deal with Miller Moss will they be a thermostat or a thermometer like it for me I like this new 12 team playoff it's been 10 years I can't believe it's taken us this long I think there's going to be so much more fan interest throughout the season and in the postseason it's going to be so much longer the first four uh highest rate conference Champs to get buys me as a coach I'd get my right arm to get a buy to rest my team to game plan for two weeks I think the next 5 through eight home playoff that's big those campuses are going to go nuts big and then you know 9 through 12 the next the next four there's probably going to be four more so there's going to be eight teams debated probably for those last spots it's going to make college football even that more intriguing as you mentioned still going to be some pressure on the college football committee to get it right once again and the thing about it is you can lose two games and still be in it right and years past that was not the case hey season two under coach Prime is officially under way and uh shador Sanders is doing everything he can to overcome Dakota State team for me I like this Marcus major making it into the end zone one of two touchdowns from Minnesota they by seven at the break full Trapper beefs Energy emergency [Music] TR to really put a stamp early in the year about West Virginia football and what our team looks like morg West Virginia it's a tough place I mean it's a hornet nest they love their team it'll be a great environment a great challenge their quarterback played really well late in the year and they they're super super talented and they have a really good Edge rusher on number 11 of the Under Pressure stay consistent and staying who you are it's going to be our biggest strength it's going to be special College footall back what a way to it's a head to to get you ready for E rank p West Virginia coverage begins at 10 Eastern on Fox back here in studio hey Colorado jumped from one win to four wins last year with Deon Sanders taking over the program and now in year two under coach Prime All Odds once again on the Buffalo this season taking on North Dakota State remember they lost six straight the end the season after that three and 0 St see what they got they still got these two guys Sanders Travis H what you want to see here is Travis Hunters acceleration after that quick hitch and that c Turning Away running away from the safety phenomenal play right there by that offense I don't think Hunters miss the plays playing defense as well as you know sador also has a weapon in Jimmy horn Jr that is some good looking football by Shir and Jimmy Jimmy horn there I'll tell you what we know Colorado's got receivers and a really good quarterback 433 yards already for should door three touchdowns but uh the defense still suspect in the first half no doubt about it uh North Dakota State they scored on four of their first five offensive possessions two touchdowns two field goals in the first half that's why Colorado Trail but you know what as long as you out score Sanders Hunter once again Hunter 129 receiving yards two touchdowns in this game Colorado up threatening again Southern Utah Utah the's back cam RIS how about this I did Cam Rising Signing Day in 2018 to the university ofas 2018 and here we are in 2024 and he's still out there throwing touchdown passes yeah missed all of last season with a knee injury back five TDS already in this game through first half 35 nothing Utah Rolling Kansas as long as they got George in the tendance Jaylen D got to keep him healthy too if they do these guys are going to make some noise he can run and we know he can throw and they're rolling over where is Lyon wood Aro uh it's back there in the you know what I'm saying back right next to they're getting behind the wood sh right now that's what's happening right now let's go back to Colorado man shador Sanders look the offense is incredible shador Sanders already 433 passing yards in this game yeah but that's not who I think of I think of Coach Prime Colorado is relevant last year and this year because of him they're not relevant as a football team yet they got some really good skill players if they get that defense going a little bit being able to stop the run the o line protect protect shador a little bit better then they're going to get relevant you're exactly right Mike you said something earlier in the Green Room want to bring it to National Television I don't think Colorado can fix its defense this year that's not something you can do starting now what you can do is focus on turning the ball over when you have a highly explosive offense if your defense is suspect so long as you force turnovers you can still find a way to win games because you can get your offense more possessions I don't believe that Colorado's defense is going to become a staun at stopping the run I don't think all of a sudden they're going to fit the Run gaps a lot better but what they can do rather than getting sacks get Force fumbles rather than getting tips get interceptions fix the defense as it pertains to turnovers and that'll help the offense out they have settled down a little bit in the second half the defense no