they're lined up the students they're packing Mountain America Stadium for the Kenny Dillingham debut as the Arizona State head coach opening week kickoff week presented by Taco Bell Southern Utah Arizona State as the sundevils will kick off a new era with Kenny Dillingham the first Arizona State Alum to come back as they head coach and the youngest head coach in the country just 33 years of age Kenny Dillingham takes over a program that he grew up watching as a Canon of course in Arizona State graduate as well along with the College Football Hall of Famer Lincoln Kennedy Roxy Bern with you glad you're with us for Pack 12 Football tonight the debut of Kenny Dillingham as the coach of the sundevils and just your thoughts Lincoln a new era for Arizona State football well a new era but if you turn back to clock one year ago the the Sun Devil struggled they only won five games out of seven uh five out of seven and then or and more importantly they had their time where they couldn't score when they didn't score more than 21 points they usually loss when they scored at least 40 points or more they want football games they're trying to duplicate that by bringing back a guy as you mentioned Kenny dham who did a good job at Oregon for their offense when he was there yeah Dynamic play caller we saw what he did for Bo Knicks he's hoping to do the same for a true freshman quarterback celebrating his 20th birthday tonight the debut for Jaden rashada the new quarterback and just the second true freshman to ever start an opener for the sundevils well happy birthday young man and welcome to Big Time football he's going to have a a strong test out of the southern Utah Southern Utah could score some points which of puts pressure on the opposing offense to try to keep Pace with them and Jaden Rashad can really throw the football so talented you'll see it but opposite ends of the spectrum when you look at Justin Miller an experienced quarterback who's an old whack performer last year for southern Utah he started a game in sundevil stadium which rashada hasn't yes 2800 yards throwing the football around but one of the things that Miller is also good at is using his lce extend plays Roxy we've seen it time and time again on film where he can make other teams mess up where defense look like they're out of place by just using his legs he is the second active leading passer in the FCS level so Southern Utah the opponent Kenny Dillingham the debut a new era of Arizona State football kicks off next on Pack 12 Network the run out for the Arizona State sundevils to open the 2023 season here at home against Southern Utah favorable schedule for the sunds this year with eight of the 12 games at home only four Road games and all three nonconference games for Arizona State right here at Mountain America Stadium and there is the youngest coach of the country 3 years of age Kenny Dillingham coming back to his Alma moer did a great job as the offensive coordinator last year for Dan Lanning at Oregon and the first Alum to come back and Lead this program and it's been a tough week for Arizona State as you well know on the other side delaye Fitzgerald in his second year at Southern Utah very successful run at Southern Virginia and Frostburg State and now Delane Fitzgerald in year two last year they played Utah got thumped but they hung with Utah for about 17 18 minutes before some mistakes and it snowball in southern Utah in Salt Lake City last year and he's confident though coming in here feeling they've got a chance to compete tonight with Arizona State well they really feel they do I mean because they know how to score points and as I mentioned in the opening Arizona state had had some struggles last year uh scoring points so it's can it can be a little bit of an offensive battle and suddenly Utah feels they have the the power to stay with it it is a warm night as you'd expect at the desert 104° approaching kick and yes that's part of the home field advantage for Arizona State where story delay Fitzgerald was saying yeah we practice outside we're at 6,000 elevation just about but we don't get temperatures like this it's about 20 to 25° cooler right as you look at Dario longto the grad transfer from Cal will kick off for [Applause] ASU so they're trying to get used to the heat right even though they can deal with some of the other elements altitude but 5- six last year for southern Utah they went two and three in the whack was the most wins for a southern Utah team since 2017 Arizona State coming off just a three- win season change of head coach and the Kenny Dillingham air is underway as longto kicks it into the end zone bringing it out for southern Utah and hit before the 15 and dropped outstanding coverage getting downfield from Arizona State as they were all over that kickoff return and hustling downfield for the sun doubles was Joshua Arnold well you watch the way this hole closes you look on the replay as he's coming up fi look all the white jerseys disappear because they're swallowed up by Maron jerseys Jordan Washington on the return for southern Utah from the 15 the veteran quarterback Miller who's from Irvine Southern California native First Team all whack last year and they'll hand it off on first down and smothered after a minimal gain good Pursuit from Arizona State Tristan Monday leading the charge defensively for a gain of maybe one well we know the Sun Devils traditionally like to be big up front with their defensive tackles and want to be speeding on outside to be able to generate pressure so one of the things they're going to be looking forward tonight but Monday had a good play on that last one as you mentioned and know negating that from a line of scrimmage some transfers mixed in on this defense including Trey Brown who came down from Washington State who followed defensive coordinator Brian Ward the first year defensive coordinator for Arizona State wrapped up and dropped no breaking through Braden Whistler extends it for a couple of yards and turns a negative into a positive as it appeared BJ green had a in the back field well green came shooting off a line of scrimmage they had a little bit of a corner Blitz and it looked like the the Utah Thunderbird suddenly Utah Thunderbirds got mixed up in their blocking assignments Tate Romney helped bring him down the BJ green the Junior from Atlanta the first man there third and seven for southern Utah inside their own 20 for receivers Ethan Bolen Brook motions for the Thunderbirds Arizona State bringing pressure Miller on the roll out throws it in the flat it's caught Bowling Brook and a first down out near the 30 for southern Utah well-designed play results senior to senior first down suu well that's just another example of what Justin Miller can do when he gets outside the pocket they like to roll him out and the sun doubles are actually bringing a blitz one more than the Thunderbirds could protect but they had a blown coverage in the secondary gave up the first down so Bowling Brook who last year 30 catches was the leading receiver for southern Utah a couple of years ago and he'll get 13 yds on that third down conversion from the 31 Bunch formation out to the left for Justin Miller on the ground BR Whistler the ball carrier who began his college career at Utah but never played for the youths then transferred to Southern Utah no game yeah Clayton Smith ran that down from behind but there's some notable additions on the defense from the from the portal including Clayton Smith that made the play on that last tackle there but Smith Trey Brown Tristan Monday already said his name to Shawn mallerie in the middle transfer from Michigan State so Arizona State active in the portal is well if you're not active in the portal you're missing out yes you're behind day and AG exactly second and 10 after no game Whistler flips to the other side of Justin Miller looking to throw on second down good protection lobs it to the outside and it's tipped Jordan Clark got a hand on it and broke the pass up nice effort from Clark hustling out there the senior from Baton Rouge yeah Roxy Clark did a great job at undercutting the route once he saw what the receivers was destined to do he undercut it got his eyes up to where the ball was coming in and got that hand up to knock it down almost came up with an interception and a good read on it from Jordan Clark of course you probably know his dad Ryan Clark played for the Steelers 13 years in the NFL won a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh heard of the guy yeah you know third and 10 for southern Utah from the Thunderbirds 31 Bowling Brook circles in motion and the drop play in Arizona State Smothers it great Pursuit up the middle well they know the Thunderbirds like to run a lot of RP o action and what they have done is they've stuffed up those A and B gaps giving the Thunderbirds absolutely nowhere to go and this is a thump this is a power play watch that helmet go back and him fall backwards good Pursuit by the defense Deshawn mallerie the transfer from Michigan State the grad transfer with the tackle forcing Southern Utah to punt Elias vigil