start with Jeff coach youve talked a lot about competitive stamina and the importance of four quarters in closing games out You' yeah great question and and competitive stamina for us the way we Define it is competing to a standard regardless of the circumstance and uh we knew there was a ton of opportunity uh from a program standpoint uh but that shouldn't be the the main uh motivation for us it's just truly an appreciation to compete and then who cares what the what the circumstances are who cares what the score is at halftime you know if you're trailing or leading in the fourth quarter you know it doesn't matter you want to compete to a standard every time you have an opportunity to to take the field and and hopefully the guys you know are starting to to see the the the fruits of their labor right because they've been working extremely hard that's a group of guys in that in that locker room that believe they believe in each other and they play for For the Love of each other and it was just awesome uh to see those guys have success and and and again you know to be successful at the level that we want to be successful you got to win games in the fourth quarter right I told him at halftime the the least important thing is to score at halftime get the game to the fourth quarter and then go win the game in the fourth quarter and you know what you know they did it and we didn't start the second half you know the way that we wanted to right defense defensively we gave up 10 points right out the gate and then we have a turnover and a three and out so definitely not the way that we uh so so the question is are you going to quit competing or are you going to say you know what regardless of what the circumstance are the next time I have an opportunity to go out there I'm going to work towards the uh the standard to be honest with you I mean it's going to sound like cliche or simple but belief man the guys believed right they believe that we get it to the fourth quarter right we're going to go win the fourth quarter and that's that's really you know what it what it boils down to is man how strong is your belief because if your belief is is strong then your actions will follow suit and so what you saw is you saw guys man putting their their love for their teammates into action and then just spread throughout the uh throughout the team and that's what that's what good football teams do in the fourth quarter they feed off of each other but it starts with uh just an attitude of belief that's right that's right man first of all you know shout out to TM we call him TM got his first career sack you know super excited for him and then you know Malcolm forced the uh the turnover there and and Clary uh recovered it and you know I told him at halftime all right I said I said look this game's going to come down to somebody making a play and you know what it may be somebody that only played one snap in the first half or it could be somebody that that might be your first snap in the game but you got to be ready to make a play and you know both of those guys uh were ready and and they do an unbelievable job of preparing and you know Trey had some some some some great reps uh during fall camp with uh with James being out for a little while and you know it came it came into play uh tonight and and obviously we don't know the extent of Cam Robinson's uh injury he went and got looked at they brought him in they they checked him out he was going to warm up and try to go in the second half I saw him running around and then they shut him down and uh with on the injury note Cory Thomas you know we're still waiting to hear you know kind of something in the uh in the midsection we're going to do some more tests before we uh fully know but uh just being ready right being ready and and preparing like a starter and both of those guys do and I just so happy for them to to have success when their number was called heard on thei you this first time back to oh yeah that's right right I said it was a program win uh because uh uh I got a the utmost respect for for Coach Clawson and uh and I've had a chance over the last three years to get to know him on a more personal level and man he's solid the Earth and then when you when you look at what he's done with the weight Forest program man he's built you know one of the best programs in my opinion in the ACC when you talk about in totality um uh and and so I felt like it was an opportunity to see where we were relative to uh because he's been there you know for a while and he's and he's kind of built the program to where it is so I felt like it was a a program win for that perspective and then the opportunities that we had uh it's one of our team goals right our team go our second team goal is to win the ACC opener and as a staff we hadn't done that prior to prior to tonight uh and then it was an opportunity for for a Virginia team to start 2 and0 that's only happened you know two times other than than this year since 2013 right so there were so many opportunities for us to to kind of take the next step right so that's why I said it was a was a program program win for us Jerry yours push down line yeah um cuz we we had three shots at it early in the in the uh in the first half and we came up short and um you know it was a situation there we were going to go tush push and then if we didn't get it uh regroup run some time off the clock um but but and we were going to do it on one of the fourth Downs when I call timeout um and we were going to do it but then we realized it was a little bit further than we wanted to but uh uh Grady he's had that role the last two years uh and it's been beneficial uh for us uh and so I'm just uh you know grateful that he he responded cuz we had an opportunity in the first game and we didn't we didn't convert