today I wanted to talk a little bit about the courthouse situation between Edmonton and Calgary Edmonton experienced a power outage last week which shut down King's bench which is the higher Court and led to those matters being shifted over to the Provincial Court where it's already busy where there's not enough room um this has been an ongoing issue uh Calgary on the other hand has a state-of-the-art courthouse which was built uh in the early 2000s there's been calls by associate Chief Judges to adjust Edmonton to rebuild the courthouse to account for the volume that exists in Edmonton Edmonton being a city of one million people and I mean it gives us ludicrous is having buckets catch water from the windows that are on above on the ceiling and this call has not only been made in 2010 but it was made in 2013 By the same associate chief judge I think it's high time that Edmonton uh redo its Courthouse rebuild similar things are happening in Toronto as they consolidate their many Regional courthouses which are in disrepair in favor of a central building brand new meant to accommodate the numbers so what I would suggest in this post is that Edmonton is the capital city it's a city of a million people and it is in desperate need of a new courthouse we can't have power outages pushing matters what happens is people lose their right to a trial in a timely fashion they lose their right to resolving their matters any and they lose their result their ability to actually attend in court it creates essentially a mess and this needs to be corrected immediately uh Edmonton uh is in need of a courthouse and should be given a courthouse immediately that's all I have to say today is Dan Murphy a criminal lawyer based out of Edmonton and uh that's uh the gist of it all right thank you goodbye