well punt back to return for Arizona state is melquan stoval standing at the Arizona State 30 now the roll out P vigil shakes it over near the sideline and hedged in over there and stovall's pushed out shy the 35 yd line Arizona State going to work and offense we'll get a look at Jaden rashada coming up beautiful look tempy Town Lake Southern Utah Arizona State one first down at a punt Arizona State ball in our first look at the true freshman Jaden Rashad a quarterback the second true freshman to start an opener for Arizona state with Jaden Daniels being the other who also wor number five happy birthday 20th birthday for Jaden rashada and a quick hit to the outside on the screen and spitting it back in is Cam scabo the transfer from sa State and he gets about three on that quick hit and I have to imagine they're going to do a lot of these quick hits to find a rhythm early so they can get Rashad feeling comfortable well back in the day it used to be screens and stuff like that short hitches that you do but now the tunnel screens and bubble screens to get your quarter quarterback acclimated to the time of the game cut back by scat breaks a tackle runs for a first down out across the 45 terrific second effort by scabo the Big Sky offensive player of the year last year for Troy Taylor in Sacramento State and he's not a very big guy listed at 510 you know 225 lbs but he's got great balance and a great center of gravity the new offensive coordinator bu Baldwin told me something interesting yesterday about scabo and very high praise for his running back we coached against by the way his b was the head coach at calp last year pass underneath they get it to Jaylen Conor Crossing into Southern Utah territory a gain of eight but B bald went telling me yesterday about scabo he's got the most unbalanced lower half that maybe he's ever coached and he put it on par with Cooper Cup who he coached at Eastern Washington very high praise very high praise second down and two for the sundevils at the southern Utah 45 on the roll out rashada has time launches downfield and he completes the pass down to the 10 melin stoval the catch and as we see the sunnd Devils try to get on the ball quickly there's penalty Flags in the back can't run too fast Flags right where rashada threw the football I think that's going to be a late hit we get to say good evening to cron bar Barrett our referee personal foul roughing the passer Defense number six half the distance to the goal automatic first down person a foul on the Gilbert Arizona product the first team whack performer last year Conor cmore who took the shot at rashada nice little scissor route between the receivers stowa comes out the out outside and Rashad did a good job at setting his feet and throwing a little bit back across his body on that deep angle route to his left 33 yds from a shot at a stoal now a jumbo formation for Arizona State first and goal outside the five scabo up the middle breaks a tackle into the end zone touchdown Arizona State and there's that low center of gravity I was referring to Roxy when you watch the young man run because he's 225 lbs he's not going to be an EAS easy low to bring down he might not have the size height-wise but he's got it girth wise and he definitely ran over some guys in this last series so the first offensive possession for both Kenny Dillingham and Jaden Rashad at Arizona State results in six and a rushing score 6yd touchdown for cam scabo and now for the extra point for the sundevils is Dario longto who was 31 for 32 on his point Afters last year kicking for Justin Wilcox up at Cal Josh Carlson the punter is the holder as long ghetto Nails the extra point in a terrific start for Kenny dillingham's Arizona State sundevils they move down the field 68 yds in five plays and I love it when you're running downhill scabo does all all that gets through the hole and the rest is on his own hits his head on the goal post touchdown sunds the pregame is live from Oregan getting you set for a full day of Football Saturday at 11:30 on Pack 12 Network why is a well certainly an impressive opening drive Arizona State goes down the field five plays 68 yds you less than two minutes in Cam scabo finds the end zone last year the Big Sky offensive player of the year put up great numbers for the Hornets at sack State look at those allpurpose yards means shows he's not just back caring the football out of the back field but can catch out of the back field and do other things for your team nice little average there s and a half yards per Rush the impressive number for scabo last year he had a first down or a touchdown on 40% of his touches wow last year very impressive so quick strike from the sundevils now Dario longto will kick off and a seven nothing lead for ASU and ball gets knocked off the T it'll be reset by [Applause] longto and coming down here Charlie regles the special teams coach assistant head coach for Arizona State he used to coach the special teams at Cal a few years ago before he went on to become the head coach at Idaho State as that one blasted through the back of the End Zone by longto and'll come out to the 25 for southern Utah probably a good thing the last time they tried to bring it out they got squashed just around the 12 13 yd line had trouble getting out from its own in zone see what Justin Miller and this offense can do today or do now good start for Arizona State on both sides of the football and as a new coach how critical in an opening game to just get off to a good start so everybody's feeling good about the way things are going well you want to send a message and of course for you for Coach the fact that they were able to have balance and run and pass was a good sign for their offense trying to fly sweep and Arizona state was ready for it trying to get to the edge and that was read beautifully by Demetrius Ford off the edge the transfer from Youngstown State and began his college career at Austin P if you look at the way this play starts you think that because Southern Utah had a few white shirts out their perimeter they might be able to block them up but you can't you can't question desire and that time Ford was able to break his block break through his block and get a nice solid tackle at the line of scrimmage second Team all whack performer Isaiah wooden the carry in the fly sweep for a loss of one second and 11 for southern Utah they'll go old school in terms of they will huddle between plays empty backfield for Miller out of the pocket and he dumps it off it's complete to Francisco Calderone the tight end is brought down a couple of yards shy the first down Tate Romney on the tackle for Arizona State the transfer from BYU you look at the play here he just a SE old the man coverage man beater linebacker drifts inside cuz he thinks Miller's going to run leaves his responsibility unattended Miller finds him and as that's what I talk about when I say Roxy plays with their legs extending plays with their legs the ability to do that Grady Robinson comes on in a quarterback now for southern Utah third and two he's more the runner between these two quarterbacks so give some versatility to the southern Utah offense and first year offensive coordinator Tai Hyatt and breaking tackles Target Lamson runs for a first down for southern Utah out near the 40 yd line boy Lamson had to work to get those three yards for that first down he got made contact right to the line of scrimmage as I said Sun doubles are going to doing a good job at pressing the gaps and really making things hard for this Thunderbird offense and get things moving downhill quickly Lamson last year at JC allam at snow Junior College from the 39 first down Southern Utah inside seven minutes to go in this first quarter two tight ends pistol look and motioning as Isaiah wooden for the Thunderbirds bre can tackle stepping through the line Lamson again the ball carrier out across the 40 gets about four so the sundevils defensively last year and look a lot did not go right for Arizona State last year there was the early season coaching change but these were the numbers defensively for Arizona State they struggled getting off the field on third down mightily that's something that's got to get better if you're going to have a winning product absolutely when you give up that much you know 49% of third Downs are converted it's really hard to be successful that was the second worst only Colorado had a worse third down percentage in the conference play action for Miller steps up to avoid the rush and he gets hauled down from behind BJ green hustling to get after the quarterback that will be a Oney gain now they're going to call it no gain still to 43 so it's third down for southern Utah look at green at the top of your screen he's fighting through two receivers a running back and a tight end and still has a wherewithal to chase down Miller from behind before he gets a big game there's nobody I mean if green doesn't bring him down Miller's got a lot of room to run Miller who's third in southern Utah history in passing yards and touchdowns third and six for the Thunderbirds Arizona State