doubt about it so you know these first games working out the Kinks the next week is going to be very interesting against Nebraska of course as always a big robbery they were down actually 20 to 17 at the half they scored seven points to take a lead there inside the 5 yd line right now Colorado threatening see what happens and that one third and goal there hey 24 to 20 Max Johnson uh he's got a turn over in his game but he's also got this running touchdown his dad was happy in the stands his team down seven second half coming up so it's going to come down to this can they do [Music] it oh no they missed it wait a minute there's a flag on the [Applause] FL 126 first on the scene CL gas think of this as a poison cloud of death it's heading your direction I won't leave you behind fall back 911 lonar Premier September Verma on the 5 and 10:00 news on Fox 5 time now for our first half checkin sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all state well the answer my friend wasn't in the wind necessarily but it was not picturesque in the rain so far in half number one here in Minneapolis 14 to7 not a ton of offense and time now Brock hu for Next Level moments sponsored by AT&T business reliability for your business is our business well they love to call Jeff Collins the defensive coordinator the minister of Mayhem and that's exactly what Max brosmer was feeling in that first quarter Mayhem three sacks look at all the Carolina blue arrows they're coming at you from Every Which Way stick and move and just in the face of brosmer creating some of that chaos but the big play was this one up seven was Carolina and Minnesota said hey hold on a second we play defense too and Wally here with the enormous interception a four-year starter that wasn't just satisfied with getting the pick that flipped the field and just uh Jason what it really allowed them to do was like a heavyweight getting the guy in the corner and just pounding on you right that was a middle weight that was dodging and sticking and punching and making all the plays but that flipped it and allowed just the heavy weight to start to Lean Into You touchdown touchdown Marcus major pound in the football and just stylistically the second quarter all Minnesota so if you're North Carolina second half you get the ball first what can you do what should you do I think you got to continue to Beed he your best player I told you yesterday and told the crew that the best player in this building tonight is Omari on Hampton and you've got to find ways they ran a little a little scoop sh screen there on that final drive but I wouldn't mind a crack screen I wouldn't mind a gap screen I wouldn't mind obviously running the football as well but your best player got to be a factor in the second half on the return at auding a heavy getting the guy in the corner that mid half he said we have a lot of inexperienced guys out there and they're playing up tight all of them so that's a concern he knows his tackles are getting beat and he's going to continue to try and help them and chip but a lot of it is also on the quarterback he said he has to move we need to use in this direction and get the ball out a little bit quicker really he feels the turnover has been the differences in this game and he did tell us before that Connor Harold could play at quarterback if things didn't go well he said I'm not ready to make that change now but if things don't change offensively we will we shall see that's a high snap to start him off and it is Hampton look two teams all of last year had a top 20 Rush and pass offense LSU and North Carolina they're not used to this no this is not stylistically what they like to do they've been Tempo they've been spread they've been RP but this is some of what brown told us we've got to be more complimentary I've got to protect my defense and the pounding they took in the second quarter the seven minutes down in time of possession this is a big Drive Omari on Hampton second straight touch and Minnesota collapses on it down he goes Danny sto once again well just a Nifty little stunt at the point of attack watch this watch the two goers Go in different direction and some of that inexperience a true freshman left guard Howard Samson the big tackle making his first start you know what you do against [Applause] inexperience Forest andth Carolina they're noted no this Johnson with a pocket Far Side Long throw to the sideline and that Ison with a beautiful grab how'd he do it and he had Justin wall in his Hip Pocket these two tangled earlier on that interception this time nesbet has ball he's got two feet down he controls through contact you know what you call that good on good he didn't start football until the summer before his junior year of high school now he's a first team all ACCC tight end you see that with Pops that plays 11 years in the NFL like his does a hand off a b that was Maverick baronowski tack third downi is all neck Team all neck team look at the size of his neck okay what part should I FOC on the width it's like a cobra and they strike you can see it in these bio pictures man linebackers whose NE like go outside of their helmet that's a cobra ready to pounce second down that's