buildings in downtown Salt Lake City near the Delta Center will be getting taller by about 200 ft the city just approved that and other zoning changes and it paves the way for the revitalization project with Utah's new NHL owners to expand the Delta Center and two blocks East here with details new specialist Lindsay erens so Lindsay is that a noticeable difference 200 feet or so yeah deie so if you take a look over my shoulder you can see the tallest building in Downtown Sal Lake City that is the Astro Tower it's that white square one well the zoning changes approved would make that 150 ft taller but we talked to Salt Lake City officials today who say that those uh tall buildings will still come with some public approval I definitely think we'll break the 500 fot Mark it's almost certain that Salt Lake Skyline is going to change with the plans to revitalize downtown it wouldn't surprise me if we're pushing 600 ft or taller the city's planning director Nick Norris says zoning changes approved by the city council last night do three main things buildings can go up to 600 ft but the city will approve if they're taller than 200 they also approved pushing the buildings back farther from the sidewalks and they'll allow for more urban signs like jumbotrons there could be large monitors where outside people could gather to actually watch it as if they were inside the arena the changes also paved the way for a parking garage and expanding the Delta Center foot print we think that it it strikes a balance between being the Time Square and being whatever the name of the square outside the Delta Center is Sol Lake leaders stress that Smith Entertainment Group won't be able to just build without input we will be able to stipulate more carefully than we ever could in an ordinance what the expectations are what the recourse is what the outcomes need to be Victoria Petro is the chair of Salt Lake City Council the body that gives the changes the final say we are preserving our rights to to be Progressive with this but also protect those things that we know are sacred and important to our community now despite the zoning changes moving forward one major piece of this plan has yet to happen that's the city's contract with SG that still has to get legislative approval and it has until Sunday to be sent to them so when will this contract be sent by September 1st now once that legislative committee gets the contract they have 30 days to give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down with their recommendations now we are told by city leaders that they plan to potentially vote on the sales tax increase that would help fund this whole thing in early November reporting live in downtown I'm Lindsay ER so I'll send it back to you all right we can start to see some changes all right Lindsay thank you