showing pressure and the screen set up and trying to skip it to the outside but ready for it Arizona State swarms as Demetrius for again off the edge for the sundevils you know there's only been a few plays so far in this first quarter Roxy where the defense of the sundevils has not brought pressure that last time they decide to back up and play coverage and one of the things I can appreciate about them especially early in the season their secondary is tackling in the perimeter tackle tackling out why something they struggled with last year Hunting Unit on for the second time and vigil for southern Utah still ball back to return for Arizona State standing at the Sundale 20 biting his time and then launching a vigil a much better pump this time stoval with a fair catch backpedaling inside the 20yd line where Arizona state will go to work 436 to go first quarter Arizona State the early lead at home the defense Demetrius Ford stepping up for the Sun Devils Arizona State up 7 nothing just over 4 and 1/2 minutes to go in this opening quarter of the season for the sundevils and as you're probably aware the news that came out early this week that Arizona State informed the NCAA and the Pack 12 that it will self-impose a one-year postseason ban on its football program for this season and for Arizona State it was a rough 24 hours after that announcement and this was the response from one of the team leaders Jaylen coners who tweeted this out urging the fans we need you that we still have a lot to play for season starts on Thursday and Kenny Dillingham gave the sun doubles about 24-hour period grace period if you will as the down the line screen set up bouncing into the outside and Xavier gillery the transfer from Idaho State out near the 20 but he gave him 24 hours to sulk to be frustrated but then to turn the page and move on Kenny dillingham's message was the same the fan base Turn the Page and move on they had a self admittedly a terrible practice the day of the announcement the next day they had a great practice and the attitude everything has been terrific since picking his way up the middle and to Carlos Brooks with his first Carry in an Arizona State uniform well Roxy you transfer from Cal we do enough of these games to know that you know there's no preseason for college football you go right into your season and you don't have any exhibition games this is considered an exhibition game by many circumstances playing A Wack team that you should control the the last time they played him was 2021 I think they beat him 41 to4 so it's it's a game that people are expecting to win the players need to expect that it's New Era and the pass out of the flat incomplete trying to get a quick hitter to the outside in southern Utah a good read on that for Rado yeah Lockett Smith made a tremendous read breaking up the pass being blocked there's been a few offensive plays the throwing the ball down field there's been some pick plays some screens to try to get your guys free to help build confidence for your Young quarterback which is smart the highly recruited Rashad originally committed to Florida and then changed his mind and came to Arizona State where his dad played back in the early 90s and now he'll try to take off and run Ling forward as Julian sanderlin the defensive end right there throws his hands up letting everybody know he made the play well it's also a fact the quarterback doesn't want to give up a sack you tackle behind the line of scrimmage consider it back tackled at the line of scrimm it's just no no game for a run so helps your offensive lineman out which are important you know you want to make them look good too I know you understand that when I'm working with an offensive lineman absolutely you bet I do third and 10 for Rashad three receivers for Arizona state from the pocket fires over the middle and it's incomplete tried to squeeze that one into Jaylen conards as defensively George Ramirez there for southern Utah and now the pting unit will head out for the first time for Arizona State well I appreciate Rashad trying to take a shot but it's very dangerous grounds you talk about how many white shirts you see in the replay that were around the intended receiver playing it looked like a little bit of a cover one a linebacker drops in the center part of the Zone everyone else is playing man under with a free safety Ramirez the local kid he's from Mesa okay which is something that you're very familiar y right down the show right down the road right down that way Ethan Bowling Brook to return the punt Josh Carlson transfer from New Mexico state will launch it away and the senior from Gilbert Bowling Brook calling for a fair Catch and he lost the football it's loose right near the 40 yd line it appears Southern Utah got it back and jumping on it for southern Utah was Connor cmore who already had a personal foul that opening drive for southern Utah but he's Johnny on the spot right there now you usually tell your guys Peter Peter get away from the football get away from football that could have been detrimental for the Thunderbirds luckily they were able to recover it Southern Utah ball at the 38 yd line 248 to go in this first quarter so luckily for southern Utah they do not turn it over which the turnover battle both coaches telling us how critical it is tonight and this is the best starting position that's something Utah has had so far tonight and Robinson at quarterback the draw penalty marker is down as Robinson Runs Out across Midfield took a shot but there's a penalty marker down in the area of holding yep good call Roxy holding offense number 78 10yd penalty first down the center Edward Riley called for holding you know what's always difficult with these quarterback draws is you have no understanding where the ball is or where the quarterback is doesn't always run up the same Gap every time so when you get your hands on a guy you're more inclined to try to hold on to him even when he tries to break away you know it's a good call it's the right call it's unfortunate first and 20 for southern Utah now Justin Miller returns at quarterback and when we had Southern Utah against Utah last year Lincoln we saw a lot of this quarterback shuffling yes and trying to fight through a tackle but not much there for Braden Whistler gets a yard before he's brought down BJ green who's been active in this first quarter for Arizona State and the sun doubles again last year was a tough year they got off to a the slow start Herm Edwards was let go toward the end of September sha aguano took over as the interim coach and even though the record wasn't great for Arizona State they finished 3-9 they went 2- s in the conference they still played hard for sha iguano the entire season and he was in the conversation become the head coach in Arizona State and get that interim removed he did not get the job but Kenny Dillingham thought enough of sha iguana who's had a relationship with him for a long time kept him on his staff here at Arizona State a nice completion as Justin Miller finds the red shirt freshman Zack Mitchell out near the 45 for southern Utah brings up a manageable third down well head coach is supposed to be a motivator not only a manager but a motivator and when you're talking about these young men in college today that's what you expect and there's iguana right there you know you you expect him to be a motivator you expect him to get everyone fired up to keep him into it there is sha iguano who was coaching the running backs under Herm Edwards and returns to that role here as Kenny Dillingham kept him on staff and now there is some confusion and we have a stoppage before third and four for southern Utah and there is Delane Fitzgerald the head coach the previous play is under review for potential guys so our first potential targeting of this season as that's what the officials will be looking at here so Delane Fitzgerald in his second year and Southern Utah switching conferences again this year as that's what they're looking at right there off the edge did Clayton Smith is that targeting on the transfer from Oklahoma usually when you have that helmet to helmet contact up high it is considered targeting I was surprised there wasn't a penalty as far as roughing the passers thrown and did he lead with the crown of the helmet looks like it and again if that's a targeting call and that's what they were checking out here if it's a targeting on Clayton Smith that means he's disqualified for the rest of the game right and it's a personal foul 15 yards keep in mind speaking of disqualified for the first half tonight Arizona State without two key players Elijah Badger one of their leading receivers in fact under will mention all Pack 12 last year for Badger and also one of their top linebackers will schaer they are out for the first half they will play in the second half that stems from a disqualification in their territorial Cup game against Arizona late in the game last year and they are suspended for the first half of the first game week one game here against Southern Utah well it'll be a valuable lesson for the young red shirt