a run for Hampton and he thrusts forward for about third and one and a half that's why I answer you are in football mode this has been a very physical game so far here we go right the liting the substi and the amount of pressure you may see of tackle lenberg and Hampton just ramed him listen to [Applause] this Jason I don't know that was head on I don't know if that was a side tackle lindenberg said headon fight the ball side tackle rap and roll that was just hanging on for dear life and unable to stop a traint out Darwin Barlo in the transfer from USC has his first and he's near Midfield to do by the way tackle AR on Hampton break that tack on both sides of it I mean they love lindenberg and lindenberg he man when you're seeing this guy tomorrow what's the key and this has been the fundamentals Tau bite the ball when he's coming right at you wrap and roll and then sweep the ankle and really none of it's effective it's like trying to hit one of these Elite pitchers in baseball like good luck like that's what you want to do that's the plan but to execute it brutally difficult second down throw it's a quick slant and it's caught once again the tight end Nesbit this is good I mean this is Chip Lindsay he's been doing it a while at offensive coordinator as well and been highly productive andar excuse me nzb here right on the quick little SL what your best players the ball I said to you coming out like get Hampton the ball he's your best player your second best player is Bryson NB and there you see chip Lindsay right up here a veteran staff cly Christensen I talked about being a real great sounding board as an analyst and QB coach but Chip's done it a long time in a lot of places and he's made a good living doing it because he typically Max the strengths of his best players he got Hampton back in after a couple of touches from Barlo Johnson wants to dump it off it's a screen it's the tight end it's his brother Jake Johnson and it sets up about a yard to get but how about this brotherto brother Max to Jake Johnson how cool is that you do it in the backyard growing up and once again you get situation here on third picking up the tempo Mar Straight Ahead that is a gim in veteran staff chist I talked about being Brown says about this kid Omar Hampton he's like the most evened person you could possibly imagine Which flies in the face of him flying in the face of Defenders all he does work look at the pellets up and down his arm on a hot sticky night in Minnesota yeah he's going to take Huntington Bank Stadium home with him it's a toss to mum on the end this a textbook drive on adjustments you heard Brown tell Allison we're just stuck we're not moving the ball right at you horizontal movements creativity it out wide that's a quick hit to Hamilton he broke one tackle to the 15 right I mean look at the look at the spray chart on this drive this is how you put a defense that was dictating to you back on their heels as we got to go for down they had two guys with a catch in the whole first half there are now six Tar Heels with a reception look at those go for suck win there is a lot of huffing and puffing cuz Carolina's finally got that engine started Lucas finnessy is the one down the Wisconsin Nat did you know you can save with good RX even if you have insurance you know I thought be a Target longest drive of the first half nine plays 13 on this one as you said Johns AER and he stood up stonewalled and driven back for a loss on the play Danny stgo one more time pretty good discipline by the veteran sto and his buddy dein Williams was right behind him that's really hard when they have fed you the Beast right up the middle of it you just want to cheat you want to cheat but that is textbook sound Gap assignment defense short TOS he goes horce stsk got him first Robson the deal that's that's how you bring this guy it's the only chance you have against the contct back in America a season ago one guy can't do it as you said stsk gets him to stop his feet and when he is stopped go [Applause] or loss of four third and 14 Carolina's been great on third down perfect on the drive fourman rush quickit to the outside one broken Tackle by Hampton and now he's finished off down the sideline that's 61230 Deon Williams so they're just about the same size but you see if he's got any momentum going and you can hit your head all you want de I get it you're right there in nine out of 10 backs you make the tackle on as he PS his chest you know what that looked like looked like Brady Quinn they went to the same High School doublin Coffman I know Brady did that a couple times hit himself in the head come on come come on offer Bernett from 29 that is good and we'll see if Carolina can make the Miss field goal earlier from Minnesota ma Brown's team back on the board oh look at that jet stream weather oh Bo Yep they're calling it an atmospheric River is caling Insurance protect the stuff you love with rers insurance and by Subway Minnesota's defense was on the field for more than eight minutes in a very go like drive for North Carolina on a coming out of half timee that first half exactly what T PJ fle want and that is dominating time of possession over seven minutes but now it