UTEP on Saturday excited to see what Dylan riola can do excited to see with the black shirts how they look how Matt rule Squad looks in year to now if you're watching via the TU of view YouTube it looks a little different behind me all right got the set from the Chronicles behind me as well all right now I don't know what the deal with this cord is we're going to have to work on that in the future but you know don't don't pay that no never mind if you're not watching on the tube of you well you don't have to worry about the core this next me but that's okay ladies and gentlemen we got a loaded show as always gonna preview you tip gonna you gonna talk about Nebraska's depth chart because I haven't had the opportunity to do that just yet I'll give some brief brief thoughts there wasn't a whole lot of shockers there's really only kind of one position that sticks out to me a little bit because there was really not a starter named it was or or or or or situation so we'll talk about that preview UTEP talk about Nebraska's depth chart okay also all right week one of college football is loaded with games just absolutely loaded with games this weekend now Miami and Florida okay I know people aren't expecting a whole lot out of Florida and my Lord I've talked about it on the show before do they play a barut schedule that that sucks for I I don't feel sorry for him at all because I don't care about Florida but I am interested in Miami at Florida and actually if you look at the recruiting ranking composite like the composite rankings over the years Florida has the 13th most talented roster in America they're not you know they haven't played like it in recent years Miami actually has the 14th most talented roster in America so when you just think about Talent which doesn't exactly tell you how good you are but it tells you what you're capable of Miami is right there or Florida is right there with Miami and it's at Florida so that's actually a very intriguing game okay I'd say probably two of the top 15 most prestigious college football programs of all time and that's only the fifth best game this weekend you look at USC number 23 by the way Miami's number 19 Florida's unranked number 23 USC versus number 13 LSU this is an incredibly intriguing game now a big 10 SEC matchup but USC can score LSU could score last year they lose the Heisman Trophy winner are they going to play some defense is either one of these teams these were the two most electric offenses in America complemented by two of the worst defenses in all of power five four football last year was power five conferences now it's four really it's two let's be honest there's two power conferences there's kind of two in the middle and then there's the five uh group of five conferences that's really what it is but this is an intriguing matchup because which one of these teams is going to take a step forward how are they going to look on defense can they continue to roll on offense two ranked teams Big 10 SEC matchup that's actually Sunday by the way the Miami Florida match up is 3:30 on Saturday Sunday 7:30 pm central time it's USC versus LSU two ranked teams playing number 23 and number 13 all right before I get into the top three games of the weekend I do want to give a shout out to bonso Pool and Spa we have a pool in our backyard ladies and gentlemen it was pretty cool to watch them actually fill the pool with water we're actually out there watching once it was full one of the workers looks at us and they go you you can hop in you can hop in now they're still pouring cement on one part I was like I I don't know I don't know if I want my kids walking around what cement so while the pool may be good to go some of the cement ain't ready but the kids are excited probably this weekend celebrating a Nebraska Victory is what I anticipate the character kids are going to hop in that pool so check them out of bonso pool.com they've also got phenomenal hot tubs as well all right ladies and gentlemen number three and it's interesting because West Virginia actually played Penn State really tough for about two and a half quarters last year and then Penn State kind of pulled away a little bit but Penn State versus West Virginia number eight Penn State and this is this is intriguing to me because Penn State they're ranked number eight in the country which is about where they normally finish after they beat everybody but lose to Michigan Ohio State so that's kind of where they're slotted again they're going to be really good on defense I don't know if they're going to be as good as last year last year the top three defenses in America however you wanted to rank them based on stats based on the ey test which is just a fancy way of saying your opinion but it was Michigan Ohio State Penn State those were the top three okay I don't Michigan Ohio State are still going to be really good Ohio state looks like a borderline NFL team on defense over there the All-American preseason All-American teams came out like two or three weeks ago two of the four okay preseason all-americans in the secondary for across the entire country where Caleb Downs of the corner two from Ohio State all right so a corner and a safety were two of the four first team preseason all-americans that came out a few weeks ago now Penn State the question is Drew Aller he's like check down King okay I played with an individual in DC I'll keep his name out of because he was a good guy relatively good guy so