sophomore clayon Smith to learn if he's U and it looks like the from his body language he's probably done for the evening yeah he doesn't like what he's hearing from our officiating crew and judging by his reaction he knows what's going on yeah and there's Kenny Dillingham talking to him and talking to Kenny yesterday look he's he says look I'm animated I'm passionate but I'm not going to get all over my guys personal fou targeting Defense number three 15yd penalty automatic first down number three has been disqualified so Clay Smith disqualified for the rest of the night and but just to finish the thought on Kenny Dillingham he's not going to be one of those guys that's in their face they have an error a hustle error he can live with that now you got to learn from this mistake also is what he said but what Kenny Dillingham said the only time he'll get really emotional you see him maybe get charged up at a player m is if the effort isn't there that's what he wants to see is effort and on first down Braden Whistler the ball carrier inside the 40 and we're inside the final minute of this opening quarter well so far in the first quarter it's been a pressure package out of the sundevils defense I there's only been a few times where they only rushed four everyone else has brought five or brought a corner crash guy coming from the outside they're trying to create more pressure on a Thunderbirds offense give them one more than they could possibly block or they account for in their box because it's a new style of defense for them by the way it was 104 degrees a kickoff and Kenny dillingham's wearing a sweatshirt he was wearing a suit when you did your interview with that's true second and eight for the Thunderbirds [Music] Justin Miller to the outside it's caught Zack Mitchell a second catch and he runs out right near the first down the ball went out of bounds but he didn't have it so I by beyond the first down marker so so going to be a third down short for the Thunderbirds that should take us to the end of the opening quarter and the debut for Kenny Dillingham as the Arizona State Sund doubles head coach it'll be a third and short for Southern Utah as we flip the field and head to quarter number two cam scabo a 6-y rushing touchdown the only score and Arizona State the Sund doubles a seven nothing lead on Southern Utah after one second quarter Straight Ahead from Mountain America Stadium well it's a great night at Mountain America stadi Stadium home of the ASU Sun doubles Mountain America Credit Union has been giving back to the community for over 95 years in this historic naming riots deal there's an example of that the partnership will provide support to the community and the student athletes in a variety of ways $250 will be donated to the sundevil club for every field goal made brand new shoes will be provided to community members in need each year $20,000 in scholarship will be awarded to men and women ASU student athletes internships special Financial education programs will be available to the ASU student athletes Mountain America Stadium now here in temp you know rocks have lived here for 17 years and I and even as a from a Collegiate guy playing here to a pro playing in the stadium I it's marvelous and wonderful to see how the stadium has grown over the years and you commented the playing surface here beautiful is as good as there is absolutely absolutely one of the best grass fields ever ever had the pleasure playing on Third and short for southern Utah to open the second bouncing into the outside and running for a first down Southern Utah and sneaking in there and pushing him out of bounds Chris Edmonds trying to jump up on the play that's a first down run for southern Utah there was a linebacker down there will schaer lost contained it's one of the reasons why the Thunderbirds are able to get outside on the perimeter haven't had a whole lot of Luck running outside Suns did an awfully good job at clogging up those gaps taking away those runs so Jordan Jefferson runs for the first down pistol look Miller that's a backward pass ranging all the way to the Arizona State sideline and throwing it down field that is the backup quarterback Grady Robinson completing the pass to Justin Miller Miller go get open usually quarterbacks try to block out of those instances but that time Miller was smart when he saw he saw the roll out coming back in his way he did what he tells his receivers to do go downfield and find a open spot and a good strike from Robinson to Miller so the backup quarterback finds the starting quarterback and a first down to the Arizona State 12 just like we drew it up Justin Miller's Five for six through the air so so [Music] [Applause] far in motion goes Ethan Bowling Brook for the Thunderbirds in the handoff up the middle and knocked down after a gain of two is Braden Whistler runs right into the Arizona State Defense and run runs into Chris Edmonds one of the top tacklers on this Arizona State Defense a year ago have you noticed how hard the defense is hitting tonight for the Sun Devils I mean they are really smacking around the Thunderbirds when they get a chance to really really bringing it after him that's that's a good sign that's a good start especially coming out of camp and starting the season you want to see that energy and we saw that from Brian Ward's defenses last year at Washington State correct Trey Brown coming down from Pullman to Tempe with Brian Ward and on second down the fly sweep and Isaiah wooden to the outside and wooden diving for the pylon is the in Waiting for a signal he did not get the end zone didn't get the first down either Out of Bounds at the three on that fly Sweep with Isaiah wooden now of course this is four down territory you're going to probably go for it being this close you want to send you want to send a message if you're the Thunderbirds you want to send a message there we can go pound-for-pound for you yes you took the early lead but now we got some momentum in the favor after the personal foul targeting call got him an automatic first down move past Midfield they're trying to make the best of their touchdown on the board which is good for your confidence but now you've allowed a team that you should be owning at this particular point of the game back into it so now you need to take control when will happen as the game goes on sundevil have to get back to what that that intensity they had in the first quarter they came out sharp on that opening drive and they stalled the last couple now the that's to Carlos Brooks with the effort for a first down across Midfield Javon Lewis the transfer from pit makes the tackle the first catch forward to Carlos Brooks and a first down into Southern Utah territory now we're seeing the sundevil offense sort of get to moving after the number of troubles they had and way they sort of staggered before these the series before this one sundevils go empty again rashada Under Pressure hit and dropped in the back field came right off the edge from Ani purcel and the red shirt freshman with the sack he played a handful of games last year before taking a red shirt and he came right off the edge around EMT buing yeah rash didn't see that one he was looking over to his left so that in essence became his Blind Side took a wallup is that one of those secondary wise that maybe he thinks Rashad might not have seen and he's going to throw a lot of looks at the true freshman absolutely and here he is stacking the line showing pressure rashada on the roll out it's behind scabo it was there and rashada probably had a little bit more time to complete the pass than he thought and he put it behind scaboo slipping out well I I can think that he had wanted somebody was running down the field in Middle the field with a safety not not in the box but he didn't have time to force it to look at it and of course listen this is the young lessons by this Young quarterback Les has learned that was an allout Blitz from delaye Fitzgerald in southern Utah now on fourth down rolling out they going for it rashada launching downfield looking for the end zone and it's caught touchdown Xavier Giller on Fourth and eight 47 yds and a touchdown for izona State and the first touchdown pass for Jaden rashada of his college career well it might have been Gill he was running down the middle of field fre they did a very similar play this time Rashad stopped set his feet and threw it up for a where only receiver could get it and how about that call on fourth yeah you I mean it is gutsy you're but you're obviously taking a chance something that you believe in and maybe the guys upstairs saw that there was a wide open post on that last play When the the Thunderbirds blitzed and decided to take another shot and that could very well be a game-changing call without a doubt right there without a doubt longto will kick off and he sends this one to the his college career at Austin P and last year was the third highest graded corner at the FCS level with a fine play Ford played that exceptionally well and you see the refs letting a play getting away with a little contact but