is flipped on the other side it's a complimentary football we're talking about third down conversions an enormous part of it in a 17 playay Drive the only bummer for Max tap is it didn't end in seven they had been perfect on third down on the drive they were stopped into the red zone as reading will be back to receive for the Gophers boy drives it anding will let it go through the end zone downstairs Allison Williams talk to PJ FL yeah and I asked him what changed for his offense and Max brosmer as the game went on in that first half and he said the biggest thing was up front they simplified things you guys mentioned UNC defensive coordinator Jeff Collins he's the minister of Mayhem right he wants to be simple but really look complicated and those complicated looks were causing problems for the offensive lineup with Minnesota so PJ said we really just simplified things we focused on getting a hat on a hat and letting the effort take over and letting that size advantage that length and that weight get to Jeff Collins front the dri you're the first to punch instead those from Jeff cins has got to do a little more in this second half off play action he rolls and he throws across his body that's incomplete and Jeff Collins defense sets up a second down and 10 Elijah huzzy got the hand in and Jeff Collins right he lost his job at Georgia Tech he finds a home here with m brown and they talked about complimentary football being deeper but man was he energized in our meeting be sure was I think a couple things number one best guy to work for number two he had tons of options and he went to a place where he's recruited or recruited against a lot of the Personnel he knows what they've got and there's a bunch of differ makers in that FR s in a veteran second that's really limited Dage tonight taken after a yard May power e final man after Evans got in first okay so here's one of those the truth will be told moments okay third and nine we got to play our style now you're going to play into Carolina's hands you don't have me in the corner where you can just body blow let's see if there's a creative pressure here and just how aggressive Greg Harbo the OC from Minnesota wants to be against these looks it's one of those trust plays you trust this new transfer you trust Max bmer and all the things you talked about this play call said when we to him I TR that that comes out of my going to go well let see INE he wanted driver fourth down coming up that was a great call and actually rosmer threw that thing early with some anticipation this ball is out of his hands well before driver breaks and he just can't quite go get it Bros knows just about everything was right it was just one yard in front a beat early and Driver couldn't go get it fourth three and out for the Carolina defense and let's see how tired the Minnesota defense here see what UFO get this a this one goes tumbling inside the 30 inside the 25 the tell you how these hit this with all this funky where is7 y on that UFO I turn it I rock it it [Music] r c there cuz he's really not that little he just happens to be 511 290 lbs and he the read on it you know the one thing about Lin he reminds me of the old Big 12 defensive player of the for Puna was a big 12 defensive player of the year built exactly the same 511 300 not prototypical but look how long his arms are those are not the arms of a 511 guy and that's how he's able to do this his arms are nearly as long look at him next to his buddy Trey Green the right tackle there I mean he's got he's got arms of a 65 guy he's got leverage like a fire hydrant and he's a monster to deal with he's a phenomenal he the only returning starter for this team by only as a fromg transer fromex bfield is a fresman left guard Green in the for the big man right there 7 making his first start look at the we'll check the marker Johnson's hurt oh no oh go [Music] to it's a penalty against Brian that will lead to a first down and maybe Conor Harold coming into the ball game it was ferocious man coverage behind there was nowhere to go that's the second hold we've seen are the Gophers on the back end because they will get sticky back there Hampton does a great job initially of stifling that rush but it's a hard job like a pastor's wife it can be a very lonely place it really is I mean it is such a hard position All Eyes in this building they're not judging a Right Guard or the end every eyeball judges a quarterback on every single play and moms carry that weight they sense it they feel it they hear it in ways that's hard for me to it's kind of hard for me to watch to be honest with you because you also know how much her son is Ed word and multiple stops and places and adversity to just fight for this opportunity and a devastating injury you don't always think about the human element of families and especially the moms who nurture and grow and provide so much support and you can see briad briad knows it he' been through battles for 15 years in the league he knows it he probably wants to fix it but Mom they empathize and they feel every single bit of it you know there's so much hope before a season starts and so much joy in this game and what it can be for a season that maybe