to speak pretty good football player but he played quarterback only had a couple of starts due to some injuries mostly to Donovan McNab if I remember right the first year I was there and he was the check down King in fact Roy hulo owns the record for most receptions in a Washington commanders football game with 14 from the running back spot because this particular quarterback just kept doing check down check down check down and admittedly Roy kept catching the ball making some plays but Drew allers is kind of that same checkdown mentality type player now in his defense there was no separation from his wide receivers last year there was none so this year all right they bring in Julian Fleming I've talked about him in the past from Ohio State this is his chance to break out number one wide receiver in America when he came out of high school a few years ago can he finally break out he kind of got buried on the depth chart there in a very talented Ohio State Room transfers over to the NY Lions can he have a breakout season could Drew Aller have a breakout season can they execute the forward pass just a little to a lot better all right they got two talented running backs nobody's questioning their run game Aller was Mr Football in the state of Ohio coming out of high school school so this guy was highly recruited You Got Talent on the edges now you got two talented running backs what can their offense do okay can their offense complement that defense because their pass game complement the Run game so that's why I have Penn State ahead of West Virginia because they've been pointing to this recruiting class up there in Happy Valley for three years for three years they've been saying pointing to this year 2024 when these kids are Juniors that's the two running backs that's Aller that's all these guys that they're going to be pretty good well this is that year so I'm curious to see about Penn State all right number two Notre Dame and Texas A&M Notre Dame actually number seven of the country preseason Texas A&M number 20 they're actually an underdog in this game about a two and a half Point Underdog why would the number seven team of the country be a dog to the number 20 team in the country yeah it's on the road it's going to be a tough atmosphere first game of the year you never know what the heck you're G to get Mike Elco the former Duke Coach in his first year replacing Jimbo fiser there at agyan for Texas s our good buddies from the south haha he doesn't walk in to a place where the cupboard is bare there are four and five-star players running around that locker room it was not lack of talent it was it was lack of Direction leadership Etc which is crazy to say because Jimbo Fisher won a national championship of Florida state which is a large part of the reason he got such you know the hund million do 10year deal at A&M which obviously didn't work out but Mike Elco walks into a situation we're just the I've looked at the talent composite rankings by the way Clemson top five in the country if you didn't know the top three teams I'm going to shock you with this okay you're gonna be floored it's actually Alabama one they've lost a lot of talent there's a lot of starters at other schools right now they were at at Alabama a year ago and when Nick Sabin retired a lot of them left they still according to most recruiting ranking composits have the most talented roster in America what they don't have is a lot of experience it's Youth and it's Young number one was Alabama number two was Georgia number three was Ohio state I know you're shocked other than Alabama maybe being at number one all right number five was Clemson just an FYI like I said Florida was 13 Miami was 14 Texas A&M was number eight number they were top 10 number eight most talented roster in America this is a team that doesn't lack Talent speed athleticism ability they need a direction I know the seword I'm gonna drop it culture they need someone to come in and bring them together right out the gate Elco and Duke had great success it was for for for Duke standards okay Duke football not not basketball but right out the gate and last year they actually spank Clemson beat him by two or three touchdowns a year ago so he he he walks into a situation that's pretty darn good and he's shown he can turn things around quickly Notre Dame Texas A&M you know I'll give my predictions for these games later on in the show I wasn't supposed to go spend this much time on these right out the gate but I guess I am I want to get to the Nebraska UT stuff but I love college football in general so& M talented probably more talented than Notre Dame or they're a better football team we'll find out they have not been as of the past few years which is why they have a new coach I will give my predictions for these games at the end of this show number one I mean it's got to be obvious Clemson Georgia all right again Georgia number two most talented team in the country Clemson number five which I think surprises a lot of people it surprised me they've had Talent the quarterback has not played as well I mean when we got guys like DeShaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence generational type players the quarterback play might dip every once in a while but he was questionable at best especially on the road last year all right and the wide receivers have struggled mightily for Clemson which probably leads to the quarterback struggling a little bit Clemson