forward was stri to strive with the receiver and went up and knocked down the football great third down play to get off the football field good job by the defense pting unit out for delaye Fitzgerald and Milan Stovall the return man standing at the Arizona State 20 and [Applause] possibly a delay game since the back judge through the flag well they call timeout in time sou Utah did so delaye Fitzgerald avoids the 5yd penalty and we mentioned again Southern Utah going to their third conference in three years delaye Fitzgerald used bouncing around timeout Southern Utah First of the timeout at Southern Utah but for Delane Fitzgerald he was the coach at Frostburg State and that is the affiliation for conferences where Southern Utah has been but for delaye Fitzgerald he was at three different conferences at Frostburg State prior to that he was at Southern Virginia where they were in three conferences in 5 years so playing at a new conference is nothing new for Delane Fitzgerald all right where are we going where we playing who who we going to go up against but to go back to your conversation about coach and the portals and the relationships I think it's essential to think about if you it's almost like a recruiting tool if you have a coach who's familiar with a stud player who might be available in the portal to maybe have some sort of end to maybe bring them down with you and that that that's a reward for this Arizona State sundevil program avoiding the delay of game Vil standing inside the 25 will punt it away for the Thunderbirds in the roll out Punt and stoval lets it bounce and it takes another southern Utah bound second time vigils had that go his way and the Thunderbirds down it inside the asu2 with 256 left in the half sundevils have all three timeouts Southern Utah just burning one they have two remaining and Kenny Dillingham the youngest coach in the country the Arizona State grad and now head coach 33 and we'll see Dan Lanning who is the fifth youngest head coach in the country on Saturday when Oregon hosts Portland State [Music] yeah there is Kenny Dillingham who was the OC for the ducks in Dan Landing last year at Oregon and the bubble screen to the outside cutting it back nice move and turning it up field and jayen Conor still going Conor's chopped down inside the 40 in southern Utah that he lost the football and the officials say no he was down and Conor's clutching his left shoulder yeah he took a shot came down awkwardly took a shot undercut but came down awkwardly and the ground indeed caused the ball to pop free and now he checks out of the lineup as Messiah Swinson replaces him for Arizona state after the huge pickup the screen of 44 yards from rad to Conor cam scabo wiggling his way through the line that was terrific Movement by Conor as he went side to side rather scaboo for the first down scatter remember that balance I was talking about that low center of gravity that's obvious in this last play what he did and how he did it looked like his feet were going one way his body's going another way but he's able to change direction quickly zigzagged right through the line cuts it back and he breaks a tackle keeps going inside the 20 and he is tough to haul down as Tackle by quadir Lockett Smith but it appeared scabo was going to be brought down for no gain he got about three on the play yeah been a lot of that cuts in the hole which you never want a running back to do but when it's effective and you getting positive yards that's what you want for your offense and the new clock rules this year now we're inside the final two minutes where the clock will stop briefly on a first down or when you go out of bounds but the new rules this year which is sped up play fewer plays we've seen so far and it shortened the game a little bit but the new clock rules are that the clock will keep going on a ball out of bounds unless it's the final two minutes of each half and the clock will no longer stop on first downs it'll keep running until the final two minutes of each half and once the ball's reset then the clock gets wound second and eight for the sun doubles inside the 20 rashada underneath it's complete Xavier Giller and he goes inside the 10 first and goal Arizona State and I saw that play in the first quarter it's almost called a clear out where you have the four wide receivers go have all goes with especially with man coverage and then you bring a receiver dragging underneath both times for the sundevils has been wide open Rashad was able to benefit again and getting another first down clock is moving inside a minute first and goal ASU spotted at the seven of Southern Utah and the sundevils have all three timeouts at the disposal of Kenny Dillingham and again his first game as a head coach the organizational stuff the clock management is something he's had some practice at but that's the big thing for him he said now that I'm the head coach of scaboo is brought down for a loss Javon Lewis the pit transfer off the corner with the tackle for loss pushing scabo back at Arizona State outside the 10 surprised they didn't use one of those timeouts after first game as a head coach but I got this that's one of the things that's one of the most difficult things in my opinion for head coaches to learn how to manage the small things and not get we've only got 18 seconds left not only the debut for Dillingham but Jaden rashada the true freshman starting quarterback here is his night so far and so far it's been pretty good I mean he's shown some good patience look at the Deep scissors out this is what I'm referring to these are man beaters when you're playing the defense that the Thunderbirds are playing which is equivalent of uh one or three then you have a deep safety in the hole he can't be right with that scissors round then on the ends of a rough into the pass so they get automatic first down keep a drive going big play shot a 10 for 14 174 yds in a touchdown and he has his first career touchdown pass to Xavier gillery on that fourth and eight from the southern Utah 47 and now they have a second in goal outside the 10 and they'll run it to Carlos Brooks skipping to the outside and he's brought down for a loss and again it's Javon Lewis the corner for southern Utah yeah I think Souther Utah was waiting for that because they didn't have unlike what they started most of their series they didn't have a deep safety in the hole he was actually in the Box almost as a third linebacker which brought another body up close to the line of scrimmage time out with 11 seconds left in the half and now you see the wind kicking up dust storm yeah and a little bit of a dust storm here in temp P at Mountain America Stadium welcome extra point from an angle from and your quarterback has a I mean not your quarterback your kicker has a strong leg so you know that going in yeah we saw longto make a 54 yd field goal in the big game against Stanford last year a career long for the grad transfer from Cal this one's coming down but we have the sandstorm that's going on right now speaking of that 54 y for long ghetto here it was he was only upstage final play of the game by Josh mccardy who made a 60- y for Stanford which was the longest field goal ever made in that rivalry and that took it from a 10 to a seven-point game Cal 5 seconds left in the half I mean from here I'm trying to look and I think I'm honestly having difficulty seeing the other side of the stadium here yeah yeah that's exactly way it could breaks [Music] decides to do and they find the corner of the end zone touchdown Arizona State that's exactly what I expected the Young quarterback sees one1 coverage what a safety in the hole you throw that fade with that second one that defin definitely with that first one in he's then right now you only need one foot in college football so omir played four games at Texas last year now we'll get to see delay getting ready to resume football at Mountain America Stadium the season opener for Arizona State and Southern Utah here tonight into morning with Lincoln Kennedy Roxy burnsy with you I know everybody's familiar with Pack 12 after dark well welcome to pack 12 after midnight because this game is not going to get done probably till about 1:00 in the morning and thankfully we have the new clock rules in college football this year that will help us a little bit but a lengthy delay we're ready for more football yeah a lengthy delay and you thought nothing happens in fun in the desert right it's been an interesting night to say the least but you know what the biggest concern that I have especially for both these teams is the the the long wait of when you're sitting in the locker room having to come back out and try to turn it on that's sometimes when injuries can happen you have guys pull up and I'm hoping for their their sake nothing happens because it was a long delay and I'm hoping the coaches were able to do a little bit of management in the locker room but we'll see 217 Arizona State this game is tied at seven and early in the ball game Arizona State in their first drive and a big play from Jade marad set up the first score a big play when