so uh really it was it was the call that was on the sheet and you we in that field Zone and it was time to go with it the Malachi made play yeah but on the final drive that's right that's right and and and I think uh he got a little bit overshadow last year because of of of Malik's production but he still was was one of the better uh guys in the ACC and the challenges off season was for him to go be you know make his stake at the at the best you know in the league and and he's played uh unbelievable over the last two weeks and made some some huge huge plays um and career high for him I think he had 11 for 148 those are career high for him and and again you know that's just just guys giving everything that they have for the team so super super proud of uh of Malik weas that's right it it just balances out the field and and you know with the with the emergence of of of Trail and then you got Malachi and and Tyree is going to get going right like we can't forget about Tyreek he's going to get going and now you have a tight end so then when you when you go out in 10 Personnel sets if they want to roll coverage over the top of of Malachi they're going to be short on one of those three uh the area we got to improve is is we got to be more effective running the football uh I think that was you know and I know Dez tried to get to the run but uh it's hard when when you're handing it off and and you're not getting quite the push that you need and you know you're losing a yard or you're gaining one you can't stay on schedule and then when we did you know have effective runs man we'd offset it with a self-imposed uh penalty so I think the addition of the tight end those receivers on the outside and then when we fully you know get the Run game established I think it it creates stress on on defenses and you know super proud of of of Jack Whitmer you know let's talk about Jack Whitmer was a guy that that that came to UVA as a tight end and now he started two games uh in the uh in the ACC at left tackle and we're not talking about him right that means he's done his job so man super proud of of Jack filling in for Mel boy and hopefully boy will be back here uh here pretty soon hoping you know he'll be uh ready to go this week but but just shout out to Jack because that's that came in huge uh especially versus that defensive front um and then you know also want to want to want to want to give some love to the guys up front man they they've been challenged and they came up with six sacks uh which is something that we we we didn't do last year getting to the quarterback hopefully this will continue to build our confidence cuz we're going to need those guys uh putting pressure on the opposing quarterbacks for us to be successful uh defensively how much seen what did you see from yeah so with AC like he he showed up with that like I'm not going to try and take credit uh saying that we that we that we pushed a button he he just he he showed up with that tenacity and that toughness and that grit and the competitiveness you you know where where the growth is is being able to you know Channel it and transition a little bit quicker right not not getting caught up so much in in that aspect of being but being able to lock in play after play uh he was a 77% completion you know uh percentage you know that's back toback weeks where he's had very high completion percentages um and then he responded you know two interceptions uh there uh in the game but that did he don't blink I mean he didn't blink he just but I can't say that that's anything we've done coaching wise that's as AC thir little yeah um and I think the mentality uh was there coming out a half like the guys were very engaged uh but but sometimes uh you know things don't manifest the way that you want right like you want every you want every possession you want every Drive uh to end in end in a score uh but that's you know probably unrealistic and so the key is how do you respond and so the guys man there was there was there was energy on the sideline a lot of encouragement guys weren't you know turning on each other they weren't they weren't they weren't fussing at each other they were they were they were emphatically encouraging encouraging each other that hey we're going to go make a play we're going to get it to the fourth and we're going to find a way to win the game you got got to do whatever you possibly can and disrup rupt the mesh and again you know hats off to to coach Clawson and that system because they've created their own niche in college football they're really really good at it I mean it's it's it's the darnest thing you know that quarterback is inching inch and inching closer to the line and you still can't get to them right but uh man they they they play hard they're very well coached uh but we had to do whatever we possibly could because the key is just to be able to create uh some knockback and again you know pressures are are more so designed to create some one-on ones you know and if you can make maybe pull them off the double teams a little bit quicker right then you can create some edges and when you create some edges then you can maybe create some penetration yourens oh man great great question you know I was I was more so trying to figure out okay if they get it like I was I heard the call and then I flipped over I'm talking you know offensively like what what do we need to do we get the ball back uh there um but I told I told rud man go be aggressive man let's let's put the kids in position and then let's go let's go see can we can we win and then I'll you know I can follow up uh later once we review that review that call but I was more I was thinking more game management like in that situation like okay what do we do you know now you know uh if if anything doesn't go our way on that play