had Elite receivers when they were getting to the cfp playoff every year and they were playing against bam and the national title game seemingly every freaking year their receivers have been very mundane the past two or three years they've got talent at the wide receiver spot they're young they're unproven they're freshman they're sophomores all right Georgia number 14 Clemson versus number one Georgia obviously Georgia Uber talented number one you know team of the country probably the top program in the country overall right now this is a kind of a can Clemson keep this close and you never know what might happen type situation at the end of the game is exactly what this is or does Georgia just come in and steamroll him and now dabos Sweeney going to catch all sorts of heat including why don't you bring in transfer portal players because well that's a whole topic for a whole another show to be honest with you but that is my top game to watch and it Ki this weekend and it kicks off at noon on Saturday I love these noon kickoffs with big- Time games now okay so I'm gonna come back to these games at the end of the show and give my prediction but let's let's get into the the actual top game of the week UTEP versus Nebraska now if you don't know much about UTEP they struggled a year ago three and nine lost a lot of players lost 75% of their roster one of their one of their main returning players is is their kicker maybe he could help us but we'll see how that that progresses on Nebraska side of things but they have a new head coach came in from Austin P the FCS school Austin P okay D Walden is his name he's got a lot of energy had a lot of success at FCS the a specifically with Austin P okay there's been a roster overhaul including Walden bringing in nearly a dozen transfers from a an Austin P team in a faster style he wants to have an upo offense he wants to go quick he wants to go fast a faster style of play that just didn't work with the players that he inherited so he had to bring in a lot of the transfer guys again guys he had at Austin P it could be a bit messy to be honest with you if you're a UTEP at first first and one the first article I saw on UTEP when I started doing research for this game wasn't specifically about UTEP I was just casually scrolling through college football stuff because that's what I do and it's the top 15 worst teams in America and I was like Wow nobody ever talks about the 15 worst teams and here lies utap according to this article not a lot of high expectations there but I I will say it could be messy for them at first I hope it's incredibly messy on Saturday for them that's what I hope for but I do think their future can be relatively bright because he's a good coach and may just take some time okay Nebraska comes into this obviously year two under Matt rule the biggest question mark true freshman quarterback but they have the advantage in every other area obviously should have more Talent should be bigger have the home field advantage you're two under Matt rule versus the team that really struggled last year lost a lot of players a to talk more about Nebraska more about UTEP and then I'll get my prediction for Nebraska UTEP the final score also my prediction for the top games of the weekend in college football week one I do want to give a shout out to two other games tonight our Good Buddies the little Bros from Colorado are going to play North Dakota State I mean you want to talk about two programs that could not possibly be any more different North Dakota state is blue collar in your face Smashmouth physical football going to bloody bloody bloody then you're going to play Colorado who has like 4,000 players leave and 4,000 players come in and it's all about clicks and clickbait and they they bring in a new whole offensive line they got a whole new front seven basically on defense because their trenches were not very good last year they have ridiculous speed everywhere which is kind of the opposite of North Dakota State they have athletes no disrespect uh but to me it's like a culture different a difference of approach obviously Colorado's going to have they got the HomeField Advantage but they've going to have a little bit of the talent Advantage as well but I H man North Dakota State they've won like four or five national championships recently for a reason at the FCS level they're predicted to be number two okay in the FCS this year I can't wait to watch that game tonight I just want to see what happens Colorado is a nine and a half Point favorite I got Colorado winning by about 10 I'm curious to see how they they handle the physical style of North Dakota State all right and then another shout out South Dakota state by the way won the national championship last year at the FCS level preseason number one again they're playing number 17 Oklahoma State I actually think Oklahoma state will be South Dakota state by more than Colorado will be in North Dakota State but I'm just curious to see what these FCS schools can do unlike some college football folks I actually still like Cinderella can't stand the book but I like Cinderella in sports and I like rooting for the underdog and I just just want to see what happens sometimes Oklahoma State basically has their whole entire offense coming back their whole offensive line the number one running back in the entire country a lot of people have them in the Big 12 championship game potentially winning at preseason number 17 