you when you talk about jayen Rashad getting out of the pocket throwing back across his body to long to a long throw and S them up first and goal where scouto does the rest with his legs good job by the a state offense on that first drive then Southern Utah tied the game on a rushing touchdown to make it 77 then Jaden Rashad this was the play of the first half fourth and eight at the southern Utah 47 yd line 47 yd touchdown pass to Xavier gillary and it was a big time throw and a big time catch and it really boosted the confidence of that young man and just to the overall offense they dominated the first half nice little back shoulder throw to the back of the end zone back pylon Good Touch by Rashad and a good offensive series by the Sun Devils and Rashad was somehow able to find omir there in the corner while the dust storm was going on where we could barely even see the field that's how thick it was from up here here's our game summary and again the delay for just over two and 1 half hours the numbers on Jaden rashada but what else stands out to you about the Freshman quarterback for ASU just his overall patience and sort of maturity that he showed in that first half having you know first time you're playing in a in college football in a big- Time college football program you want all the world is watching you we've got the TV on you first game you want to go out and have a good outing he took some shots there were a couple late hits that uh the southern Utah suffered but he took some shots he kept getting back up and kept standing and kept doing his job as you can see it's still raining and it's an intimate Gathering as this evening has progress and some of them are braving the elements the ones that have stayed there's a nice Gathering of fans behind the Arizona State sideline at the bench and there's some fans hanging out under the overhang and getting a roof over their head and these are the brave souls that have stuck it out after 2 and 1/2 hours we have football again Arizona state will receive the second half kickoff and getting an early touch as Elijah Badger is back to return the kickoff and he was not available for Kenny Dillingham in the first half as badger on the return at the 15 and he's trying to rustle free at the 20 yd line before he's driven backward as now Badger and will schaer will be eligible to play for Arizona State they were serving a suspension for the first half dating back to the end of the territorial Cup against Arizona at the end of last season with their disqualification against their Rivals but now Jaden rashada will have one of the Premier Targets in the Pack 12 available at receiver and at 21-7 lead for the sundevils from Their Own 20yd Line Rashad at 12 for 16 182 yds and a couple of touchdowns so far and first down rashada the Freshman steps up penalty markers down in the ASU backfield as Rashad will step out of bounds shy the first down but we will check the penalty flag in the area of holding you know Ro say they ran this play uh very similar in the first half with their receivers there as Z receivers Badger came in a little bit of a clear out by the other receivers holding offense number 73 10 yard penalty first down Badger runs underneath and was supposed to come under but Rashad felt the pressure and decid to use his legs penalties have been an issue for Arizona State and that's the penalty yardage per game the last couple of years which Kenny Dillingham is trying to clean up and not back 10 yards you pick up 12 on an inside run most of it was done with his legs pushing the peld forward and a resp spotting of the football so for 2 and 1/2 hours you're sitting in the locker room you were talking about a Lincoln before you had a three-hour delay when you're playing a game in Minnesota what did you guys do in the locker room just to try to stay sharp try to do whatever you can to occupy yourself some guys listen to music some guys you know watch some film or whatever it is in the Playbook but you're trying to do anything to pass time and it seems like time creeps even slower during those instances Roxy another run for Camp scabo up the middle and he pushes forward across the 25 to bring up third to about four for Arizona state mean it's not like you know rain delays in baseball guys are eating hot dogs getting pizza popcorn you're not doing that in in a football up don't have don't have the opportunity to do it unless you send a rookie out who's not playing make a make a and the other problem is I granted I'm sure they were getting some nourishment in there but everything is regimented schedule-wise right and teams will eat their pregame meals 4 hours before kickoff at least well now all of a sudden you throw a 2 and 1 half hour lightning delay in so it throws everything off and your body clock off and the quick hit to the outside it's broken up incomplete trying to squeeze it into Bryce Pierre tight end and it is fourth down for Arizona State as rashada just could not connect with Pierre well George Ramirez the safety for sou Utah was a was lucky that that did escape the wouldbe receiver for the sundevils because there was nobody behind him if the ball was caught you're going to gamble make sure you come up with the ball or knock it down Josh Carlson on the punt for Arizona State just two minutes into this second half and the roll out punt end overend Ethan Bowling Brook calling for a fair Catch and he makes it right near the 35 yd line in southern Utah will have the football 217 Arizona [Music] States Southern Utah about to get the football 217 Arizona State leading the Thunderbirds and ESU will take over at their own 37 get a little pep talk from Delan Fitzgerald and his staff as the seconde coach of Southern Utah after the lengthy delay and the Thunderbirds look we didn't come all the way down from Cedar City just to walk away at halftime we want to play some football Justin Miller a quarterback and the handoff to Braden Whistler and he is brought down after a gain of one DeShawn mallerie in on the tackle along with Tristan Monday for ASU yeah Monday's having a pretty good game called his name out a couple of times to I can't remember the first half I don't know how he did in distant memory of look back at your notes he my memory doesn't go back that far he was one of the transfer portal guys so gain of one second and nine a Justin Miller 5 for eight 38 yds through the air for the veteran quarterback First Team all whack last year throwing for nearly 3,000 yards completing 65% of his passes and he throws incomplete on the slant to Ethan Bowling Brook and it's third down both broke had a good case guessing they were watching first half film and breaking it down that's my guess wow yes that deep huh I I I'm going there obviously Braden Whistler as Thunderbirds inside Arizona State territory and much like the first half Arizona State still not giving up a lot of room between the tackles there hasn't been a lot of Running Room between the tackles for southern Utah their offense has worked out in spurts they've had a couple big plays obviously in order to get their seven but for the most part the Sun Devils defense has been pretty impressive tonight will schaer in on that tackle again he was suspended for the first half and the Junior from temp a former walk- on so we've seen Badger get a quick touch on the kickoff but now schaer getting involved and two players that are now available to Kenny Dillingham second and nine and and sweeping it to the outside and stumbling forward not much there again it's Whistler with the carry and a good effort from Caleb McCulla linebacker for the right near the 10 yd line and in Arizona State football the sundevils are backed up but a 14-point lead lengthy delay football is back it's the final game folks this so the Kenny Dillingham story with Arizona state began a long time ago when here is a student graduated from ASU met his wife here there is his wife Ranna is a cheerleader for Arizona State graduation and now the game face from the from the baby baby's ready ready to take the practice field dad just give me the rock dad I can make it happen and there is Kenny Dillingham 33 years of age the youngest coach in the country and the first Arizona State Alum take over the range of the football program and in his debut they lead Southern Utah 217 and the handoff and skipping it to the outside D Carlos Brooks is run out of bounds near the 30 and a good chunk play for ASU nice chunk play as you mentioned Roxy because Southern Utah brought an outside crush crash Blitz look at the Block right there by big number 71 and as you talk about walking down the field pulle makua did a good job at springing him to get on the outside nice big chunk of yards to start this series at the 28 for the Sun Devils Rashad on first down again it's Brooks spinning out of a tackle then he's cleaned up after a gain of one jumping up Cody Coleman from the secondary for southern Utah looks like a state wants to show a little bit of a Tempo with the sugar huddle the sugar huddle is just when your offensive line is close to the line your Center is barking out calls after