which is absurdly high for a big 12 team okay because you know obviously the Big 10 the SEC SEC teams tend to get the nod for obvious reasons okay but I'm curious to watch that as well but let's look at the real game of the week Nebraska versus UTEP all right by the way utap I've been asked this like five times this week it stands for University of Texas El Paso it's in West Texas ladies and gentlemen and if you don't know what UTSA their nickname is the road runners okay another school down there in Texas it's University of Texas San Antonio the road runners by the way you ever been to San Antonio check out the river Riverwalk it's absolutely phenomenal all right so here are some things about this game Nebraska utap all right Dylan Rola is obviously expected to start a quarterback against UTEP if he does start which he's going to against the miners he would join Adrien Martinez 2018 as the only true freshman quarterback to start a season opener in school history now are there true freshman who've started okay Tommy Frasier did it I think sixth Game of the Year back in 1992 we had another quarterback do it in 2009 as well now Nebraska Returns the majority of its defensive production if you hadn't heard throughout this offseason okay from a unit that rank in the top 15 nationally and Rush defense eighth to be specific Total Defense 11th to be specific and scoring defense 13th in the country all right 15 I'm sorry I apologize 42 offensive tackle Bryce benhard is expected to start at right tackle against UTP the start would be the 42nd start of his career I remember when he committed to Nebraska I think I was in my 20s I'm 40 now I feel like like I was in my 20s no I loved watching him improve a year ago I loved watching him be become like a legit NFL prospect I remember thinking man that dude is tall six foot n and then I heard he won the state wrestling championship up in Minnesota he was a top player coming out of the state of Minnesota it's hard to be successful as a wrestler being that tall I to me that was incredibly impressive I'm glad to see him doing well like I said he's turned himself into a legit NFL prospect all right so this start on Saturday be the 42nd of benh Hart's career and would establish a new record for career starts by a Husker offensive lineman he's currently tied with Nebraska Legend Zack weager now there's some interesting stats about all these games throughout Nebraska's schedule as we look at these all right this is against UTP August 31st the first season opener at home since 2019 it's like a half a decade ago that's crazy why do the people who make the schedules hate us it's also the last time we won our first game of the year if you didn't know that all right Colorado if Nebraska beats our little brothers from Colorado that would be their 50th win against Colorado it's not a rivalry okay if we win I can definitely say that but in our series versus Colorado over the years all right Northern Iowa September 14th that's actually the first alltime meeting between Nebraska and Northern Iowa that'll happen the third game of the year Illinois kind of cool that game that home game will be the four 400th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium dating all the way back to 1962 that is awesome when people tell me oh we've got the greatest fans in this and the greatest fans in that like we have stats and facts that are inarguable that Husker nation is the actual greatest fan base I will say this there are some soccer fans in other countries they are nuts and I respect it I respect the heck out of them just being nuts they love them some soccer I I got I I got nothing but love and respect for that all right at Purdue this will be the fourth meeting in West Lafayette in the past six years make him come to Lincoln more often that'd be great Ruckers This is the only 20 24 FBS game between former NFL coaches when Nebraska plays Ruckers Matt Rule and Greg shano all right Indiana that will be Nebraska's only their second trip to Bloomington since joining the Big 10 at Ohio State two of the last four meetings have actually been decided by nine points or less Nebraska has been close a few times with the Buckeyes all right UCLA Nebraska has been ranked in 10 of their 13 alltime meetings Nebraska versus UCLA the Huskers versus the Bruins all right at USC the only team Nebraska has played more than once and not beaten in their history hopefully that changes this year all right Wisconsin the last three matchups have all been decided between Nebraska Wisconsin by seven points or less just let's just get one ball to bounce our way when we play the badges all right at Iowa the Huskers 35th straight Black Friday game will be this year when they play against Iowa real quick all right so this has been a this has been a crazy week in the carer house for for a plethora of reasons uh my parents who my dad was was born in Hastings raised on a small family farm in in Brule when I was three years old he his job took me up state of Washington so that's where I grew up and that's why I grew up in the Northwest and that's where my parents still live they're in town for their once a year visit and so with everything that's going on my parents being in town this has just been an absolutely boners week to be honest with you but it's been a lot of fun and I always look forward to seeing family especially my my parents so I want to say hi to my mom and dad Dave and Nancy all right my mom is going to smile at that my dad's going to be mortified but that's okay so when you think about UTP you think about Nebraska my keys to the game are this we have the the advantage in every area UTEP is supposed to be one of the worst 15 teams in the country I talked about that earlier a lot of people think Nebraska can finish ranked I'm of the mindset if they go eight and four and you're a big 10 team you have an really good opportunity to finish ranked and I predicted Nebraska to go eight and four so what are the keys to this game I got three right out the gate take care of the ball let's take care of the ball let's be disciplined I should actually just say just be disciplined all right win the the turnover battle win the penalty battle take care of the ball and that that goes without saying and I know that's something they've emphasized during Camp number two get Dylan riola into a rhythm just get him into a rhythm he if you saw him before the spring game that was his lifelong dream coming true playing in a game at Nebraska it was a practice but I get it and so he's going to be highly emotional highly excited which is awesome but you need to calm the teenage true freshman starting quarterback down making his first start ever here for the big red in front of husker nation and Memorial Stadium 90 plus thousand people just calm them down by just getting them in a rhythm all right I do like the idea the first couple plays being run plays establish the run and that kind of sets up the play action and you can complete some short passes obviously L he's got big time armed talent and if you want to take a deep shot early I'm always a fan of that because then it scares the crap out of the defense on the other side but I would say getting him in a rhythm getting him calmed down early and then usually about the end of that first quarter you get in the flow of the game and all the butterflies and all the excitement which are phenomenal things because it means it matters to you if you don't have those things go do something else but they usually kind of subside and you get into the flow of the game all right number three it's interesting because I'm not I'm not going to address the defense in all this I have confidence in the defense you know I I'll give a bonus after this because I I I want to show the defense some love but it's to me it's special teams how much improved is our return game nobody's talked about our return game and how bad it was last year because we have a lot of talented guys and we saw some of the big returns in the spring game but we need to carry that over into an actual game I want to see it in an actual game our kicking game is a question mark how are we going to handle field goals can we make know 30 to 40 yard field goals we don't need the 50 60 yard bomb can we make the 20 to 30 to 40 yard field goal okay can we be consistent to me it's special teams if I was to add a bonus though all right UTEP they got a lot of new but they are going to try to go fast the bonus is the black shirts need to be ready to play with and against speed and adjust quickly on the Fly I have full confidence they're going to do it which is why they didn't make it's why they didn't make my top three um most important keys for the game but I want to show them some love so that's my bonus number one be disciplined taking care of the ball be smart with penalties things of that nature number two get Dylan riola into a rhythm early get him in the flow get him calmed down and get him rolling early number three special teams just make the basic field goals you know it'd be nice to see at least a 10 yard average potentially more but at least a 10 yard average every time we return the ball punt return kick return and the like and defensively be ready to play Fast be ready to play against speed and be ready to adjust on the Fly and I have full confidence that they will all right ladies and gentlemen don't go anywhere I'm GNA give my official prediction for the actual game of the week which is I'm really going to go to the one spot that I'm watching the most that I'm the most curious about well I'll come back to that because there's another spot I want to keep an eye on it's a defensive back R all right Tommy Hill Maris Beford name the two starters all right zier Wright has 15 starts under his belt at USC USC doesn't play defense so what does that mean I don't know but what can he do down the road Hill who was a starter at the end of spring got hurt when can he get back into this mix Tommy Hill and Maris Buford are the starters right now but I'm curious to see what zier and blly can do and all also mares as this season goes along let's go to the running back room because I look at the depth chart it says running back ramir Johnson or EMT Johnson or Gabe Irvin Jr or Dante da like we couldn't really we couldn't limit it to three or two it just just all four I mean this this isn't running back by kittee this is running back by posi here's the deal they're all talented that's why it's hard to narrow it down I know I kid I kid it's hard Ramirez got great speed EMT Johnson's kind of all around got that great balance so to speak Gabe Irvin's big strong physical whis speed can he stay healthy Dante dowell's that big Power Big 10 running back who transfer from Oregon I'm waiting to see who's going to take the ball by the horns you've eventually got to narrow this down you don't have to do a game one versus UT okay but you've eventually