the quarterback gives the initial either protection or play and since it's empty it's going to be a pass empty back field for Jaden rashada second down and nine pressure coming the screen set up and rustled down behind the line is Elijah Badger and all over that play Southern Utah's defense Julian sanderlin getting out there for the Thunderbirds helping break up that play with George Ramirez yeah well initially you know they were the Southern Utah had a little bit of a corner nickel Blitz coming off of that side they tried to get the ball to Badger's hand in a little bit of a tunnel screen but sou Utah was waiting for it loss of four yds back to the 25 third and 13 for Arizona State rashada stepping up to a for The Rush now launches downfield and way over the head of the intended target trying to get it trying to get a big play trying to you know stretch the ball downfield maybe take a shot there's nothing wrong with that but you don't want to put the ball In Harm's Way You Want To Live sometimes punting is a good thing you just don't want to give a little off to a sluggish start after that lengthy delay it's to be expected offensively it's to be expected so the hometown hero came to his first game an upset of number one Nebraska when Dillingham was six back in 1996 graduated from ASU The Bachelor of inter disciplinary studies business and Communications in 2013 worked at Arizona State right after graduating for Todd Graham bounced around as an offensive coordinator the last number of years he was at Oregon last year he's been at Auburn as well as working at Florida State and Memphis and now the youngest head coach in the country Southern Utah with the ball their own 38 as Justin Miller from the pocket penalty marker is down completing a pass to the outside this one's coming back as well Isaiah W in the catch but we will check the penalty holding offense number 73 10yd penalty first down left tackle Colin Gardner called for the infraction he watching at the bottom of your screen yeah you get that hook out there that's that's they're going to call that every time that arm bar gets across the chin it's a big time hold BJ green has been a problem for southern Utah tonight and he caused that hold committed by Garder Southern Utah they've lost 13 straight games against FBS competition last time they beat an FBS team you got to go back to 2013 they won at South Alabama and picking his way up the middle not much there for targi Lamson who had the touchdown of the first half for southern Utah as we flash back this was couple of years ago when Arizona State thumped Southern Utah a season opener right here oh that's putting it mildly thump wasn't it was just an Abomination they obliterated something Utah took all their chances early and often a big night for Daren Butler had a couple of interceptions that night for the Arizona State [Applause] Defense second down and really long for the Thunderbirds Miller to the outside it's caught cutting it back as Zach Mitchell breaks a tackle heads down the sideline the red shirt freshman Mitchell hauled down from behind inside the five it'll be first and goal as Demetrius Ford the touchdown saving tackle for Arizona State I think there's some Sun Devils out there that might have a little bit of a bicker because a little comeback on after he caught the ball and was on way scattering being chased but watch The Catch Roxy and now watch the the comeback block right here that's technically illegal crackback block like that maybe they're going to take a look at it upstairs now for potential taret yeah the previous play is under review for a possible targeting and that's what we're getting so they will review to see if there was targeting there that could wipe out this play and a huge completion of 68 yards from Miller and it was Clark to Mitchell it was Clark that was suffered that little crackback block I don't know if he used his helmet but his shoulder pad did go up high o Clark so Kenny Dillingham talking a couple of our officials over on the ASU sideline the ruling on the field was a 68 yd pass but they are checking for potential targeting call right there on the Block coming over good job by Ford running down not giv up on Mitchell when he broke away so official review 636 to go here in the third and this would be a huge play if it stands for southern Utah for them to climb right back in it certainly certainly and give them a lot of confidence cuz as you mentioned both offenses kind of start at the second half sputtering of this little big play you know a little simple out route that turns up in to where Mitchell's running free in the secondary and for chasing him from behind could be a big play one one way or the other Southern Utah last time they beat an FBS team we told you it was August of 2013 and they're playing two FBS games this season they have BYU next week and yeah they're already backing up Southern Utah's already backing up like they know it's going to be aeny on them so this would wipe out the huge play for southern Utah and also they would lose the player if it is deemed targeting correct and not only they lose the player for the remainder of this game because it happened in the second half he will have to sit for the first half of the game next week in Provo against BYU so that is the play that is being being looked at right into your picture now and there does seem to be forcible contact to the Head yes it is up high against a defens a defenseless player and that's Ethan Bowling Brook who is one of the big weapons for southern Utah as far as the production he gives them he's their Return Man on punts we've seen him lined up all over the field a couple of big catches for him in this one that would be a significant loss not for the remainder just for the remain this game but then the first half against BYU next week which is a big big task for them as well and it would wipe out the 68 yd play still waiting for official word and Delane Fitzgerald is well both teams have already backed up to Midfield anyway so yeah kind of read the read the tea leaves if you will we saw in the first half of this game for Arizona State Clayton Smith lost for a targeting call Early in this [Applause] one so that means Bowling Brook is disqualified for the remainder of this one should they assess the targeting call which is still being checked out under the hood now the headset is off and we will hear from crayon Barrett after review Target offense number four that penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul second down now he did not say that Bowling Brook is disqualified but we will tell you that Bowling Brook is disqualified we do know that because of the targeting call and again that causes him to miss the first half next week number four has been disqualify gravon I got you bud yep 21-7 Arizona State so after the penalty it's second down back at the southern Utah 30yd line Second down and 18 in an enormous call and penalty that goes against Southern Utah looking down the sideline incomplete a miscommunication Miller looking for Tim Patrick nice solid coverage that time by Ford running stride for stride with him on the outside but more importantly just taking taking the inside presence away where Mitchell can't turn back around for that third and 18 there is Bowling Brook and getting pick meups from his guys over there third down was a problem for Arizona State's defense last year and getting off the field this is a third and 18 and a draw play targi Lamson and Lamson is rustled down right near the 40 yd line and grabbing on and not letting go for Arizona state was Prince dor by the Texas transfer and it's fourth down you know that penalty just takes all the wind out of your cell I mean you think about it you come back after a long game getting down the goal line building some momentum and the penalty brings you back and now a late switch the pting unit headed out for southern Utah and The Return Man is mwan stoval for Arizona State standing near the 20 and the play clock ran out but that forced Southern Utah to take a time out because they ran their punting team out late and by rule the opposite position is allowed to match the alignment that's exactly right so therefore because they took so much time sending the punting unit out they ran out of time on the play clock forcing them to have to use the timeout here knowing that rule is in place for a reason just that reason so you can't surprise opposing teams I'm surprised that southern Utah even tried that technique that sort of strategy it's a waste now it's a waste of a timeout cuz you know you're puning so there's no surprise yeah but we also assumed that Kenny Dillingham was going to punt in the first half when he had a fourth down and eight at the 47 of Southern Utah and he went for it he threw 47 yd touchdown pass that's different cuz that was Midfield this is a little bit more in their territory I don't want to give them up that much elas vigil Junior College academic success here at Arizona State 92% graduation rate and the academic progress rate at 995 highest in the Pack 12 for a second year in a row and how