got to narrow this down to at least three backs maybe two I am hoping to see ramir potentially return some kicks that would be fun to watch okay so that was the one thing that stood out to me from those are the two things that stood out to me from the depth chart I'm gonna be keeping my eye on that running back spot you look at the first four games of the year for Nebraska all home games utap Colorado Northern Iowa Illinois I'm just going to throw this out there and I think Colorado is actually going to be better than people think I know send me hate mail don't I won't read it but you can send it anyways uh what's the tickets address somebody text it to me they can send it to the ticket all right but if we I do think they're going to be better than most people think but we're going to learn a lot about them tonight against North Dakota State but if Nebraska can beat Colorado it is a very very very real possibility they could start the season 40 that that that's very very real possibility all right now let's get to my prediction for Nebraska versus UTP as I mentioned earlier in the show okay utep's a massive Underdog 27 and a half Point Underdog all right and a total of 49 points has been set for this game now Nebraska last year if you didn't know averaged 18 points per game which was 123rd in college football and gave up 18.25 points per game all right that's how close it was last year all those games all right and that defense again scoring defense ranked 13th in the country all right a year ago the miners failed to qualify for a bowl game not even close to making a bowl game at three- n as we know Nebraska finished 5- seven okay their offense average 19.9 points per game again their offense is going to look a lot different this this year it's going to take them some time to get into the flow but he did bring some players from his previous School the new head coach so they will have some familiarity with it but it's their first time playing at an FBS level let alone a big 10 level okay now that 19.9 points per game was 119th in college football for UTEP a year ago they gave up average of 28.5 points per game which was 88th in the entire country on a defense all right I have Nebraska winning 38-10 that is my official prediction which means they cover they win by 28 the spreads 27 and a half so they cover now part of me is like man is UTEP gonna score 10 points I don't know it's the first game of the year who knows what the hell's going to happen I mean Ju Just Ask Florida State all this talk oh we should have been in the playoff lose a th000 to zero to Georgia it was actually 63 to3 oh we're going to be in the playoff this year let's boo KK herb Street then let's go lose to Georgia Tech like top 10 team in the country like at some point you got to kick the ball off and then all hell breaks loose and that's why I love college football okay so UTEP may not score 10 points I am really hoping Nebraska can get into the 40-point range again this is not a good UTEP team not anticipated to be we haven't seen him actually out on the field yet but I'm going to go 38 to 10 for now till I see a little bit more all right let's run down we got about two minutes left in the show my predictions for the top games this weekend all right I'm just going to start at number seven actually South Dakota State Oklahoma State I think South Dakota state is going to keep it close for a h for a half Oklahoma State pulls away in the fourth quarter North Dakota State Colorado I think this is a blue collar iny face Smashmouth game and then Colorado pulls away late Miami of Florida Miami is actually the underdog even though they're ranked this was the toughest game for me to predict honestly because Florida's actually the talent composite is actually in their advantage they've actually got the home field advantage they just have a brutal schedule like a lot of people are like if they go nine to three they should be in the playoff ah if they go six and six with this schedule they should be in the playoff if you've looked at some of the teams that they play in a row okay I am going to go with Miami winning this game because I predicted them to go 11 and one and I can't afford them to lose the first game of the year and them expect them to end up 11 to1 USC LSU to me I see two very evenly matched teams I just see a little bit more proven this at this point having played zero games so far this year in LSU I'm going with LSU number eight Penn State West Virginia look for West Virginia to come out on fire the stadium to be rocking they're going to want to take down their big brother in Penn State and look for Penn State to ultimately pull away in the second half I got Penn State Notre Dame Texas A&M this was the second hardest game for me to predict A&M is a two and a half Point favorite number 20 is a two and a half Point favorite over the number seven team in the country and I'm rolling with number 20 I'm going with A&M in one of the most exciting games of the weekend Clemson and Georgia I think Clemson Clemson comes out with something to prove they are a 14-point underdog remember dbos Sweeney is two- one versus Nick Sabin in National Championship Games nobody else on planet Earth can say that that was also feels like decades ago I'm going with Georgia and I think I think Georgia actually wins I don't think they cover I think seven to 10 they win by seven to 10 points all right ladies and gentlemen have a glorious day have a