about the female student athletes at Arizona State accumulative 3.57 nice GPA 331 overall for student athletes at ASU 41 Pack 12 SC athletes tremendous academic success by the Arizona State student athletes really hard to have you know complain about anything here the weather's perfect at the campus is is is beautiful weather's perfect as you say we're approaching midnight the hey Okay tonight's the exception to the rule we need rain Jaden those timing issues where your Young quarterback is just going to have to learn how his receivers like to run his routes including your tight ends you know when they when everyone runs the an end cut difference or a drag route different so it's working with them especially in game speed you can't duplicate that in practice Isaiah wooden now back to return the punt with Ethan Bowling Brook third it's this one- score game and when I was talking to Delane Fitzgerald over at their hotel yesterday he felt pretty good about his team's chances to be in this game tonight he liked the team the makeup of his team that there I would say Leaps and Bounds ahead of where they were a year ago at this point and the culture that he's established now in his second year at Southern Utah and he's pleased with the progress they've made and he felt pretty good about coming in here against a true freshman quarterback and new coaching staff coach yeah and certainly with the news earlier this week wondering how if there would be a hangover effect from that certainly and here they are he felt that they'd have a chance it be a close game and give themselves an opportunity heading into the fourth quarter and he's doing that no a state is sputtered in the second half offensively Elijah Badger and he's out across the 25 yd line on the return and then he gets back up and he's going the officials did not blow a whistle and Badger goes down the sideline cuts it back at the 25 penalty marker is down there's a lot to sort out here the penalty was he down well there's 30 seconds to go in the third quarter yeah we see a flag on the field but I'm curious was he down no he was sitting on the back of one of the southern Utah players number 25 locket Smith Ron Barrett our referee in communication with his other officials there on the field and we're going to get a review to see if Badger was down I did not hear a whistle there was no signal that he was down yeah there was no signal by any of the refs out there on the field I saw as well and credit to Elijah Badger for knowing hey I don't hear a whistle I'm going to keep going been opportunities in the past when you've seen ball cies roll over on the wouldbe tacklers never touch the ground the elbow never touch the ground knee never touches the ground okay here he is he's on the back is the elbow down there though that's my question I mentioned a moment ago they weren't scared they've been going to to to Toe with sundevils all night long and because they the sundevils left them in in this game you you come up with a big play like that special teams play block punt turn from a score by Ramirez Carlson had no chance because Jordan Washington was coming off the edge and Carlson had a guy right in his face it looked like came in clean and the ball scooped up near Midfield by Ramirez and he took it back for the touchdown one of the reasons why I've never liked that punt formation they they had people running in late and for your Young quarterback and he's the true freshman and what you want him to do is you want him to not only control the Huddle control the temple you you give him some easy throws whether it's some bubble screens or or some short passes stuff like that to Speedy receivers put the ball in the playmaker's hands but just don't make mistakes from the 25 rashada and the screen cam scabo steps through tunnel screen where they get the number the blockers in front taking up the white shirts Badger does the rest with his feet to get the first down they just outnumbered them they did yeah they did they they called a play a nice nice screen call for them inside two minutes at the 44 Rashad surveys the field play clock ticking Down Kenny Dillingham he wanted a timeout and he got it right before the snap with 139 remaining Rado was trying to work the clock I saw it he snapped the ball before it went to zero I thought timeout Arizona State so first and a half 302 timeout so 139 to go 24-21 Arizona state they're trying to put this one away and for the sundevils again Oklahoma State then Fresno State so all three non-conference games here at Mountain America Stadium four consecutive home games to start the season USC then they finally hit the road go to Cal hosts Colorado have the buy and then the schedule gets a little more challenging the second half with Washington Utah Oregon and of course the territorial Cup against Arizona to end it tough schedule nobody's got it easy in the Pack 12 that's exactly right especially this year with five teams in the top 25 all the great quarterbacks in this conference maybe a future star in Rashad hands it off to scabo and he's tripped up and Delane Fitzgerald immediately gets a timeout 134 to go is Conor cmore on the tackle for southern Utah along with Trayvon goar Southern Utah that's their second and a half 30 second timeout Thunderbirds have just that one timeout left and again that timeout that they had to burn with the confusion on the punch game clock is looking really costly right now 135 well you know it's early season for both squads so you still got a lot to learn both coaches have got a lot to learn about their personnel and and the combinations that they have but I thought Fitzgerald missed a huge opportunity after that please reset the G clock after that penalty had stopped the clock and they got backed up and just sto the clock a little bit more give yourself some more time and I will say this you and I had Southern Utah against Utah last yearh and delaye Fitzgerald was adamant yesterday this program is so much further along now than we were a year ago watching them tonight it's very clear that this is a program that's clearly made a huge step forward from a solid year last year they picked up five games an improved season a year ago for southern Utah they have the two FBS games to start the year but this is a team in that new United Athletic Conference they're going to have a chance cam scabo picking his way through brought down shy of the first down and the last time out for the Thunderbirds with 129 remaining and we used to run what we call a four-minute offense where you get a couple of first downs and you'll end the game now if they're able to get to convert this third down short the third and final of game will be over you can take a take a knee run it out sudden Utah has no other way of stopping the clock so essentially Arizona State it'll be third and two here two plays to get two yards to put this game away and Southern Utah needs to find a way to not let them get the first down get the ball back but when they get the ball back there's going to be very little time left if they're able to get a stop yeah that's if they're able to get a stop on this short third down I kind of expect him to throw either a a quick um have scattered run to the flat a quick pass to get the ball out of his hands decisively they're going with the fullback in their their jumo formation they might go to Brooks again with the little fullback give like they did a couple times earlier in the quarter third and two a minute 29 to go no more timeouts for the Thunderbirds rashada under Center and again it is Brooks and he's through the line that should do it runs for a first down a pickup of six yds and that will get Kenny Dillingham a win in his debut as the head coach in Arizona State and that is how you get a chance to see the best formation in football Victory formation so the sundevils turbulent week hold off Southern Utah they'll get this win and for southern Utah I I think they can leave Mountain America Stadium feeling pretty good about themselves in the effort that Delan Fitzgerald got from his squad tonight I totally agree I totally agree with you um you know they had a couple of opport unities where they they didn't come through but still putting up 21 points under these conditions especially going up against the Arizona State think it's a good outing for the for the Thunderbirds and a lightning delay of over 2 and 1 half hours that both teams had to deal with tonight an unorthodox evening and one more snap will do it as Jaden Rashad to a knee and Arizona state will get a win in the debut of Kenny Dillingham as the head coach of the sundevils 2421 over Southern Utah as Delane Fitzgerald's team gave Arizona State all they could handle tonight found a way and they get the win that that's at the end of the day all matter win is a win it doesn't matter if you win by one or 31 that's what matters is the fact that they are able to come away with the win your first game to open up the season your schedule gets tougher after it you read a lot of games you'll take as many win as you can get so the debut is a win for Dillingham Jaden Rashad at
